Letter from the Publisher Welcome to the 2015 fall season of “This is Your Life.” If you are feeling confused, disoriented, and/or out of sync with the world we live in, welcome to the earth plane experience. The conference season is over for this year and I for one am thankful because I can use the rest. I spoke more than 20 times at various conferences and expos this year and was pleased to meet so many of you in person and hear your thoughts on this magazine. My new column on dream interpretation appears for the first time in this issue. I have been teaching and demonstrating dream interpretation for many years and decided to put it into print to introduce more people to the concept and its great value. Everyone dreams but most people do not remember their dreams. Each column with offer a brief tip on how to improve your dreaming experience and include one or more actual dreams and their interpretation for their instructional value. The dreams will come from my classes and demonstrations because the best interpretation is interactive where I can ask the participant questions. Sometimes there is not enough recall to properly interpret the dream and it is better to find that out in a verbal contemporary setting than through other forms of communication. Gratitude is one of the highest forms of human expression. It is a big contributor to the state of grace we all hope to achieve on our spiritual path. Too often people misconstrue the magnitude of gratitude and how little effort is necessary to express it in relation to the benefits we receive in exchange. The beauty of gratitude is that the more you express thankfulness for what you receive, the more experiences you will have to be thankful for. So give thanks for the smallest gifts of kindness that come your way each day. It can be a child smiling at you as you pass on the path or the penny you found or the pet that just wants to be scratched or petted. It works for me and I know it will work for you. Happy Thanksgiving. In America, we have institutionalized gratitude into the holiday of Thanksgiving that we celebrate this month. Our Mexican and Canadian neighbors, and many other countries of the world have done the same, perhaps on different days and with different motivations, but the goal of expressing thanks as a nation is the same. Until next time,
Walter

Sixty thousand years ago there existed two additional continents, each about ten to twelve percent larger than the continent of Australia. One was located in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Africa named Atlantis. The other was located in the Pacific Ocean near present day Japan and named Lemuria or Mu. Why are they no longer there? Scientists have estimated that the oceans of the world are 300 to 400 feet higher than in the past. Ruins of a city have been found submerged off the western coast of Cuba, another on the coast of Spain, and there’s a road off the coast of Bimini in the Bahamas. Giant ruins of a civilization have been discovered under the sea near Yonaguni-Jima, Japan. Legend has it (and most legends are rooted in actual events as I’ve discovered) that the Atlanteans destroyed the remaining six islands warring against one another after the continent was destroyed by earthquakes 18,000 years earlier (as it sat in the middle of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). The Lemurians also sank their continent of Mu during a climactic war 5,000 years after the last islands of Atlantis were destroyed. Plato wrote about Atlantis in his Timaeus and Critias dialogues in 360 BC. These works have been commented upon, but with no proof, many think of them as legends. And Edgar Cayce, known as the “sleeping prophet,” received extensive information about Atlantis and Lemuria while giving “life readings” to people beginning in the early 1900s until his death in 1945. The Atlanteans and Lemurians were just like you and me. If you can imagine the differences in daily life between, say, the people of North America and Europe or Asia, or if you live in Europe or Asia, the differences between you and people living on other continents, that will give you an idea of the sophistication these two societies had achieved over 50,000 years. We have not yet caught up to their advancements in energy and medical treatments. The few Atlantean survivors (and those that migrated prior to the final destruction) traveled in all directions, including Egypt, Guatemala and the Yucatan, where they integrated with the much less developed local populations. Can you imagine the displacement and rise of water levels (along with tsunamis) that would have engulfed all the coastal towns around the world wiping out any trace of their existence when each of these two continents sank? The four largest religions of the world relate the story of Noah and his ark. During which of these catastrophes was this story born, and is it a true story?
4 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
Archeologists keep finding older and older civilizations, so we cannot dismiss all legends as old wives tales. Atlantis and the continent of Mu were seeded 60,000 years ago when our ET “uncles and aunts” finally decided upon the Adam and Eve humans as the most durable model for the “Earth Experiment” the Creator of our universe wished. As it was explained to me, when the Creator asks you to do something you can say “no,” but no one does. For over 10 million years they tried all sorts of human bodies, some of them hideous that the Atlanteans called “Things” and enslaved them for thousands of years before correcting their deformities. Other human bodies included the millions of Neanderthals that were cannibals and millions of Cro-Magnons. The Adam models could be created in just a few minutes using what we would term as highly advanced 3D printer machines. The different races were seeded in all parts of the world, from the hot to the cold. The continent of Atlantis had several groups seeded, compared to very few initially on the Mu continent, so their numbers grew much faster. Over almost 60,000 years both the Atlanteans and Lemurians made great technological advances, including free energy and healing we have yet to rediscover. As was channeled by Edgar Cayce, three destructions occurred for the Atlanteans. The first was over 50,000 years ago after the Atlantean population had grown to over one million people. Gaia, soul of the earth, shifted the poles to approximately where they are now. Several million people died when it became too cold to survive. The Second Destruction was a natural disaster. The Atlantean Continent sat on top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Bisecting the continent were huge volcanoes, and when they all erupted, over 90% of the continent sank into the ocean, raising the ocean levels around the world 160 feet (49 meters), and millions of people perished. All that was left were Poseidia, Aryan, and four smaller inhabited islands, plus the Bahamas, Bermuda and a few other islands. The Third Destruction was man-made since the Sons of Belial, in a Pearl Harbor-type attack, used ray guns that killed over 1.5 million people on Poseidia the first day. When the major inhabited islands sank, the oceans rose 41 feet (12.5 meters), again wiping out millions of people living on the coasts. The true story of Noah and his ark was born during this destruction 12,500 years ago. For thousands of years, the continent of Mu was an idyllic place to live in harmony. Only in the last one thousand years of its existence did things become unbearable. It was almost a utopian existence. But greed and the desire for power finally
resulted in another horrific war. There were five countries on the Mu continent separated by rivers or mountains. One of the five decided that the enormous bombs they possessed had no equal in the other countries, so they dropped two of these hydrogensized bombs on their enemies. But these countries had the same bombs, and the result was that the whole continent broke apart, once again killing millions of people either in the explosions or when the oceans rose 200 feet (61 meters). Is it any wonder that there are few records of these two continents’ existence? But with these new revelations comes the assurance that we will never destroy ourselves again. Tom T. What is addiction? It is a very tough topic, although quite widespread through our society. I think the more important question would be, why it is so widespread? What is the underlying issue that causes so many people to turn to alcohol, food, drugs, even sex? Addiction can come in many shapes and forms, and it can even be the addiction to thoughts, to worrying, to being the victim. A mentality that we cannot escape from describes addiction to me. It is a mind prison that keeps us looped in a vicious cycle. The symptoms of our issues are a good indicator of where to start, although they are not the root cause of the problem, just the signs, the red flags. In struggling with any addiction, especially the mind and the thoughts, I have personally grappled with its very issues that stem from disconnection, the feeling of being lost, trying to find the answers. I believe addiction is the sign of seeking. What are we seeking so desperately? Is it love? Security? Despite the myriad of answers, most of us seem to be seeking the kind of love that is most elusive: self-love. Selfacceptance of our past and present is the most difficult to reach, and yet we all need it. On this journey, the addiction is simply a way to medicate the pain away, to escape it for a second, to deal and cope with daily activities. The song by Mumford and Sons, “Awake My Soul”, comes to mind, and the line: “My weakness I feel I must finally show.” And so why are so afraid to be ourselves? Afraid to be raw, exposed, and even open ourselves up to all the judgments of the world? Hiding away from our self is one of the ways the soul begins to feel suffocated, afraid and lost. In this disconnection, from its very source of unconditional love, we begin to seek comfort in the unnecessary things that offer us temporary relief, and strangely, so often harm us. So how do we tackle this healing journey we all require in order to grow? Whether it’s a divorce, any kind of loss, job stress, we all go through it. Eckhart Tolle brings up the cause of pain and suffering in a very eloquent way: “All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. All forms of fear are caused by too much future and not enough present.” And so we see that all of our perceived issues are part of this continuity that the mind creates between past present and future, although we do know time is not linear and is also illusory in the way we think of it. It sounds easier said than done, especially when dealing with life’s traumas. However, when we truly sit and think of this, we can begin to practice stillness and a way to be mindful of the present more and more. This will tear us 8 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
apart from the memories of our past, and more importantly, our judgments of it. We dwell too much in judgment and not enough in compassion it seems. Self-compassion is extremely important and yet so difficult. So why can it be easier to forgive another and not ourselves? Well, as they say, we are our own worst critic. Why do we constantly bully ourselves through the use of our minds? The mind is a powerful tool. However, in psychological aspects, there are many components to the mind. If the ego runs our lives, then you can be sure the bully has taken over. The bully is the one that talks you into doing harmful things to yourself and possibly others, the one that keeps you in the addiction and waves the prize in front of you but never relinquishes it. The ego has always been a huge obstacle for humanity. It runs us in ways that we do not even consciously realize. To be present and conscious is the number one challenge on the path to our healing, our spirit emerging from the waters of confusion.
An addiction promises many things: escape, some sort of medicine to the pain, the numbing of our troubles, etc. However, it delivers very little, if anything, and so the true path is our deep healing, our deep self-acceptance. If desire sent us on the path of addiction, and constant seeking, whether it’s a better job, to become rich, to change our appearance, or even just to feel better for a second, then we are trapped in a cycle of seeking. When will we learn that it will actually never end? Is that a rewarding enough answer for our spirit? Or is that rewarding to the ego? The ego loves the merry-go-round because that reinforces its existence, but true spiritual wisdom can be attained in the knowing that we are more than our bodies, than our addictions and our past. We are beyond all of it, and if we can feel that for one moment in our day, our load would become a bit lighter, and we would breathe a bit softer. All About Town… Mirabai Devi
Oneness Festival Worldwide The Bodhi Spiritual Center - Chicago, IL September 26th, 2015
by Theresa Puskar “The Divine Light always works. It’s impossible for the Light not to work… that’s Its Nature.” – Mirabai Devi If you are sensitive to energy, you may have noticed strong shifts from September 24th to the 28th. According to the teachings of the Oneness University’s founder, Sri Bhagavan and many of His contemporaries, the earth underwent a massive evolution at that time. A portal to more peaceful, higher consciousness is said to have opened. On Saturday, the 26th I had an opportunity to celebrate this wondrous transformation with fellow Oneness students as well as with spiritual leader, author, and healing facilitator, Mirabai Devi. The event was the Oneness Festival Worldwide, which was co-hosted by the Flowering Heart Center (Downers Grove), and Bodhi Spiritual Center (Chicago). “The transmission of Divine Light is a process facilitated by Mirabai Devi which accelerates the soul’s evolution, transmutes karma, purifies the body and subtle centers, and activates and awakens your true Divine Nature.” – Mirabai Devi Born in South Africa, and now living in Hawaii, Mirabai is revered for her healing gifts, and especially the energetic healing light transmissions she channels from Divine Mother. With strong links to the earth and the Feminine Divine, Mirabai has a regal presence that exudes the gentle, nurturing nature of great Mother. I had an opportunity to have two healing experiences with her, and in both instances I gained powerful insights and felt a great sense of peacefulness and quiet calm. “Only when you experience the deepest and most darkest pain can you know the most supreme joy. There in the ugliest most pain-ridden face lies the most precious creator, God… Reveal God in every form.” – Mirabai Devi 10 Conscious Community --NOVEMBER 2015
While we aspire to experience pain-free lives, the truth is that none of us are exempt from emotional and physical suffering. Pain is a part of the human condition. My most recent interior crusade deals with how much I have avoided feeling the pain that I know exists deep within me. As I have mentioned in previous articles, I have been working my way out of my addiction to busy-ness and over-achieving. I ask myself, “Theresa, how does this choice serve you? What are you so afraid of?” Then I note that at the root of my hurried life is my fear of physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. Ironically, I have also come to realize that while I’ve been doing all I can to avoid the pain, in my attempts at avoidance, I have actually added to the pain. I liken my experience to muscle discomfort. While I rarely feel any physical pain, whenever any pressure is applied to my muscles, I realize just how sore they really are. Similarly, while I stay busy in my attempt to avoid pain, if I add a little pressure, the pain that is looming under the busy-ness reveals itself. While I respect my strong work ethic, I know that I have been over-taxing my nervous system. I have noted that for many years, I spent most of my time in “fight or flight” mode – breathing in a very shallow way, and always ready to wage war. This way of living causes me greater and greater concern. “God feels compassion for your pain and wants to take your pain. Your pain does not belong with you; it belongs with God. It has to be offered back and surrendered up. All that then remains is your Divine nature, which is pure love, compassion, and kindness.” – Mirabai Devi As is always the case with this benevolent universe, when I ask for clarity from my Divine, it is given in such magical,
delightful ways. This journey of discovery and transformation is no exception. On three separate occasions I gained insight and instructions on this issue. During the meditation and energy transmission with Mirabai, I prayed to Divine Mother for help. I had a vision of Mother Mary that was reflective of Mirabai’s quote above. She was very strong, yet compassionate and nurturing. She told me that my hurriedness was based in my fear of being hurt. She assured me that she holds me safe and warm within her womb, and suggested that I envision this whenever I find myself anxious and rushed. I have been doing so since, and I have found this image to be very calming. “The more you are able to let go and surrender, the more the Divine can work in your life. Either you let go, or you hold on and suffer.” – Mirabai Devi I received my second insight during a meditation soon after the energy transmission with Mirabai. My great grandmother appeared. I asked her if she had a message for me. She proceeded to tell me that a large part of why I have been exerting myself so intensely in the working world was because I had made a soul commitment to the women in my lineage to break the chain of being mistreated and invisibility. Reflecting on my female ancestors, each of them in their own way had been minimized. They had been told that they were not the intellectual equals of their brothers, or were told that they should stay home and care for the family. They were not encouraged to shine in the working world, and became disciplined and committed homemakers. My great grandmother thanked me for succeeding in the working world. She said that I had broken the chain. She assured me that the paradigm had been shifted within the lineage, and that my work with this is complete. She stated most emphatically that I should slow down. She said that the women in my lineage died at too young an age because they worked too long and hard supporting others and ignoring their own needs (does this sound familiar?). I was encouraged not to make the same mistakes. This confirmed my inner knowing – that I need to slow down and ask for help. To further solidify this message, one of the women who had been meditating with me asked if I had known an older woman who wore a brown stole. She said that on several occasions throughout the evening’s meditation session, the spirit of this elderly woman appeared by my side. Of course, I have seen photos, and I know that my great grandmother did, in fact, wear such a stole. Aren’t life’s gifts extraordinary? I truly feel so guided and blessed. “The whole Universe is made of love, every atom, every fiber, every cell, it is all a creation of love, created in love, and very few experience this. Those who do, experience who they truly are.” – Mirabai Devi
Finally, the third message came to me through my dear friend, Jessica. We ride the train together each day, and this afternoon, after sharing these experiences with her, she responded with a powerful insight that she had received. She noted how I come alive when I speak of my one-woman show, or anything related to creative self-expression. She encouraged me to center my priorities more on my creativity. With each choice that I make, she suggested I ask myself, “Does doing this align with raising my energy and consciousness through creative pursuits?” If not, then she suggested I learn to say no to them. While this is still a work in progress, I am enthusiastic about making this shift. One of the contemplations that Paula Rosenfeld suggested in her excellent book, The Oneness Blessing, is as follows: “What kind of personal Divine or higher force would you like to have? What would you call it?” Since visiting the university in India I have struggled with choosing just one personal Divine. When I meditate, I see Jesus Christ, Mother Mary, Sister Holy Spirit, Kwan Yin, the laughing Buddha, Pachamama, and Sri Amma Bhagavan. In this case, my Divine came through Mirabai Devi as the blessed Mother Mary. Clearly, I needed nurturing, compassion, and a sense of deep protection. What better manifestation of this than my Divine Mother? Next time you find yourself exhausted and overwhelmed with the busy-ness in your life, I would encourage you to take a moment, stop, and ask yourself some questions: “What am I so afraid of? What will make me feel safe enough to slow down?” Then take a few moments to focus on: “What is my passion? What fills me energetically?” If you know what does, then I encourage you to focus your attention and time on what contributes to that passion. If you are over-busying yourself with other tasks, perhaps it is time you learned to say No to that which drains you, and Yes to experiences that feed your heart, mind, and soul. I challenge you to join me on this crusade. Let’s see where this magical Divine experiment takes us! To learn more about Mirabai Devi, you can visit her website at mirabaidevi.org, or call the Mirabai Devi Foundation at 760216-1029. From the Heart Soul at the Helm of Destiny
by Alan Cohen When actress Meryl Streep was about to graduate from college, she planned to become a lawyer. She applied to law school and set up an appointment with an admissions officer. On the morning of her interview, she overslept and missed her appointment. At that point she decided she would rather pursue an acting career instead. And aren’t we glad? Meryl Streep is considered by many fans and critics to be the greatest living actress. She has garnered three Academy Awards out of 19 nominations, 6 Golden Globes out of 28 nominations, and a vast array of other acting awards, totaling 171 wins out of 260 nominations. It was no accident that Meryl Streep overslept on the day of her admissions interview. While her intellect told her she should become a lawyer, her inner being recognized her grander destiny. On that crucial morning her soul commandeered her life path. What a loss to the world it would have been if Meryl Streep’s true talents were missed because she followed her mind rather than her heart! You, too, have a destiny your soul has chosen. Your intellect may tell you one thing, but your soul continually prompts you to stay on course with your mission. In the first Superman movie, Superman’s parents, realizing that their planet was about to be destroyed, placed the baby Superman in a space capsule and propelled him off toward earth. During his long journey, a series of audio recordings taught Superman about his powers and purpose. By the time he arrived on earth, he knew who he was and what he was here to do. Likewise, you and I were seeded with the awareness of our true identity, potential, and destiny before we came to earth. But then we forgot. The density of the three-dimensional world obscured our memory of our identity and our vision. But in spite of the distractions of the toys and trinkets of trivial purposes, your soul has not forgotten who you are and what you are here to do. Your inner being is constantly urging you to live in accord with your true mission. We all have critical choice points, defining moments at which we are invited and urged to stay on track with our destiny. When I was 14 years old I was living in a bad part of town with many seedy influences. With pimples, braces, and a gawky body, my self-esteem was in the pits. I felt lost and alone. Then one day I received an invitation to attend a youth brunch at my synagogue. While I had no reason to attend—I was turned off to religion— something inside me urged me to go. There I met a young rabbi who gave an impassioned speech that stirred my soul. I became 12 Conscious Community --NOVEMBER 2015
deeply involved in the temple youth group, the rabbi became my mentor, I associated with friends of a higher caliber, and my life changed entirely. That event and my relationship with my mentor were pivotal incidents in my life. They were my dates with destiny. Perhaps you are now facing a critical choice point in your own life. “Should I be with a certain relationship partner?” “Should I leave?” “Where can I find a job that will bring me both passion and income?” “Where is my right home?” “What can I do to foster my health?” “What spiritual path belongs to me?” While you may have spent a great deal of time and effort asking your mind, other people, and external sources for the answers to these important questions, you may not have asked your soul. The mind wonders, but the soul knows. Ask your soul to guide your destiny, and it will do so with amazing results. Use this powerful affirmation: “I now allow my soul to guide me to my highest destiny.” Your soul will immediately leap to respond. Love will have its way. When you come to the end of your life, there is but one important question you will need to answer: “Was I true to my soul’s calling?” Did you follow your deepest guidance? Were you the person you came to be, and did you do the things you came to do? Do not assess your success by the yardsticks of achievement dictated to you by others. They are often shallow and do not apply to you. Assess your success by how much your outer life has aligned with your inner truth. Real achievement is more spiritual than material. Outer attainment means nothing if your soul is starving. Soul nourishment brings true value to life. You can wander from your soul’s path, but you cannot lose it. Even the apparent detours are a part of the journey to your true destination. What seems to be an oversleeping that misses one appointment is really an awakening to keep your true appointment. The next time you see Meryl Streep in a movie, remember that soul stands at the helm of destiny, and all divinely guided appointments will be kept. ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Moon Void of Course(VOC) by Kaye Berjot Throughout the course of the Astrology Basics 101 series, I have covered a great deal of subjects. In some cases the topics were a little more advanced than the traditional basics. I felt it necessary to at a minimum introduce these concepts to you because they help to add a little more clarity to how astrology works. Therefore, if you need to revert back to any of the articles from the series, please do not hesitate to visit the Conscious Community Magazine website. In this article, I’ll discuss the Moon Void of Course (or Void of Course Moon), its significance and ways of coping with it. This topic has been popping up a lot recently. It is not considered to be a major event in astrological terms because it does not present the shock and awe that transits like squares, conjunctions, oppositions, trines and sextiles deliver. To be honest, it is almost a non-event because you actually have to listen for it. What is interesting about Moon VOC is that it takes place approximately 40% of the time, throughout the course of a year. Therefore, it’s ironic that you have to pay attention to an event that happens more often than any other astrological event. The Moon VOC is the time period from when the moon makes its last aspect in one sign before moving into the next sign. The moon is the fastest moving planet and transitions from one sign into the next every one to three days. What that means is that the moon is constantly in motion, it’s never retrograde. Because the moon is constantly in motion, it’s inevitable that she will connect with “something”…i.e. another planet or transit, until the moment that she doesn’t. At that point in time, the only “thing” that the moon has to connect with is you through your higher self. In previous articles, I talked about how the sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and how Cancer is the natural ruler of the fourth house. In this article, I’d like for you to focus on the Moon and her attributes. As a reminder her attributes are connected to emotions and intuition.
To me sitting still means to allow all other influences to be still. Allow the noise to be still. It’s the hardest thing to do, and that is why we have 40% of the time throughout the course of a year to do it. In actuality, I’m only pointing out the obvious to you. These are things that have been said to you before, yet you just couldn’t see it because you were constantly swimming. So just allow yourself to float. In conclusion, I’m hoping that you understand the point of a Moon Void of Course and its benefits. When a VOC is in Aries, focus on who you are, and not on who everyone thinks you are. When VOC is in Taurus, meditate on what you have, and not what the noise says you should have. When VOC is in your eighth house, meditate on how you view transition, and not on how others believe you should be transitioning. When VOC is in your twelfth house, rid yourself of the things that are unhealthy for your growth, and hit the mute button on what others are telling you is unhealthy. The Moon Void of Course is your time and your space. It’s your time to fully utilize your intuition to help you. As always, thank you for supporting the Conscious Community Magazine! Until next time! Kaye Berjot is a Transformational Astrologer who can be contacted at kaye@askkaye.com
Moon VOC is significant because it is the time when you are able to commune with your higher self without all of the noise from other planetary alignments. It’s during this time that you can focus on your own intuition and guidance. The lines of communication are clear and open. Because Moon VOC occurs so often, we forget that it’s actually there. It’s like looking for water when you are already swimming in a fresh water lake. During a Moon VOC we have the opportunity to connect with that emotion of “having” rather than the notion of “searching”. It’s really quite subtle, so subtle that we almost forget that it exists. When these events occur the best thing to do is to meditate, sit still, and listen to your higher guidance. Sitting still does not mean to physically sit still, although it can be beneficial. I’m pretty sure that this is why our parents and grandparents told us to “be still.” 13 Conscious Community -

DREAM ON by Walter Perschke
Dreams are the primary way that our higher self communicates with us. Dreams are a spontaneous product of our subconscious mind and beyond the reach of the will. If you understand your dreams and the messages they hold for you, you have made a big step forward on your spiritual journey. By interpreting the real dreams of real people, this column is intended to facilitate your understanding. Everyone dreams; most people don't remember. To assist in your recollection, keep a dream log by your bed to record everything you can remember as soon as you awaken. This sends a message to your higher self that you want this information and more will flow to you. Happy Dreaming! Dreamer 1: I had this dream a couple of weeks ago. I was in the garage of my home that I grew up in, and my friend came up and said she had horses and I say, “Oh!”, and then I think I had the reins of the horse or something. I don’t know. All of a sudden, the horses took off. And she went running after them. I thought, maybe it was my fault. So I let go. Maybe it was my fault. Next, I saw her running down the street after the horses. Walter: That’s it? Dreamer 1: And then I thought, maybe I should call the police. How could I get the horses back, you know? I couldn’t get the horses back. Walter: Do you feel things slipping away from you? Dreamer 1: Yes. Walter: Ok. That’s the symbolism of things slipping away from you and it is about letting go. Dreamer1: It could be. My dad’s in the hospital. Walter: Okay, well, that’s closure. There was a very famous song written about that in the 60’s. I believe it was “Softly, As I Leave You.” It is a personal choice. That’s what it’s saying. It’s time to let go.
14 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
Dreamer 2: I’ll do my best to do it fast. It’s a three-part. The first part is me on a motorcycle, and I don’t ride motorcycles. It’s my mother on her own motorcycle. I’m like okay…. and she chooses to show up, a really brief type of dream. So she goes like she is on a horse and up and hits a parked car and that’s all I see. The next thing is there is some blood on the asphalt and she stands up. She’s okay, she’s alive, she will make it, but obviously this woman is goofy and I see her hand, specifically her right wrist, being bumped really badly, so all I know is that it ends right there. I know I need to get her some help fast, and tend to her. So that’s the first part. Walter: Is it her blood? Dreamer 2: Yes. Walter: Is she right-handed? Dreamer 2: Yes. And my impression was, what I felt it means to me, was the meaning of riding a motorcycle, that she does not control her emotions and it gets her in trouble and it costs. A recent event that happened was that she had a fight with my father. It ended up with her going to a dealership and purchasing a car without any rationalization or research -- just getting it. And although I didn’t see any cars in the dream, it just shows me her pattern of not being able to deal with her emotions, even at her age. It’s almost as though it showed me that I also have a bike with lots of emotion in me, but I choose to ride it right with no showing off. Walter: Is this a motorcycle? Dreamer 2: Yes, and so on to the second dream with me and my father, and my brother is there. There is a device that flies vertically high up, and it looks like a baby chopper. It’s for two people only. I feel nauseous. I don’t really feel comfortable or safe on this thing. Walter: And this is with your brother? Dreamer 2: With my father. And my brother is the one who proposed for us to try it out. It’s almost like he owns that or I don’t know… just my brother is in the picture. So my father is right next to me, and there’s no safety belt on it, only small bars on the sides for each of us to hold to that’s completely unsafe. It’s new age technology, whatever it is. And that thing shoots up and
you look down, and it’s really high, it’s really high, thousands of feet. And the next thing that happened is that my father just falls out of this thing. My brother is using something like a remote control, and he uses the device to play. I have no control over this device to fly. And I see, in another second, my father with a crazy-looking face, and I’m like he’s about to die now. It’s like a moment of facing death with one I know. The next thing is I cannot help him because I can’t even manipulate this device because my brother’s the one on the ground. And then halfway through this I’ve already accepted that he’s gonna’ be dead soon, and free falling, but halfway through his fall, I notice that he has, you know, rockets. They have those, in my land it’s a turbina, or turbine. That means it’s this rocket-type of fire that propels you forward so that thing gets activated and he lands on his feet and he’s rescued. He’s not crushed, therefore he is alive. Then suddenly the device I was sitting on and also worrying that I am gonna’ fall off of, too, gets lowered to his model, to my fathers model, and grounded finally. And I’ve checked my father. He’s unconscious but he has a pulse. So he’s sort of half dead, half alive. Meaning he is alive but he almost made it through a heart attack or something because the shock he went through thinking he’s about to die was just super intense. Now in this part of the dream, I wake up so much in shock and terrified that I couldn’t hold the intensity of it. It was not funny at all. I started tearing to release the shock. I was completely shocked. In thirty years, I only once was shocked in my dream state where I’ve I ended up seven days in the hospital with major problems. This the second time going through shock after a dream, and my heart was going like this . I called my parents that day to check on them. My mother and father were fine. I know that often parents represent your other side of consciousness, too, not necessarily them directly but you never know so. My father had an accident that day, nothing major, in his truck that he drives, but he was fine. That’s about it. So both parents are going through troubles. Walter: Do you have other brothers and sisters? Dreamer 2: Just one brother. Walter: And he wasn’t in the dream? Dreamer 2: There was a third part. And the third part was very technical. Basically, it showed me that he got a car. My brother had new technology again, something that goes above the other cars; it doesn’t ride on the ground.
Walter: All three. It’s about your family relations. It’s about you moving. It sounds like you are stuck and you are looking for a way to move. Dreamer 2: I want to actually relocate physically, not to be that close with all of them. Walter: It’s telling you that you should do that, definitely do that. It’s a question of whatever you feel is a safe distance. My daughter decided that. I live in Chicago and her mother lives in Dallas, and she decided to go to a school in New York. When she enrolled, I said, “Are you going to school in Long Island because it’s the farthest you can go from your parents without leaving the country?” And she said, “Yes”. That’s kind of what you’re looking at. You need to find something in your comfort zone far enough way, but not so far that you feel isolated and abandoned. And what the multiple modes of transportation are saying is really, in a sense, the sky is the limit for you. You can do anything you want to do and you’ll be fine, but you have to pick. You have to choose one. And the fact that your parents are safe means they’re going to be safe. They are going to survive your move. That’s why I asked you if you have another sibling, and the sibling came in the third part. It is about family relationships and that you’re concerned about them. But you don’t want the responsibility of saving them and you shouldn’t. They are going to be okay. The dream is saying that they are going be okay. You need to make the move and whatever method you choose is fine. And you’ve chosen a couple of risky ways to go here, but that’s okay. This is a very complex dream. What it is saying is that no matter what you choose, it will work and that you should take more risk. That’s what it is saying. Because what happened? You took a risk. You got in this thing and you didn’t even know how it worked, and it went up in the air. But you got back to the ground and you were grounded again. And that’s okay. So it’s opening you up to more risk. It’s really a marvelous multi-leveled dream, but it’s all positive, it’s all good. Thank you, that was really a wonderful dream. Anybody else? Walter: Hovers? Dreamer 2: Something like that. And it was almost like a spaceship. It was a car for this planet but nobody owns one yet. So my brother was the third piece, the vehicle was very technical and, on a cool note, nothing bad there. Only technologically advanced, but it applied to both parents. It was like my father almost having a heart attack and dying and my mother getting into small accidents and being like a child. Emotionally irresponsible, that’s how I felt. So, does it sound like a reflection of my family or something internal, even, going on with me?

The Shared Heart
New Dimensions of Relationship by Joyce and Barry Vissell
Poggio Bustone: Knowing We are Forgiven Joyce and I are trudging up a very steep, rocky trail near the top of a mountain high above the Rieti Valley in central Italy. We left our friend Evelyn down at the end of the road at the monastery of Poggio Bustone. The drive up the winding mountain road with sheer cliff drop-offs was plenty enough adventure for her. It’s only 900 or so more feet of elevation gain to the top of the mountain, where lay a more primitive monastery. Right! Only 900 feet! Practically straight up the mountain… About 800 years ago, Saint Francis also climbed this mountain. Only he did it barefoot and without a trail! It was a time in his life when he realized he could not go on without feeling God’s complete forgiveness. You see, his early life was filled with riotous living, drinking, partying, orgies and, even worse, fighting in battles against neighboring towns. Although there are no direct references, I am convinced that he must have experienced violence, even killing or wounding other men. In his early twenties, he began to turn his life over to God, but he had to know he was forgiven for the unconscious actions of his former years. So he climbed this mountain, found a cave near the top, and sequestered himself away from the world to seek complete forgiveness. He was determined not to leave that cave until he knew for certain that he was forgiven. We don’t know exactly how long he meditated and prayed on that mountain, but we do know that he finally received a clear message from God: he was completely forgiven. Thus began a new phase in Francis’ life. He no longer had to carry the heavy burden of his past transgressions. Like most things and places of Saint Francis, the original cave has been transformed into a small chapel. It’s just too high and steep to be made into a “proper” cathedral. Yet it still retains a certain rustic simplicity and sacred feeling as a place of pilgrimage for the few hardy souls willing to make the trek. And, like Saint Francis, Joyce and I, a few years ago, were also climbing the mountain to seek forgiveness. We have often spoken about the unconscious actions of our younger years. I have always considered Joyce’s misdeeds as “lightweight.” Like once she stole a piece of fruit from a neighbor’s tree, and her parents marched her down the street to apologize. We both, on the other hand, have considered many of my teenage acting out to be a bit more major, and some could have been punishable by prison time. I have stolen things, unfortunately a lot of things. I have been mean. I have engineered some “pranks” that have ended up nearly scaring people to death. I could go on, but perhaps you get the picture. Tired from the climb, we arrived at the simple stone addition to the original cave. We opened the rough-hewn wooden door and entered the cool interior. We were alone. It would have been completely dark except for a shaft of light coming in from a tiny 16 Conscious Community --NOVEMBER 2015
window up high on a wall. We found a place to sit in front of a crude altar, and began to ask for forgiveness. Bottom line, both Joyce and I expected me to be sitting in the primitive chapel for a long time. Perhaps Joyce would feel forgiveness, and then she could do some sightseeing or sunbathing outside while she waited for me to finish my big ordeal. But that’s not what happened! Instead, I closed my eyes, preparing to list off my offenses. Within minutes, I felt complete forgiveness for all my actions! My first thought was, “Wait. This was too easy! I haven’t worked and sweated hard enough to earn complete forgiveness. I haven’t even gone through the whole list.” But I still felt an almost overwhelming sense of God’s unconditional forgiveness. I felt light as a feather with the divine assurance that nothing I have ever done could keep me from my worthiness for divine love. There is a famous line from the Course in Miracles, “God does not forgive because He (She) never has condemned.” I have been the only one condemning myself. The Divine Presence is forgiveness. Forgiveness can never be earned. It is freely given at all times. So many of us, as children, have been misled into thinking we needed to earn our parents’ love and forgiveness. If only I was better behaved, or did things right, or apologized more, then I’d prove my worthiness to mom and dad. We then make God into a higher version of our parents. But this is futile. The Great Spirit loves us no matter what we’ve done. God sees all our actions, in the great experiment of free will, as a holy learning and growing process. Joyce was, needless to say, surprised to see me stand up and leave the chapel after only a few minutes. Her first thought was,

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS November…Balance, Partnerships, Intuition, Mother Energy, Groups by Elizabeth Summers As the falling leaves swirl around us, so does the multi-level energies of the Number Two and more importantly, the Number Eleven of November. This high strung vibration of intuition can create some intense nervous energy in those that are very emotional and sensitive even to the point of physical illnesses from worries. Ruling the subconscious, the Numbers Two and Eleven can bring on wild dreaming and restlessness which is not uncommon. These possible agitation energies can cause impatience in relationships that requires a lot of balance, setting of boundaries or negotiating situations into “win-win” through diplomacy. Therefore, it is not surprising that many “flare-ups” can occur around the Thanksgiving table! The Number Eleven is a Master Number taken on only by old souls of spirituality who have volunteered to come into human with only one purpose---to serve as a spiritual messenger. However, to fit all this electrical energy into the ‘human shoes” can be quite a trick so the human reverts to the lower energy of Two. Flipping back and forth energetically between Two and Eleven can become quite dizzying and confusing on occasions! One of the best solutions for this is to be around water. Either living near ponds, streams, oceans or jumping into Jacuzzis will calm this hyperactive static down to a more grounded level. In November, we move mid-month from the sign of Scorpio into the sign of Sagittarius. This can be a shock to many as Saturn, the “Marine Corps Drill instructor” of the Universe will now be sitting in the sign of Sagittarius until December 20, 2017. The word “Sagittarius” is Latin for “archer” and sure enough, Sagittarius souls will take aim at their goals at mid-November and intensify all efforts as it zooms into December. Don’t ask them to sit still too long and as boredom sets in their favorite phrase just might be “I am out of here”! Their quest for excitement mixed with a little intrigue can make them a force to be dealt with during the gentle energies of November. In addition, JUPITER IN VIRGO… AUGUST 15 TO SEPTEMBER 9, 2016 adds a touch of positive flavor to Virgos during this time. Jupiter enters Virgo on August 11th, 2015, and stays in this Mutable Earth sign until September 9th, 2016. 18 Conscious Community --NOVEMBER 2015
Although Jupiter is not at its happiest in Virgo, this is its detriment energy astrologically, the influence is still so positive as Jupiter is the “Daddy Warbucks” of the Universe!
Jupiter’s effects are to expand our experiences, our knowledge, and our understanding. Jupiter represents optimism, growth, generosity, joy, and abundance. From a Tarot perspective, the Number Two is the High Priestess card which brings in a need to listen to one’s intuition and especially when dealing with partnerships. The Number Eleven is the Justice card requiring balance in partnerships that frequently have arrived from previous incarnations. Where the energy of Number One is assertive and aggressive wanting to be the leader in all situations, Number Two says “show me the way and I will follow”. This quiet, supportive vibration, especially as a birthday Number, can get misinterpreted as weak and thus get walked over like a doormat. Non-combative and easily lead, this “people pleaser” can become co-dependent needing to be snapped out of its victim energy through difficult personal relationships especially in family. The Number Two is one of the “mother” indicators in Numerology. This feminine sensitive vibration needs to learn to be true to itself and speak up in its own defense. Setting boundaries, saying the word “no’ in many cases can be quite a challenge in corralling noisy children or setting boundaries in relationships but it must be done. The out of balance of Number Two is victimhood but there are no victims in life only inappropriate choices that have been made that need correction. The Numbers applied to the word “November” adds to a total vibration of transition of 13/4 which is the Death card in Tarot. The old is passing away and we are moving into a planning energy of nesting prior to new growth and beginnings that come in the Spring. Thanksgiving provides the perfect opportunity to serve others for all of us especially the Number Two and the Number Eleven. This energy which is fastidious, very detailed oriented to a fault sometimes can put all the details together for a wonderful event. Very hurt by criticism, be sure to “compliment the cook” on this
special holiday or Number Two energy will not be inviting you back! Relax, enjoy and be peaceful in this rather slow moving month. More importantly be in gratitude for all the abundance that the wonderful month of November celebrates and trust that “all is well. Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern
Tuning into the Muse of Music: Being in the Moment: 1965 and 2015 I’d like to begin with a note of gratitude. Thank you to all of you who sent healing vibes and prayers my way. Compared to how I felt when I wrote last month’s newsletter, I’m doing much better. I still have a long way to go, of course, and repairing the fractured teeth will take months, but I know how worse the damage could have been.
Here’s an overview: when you read statements like, “There’s no published research proving your hypothesis,” that’s disingenuous at best. There IS research, but the gatekeepers at the journals that count generally accept papers only from brand-name universities and not a community college. That does NOT mean there is NO research. It’s a classic Catch-22.
That seems to be a metaphor for so much of what’s been going down in the world lately. As a sound healer, part of my mission in life is to create an ongoing series of recordings that tune into the zeitgeist and manifest meditative soundtracks that serve multiple functions for healing, stress relief and inner peace. Based on the way the music arrived, I believe my latest release, Mindful Piano, is the latest part of that series.
Cosmic coincidence? One minute after finishing this newsletter, an email arrived from Health Freedom Alliance with an astounding headline and feature article. The editor-in-chief of The Lancet, one of the most respected medical journals in the world, writes, “Half of the scientific literature is false, due to studies with invalid analyses, small sample size, and flagrant conflicts of interest.” Wow. I can hardly wait to see the reaction to this bombshell.
But before I share some additional insights on the extra-musical benefits of Mindful Piano, I need to address the unexpected transition of Dr. Mitchell Gaynor.
50 Years Ago Today: Tuning in to the Muse of Music
He was scheduled to speak at the Globe Sound Healing conference, and I was looking forward to following up on previous conversations we shared some years ago. Like everyone else, I was shocked to read the reports of his reported suicide in September 16th. While we still await further details, you might find the official story of interest: http://www.nytimes. com/2015/09/20/health/mitchell-l-gaynor-59-manhattanoncologist-and-advocate-for-alternative-treatments-dies.html Dr. Gaynor was an integrative oncologist whose protocols in working with his cancer patients combined traditional medicine with crystal bowls, chanting and nutrition. I wish all of you could hear the entire panel discussion that Dr. Gaynor was scheduled to be part of during the conference. I hope this panel will be transcribed so that you could more readily understand the challenges sound healers, and researchers in many fields, face. If not, follow up next time with the best of what the panelists, Dr. Jim Oschman, Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, and conference organizer and sound healer David Gibson had to say about the politics and economics of research in this field. (In many ways, it’s similar to what goes on in many other fields, but that’s another newsletter) To hear these and other speakers, I recommend the MP3 and DVD recordings of the entire conference, now available from HungryMindRecordings.com
My life as a musician took a quantum leap when I attended an unamplified jazz concert in the faculty lounge of the Student Union at the University of Buffalo. The band was phenomenal, exploring the same dynamic dimensions as John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. I was sitting on the floor near the band, with my trumpet case, as always, by my side. At one point, the leader, pianist Jack Clarke, a force of nature on many levels, looked over at me and asked, “Is that a trumpet in that case?” I nodded. I would soon learn that he was a leading scholar of William Blake, Charles Olson and an award-winning poet in his own right. He said something like, “Come on up and sit in.” So I did. When it was my time to solo, I began to play some of my best riffs. Then, suddenly, I was enveloped in a whirlwind of sound. I remember feeling that the trumpet was an organic extension of my anatomy, rather than a horn with metal tubing. For the first time, it was as if the instrument was playing itself. I played things I had never played before. I was virtually levitating. At the end of the song, Jack looked over at me and smiled. He knew what had just happened. I had just been initiated into a whole new world of creativity and power. Coming Full Circle: Insights into Music, Mindfulness and the Present Moment The music you’ll hear on Mindful Piano began with the intention to record just one new song, to be added as a bonus track to my album Legacy, my solo piano anthology originally released in 1997. (Legacy had been out of print for ten years, and was originally scheduled to be re-mastered and re-released in mid2015.) But as soon as I sat down at the piano and began listening to my proprietary brainwave entrainment soundtrack, I unexpectedly— and delightfully—shifted into a high-coherence level of consciousness in which sound and space became living entities. The entire album channeled through as essentially a continuous download. Our brains are wired to analyze and predict melodic and harmonic structure. That keeps us hung up in the future. Mindful Piano shuts down that analytical mode, and within seconds, you’re in the zone of mindful awareness. This is a breakthrough album on several levels. In my opinion, that will become apparent to you if you allow yourself to listen with intention and attention. Especially with headphones, you’ll hear the actual ‘sound’ of the piano is richer and more harmonically ‘alive’ than any other album you’ve ever heard. The Universal Tone Remember how Carlos Santana describes the Universal Tone in his autobiography of the same name? “It’s a texture...it’s a way of using sound to connect with the divine in all of us.” That’s what my teachers have always told me, too. Not surprising, since he and I share many of the same teachers, including Hazrat Inayat Khan, John Coltrane and Dr. J. J. Hurtak, author of The Keys of Enoch, which I helped proofread. The Next-Gen celestial cathedral reverb field that my recording engineer, Warren Kahn, created for the first time during our sound check transforms each ‘note’ into a living ‘tone’. I had to change my pianistic approach, to allow the time for each note to smoothly fade into silence before I could hear the next phrase in my inner ear.

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery
The Power of Positive Prayer-and of Negative For many, the recent visit of Pope Francis to the United States marked a high watermark in positive energy and prayer. As I listened to the reporters and commentators covering the story, I was struck by how often I heard them speak about the strong vibration of peace and love that would permeate a room as soon as the pope entered. Because of this, Pope Francis was compared to other world leaders like Nelson Mandela known for their aura of love and peace. Another comparison could certainly be made with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. For me, the most moving part of Pope Francis’s visit was the coming together in positive prayer of so many men and women from many faith traditions including Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu. Indeed, I was so moved by that event that I texted, emailed or Facebooked the following heartfelt message to many of my friends and family: PEACE... Pope Francis’s Interfaith Service at Ground Zero was SO moving - especially the moment of silence when we were asked to pray, the children singing, “Let there be peace and let it begin with me,” and when we all were asked to embrace others in a sign of peace. And so... to you I say: May Peace Be With You. And—if you didn’t get this message from me then, I humbly offer it to you now. Over the years, I have written much about the power of positive thought and prayers. During the recent Institute of Noetic Sciences Conference in Oakbrook, IL, however, a friend stressed the idea that negative prayers are very powerful and, in fact, are a growing threat in today’s society. That friend is Bill Sweet from Spindrift Research (www.spindriftresearch.org), an organization founded in 1969 to study the effects of consciousness and prayer with scientific methods. Recently, Bill followed up by emailing me the text from Question #10 from the FAQ section of their site. According to Bill and the website, Spindrift warned about negative and evil prayers before others noticed and that it is now a matter of national security. Hmmm… Quite frankly, I found the argument put forth on the Spindrift website hard to resonate with because of its main 22 Conscious Community --NOVEMBER 2015
emphasis on the negative prayer power of Islamic extremists. That being said, one only has to open a history book to see the havoc that negative prayer and negative religion has wrought upon the world throughout the ages. Dr. Larry Dossey (www. dosseydossey.com), one of the most prominent researchers on prayer, addressed this in his 1997 book, Be Careful What You Pray For... You Just Might Get It. Dossey states: As we venture into the domain of negative prayer, let us bear in mind that religion has always kept close company with the sinister side of things. The briefest glance at the history of any religious tradition shows that the divisions separating spirituality and magic, light and shadow, have always been permeable. Paying attention to history is one of the best safeguards I know of resisting the temptation to reject the evidence for negative prayer without a hearing. Right now, I suspect that some of my New Age readers are shrugging their shoulders and sighing, “Yes, but that’s all that mainline institutionalized religion stuff! It’s not about us!” So, let me share a story from my personal life—an incident that demonstrates that negative power can be found in many places. During the 1970s, a little store dedicated to all things WICCA opened up in the Belmont/Central area of Chicago. A girlfriend and I decided to visit the shop. At first, it was a delightful experience. The shop was filled with herbs, powders and amulets of every description and the atmosphere was very light and airy. Then, a thin, wiry man walked into the store. Immediately the atmosphere changed. It was like getting hit with a wall of dark, sticky- as-molasses energy. Pleasant chatter ceased. Customers actually stopped what they were doing and turned to stare at the man. The proprietor quickly tended to the man and was visibly relieved when he left. He confided to the rest of us: “He’s into black witchcraft. We don’t like it when he comes into our store.” So, the negative can come in all kinds of packages. But that begs two questions: Why is negative prayer so powerful? And what can we do about it? Why is negative prayer so powerful? There is a growing body of scientific research that is providing some insights about how this negative prayer (you can substitute thought) works. In a 2012 Psychology Today article entitled “Can
Prayer Harm?” (www.psychologytoday.com/articles/199703/canprayer-harm), Dr. Dossey asks the question, “Can our thoughts affect events and peoples’ actions?” He answers that various experiments suggest that the answer is yes. He gives a number examples including this one: “In several different studies on the effectiveness of vitamin E on angina, the results could be directly correlated with the researchers’ positive or negative expectations. If researchers thought the vitamin would affect the disease positively, it did, and if they thought it wouldn’t have any effect, it didn’t.” Another example comes from the groundbreaking research of the late Dr. Maseru Emoto (http://masaru-emoto.net.html) whose work was featured in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know!? Emoto’s research indicated that water exposed to positive speech and thoughts would result in visually pleasing crystals being formed when that water was frozen. Negative intention, however, would yield ugly or loosely formed crystal formations. Emoto believed that water is a blueprint for our reality and that emotional energies and vibrations can change the physical structure of water. Why is that important? Consider this: In some organisms, up to 90% of their body weight comes from water. For humans, that percentage is 60%—and according to H. H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water. If Dr. Emoto is right and the structure of water is affected by the intentions directed at it, then those outside intentions, negative or positive, can, indeed, affect the very structure of our watery beings!
Wow! If this is happening to us as we experience our everyday life, then think of how this must be multiplied if we are soaking up the vibrations of negative prayer and intention! What can we do? Dr. Hanson has a plan and here’s the thumbnail: Step #1: Turn positive events or moments into positive experiences by adding attention and feeling. For example, if you receive a compliment, pay attention to that instead of deflecting it.
Step #3: Sense and intend that this positive experience is becoming woven into the fabric of your brain and yourself. Step #4: This is a bonus step. It can be hard to do, but is very powerful, according to Dr. Hanson. Let your old painful material be in the background of your awareness. At the same time, position your current positive experience in the foreground of you awareness. Hold both the background pain and the foreground positive experience in your awareness for 10-30 seconds straight. Dr. Hanson states that this will help fill the hole in your heart. Of course, there are other strategies that help protect us from the effects of negative prayer and negative intention. One of them is using positive prayer to counteract negative prayer. One of these is one that many of us in the Christian tradition learned as children. This prayer was highlighted in that Psychology Today article by Dr. Dossey. He tells this story:
What can we do about it? There is scientific research that can help us answer this question. One of those who have focused on answering this question is Rick Hanson, Ph.D. (www.rickhanson.net), a psychologist, Senior Fellow of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley and author of several books including Hardwiring Happiness and Buddha’s Brain. Dr. Hanson’s oft-quoted statement puts the situation in a very succinct package: “The mind is like Velcro for negative experiences, and Teflon for positive ones.” Dr. Hanson points out that most of the moments of our lives are either neutral or positive. The problem is that these moments get remembered with standard memory systems—here one moment and gone the next! Negative experiences on the other hand are instantly registered and intensely focused on, based on an underlying negative bias of the brain. These negative moments get stored in what’s called “implicit memory” which is feelingoriented and which directly feeds our underlying expectations, beliefs, action strategies and mood.
Step #2: Now that you’re paying attention, really savor that positive experience for 10 - 30 seconds. Research shows that it takes this time range to make those positive experiences stick and implant them into your “implicit memory.”
When I began to explore negative prayer, I asked Native American shamans in northern New Mexico, where I live, whether they thought this phenomenon was real. They all said yes. I inquired about their favorite methods of protection. One shaman asked me jokingly if I’d every heard of the Lord’s Prayer. He urged me to read it again, focusing on the phrase, “Deliver us from evil.” “You white people have one of the most powerful forms of protection, and you don’t even know it,” he smiled. Now isn’t that a great observation and also great advice? I do believe in exploring a wide range of techniques that can help us perfect the task at hand, which is doing something so that these world-wide increases in negative prayer do not negatively affect us. But like the Native American shaman pointed out, we also already have resources like the Lord’s Prayer that we should be using. Hmmm… But what about protecting not only ourselves as individuals, but also our family, our friends, our community, our country, the world? Now, there is some food for thought—and the subject of a future column. My Advice: Get your feeling of AWE on by visiting the water crystal section of Dr. Maseru Emoto’s website (http://masaruemoto.net/english/water-crystal.html) and viewing the photos from his research. Don’t forget to check out more of those stay-positive strategies at (www.rickhanson.net) and explore the wonderful insights and research of Dr. Larry Dossey (www. dosseydossey.com). P.S.: One of my regular readers, Debbie Hillman, emailed me to say that she particularly enjoyed my October column about Mothers Trust (www.motherstrust.org) in Ganges, Michigan and the Chicago Wisdom Project (http://chicagowisdomproject.org). Gong meditations are one of the most deeply healing and restorative meditations possible, particularly because of the deep state of relaxation that is attained in response to the sound vibration. The gong works on many levels from the physical to emotional and spiritual in order to heal and transform. As the sound of the gong creates deep relaxation and clears the mind, it also aids in the reorganization of emotional energy. Gong meditation participants typically lie face up on a yoga mat or blanket in resting pose, (Shivasana), or sit in a chair to experience the tremendous healing sounds and vibrations. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER November 2015
November 2015 Overview Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 1st, at 2:00am. Mercury becomes strategic in Scorpio as of November 2. This quicksilver Messenger of the Gods zooms through the deep mysteries Scorpio in three weeks, uncovering secrets, then launches into Sagittarius on the 20th. The truth will be told. Venus picks up the baton in Libra, her own sign, on the 8th, soon followed by Mars on the 12th. Personal conversations, business discussions and public dialogue are invested with strong feelings. Conversations can become more harmonious or more contentious, or both at once depending on the dynamics of the participants, altering the texture of relationships for better or for worse. Neptune turns direct, like the turning of the tide. Soon, strong waves break upon the shore. Some are grand surfing waves. Pay keen attention to maintain balance on your surfboard. Mercury on the 20th, then the Sun on the 22nd, enter Sagittarius, the visionary sign. These two central factors meet up with Saturn the late in the month, when we get a first take on our progress this year. The Full Moon on the 25th highlights a rather confusing interaction between Saturn and Neptune. The best of it allows us to witness how spirit manifests through the material world. On the other hand, various issues we might prefer to ignore come to our attention. We question our take on reality, not quite sure what is going on. Belief systems are staunchly defended, even in the face of facts. We have to ask: Whose facts? Who is telling the story? Are you walking your talk? We may be confronted with religious righteousness, whistle blowers or mind-blowing discoveries on some scientific front. Standard paradigms break open like Humpty Dumpty. Walls are crumbling down. We experience the limitations of our knowledge and face a reality check that dispels illusions and calls us to attention. We take on the question of how to manifest our goals. The Moon begins the month in sensitive, gentle Cancer. Challenged by a confrontation by transformational Pluto in the wee hours, perhaps troubling dreams or news—or, on the other hand, unexpected opportunities— take us by surprise. We have some things to consider and work through, with a breakthrough or change-up possible later in the morning. Don’t take everything too personally, and be careful of knee-jerk reactions. Attend to practical matters, as much can be accomplished. Pay attention all this week to the natural wisdom of your body, which offers wise clues to your best options. The Moon is Void of Course at 9:52pm.
Monday, November 2 Entering Scorpio at 1:06am, Mercury becomes shrewdly strategic and deeply analytical. This quicksilver Messenger of the Gods zooms through the hidden layers of Scorpio in just three weeks, exposing many secrets. Laser sharp insights and thorough investigation can change the playing field and outcomes. The Moon enters confident Leo at 9:48pm, adding to the day’s creative tone. Venus meets up with her mythic lover Mars in the sensual sign of Virgo for their third rendezvous this year. Jupiter, standing close by, amplifies the practical aesthetics of their combined energy. We attend to the daily matters of relationship. If we can make our lives work, love is enhanced. Go beyond criticism and perfectionism to focus on what is going right, rather than what is going wrong.
Tuesday, November 3 A last quarter Moon urges awareness of deep, inarticulate urges that we seek to express in some way. Continue to listen to your body. Perhaps it wants to dance or walk in the deep, dark woods, reveling in the stark mystery of the season. When the Moon goes VoC at 7:46pm, we are vibrating and sparkling with new revelations like crystalline snowflakes.
Wednesday, November 4 An all day Void of Course Moon leaves an open field of energy to play in. This could be a magical day, shimmering with synchronicities and serendipities, wide with transparent windows into new perspectives and new worlds. I wonder what can happen. Probably not the usual routine or the same old-same old. The Moon enters Nature-based Virgo at 8:22pm to bring us back to Earth. This sign is so underrated in its simplicity. Remember Shaker Elder Joseph’s song: “’Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free, ‘tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. And when we find ourselves in the place just right, ‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed. To turn, turn will be our delight, Till by turning, turning we come ‘round right.”
Thursday, November 5 Our attention is back to the tasks at hand, likely with a different attitude. Let’s be grateful for the small, tangible delights of our day-to-day lives. Be the agent of special moments for others. Such gifts have ripple effects beyond our comprehension. Attend to the temple of your body with reverence and appreciation. Perhaps some yoga, a massage or a hot tub is in order.
Friday, November 6 A great deal can be done today, especially this morning, that is really worth doing, supported by imagination, natural talents, positive attitude and tried and true techniques and methods applied in appropriate measures. It feels so rewarding to do a good job, even in the little things. It’s one of those simple, Virgo pleasures that carry us through the day and into a night of nocturnal delights. This whole weekend can be quite lovely for lovers.
Saturday, November 7 The Moon goes Void of Course at 6:47am, with a lingering kiss from Venus to send it into Libra at 9:14am. It’s a lovely day to spend with ones you love, even if you are cleaning the house or attending to projects. All in the name of beautifying and making lives more pleasing. There is a theme in the air of getting things done, with cooperation and good will. It’s more important the quality of energy we put into doing something—as in no bad moods or criticism—than doing it just right (although “perfect” feels good too). Let’s make the best of the day, get the job done and enjoy doing it.
Sunday, November 8 Venus enters Libra at 9:31am, continuing and enhancing yesterday’s themes of cooperation and consideration. Things can get a bit bumpy, grumpy and challenging as the day goes on. Anyone who is overly accommodating others, may bubble
over with resentment. Issues of fairness and justice are on the table, globally as well as personally. Sometimes we just can’t be nice. Some people may take this to extremes. On another note, life-changing decisions can be made, again globally as well as personally. By the time the Moon goes Void of Course at 8:42pm, irrevocable changes are in play.
Monday, November 9 The Moon is VoC all day, with repercussions from yesterday’s developments rippling through our systems. Conversations are a’twittering and a’buzz about it all—you guessed it—globally and locally. What does this mean to you? The Moon enters deep, dark, alchemical Scorpio at 10:02pm for some serious dreamtime investigations.
Tuesday, November 10 Important news begins the day, as further developments surface. Open your mind and imagination what is possible. Opportunities can lead to positive growth. Don’t believe everything you hear, but do consider what is true for you. Your body signals are spot on. Calm, anxious, stressed, needing rest? Listen, consider basic priorities and attend to what needs to be done.
Wednesday, November 11 NEW MOON at 11:47am CST, 19 Scorpio The Moon makes a series of positive planetary connections through the morning, leading up to the mid-day inauguration of a new lunar cycle. Mercury accompanies the New Moon, indicating deep considerations and research over the next two weeks of the waxing moon. Some of the best insights come from dreams and spiritual realms, with healing import. Think of a snake shedding its outworn skin. Be gentle, we can’t force the process. As we share our perceptions we find common ground beyond manmade boundaries. Universal truths prevail.
Thursday, November 12 A Void of Course Moon at 8:45am shortly ends as it moves into Sagittarius at 9:14am. No time to waste as we focus intently on worthy goals. Mars enters Libra at 3:41pm, putting action to words and implementing agreements. It is past time for objections, though some will continue to argue.
Friday, November 13 Friday the 13th is a Woman-Power day, NOT a bad luck day. Give the goddess due respect. Our basic question remains: what is truth? As the poet Keats reminds us: “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” The Moon goes Void of Course at 9:18pm, leaving us with this great question. Take time to contemplate something you find beautiful. Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 41

Friday, November 20
On another long VoC Moon day, the question of reality arises. Can we trust the evidence of our senses? Can we trust our intuition, our feelings? What if those two levels of perception don’t agree? All this offers yet more aspects to consider in relation to what we believe is true. We may have new answers to that query by the time the Moon goes into Capricorn at 6:21pm, and then what do we do?
An all-day Moon in Pisces tends to increase levels of sensitivity. That is never truer than today, with the psychic internet on high buzz and our attunement to energy fields being amplified. Best to spend some time with Nature and unplug for at least a while after the work day. Those who are too wired and ungrounded may make silly, stupid or even nasty bloopers, or otherwise offend others, whether consciously or unconsciously. Mercury enters fiery Sagittarius at 1:44pm, spilling hasty words. That sword of truth can be sharp. Do you ever find you have to apologize for your behavior, even if you’re “right”? This can be a make-it-orbreak-it night for relationships—not your typical romantic date night.
Sunday, November 15 Things may be tentative and a bit uncomfortable at times today, heading into the Moon’s evening meet-up with Pluto and the overnight challenge from Uranus. Not everyone will have a full night’s sleep. The main action might be on the other side of the world.
Monday, November 16 Positive developments unfold as the day goes on. We find our way forward, step-by-step, feeling where our feet land. Putting our heads and experience together we can find workable solutions. See what you can accomplish by the time the Moon goes Void of Course at 2:53pm, then take time to review, air your plans and develop further strategies.
Tuesday, November 17 The Moon enters air sign Aquarius at 1:24am, helping us detach from the intensity and get some sleep. We start the day with a broad overview and fresh perspective. Pay special attention to ideas that arise around 9am, clear intimations from deep inside. Trust your feelings, without needing to understand rationally. The Leonids meteor showers are a special celestial treat tonight. Watch the show if you can, best after midnight.
Wednesday, November 18 A subtle shift in the field may have us wondering and musing, as Neptune turns ever so slowly forward. A wave is heading to shore. Can you feel it? This shift affects collective trends and styles, public opinion and mood. Take it easy. Ground yourself if you feel any anxiety. Take into account it may not be your personal anxiety, since our shared fields are very permeable these days. You don’t need to take it on.
Thursday, November 19 A short Void of Course from 2:19am shifts into Pisces at 6:21am, imposing on our dreamtime, for some rare perceptions. Dreams rarely lend themselves to clear interpretation, but do let impressions and images linger for some meaningful insights. Clear any potential nightmarish leftovers with morning exercise and a good breakfast. This is likely to be a challenging day. You’ll need to start out as solid, strong and clear-headed as possible. Let’s be very kind to each other. We’re all in this together. 42 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
Saturday, November 21 The Moon is VoC at 7:23am, with lingering dreams on a Saturday that may start out lazy. That doesn’t last long. Entering impulsive Aries at 9:12am, the Moon clearly gets the day going, proliferating exciting ideas and clarifying goals. We are motivated! Keep others informed, or you may be in trouble later in the day. Still, one has to do what one has to do. SAGITTARIUS, the ARCHER
Sunday, November 22 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, enthusiastic Sagittarians! The Sun enters this sporting sign at 9:26am, ramping up the energy and moving things along. Think wild horses galloping through wild country or along the seashore, like that great scene in Black Beauty. This freedom-loving sign may want a travel buddy to hike the back country or head into adventure—or not. Don’t be offended if your independent Sagittarian friend is off and running on personal trails. Saggies need to know they are free to roam, to be on their own to make fresh discoveries and let their imaginations roam. When the Moon goes Void of Course at 1:16pm, this may be just what we all need. Who knows what we may discover when we are open to inspiration, with no expectations?
Monday, November 23 The Moon enters Taurus at 10:26am, bringing our energies right back to Earth. Any of us who didn’t take advantage of the weekend’s call to adventure may be a bit in the doldrums, but we get another chance later this afternoon, when something or someone may take us by surprise. Maybe you’re the one shaking things up, sending roses or serenading someone special. Don’t take other people for granted today, especially loved ones—and don’t let them take you for granted either! Gestures of love spice things up and make our hearts sparkle. Hugs and kisses are good, too.
Tuesday, November 24 With an all-day Moon in persistent Taurus, and planets in the two other earth signs, we can get a LOT done today. Focus your energy and maintain your attention on the goal, with your to-do
list in mind and your eye on the job in front of you. That list will have most, if not all, items checked off by the end of the day. Make one of them something to do with a long term goal. Hang up your work hat by 7:26pm, when the Moon goes Void of Course, with a sensation of day well spent.
support. By the time the Moon enters Leo at 6:47pm, we may have resolved something and gained clarity on the path ahead, as in “This is what I’m going to do.”
Wednesday, November 25
Now do it! No use procrastinating when the Moon is in a fire sign. Use the momentum and confidence at this beginning of a new week begins. Stoke your creative juices and take heart that possibilities abound. They start showing up today, and even more so tomorrow as December begins. Aim that Sagittarian arrow toward your shining star.
Monday, November 30
FULL MOON at 4:44pm CST, 3 Sagittarius-GEMINI Just in time for Thanksgiving, the Moon gives us its highest, brightest light. Also, once it moves into Gemini at 11:15am, it amplifies a square dance of planets that can be quite distracting and disorienting. We’re back to questions and conundrums about reality. Family matters may need attention, with potential disagreements or resistance to necessary pre-holiday discussions. Let go of anxieties so you can get a good night’s sleep.
Thursday, November 26 It may be best to eat dinner without politics on the table. Differing belief systems create static. Invite all prayers for thanks giving to the table. Forgiveness and compassion, along with giving thanks, go well with pumpkin and pecan pies, or any after dinner aperatif. The Moon is Void of Course at 9:35pm, by which time harmony may again reign.

Friday, November 27 A slow morning gives a smooth start to the day. Give your list a quick check, but be open to spontaneity this morning. Do what comes naturally. The Moon moves into its strong sign, Cancer, at 1:27pm. Take it easy and keep the smooth flow going. Keep the home fires burning bright and give yourself time to quietly contemplate all that has been happening—which feels like way more than usual. We don’t get many of these quiet moments these days, unless we take care to do so. When you are centered, you’ll be more ready to respond with your best to the challenge for change that tomorrow brings.

Saturday, November 28 A bit of a dicey day, as the extra sensitive Cancer Moon faces some strong-armed planetary players. Action is required, but not the knee-jerk type. What is most needed? How are you making room for change in your life? The necessity becomes apparent today, personally and globally. If it comes as a quiet voice for you, show you are ready and willing by at least cleaning out closets, doing volunteer service, or adopting a rescue animal (if one will be welcome and cared for).

Can We Save All By Saving Half? by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT On a recent trip to Georgia, I noticed how much land is for sale, being developed, or was developed with obvious new construction. The recovery of our economy has fueled massive growth in the housing and development economy. This has created a dynamic in our communities where land has become a commodity to sell and develop. Many people treat land as an inheritance to sell off, such as the case of millions of acres of farmland that once belonged to the small scale farmer, whose descendants do not go into the farming industry and have little interest in managing the land for farming. So much so in fact that “there are 2 million fewer owners of U.S. agricultural familyowned farmland now than in 1945,” according to the US Census, in May of 1993. According to a recent report created by the American Farmland Trust, we lose nearly 50 acres of farmland every hour to development. In a country that feeds much of the world through the food we grow, it seems very shortsighted. This “land lust” has also impacted the horse industry, reducing the number of farms where people can own horses, access to riding stables for learning, and diminishing recreational sites for trail-riding. This phenomenon is not exclusive to our country, or just to land. We are losing the land that supports the food we eat, we lose the land that grows the trees that provide our breathable atmosphere, and most of all we are losing species of plants and animals we have yet to discover. We are losing the precious biodiversity that creates the delicate ecological balance on our earth.
In his book titled The Future of Life (2002), he noted that just 10 percent of the Earth’s land surface was protected. This small percentage, according to Wilson, is not enough to save more than a modest fraction of wild species. This also fails to protect the world’s most diverse and least explored areas of the planet’s oceans. In his keynote speech at the “Science for Parks, Parks for Science: The Next Century” Conference at UC Berkeley this past March, he reiterated the short-sightedness that causes the nation’s leaders not to act in a way that values and recognizes the importance of biodiversity as it relates to the survival of our species.
A pioneering scientist named Edward O. Wilson has proposed a radical idea; to protect half the land on our earth to save us all. Mr. Wilson should know, as he is the leading expert on biodiversity. His long tenure studying the interdependence of all species has formed the foundation for his over 31 books on the subject of the human/nature connection. Wilson has also been a pioneer in spearheading efforts to preserve and protect the biodiversity of the planet. In his ground-breaking book, Biophilia (1984), he talks about how a human’s attraction to nature has more to do with a genetic predisposition to connect and be a part of nature, rather than our awe in the beauty of the world around us. On some level, we know that we are OF this earth not just living on it. We know on some deep soulful level that we are all interconnected, and the importance of living in concert with the biorythms of the earth. This concept of biophilia goes further than that, to say that each species is attracted to specific areas on the planet that contain the correct geography, climate, and ecology for its survival and proliferation.
In his newest book due out in 2016, Half-Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life, he believes that we can move from the current 10% of protected areas to a global 50% in a reasonable amount of time to prevent the extinction of the human race. He imparts us with a strategy that begins with education. We must teach our students about the importance of biodiversity and interdependence of all species. We need to motivate and support the efforts of our national parks systems, to increase their holding of protected lands, and incorporate oceans into their protection. This would involve targeting the most biodiverse areas that currently have no protection, including the Gulf Coast, and the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta national park unit, which includes the Red Hills; the largest number of turtle species of anywhere in the world. We need to make concessions for those living in protected lands, and impart environmentally sound practices to our urban planning, keeping in mind the number of acres of farmland needed to grow food that can support the area’s population. He also stresses the importance of cataloging and identifying as many new species as we can. Currently we identify about 18,000 new species
44 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
According to his work and the work of other theorists, there have been five previous extinction events; the last one occuring with the extinction of the dinosaurs. It took close to four million years for the world to recover from that event and evolve to where we are now. Current climate and ecological indicators point toward a sixth extinction event in the making, and it may have already started. There are efforts being made to combat global warming, and the escalation of the destruction of the most sensitive and biodiverse regions, such as the rainforest, yet not enough to make an impact. In Wilson’s Conference address and his popular TED talks, he believes that if we put aside 50% of the world’s land and oceans, and protect not just on paper but in practice, then we have a chance.
each year. This means it would take us until the 23rd century to identify what is left to be discovered. Thanks to the work of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, things are starting to move forward to implement those strategies, including the creation of citizen action groups, and the National Park Service Biodiversity Youth Ambassador Program. This program brings together young leaders and involves them in the conservation of our national parks. They have also created the Collaborative Storytelling Project (Inspired by Nature). This project involves collecting stories about our connection to nature and how it inspires us. This column has been an action to that end; to tell the story about how nature, specifically horses, have impacted the lives of those in the community. It is through this connection that we cultivate a compassion and ultimately the altruistic desire to protect the earth on which we are merely guests. We have seen countless movies about the postapocolyptic life; what the life of a human is like after we have destroyed the world, and almost all life on the planet. The picture is very bleak; nothing but anarchy, deserts, irradiated water, cannabalism, you’ve seen it all. Wilson gives us hope; it doesn’t have to turn out that way. Let’s write a different ending for our species. Let’s not go out like the greedy parasite, but instead let’s evolve to make better choices and become our greatest potential. Let’s face it; Earth will survive even if we don’t. It doesn’t need us. The comedian George Carlin had a great perspective, “The planet is fine…compared with the people, the planet is doin’ great. It’s been here over four billion years . . . The planet isn’t goin’ anywhere, folks. We are! We’re goin’ away... and we won’t leave much of a trace. Thank God for that. Nothing left. Maybe a little Styrofoam.” For the first time we have a real strategy that we can move towards, save half to save all. Tarot:
CITY LIFE & THE FORTUNE-TELLER IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE
by Vincent Pitisci
The earliest records of tarot card reading come from eighteenthcentury Europe. By understanding the common people of that era and the kind of work available at that time, we can get a better picture of the typical fortune-teller of that period as well. Shopkeepers and artisans were at the upper end of income and comfort. These included upholsterers, coach painters, joiners, and watch finishers, to name a few. But the jobs and lives of those at the lower end of the working class were deplorable at best. Some occupations are now forgotten or have barely been recorded at all. One example is a “pure-finder,” old women who walked the streets collecting dog waste which they then sold to tanneries for a few pence a bucket. If you think you’ve got it rough, think again! Occupational diseases abound in the eighteenth century. Sawyers became blind at an early age, exposed to so much sawdust that it literally damaged their eyes. Metal founders died from lead poisoning. Glassblowers’ lungs collapsed from silicosis. Hairdressers were susceptible to lung disease from breathing the mineral powder needed to whiten wigs. Hatters went mad from using mercury nitrate to finish fine felt hats. Tailors became blind from eyestrain. Tailors of the military were at the highest risk, for the red thread used for the red coats of the English uniforms was the hardest to see in the poor lighting conditions of the times. Prostitution and crime was high. The helpless begged, and thieves stole what they could. One could be hung for simply poaching a rabbit, and the gallows were always full. Some of the slang terms for those hung for a crime were to dance upon nothing, the morning drop, to take a leap in the dark, to loll your tongue out at the company, or, because of the strangling sounds a person makes while hanging, to cry cockles. The Industrial Revolution, which began in Great Britain around 1760, turned a blind eye to young labor. Orphaned children were forced to work in unhealthy, cruel conditions and endure physical, mental, and emotional abuse for long hours without rest. Some little ones would continue moving their hands in their sleep as if they were still working on the job. The Industrial Revolution was also the time of the card reader. If you were fortunate enough to own a deck of Tarot cards, you could mystify people with their magical images and your words of hope and destiny. I imagine older women were the main card readers of the time. Maybe a pure-finder by day and a card reader by night! If I had been a card reader in those days, I would’ve wanted to protect myself and my cards with an air of mystical powers. I 46 Conscious Community -NOVEMBER 2015
would want to appear to be able to curse those who threatened to take what little money I had or, worse yet, to rob me of my cards. I would also have wanted to give the impression that only I could tap the power of my cards, thus assuring that no one would try to take them from me. Yes, if I had been a card reader in the eighteenth century, I would’ve wanted to appear as if I had magical powers that could read your mind and curse your very soul if I chose to. In times like those, what other protection would a card reader have? The Power of a Picture Sometimes I think we take the images of the Tarot too seriously. And the large variety of imagery appearing on the different Tarot decks available today makes it quite challenging to find consistency. This can lead us to want to restrict ourselves to using one particular style of deck, such as the THOTH or the RIDER WAITE. Both are classic Tarot decks with wonderful imagery, but they are quite different from each other in the style of the images and the meanings they assign to each card. Which is right? Which is wrong? Actually, both are very good decks, and both can see into a question deeply. And there are hundreds of other wonderful Tarot decks that can do so just as well. One is not better than the other. They all work. The classic symbolism shown in the cards can bring about some insight, and take on a broader, yet less direct, meaning to our everyday questions and concerns. Thus, I feel it best to look for meaning in the imagery in ways that can be directed specifically to one’s question. Let’s ask the cards a question to see how much we can find with just one card’s imagery. The Tarot cards can be read in many ways—by relying on definitions, by word associations, or by the rich images themselves. In the example below, we are using just the image of the card itself, without resorting to classic meanings to find answers. Question: “Should I open a restaurant? And if so, what type and where?” We will use one tarot card to see what ideas it can tell us. After shuffling, the card we draw is the Hermit, #9 of the Major Arcana. You might wonder how the Hermit card can help with this question. The trick is, we have to give him a chance. The Hermit
holds a lantern like a beacon. It reminds me of the neon marquee sign of a 24-hour diner off an expressway. The Hermit is wearing heavy garments. Is it cold where he is? Could the diner be in the colder, northern part of the country—Minnesota, upper Wisconsin or Michigan? The Hermit holds a wooden staff, which could also be a hint as to the diner’s location. Maybe it is near a national forest, a lumberyard, or somewhere else involving wood. Answer Found: The Hermit tells me to look for a 24-hour diner with a big marquee sign for sale off a major expressway near a paper mill in the colder states of perhaps Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan.
