PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Everything is changing; our planet is changing, the climate is changing, we, ourselves are changing. When I was a teenager, I never thought that I would become a vegan, or develop the compassion that I currently have for animals. I never anticipated that I would be riding a bicycle over 100 miles each week, and that I would be enjoying it so much! All of these gifts came into my life when I was ready for change and open to receive. In Poland, there is a common greeting. When one is asked “What’s new with you?” The response is, “Everything is the same; I’m so glad that it’s not worse.” I am stirred when people say this because, in my life, everything is constantly changing. While at times I wish that I could just stop and do nothing, I’m glad that my life has been evolving. I’ve made a 180° change since moving to the United States 13 years ago, and that is because I welcomed all of the experiences that came my way. What happens when change comes apparently from nowhere? For me, what is most important is to stay grounded, and have the faith that everything is taken care of. I consciously and intentionally remind myself that I am ready for change. I cultivate the faith that the universe will provide, and that all I need will come to me; for as the song says, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” Changes are messages from the universe. If you believe this, and I do, then you know that they are gifts that light the way to our highest and truest self. How to Stay Grounded and Deal with Such Changes: Here are some practices to follow to keep yourself grounded, and to handle change in the healthiest and most effective way possible: Exercise by walking barefoot in nature, by going to the gym and lifting weights, or practicing yoga and meditation. Take time to feel your body, and feed it healthy foods like fruits, legumes, and root vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, and rice. Drink plenty of water, and go to bed no later than 10:00 p.m. My belief is that we are spiritual beings having human experiences, which we chose and agreed to before we were born. One of the ways to accept change is to have faith. This means trusting that all was taken care of prior to our birth. It is our privilege to enjoy the ride, even though at times it can be bumpy. Also, I like to think that all changes are catalysts on an extraordinary journey that leads us to the ultimate realization that we are infinite, and created in pure love.

6 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

We are energy beings, and at times in our lives, what we have, and who we are, no longer resonates with us. We are thus called to change; to move forward. Do you ever wonder what life would be like if you worked less, and had more recreation time? At times I’ve dreamt of only working 9 to 5; of having a life in which I did not have to worry about work 24-7. Then I realize that while I might be more comfortable, I would not be truly happy. I love what I do! I embrace change, and I trust that it is coming my way for the highest good. Every day I know that change feeds my soul. While I don’t always expect it, or welcome it with open arms, in the end I know that each change is a milestone on my journey, and every shift transforms me into the person I am becoming, and I am deeply grateful for this. The Best,

Kasia Szumal

The Chicago Artisan Chocolate Festival

April 16th & 17th Stephen M. Bailey Auditorium at Plumber’s Hall, Chicago ALL ABOUT TOWN

By: Theresa Puskar

“outer” 54-year old was suffering with pangs of sugar-guilt. As I reflected back on my life, I pondered, “When did the joyful, unencumbered child disappear, and the guilt-ridden ‘adult’ take over?”

Chocolate truffles from MELT Chocolates – New Berlin, WI

“There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate.” Linda Grayson

Frankly, I’d like to know who was responsible for coining the phrase, “Death by chocolate?” I guess if I were going to die, death by chocolate would be the way to go! Did you catch that, “If I were going to die?” Let’s be honest and change that phrase; “When I die.” Isn’t it funny how, even though we know we are going to die, somewhere in our psyche we believe we’re immortal? Perhaps chocolate is the secret to immortality. Wouldn’t that be wonderful! “Don’t wreck a sublime chocolate experience by feeling guilty. Chocolate isn’t like premarital sex. It will not make you pregnant. And it always feels good.” Lora Brody

What better way to venture out into the world than to attend The Chicago Artisan Chocolate Festival, with my dear friend and partner in spiritual awakening, Kristin Panek? Kristin is the founder of the Flowering Heart Center in Downers Grove. I know I most definitely felt my heart flower, as I perused the festival floors and tasted the delectable chocolates at this delicious event. For the past three months, I placed myself in self-inflicted hibernation, with a commitment to slow down. I believe my experiment was successful; as I continue to honor more peace, and broaden my hours of free time. Along with slowing down, I also feel a calling to not only “stop,” but to also take the time to have some fun and smell life’s roses. In this case, my first “fun” venture out was to the wine and chocolate show.

Kristin Panek and Theresa Puskar at Tiddleywink Toffee booth Our first stop was at the Tiddleywink Toffee booth. Based in Munster, Indiana, Tiddleywink offered English toffee that they rightfully call the “Thin English Delight.” As my joyful inner child relished in fully embracing and experiencing this chocolate, nut, and toffee delight as it melted in my mouth, my struggling

10 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

The team from Crave Commander When we visited the second booth I was transported to another world. A company by the name of Crave Commander, based in Alexandria, IN, made chocolate raspberry truffles that were a taste of heaven on earth. Come to think of it, with all of the guilty feelings that over-ride my logic, I seem to forget that raspberries and chocolate were both created by my divine. They are gifts. Actually, believing in the power of the mind, I wonder how much my feelings about chocolate affect my blood sugar and overall health. I ask myself, “If I were to joyfully and freely eat chocolate without any guilt, giving up any beliefs that it is not good for me, might it have a completely different chemical effect on my body?” I have no doubt that it would. The trick is to change our minds, but the million-dollar question remains, “How do we avoid buying into mass consciousness?” It has a great deal of power. It is difficult when the messaging in the media, among friends, and in the general stream of consciousness is that sweet things are not good for human consumption. I know that some have shifted beyond mass consciousness. Ultimately, I guess I need to start with faith, by believing that I have the power to follow my own belief system, and choose not to buy into the negative trappings of mass consciousness.

“Chocolate is the first luxury. It has so many things wrapped up in it: deliciousness in the moment, childhood memories, and that grin-inducing feeling of getting a reward for being good.” Mariska Hargitay When you think of chocolate, what comes to mind? My strongest “chocolate” childhood memory is based on times spent with my friend, Angela. We were not allowed a great deal of sweets in my home; the odd treat, as fresh fruit was always encouraged over what mom called “Junk food.” However, Angela’s father worked on trains, and used to clean out massive vats of chocolate. He brought home massive rocks of chocolate. Whenever I visited her, I’d indulge in small pieces. However, she and her brother, Dean, would devour 8x8-inch blocks of chocolate. What I found distressing was that despite their diets, they both had immaculate skin, and were generally in great health. In the same vein, I noted that my friends who were allowed all of the baked goods or sweets that they wanted, were very often uninterested. I, on the other hand, couldn’t get enough of them. Another example; I’d be visiting my boyfriend whose mother was an awesome baker. She always had German pastries out on the kitchen counter. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them, while my sweetheart barely noticed they were there. I guess this brings to mind that famous saying, “What you resist, persists.” My love for chocolate and other sugary treats has not faded. Perhaps if it were not considered so taboo when I was young, it would not be such an issue now. I was once told by a remarkable channel that I had to take care with sugar; that I struggled with it. I asked her, “Why is sugar so difficult for me to give up, if it is not good for me?” Her response shook me to my core. “You struggle with sugar because you don’t believe in your own sweetness.” The truth of that statement permeated every sugary cell of my being. I knew it was true, and felt so saddened by my own self-contempt. Despite this awareness, I still fight strong cravings for sweets, as I do my own negative judgments towards myself.

“The 12-step chocolate program: NEVER BE MORE THAN 12 STEPS AWAY FROM CHOCOLATE.” Terry Moore I’m sure that the next booth that featured delicious desserts that won over my heart via my taste buds was no more than 12 steps away! My daughter loves French macarons, so I Alliance Patisserie staff members dropped by the Chicagobased Alliance Patisserie display to purchase some delectable treats for her. Made with creamy ganache or confit fillings, these French pastries range in flavors from lavender to mango, and everything in between. For many years, Chef Peter Rios and his team have won many accolades and awards for their pastries, and have been featured on the Food Network, and the Cooking channel. I could taste, smell, and see why! “Look, there’s no metaphysics on earth like chocolates.” Fernando Pessoa Last but certainly not least, my final visit for the afternoon was to the Milwaukee-based MELT Chocolates exhibit. The truffles they displayed (photo at the top of this article) were really stunning. Each individual piece had been handairbrushed. Created by chocolatier and co-owner, Bjorn, they were magnificent works of art. The flavors were exquisite, and ranged from chocolate orange cream to blueberry, raspberry, and hazelnut cream. I have to say that experiencing the rainbow of colors, shapes, and flavors that were offered was, in fact, a delicious metaphysical experience for me. “When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.” Regina Brett I am glad that I attended the Chicago Artisan Chocolate Festival. It was a wonderful welcome back into event reporting. There was wine available for tasting as well, but I was driving, and frankly, the chocolate was plenty to fuel my satiated soul back to the western suburbs. As I end this review, I have come to another self-supportive commitment. I will continue to seek out activities and experiences that encourage the expression of my joyful child-self. If I choose to eat chocolate and other delightful sweets, then I will do it with a pinch of gratitude, and spoonful of reverence, and most definitely, a cup or two of adulation!

Theresa with Loree Sandler, of LTEC Another memory that wells up within me are the magical birthday parties that my parents hosted for me. I had the best parties. Despite having four daughters, and not a huge income, my parents always managed to create awe-inspiring themed parties for my sisters and I. That takes me to another booth that I enjoyed. Based in Glencoe, IL, the business is titled, Let Them Eat Candles, and the founder, Loree Sandler, had several beautiful packages of edible chocolate candles for sale. What a novel, creative, and fun idea!

As I sit back satiated and fixated, I share one final quote with you: : “If there’s no chocolate in Heaven, I’m not going.” Jane Seabrook, Furry Logic Laugh at Life. Theresa Puskar, our All About Town contributor, is a writer, trainer, speaker, and inspirational audiobook producer. She has recently authored The Terri Series – seven books that focus on bullying, honoring diversity, celebrating creativity, non-judgment of emotions, finding alternatives to technology-based entertainment, discovering a nonjudgmental God, and overcoming fears. PASSION AND

PRAYER FROM THE HEART

The powerful movie Dangerous Beauty recounts the story of Veronica Frankl, a 16th century Venetian courtesan (prostitute for noblemen) who wins the hearts of her clients. Veronica is beautiful, witty, and full of passion for life and her profession. Her clients feel her terrific life force, and they are lifted from the grayness of their lives. The Great Inquisition overtakes Venice, and Veronica is brought to trial on charges of witchcraft. The judge sternly tells her that if she confesses to being a witch, her life will be spared. In a stirring courtroom soliloquy, Veronica declares, “I confess. . .I confess that I find more ecstasy in passion than in prayer. Such passion is prayer.” For those of us who have been taught that prayer or spirituality requires denying our passion, Veronica’s statement may come as a shock. But, as Phillip Brooks noted, “Prayer is not the overcoming of God’s reluctance, but the taking hold of God’s willingness.” And what is God’s willingness, but the experience of joy and abundance in every area of life?

By: Alan Cohen

Another time I sat through a fairly boring church Christmas service. As soon as the service was over and people were milling out, some upbeat music came over the loudspeaker. I looked up into the balcony and saw two teenagers who came alive and started dancing to this music. Suddenly my heart lifted. It was the first shred of aliveness I felt during the service. I think Jesus would have appreciated it, too. Then there was the time I spoke at a small church in the Midwest. That day the Sunday school teacher didn’t show up, so the church elders took the class, which consisted of a half-dozen boys about the age of 10, and stuck them in the first row of the church, hoping this would keep the kids in line. My talk was on making the most of wherever you are. You can imagine my surprise when I looked over to see all of these boys sitting there with quarters in their eye sockets! At first I was jarred, then I had to hand it to them. They were the only people in the church who put my lesson into practice immediately!

While giving a talk at a church in a conservative area of the country, I noticed that nearly everyone in the church looked the same. The women had the same hairdos, the men wore the same suits, and most of the conversations fell within the middle of the bell curve of what is socially acceptable. If you saw the movie Pleasantville, you get the picture. Congenial but not exciting.

A fun way to evaluate your activities is by doing “energy scans’ on yourself and others in any given situation. Have you ever seen a magazine or television advertisement for home insulation, where they show a thermograph of a home in the wintertime? The photo shows most of the home as blue, indicating the area that is well-insulated. Some of the areas, especially around doors and windows, are glowing red, indicating the places where heat is leaking out.

Then a teenage fellow with orange hair walked into the church. Now I confess that I have had judgments about people who dye their hair weird colors and have metal objects inserted in various bodily orifices. But that day I was really glad to see that guy. He was the only person in that church, as far as I could tell, who was making a statement for individual expression.

Over a long period of time we have been trained to believe that life is about staying insulated, rather than glowing with passion. God, however, is most present and obvious where people are happy and alive. This means that there is more genuine prayer happening at football games than most churches. If churches could work up enthusiasm, presence of attention, and spirit

12 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

as well as professional football, religion in our country would really rock. But many people walk out of most churches more dead than alive. If next Sunday we made a rule that only those people who would really love to go to church go, I wonder what attendance would look like. The good news is that the energy in church would be spectacular. I would rather teach to a small group who really want to be there, than to a large group whose mind was on golf. To that group I would say, “Please, go golf. Let the golf course be your church.” Such passion is prayer. Wherever there is passion, there is church. Wherever there is aliveness, there is God. True prayer is not mumbling a set of words, but energetically expressing what makes you feel most alive. When you love what you are doing, you are God in action. “LOVE,

SERVE, AND REMEMBER” THE SHARED HEART: HEARTFULNESS By: Joyce and Barry Vissell

is how I want the next 20 years of my life to be? Do I want it to be a total concentration on my body, and how it isn’t working the way it used to? Or do I want something more? I want my next 20 years or more to be lived with purpose and joy. I often reflect on the advice given an American teacher, Ram Dass, by his guru. His guru was dying, and Ram Dass wanted advice on how he should live the rest of his life. Ram Dass was a young man at the time. His guru went into deep meditation and, after several hours, he opened his eyes and said simply, “Love everyone, serve everyone, remember God, and tell the truth.” Then he closed his eyes again, and the subject was closed. Such volumes of wisdom in those few words.

Last month, my husband Barry and I both turned 70. For half of our lives, we have been writing these columns once a month; 35 years of writing for magazines, and our own list. We used to mail out the columns to those on our mailing list, and we used to write each column by hand. It also means we can no longer deny that we are truly senior citizens. When we were younger, we used to look at people our age and say to each other that we would never grow older. Even though we are both very active, and committed to never retiring, we are growing older, and our bodies are slowing down a bit. Most significantly, turning 70 is forcing us to look ahead to the future. How do we want to live the next 20 or more years? I am a swimmer, and I try to swim for an hour at least three to four times a week. After my swim at the local club, I sometimes sit in the hot tub for a few minutes to warm up. It is usually crowded, and many people come only for the hot tub, and seem to love to talk to others, even if they do not know them. Most people are my age, and the general topic of conversation is about the ailments of the body. People talk about their operations, their hips, knees, shoulders, their backs, what is hurting them, and how they are trying to overcome the pain. I sit there quietly and wonder if this

14 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

I want to live the next 20 or more years in love. I want to find even more ways to love and honor my wonderful husband. I want to deeply love my children and grandchildren. I want to love and accept myself with all of the changes I will be going through. Rather than being down on myself because I cannot do something I could easily do before, I want to be kind to myself, and love my aging body and mind. I want to be constantly trying to bring love and understanding into every situation, and be gentle with myself when I cannot be the loving person I want to be. I want to develop a more personal relationship with God, and feel how much I love and need that connection. I want to be constantly serving in this life. I never, ever want to stop. I do not want to get to the point where I say to myself, “You have done enough, now you can stop.” My mother and father were such beautiful examples of this to me. My father had heart disease and lost his hearing completely in his late 80s, yet he did not lose the ability to craft things out of wood. Several months after being rushed to the hospital with a heart attack, he was back in his workshop making wooden toys for disadvantaged children. On the day before he died, he and my mother delivered these beautiful wooden toys to a very poor preschool that hardly had any toys. The children were so happy. My dad got down on the floor and played with the children and the toys. He felt so happy to be bringing magic and joy to their faces, and to give something of himself to them. My father died the next morning at the age of 89. My mother was constantly writing cards of encouragement, and would write maybe eight a day. Then came the time when she could no longer write, and talking on the phone confused her. She was confined to a wheelchair. One day she said to Barry and me,

“I realize I cannot do many things, yet I can still smile, and that will be my service from now on.” Almost every day, someone in our family took my mother to the beach where we pushed her along the sidewalk. She would smile at everyone she passed, and they always smiled back. Her presence seemed to uplift them. She had found a way to serve right up until her death. I want to remember my creator and be grateful. Even if I am in physical pain and my body is not working the way I want it to, I want to remember to be thankful for the beauty of the earth, its people, and animals. I want to remember that gratefulness can transform any situation. When I was 20 years old, I lay dying in the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as a nursing student. Nothing could be found to help me, and my parents had been called to come to my side for a final goodbye. I knew I was dying, and I felt helpless. I felt very vulnerable as various doctors and medical students came into my room to “study” me and my condition. One doctor even used a wooden pointer on my body, as he addressed his students on the different things wrong with me. Then I remembered the power of gratitude. I started thanking everyone that did anything for me. As I did so, I felt different inside, and knew that the gratitude was giving me power to be myself once again. I began to thank God for my life, even though it seemed to be ending after such a short time here on earth. Each time I felt grateful, I felt a power move through me, and I no longer felt so helpless.

JUNE... the Love vibration THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS By: Elizabeth Summers

Hello Venus! This wonderful month of June and the Number Six brings beauty and love for others into our energy fields. The nesting influence of a comfy home and relationships including marriage leads statistics to indicate that more marriages occur in June than any other month of the year. Whether your Birthday Number is Six, your Life Lesson to improve upon is Six, or your current Personal Year energy issue is six… this information applies to you. In addition, the more one writes or says the Number Six, the more intensity it will bring to our lives. Although, indeed, ruled by the goddess of love, Venus, Number Six love energy is more like a “mother love” than a sensual experience. Frequently known as the “Cosmic Mother”, Number Six finds its strong love of family leading them to worry unnecessarily about their brood. This service-oriented person is deeply idealistic, having a great sense of duty for family, children and community projects. This frequently brings a reputation as one being a “pillar of the community”. Volunteering, scouts, little league, safe homes and cut and paste parties are instigated by folks with the loving, sympathetic and compassionate Number Six energy. A fault might be about becoming a slave to all these projects. Those souls born in the month of June or have this Life Path Number to improve upon frequently marries early before age thirty as they want their own families to care for. However, a possible second reason to do so is to escape from an abusive nuclear family situation and create their own more peaceful nurturing environment for themselves and others. Whatever the reason, there is frequently but not always, an ending to this early emotional venture between the ages of Twenty-Eight and Thirty as every soul moves through its first Saturn Return of looking back onto their previous life experiences and “regroup”! Caution must be exercised by these “Dear Abby” types as Number Six tends to set down the law as they see it and expect others to follow obediently showing little tolerance for the opinions of others. To admit that they are wrong or mistaken about a matter is not a strong point. This all stems from one’s unwillingness to allow their views to be changed. The bottom line is that Number Six personalities must not expect everyone to conform to their rules or this domineering attitude will lead to resentment, bad feelings and possible poor judgments. Number Six has a fear of poverty thus making them very cautious about spending money. When a nest egg is stashed away for a

16 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

“rainy day” they are more content and generous. Having said that, the Number Six is known as one of the “money Numbers” as the flow will be there in businesses and in one’s life as long as service is the primary motivator. The Venus influence makes Number Six a lover not a fighter. Not comfortable with disharmony, especially in the home, Number Six personalities can become victims of their own circumstances. As with the Sun sign of Cancer, they “want everybody to be happy!” Enjoyment can come from the atmosphere created by debate but Number Six folks tend to avoid participation in arguments. If topics are not too deep, then they might participate. Obtaining a good education, cultivating tolerance, compassion and understanding will go a long way to emotionally stabilize this loving magnetic personality. With the power to make friends more easily than any other Number except Number Five, Number Six proves to be a most loyal friend willing to “fight to the death” for whatever person or cause it espouses. This is especially true if the issues are causing jealousy and discord. While doing battle, this “knight” should wear an “armor” of lucky colors of blue, pink or rose with pendants of emerald or turquoise

near the skin. Hopefully, the jousting will occur on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday with dates that reduce down to a Three, Six or Nine.

over-stuffed chair with cookies and milk while being surrounded by candlelight with fragrances of potpourri wafting through the air. The only thing making it better would be watching the Muppets on Sesame Street on TV and just knowing that all is right with the world. Just as in June, Mother Earth is “busting out all over” may we too do the same with great love and “flowering” about ourselves.

Health issues may arise during a life time as the sense of self-sacrifice, the burdens of too much responsibility, duty and concern for others seem to deplete the energy fields and thus the physical body of anyone influenced by the Number Six. Caution and attention needs to be paid especially the “mother” parts of the human body such as breasts, ovaries, and any reproductive organs. Illness in these body parts forces the caretaker to care for herself first and not everybody else. Illnesses are always the last resort of the soul to get one’s attention to “wake up” to issues needing attention. This warm, loving idealist born on the Sixth, Fifteen or Twenty-Fourth of any month must learn to assume responsibility, serve others and counsel freely. At the same time, all must be done efficiently and methodically. Try never to be one who is stubborn, domineering, exacting or unreasonable. This wanting to have your own way and imposing your ideas on others comes from fear and your own ego and not from the wonderful cosmic love you are known for. To know the Number Six personality energy is to know peace, harmony and beauty. Experiencing this energy gives one that gentle “warm fuzzy” feeling we would get as we nestle into the

Aromatherapy and Yoga YOGA FROM MY EXPERIENCE

“The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem For that sweet odour which doth in it live.” Sonnet 54, Shakespeare Discovering essentials oils and their therapeutic uses, or aromatherapy, can be as transformative as the first time you realized the profound depth of yoga. Yoga and meditation teach us about ourselves, but how can aromatherapy enlighten our paths? Smell affects us. We’re easily attracted or repulsed by smells. Like tentacles, the senses reach outward, find information and bring it back into the brain to be perceived. However, these perceptions can distract yogis. In Ashtanga, the eight limbs of yoga, pratyahara is the fifth limb. Pratyahara is withdrawal of the five senses whereby yoginis deliberately turn off the sensations that draw us out from our concentration and inner calm. However, choosing essential oils wisely can enhance our yoga practice, rather than distract us. Essentials oils affect the body, emotions and mind via brain and blood. Some oils wake up the mind too much for the subtleties of meditation. The wrong oil or oil combination can ruin yoga class for sensitive people, or draw out negative emotions. In a group, ask first if someone prefers that no scent be used. Aromatherapy stimulates and influences wellness in many ways. We can uplift moods, enhance breathing exercises or pranayama, invigorate the body and activate asana practice. It can ground us, bring clarity and deepen meditation. Many yoga studios clean mats with essential oils. Mixed with water, folks spray them from misters to cool down. Oils are

used to anoint chakras or added to an unscented base oils for massage. Ayurveda suggests that abhyanga, massaging the skin with oil, cultivates contentment. It literally changes how we feel within our own skin. Abhyanga can be done before class to enhance elasticity of limbs or afterwards to sooth muscles and joints. Here are a few oils to complement yoga, pranayama and meditation: Rosemary, Rosmarinus Officinalis is well known for its upwardmoving, cognitive-enhancing qualities. Try adding two drops into one ounce of jojoba oil and massage into the scalp. This moisturizes dry hair and treats dandruff as it stimulates scalp and brain. Shampoo out. “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember.” Ophelia in Hamlet, Shakespeare Blue chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, stimulates immune function, is anti-inflammatory and calms nervous headaches and stomachaches. Mild enough to apply directly to skin, rub a drop onto belly, temples or skin irritations. Himalayan cedarwood, Cedrus deodora is a balanced, sweeter version than other cedar oils, such as C. atlantica. Excellent for congestion, it’s associated with the heart and lungs. Use this oil to enhance pranayama, perseverance and endurance. Dab your throat. Clary sage, Salvia sclarea, balances the female system at all stages from acne to cramps, from labor to depression and hot flashes. Add several drops to a spritzer bottle of water and spray lightly toward face.

Birch, betula album, relieves achy muscles and joints, increasing circulation. Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanioides, calms nerves, muscles strains and sprains. Try mixing a few drops of each into 4 ounces of almond oil for massage. Keep away from eyes. Immortelle, Helichrysum angustifolium, is great for the complexion, lungs and headaches. Spritz the face as a toner and again before pranayama. When it comes to Jasmine, I prefer Jasminum sambuc with its higher, sweeter note over J. officinale. J. sambuc is excellent for mantra meditation and to strengthen love. Anoint your temples. Tulsi or Holy Basil, Ocimum sanctum, is a sacred plant known to strengthen compassion. Tulsi loosens and clears congestion, purifying the respiratory system. It also has anti-inflammatory qualities and is said to bring physical endurance. Wear on your wrist. Mints, Mentha spp., clear the mind quickly and relieve nausea and headaches. Lavenders, Lavandula spp., release tension, promote rest, sooth burns and repel insects. Neroli, blossom of Citrus aurantium; Petitgrain, leaves and twigs of Citrus aurantium; and other citruses such as lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, and orange cultivate happiness. Use in spritzers, massage oil or sniff from the bottle. Try a drop of Cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, in your latte to digest milk and balance caffeine. At our home we love chai. A quick version is to mix three drops each of the essential oils cinnamon, ginger and cardamom with one drop clove into 12 ounces of honey. Add a spoonful to hot, black tea. Spikenard, Nardostachys jatamanasi, used by Mary Magdalene to anoint Jesus’ feet, is critically in danger of becoming extinct. Please be mindful, don’t buy it. Rosewood, Aniba rosaeaodora, another endangered species, is completely wiped out in parts of Africa. Over-harvesting continues in Brazil. Don’t buy natural rosewood either. More at iucnredlist.org. Sandalwood grows primarily in Asia and Australia. Santalum album, from India, is one of the world’s oldest perfumes. It’s also threatened with extinction, but the Australian isn’t. Please only use very small quantities and mix into jojoba to extend use. Don’t purchase sandalwood carvings. Prized for a calming base note and cooling properties, sandalwood promotes peace. Traditionally used for mental clarity and meditation, anoint your third eye and pray for peace.

Recognizing the Difference between Therapy and Learning in Equine-Assisted Work

HEALING WITH HORSES

By: Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT

Within the industry of equine-assisted learning (EAL) and therapy there is a great debate among professionals; what is the difference between learning and therapy? Having been a professional in experiential education for over 20 years, this was never an issue, because each experience was therapeutic regardless of who was leading it, and we were trained how to process an experience without being a therapist. For us there was a lane that we stayed in. We weren’t therapists, but we knew how to keep the conversation going in the context of experiential learning. More and more there is a growing gray area between the two, especially between coaching and therapy. Those who facilitate equine-assisted psychotherapy or counseling are licensed and credentialed mental health professionals, according to the state. Those that fall into the learning side of the gray middle area are usually coaches, educators, instructors, etc. We recreation therapists fall somewhere in the middle. If you are interested in getting into equine-assisted learning and therapy as a career, or as a client, it is important to know the difference. “The Scope of Practice describes the procedures, actions, and processes that a healthcare practitioner is permitted to undertake, in keeping with the terms of their professional license.” Within any profession, there is a scope of work, or scope of practice that is defined by their competencies, and by any applicable governing organizations, and in some instances the federal government. It is the job of the facilitator to operate within the scope of their work, and do their best not to cross the lines while facilitating groups and individuals. Anyone can be trained to facilitate an EAL session focusing on basic competencies within the domains of horse knowledge and experiential education. This represents a facilitator level of practice, and would include working as a co-facilitator, equine specialist, or lead facilitator for a learning based group with basic goals. Only those with training and credentialing as a mental health professional can offer “therapy.” For example, a professional trained and licensed as an educator could not be the lead facilitator in a mental health session. This would be out of the scope of their work. A licensed therapist would be the lead in a psychotherapy session.

20 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

The difference between coaching and therapy The coaching process differs from counseling in that counseling focuses on healing from past trauma, and coaching focuses on the future, through goal-setting and accountability. In the process of change, the horse can be the companion, and even the guide. However, it can be helpful to have a coach serve as the navigator or interpreter. Coaches can often fill that role. You are the driver in the process of change, but just as a horse asks questions during interaction, such as, “Are you going to be the leader?” a coach can help ask that one question that reveals a new personal insight that can be the key to reaching your personal goals. A coach is not a therapist. They don’t process past trauma or past emotions. They do, however, help a client look to the future. Let’s take a closer look at how coaching and horse interaction can be a life-changing combination. Of course, clients can still have releases during a session. It is critical that a coach has the necessary skills to keep that client safe, knows their own emotional competencies, and has the tools to keep the session in the learning mode.

Therapy, on the other hand, looks much different. A therapist, first of all, is someone who has received education, then training and supervision, takes a board exam, and is then licensed in their state as a mental health professional. There are several avenues the professional can take to licensure. They are: licensed clinical social worker, licensed practicing counselor, mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist, clinical psychologist, or an addictions counselor. A recreation therapist falls into the gray area in that they are qualified to lead mental health services including group therapy inside a clinical setting yet cannot go into private practice. In some states they are licensed. Only someone credentialed as a mental health professional can legally offer mental health services. In their work, they tend to focus on processing past trauma, or working through a chronic mental health condition. Therapists are more flexible, in that they can move into more coaching-based methodologies, but it all depends on what the client’s goals are as to the qualifications necessary for the facilitator. It is very easy to cross the line from learning into therapy, and in some cases that can be OK, if the facilitator is a therapist. However, if the purpose of the session is a learning or coaching goal, and the facilitator is not a licensed mental health professional, they have to stay within the scope of their work, for the safety of everyone involved. In the end, it is the ethical responsibility of both the consumer and the facilitator to do their due diligence. For the consumer, it is about doing their homework when investigating a potential therapist, coach, or horse professional for equine-assisted services. For the professional it is about knowing their professional limits, and staying in their lane. If they don’t have the required competencies to meet the needs of a potential client, then they need to bring in a partner who

does have those competencies, or seek out additional training. There are many certifications out that train people to facilitate equine-assisted learning and therapy, and there is a great disparity between the good ones and the not so good ones. In the end, professionals also need to do their homework before taking on the amazing responsibility of facilitating the healing relationship between humans and horses. NOTES ON PRINCE, PAIN, AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION SOUND MATTERS

By: Steven Halpern

Writing this column on May 8, the news of Prince’s death is still stunning and painful. During a moment of silence at the ZMR Music Awards on Saturday night, you could feel the wave of emotion in the room. It still feels like it happened yesterday. There are still so many unanswered questions. The tabloids offer multiple theories and conflicting reports. Bottom line, though; no one knows how much pain Prince was experiencing on a daily basis. Like millions around the world, I wish he had reached out earlier for professional help; maybe he’d still be with us. At the airport flying home from New Orleans, I glanced through the commemorative issue of TIME: Prince: An Artist’s Life: 19582016. I haven’t read it all yet, but the articles and photos gave me a much deeper appreciation of how extraordinary he was. If you are a Prince fan, you might want to check it out. I remember that in those early days of New Age music, artists like myself, Iasos and Joel Andrews often performed wearing lots of purple. Our LPs had purple print in the liner notes and artwork. As many readers of this magazine know, violet is the color of the seventh chakra, and the seventh ray. Perhaps you too, were touched by the emotional impact of seeing so many images from around the world, of buildings, monuments, and stages bathed in purple, in tribute to Prince’s passing. From a color-healing perspective, this was a non-denominational, spiritual, uplifting moment. One wonders what the effect on our collective consciousness has been.

The Sleep Revolution You’ve probably seen her being interviewed, or read a review of Arianna Huffington’s new bestseller, The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night at a Time. I read it at 35,000 feet, and I highly recommend it to you. Back in March 2011, I reported in this column that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had just stated: “Insufficient Sleep is a Public Health Epidemic.” The problem has gotten worse since then. I’ve discussed suggestions for helping you get to sleep in the past, and will do so in greater depth again. The economic and personal impact of not getting enough sleep affects millions of us. Latest estimates place the cost at over $65 billion a year. What makes Arianna’s book so valuable is her writing style. While conveying lots of hard facts and research, she does so in a very conversational manner, and with humor. My only reservation is her very limited list of recommendations involving sound. She’s obviously a fan of guided visualizations, especially one read by her sister. (It kept me awake.) In 1997, I reported on the non-relaxed response of attendees in three consecutive health expos to the recording of classical music she suggests. (It didn’t work for 80% of us.) Arianna, if this gets to your desk, let me suggest that you check out the #1 best-selling music for sleep, which has a proven track record of over 40 years of helping millions to fall asleep. These

albums include CHAKRA SUITE, OCEAN SUITE, SLEEP SOUNDLY, and SLEEPSCAPE DELTA. Why is this music so effective in helping you to relax and fall asleep? There are hidden stressors in most music that keep your mind busy, rather than promoting a quiet mind. Check out my brief video on the “Scalus Interruptus Effect” at https://youtu.be/-Ml8KiWH_1E, and you may want to supplement your list of recommendations. Most of the individuals I meet at my workshops and speaking engagements over the past decades would certainly agree. Namaste, Steven Halpern Steven Halpern is a Grammy® nominated recording artist celebrating his 41st anniversary as “the most trusted name in sound healing.” His latest releases are MINDFUL PIANO, AMONG FRIENDS: 1975-2015: A 40 Year Retrospective (nominated for the ZMR Meditation/Relaxation Album of the Year), and CLUTTER CLEARING AT THE SPEED OF SOUND.

Play as SPIRITUAL PRACTICE CYBERWEAVE SPIRITUALITY AND THE INTERNET

By: Mary Montgomery

Recently I tuned in to a TED Talk Hour on NPR that was dedicated to play (npr.org/programs/ted-radiohour/390249044). What an eye opener! Research is not only showing that play can make us more empathetic and loving, it is also demonstrating the serious effects that play deprivation has on children (both human and animal). Here are just a few highlights from that broadcast: How Can Playing A Game Make You More Empathetic? Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, a Professor of Pain Studies, and the Canada Research Chair in the Genetics of Pain at McGill University, has done experiments that indicate that the lack of empathy of strangers toward one another is caused by stress. The researchers also found a 15-minute fix. It turns out that playing a collaborative video game like Rock Band with strangers decreases stress, and makes you more empathetic to one another. National Institute for Play (nifplay.org): NIFPlay founder Dr. Stuart Brown is noted for his research that demonstrates the strong correlation between playful activity and success. He came to this realization, however, under somber circumstances. In 1966, as a young psychiatry professor, Brown was part of a team that investigated Charles Joseph Whitman, the mass murderer who gunned down 49 people, killing 16, at the University of Texas in Austin. One thing that stood out was the fact that Whitman’s stern and abusive father did not allow his young son to participate in spontaneous or exploratory play. Neighbors remembered the father severely disciplining his son whenever he attempted to play. Brown went on to study murderers at Texas’s Huntsville Prison, and discovered that in every single case, these men had been deprived of normal play experiences as children. In his TED Talk, “Play is more than just fun” (TED.com), Brown pointed out that play is important to our very survival. For example, researchers allowed one group of mice to play as young mice do, and prevented play in another group of mice. When a cat odor-soaked collar was placed among the mice, all of them immediately fled and hid. The difference: the mice that were allowed to play eventually started exploring and came out. The play-deprived mice remained hidden and died.

26 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

It is this type of stark research that is causing scientists like Brown to search for the ways that play positively affects our lives. The NPR TED Talk Hour on Play features several other interesting interviews including: “What Can Bonobos Teach Us About Play?” with Primatologist Isabel Behncke Izquierdo, “How Can Video Games Improve Our Real Lives?” with Jane McGonigal, Director of Games Research & Development at the Institute for the Future (iftf.org), and “Who’s That Guy Riding The Subway In His Underwear?” with comedian Charlie Todd, founder of Improv Everywhere (improveverywhere.com), a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. The full talks of all of these folks can be viewed at TED.com. All this got me to thinking about how play can actually be part of a deep and fruitful spiritual practice. I wondered if other folks might be thinking the same thing, and did a Google search for “play and spirituality.” Hmm… there wasn’t a lot on this, yet there were a few important bread crumbs including: Spiritualityandpractice.com: This website, which is devoted to providing resources for spiritual journeys, points out that all spiritual traditions have prophets who encourage us not to take

ourselves too seriously. These include Coyote, Nasrudin, St. Francis and his order of Jesters of the Lord, Zen masters, Taoist sages, and Hasidic storytellers. Their spiritual message: “What we know is not worth knowing, and what’s worth knowing cannot be known through our ways.” Play as a spiritual practice (examiner.com/article/play-as-aspiritual-practice): This excellent article pointed out that the word “spirit” comes from the Latin word spiritus, meaning “breath.” Spirit and spirituality by its very nature is animating and alive. Play, and playful thought, can hold a very powerful way to connect to what our Spirit needs to thrive. This article also featured Nika Quirk, an InterPlay.org improv leader who believes that play is indeed a spiritual practice. Quirk describes play as a profound act. Play becomes the way to connect to, and fill, the often magical space from which we create. Recognizing the deep meaning and healing that can be found as we connect to our playful, creative, and inspirational selves can be a truly spiritual process. 38 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

Worlds Apart NEVER ANOTHER TODAY By Jim Kaminecki

Standing, gazing straight ahead but looking at nothing in particular, something appeared. It was an insight, much larger in scope than the sum of the parts being seen. The image directly ahead could not have been a more perfect example of comparison and contrast. It was as if there was a message to be conveyed in a photo shoot, and all the actors were placed there by design. Separated by no more than two feet, two sets of two individuals stood, each pair engaged in a one-on-one conversation. Two men were conversing; they were both dressed similarly in black. There was certainty in their faces; after all, they had been here consistently for at least the last eight months. There were positive expectations, knowing that whoever arrived today had been there before, and they know them all. They are well versed in the routines, and know what to expect. There would be no mistakes this day, as the event is planned precision, even if there is some variation in the order of events. There was nothing forgotten, everything that they needed was brought with them. Regardless of who else arrived that day, they knew that they would return consistently, whether it was the next day, the next week, or the next month. They knew all the details, and the certainty showed in their faces as they calmly discussed the topic at hand. The woman and man speaking together were both dressed in a similar fashion as well, a bright color. There was a quizzical look on their faces as they discussed things, whatever the topic. A few questions may have crossed their minds: Who would be coming here today? How long would they stay? What will they do? Would they know anyone? What are they going to be doing? Did they bring everything they need? Would they do anything correctly, or would there be nothing but mistakes? Would they even both return the next day, the next week, or the next month, let alone in eight months? Yes, there was curiosity. Confusion, if not a little concern, was the overriding theme expressed on their faces as their smiles appeared almost forced. There was barely 24 inches of space separating them.

The world could not have appeared more different for each pair, both the world as it is now, and how it may look for them in the future. There was a sadness that came over me as I reflected on one pair, and great excitement for the other. Of course, every mental note was inferred, without speaking directly to any of them. Instead the reliance was on context, body language, and observation from 20 feet away. The short distance separating them included a pane of glass. One pair was outdoors on the walkway, and the other was indoors. These four people were not in the same room, but any of them could have chosen to easily walk through a door to be on the other side of that pane of glass. There is certainty in my mind that I will see the men in black again soon, equipped with cigarettes, and an alcoholic drink in their hand. I expect they will continue to stand on that walkway, like they have done consistently for all these months. I am less certain that I will see the man and woman in orange again soon, or after these next four weeks. This is their first introduction to martial arts. Even if it is something enjoyable, they may prefer another school, or another discipline. After all, they are testing the waters of a new experience. Certainty and uncertainty; Two different mindsets. Two different feelings. Two different worlds. AROMATHERAPY: HEALING WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

Interview with Sarah Ingram from eSCENTialsAroma By: Anna J. Anthony Anna J Anthony: Sarah, when did you first become interested in essential oils? Sarah Ingram: After the birth of my children, I started realizing all of the everyday bad things that were going into their bodies. I started paying more attention to ingredients in items such as lotions, foods, and even medications. I was appalled by what we were doing as a society to our children! I had a strong passion for health, yet I knew that my focus wasn’t being a doctor, or “full blown science.” I felt that I fit more into the natural health sector. I spent 15 years as an event planner. I was a fan of the famous celebrity wedding planner David Tutera’s television show, CELEBrations. He had one episode where the bridesmaids all created their own perfume as a gift from the bride. I thought what if I one-up this idea, and use all natural essential oils? I then started my own business hosting home parties where the attendees created their own perfumes using all natural ingredients. I loved it! I still love it! Although home parties are

40 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

difficult to do. At these events attendees were asking questions about which oils were good for various ailments. It felt very natural at this point that I should get my certification as the next step. After receiving my Aromatherapist certification, I started working with people, and discussing the issues they were hoping to resolve. I started playing with oils and creating my line. AA: There are many large companies that are bringing awareness back to the benefits of essential oils over the past few years. How has this benefitted or challenged your business, and what sets you apart from them? SI: It has been a benefit, as lately when I speak to people about my products they have heard of essential oils. The challenge at times can be that they might assume that I am looking to sell them a type of membership, when that is not my focus at all. What sets me apart is that I have the education. I create readyto-use oil blends. I make it easy, so that someone doesn’t have

to worry about what quantities to put, and what to mix together for a specific issue. I do all of that for them. I also create custom oil blends. I have created specific blends for cancer patients, acid reflux, and restless leg syndrome, just to name a few. It is important to be educated on the properties of the oils, in order to safely and properly prescribe these. AA: I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Body Mind Spirit Expo. One of the many things about you and your products that intrigued me was that you mentioned that you grow your own herbs that you use in your products. SI: I grow many of my own herbs, such as the lavender, chamomile, and mint that are used in my herbal eye masks and sachets. My family and I are in the process of purchasing a farm that will be a full-blown lavender and herb farm. I have a distiller, and over the next two to three years I will be able to distill my own essential oils. There are many people who have no idea where their oils are coming from. I am so excited to know that they will be 100% pure, grown from my herbs, and distilled under my care and watch. AA: This is so exciting! Do you envision the farm being a place that your clients can come to and attend classes, shop, etc.? SI: Yes! I plan on having a stand that would be open on weekends. If the property allows, I would eventually like it to be a place where we could host events such as baby showers and bridal showers. I would like to host a lavender festival as well.

I have one for hormonal balance. Women are drawn to flowers because they naturally balance our hormones. Breathe Deep is a respiratory blend for asthma and allergy relief. My bug spray and dog products have been a big hit! I have a crystal infused metaphysical line. They combine essential oils based on a goal you are trying to achieve. My Alignment blend is jasper-infused, and uses essential oils that align chakras. Cleanse and Heal spray is a fluorite-infused sage spray. It’s a smokeless alternative to sage cleansing. It’s great for space and aura cleansing. In addition to providing custom blends, I can also create private label blends for your business as well. AA: These blends have been used for ages, and come from Mother Nature. It makes sense that they would be the best remedies. SI: Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. It was first used by the Egyptians. Cleopatra used to soak her sails in essential oils in order to attract men. It was used by the Greeks, Romans, and Persians. The term aromatherapy was first coined in 1910 by the French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, when he tragically caught his arm on fire, and dipped it in a vat of lavender essential oil that was next to him, and it healed without a scar. This is how he discovered the topical healing properties of essential oils. AA: Where can we purchase your products?

AA: I’m getting that you really like lavender! Why is it your favorite?

SI: You can purchase on my website eSCENTialsAroma.com. I sell my products at a few different chiropractor’s offices, yoga studios, and retail stores. I am looking to expand my retail presence, and am open to inquiries.

SI: Yes, it is my favorite! I love it because it is the safest and most versatile herb and essential oil there is. It is an antidepressant, antibacterial, antiviral, antispasmodic, as well as having many other properties. It does it all!

Anna J. Anthony is the Advertising Coordinator for Conscious Community Magazine. She is passionate about collaborating with and promoting local artisans, Lightworkers, and conscious business owners. In her free time, Anna studies the art of tarot, the paranormal, and is curious about various forms of consciousness, and spreading light and magic to others.

AA: Your packaging is beautiful, and I love that your ingredients are wild-crafted! SI: Thank you. I love cobalt blue! I always wanted my packaging to be elegant. The ingredients I use are all organic wild-crafted. Wild-crafted is when the plant has naturally grown in its own environment, and nothing has been done to it. There are many organic farms that have been in families for hundreds of years using heirloom seeds, yet they can’t afford to become certified organic. My wholesaler supports these types of farms. A great example would be the difference between farm-raised salmon and wild salmon. The wild salmon would be considered “wildcrafted.” I use the highest grade essential oils that I can find, and I feel that makes all the difference. Many of the essential oils you find in the stores are already diluted with the carrier oil. I am able to use oils that are not common, such as pure rose oil, yarrow, and many others that you cannot buy from a shelf. I take all the therapeutic properties of these high quality oils so they compound each other. It’s done for you. You don’t have to learn it yourself. AA: What are some of your favorite and best selling products? SI: My aromatherapy diffuser sprays such as the Linen spray for sleep. The roll-ons are a favorite because they are so easy to use.

NATURAL PEST DEFENSE

By: Sue Odland

As the heat of the summer intensifies, garden pests do too. Instead of choosing chemical pesticides to eliminate unwanted visitors in your newly planted garden, employ the wisdom of Mother Nature to provide effective natural pest control. These proven methods are simple, inexpensive and safe for your family and wildlife. Using a combination of the following strategies will provide your garden with wellrounded protection this season. Companion Planting – Friends with Benefits: Planting vegetables that complement each other together produces healthier plants, better yields and a strong defense against garden bugs and pests. However, some plants do not grow well with others. Always review a companion planting chart or reference list before planting to ensure the matching of friends not foes. Search on-line for a companion planting vegetable guide to find easy reference charts and recommendations. A few examples of friendly companion pairings include:

42 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

Beans with potatoes - bush beans and potatoes planted in alternating rows will protect one another from the potato beetle and Mexican bean beetle. Carrots with Leeks - the strongly scented leek repels bothersome carrot flies. Dill with cabbage or cucumbers - the dill improves flavor and repels pests. Onions and garlic with tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, cucumbers, spinach or strawberries - the strong scents repels bugs and animals. However, do not plant onions and garlic with beans, peas, sage or asparagus, as the onions and garlic will inhibit the other plants’ growth. Spinach with Radishes - radishes lure pesky leaf miners away from spinach. The miners feast on the radish leaves, yet do not damage the radishes growing below the surface. Tomato with Basil - increases yield and enhances flavor.

Praying Mantis – this carnivorous insect reduces bug populations naturally and helps maintain a healthy ecological balance in the garden. Purchase the praying mantises as eggs; place in garden or around the yard. The eggs will hatch after 4-6 weeks of warm weather producing hundreds of small protectors ready to patrol the garden.

Flowering Defense The addition of certain beneficial flowers to the garden will create an attractive garden defense. The blooms will also supply vital nutrition for bees, butterflies and local wildlife. Proven varieties include: Marigold - the flower’s strong scent repels many destructive garden insects and pests. Circle the garden with the brightly colored plants or place them throughout the rows of vegetation. Chrysanthemum - the flower head of the chrysanthemum plant holds pyrethrum, which is the main ingredient used in many commercial insecticides. This natural agent repels pests including the voracious Japanese beetle which devours over 300 varieties of plants. Lavender - repels fleas, moths and white flies. It’s an all-purpose addition to any garden. Nasturtium - a delicate, spicy edible flower, nasturtiums provide cucumbers and tomatoes with protection from cucumber beetles, aphids, whiteflies and squash bugs, while attracting beneficial beetles. Petunia - repels asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, aphids, tomato hornworms and other damaging insects. The Buzz Beneficial Insects are an excellent form of organic pest control. These tiny garden protectors search and eliminate bugs from your flowers and vegetables. They can be purchased at local garden and feed stores or ordered on-line. Using beneficial insects offers both adults and children hands-on experience with the natural cycles of life. To learn more about these remarkable garden defenders, explore www.planetnatural.com or www. gardeninsects.com. Popular species of beneficial insects include: Ladybugs – these adorable garden visitors are extremely efficient at controlling aphids (tiny white flies that attack tomatoes). Purchase them in bulk. Release them into your garden in early evening to allow time for them to find food and water. As ladybugs require water when first released; sprinkle water over the chosen area before you set them free. They will receive future moisture from the numerous aphids they will consume.

Beneficial Nematodes – these tiny microscopic roundworms can destroy over 200 species of harmful insects including caterpillars, grubs, Japanese beetles and other unwelcome in-ground insects. Add beneficial nematodes to the garden by mixing them with water, then spray or sprinkle them onto areas with noticeable or suspected insect infestation. Apply the nematodes in the evening when temperatures are cooler. DIY Tricks and Tips: Use these simple ideas as needed to deter garden pests: Squirrels - Add an artificial owl near your tomatoes to protect ripening fruits from squirrels. The owl is a natural predator of squirrels, rabbits and other small animals. Rabbits - Place a few rubber snakes or an old hose around the garden to mimic a snake to keep rabbits from visiting. They will avoid the sight of this natural predator. Birds - Protect ripe berries from birds by placing floating row covers over the plants and bushes. Comprised of sheer, lightweight fabric, these covers are inexpensive and effective in keeping insects and birds out, while keeping moisture and heat in. Slugs – There are numerous natural methods to eliminate this notorious garden pest including; beer traps, seaweed mulch, copper borders and protective aluminum foil shields. Search for natural slug control on-line to learn more about these easy DIY techniques. Flying insects – Make a simple insecticidal soap to eliminate aphids and other soft bodied insects from your garden and household plants. Add 2tbsp. of dishwashing soap to 1 gallon of water. Pour into a spray bottle; spray plant, soaking both sides of the leaf and stem. Wait 2-3 days, repeat as needed. Simple, safe, natural pest control solutions abound for home gardeners seeking earth-friendly alternatives for repelling pests. Bring peace to your garden this season by sending pesticides out and bringing Mother Nature in.

June 2016 COSMIC DAILY WEATHER WITH SUMMER TAKING PLACE ON THE 20TH, MAKE SURE TO STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES, AND IF A FEW OF THEM ARE READY IT’S OK TO PICK THEM. YOU’VE WAITED LONG ENOUGH!

Overview This month is about movement and perseverance. Even when you think that you can’t, you’ll find out that you can. The new Moon will give you an extra boost of insight while the full Moon in Sagittarius will help to fill in some gaps. At the end of the month a beautiful astrological event will occur that you’ll enjoy. Knowing this should help you with the mutable Grand Cross that kicks off the month. As a reminder, mutable signs are those that follow fixed signs. They are flexible in nature, and often change their tune based upon actions, emotions, choices, or beliefs. A Grand Cross occurs when there are four planets involved. This Grand Cross involves Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. So you can expect to be confronted with a few changes. None of these should steer you off course, yet you could find that you’ll need to remain focused on your goals. With summer taking place on the 20th, make sure to stop and smell the roses, and if a few of them are ready it’s ok to pick them. You’ve waited long enough!

** Please see the end of the month for information about the Moon Void of Course (VoC). **

46 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

Wednesday, June 1 We start the day with a mutable Grand Cross in the sky. It could be a little difficult to stay focused with all of the opportunities that are available to you. Do your best to concentrate on the ideas that are likely to bring you the most reward. If you do that then you’ll be golden. Moon VOC at 10:43 AM 9:48 PM in Taurus.

Thursday, June 2 A retrograde Mars in Scorpio is taking a good look at Mercury in Taurus. It’s probably a good time to evaluate if you are moving towards the things that you want and value out of life. The retrograde Mars wants you to rethink change. Now is as good a time as any to reinvent yourself in a way that is more suitable for you.

Friday, June 3 During the day the Moon leaps over Mercury on its way out of Taurus. What was that you said? Use my intuition as a guide? If you do that one thing, and plant your seeds in the right part of the garden, then you’ll be one step closer to achieving what it is that you want. Just make sure that you know what it is that you want. Moon VoC 6:04 PM to 9:02 PM in Gemini.

Saturday, June 4 Oh, Snap! We’ve got a New Moon in Gemini today at 10:01 pm CDT. This new Moon is teaming up with the Sun and Venus as they are conjunct. It’s like a game of musical chairs where three people are fighting for one chair. Instead of one person missing out they’ve come up with a different strategy, where they all sit in the chair together and become one. What this means is that your values, your intention, and your intuition have merged into one. This will allow you to overcome any obstacle that dares to present itself.

Monday, June 6 The Moon is quite comfortable in its home sign of Cancer. You are protecting and nurturing at the same time. Nothing is going to get in your way today. It’s like you’ve just been gifted with an extra dose of motivation, even though Mars is retrograde. This motivation has nothing to do with moving at the speed of lightening just so that you can say that you did it. It has everything to do with moving towards your heart’s desires so that you can say that you did it the right way.

Tuesday, June 7 If it feels like you’ve missed a detail, then you might have. Go back and check your understanding of a particular situation, before you act under misguided information. There might be a fly in the ointment, and you wouldn’t want to just leave it there, because although it doesn’t seem like a big deal now (which it probably isn’t), it could turn out to be a hassle later on. VoC 7:19 PM until tomorrow.

Wednesday, June 8 Your strategy might change ever so slightly today. A disruption might cause you to choose an alternate path. It’s a minor change, so make sure that you don’t overreact and change course completely. Remember to remain focused, and don’t let a case of anxiety overwhelm. Use it to your advantage. VoC ends 1:48 AM in Leo.

Thursday, June 9 The Moon is in Leo, and it might be time to divulge some of your plans. Don’t let anyone talk you out of doing what’s best for you. Jupiter is teaming up with the North Node to make sure that you’ve taken care of the essentials. Now is not the time to chicken out. It’s time to cluck like a rooster and get this show on the road!

Sunday, June 5 As the Moon breaks away from the Sun and Venus it carries with it the values and perseverance. What seems like a struggle for many, is a little easier for you. This could be due to the positive aspect that has formed when Jupiter, the planet of abundance is positively aspected. You are grounded in truth today. There are no illusions about what it will take to feel emotionally, financially, and socially stable. It takes you! VoC 11:47 AM to 10:41 PM in Cancer.

Friday, June 10 Keep going is the motto of the day. The saying goes that the urge to give up occurs right before you’re about to meet success. Success just might show up wearing something very different than you’d originally thought. That’s ok, the key is to remember what success feels like, and not what it looks like. Voc 2:15 AM until 8:47 AM in Virgo. ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 47

Saturday, June 11 Today you’ve got Neptune, Pluto, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, the Moon, and The Sun on your side. This means that the faith that you’ve placed in your ability to change your circumstances is shining through. Emotionally you are ready for this, even if others aren’t.

Sunday, June 12 During the night the Moon crossed over the North Node and Jupiter to make a positive aspect to Mars. A moment of clarity has occurred for you and for others. It could feel a little somber, because you’re breaking away from comfortable patterns in favor of the relative unknown. It’s ok to feel that way sometimes. Take the day to smile, cry, and rejoice. You’ve found your voice. VoC 9:48 AM until 7:34 PM in Libra.

Monday, June 13 Somehow, today feels a little less stressful. You’ve tried to juggle everyone else’s emotions for so long that it’s nice to just be in touch with your own. It’s like meeting a long-lost love again. It just makes you feel at peace and happy inside. “Hello self. I’d like to reintroduce you to me.”

Tuesday, June 14 It will take some time to get used to the old new you. That might sound like a contradiction, yet it’s not. You’ll have to treat yourself with kindness and understanding. You’re becoming reacquainted, so it’s natural to feel a little out of sorts. Grab a cup of tea, and just have a long conversation with your inner-self, and that should do the trick.

Wednesday, June 15 That inner-vention that you had yesterday should have you feeling creative. It’s always a balancing act, yet it doesn’t have to be a tightrope walk. You’re not putting out fires, you’re building a masterpiece. Build with care, and you’ll be just fine. VoC 2:01 AM to 8:19 AM in Scorpio.

Thursday, June 16 Today is a game changer. The new old you, is now the real you. It’s like a merging of energies, and although Mars is retrograde no one would ever know it by the way you’re going about the day. You are buzzing about. It’s no longer about getting ready for the shift. You’ve actually shifted. Good job! 48 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

Friday, June 17 Neptune has gone retrograde, so what that means is that you’re putting faith in something new and different. You’ve just made an investment in your personal well-being. Yippee. You’re re-educating yourself on all things, you’re unlearning bad habits, and relearning good habits. Be excited because the stars are excited for you. VoC 8:54 AM to 8:35 PM in Sagittarius.

Saturday, June 18 Hey, here’s a little secret for the day…You know enough. Stop second guessing your decisions. What you don’t know you’ll figure out. Keep moving.

Sunday, June 19 Jupiter and the North Node are nestled together telling you exactly what you know. In case you didn’t get the planetary memo, here’s a little insight. You know what makes you happy, and you know what makes you healthy. It’s not always about everyone else. It’s actually about your health and well-being.

Monday, June 20 One would think that the planets get tired of challenges. Today is not that day. With a full Moon in Sagittarius at 6:04 AM, you could awaken with the idea that there is always an undercurrent of things that could potentially go wrong. So if you know that it is always a possibility, then you also know that there is the equal potential for things to go right. Choose the easy path. Just keep in mind that the easy path doesn’t mean that you end up not getting what you want. VoC 6:03 AM to 6:56 AM in Capricorn.

Tuesday, June 21 Jupiter and the North Node are sitting in the same chair today, as they are in hard conjunction. The two are counseling the Moon and Pluto, and to a harsher degree Neptune. What’s being said is that Summer is (finally) here, and the time is right to make change happen. If you’re carrying someone else’s baggage, then drop it right now. There is no room for that where you’re going.

Wednesday, June 22

Monday, June 27

As the Moon makes its way towards Aquarius, you feel emotionally connected to the journey. You are about to see yourself through other’s eyes. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals could very well be the new normal. You don’t have to adopt everything that you encounter but you should see some resemblance of the old you, and the you that you are now. Enjoy the scenery. VoC 3:58 AM to 3:10 PM in Aquarius.

Today the Moon is at the final stages of Pisces, and this is truly the ending of something. It’s the end of childlike thinking and nurturing. The kid gloves have come off, and it is time to get going. Yes, today, you have to “be an adult.” You’ve been waiting a long time. VoC ends 2:09 AM in Aries.

Thursday, June 23 Shedding worn out ideologies has been a bit of the norm for you lately. It’s become easier to let go of things that no longer serve you, in favor of those things that make you feel whole and complete. There is always that tug of war between what’s right for you and what’s right for them, yet you realize that choosing your mental health is the optimal solution. You can be very proud of what you’ve accomplished, because you sure have come a long way.

Friday, June 24 There is a little tension in the skies today. Emotional gratification may come at the expense of the need to move forward. You have two courses of action. You could either let your nerves get the best of you, or you could talk things out with a close friend. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone. You never know what words of wisdom are waiting on the other end of the conversation. VoC 10:49 AM to 9:32 PM in Pisces.

Saturday, June 25 Before Venus and the Sun separate, the Moon and Neptune want to share a little bit of advice. That advice is that with a little added effort anything is possible. If it feels right, then it usually is right.

Sunday, June 26

Tuesday, June 28 Today you might feel the urge to shed a tear or two. That’s normal on a day like today. It may seem like an ordinary Tuesday, yet it isn’t just an ordinary Tuesday. It’s not turbulence, and it’s not anxiety, it’s what we call relief. Take one breath in and breathe out. One step at a time, one breath at a time, and one thought at a time.

Wednesday, June 29 There is a party going on in the sky today; Mercury, Venus, and the Sun are finally connecting, and all of the other planets are singing along in unison. Saturn retrograde is the only planet that’s not at the party. That’s not a bad thing, since he can have a tendency to want to shut the party down before it’s over. Today the planets are celebrating you. It’s like a big ol’ welcome home party. So welcome back, you’ve been gone for a mighty long time. VoC 2:47 AM to 4:04 AM in Taurus.

Thursday, June 30 There is no better way to end this month. We have a nice big astrological kite in the sky, and it is pointing right at Pluto retrograde in Capricorn. The change that you were seeking has been found. The will to create stability motivated you to persevere, even when you doubted your abilities. You didn’t let obstacles stand in the way, you didn’t roll over and give up, you just got up and took one more step, and then another, and another. Bravo! VoC 7:20 PM until tomorrow. Kaye Berjot is a transformational astrologer who focuses on Chiron, the wounded healer. Read more articles, weekly astrology insights, and request readings at askkaye.com.

All eyes are on Neptune right now. That could have you a little nervous, because Neptune is the planet of illusion. Just remember that it’s also the planet of faith. If you’re having second thoughts about something, change the way you’re talking about the situation. Do you sound happy, sad, or scared when you bring up the subject? If you sound anything but happy, you probably want to find out what’s causing you to be less than happy. VoC 2:56 PM in until tomorrow.

GLUTEN ALLERGY or GLUTEN SENSITIVITY?

Or is it all just in my head? By: Staci Culbreath

By now, just about everyone in the world has heard of the word “gluten.” For those who haven’t heard of gluten, it is a protein in wheat, barley, rye, and all products that come in contact with these grains. While some people say that avoiding gluten is just a fad diet that has no health benefits, there are plenty of other people who swear that gluten is the cause for some of their health problems. The truth is that gluten is a common food allergen, and many people suffer from the effects of ingesting it. From not-so-serious symptoms such as bloating and gas to very serious symptoms such as chronic inflammation and malnutrition, reactions to gluten should never be ignored. Now whether the people who are affected by gluten have an actual gluten allergy or just a gluten sensitivity is something that only a doctor can determine through a series of blood tests, intestinal biopsies, and by reviewing the results of a glutenfree diet.

50 Conscious Community - JUNE 2016

WHAT IS A GLUTEN ALLERGY? People who suffer from a gluten allergy are diagnosed with a condition called Celiac disease. It happens when your immune system’s reaction to the gluten protein triggers your white blood cells to attack your small intestinal lining, causing damage known as villous atrophy. Damage such as this decreases the intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients.

WHAT IS A GLUTEN SENSITIVITY? A gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance is similar to a gluten allergy, but it stems from an entirely different immune system reaction and is not known to cause damage to the intestinal lining. With a gluten sensitivity, the body views the gluten protein as a foreign invader and causes inflammation inside and outside of the digestive tract.

SYMPTOMS OF A GLUTEN ALLERGY/INTOLERANCE The symptoms of an intolerance or allergy to gluten vary from person to person. Common signs that your body doesn’t like gluten include a lack of energy, chronic fatigue, migraines, headaches, gas, bloating, weight gain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, skin rashes, Keratosis Pilaris aka “chicken skin”, pain and inflammation throughout the body, swelling or pain in your joints such as fingers, knees or hips, and Fibromyalgia. In addition to these symptoms, those who have an allergy to gluten can experience weight loss and malnutrition from the damage to the intestinal lining. Continual ingestion of gluten can lead to conditions such as thyroid disease, Chrohn’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma and Multiple sclerosis.

MY PERSONAL STORY WITH GLUTEN About 5 years ago, I started noticing that I was having problems with gluten. After eating it, my joints (especially my fingers) and other parts of my body such as my legs, hips, and upper back would become painful and last for several days. So I went on a gluten-free diet and some of those pains went away. And once I got rid of gluten for awhile, I started noticing that my body was having negative reactions to other foods as well. When I asked my doctor to test me for food allergies, she was hesitant and told me that it is probably all in my head. But when the results came back, she and I were both surprised to find out that I had a laundry list of foods that I was allergic to. Now that I have created a diet that abstains from foods that I’m allergic to, I feel great! And when I cheat on my diet, the pain that I experience for several days after ingesting the offending foods is a reminder of why I must stick to the diet. My point is, that you should never ignore what your body is trying to tell you. Go to the doctor. Get some tests done. And even if it turns out that you’re not allergic to gluten or any other foods, you still may be sensitive to them. Common food allergens include dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, oats, tree nuts, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, barley, rye, oats, rice, corn, fish, and shellfish. The only way to find out if foods affect you negatively is to try a food elimination diet to identify the offending foods. Trust me, your body will be grateful.
