Letter from the Publisher Our May 9th Annual Conference is upon us again and I personally invite our readers to stop in and say hello to myself, our staff, and our writers. The free healing room is a major benefit to attendees. We have many new speakers and some old familiar faces. Take this opportunity to meet and greet old friends and to make new ones at this conference. The debate over assisted death is in its infancy. Lines are being drawn and sides are being picked. The religious organizations which preach mercy, but are challenged to practice it, are generally opposed and the public is generally in favor. This is not the only issue on which religion and public are on opposite sides, but one of many that is contributing to the decline in church membership almost universally, except for South America where religious choices are limited. The insurance industry has not weighed in yet but it is just a matter of time before economics tip the scale of decision in favor of assisting. We have self-determination why not self-termination. The movement of societal change is powerful now with the LGBT movement perhaps only the first wave of enormous social change. It has demonstrated how swiftly and completely change can occur in our country today. The movement to legalize marijuana has passed through its infancy and now gaining momentum like a large boulder descending a steep hill, sweeping away 75 years of social approbation in its path. The practical implications to government of de-criminalizing pot are substantial. Not only does it free up resources to more productive and meaningful deployment, it also contributes to re-stocking an empty cabinet where they keep the money. The Colorado experience is not lost on most of the rest of the country as we witness an influx of hundreds of millions of dollars into Colorado coffers from the sale of legal marijuana. For those Midwestern legislators and governors who want to further “study the potential sale of legal marijuana,” spend the time instead studying the balance sheet of the Colorado experience and plug some of the deficit holes in your own budget before that dam breaks as it did in Detroit. The flood of social change is real and here to stay for a long while. Assisted death will catch on and become the premier social change vehicle in its own time, which I believe is near. Meanwhile, back at the ranch of social inertia, there are political forces at work who talk about bringing about change through the political process. But their concept of change is a return to the failed policies of the past and the 1900’s, while repealing all legislation under the current administration. That’s not change—it’s retrofitting the present to mirror “the good old days” that destroyed the middle class. If you espouse progress you have to move your feet forward. It is a new world we live in with new challenges and new solutions yet to be imagined. We have the answers. What is lacking is the political will to put them into action. Let us hope that lack is at the top of the list of things to change in our new era. Until next time,

Gong meditations are one of the most deeply healing and restorative meditations possible, particularly because of the deep state of relaxation that is attained in response to the sound vibration. The gong works on many levels from the physical to emotional and spiritual in order to heal and transform. As the sound of the gong creates deep relaxation and clears the mind, it also aids in the reorganization of emotional energy. Gong meditation participants typically lie face up on a yoga mat or blanket in resting pose, (Shivasana), or sit in a chair to experience the tremendous healing sounds and vibrations.

All About Town…

Earth-Honored Healing Spring Equinox Chicago, IL April 21st, 2015 by Theresa Puskar “May the positive energy of Nature flow thru you allowing you to calm your thoughts and energize your spirit. Breathe in the Magic of Nature.” – WhiteMagickAlchemy.com To rouse myself from beneath winter’s placid blanket of snow, in an attempt to awaken to the budding newness of the season, I attended a Spring Equinox healing ceremony. While I have participated in these remarkable events in the past, this one felt particularly potent. A couple of days prior, my friend, fellow India journeyman and astrologer, Peter Hopkins, gifted me with a reading for my recent birthday. His astrological readings are always extremely insightful, accurate, and practical. In this particular communiqué, he mentioned that any actions I took on this year’s Spring Equinox would be of great significance. Thus where I was once casually considering attending, I felt a strong call to participate.

“I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.” - George Washington Carver

Theresa Puskar & Peter Hopkins

“Awaken your inner Shaman. She is your ancient self; the one who harmonizes Spirit and Earth, the part of you so deeply entrenched in nature that authenticity, intuition and love surround you. Awaken her from her dream and synchronize with the power to heal, step into purpose, and live as your sacred self.” – Melinda Rodriguez These ceremonies are always mesmerizing, magical and mysterious, and this one was no exception. The air of ancient mystery, juxtaposed with the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago added intrigue to this spiritual stew. While surrounded by massive brick buildings, modern billboards, and the city sounds of sirens, we were immersed in a delectable soup of 21st century urban life, commingled with ancient wisdom and deeply rooted spiritual tradition. This experience reminded me of a conversation I had years ago, while working with Native Medicine woman, Wolf Moondance. She was struck by how 8 Conscious Community - May 2015

much natural divine energy the city of Chicago held. Being such a large metropolis, she didn’t expect it. This ceremony was further evidence of the harmonious melding of the two worlds – modern living and ancient ritual.

This ceremony is rooted in the Andean shamanic tradition. Sacred space is created in the earth-honoring tradition, and calls in the transformative powers of the feminine divine. Three beautifully placed beds, adorned with flowers and greenery are carefully placed at the center of the sacred circle. Two attendees were chosen to receive a healing; one bed remained empty and in waiting. These resting places are holy, and whisper gentle, nurturing invitations to rest and allow the healing presence to serve.

Participants are cautioned that they may be called upon for healing. We are told that we should not resist if we feel faint or light-headed. We are assured that we will be supported as we drop to the floor. Within a minute of the ritual starting, I felt faint.

While yearning for the healing, I held on, not wanting to selfishly latch onto a place that is not mine for the taking. It is interesting how our egos try desperately to maintain control at these times of divine invitation. Needless to say, as always, divine spirit wins out, and I am directed to that third empty bed. My eyes are closed, and I hear rattles and drums beating all around me. I feel tingling and buzzing, especially along my spine. I begin to weep, not knowing why, and frankly, not caring. This is yet another awe-inspiring grace that my divine has blessed me with – another opportunity to express and heal the grief that has recently weighed heavy on my heart. “Some keep the Sabbath going to Church. I keep it staying at Home With a Bobolink for a Chorister, and an Orchard for a Dome.” - Emily Dickinson About a month ago I spoke of my intention to heal, and my voice was heard. I allowed Pachamama (divine Mother Earth) and my guides to do their work on me. This was another lesson in being attentive to the nudging of my spirit. I know that when my divine speaks to me, I need to take action, and then trust and surrender into the magic of the unknown. When I do, grace expands her mighty wings of transformation over me, and gives me so much more than I could ever imagine.

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” - John Muir I sat in the stillness and went within. I found myself filled with gratitude. I celebrated my life, my career, this magazine, my supportive friends, and family members. I am so graced. I was recently reminded by two friends just how extraordinary my life has been. Sometimes being so busy living it, I forget to step back and really see it in all its glory. I do have an amazing life, and I have no doubt that it will continue to be mapped with miracles and magnificence. While I spent only an hour meditating, walking, and taking in the sights and smells of nature, I could feel such a wonderful shift in my energy. I felt light – exempt from the pressures that usually weigh heavily upon me. Joy and peace filled my mind and body. I felt at one with our great Mother Earth and her glorious inhabitants. All is well. Here’s to removing my wellworn winter’s cloak, and to welcoming the new growth of spring.

When I was on the healing bed, one clear message I received was that I need to spend more time in nature, and to allow its healing energy to transform mine. I also got this message in January, when I created my dream board for the upcoming year. “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson It is for this reason that this year, I chose to connect with the divine in nature to celebrate Easter. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, and Mother Earth had shed her shawl of winter’s frost. I live near the Graue Mill which links to a nearby forest preserve. I very consciously did not walk my usual hurried pace. Unusual as it was, runners, dog-walkers, families with strollers, and curious kids all flew past me. My steps were measured and deliberate as I tread upon earth’s altar. I reached a nearby waterfall and stopped to meditate. The rush of the water was soothing and supportive. As I closed my eyes I felt all of the anxieties and angst of day-to-day life melt away. I called in my divine support team, especially honoring Christ on this day in which we celebrate His resurrection. I imagined golden healing light engulfing myself and those I love. I then extended the energetic intention to Chicago, and to the world. Then I sat in the solitude.

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Chart Readings

by Kaye Berjot Throughout our Astrology Basics 101 series you have learned about many of the important ingredients that go along with interpreting a chart. These components have included the Ascendant, Moon, and Sun signs, Transits, Houses, and Aspects, how to identify wealth and love within our individual charts, and Elements and Nodes. In this article, I would like to focus on chart readings, and what you can expect when receiving an astrology reading. There are many different types of astrologers. Most astrologers will have a modality on which they are more heavily focused. This means that they gravitate towards one or more types of astrology principles when interpreting charts. As an astrologer, I am more inclined to connect with alignments that are transformational, and I tend to take a closer look at pain points within our charts. With that said, there are astrologers that focus on karma, love, prosperity, mundane (daily) astrology, and countless numbers of other astrological trends, in order to provide guidance to their audience. I am of the opinion that all forms of astrology have some beneficial impact, because they provide opportunities for us as seekers of self-awareness, to gain insight from many different vantage points. In order to prepare for a chart reading, you should have your birth date, time, and place. If you are unable to obtain this information, astrologers have various techniques that allow them to gain additional perspective in order to produce an as close as possible chart representation. Most Western astrologers begin readings by first interpreting the natal chart. This chart is the snapshot of the planetary alignments that are present at our time of birth. Astrologers use natal charts to gain insight into your basic foundations and life principles. They are designed to provide the astrologer with a “big picture” overview of you. This “big picture” overview will provide generalized information that will become more focused as the reading continues. When you have general questions such as: who am I, what am I doing, what is my life’s purpose, a natal chart provides the astrologer with a solid foundation to begin answering those questions. Natal charts with transits are like before and after snapshots. This type of chart shows where you are at the time of birth, and where you are now. Because planets are constantly in motion, the 10 Conscious Community - May 2015

“after” snapshot can change from day to day. These are what we call transits. When you have questions like why did this happen, what was taking place, or what is taking place now, a natal chart with transits is beneficial. The transits can provide insight into stress points, opportunities for learning and advancement, global trends, and many other areas that could impact the outcome of a situation. An astrologer might do a solar return chart if you have questions like what is the next year going to look like, or how will this year be different from last year? Astrologers utilize solar return charts during readings to help you gain insight concerning trends from one birthday to another. These charts can be read like natal charts. The primary difference is that the solar return chart is the snapshot for a year, whereas the natal chart is a snapshot over the course of your lifetime. There are times in our lives when events occur and there seems to be no logical rhyme or reason. In circumstances like these, I like to use a progressed chart. To me, progressed charts are like tectonic plates that shift on the ocean’s floor, because there are unseen changes that can create enormous waves of opportunity. Progressed charts help us to see when those opportunities are likely to present themselves. Progressed charts can be beneficial when we are experiencing significant life changes. These changes often lead us to paths that help expose our hidden or latent talents. Relationships can be profound change agents and we frequently ask ourselves questions like: “Is this the right relationship for me?”, or “What is the purpose of this relationship?”, when we are trying to gain clarity. To address these types of questions astrologers use partnership charts. Partner charts require data for two individuals; therefore it is important to know the birth date, time, and location for both individuals. Synastry, Composite, and Davison charts are the most commonly used partner or relationship charts. When seeking guidance from an astrologer, it is important to understand the type of astrology that is being utilized in addition to the types of questions that you would like guidance on. This is especially important when dealing with time limitations and other various constraints. Regardless of type, astrology charts are first and foremost tools that we astrologers use to provide guidance, and it is our hope that that guidance will ultimately move you towards the positive objectives that you seek.

Mindfulness Straight From the Horse’s Mouth by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT Mindfulness is the ability to remain present in life, keeping attention on what is happening from moment to moment. When we live in a mindful way, we are no longer preoccupied or burdened with what happened in the past, and are not preoccupied with the future. Living this way allows us to react to the unexpected in a clear-headed way even in the rush of fear. Mindfulness means that we are operating with our three sensory bodies: our head, our heart, and our gut instinct. We are in our bodies and out of our head, experiencing life in a more fully embodied way. This all sounds like an amazing way to live, yet with our modern lifestyle and hectic lives it can be quite a challenge to stay mindful every moment. There are practical examples of how to live mindfully, and rather than having me try to tell you how, take it straight from the horse’s mouth. John Kabat-Zinn identifies the key components to mindfulness as: attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and sense of self. We can learn each of those components from the horse and begin to live mindfully. As a sensitive prey animal, they operate out of instinct, they don’t hold a grudge, they don’t judge, and they live on purpose, moving from moment to moment, only responding to what needs responding to. They take time to relax, to play, connect with each other, and let off steam. They still experience stress and even argue, yet they have the ability to let it go and find balance. They keep their mind on what’s in front of them, which has allowed them to react at the speed of light and stay alive. Horses are guided by their instinct and their intuition. They live in their bodies and rely on feel to let them know if there is something to be afraid of, or of the need to run. They are in tune to their senses that give them information about the world around them. If you look at a herd, there are horses on the fringe often referred to as sentinels. If one of them notices something, they seem to send a signal or wave of energy through the herd. Before the one who noticed the danger has his head fully up the others are alerted. This signal for awareness is felt in the body; a rush of adrenaline, giving them the ability to react. Their bodies are like an antenna that receives information that is first felt then analyzed. It is a level of mindfulness that has allowed them to survive. It is a different level of attention that is sensed rather than intellectually attained. Horses speak a language that instead of being made up of words and writing is about using their senses to read body language; listening to vocalizations, smelling the air around them, and feeling the energy around them. They have an amazing level of body awareness, which is one of the reasons they are so good at reading humans. They are able to cut though the falsities of 12 Conscious Community - May 2015

language, and read what our body language communicates to them. When our outside doesn’t match what we are feeling on the inside, they read that as a reason not to trust. It is deceptive. As humans we notice those incongruencies in our daily interactions. Sometimes we do not pay attention to those signals that tell us something isn’t right, and it can get us into trouble. For a horse, they choose to disengage by walking away, or giving the human a clear signal by presenting their hind end, meant as a warning. Between horses it takes only a head bob or turn of the hind end to send a message to one another. The horse on the receiving end can either comply with the request, or ask a question with their body. If there is a disagreement, it is over in seconds, and everything returns to normal. Humans can relive the argument over and over as we repeat the play-by-play to our friends and family. This reinforces and even increases stress above and beyond the original event. We hold on to our emotions. Horses don’t hold grudges, they let it go and move on. Imagine a situation where a wild herd is pursued by a predator. They run in a panic to get away from the threat. Their adrenaline is pumping and their heart is racing. In a matter of moments, it’s all over. Then the herd goes back to normal. They return their attention to the present, and let go of the incident. They are always aware, yet not living in a constant state of stress. Horses, especially those living in partnership with humans, do experience stress. However, if you watch them, they literally shake it off. They have this wisdom or knowing that what they feel is energy, and it can be moved through the body by moving. Some horses will shake their head, while others will engage in play to burn off the excess. When they have moved it all through, they again return to grazing or work. This ability to self-regulate and simply live from moment to moment is their greatest asset, and their greatest gift to us in the pursuit of a more mindful life. Imagine how much richer our lives would be if we paid attention to what our gut told us, let go of emotion instead of holding onto it, resolved our arguments in minutes, and had the ability to go from a ten on the energy scale and within minutes bring it back down to a two. So take it straight from the horse’s mouth, and live in the moment. You might survive a bit longer. Blair McKissock, MsEd, RYT, is an author and speaker on the subject of nature-based learning. She is an experiential geek, a yoga addict, PhD student, unconventional mom and lover of the outdoors. Find out about upcoming trainings by visiting stridestosuccess.org.

From the Heart

Remember What’s Important by Alan Cohen I attended a concert by The Brothers Cazimero, two talented and well-loved Hawaiian musicians. Early in the evening one of the brothers, Roland, fell ill and had to leave the stage. Suddenly his brother Robert found himself on stage in front of a thousand people without his partner, unable to perform the two-hour repertoire they had rehearsed. He had to wing it. The audience was quite disappointed. Here we had paid for tickets and come out for this big event, and it wasn’t going to happen. We wanted Robert and Roland, not just Robert. Instead of complaining, however, the audience mounted massive support for both brothers. People called out, “We love you, Roland!” as he left the stage. We applauded wildly for Robert as he tried to patch together a concert. He made some chord errors, and one of the male hula dancers in his ensemble had his costume nearly fall off on stage while the troupe improvised a dance. None of that mattered. We all understood this was an emergency situation, and everyone pulled together to make the best of it. By the end of the evening the musical presentation was not at all what we had expected, yet the concert hall was filled with celebration. After the finale, Robert received a standing ovation. Many in the audience inwardly held Roland in prayer. Higher Mind reframed an awkward situation as a call for love, and transformed the event. As a result, the evening was far more rewarding than if we had simply heard the concert as planned. A Course in Miracles tells us that the world we see is inside out and upside down. We value the trivial, and overlook the monumental. We are enamored with things, and ignore people. We worship at the altar of limitation, and forsake our potential. We live disconnected from the worthwhile, and then wonder why we are in pain. Dee and I recently had to reorder checks from our bank. We were amazed to see all the different motifs and mottos we could have imprinted on our checks. Finally we chose one that spoke to us: “Remember what’s important.” Now every time we sign a check we are reminded to value love more than money, and see money as an expression of love. Jewish Theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.” Contemporary education fills our minds with facts, but leaves our hearts empty. Children are taught how to follow, not how to lead. When kids have to walk through metal detectors to get into elementary school, one must question what kind of education goes on behind those walls. A college degree does not mean you know who you are, or what you are here to do. A professor at one of the most prestigious universities in the world told me that faculty members are fighting with each other 14 Conscious Community - May 2015

constantly. One has to wonder how intelligent these people really are. They have amassed extraordinary technical expertise, but they have not learned how to get along. Are they truly successful? I saw a documentary about a man who was killed in a crazed gunman’s spree on the Long Island Railroad. His wife tearfully reported, “When I said goodbye to him that morning, I thought for sure I would see him that evening—but I didn’t.” We all expect that we will see our beloved family and friends again. Most of the time we will. Sometimes we won’t. How much more meaningful would our moments with loved ones be if we treated them as if this might be our last time together? We would not squabble over petty issues. We would remember what’s important. Author and psychologist Diane Cirincione said that she used to get irritated when her husband Jerry Jampolsky would make toast in the kitchen each morning, and then leave crumbs on the counter. Diane asked him to please be more conscious about cleanup, yet the next morning she would walk into the kitchen, and find crumbs again. “Then one morning I had a stunning thought,” Diane said. “The only thing worse than finding crumbs would be to not find crumbs because Jerry wasn’t there. From that time on the crumbs didn’t bother me. They were unimportant in the light of the love we share.” The purpose of our journey through life, including all of our experiences and relationships, is to remember what’s important. As children we knew what was important. We had light hearts; laughed often, expressed ourselves honestly, and gravitated to people we loved. Then we were trained in what was important, and our lights began to dim. At some point we begin to recognize that what we are told is important, isn’t, and what we know is important, is. You can tell what you believe is important by what you are doing, and what you are getting. We are always choosing between one thing and another, and getting more of what we focus on. We can focus on the love, or the crumbs. We can complain that our partner came home late, or celebrate that they came home at all. Every moment is precious. The Shared Heart

N ew D i m e n s i o n s o f R e l a t i o n s h i p by Joyce and Barry Vissell

Trust Comes First I have been on crutches for the last three weeks. It hasn’t been much fun. It certainly hasn’t made my life easy. I had meniscus surgery on my right knee last June, and then probably reinjured it by doing too much too soon. The stress of trying to be my very active self these last months caused micro-fractures in the bones of the knee joint. So now my strict order is no weight bearing for a full month to actually let my knee heal. In a few more weeks I will get another MRI to gauge the healing, and see if I am ready to walk. I help my knee by not walking on it right now. I help by sending positive, healing energy to my knee. I help the most by trusting in God, a power and love greater than my body or mind. In this time on crutches, I find myself constantly facing the biggest choice life has to offer: do I depend upon my own will and strength, or do I depend on the highest source of power in the universe? When I sit and meditate, I realize this is a moment by moment decision. One moment I trust God, and put my whole life (and my knee) in greater hands than mine. That moment I sit in peace. The next moment I’m planning out my day or my life as if there is only me to depend upon. I’m no longer at peace. Then I remember to trust and let go. Peace again. What if my knee doesn’t heal and I still can’t walk? Agitation. There is a divine plan working for my highest good and happiness. Peace again. Trust. Not trust. Trust. Not trust. The human free will tries to insert its dominion. Trust in a higher power is the most difficult thing to sustain, and the most important thing to sustain. I can’t see angels, yet I trust they are there helping me every step of my journey. In our Shared Heart Summer Retreat at Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon, we start out the first morning with trust. Since we have everyone together for the first hour of the morning session, including children of all ages, we need to also make that hour lively and fun. The whole point is to encourage trust, and to challenge everyone to start with what is most important…trust. We say to the group, “None of us knows what will happen this week, but let’s trust that it will be good.” We include simple trust exercises like having each child or adult take turns standing in the center of a small group, close their eyes, and fall against the hands of their group, hands that will always catch them and keep them safe. Then we do a “trust walk,” where each person takes turns closing their eyes, and is led on an adventure by one partner 16 Conscious Community - May 2015

with eyes open. Closing eyes is a powerful way to learn to trust in both exercises. Too often, with your eyes open, you become too much in control. Closing your eyes gives you an opportunity to trust in something greater than your own little control. It’s surprising how many people can’t keep their eyes closed in these two exercises. Is it possible to trust what you cannot see? Joyce and I believe so. You may ask, “What about love? Isn’t that more important than trust?” Without trusting in the Divine, love becomes something you do from your personal self. Love without trust is small love. After Joyce and I got married, since our religious difference had brought so much sadness and pain into our lives, we decided to throw it all out. We thought we could be happy with just our personal love for each other. How wrong we were. We didn’t just throw out religion; we also threw out spirituality, the foundation of religion. It was like we were drinking from a cup without refilling it. Without trust in a God greater than religion, our cup of love ran dry, and we found ourselves in real trouble. Thankfully, with lots of help from spiritual teachers, we found our way back to trust, which allowed us to refill our cup of love. Gratitude is a very powerful practice. But like love, gratitude without trust is “small” gratitude. It is saying thank you, without really meaning it. Without trusting that your every need is provided for, gratitude is hollow. When you trust the Divine Beingness, gratitude follows naturally and effortlessly. In those moments when I trust that my knee is being restored by the greatest healing energy in the universe, all I can do is give thanks. Trust requires childlike innocence. It’s a knowing that our Mother-Father God is taking care of our every need, every moment of our lives. True, this has not been the case with our earthly parents, where we may have felt misunderstood, neglected, abandoned, or even abused. Many of us, like me, have decided we can only depend upon ourselves; that we can never depend upon anyone else. Turning to complete self-reliance, however, completely ignores our dependence upon the Divine. Joyce and I are blessed to have our daughter, Rami, and her four-year-old son, Skye, living right on our property. We spend as much time with our grandson as possible. His innocence opens our hearts. His trust in us is a constant reminder for us to trust in God. When he’s hungry, he can simply announce it, and know there will always be food for him. He doesn’t have

to keep track of the snot hanging down from one of his nostrils. A tissue magically appears in front of his nose, and he hears the word “blow.” When I make up a story involving the simplest of props, his trust allows him to become completely immersed in the story. It can, and has, gone on for hours, or so it seems to me, the one who keeps track of the time. But for Skye, his childlike trust transcends time. He lives in the story, becomes the story, knowing I will take care of all his needs, and he can become lost in play. It won’t always be this way. Gradually he is learning selfresponsibility, and I pray that he also learns to trust God, so that self-responsibility becomes secondary to trust.

Emotions and Your Dental Health by Diane Meyer B.S.,D.D.S. Could your teeth be responsible for your ill health? As a Holistic Dentist, I believe the conditions present in a person’s mouth are a reflection of their overall health. In fact, this is in accordance with Chinese medicine where they too believe that the mouth is a reflection of the person’s overall health. Chinese physicians examine the person’s teeth, gums, tongue and oral cavity before they examine the rest of the person’s body. In Holistic dentistry, I focus on the unrecognized impact that dental toxins, dead teeth and hidden dental infections can have on a person’s overall health. Tooth decay, periodontal disease, restoration materials, root canals, misaligned teeth, and jawbone infection are all factors that may affect a person’s health. Focal Infection Theory states that a condition in one part of a body may be the cause of a health issue located in another part of the body. We see this when people are suffering from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, thyroid dysfunction, infertility, kidney dysfunction, breathing problems, cancer, digestive complications, joint pain and limited joint motion just to mention a few. This is not to say that the people became ill as a result of their mouth problem(s) but that it may be a contributing factor. So how do emotions fit into this picture? It has always astonished me how a person could exhibit tooth decay on only one tooth when they were free of dental caries just six months prior. Rather than the typical Dentist that would drill and fill, I would ask why? Could this decay have anything to do with an ongoing stressor in the individual’s personal life leading to an emotional block? Or could it be due to poor nutrition, a poor bite, unusual sleeping patterns, etc.? Thus, in addition to analyzing and addressing the person’s immediate problems, I seek to answer these questions first. Interestingly enough, more and more scientific literature is being released verifying that emotions do indeed impact our general health ; you have probably heard that stress will cause ulcers, headaches, heart disease, etc. However, it is just recently that I am now beginning to understand the connection between emotions and oral health. Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. Dawson Church and Dr. Gregg Braden detailed the ability to change our DNA through our thoughts; the more positive life-giving the thought, the more positive lifegiving the outcome . This would mean that with the power of our thoughts, which affect our emotions, we could, in theory, reverse tooth decay or abscessed teeth. Okay, you are probably saying WHAT!! Me too; I had those same thoughts. However, being open minded, I decided to read the research presented. The most fascinating research to date that I have seen is the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto. He gained worldwide attention through his groundbreaking research and discovery that water is deeply connected to our individual and collective consciousnes. This shows that your thoughts and feelings (i.e. emotions) can alter the state of water. Thus, if humans are 50 to 75% water at 18 Conscious Community - May 2015

any given time, emotions should also be able to alter the state of the water within themselves or those around them. Now, how do we understand the emotional component to teeth? Well, a great place to start is by first understanding the relationship between emotions and organs. This organ-emotion system is analogous to the circuitry in your house. The electric panel will supply energy to each part of your house along a particular path (i.e. circuit). Now, if a circuit breaks in your house, everything on that circuit goes out as well. This is similar to what happens when a tooth site is traumatized by decay, abscess, or gangrenous tissue. The energy meridian (i.e. circuit) associated with the tooth site is disrupted and this disruption travels along the breadth of the meridian affecting everything along the way including organs. Even if a tooth has been removed there still may be an infection in the bone (i.e. cavitation) at that location that could cause the same disruption. It is also important to note that there is an area located behind the wisdom teeth called the ninth space. These areas are evolutionary remnants which were occupied by teeth at some point in our history. Some individuals may develop primordial cysts (i.e. an undeveloped tooth) in these areas. These cysts can disrupt the energy meridians located in the 1, 16, 17, and 32 tooth site. Please feel free to use the interactive chart located at: holisticdentistillinois.com/for-patients/interactive-meridian-chart/ to learn more about each tooth’s relationship with the organ system. Just click on the tooth to see which teeth and organs are located on the same meridian. The next question to ask is how do we address these situations to reverse the process of dental disease? Although this process is multifaceted, here we are focusing solely on the emotional component. Therefore, if the above-mentioned research demonstrates that our emotions can affect our health, it is logical to presume that a positive affirmation is an acceptable starting point. In the book by Louise L. Hay You Can Heal Your Life, there is a process described for transmuting negative thoughts using positive affirmation. For abscessed teeth, the affirmation is “I allow my thoughts to be free. The past is over. I am at peace.” Of course, there are many more affirmations available for a number of different dental ailments and I suggest starting your search either on the Internet or in books to find the affirmation for your particular need. As a Holistic Dentist, Dr. Meyer has been extensively trained in the mouth and body connection. She believes nutrition is the key to health and follows a Mercury-safe protocol at her office. THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS May... Number Five...Taking Off Nature’s Spandex! by Elizabeth Summers As we move into the fifth month of our calendar year, all of Nature seems to be taking off its “spandex” and bursting into the joy of freedom. The Number Five exudes this very energy. To hold life loosely, to patiently allow life to unfold and to live in moderation are the key lessons of the energy of Number Five. Mother Nature, as she slowly unfolds her beauty is teaching this to all of us…”don’t rush things…I have it all handled! All of life has its seasons so just be patient as I do my work!” A person’s birthday Number, meaning the actual day one chose to be born, is a huge indicator of one’s temperament and personality. Perhaps many reading this article are too young to have experienced the erratic energy of the toy called a “Mexican Jumping Bean”. This fun capsule jumps around in the warm palm of one’s hand in response to the “heat of the moment”. Never staying in one position too long, this capsule- shaped toy impulsively moves in all directions. Those born on the fifth, fourteenth, or twenty-third of any month enjoy this same quick, resourceful and versatile reputation. Unique, unconventional and a seeker of the latest and greatest, Number Five individuals could easily wander off to faraway lands both mentally and physically, just to answer the philosophical quandaries of life. Not one to take advice from others, this “jump off a cliff without a bungee cord” temperament would do well to learn its lessons in life through observation of others so going through dramas in life become unnecessary. Life is never dull for those that are the companions of the Number Five. The marriage mate of a Five needs to understand their mate’s need for an unrestricted lifestyle and the dislike for handling responsibility. The Number Five has difficulty committing to anything because it basically does not trust itself. The subconscious knows that its motto is “don’t fence me in” and the structures of a married life seem like a big “fence”. Paradoxically, the very thing the Number Five needs is structure. It isn’t uncommon to see a young Number Five enlist in the military or marry early or even have children that require them to stay focused and settle down within a framework. Number Five people are verbal and mentally high-strung, choosing to live on their nerves and create adventures that satisfy their craving for excitement. A good metaphor for Number Five energy is a NASCAR vehicle racing full speed around the track on Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis speed way. Patience in thought, word and deed is not Number Five’s strong point! This is not to say that Number Five would be a “couch potato”. As long as the experience has excitement, challenges or adventure, patient perseverance will be exercised 20 Conscious Community - May 2015

to accomplish the deed. With a genuine dislike for hard manual labor, occupations that utilize quick paced and mental dexterity suit these characters just fine. The five energies of the senses vibrate to the Number Five personality. Therefore, sports, exercise and sex play a big part in their lives. This spirited experimenter and thrill seeker must be on guard against over-indulgence in drugs, sexual escapades and gambling of all types. Gambling plays to their love of risk-taking. When the Number Five appears in a chart for a transit reading it always means major changes abound. Changes in location, lifestyle, career, even partners must be taken into consideration. Some modifications in lifestyle can be experienced involuntarily, presenting uncertainty as to what to do next! Represented by the Hierophant card in Tarot, the inner teacher will guide the Number Five, if it will only listen and follow through. Mercury the planet of communication rules over this rather loquacious energy. Talking, selling, teaching, traveling, exploring and bubbling over with excitement allows everyone and everything to remain totally energized. This mercurial Number Five, with its disdain for the monotonous, thrives under stress and in crisis conditions. It adapts to sudden changes while remaining centered in the moment. The lucky days for this “jumping bean” energy certainly can be on Wednesdays and Fridays when they should decide to make their next leaps! Staying in the NOW, doing the work in front of them and trusting that they will have what they need when they need it is a major lesson for all souls regardless of temperament. The Number Five needs to work choosing patience with its life to learn this very issue. Perhaps Denis Waitley put it best “life is a movie you see through your own eyes. It makes little difference what’s happening out there. It’s how you take it that counts.” Spiritually guiding clients since 1988, Elizabeth Summers provides practical information by combining Numerology, Astrology and Tarot interpretations in her personal readings Website: www.themagicalworldofnumbers.com For a private Numerology reading with Elizabeth Summers, please go here to review your choices: www.themagicalworldofnumbers.com/readings.html

Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern

Mindful Meditation Music and AMONG FRIENDS: 1975-2015 If you’ve been tuned in to my music for a while, you know that most of my recordings are composed in a meditative state, with the intention of creating beautiful, relaxing soundscapes that support meditation and mindful awareness. There are a number of specific techniques I employ, in terms of tone, time and Silence, which I’ve written about in my newsletters, and in articles in magazines like Yoga Journal, Common Ground, and Spirituality and Health. When I first started channeling this kind of music, I needed to invent a new “sonic vocabulary” to describe to reviewers and customers how the purpose and effect of my albums was different from most other albums. Over the years, I’ve developed many phrases, some of which you may recognize. Many of these came during meditation, just as the music does. “The Anti-Frantic Alternative” ™, for instance, communicated more effectively than the term I had to use for my Master’s dissertation: “Positive Affect Meditation Music.” Only a few reviewers knew what I meant by “Neo-Impressionist Zen Piano.” Focus groups helped simplify the challenge, describing the effects of the music as “creating feelings of inner peace.” The lack of a strong rhythmic core empowered listeners’ heartbeats to naturally slow down and de-stress. The lack of a strong melodic focus, which I christened as the “Scalus Interruptus” phenomenon since 1975 has gone viral. The combination of these and other factors make it easy to be in the moment, rather than always anticipating the future, as happens with traditional Western European music. My music is music of being, rather than doing. In other words, listening to this music is an easy way to effortlessly shift into a peaceful state of mindful awareness. Mindfulness is a concept that more and more people, from all walks of life, understand.

22 Conscious Community - May 2015

Alas, I’m already seeing and hearing many non-meditative albums proclaiming to be “mindful music.” I guess that was to be expected. How can you tell the difference? You can feel it! True mindful meditation music does not engage your left brain’s analytical response modes. It allows you to connect with the Power of Now, as Eckhart Tolle has described. Mindful meditation music takes you into the space between the tones...into the gap between thoughts, as Deepak Chopra eloquently describes. As I look back on 40 years of articles, liner notes, and newsletters, I’ve been championing this orientation throughout my career, from my first album, Chakra Suite, to my latest brainwave entrainment series, including Deep Alpha 2.0, and Deep Theta 2.0.

Among Friends: 1975-2015 : A 40 Year Retrospective For me, the recording studio has always been my virtual Temple of Sound. In most of my sessions, I’m alone in the studio, with my recording engineer in the adjacent control room, with all the equipment. This allows me to totally immerse myself in the moment, and become one with the music that flows through me. Throughout my career, however, I’ve been blessed to share sacred sonic moments with a number of incredible musicians, many of whom are lifelong friends. As a producer as well as composer/keyboardist, my role is to create a vibrationally uplifting environment that has often resulted in music that is truly more than the sum of its parts. On my new album, Among Friends, I have collected my favorite selections from 40 years of recording. Many have never before been available on CD or digital download. Many others will be new to you, because they were part of my World Fusion and more rhythmic series. I collectively refer to them as my Sound Medicine Band.

This album highlights a level of co-creative chemistry and musical telepathy that I am honored to share with you. The albums include Connections, Relaxation Suite, Deep Alpha, Paradigm Shift, DejaBlues and Afro-Desia. I could go into a detailed backstory about every track on this album, yet I’ll save that for several YouTube videos I’ve been working on. These will include Master Class insights for musicians, as well as anyone who wants to get deeper into the magic of improvisation and connection to Spirit. For instance, there is a particular moment on the track “Shared Secrets” where there was a visceral energy shift. Can you feel it? Paul Horn and I both recognized it. Our eyes connected, and our relationship moved to a higher octave in that instant. Listen to the magnificent melodies that Paul Horn, Paul McCandless, Jai Uttal, and Michael Manring play. I believe these represent some of the most extraordinary music they have ever recorded. After our sessions, I’d spend many hours editing and fine-tuning to make their performances even more amazing, and without them, these songs would never have been possible. Other featured musicians include David Darling, Georgia Kelly, Schawkie Roth, Dallas Smith, and Jorge Alfano. I am so grateful to all of them for sharing their gifts with me and with the world. You can listen to generous samples on my website: StevenHalpern.com/AmongFriends. Due to the new rules of the music industry, only sales through Amazon, iTunes, and other Nielsen SoundScan reporting vendors count towards charting on Billboard, so I encourage you to purchase from either of these sites. I hope you’ll consider adding this career-defining portrait to your personal sound library. Yours for sound-assisted mindfulness, Steven Halpern Steven Halpern is a Grammy® award nominated recording artist, composer, producer, author, and researcher.

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery

June’s Afterlife Conference: Easing Grief with Hope My original intent for my May column was to write the promised follow-up to my April column, “Kindness is My Religion.” That follow-up was going to explore the impact of the 1968 poem, “The Paradoxical Commandments” written by Kent M. Keith. Then early on Easter Monday, I read the anguished Facebook Posts from members of Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org). This anguish reminded me that many who are grieving because of the loss of a loved one will be gathering to find some solace and relief at the Fifth Annual Afterlife Conference (afterlifeconference.com) on June 4-7, 2015 in Norfolk, Virginia. The post that immediately gained my attention was from a mother who had lost her son, Ricky. She wrote this on Easter Sunday at 10:35 p.m. CT: Do you think I care that today was Easter? NOPE it was just another day without my son. I don’t care what anyone says, Every day for the rest of my life will never be the same. I saw my son take his last breath and guess what? I couldn’t save him. This is what I have to face every day when I wake up. It has been 4 years, 7 months & 15 days since that dreadful day that changed my life forever.....08-21-10. I miss my son Ricky every minute of every day. Yeah I’m mad and sad. And yeah I know tomorrow is a new day but the pain is forever, the loss is forever, the emptiness I feel is forever. My son is not with me and that’s not how it should have been. I’ll never ever understand WHY!!!!!! Why my son? I love you Ricky - FOREVER YOUNG. Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org) is a worldwide organization that provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or daughter, a brother or sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. Resources offered on their website include You Are Not Alone, a guide for the newly bereaved, monthly local chapter meetings, a Memorial Book where you can list a child’s name, and Crisis Hotline information. Compassionate Friends also has a very active online community. That Easter Sunday Facebook Page, for example, was peppered with cries of anguish similar to Ricky’s mom:

24 Conscious Community - May 2015

Today was a very tough day. Everyday gets harder and harder especially holidays. I finally allowed myself to cry this Easter weekend. I miss my son so much. Easter is so hard to get through. Our first Easter without my precious forever 25 baby girl… I will never be the same, I am breaking apart on the inside… I need help… Indeed, each of these posts is a cry for help. As I read them, I thought back to June 2014, and all the grieving parents, spouses, and friends that I met at the Fourth Annual Afterlife Conference in Portland, Oregon. These folks had come from around the world to experience the answers that mediums and After Death Communication workshops can provide. The effect that these discoveries had was often very moving and deep. I saw this with my own eyes and reported on it in my July 2014 CyberWeave column. One particularly poignant reading was given during a GalleryStyle session by Hollister Rand (hollisterrand.com), a clairvoyant and clairsentient medium who specializes in communication with children in spirit. It was a powerful moment. Hollister told a woman that her deceased father had her aborted child with him. The woman was clearly moved, struggling to hold back her tears. “Thank you,” she said. “I worried about that.” “What your son is letting you know,” said Hollister, “is this was not the time for you to have a child. When you were pregnant with him it was not the time; it wasn’t the place, and you weren’t with someone who could support you in that experience…” The woman nodded. She stated that she had invited her aborted child to come to her. “I gave permissions for him to come here, even in front of people. That it was OK, that if he had something to say to me, please say it,” she said. There were so many grieving parents in that audience, few readings could be done in that hour and a half time slot. However, Hollister made sure these parents knew that just because their loved ones hadn’t come to them, it didn’t mean that those loved ones weren’t with them. Because of this, Hollister interlaced her readings with tools they could use in order to directly

communicate with their spirit loved ones. The appendix of her book, I’m Not Dead, I’m Different, contains many tips about spirit communication. These include calling in Divine Love, shifting the energy through music, and watching for signs.

the website I also found Discovering your Soul Senses with John Holland, Visiting the Afterlife with William Buhlman.) Also new this year is the first annual Afterlife Awareness Award, which will honor noted leaders in afterlife communication. This first award will be presented to Dr. Raymond Moody for his unmatched and unprecedented work as a pioneer in the study of near-death experience.

I’m bringing all this up now for two reasons. First of all, I was struck by the hopeless depth of the grief expressed by some of the Compassionate Friends posts, grief that can be eased, although not eradicated, by the study and practice of After Death Communication. Second, the upcoming Afterlife Conference is one of the places where grief can be tempered by hope. A good way to find out what the 2015 conference will be like is to visit the website (afterlifeconference.com) and explore the 2014 Conference. Click on the Past Conferences tab and check out the photos and highlights from 2014. Also check out the some of the comments including: “What is difficult for me to describe is what really sets this event apart from any other I have attended – the people and the energy they created. Participants from very different walks of life – bereaved parents and mediums, hospice workers and researchers, chaplains, authors and scholars – all mingling seamlessly, bound by a definitely detectable, almost physical vibration, for which I only know one name: love.” Piero Parisetti, MD, grief counselor and afterlife researcher “I came home with new eyes, and haven’t been able to look people in the eye for a year, ever since my fiancé died. A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped organize this stellar event.” Sarah Treanor

I can vouch for these comments since I attended that 2014 Conference. The event was a wonderful mix: the warmth of the presenters and attendees combined with in-depth information that focused on spirituality, bereavement, and scientific investigation.

This year’s Afterlife Conference will feature expanded training in psychic development and after-death communication, as well as teachings on out-of-body exploration, conscious dying, and conscious grieving. The goal is to blur the boundaries between allopathic medicine and alternative healing; between intuitive experience and scientific research; and between religious traditions and a spirituality of oneness, to increase awareness of life beyond the physical body. This will be done through workshops including two pre-conference events: Developing your Soul Senses with John Holland, Out of Body Journeying with William Buhlman. (Editor’s Note: looking at two parts of

Jeffrey Marks, an evidential medium and author of The Afterlife Interviews, will present his research. Marks analyzed a series of questions recorded in his mediumship sessions, which produced consistent answers from those in spirit about life on the Other Side. Karen Wyatt, MD’s session will present her work, which is devoted to integrating spirituality and the practice of traditional medicine, with a specific focus on death and dying. Her books include A Matter of Life and Death: Stories to Heal Loss & Grief. Peter Woodbury’s presentation will address Trauma, Loss and The Deeper Understanding of Karma. He trained in hypnotherapy and past-life regression with Dr. Brian Weiss, and is a teacher of the Edgar Cayce readings.

“The moment I stepped into the conference, I felt at home. When you gather such heart-centered, open-minded people together, as this conference so beautifully does, the result is simple: Love. This conference is worth experiencing, from beginning to end; each and every moment is sacred.” Steffany Barton, RN

The 2015 Conference promises to be just as good, perhaps even better. Here are some highlights:

The extensive list of presenters includes Dr. Eben Alexander and Anita Moorjani, who experienced two of the most profound near-death experiences I’ve ever explored. You may have read their books, Proof of Heaven, and Dying to be Me. Other presentations include audience readings with Suzane Northrop and Hollister Rand; a Skype interview with Annie Kagan, author of The Afterlife of Billy Fingers; and shamanic ceremonies with Linda Fitch and Jan Engels-Smith. The session descriptions are intriguing. Here are just a handful of them:

Dr. Erica Hyatt’s presentation will focus on children’s perceptions of death and the world beyond. She has done extensive research on adolescent sibling bereavement, pediatric end of life decision-making, and the intersection of spirituality and psychology. There is even something very special for those folks who can stay around for a little while after the conference ends. On Sunday, June 7th, attendees will get a chance to visit Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.). The tour will feature the campus and library, a Japanese meditation garden, a stone labyrinth, and a reflexology walk. Whether you are grieving, have an interest in the subject of the afterlife, or both, you should check out this conference and think about going. My Advice: The Afterlife Conference is a crucible for healing and communication, both with the beyond and in this world. It is a place where shamans break bread with scientists, and where mystics, medics, scholars, and spiritualists gather to share their wisdom and create common ground. It is also a place where the bereaved can find solace with each other, and with their departed

loved ones. It is a conference that I truly desire to attend. I don’t know yet if my schedule will allow that. But if it does—and you go too: Be sure to give me a holler and say hi!

As the sound of the gong creates deep relaxation and clears the mind, it also aids in reorganization of emotional energy. Gong meditations participants typically lie face up on a yoga mat or blanket in resting pose (Shivasana) or sit in a chair to experience the tremendous healing sounds and vibrations. Thoughts About Sacred Geometry

By An Artist Who Makes Them

by Endre Balogh

Our natural world is filled with a myriad of geometric designs. We can see examples of this in the simplest of flowers and shells, as well as in the geometry comprising the tiniest atoms, or farthest galaxies. These patterns repeat in endless permutations everywhere, yet how do they arise? Are they simply the result of the laws of physics manifesting randomly? If so, that begs the question: where do the laws of physics come from? We know that the elemental forces of gravity and electromagnetism could not have existed prior to the Big Bang, so they, along with all physical matter, had to have been created in the same instant. Consequently, many see in these structures the guiding hand of a Divine Presence. As Rabbi Mordecai Finley (one of the preeminent Rabbis of our time) is fond of saying, “it is only through Love, Justice, Truth, and Beauty that we can apprehend the presence of God or the Divine Source (call it what you will) in our physical world.” We know from history that as soon as primitive peoples noticed and began to appreciate the structures underlying the design of our universe, they became aware of the presence of the Divine. Pythagoras was among the first to note the fascinating and intricate relationship between the physical world and mathematical symmetry, and subsequent scientists from Newton through Einstein have opined on the obvious interrelationship between naturally occurring geometry and a Divinely inspired order. Sadly, our 21st century age of secular materialism seems to have lost touch with the awe-inspiring mathematical and geometrical imprint of the Divine Source that manifests throughout all of creation. That loss has also made it difficult, if not impossible, for people in our society to be willing to declare something “beautiful.” Our souls, though, are able to recognize beauty easily since (whether we consciously realize it or not) they remain in close touch with that Divine Source. Throughout the ages, it has been the study of Sacred Geometry that has represented an inquiry into the blueprint of creation itself and has developed into a mystical science. It seeks to explore and explain what creates and unifies all things by revealing the energetic patterns along which creation is organized. 40 Conscious Community - May 2015

Since matters of Divine creation and organization are best expressed in terms that many think of as “mystical,” or “occult,” Sacred Geometries speak to us as symbols or archetypes that can only be fully comprehended at a profound level of the soul. Ancient mystical societies recognized that to meditate on Sacred Geometries was a powerful method for linking the human consciousness to the Divine Soul. Starting with the simplest forms: the circle, triangle, and square, and ultimately evolving into a multitude of symbolic geometric patterns, mystics have created complex patterns, which represent the inner realms, and point toward profound levels of self-awareness. It is these patterns that I use in my artwork; acknowledged spiritual motifs such as the Star of David, the All-Seeing Eye of God, The Seed of Life, the Flower of Life, Sri Yantra, Merkaba, and the YHVH or Hebrew Tetragrammaton, as well as many other combinations of shapes that I intuitively interrelate; all combine to become a finished artwork. Each is made entirely in Photoshop, combining both photographic and digital elements.

world from some pre-existing place in another realm. To bolster that notion, several people who have meditated with them have reported that in their deepest experiences they encounter inner vistas that are mirrored by these artworks. In a very real sense, then, they appear to be portals into archetypal aspects of the soul and its connection to a Divine Order. Whether you come from a mystical, spiritual point of reference, or are more inclined to the secular, I hope you will agree that these complex geometric patterns lend themselves to singularly beautiful art. I have always been fascinated by the interface between the mundane and the spiritual, so for me, making these Sacred Geometries is a perfect way to explore that fascinating boundary. It is my hope that they will bring you great joy and peace at whatever level you choose to interact with them. Endre Balogh is a world renowned concert violinist, photographer, and graphic artist. Check out his website at: EndresArt.com, and his Facebook page Sacred Geometry by Endre. When I begin to make one of these Sacred Geometries, I never know how it will unfold. Sometimes, one will seem to flow through me in a mere 15 minutes, while others may take several days of work to complete. The process constantly surprises me because rarely does the finished work even vaguely resemble the basic elements I started out with. You can watch two timelapse videos of how I make Sacred Geometries on YouTube (Sacred Geometry 381), at youtube.com/ watch?v=a7kEClU8tf8&feature=youtu.be and (Sacred Geometry 382), at youtube.com/ watch?v=qfCy2lMBw9Y&feature=youtu.be.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Nelson Mandela

In the Jewish prayer book there is a wonderful line, which reads, “I form the light and create darkness.” This clearly means to tell us that the essential nature of God is light, and that in order to create our physical existence, He had to first create darkness to contrast His already existing light. That is one of the reasons I always try to incorporate a representation of light, movement, and expansion into all of my Sacred Geometries. I also often include stars into their patterns; points of brilliant light that help to focus the eyes, mind, and heart. My sense is that I don’t actually make these Sacred Geometries at all, but rather, that I somehow “channel” them into our physical Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 41

COSMIC News: Day-by-day

May 2015, in Central Time

May 2015 Overview Mercury retrograde is a highlight this month. The Messenger of the Gods starts into Gemini on the 1st, turning backwards on the 19th, and remaining in its own sign into July. There will be plenty of interesting things to talk about, with sub-currents— never a dull moment. Other planetary sign changes include Venus into sensitive, family-oriented Cancer on the 7th and Mars into Gemini on the 12th, increasing the chatter and busyness. The Sun begins its annual passage through Gemini on the 21st, adding more pieces to the puzzle and balls to juggle.

Full Moon in Scorpio—May 3 New Moon in Taurus—May 17 Friday, May 1

May Day begins the merry month of May, one of the four Celtic holy days half way between the Equinoxes and Solstices. Some folks still dance around colorful celebratory May Poles. Some such meaningful ritual or activity is a good way to channel the power available today. The Moon in Libra interfaces with the still-operative Uranus-Pluto Square through the p.m. hours. Interpersonal dynamics are potent. Some serious, life-changing discussions take place and decisions are made, possibly reviewed by the end of the month. Sometimes we make life-altering decisions without even knowing until later that we have done so. Maintain your vigilance as well as your integrity while listening carefully to what other people are say. The best outcome is winwin collaboration.

Saturday, May 2

The Moon is Void of Course as of 9:03am, leaving an aura of harmony in the air. We’re generally feeling pretty good about what is going on, and people are generally getting along, like in the 1960s song: “Come on people, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now.” Find something special and different to do, or just go out and follow a spontaneous trail. Be open-minded. Who knows what you will discover? The Moon enters Scorpio at 8:47pm, for a deeply engaging evening lit up by the almost full Moon.

Sunday, May 3 FULL MOON, 10:42pm CDT, 13 Taurus-SCORPIO 23

Known as the Buddha Full Moon, Buddha is traditionally considered to have been born, enlightened and to have died on the Full Moon in May. This Taurus Sun/Scorpio Full Moon stretches our awareness between tangible experience and inner depths. If you don’t like what is going on in your life, rearrange your subatomic, subconscious psychology. Set your sights as soon as you wake up. We need clear direction and clear minds to avoid distractions and feeling overwhelmed by the strong feelings that can’t help but be expressed today. Though Scorpio doesn’t show all its cards, there is some big drama going on under the light of this Moon. Motivations are exposed. Political leaders may rise or fall. Headlines grab attention, reporting major announcements, shake-ups and changes. On a personal note, show up as who you really are, whatever you are doing. Lead with your heart and speak your truth in well-chosen words. If you are in love, declare it. This can be a wonderful night for lovers.

Monday, May 4

Dicey dynamics of the Full Moon play out through the day. Ride the strong waves with courage and heart. You will come out with honor if you play fair. It’s not all about winning. The Moon goes Void of Course at 8:49pm, leaving some tension in the air, and a feeling that “it’s not over yet.”

Tuesday, May 5

The Moon shifts into Sagittarius early in the morning, at 6:13am. Prepare yourself to do whatever needs to get done. Set your goals and take responsibility for what you believe is right. That doesn’t mean you need to be righteous. Others have a right to their opinions and may be worth listening to. Don’t get sidetracked for no good reason. You don’t want to waste time today, but you don’t need to be obsessive and driven, either.

Wednesday, May 6

A dreaming night may have lingering effects into the day, stimulating creativity and inspiration, though some people may feel a bit hung over. The fiery forces of self-confidence and motivation are high if you are clear-headed. Take advantage and move forward in your life. Carpe diem=seize the day.

Thursday, May 7

A Void of Course Moon at 12:51pm offers a short break to prepare for the afternoon. The Moon enters work-oriented Capricorn at 1:16pm. We may not feel like putting our noses to the grindstone, wanting to be elsewhere. Why isn’t it Friday, already! Who votes for 4-day workweeks? Take a refreshing break, go somewhere different for lunch, have an stimulating conversation and get yourself on track. It may just be that you are a bit bored or need a change of scenery—or maybe you’re being prescient. There is a change of mood on the way, when Venus moves into reflective, subjective Cancer at 5:52pm, suggesting a quiet night with the persons or pets you care about most. A good meal beckons, including your favorite comfort foods.

Friday, May 8

Focus, stay on track and move things along. This is one of those “no fooling around” days. The Moon meets up with Pluto and squares off with Uranus, two heavy hitter planets with serious impact. But we don’t need to take things too seriously. A bout of whimsy may be quite useful to let go of control and open up the imagination. Life is not a bowl of cherries (unless they are organic), and “I never promised you a rose garden,” but they grow all over the globe. Where are the Garden of Eden and Shangri-La? How can we humans living on Earth come closer to our true potential? We are more motivated to be productive and end the workweek on a satisfying note.

Saturday, May 9

Monday, May 11

As the productive mood carries over, we may wake up organized and ready to tackle some job we’ve been putting off. A PlutoUranus hangover motivates us to: Clear the chaos and find the underlying order; Begin a project that we are really excited about; or Outline a plan to further your road to success. Do determine on some such meaningful project. Make it happen. The Moon goes Void of Course at 3:35pm. Enough momentum carries us to the finish line of the day. When the Moon changes into Aquarius at 6:22pm, social hour calls, or you need some space to “let it all hang out.” Job well done!

Sunday, May 10

Mother’s Day is a good excuse to invite friends, family and neighbors to visit. We’ll be glad to see a lot of these folks.

Perhaps even some broken fences can be mended. As the day goes on, some tempers may get frayed, especially if certain behavior is expected. Questions come up: What is your role in this group of people? How do you see yourself and how do you see others? How do they see you? Some people may act out the group gestalt in a way reveals hidden undercurrents. Don’t blame that person. Let your heart lead the way. This could be the best party ever! If you are not socially inclined today, there are other contexts in which these questions emerge. If you were to write a social statement about your life, who you are and what you do, what would you want others to know about you? Creativity surges into the evening.

A VoC Moon colors the dawn at 5:36am, spreading its wings across the day. “From a Distance” is an Aquarian song with a broad perspective on life that we may tap into today. When you step back from you personal concerns, how do things look? It’s another “smile on your brother” (and sister) kind of day. Mars enters Gemini at 9:40pm, creating a bit of restlessness. Almost simultaneously the Moon enters the dreamtime sign, Pisces, at 9:53pm, coloring our night with otherworldly yearnings and deflating our energy level, like the air out of a balloon. Something is going on. What is it?

Tuesday, May 12

Harnessing our energy after a challenging night is not easy, so be gentle with yourself and others. We’re all in this together. We all experience the same flow of energy, even if we express it in very different ways. That’s why we are each who we are, to add our drop of special energy to the sea of life. There is a tendency to be distracted, even worried, as the afternoon wears on. If you can lift yourself out of such a mood, you are making a great contribution to those around you, as well as yourself. This is meaningful spiritual work. Call upon inner guidance and have faith that all is well in the cosmic dance.

Some (many?) people will take off from work, or leave early, perhaps to join a march for _________ (your choice of meaningful causes). What will spark you? There’s no way to know until the day. What a day! Expect the unexpected.

Saturday, May 16

The Moon moves into Taurus at 2:02am, settling things down so we can get some needed rest. The day smoothes out as it goes along with a nice flow and “good, good, good, good vibrations.” This is a highly aesthetic day, perfect for music and art and dancing in the park. And a great date night, with dinner and a movie just the ticket. Many other choices fit the bill as well, with romance in the air, or just plain, old-fashioned “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

your arms to the sun. Enjoy to your full capacity and make the day that glorious.

Sunday, May 24

A Void of Course Moon claims the day at 5:49am, infused with the benevolent rays of royal planet Jupiter and the shimmering excitement of Uranus. Anything could happen. Follow impulses that flash and sparkle like diamonds. Go with the flow, following the yellow brick road of the day down unforeseen bi-ways of the road less traveled, like poet Robert Frost: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”

Monday, May 25

Memorial Day. What are you commemorating? As it moves into Virgo at 3:52am, the Moon enters a square dance with several other planets today and tomorrow—Saturn and Mars, Neptune and Mercury retrograde. Did you get lost in those woods yesterday, following the yellow brick road? Whatever we did, wherever we went, it really did make a difference and we need more of it. If you are on vacation, you made a smart move. Reality seems rather vague, and a bit harsh. We are not sure about what is going on and what to do about it. Going with the flow is about the only way to go. Many of us are likely to feel listless, a bit overwhelmed. Listen to your body and what it needs, always the best course when Virgo is involved. The organic wisdom of Nature in every cell of our bodies knows what the priorities are, and the best response to the day and the moment.

Tuesday, May 26

Yesterday’s discomfort remains. Regular routine eludes us, which may have been fine yesterday but maybe not today. Discombobulated as we might be, we are likely to reset our priorities hourly, either by choice or necessity. We are pulled in several directions at once. Distractions and confusion abounds. Take breaks to ground. Eat healthy food—don’t just grab something in a rush. Create a lovely atmosphere around you. Pay attention to the natural world for inspiration. This energy can be used well if we take note of what is appropriate and follow on

from there—first things first. The Moon goes Void of Course at 9:21pm with a feeling of relief, like we’ve made it to the finish line of a busy couple of days. We did good.

Wednesday, May 27

The Moon, the second hand on the cosmic clock, remains VoC until it enters Libra at 4:42pm, leaving most of the day on autopilot, with static from chatter that doesn’t make sense. A lot of people are very talkative, successive phone calls punctuate the day, along with texts and tweets. The change of Moon sign this afternoon allows more meaningful dialogue, resulting in some decisions and goals by evening. Spend some significant time with your partner.

Thursday, May 28

A smoother flow of conversation is engaged today, with various points of view and interesting information. Meetings, conferences or classroom learning may be on your docket. Everyone has something to contribute. Wacky comments can be useful and suggest options not yet considered, especially likely with Mercury in retrograde. Those who start with, “This may be a dumb question,” may stir up a hornet’s nest of vigorous debate that brings forth new facets of the situation at hand.

Friday, May 29

The Moon interfaces with Pluto then Uranus, from midnight to morning. Overnight disturbances or worries keep some of us awake, thinking over the conversations, having another serious one, or perhaps mulling over an important decision. Others experience vivid dreams and an influx of spiritual guidance. These potentials are not mutually exclusive. It could be a complex night. By morning things are more determined, whether by our choice or someone else’s. Some potentially unsettling interactions may start the day, but can be cleared up by paying attention. That’s worth whatever time it takes. Be careful to avoid accidents. The Moon is VoC at 3:20pm, with lingering moodiness to color the afternoon. People may be sensitive and reactive, likely to take things too personally. TGIF, we might as well call it an early day. If you can help it, which may not be up to you, take care not to end the workweek with relationships on a down note.

Significant perceptions can be tapped, seeing beneath surface appearances. Let the Great Mystery speak to you through the experiences that line up for you today. Serendipities and synchronicities abound. 11:11 anyone?

Sunday, May 31

The Great Mystery continues singing its silent song on a day that flows like honey. If you are resisting the flow, however, it won’t feel so sweet. Take time to smell the roses. Appreciate the beauty in the little daily things as well as grand vistas. Perhaps you want 48 Conscious Community - May 2015

Gong Meditation

Wednesday, May 13 • 7-8pm • $25

Gong meditations are one of the most deeply healing and restorative meditations possible, particularly because of the deep state of relaxation that is attained in response to the sound vibration. The gong works on many levels from the physical to emotional and spiritual in order to heal and transform. As the sound of the gong creates deep relaxation and clears the mind, it also aids in the reorganization of emotional energy. Gong meditation participants typically lie face up on a yoga mat or blanket in resting pose, (Shivasana), or sit in a chair to experience the tremendous healing sounds and vibrations.
