PUBLISHER’S LETTER November is a special month for me because it makes me stop and reflect on, and celebrate my life. The first event that helps me reflect on my life is on November 1st, when I celebrate Wszystkich Swietych (All Saints Day). It is a Polish holiday, when everyone goes to the cemetery and lights candles to remember families and friends who passed away. This holiday makes me reflect on life, and ask myself, “am I at this moment in a place where I want to be? Am I happy? Why am I doing what I do?” Answers to those questions have helped me trust that I am on my spiritual road. Also, the All Saints celebration reminds me that all of the people who passed away are happy on the other side, and cheering for us to live inspired and joy-filled lives. The second holiday that I celebrate in November is Thanksgiving. I have only been celebrating this for 14 years, and it gives me so much to be thankful for. I am grateful that I am here, and I am publishing and leading the Conscious Community Magazine, with many awesome and talented people. I am grateful for the world, and all the changes and challenges that are coming for us with the upcoming election on November 8th. Even though Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump represent two totally different ways of running the country, I hope, and believe that we are ready for it. From a spiritual perspective, challenges bring new opportunities for us to grow as people, a community, and country. Also, there are many articles and columns in this issue that will inspire you to ask your soul some questions: “Where would you have me go? What would you have me say? What would you have me do?” For more about those questions, and meeting Eckhart Tolle for the first time, read Theresa Puskar’s All About Town column; “Living a Life of Presence.” Do you know the feeling when you do something that really brings you real happiness, that no money can buy? Alan Cohen writes about this joy, and blessings that made Meryl Streep leave her first Oscar award in the ladies’ room at the Academy Awards. I invite you to read the whole issue, and check out our website; I know that everyone can find something inspiring to read. Enjoy! P.S. Don’t forget to vote on November 8th! The Best,
Kasia Szumal

Living a Life of Presence
October 1-2, 2016 Eckhart Tolle Foundation, Huntington Beach CA
ALL ABOUT TOWN
By: Theresa Puskar
“The world is not here to make me happy. It is here to make me conscious…then I become happy!” – Eckhart Tolle I recently visited California to seek the assistance of a remarkable Neuro Emotional Technique practitioner, Dr. Ray Gin. While I was there, I also attended a seminar, Living a Life of Presence hosted by the Eckhart Tolle Foundation. While I was grateful for the exceptional healing I received from Dr. Gin, I also felt immense gratitude for the workshop. I know that it too had a profound effect on me and my wellbeing. There were several wonderful inspirational speakers at the event: Eckhart Tolle, Kim Eng, Jack Kornfield, Elizabeth Lesser and David Wilcox, Susan Stiffelman, Steve Taylor, Marianne Williamson, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Daniel Siegel, and Brother David Steindl-Rast. While I thought that the highlight of the seminar was to see Eckhart live and in person, I ultimately learned that inspiration came from a variety of other channels as well, particularly Marianne Williamson.
our egos in action, and laugh as we noted our fallibility and humanness. There were so many truisms and powerful messages that Eckhart shared, it was difficult to keep up with them all. Here are a few golden nuggets of wisdom he shared that impacted me the most:
Eckhart Tolle
There were two themes that really resonated for me throughout the weekend. The first was to commit myself to greater trust, and the second was to focus my intentions on service. While each speaker supported these messages, Eckhart and Marianne really drove the messages home.
“I am not upset about this situation. I am upset about what my mind is saying about the situation. When I realize that situations are not real, I will not react!” – Eckhart Tolle This particular quote really spoke to the part of me that is ultra-reactive, and takes everything in life so personally. While my ego claims that the situations I find myself in are the cause of my suffering, if I am truly honest with myself, I see that my mind is the real issue. One of the speakers said that a truly enlightened soul is always very humorous. What was most remarkable about Eckhart is that his lessons were always shared with great humor. I felt deeply blessed to have an opportunity to be in his presence, and to share many huge belly laughs with him. On several occasions he roleplayed the ego, and in doing so modeled its absolute absurdity! What I noted is that the humor came from our ability to witness

“Cessation of compulsive thinking is awakening. One of the quickest ways to cessation is letting go of resistance to the present moment.” “Nothing you manifest will satisfy you unless you realize who you are.” “To make the present moment my friend is to always say ‘Yes’ to everything that arises within it.” “Take note of when you are having a dysfunctional relationship with the present. For example, when you are complaining, note that it is the ego judging negatively.”
Eckhart encouraged us to “Get out of our prison of continuous conception of things. We need to find the space and be the space.” He shared several practices to assist us on our journeys towards awakening. Two that were most poignant for me were to: 1) Invite cessation of thought by inviting perceptions without thinking. Walk, eat, and sit consciously – observing or experiencing without labeling. 2) Spare 10 seconds when getting into the car. Sit in stillness before turning on the ignition. Don’t count. Simply look out the window, note the sky, feel the steering wheel. Use your senses to fully experience the moment.
This is such a powerful prayer, and I look forward to ending my daily meditations with it. For as I have been sitting in silence and scanning my tight, fear-filled body, I realize that so much of the time, many of my thoughts are fear-based. I have allowed my ego to become the driver and take the wheel of my life. However, in doing so, I realize that I have lost my trust in the magic and mystery that comes in the divine plan. I need to surrender my ego, and focus on how I might best serve the world. There is such liberation and ease that comes from surrendering to spirit, and I very much look forward to focusing on building trust and service into my heart’s song.
“Make yourself available while you are still a mess!” - Marianne Williamson
“Live life trusting in it, and choose love.” – Brother David Steindl-Rast The final speaker of the event was Brother David Steindl-Rast. An extremely holy, compassionate, and humble man, his presence is very palpable. In its simplicity, his message, “Live life trusting in it, and choose love” really encapsulated all that I learned over the weekend. I feel so deeply blessed and privileged to have spent time with these remarkable spiritual teachers, and I look forward to putting their lessons into practice in my life. I hope you will join me in doing so.
Marianne Williamson & Theresa Puskar During my tenure as an audio producer with Nightingale-Conant, I had the distinct pleasure of producing two audio programs with Marianne Williamson. She is a remarkable woman. In fact, I’ll never forget the time I spent working with her. Her forthrightness, honesty, and frankness were an inspiration, and vastly changed the course of my life. Because I had worked so closely with her in the past, while I was excited to hear her again, I didn’t expect anything new. That must have been my ego playing tricks, because Marianne’s lecture deeply impacted me; in fact, she had me in tears.
“When the ego weeps for what it has lost, the spirit rejoices for what it has found.” – Sufi saying I am going through some major transitions in my life, and I must admit that my ego has been doing its fair share of weeping. When this quote was shared at the seminar, I took a deep relaxing breath, and settled in. I forgot that while my ego is acting out its dramatic “mess,” my spirit is rejoicing. With each prick of the ego, its deflation creates room for spiritual advancement and deeper understanding. Another message Marianne shared that really struck a chord was to:
Brother David Steindl-Rast Theresa Puskar, our All About Town contributor, is a writer, trainer, speaker, and inspirational audiobook producer. She is the author of The Terri Series – seven children’s books that focus on bullying, honoring diversity, celebrating creativity, non-judgment of emotions, finding alternatives to technology-based entertainment, discovering a non-judgmental God, and overcoming fears. She has also recorded a powerful experiential audio program, How to De-Clutter Your Mind and Live a Heart-Centered Life. To place an order or learn more, log onto her website, theresapuskar.com.

How to Get Paid Big Time for Your Creations FROM THE HEART
Meryl Streep is considered by many to be the world’s greatest living actress. To date she has garnered 322 Best or Supporting Actress nominations, and 164 wins, including three Academy Awards, and eight Golden Globes. Her first Oscar came in 1979 for her Best Supporting Actress role in Kramer vs. Kramer. During the awards ceremony Streep went to the ladies’ room, and left the coveted gold statue on the toilet. For her, acting was the real gold; the trophy it led to was an afterthought. Truly creative people are more interested in the process of creating than its side effects. They do not create in order to get something else. The joy of creating is reward enough. Awards and accolades are not the goal; they are the byproducts of the goal. To dwell in the sacred state of creation is heaven; trying to manage the results is hell. Never deny or withhold your creative gifts. They will pay off first in spirit, and then in the world. When you know you deserve to be paid for your creative gifts and service, you will be. Karen Drucker is a talented career musician who grew weary of playing for corporate conferences, weddings, and bar mitzvahs. After many years of performing pop tunes, she longed to launch out on her own, write original songs on uplifting themes, and perform for people who were actually listening. So Karen decided to take a leap of faith, and establish a career as a recording and concert artist for audiences attracted to music that nourishes the spirit.
12 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
By: Alan Cohen
Initially Karen’s venture was shaky. It wasn’t easy to establish a new career in a field less popular than mass music. She got a few gigs, but there was more space between them than she had hoped, and the income was meager. One day Karen found a musician’s magazine she wanted to subscribe to. On the subscription page she found two rates offered: (1) Regular, and (2) a discounted rate called Starving Artist. Karen started to check the Starving Artist box, then caught herself. Wait a minute, she thought. Do I really want to affirm that I am a starving artist? Karen’s training in new thought had taught her that she would become whatever she thought about herself, and especially how she described herself. She did not want to identify herself as a starving artist who could not afford the regular subscription rate. So she took another leap of faith, checked the Regular box, and paid the higher fee. Within a few days, Karen received a wealth of invitations to perform, and checks in the mail. Her affirmation of herself as a successful artist became a reality. When she purposely checked the box that represented her ideal self rather than her feared self, that is the person she became. Karen went on to become an extremely successful performer for new thought audiences, traveling around the world, earning an excellent income, and receiving awards for her original music; and now she is a well-fed artist.
It is very common for artists of all kinds to think and speak of themselves as starving artists. They do not realize the great disservice they do to themselves and their peers by affirming this lackful condition. Belief systems are reinforced by the spoken word and by agreement. What you call yourself, you become. Take care—great care—to never define yourself or your condition as less than you would like it to be. Always speak of yourself and your work in terms of the ideal conditions you wish to create, and they will follow. There are many ways you can and will be paid for your creativity, some that go far beyond money. At age 61, Andy Mackie had gone through nine heart surgeries, and was taking 15 medications. He was tired of the surgeries, medications, and side effects. So he decided to just enjoy his life, even if his time was short. He quit taking the medications, took the $600 per month he was spending on the pills, bought 300 harmonicas, went into schools to teach children how to play them, and waited to die. When he didn’t die, he did the same thing the next month, and the next. He forgot about dying, and started to live. Andy went on like this for years, using his social security checks to purchase more and more musical instruments, including guitars and drumsticks. Ten years later Mackie was still alive, and had used his money previously devoted to medicine to purchase over 20,000 harmonicas, and 5,500 drumsticks! When he finally left this world, though his physical heart was worn out, his spiritual heart was fully alive. Creativity brings life and rewards you on all levels. You can assess your mental and emotional health by the degree of creativity in which you are engaged. Are you expanding and growing? Are you launching into uncharted territory? Do you welcome challenge and change as opportunities to advance? Be true to your creativity, and life will take care of you in wondrous and miraculous ways. Struggling to Be Well in a High-Tech World By: Phyllis Light, Ph.D. How many of you wrestle with allergies, colds, fatigue, headaches, eyestrain, or even more serious immune system disorders, like cancer, Hashimoto’s, or rheumatoid arthritis? Most of you have no clue what you are up against, in our high-tech world. You just know that it’s “normal” to carry a cell phone in your purse or pants pocket, and sit in front of your computer screen or mobile device daily, at work and at home. You connect your computers and mobile devices to a WiFi network, which broadcasts life-damaging frequencies throughout your offices and homes, and then you watch HDTV at night, bathing in all the digital frequencies the TV is emitting. Your sleep cycle is often disturbed, so you take sleeping pills in order to be able to sleep. And all this is natural? It is “normal” and a common part of modern-day life, but it is anything but “natural.” What is the problem here? The problem is that we are both energetic and physical beings. That is, we have an energy field surrounding our physical body that is actually the blueprint for the body. When the energy field gets damaged, the physical body sustains damage as well. If we could keep our energy field healthy, then the physical body would stay healthy too.
14 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
What creates “ill health” of our energy field? The unnatural and life-damaging electromagnetic fields and frequencies that blanket our planet are responsible, to a great degree, for the ill health of our energy field. They fill the space in which we live and breathe, bombarding our energy field to the tune of “300,000 times per minute” in most metropolitan areas. The human energy field was not designed to withstand such a continuous onslaught of disruptive energies. Normally, as humans, we are “self-repairing” in our makeup. That is, when we cut ourselves, the wound will normally scab over and heal itself within a short period of time. When our energy field sustains a moment of damage, it, too, will then heal itself within a short period of time. Before 1975, when HBO and Cinemax started broadcasting from the skies, we would get hit with maybe 40 frequencies per day, from our three television stations and small handful of radio stations. When a frequency would hit us, our energy field would wobble, dysfunction for a moment, and then would right itself, once the frequency went away. Then, we wouldn’t get hit for another half hour or so, thus giving us the space and time we needed to repair ourselves after each hit. This “self-repairing” function happens naturally and automatically. It’s not something we have to think about or put our attention on.
Fast-forward to our world today, where the air is so jam-packed with frequencies, we are getting hit constantly, non-stop. So each time our energy field tries to repair itself, it gets hit again, and again, and never gets the space and time it needs to allow this self-repairing mechanism to work effectively. So, our energy field gets weakened over time. Since the energy field is the blueprint for the physical body, the body, too, gets weaker with time. And this ever-increasing weakness shows up in different ways for different people. For many, it starts with a weakened immune system. The immune system actually goes into “overdrive” trying to fight off all the frequencies, but it is unable to do so, and just tires itself out in the process. This is why you are seeing the rise of immune system disorders as technology advances. When many of us grew up, we ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. Now, many kids are allergic to peanuts, because of their weakened immune system, a function of growing up in a frequency-laden world. And people think that having allergies is “normal” and just a part of everyday life. Again, it is NOT normal, and comes from all these hits we’re taking from the negative frequencies that bombard us daily. Yet, these frequencies are invisible. So, for most people, why do something about a situation that doesn’t SEEM to be a problem? I mean, if you can’t see the frequencies hitting you, then it’s easy to ignore the fact that they are. However, it has gotten to the point where people are truly struggling to be well, and one can’t keep ignoring the energetic downside of all that is taking place on the planet today. We are all living with undue stress from the bombardment of the damaging frequencies in our world. Yet, life can be more peaceful. We can be healthy and enjoy a sense of aliveness and well-being. It may take some effort to transform the quality of your life, but it is an effort well-worth making.

Don’t Cry Because It’s Over. Smile Because It Happened. THE SHARED HEART: HEARTFULNESS By: Joyce and Barry Vissell
Those nine words by the late Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss), one of our country’s favorite storytellers, contain so much wisdom. They apply to many different aspects of life, and I would like to focus on relationships. Most of us are going to have relationships end at some point in our lives, whether they’re marriages, partners, friends, relatives, or any other type of relationship. People leave, or die, and it hurts. What to do with the hurt? A person we know had a relationship end in a hurtful way. This individual is so hurt, and doesn’t know how to handle the pain of this situation. The feeling of rejection seems overwhelming. The other person has walked away and there’s no negotiation. For this person, it’s over, and there is no desire for contact. Many people are stuck in the feeling that “it’s over.” The way out of the pain is to remember the good, and feel grateful. The feeling of gratitude will open a door to your heart, and allow the feeling of love to enter. When a person ruminates on the details of the ending, they stay in the pain, and it can become worse with time. The best thing to do is to feel gratitude. Write

down the things you can appreciate about having been with this person; and sending the list to the person (if they’re still alive) can be very healing. In this way you are transitioning the relationship in a very conscious and loving way. If the person never responds to your letter and expression of gratitude, you have at least reached out. The expressed gratitude will free you to go on with your life, and even open up to a new relationship or friendship. There’s that great saying, “When one door closes, another door opens.” One of my very favorite stories is from the late Leo Buscaglia, who was my teacher at USC in 1971 when I was 25 years old. I was in his master’s degree course, and most of my classes were with him. He was beyond wonderful, and taught me many valuable lessons that I still cherish to this day. My favorite class was a non-credit class called, “LOVE 1A.” Anyone in the university could attend the class. About 50 students came each week. He was the only professor teaching this subject in a university in the United States. Those of us who chose to attend the class absolutely loved it. He was teaching us how to reach out and really love people in a heartfelt way.
to all of us, “Smile that it happened.” Acknowledging that we are beautiful, have much love to give, as well as expressing gratitude, c an b ring a person out of the pain of seeming rejection.

He had wonderful ideas and could back them up with great literature. His favorite book was The Little Prince. He had us practice appreciating people, seeing beauty in each other, expressing gratitude, and writing letters to our families with messages of love. There was such a beautiful energy in the room in each class, that I felt as if I could float, I felt so high and happy. He was the first person to acknowledge that my sensitivity was a beautiful thing, and that he appreciated that side of me very much. Until he spoke to me in that way, I had felt ashamed of my sensitive nature. He had a way of acknowledging his students and, sometimes, as in my case, he saw beauty and strength where others saw weakness. Those of us in the class were opening up so beautifully with his teachings. One day I had an appointment at his office at the university. While I waited for him, I couldn’t help but overhear the voices of three men that had come to meet with him before me. They spoke in loud, harsh voices, and told Leo that he couldn’t teach his love class anymore. They told him it was an embarrassment to the university, and he had to stop immediately; this was nonnegotiable. They walked out soon after that. I felt so sad for my beloved teacher; here he was giving of himself on his free time to teach this wonderful class, and it was rejected. He must feel so hurt. I walked into his office, and tried to think of how I might cheer him up. Indeed, he looked very sad; yet his words surprised me, “I feel so sad for those three men that were just here. I have so much love to give, and they don’t want it.” His sadness wasn’t for himself, but for those university officials. He saw what they were missing by rejecting what he had to offer. Shortly after that, Leo left the university. I don’t know if he was asked to leave, or if he just left. He went on to become one of the most popular speakers in the world, with crowds of over 10,000 people at each talk. He gave his love class to the world, and they received it with great enthusiasm. At one time five of his books were on The New York Times Best Sellers List simultaneously. Whenever I start to feel rejected by someone, I think of Leo and his words, “I feel so sad for them, as I have so much love to give.” I also think of Dr. Seuss’s advice

NOVEMBER…
Balance, Partnerships, Intuition, Mother Energy, Groups THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS By:: Elizabeth Summers As the falling leaves swirl around us, so does the multi-level energies of the Number Two and more importantly, the Number Eleven of November. This high-strung vibration of intuition can create some intense nervous energy in those that are very emotional and sensitive, even to the point of physical illnesses from worry. Ruling the subconscious, the Numbers Two and Eleven can bring on wild dreaming and restlessness which is not uncommon. These possible agitation energies can cause impatience in relationships that require a lot of balance, setting of boundaries, or negotiating situations into “win-win” through diplomacy. Therefore, it is not surprising that many “flare-ups” can occur around the Thanksgiving table! The Number Eleven is a Master Number taken on only by old souls of spirituality who have volunteered to come to the human with only one purpose---to serve as a spiritual messenger. However, to fit all this electrical energy into the “human shoes” can be quite a trick, so the human reverts to the lower energy of Two. Flipping back and forth energetically between Two and Eleven can become quite dizzying and confusing on occasion! One of the best solutions for this is to be around water; either living near ponds, streams, or oceans,

or jumping into Jacuzzis will calm this hyperactive static down to a more grounded level. In November, we move mid-month from the sign of Scorpio into the sign of Sagittarius. This can be a shock to many, as Saturn, the “Marine Corps Drill instructor” of the Universe will now be sitting in the sign of Sagittarius until December 20, 2017. The word “Sagittarius” is Latin for “the archer,” and sure enough, Sagittarius souls will take aim at their goals mid-November, and intensify all efforts as it zooms into December. Don’t ask them to sit still too long, and as boredom sets in their favorite phrase just might be “I’m out of here!” Their quest for excitement, mixed with a little intrigue, can make them a force to be dealt with during the gentle energies of November. Planet Jupiter has now moved into Libra where it is happy! Although all signs will benefit from this move, Libras will definitely find abundance and opportunities filling their lives until October 2017. Jupiter’s effects are to expand our experiences, our knowledge, and our understanding. Jupiter represents optimism, growth, generosity, joy, and abundance.
Thanksgiving provides the perfect opportunity to serve others for all of us, especially the Number Two and the Number Eleven. This energy, which is fastidious, very detail oriented to a fault, sometimes can put all the details together for a wonderful event. Very hurt by criticism, be sure to “compliment the cook” on this special holiday, or Number Two energy will not be inviting you back! Relax, enjoy, and be peaceful in this rather slow-moving month. More importantly, be in gratitude mode for all the abundance that the wonderful month of November celebrates, and trust that “all is well.” Spiritually guiding clients since 1988, Elizabeth Summers provides practical information. Ancient Numerology interpretations, Astrology, and Tarot are used in all of her readings. Website: http://www.elizabethsummers.com. From a Tarot perspective, the Number Two is the High Priestess card, which brings in a need to listen to one’s intuition, especially when dealing with partnerships. The Number Eleven is the Justice card, requiring balance in partnerships that frequently have arrived from previous incarnations. Where the energy of Number One is assertive and aggressive, wanting to be the leader in all situations, Number Two says, “show me the way, and I will follow.” This quiet, supportive vibration, especially as a birthday Number, can get misinterpreted as weak, and thus get walked on like a doormat. Non-combative and easily led, this “people pleaser” can become codependent, needing to be snapped out of their victim energy in difficult personal relationships, especially in families. The Number Two is one of the “mother” indicators in Numerology. This feminine sensitive vibration needs to learn to be true to themselves, and speak up in their own defense. Setting boundaries, and saying the word “no” in many cases can be quite a challenge in corralling noisy children, or setting boundaries in relationships, but it must be done. The out-of-balance of Number Two is victimhood, but there are no victims in life, only inappropriate choices that have been made that need correction. The Numbers applied to the word “November” add to a total vibration of transition of 13/4 which is the Death card in Tarot. The old is passing away, and we are moving into a planning energy of nesting, prior to new growth and beginnings that come in the Spring.

Hope in THE midst of chaos WISDOM OF THE ANGELS
As this issue goes to press we are in the throes of one of the most heavily disputed political elections of all time. To say that these are tumultuous times would be an understatement! At every point in history, even during deeply tumultuous times, there are always those who THRIVE. I believe you can be one of those people. I believe we collectively, as the United States of America, can be those people.
By: Lori Daniel Falk
of how we will feel when we actually do have it. And then we must do things that put us in this same energetic state of being, thereby enabling us through the Law of Attraction to actually draw those things to us; to this country; and to our world.
Since I don’t want you to just take my word for it, I did what I do best … I asked the angels what we should do. My question to them was simple, “What can you tell us to give us HOPE?” Their answer was even simpler, especially for those of you who have been studying the Law of Attraction for any length of time; “Get clear about what you want, decide what you will and won’t accept in your life and the life of this country, and have absolute faith in a positive outcome.”
Well if it’s that easy, then pray tell (pun intended), why does it all seem so difficult? Once again the angels tell us, the answer is simple; “We are not seeing things clearly. We are buying into the illusion of what is going on all around us.” Rather than listening to the critics, naysayers and skeptics (i.e. the news media), and believing that the sky is falling, perhaps we should remember what is truth. The truth of the matter is that things aren’t really falling apart; rather they are changing, growing, and evolving into something so much grander and greater than anything we have ever known.
The angels reminded me that we have the power to resolve this situation. As co-creative spiritual beings, having a human experience, we need only remember who we really are, and put our power into action. We must get a crystal clear picture of what we’d like our world, and our lives, to look like. Then we must believe with all our heart and soul that we can have what it is we are wanting. In fact, we have to believe it so much that we can actually feel the excitement
Let’s look at an example of how this is playing out in our lives. And just for the sake of everyone’s sanity, I’m going to keep it off the subject of politics. Let’s look at the number of marriages that have ended in divorce in the past few decades. As we all know divorce rates have skyrocketed. And, as sad as that is, the reality is that this is just part of an evolutionary process. The old way of interacting in relationships was ego driven, instead of love based. If everything continued to flow effortlessly

in the old way of interacting with others, where would the impetus be to find a new and better way of being? The natural evolution of things often involves the old systems falling apart, to create room, and a reason, for something new. Keeping with this theme of a new way of being in relationship with another, the angels then remind us of the unique and blessed balance that occurs in each of us, when we

Vitamin C is Toxic Sludge in Your Skin Care Products By: Janet Thompson
Are you damaging your skin with toxic sludge and you don’t even realize it? Vitamin C is crucial for the synthesis of collagen, a key structural protein of the skin. Unfortunately, Vitamin C is extremely unstable and loses effectiveness when mixed with a liquid or serum. It immediately begins to degrade, and if the pH or emulsification of a formula is not stable, Vitamin C quickly oxidizes and loses its efficacy (up to 50% in 2-3 months). What are you left with? A potential oxidant – not an antioxidant! I love antioxidants, and you should too! Antioxidants are chemicals that interact with and neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are atoms or molecules with an unpaired electron. They are very chemically reactive, short-lived and are the culprits behind disease and cancer. Free radicals are on a mission to find and attach themselves to healthy cells. When they do, they do everything they can to turn the healthy cell into an unhealthy cell. Misery loves company, right?
30 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
Antioxidants are free radical scavengers; they are on a mission to seek and destroy free radicals. As a result, they stop the damage before it starts on a cellular level. This process is very important to our overall health and well-being, including our skin. We want Vitamin C to work WITH our bodies and skin harmoniously – not against them. Don’t be fooled by all the pretty bottles and high-priced marketing campaigns out there. The moisturizer or serum you just purchased that brags about containing Vitamin C was most likely packaged months ago, if not years, and stored in a hot warehouse waiting to be shipped to your local supplier. Oxidized Vitamin C can increase the formation of free radicals – exactly the opposite of what we’re trying to achieve. This is why we don’t want products that already contain Vitamin C.
So, how do you get the Vitamin C you need for your skin and make sure it’s potent and fresh? You mix it into your moisturizer just before you apply it to your skin. Applying topical Vitamin C to the skin is 20 times more effective than ingesting it. Simply applying Vitamin C daily for three days can achieve optimal levels of it in the skin. The key to being successful with this type of application is to use the correct form of Vitamin C. L-Ascorbic Acid is the natural form of Vitamin C and is readily absorbed into the skin. It’s typically found in a crystal or powder form and you only need to add a pinch to your moisturizer to benefit from its effectiveness. We offer a pharmaceutical grade Vitamin C (Vita-C Cocktail Mix) at the spa for $19.95 (1-oz. bottle) which will last you a long time. Topical Vitamin C is an amazing and effective way to boost collagen syntheses. It helps to keep your skin healthy and younger-looking. It’s an inexpensive fix that is an effective anti-aging cocktail for your skin. Give it a try – it won’t let you down and your skin will applaud your choice! GARDENING MATTERS By: Sue Odland
November is the time to turn towards hearth and home, a time to reflect on our recent summer gardens, and a time to give thanks to the gardeners of the community, who go beyond their own patches of green to bring the joy of gardening to others less fortunate. One dedicated group of volunteer gardeners from The University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners – DuPage County program used their passion and knowledge to create a remarkable, interactive “Secret Garden” to enhance the lives and wellbeing of the residents at The DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, IL. The volunteer gardeners, who devotedly work on this project each week, deeply believe in the importance of connecting people with nature, regardless of their physical challenges, or lack of mobility. The non-profit DuPage Convalescent Center (DPCC) provides skilled long-term care and rehabilitation to all who need its services, regardless of their ability to pay. Up to 360 people age 18-100 call this center home, as they face living with the challenges resulting from stroke, dementia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, head injuries, and many other debilitating diagnoses that require around the clock care.
32 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
Through a partnership between the Master Gardeners and the DPCC’s Foundation, the center’s commitment to enhance the residents’ lives through horticulture therapy was realized. Each Master Gardener in-training in the DuPage program is required to volunteer 60 hours of time each year, and Certified Master Gardeners must volunteer 30 hours of time to help local non-profit organizations further their mission of helping others learn to grow. Linda Kunesh, University of Illinois Extension - DuPage Master Gardener Team Leader, serves as manager of the center’s garden, while also assisting her own mother with her resident garden. This Master Gardeners’ volunteer project has received local, national, and international awards for its mission to enable special needs individuals to access gardening opportunities year ‘round. In the inviting Secret Garden, center residents in wheelchairs or walkers plant vegetables and flowers of their choice into their own accessible 2’x6’ raised garden bed with the help of a volunteer Master Gardener. Residents also attend weekly classes taught by Master Gardeners on a variety of gardening skills, including harvesting flowers to create floral gifts to give to residents who are ill. The remaining flowers are harvested, dried, and used throughout the winter for the center’s craft projects, offering all residents a touch of nature indoors.
The residents share their abundance of vegetables with visitors and staff through an in-house farmer’s market, and by donating excess produce to the People’s Resource Center Food Pantry. This past summer, they donated over 185 lbs of produce to help feed the hungry. Even with challenging issues of their own, the residents reached out to help neighbors in need. The Secret Garden also includes a hands-on sensory garden, and a vibrant rainbow garden, featuring an array of hues representing the colors of the rainbow, including red salvia, orange and yellow marigolds, geraniums, blue salvia, and Dusty Miller. The flowers and vegetables for planting were generously provided by The Bloomingdale Garden Club, The College of DuPage Horticulture Department, and Prosek’s Greenhouse. In addition, a covered garden pavilion with accessible benches was recently added to the garden space. The innovative benches easily convert from a seated bench, into an accessible table with room for a wheelchair on one side and traditional seating on the other, allowing families and friends to easily visit with residents. The gardeners hope to secure a donation to purchase additional benches to provide more pavilion seating. Residents report that growing their own gardens is a joy to experience, plus it offers them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Gerie Shaw, whose husband Ed is a resident gardener, said, “the garden is a family affair that benefits everyone, plus it gives residents something to look forward to each week.” Resident gardener Edward “Skip” Meyer said, “I gardened with my grandmother and mother when I was young, I’m happy to be able to continue the family tradition.” Through the committed hours of time, talent, and service of the volunteer Master Gardeners, this incredible green oasis has taken shape to enrich the lives of those who call the center home. During this quiet season of indoor time, let us follow this example and make a difference in the lives of others in our communities this year. To offer support to the Secret Garden project, or to sponsor a gift for a DPCC resident this holiday season, contact The DuPage Convalescent Center at 630-784-4267, or dupageco.org/Convalescent_Center. Sound Healing, Politics, and Subtle Activism SOUND MATTERS As we approach the end of this disappointing presidential campaign, it’s more frustrating than ever to see how alternative perspectives and proposals are ignored by the mass media. What other scandal may pop up at the last minute to change the trajectory? Will “Saturday Night Live” continue to be the way millions gain a fresh perspective on the campaign? Not surprisingly, I haven’t heard any candidate really speak about alternative/integrative health approaches (wellness medicine) to make our nation healthier, rather than to merely rely on ‘sickness’ medicine. How would the potential of sound healing and medicinal music fare under either candidate? What do you think? My Sound Health: The Music and Sounds That Make Us Whole (Harper & Row, 1985) was the first book by a major publisher to bring media and mainstream awareness to the proven benefits of certain music and sound healing tools for health and wellbeing. Studies were cited demonstrating beneficial physiological changes, such as reduced stress levels, lowered blood pressure and heart rate, and the release of oxytocin and other neurohormones associated with feeling good. In my national book tour to support its release, I appeared on major TV and radio talk shows. The hosts were usually fascinated, as it was all new to them, and to their audiences. In some cities, like Portland, the response was so enthusiastic that I was held over for two extra segments. We hoped it would spark a much greater interest in the use of this ancient healing art, yet alas, between Big Pharma and the FDA, that hasn’t occurred yet. My series of relaxing and healing recordings helped launch a new genre of functional wellness music, and introduced a remarkable new sound to the mix. Key to my early albums was the Fender Rhodes electric piano, essentially a series of tuning forks played by a keyboard. Much less percussive than a grand piano, its unique tonal palette produces the purest and most therapeutic tones of any keyboard or other instrument. (See the Cymatics images of how a violin’s waveforms compare on YouTube: youtu. be/Yw13EAX3cZk).

By: Steven Halpern Do you recall when the FDA was attempting to outlaw the sale of music CDs, and sound and light goggles as “medical devices” back in 1993? Could sound and music, as non-drug alternatives empowering people to take effective steps to support their own wellness be a vital part of the health care discussion? Or will its potential continue to be marginalized? In the early 90s, I wrote a column after I participated in an intense meeting of industry leaders. To our surprise and relief, when the Republicans swept into office in the 1994 elections, the threat evaporated. Democracy is founded upon an educated electorate…an electorate that researches the truth behind the slogans, and that knows its history. It often seems like there’s a concerted effort to keep the different realities off the discussion platform. Like a magic act, our attention is diverted, and we are distracted from what really matters. I was delighted to learn about the remarkable and timely work of David Nicol, Ph.D. His new book, Subtle Activism: The Inner Dimension of Social and Planetary Transformation, presents an uplifting and practical exploration of how the transformative potential of consciousness can be harnessed, rather than just talking about it. (GaiaField.net) As a sound healer, it makes sense to begin to join together with other groups or organizations, such as the Shift Network, and the Institute for Noetic Sciences (IONS). Maybe there will be a positive outcome, no matter what happens on election night. Until next time, stay in harmony and balance with your favorite healing music, Steven Halpern STEVEN HALPERN is a Grammy-award nominated recording artist, researcher, and pioneering sound healer. Through his music, books, and research, he continues to explore Next-Gen sound healing. What is a Spirit to Do When the Human is Broken? Part 2 CYBERWEAVE SPIRITUALITY AND THE INTERNET By: Mary Montgomery
Part 1 of this discussion appeared in my online August Cyberweave column. I focused on answers to this question: Why are we so relieved when tragic things can be tied to a physical abnormality and not just a mental one? This relief is exactly what many of us felt as we grappled with the murder/suicide of Jungian Therapist, Theologian, and Author Dr. Robert Moore, and his wife, Jungian Psychoanalyst Margaret Shanahan. Somehow, it helped to know that this man who had helped so many with their mental health was driven to murder/suicide by the physical abnormality called Vascular Dementia.
not only to us, but also to those around us. A second process, according to Moore, is found in religious traditions, which emphasize the radical importance of sacrificial attitude and rituals. “They intuited,” said Moore, “that you have to be willing not to take the credit for how wonderful you are.” When our cup begins to run over with golden energies from the chalice of our soul, we’ve got to consciously offer it back to the primal power.
That left the core question: What is a Spirit to do when the human is broken? There is no easy answer. I found a clue, however, in the work of Dr. Moore, himself. Soon after his book Facing the Dragon: Confronting Personal and Spiritual Grandiosity came out in 2003, Moore gave a lecture at The Mankind Project Summer Gathering (mankindproject.org). Dragon symbolism is present in cultures throughout the world and throughout history. In the west, the dragon is lurking and dangerous, and must be killed in order to protect your community. In the east, the dragon is also a huge powerful force, yet you respect it, and bring this powerful force into a partnership, which allows you to have creativity as a human being. For Moore, dragon images call to mind the primal “other” that is within each of us. It is a transpersonal thing. The danger lies in not being aware of it, not respecting it. That’s when our ego unconsciously begins to identify with this primal “other” within, or begins to project it onto other human beings. There is so much more in this lecture than space allows. A major point, however, is to use processes in our lives that not only allow us to be conscious and respectful of primal forces, but to use this primal (God, Higher Power, Buddha, Great Spirit) “juice” in creative, rather than destructive ways. Moore states that one of the processes can be gleaned from C.G. Jung’s Alchemical Studies. In alchemy there is an understanding that you need to discern what the elements are, and then balance them in our personalities. By balancing them, we create a vessel, an inner chalice, an inner temple. This vessel helps us hold more of that primal “juice” that helps fuel the work that we have to do in our lives. This can make us wonderfully integrated. Yet, according to Moore, the danger is that this vessel fills up very fast. When that cup runs over, watch out! That excess energy runs down into our personality, into our family, or into our community or world. The archetypal energies flood and cause chaos,
A process that Moore used was to speak to the dragon each morning upon awaking, making it clear that he was not it. “I am working very hard,” he stated, “to continue trying to see and to recognize these dragon energies in my own life.” Dr. Moore urged his fellow therapists to give their patients effective processes to help them become more awake and aware, and conscious of these primal dragon energies. In the end, however, Dr. Moore, himself, became unconscious, and allowed these dragons to snuff out his wife’s life, and his own in an act of chaos. So…I’m still left with that unanswered question: What is a Spirit to do when the human is broken—broken in such a way that the brain or body is damaged, and blocking access to consciousness? I’m out of space, so there will have to be a Part 3. Stay tuned. My Advice: Robert Moore’s work is deep and meaningful. Check it out on Amazon.com, or his website, robertmoore-phd.com. NOVEMBER 2016 COSMIC DAILY WEATHER
By: Kaye Berjot
THIS MONTH CAN BE QUITE SOBERING, AS YOU REALIZE YOU’VE TAKEN PART IN A MOVIE THAT WASN’T TO YOUR LIKING. NOVEMBER TEACHES US THAT WE CAN’T IGNORE THE ROLE THAT WE PLAY.
Summary November kicks off with the energy of the New Moon on October 31st. With this type of energy, we begin to see things differently, and with that we shed outdated and worn-out ideologies that no longer work. The first part of the month is dedicated to clearing, while the latter part of the month is dedicated to acceptance of what needs to be rebuilt. Neptune comes out of retrograde during the latter part of the month. Therefore, you could become a little nostalgic towards the events that transpired around January-March of 2016. This month can be quite sobering, as you realize you’ve taken part in a movie that wasn’t to your liking. November teaches us that we can’t ignore the role that we play. We have to absolutely play the role that allows us to be free; free of baggage, free of fear, free of denial. Yet, free to accept love, abundance, and clarity. Make November work for you! ** Please see the end of the month for information about the Moon Void of Course (VoC). **
36 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
Tuesday, November 1 The New Moon in Scorpio yesterday has you viewing things differently. As the Sun snuggles up against Mercury, your thoughts might be focused on change and forward movement. You’ve been trying to build upon solid ground for some time now, yet unexpected variables seem to keep getting in the way. Uranus retrograde wants you to take a good look at yourself, and any illusions that you’re still holding onto, so that you can release any stubborn aggression that continues to linger in the background. Moon VoC ends at 9:44 AM in Sagittarius.
Wednesday, November 2 When the Moon is in Sagittarius, your emotions can escape you, bumping up against the past, and reflecting on previously hidden wants. When you understand the source of those desires, you might find that you feel quite differently about them than you’d originally felt. Maybe it’s time to remove that source from your lesson plan. The things that it conjures up are outdated and misguided, and don’t serve the needs for what’s occurring now.
Thursday, November 3 During the early morning the Moon sits in the same chair as Venus, while making a positive aspect to retrograde Uranus and Jupiter in Libra. This allows the sign of I am (Aries), and the sign of I balance (Libra), to communicate in an emotionally soothing way as they break the chains that bind you. This energy can be beautifully intense. Moon VoC 5:36 AM until 10:06 PM in Capricorn.
the change that you want to create. If you want to be part of a loving community, you’re going to have to be part of building a better community. Moon VoC 3:58 AM until 7:56 AM in Aquarius.
Monday, November 7 Today the Moon makes a positive aspect to Jupiter. This allows the signs of Libra and Aquarius to build a bridge, which leads to a gateway, which the sole purpose of is to build concrete values that work for everyone…including you.
Tuesday, November 8 All planets are involved today, and each has a position. The Moon and Jupiter are still collaborating, and have managed to bring Uranus in on the discussion. This is a conversation about what is best for the collective conscious, and Uranus knows that in order to do what’s best, you have to do unconventional things. Moon VoC 7:56 AM until 3:46 PM in Pisces.
Wednesday, November 9 Mars at 0° Aquarius can make it seem as though you’ve just come out of a battle. Relationships have been changed, you’ve been changed, and the community has been changed. If you feel a little emotionally naïve, with the Moon against a retrograde Neptune, that’s understandable.
Thursday, November 10 Friday, November 4 As the Moon gets comfortable in Capricorn you can’t help but feel lighter. When you break the chains that bind you to undesirable circumstances, you might feel as though something is missing. In this case what’s missing is luggage. The baggage that you’ve been carrying around for years has been offloaded. Feel good about that. It took a lot of work to start that demolition project.
Saturday, November 5 The T-squares involving Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto, and the Moon can seem a little stressful. Why, you might ask? Well, it’s because others have realized that you’re no longer carrying their baggage. Don’t be tempted to carry their luggage again. Try to remember how great it feels to think and feel for yourself.
Sunday, November 6 Right now, tension is in the air, and you could feel emotionally up in arms. This is one of those times when you’re going to have to be
As we continue to uncover deeply hidden truths, we are reminded of the pain points that got us to this space in time. Emotionally we are shedding old ways of thinking, in search of new ways of being. Faith can only be restored by turning over one stone at a time. Moon VoC 5:17 PM until 7:46 PM in Aries.
Friday, November 11 The Moon is in Aries, and positively aspects Mars and Mercury, causing your thoughts and words to speak in unison, your emotions to detach from fragmented memories, and your energy to take you towards a place where you feel welcome. Today’s the day when you actually feel comfortable with your new community.
Saturday, November 12 Venus is at 0° Capricorn today, and makes a positive aspect to Uranus and the Moon. The phrase “chaos leads to order” seems quite fitting right about now. Be happy that the chaos didn’t cause you to completely abandon yourself. Moon VoC 6:46 AM until 8:25 PM in Taurus. ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 37
Sunday, November 13
Saturday, November 19
It feels good to be grounded. Knowing that your true values are located within you is what keeps you motivated. The more people who understand that, the better off we all will be. That’s what the Moon trine Venus tells us.
With the Moon in Leo we have a positive trine to the Sun and Mercury. You’ve learned a great deal by following your intuition. Paying attention to your own life lessons has turned out to be a wonderfully insightful journey. When you can look back at the path that you’ve traversed, and recognize how differently things look now as compared to back then; well, there are just no words to describe it.
Monday, November 14 As the Moon continues to make its way through Taurus it has a tense conversation with the Sun in Scorpio. The Full Moon in Taurus could be the culprit. It’s time to let go of any values that are not coming from you. It’s during this time that you are able to see just how much other people’s goals have played a role in shaping your own. VoC 9:53 AM until 7:24 PM in Gemini. Full Moon at 7:53 AM.
Tuesday, November 15 The Full Moon energy is still with us today, and could have you rapidly breaking away from the emotional chatter that has caused you to be naïve, and stuck in a never-ending lesson. You are seeking balance regarding relationships, and you are finally able to see the forest, and not just the trees.
Sunday, November 20 Did anyone ask for a double dose of Kite energy? Well if so, today the universe delivers. This is probably one of the easiest days of the month. Regardless of which way you look, you’ll see a determination to innovate, communicate, and create healthy boundaries, relationships, and egos.
Monday, November 21 As the Moon inches its way out of Leo it squares the Sun, indicating a lesson about not letting your light be dimmed by other people’s shadows. Neptune coming out of retrograde is echoing the same sentiment, because at some point in the future you’ll want to put the rose-colored glasses back on. Just remember. Don’t do it. VoC 2:34 AM until 3:35 AM in Virgo.
Wednesday, November 16 The T-squares involving the Moon, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, and Pluto could have you feeling a little alarmed. That’s because it’s painful to break up with previously held ideas, even when you know and recognize that they aren’t your own. Try to find jubilance in your newly-found freedom, as it will be the component that helps to keep you afloat. VoC 4:59 PM until 6:58 PM in Cancer.
Thursday, November 17 There’s a loose T-Square involving Venus, Uranus, and Jupiter today. This aspect is pushing you to carefully work on your values, and to work towards attaining those things that are valuable to you. You can’t afford to lose your equilibrium. It’s time to protect yourself with the love and abundance that you deserve.
Friday, November 18 With a Cardinal Grand Cross occurring in the sky, you are tempted to ask yourself a few questions. These questions have to do with the self, the home, relationships, and your role in life. You should be ready to answer the whys, when’s and how’s. Some of the answers you come up with will have to do with fear, while others have everything to do with love. Just be sure to ask yourself whose love you’ve been seeking. VoC 4:04 PM until 9:16 PM in Leo.
38 Conscious Community - NOVEMBER 2016
Tuesday, November 22 When the Moon comes into close proximity of the North Node, squares Mercury and Saturn, trines Venus and Pluto, and opposes Neptune, you might wonder if you’d missed a lesson plan. If you overanalyze something to the point of where it makes you want to flip flop, then yes, you probably skipped over a section. However, if you look to the energy of Venus and Pluto in Capricorn, maybe the section that you didn’t read had nothing to do with you, and was therefore not meant for you to consume. Which means…you didn’t miss out on anything, so don’t worry. VoC 11:43 AM until tomorrow afternoon.
Wednesday, November 23 Saturn and Mercury are nestled together in Sagittarius and make an unlikely duo. With that said, Saturn has learned quite a bit due to his extended stay in the sign of big thinking, and is sharing what he’s learned with Mercury, the planet of voice and mind. Is it possible that you’ve learned how to see obstacles as opportunities for growth? If so, you’re on the right track towards success. VoC ends at 1:43 PM in Libra.
Thursday, November 24 Today is an easy day. It’s easy because you’ve made the decision for it to be easy. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t areas of tension, it simply means that you’ve decided that those tensions won’t disrupt the comradery that you are currently experiencing.
tune. Moving towards a new goal can often feel like the abandonment of another. It’s only abandonment if the previous goal was something that would have continued to be beneficial. Otherwise, it’s called progress. New Moon at 6:19 AM.
Wednesday, November 30 Friday, November 25 The Moon and Jupiter are coupled in the sign of partnership. Today is a day when you are open to sharing your trials and tribulations with others who seem to be on the same journey as you. It’s quite possible that you’ll find understanding in unlikely places. These are the types of things that can occur when you let go of previously held concepts that were never yours to adopt. VoC 7:53 AM until tomorrow morning.
Saturday, November 26 As the Moon makes its way into Scorpio it trines Neptune. You can’t help but to think back to the month of February, when you began the process of waking up to the things that needed to be discarded. Now you’re able to see why that event occurred. The rose-colored glasses needed to be removed in order for you to move forward. VoC ends at 2:04 AM in Scorpio.
Sunday, November 27
The march towards stability keeps you on track. In order to accomplish your goals, you’ll need perseverance and hard work. In addition, you’ll need to value the efforts that you put towards making big things happen. Even the small things are big things according to Pluto. Move the needle one stitch at a time.
The Moon Void of Course (VoC) is the time period from when the Moon makes its last aspect in one sign before moving into the next sign. The Moon is the fastest-moving planet, and transitions from one sign into the next every 1-3 days. What that means is that the Moon is constantly in motion, it’s never retrograde, so it’s inevitable that she will connect with “something,” i.e. another planet or transit, until the moment that she doesn’t. During the moments when she doesn’t connect, we call it the Moon Void of Course. When these events occur, the best thing to do is to meditate, sit still, and listen to your higher guidance. Sitting still does not mean to physically sit still, although it can be beneficial.

An emotional tug-of-war could take place today. The urge to want to skip to the last chapter of the book could make you want to ignore the chapters between the present and the future. With some things that’s just not possible, because it’s the chapters in the middle that you have control over. If you don’t pay attention to those, the future won’t make any sense. VoC 3:49 PM until tomorrow.
Monday, November 28 When the Sun, Saturn, and Mercury square Neptune you have to take a look at your illusions. To a certain extent your life is a movie, and it is created based upon a series of hopes and dreams that end up to become your raison d’etre. Whatever movie you’d dreamt up didn’t end up the way that you’d envisioned. With that said, you now have other options that could lead you towards the fruition that you’d hoped for. It’s ok to have new goals. You’re the star of your own movie. VoC ends at 2:47 PM in Sagittarius.
Tuesday, November 29 The New Moon in Sagittarius meets up with the Sun. This could leave you in quite an emotional state. The reason is because there are so many feelings that you’re experiencing, that it is difficult to get a hold of them, especially when these emotions square NepConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 39
