Letter from the Publisher I will be speaking at the Paranormal Conference in Palos Hills on Sunday, October 11th. This will be a first for me and I honestly don’t know what to expect. My topic is “The Mystical Nature of Dreams,” because for most of us, dreams are our primary contact with our spirit guides. The Spiritual Learning Center will conclude it’s movie and class discussion series with the “Wizard of Oz” on October 22nd. This is the classic version with Judy Garland which almost everyone has seen. But to my knowledge, no one has led a discussion of the metaphysical content and symbolism of the movie, which I will be doing immediately following the movie. It will be fun and enlightening. See the ad in this issue for time and move details. To all those who deny the reality of global warming, July 2015 was the hottest month on record for the earth. And the earth is on its way to having its hottest year on record. And if 2015 sets a new record for hottest annual temperature for the planet, it will be because it has broken the existing record---set in 2014. That means the two years of highest temperatures of the world are not only back to back, but right now. This data was measured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA, and the Japan Meteorological Agency, in case you are wondering about (or doubting) the source. These are times of great change in virtually all areas of human endeavor and on the earth itself. To those who say there is nothing we can do about change, I have some suggestions. The coastal states of our country are the hardest hit by weather and earth changes and that will continue for many year and decades. If you are considering relocating, don’t move there. If you already live there, strongly consider moving further inland. We are witnessing global change and the most powerful effects for us will be on our coasts. The drought and forest fires in California are not accidents and we have no control over them. More than a thousand homes were lost in the latest California disaster. It is more subtle on the east coast but parts of the Florida Keys and North Carolina’s Outer Banks have already been lost and those changes are permanent. The bad news is the worst is yet to come. The rising temperatures are melting ancient glaciers and ice caps and the resulting water has to go somewhere. The rising Atlantic Ocean will claim progressively more land mass at the expense of people who live there. Land areas that were “filled in” on the east coast to build upon in the last 100 years or so are particularly vulnerable to inundation. In our national, state and local political arenas, the people are finally figuring out that they can make a difference. The sudden prominence in the presidential primaries of Bernie Sanders, an avowed socialist, Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorino, the later 3 having never held an elected office, has been meteoric and challenging to determine why. I am reminded of the words of the actor Peter Finch’s character in the movie “Network”, “I am sick and tired and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Many Americans are sick and tired of a do-nothing congress and state and local politics filled with corruption, nepotism, incompetence and just plain stupidity. Hardly a day goes by without the news reporting a new political scandal. “Scandal” has become a hit show on television. You can certainly imagine why. No wonder people are tired and ready for a change. I urge our readers to participate in the change. Many are saying they are just going to stay home and not get involved. That is probably the worst path to take. We can create change and it gets easier the more people join in and participate. Whatever you do, don’t give up. Join a group, get involved, let your voice be heard. Check in, not out. Until next time,

HALLOWEEN: The True History by Walter Perschke Halloween is ancient. We know it dates back to the ancient Celtic and Druid traditions thousands of years ago. Ancient Celtics divided the year into two parts, the light and the dark. The holiday of Samhain (sah’-wen) celebrated the dividing point between the two halves, and the beginning of the dark half. As the harvest was completed and the days grew shorter, a harvest festival was celebrated on October 31, until sunset on November 1st. The festival was a celebration of a successful harvest or prayers to carry the people through the winter until spring. It could be a scary time of possible food shortages; nights were fearful and a time to stay home. One of the beliefs of the ancient Celts was that time and space became permeable and one could cross from one dimension to another at this time. It also meant that spirits of the dead could cross over into the Celts reality and interact with them, a haunting if you will. Not just the dead could cross over, but people or entities from other times, because the veil lifted was not just of time, but of space as well. The veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, the dead could mingle with the living, and the living could be lost in the dimension of the spirits. This is at the root of many of the Halloween traditions. Our obsession with Halloween decorations of skeletons, tombstones, coffins and ghosts probably began right there in Celtic practices. Bonfires were a staple of Samhain. The Celts observed a ritual where they drove their cattle between two rows of bonfires to determine which cattle were to be slaughtered for the winter. The celebration of the dead was not limited to the Celtic culture. Many, if not most cultures, in particular Ireland and Scotland had a day, or period of day, to celebrate those who have crossed over in death. Agricultural societies were very prominent in their observance of a holiday for the dead, usually coinciding with the end of the fall harvest. The traditions of the holiday for the dead in pagan cultures were carried forward to us today by the Christian church. Adopting a pagan date for a church holiday was a fairly common practice in the Christian church, which also adopted December 25, the birth date of the pagan god Mithra, for another famous Christian holiday. The practice was believed by the church to facilitate the conversion of pagans, who were already celebrating these days, to Christianity. It looks like it worked. Lemuria, the ancient Roman feast of the dead, celebrated on May 13, was the end of a period of placating the dead. This was a time of not just honoring, but making peace with the departed. 4 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

In Roman times, milk was poured on graves to prevent haunting. They were also offered small cakes, which over the centuries have been transformed into today’s candy “treats.” Pope Boniface IV co-opted Lemuria, changing the name to All Saints Day, all the way back in the year 609 A.D. The stated purpose was changed, but the traditions and practices of the celebration were passed on in great part. All Saints Day was renamed All Hallows Day and moved to November 1st, the day after Samhain, in an effort to supplant the pagan holiday. History does not give us an exact date, but it probably occurred during the papacy of Gregory III (731741). As a result, October 31st began to be called “All Hallows Evening,” then shortened to “All Hallows Even” and we were on our way to the shorter name we know today, of Halloween. Further enhancing the tradition and mystique of Halloween, the church added November 2nd to the calendar as an “All Souls Day,” to honor all who have passed on from life on earth. This reinforced the association of Halloween with death and souls. Purgatory, a church concept, played a role in the development of our Halloween traditions and practices. Catholic theology says that souls in purgatory, a place between heaven and hell, can be elevated to heaven by the prayers of the living. A Medieval custom, children would go “souling” door to door and receive spiced cakes filled with raisins called soul cakes, in exchange for praying for the souls in purgatory, with this practice contributing to today’s trick-or-treat. The endless cycle of life and death was a part of many traditions, not just Halloween. The practice of wearing masks came into prominence in the early 1600’s, often associated with violence because the mask concealed the identity of the perpetrators. The practices leading to today’s Halloween had become more rowdy and sometimes violent. Door to door beggars, often children, but more frequently adult indigents, became more aggressive with their door to door begging. The “trick” part of trick-or-treat came progressively into being, with violent demonstrations and vandalism, including bonfires, against the resident population and was facilitated by the wearing of mask to conceal the identity of the perpetrators. The boundaries between life and death were not the only ones tested, social norms and public behavior were as well. Guy Fawkes, on November 5, 1605, tried to blow up The House of Lords in England. While Fawkes was unsuccessful and subsequently hanged, a new event that is still practiced today in parts of England began to mock and celebrate his attempt by parading in the streets, begging door to door, and setting bonfires.

Visit our website: www.CrystalEarthRockShop.com Guy Fawkes Day is also known as bonfire night, in part because after his hanging, his body was burned in a bonfire. All of this transpired in Europe, but the colonization of America was about to begin. The early American colonists brought some of their Halloween precursor traditions with them from Europe to the New World, including the fascination with death and the departed. Guy Fawkes Day was among them. The Pilgrims were not particularly receptive to this event, but they had their own contribution to make to Halloween, witches. The witch craze that swept Europe and America in the 1600’s, and well into the 1700’s, solidified the images we now associate with this holiday -broomsticks, cauldrons, black cats and pointed hats were all fairly commonplace household staples in colonial homes, but their association with witches became indelible with the Salem and other witch trials of their time. Why? Who knows? There are no further recorded influences on our modern Halloween until the American Civil War. With a half-million or more dead during the war, many of their bodies unclaimed and unknown, gossip began which became legend. The souls of the dead, lost on the battlefield, return home as ghosts to haunt their familiar places or to live as ghosts, wandering in the limbo of the battlefields and surrounding areas. Ghost stories were not new at this time, but the War Between the States gave rise to a myriad of new tales of the realm of the dead. Incidentally, the practice of wearing a white sheet as a ghost costume arose from

CandlesZodiac Chakra Affirmation & Blessed Herbal Beeswax

the burial shroud common in Western Europe and America then. The attachment of these stories to the developing celebration of Halloween was just a matter of time. Following the war, a major immigration to America from Scotland and Ireland began. Both nationalities had their own version of Halloween which became integrated into our now native legends. The Scots brought us the bogeyman and the stories were very scary. In their tradition, the bogies, or bogeymen, were pesky ghosts bothering children. We are not certain where the tale of Jack O’Lantern originated, but the new wave of immigrants brought it with them to our shores. It did originate in Europe, and the original lanterns were carved with faces from a turnip and placed in windows to ward off evil spirits. Pumpkins came later, an American contribution that happens to be harvested at just the right time. Scots and Irish also donated the stone throwing and prank playing by adolescent boys to our culture. Not that we wouldn’t have created it for ourselves. This practice was to erupt in very destructive ways that surpassed just public nuisance during the 1920’s and early 1930’s in America. While all this was going on, Halloween, which had been a predominantly rural phenomenon, continued it’s migration into the cities. The 1920-1939 period was transformational for Halloween. It was a time of great stress, beginning with the Roaring 20’s and Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 5

ending in the Great Depression. The permissiveness of the former coupled with the crowding in the cities created an opportune environment for the next incarnation of this holiday. The trick part of trick-or-treat became very violent in the cities. Pranks that had been benign became malicious and destructive. Throwing stones became window breaking on a major scale, including the windows of those newfangled automobiles. The bonfires in the streets and open areas became torched buildings. This destruction peaked in 1933, during the Great Depression and that became known at Black Halloween, and sometimes Hell Night. But the aftermath was very positive. Civic groups began to organize community events which included parades, costume parties and contests, and games. A manufacturer, Dennison, began to mass produce costumes for sale at the local drugstore and dime store. Sears, then the largest retailer in America, listed costumes and paraphernalia in its catalogues for the first time. The mass merchandisers had discovered Halloween and it had ‘arrived’ in close to its present form. The malicious destruction was over and commercialism on the rise. But the story is not over yet, and perhaps it never will be, as we reinvent this popular holiday yet again. The term “trick-or-treat” is relatively new. The practice, as we have seen, is quite old, but the term first appears in print in America in 1939. Trick or treating became indelibly mainstream when it receives the blessing of an American icon, Charlie Brown, in the 1966 comic strip, Peanuts. Trick-or-treating had officially arrived and so had the theme of the “Great Pumpkin.” I would be remiss if I did not mention one more twist in the road. In 1978, the classic John Carpenter movie ‘Halloween’ was

6 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

introduced. Scary, you bet! And that is exactly the new face we were presented with. Not exactly a new idea, but definitely a new face, or mask. Michael Meyers became the best-selling mask of all time, and we have a new log rekindling the fire of Halloween. Films and television have had a profound effect on how we practice and celebrate Halloween. It is now a major adult activity which it wasn’t 50 years ago. It is still primarily a day for the kids but adults are increasingly involved, not just as parents, but as participants, especially in dress up. There is a self-transformation aspect of American society that has found an outlet here. Once a year, people get to play out their fantasies in full costume and share it with other adults. Hopefully this is not their only avenue of self- transformation, but if it is (or isn’t), I hope they have lots of fun with it. Where else can grown men get to be action figures and women get to be ladies of the night? C mmunity Happenings OCTOBER MOVIE WITH DISCUSSION: WIZARD OF OZ Thursday, October 15

7-9pm

The original Wizard of Oz movie, starring Judy Garland, is probably the most mystical movie ever made for general audiences. The symbolism is very real and informative but missed by almost everyone because they just don’t know what they are looking at or experiencing. This is a Hollywood classic which has thrived and survived the test of time. The enchantment and mystery is still alive in this film, that has already celebrated its 75th birthday, perhaps because its mystical message is profound and eternal. Don’t miss the show and plan to stay afterwards for the discussion class that follows the movie and includes the metaphysical explanation of the movie’s symbolism. All About Town… The Spirit of Money

How to Bring Love and Light to the Money in Your Life Flowering Heart Center - Downers Grove, IL September 15th, 2015

by Theresa Puskar “There once was a man who decided to take a trip. He struggled to pay for it, and lived on only cheese and crackers for the duration. He saw others on the ship eating delectable feasts, and thoroughly enjoying their voyage. While he struggled, he did what he felt he needed to do. On the last day of the journey, someone who had noted that he had only been eating cheese and crackers stopped him and asked, ‘Why are you living on such meager rations?’ To which he replied, ‘I could not afford the lavish food and drink that is sold on this ship.’ ‘But sir,’ retorted the guest, ‘All of the food and drink on this cruise ship were covered with the purchase of your ticket!’ From the moment I heard this story, I sought out every “cheese and crackers” story I could find! If he had only inquired about the cost of the food, he could have thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Why are we here today? We are here to enjoy the ride!” – Sherrin Ross Ingram I know what my “cheese and crackers” story is. Do you know what yours is? We have to know what our current story is before we can even begin to rewrite it! On September 15th I attended Sherrin Ross Ingram’s seminar entitled, The Spirit of Money: How to Bring Love and Light to the Money in Your Life at the Flowering Heart Center in Downers Grove. The moment I met Sherrin, I could feel her passion, her might, and most significantly, her open heart. She has an eclectic career past, having once been a practicing lawyer, then a real estate investor, and currently a professional writer, coach, and motivational speaker.

Sherrin Ingram and host, Frank Panek 10 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

A force to be reckoned with, she has published many books on a variety of topics, including marketing, branding, empowerment, strategic planning, wealth-building, and decoding your desires. While a great deal of her speaking engagements are with professional organizations on the tips and tactics to acquiring wealth, she shared that she enjoys speaking with audiences like ours the most: spiritual seekers who want to grow emotionally, spiritually and financially. Perhaps what I loved most about this seminar was how Sherrin spoke from her heart, and based her suggestions on her own personal experiences. Along with sharing powerful theories and great words of wisdom, she also provided tried and true techniques that she used to overcome her own feelings of poverty and lack.

“You could have greater impact in the world if you weren’t worried about money.” – Sherrin Ross Ingram Have you ever considered that by not living up to your full potential, you are actually cheating others of theirs? This is a theory that I have never really explored before. In my experience, I think that we often see wealth as a pie. If I take a big piece, I am selfish, and I take it from someone else who could have enjoyed it. However, if we truly believe in the abundance of the world, and that all things are infinite and come from our divine, then wealth is unlimited and our birthright. Taking this a step further, if we do not follow the gifts that are given as our birthright, then we are cheating others from experiencing the higher energy that comes with our success. We are also cheating them of the example and “soul food” that comes from living an

abundantly fulfilled life. Wouldn’t it be interesting to live the following paradigm: It is not our soul’s right to live in abundance, but in fact, it is our responsibility to do so, both for the sake of ourselves and others. “Resources flow to those who make the most valued use of the resources they already have.” – Sherrin Ross Ingram One of the first questions Sherrin asked was, “What does money mean to you?” I suggest that you take a moment, get a pen and paper, and ask yourself this question. She then asked, “Do you value money?” Consider this. If you don’t, then you will always repel it. For you will tend to move away from what you don’t respect or value. A key component of valuing money is respecting it. Thus if you respect it, you will use it wisely. How well do you use your money? Are you resourceful with how you manage it? “All forgiveness is about self-forgiveness.” – Sherrin Ross Ingram How many times in a day do you think or say, “I can’t afford it?” I never thought I spoke a great deal of lack until my sister, who was recently visiting from Canada, pointed it out to me. First and foremost, I believe we have to take ownership and responsibility for the lack in our lives. If we see ourselves as victims, that’s what we will be! I know what my “cheese and crackers” story is: I deserve more. I’m not paid enough for the talents that I have. I feel embarrassed as I write this, yet I know that exploring it will heal it. There is a paradigm here; on one hand, I absolutely know that I am only a victim of my own limited beliefs. However, in the same breath that I speak this truth, I catch myself blaming others for the lack that I experience; the banks, the companies I work for, the clients I service, the local government, or even the world economy, just to name a few.

Theresa Puskar and Sherrin Ross Ingram While Sherrin touched on quite a number of key points around building wealth in our lives, one of the key messages she shared was that we each have the power to change our relationship with money. I believe that the secret lies in knowing what that relationship is; where it is wounded or misguided, and where we can open energetic portals to shifting our thoughts, then our actions, and finally the outcome of our stories. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to move beyond my boring “cheese and crackers” story, and into the “abundant” world of experiential delights that I draw to me as I make use of the emotional tool belt that Sherrin provided. In doing so I am fully convinced that I will manifest my wondrous desires in all of their opulent glory. And so it is! To learn more about Sherrin and any upcoming workshops, you can log onto sherrin.com, or email her at sherrin@sherrin.com.

“Visualize enjoying the manifestations of your desires and how they benefit others.” – Sherrin Ross Ingram One of the key take-aways that I noted at the seminar was that my visualizations on acquiring the wealth that I desire would be greatly enhanced if I also focused on how manifesting those desires would not only benefit me and others as well. To expand upon this point, Sherrin gave an example of a new car. By purchasing the car, she would benefit the sales rep with the commission he would make. She would also benefit the mechanics that worked on it, the staff who assembled it, the insurance broker who insured it, and each and every individual who would be involved in its ongoing maintenance and upkeep. By doing this exercise, you take your thinking beyond your personal desires and into a more altruistic mindset. This, in turn, fuels your passion and the power of your visualization considerably, as you are moving from self-healing to the betterment of many. “You have the power to command the unseen forces to assist you. Use it wisely!” – Sherrin Ross Ingram

From the Heart How Many Miracles Do You Get? by Alan Cohen A coaching client reported that years ago when she became pregnant, her doctors told her that the baby would not survive. She and her husband prayed fervently for the child’s well-being, and the baby was born healthy, and went on to live a happy life. Since that time she had a few miscarriages, and now the couple very much wants another child. “Do you think we each get a certain allotment of miracles, and when we use it up, we get no more?” she asked. “That’s not how it works,” I told her firmly. “Miracles and wellbeing are our natural state, given freely forever. Only the human mind puts limits on the good available to us. It is not God’s grace we need to beg for, it is our own. And we don’t need to beg. We just need to claim it.” We were all born in utter freedom. Every limit you perceive has been learned, a tight and restricting cloak laid over the magnificence that you are. One of the most exhilarating explorations in life—really your only purpose—is to discover the illusory limits you have adopted, shine the light on them to reveal their untruth, and grow beyond them. Guilt—also learned but not true—tells us that we are selfish to want good things for ourselves. It warns us that if we become happy we will somehow remove the happiness of others. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your happiness contributes to the happiness of others. Because you are a spiritual being, the energy you exude influences others more than your actions. Thus your genuine joy is your greatest contribution to humanity. Accepting your blessings does not diminish the quality of life for anyone else. The nature of blessings is to expand. A woman named Sara attended my Life Mastery Training in Hawaii. “I worry about money, I yearn for a relationship, and I don’t feel good,” she told the group. During the training Sara examined, questioned, challenged, and moved beyond her sense of smallness and non-deservingness. She experienced “aha” moments and opened to greater prosperity. The day before the program concluded, Sara told me, “I just did something I have never done before. I phoned the airline and ordered an upgrade to first class for my flight home. It cost me $875—yet I’m worth it!” “Congratulations,” I told her. “You just graduated from the training.” A few weeks later I phoned Sara to find out how she was 12 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

doing. “Fabulous!” she told me. “I loved my first class flight, and when I arrived home I had a miracle. I was going through some financial papers, and I found some unknown funds that exactly equaled the cost of the training plus travel, including my upgrade.” Sara’s experience provides a shining model of expanding prosperity. The more you claim your right to well-being, the more the universe provides. Life gives all to all, and we each receive what we are willing to let in. After a man departed from the world, God was showing him around heaven. When the two passed a locked room, the fellow asked, “What’s in there?” “It would make you very sad to see what is in that room,” answered God. “I want to see it anyway,” the man insisted. God opened the door to reveal a vast chamber of treasures. There were exotic jewels, sophisticated electronic entertainment devices, and luxury cars. “Wow, what a collection!” the man exclaimed. “Why would these riches make me sad?” “These are the gifts I offer people,” God explained, “but if they are not willing to accept them, I must keep them here.” “That’s incredible !” the man replied. “Look at that Rolls Royce over there!” He went to sit in the Rolls and was astounded to find a tag with his name on it. “This was the car I always wanted!” he said. “Every night I prayed to you for a car. . . How come I never got this one?” “Yes, you did pray every night for a car, and I heard your prayer,” God answered. “But you prayed for a Ford.” Instead of asking for what he really wanted, the man asked for what he thought he could get, so he manifested not according to his possibilities, but his expectation. The universe is happy to fulfill our grandest visions, yet we must have the confidence to ask for them. Do not be shy when asking God or people for what you want. Bring a small cup to the ocean, and you will come away with a small volume. Bring a larger cup, and it will be filled. Somerset Maugham said, “It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” You

cannot ask for too many miracles. There is no limit on what you can receive. All is given. When you accept, the transmission of love is complete.

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Eclipses by Kaye Berjot In September, we finished up eclipse season. There are two types of eclipses; solar and lunar. Solar eclipses occur when the moon is between the sun and the earth. This can also be experienced as a conjunction. Lunar eclipses occur when the earth is between the sun and the moon. These types of eclipses can be experienced as oppositions. Please refer back to the article Astrology Basics 101-Transits and Aspects which was published in the December 2014 magazine. In that article I talked about oppositions and conjunctions and how they work. In 2015 we experienced four eclipses; two of them were solar eclipses, and two were lunar. Eclipses occur in pairs. Pairs are zodiac signs that sit across the wheel from one another, in other words opposites attract.

Pairs •

Aries and Libra

Taurus and Scorpio

Gemini and Sagittarius

Cancer and Capricorn

Leo and Aquarius

Virgo and Pisces

In last month’s article, I made reference to this pairing by saying that if you want to know how to be your ideal sign then look across the zodiac table to see who is directly across from you. In layman’s terms this means that if you want to learn how to be a better Sagittarius, then take a good look at a Gemini, because a Gemini will give you a good glimpse at how to be a better, more authentic Sagittarius. Your opposite is a good glimpse in the mirror. They provide you with the opportunity to change what it is that you don’t like, and to keep what it is that you do like. Let’s get back to eclipses. Eclipses force you to see things that you haven’t seen before. They force you to move in ways that you didn’t want to move, and they do this by either shining a light on the things that were hidden in the corner, or by removing obstacles that you paid too much attention to. In 2015, eclipses occurred at 29 degrees Pisces, 14 degrees Libra, 20 degrees Virgo and 4 degrees Aries. The solar eclipses were in Pisces and Virgo, and the lunar eclipses were in Libra and Aries. The dates were March 20th (Pisces), April 4th (Libra), September 13th (Virgo), and September 28th (Aries). It’s important to 14 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

note that eclipses occur during the times of new moons and full moons. Therefore, eclipses occur during times of beginnings and endings, and can be extremely powerful and potent. Whereas a full moon can have you weeping a silent cry, a full moon with an eclipse attached to it can have you in a full blown cathartic mode, and have you questioning your entire existence. So don’t be alarmed if this happens, it’s the solar system’s way of having you address any issues that you’ve been avoiding. One additional thing that you should keep in mind is that you won’t always feel the impact of these eclipses on the exact date of the transit. You may feel them three to five days earlier, or three to five days after the eclipse has occurred. How soon you feel the effects is very much dependent upon how sensitive you are to the effects of the moon, and of planetary transitions in general. The eclipses of 2015 were centered on the Pisces and Virgo axis, and the Aries and Libra axis. This means that the mottos of I believe (Pisces), I analyze (Virgo), I am (Aries), and I balance (Libra), were the main themes of the eclipses. Therefore, it’s important to take a look at your individual chart to see where these signs reside, and in which house they reside in. The solar eclipses that took place on March 20th and September 13th would have shown a spotlight on your beliefs, and on your health. This is because Pisces naturally rules the house of the unconscious, and Virgo naturally rules the house of health. That spotlight would have shown on the things that were hidden in the corner. The unconscious can also be seen as a prison; so these are unconscious prisons that we get trapped in because it is how we’ve been doing things, and therefore they become routine. An eclipse in this sector or sign can show you the bad habit(s) that you’ve adopted as part of your healthy regimen. The solar eclipse would have made you analyze (Virgo) the habit(s), and by the time the September 13th eclipse came along you should have been able to break the habit(s). This is how conjunctions work. They help you to see your unconscious dependencies. The lunar eclipses that occurred on April 4th (Libra), and September 28th (Aries), would have been experienced as an opposition. They would have had you questioning others vs. yourself. The key here is that you would have seen yourself reflected in the eyes of other people, and you may have seen yourself reflected differently than what you’d originally anticipated. A lunar eclipse would have removed the obstacle that you’d previously paid so much attention to. So if you thought that you couldn’t do something because of a limitation, that limitation will be removed so

that you can experience a life without limitations. The key is to not kick yourself because you focused so heavily on that limitation; that would be defeating the purpose. All in all, when you see an eclipse, take note of where it’s occurring within your chart. Think of them as conjunctions and oppositions with an ending and a beginning attached to them. Don’t be afraid of the beginning, and don’t be afraid of the ending. Also be mindful of the fact that the effects of eclipses happen over a period of time, so you don’t have to do everything on day one. You have some time to understand what needs to be changed, and then you have an entire lifetime to work on that change. The benefit of an eclipse is to bring the change(s) that need(s) to happen to your attention. They are brought to you with light. As always, thank you for supporting Conscious Community Magazine. The Shared Heart New Dimensions of Relationship by Joyce and Barry Vissell

Remembering to Say Thank You When our children were little, I read stories over and over that I hoped would instill positive qualities in them. One story always stood out. It was a little book, and the title was, “He remembered to say thank you.” In this Bible story, Jesus is walking in the countryside and comes across a group of 10 lepers. I then needed to explain to our children that a leper is someone with a disease that had no cure at that time, and people could catch the disease by contact. Therefore the lepers were outcasts, and made to live far away by themselves. Back to the story, the 10 lepers beg Jesus to heal them. He touches their heads and they are all healed. All 10 of them instantly run back toward their families in the city, yelling and screaming with joy. One leper stops and realizes that he has not thanked the man that healed him. He then runs back and thanks Jesus. Jesus then says, “10 men were healed and only one remembered to say thank you.” He then puts his hand on the man’s head and says to him, “The others were healed in their body, but you have received a greater blessing by remembering to say thank you.” Of all the stories I read to our children, that story stands out. Sometimes I find myself repeating the words in my head, “He remembered to say thank you.” Those words have become sort of a mantra for me, something I say over and over again, and then I think about the meaning. As we have both written about before, Barry and I and our family like to go rafting, and the Rogue River is a favorite place to go. The first year we went, the ranger told us to be extra careful of a rapid called Blossom Bar, as 12 people had died there just in that one year. Typically a few people die there every year. This year, as we approached that rapid, Barry and I put our heads together and prayed for protection. While Barry was guiding us through the rapid, I sat in the front holding onto our dog, Rosie, and praying the whole time. I could feel the protection like an angel’s wings around us. Once through the rapid, we felt a wave of relief and shouted for joy. Even our dog gave a wiggle. One hour later, that little mantra floated through my head, “He remembered to say thank you.” I asked Barry, during a calm stretch, to put our heads together and say our prayer of thankfulness. That prayer of gratitude helped complete something in a very beautiful way. Another blessing besides the protection had come through to us. Every year Barry and I and our musician friend Charley Thweatt lead a week-long retreat for couples in Hawaii. We love doing 16 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

this very much. Every morning we begin with an early morning meditation. I usually share a short story, and lesson on love to help people go into their hearts more deeply. I pour my heart into this teaching. There is also music by Charley. One year I particularly put a lot of focus on what I was going to say. I rose when it was still dark outside to prepare. It gives me a lot of joy to lead these meditations. Day after day I gave from my heart, and day after day noone commented at all. Every day at least two people would thank Charley for a particular song, yet noone said anything to me. I tried to convince myself that the lack of gratitude was okay. However, since noone commented at all, I began to feel that my efforts were not being received by anyone. I tried to tell myself that I was not doing this for the praise, which was true. I was doing the meditations because I sincerely wanted the group to get these lessons on love, and I loved to do them. Still, day by day, with absolutely no comment, I began to feel sad. Finally I spoke with my friend Judy, who was there with her husband Pat. Judy gave me what I needed, and yet how much better it would have been if someone would have just spoken a word of gratitude or acknowledgement. Everyone needs acknowledgement. That is the very real human part of all of us. This experience in Hawaii led me to thinking about our Creator. Day after day we are all blessed with gifts, such as a beautiful sunset, flowers in bloom, our children, water to drink, and the list goes on and on. Sometimes I wonder if our Creator also wishes that we would acknowledge these amazing gifts. I feel very far from perfect in remembering to say thank you, yet it has become something that is very important to me. I want to give acknowledgement for all of the gifts, however they come and however small. In my relationship with Barry, I try to see the things that he does and thank him. Some things are very big, like the way he looks at me with so much love. Yet even small things, like emptying the dishwasher by himself when it is something that we usually do together, will get a big hug and thank you from me. I want him to know that I see and am grateful for all of the ways, however big or small, that he is helping and loving me. You might think that people know you are grateful, so you don’t have to share it. Remember that expressing your gratitude is a special gift for you as well. Cards, letters, phone calls, a hug in person, an email, or even texts are all powerful ways to express your gratitude. The important thing is to do it. Then there are the

many blessings that come from the unseen hand and Presence of Love which watches over us continually. A moment of noticing and bowing your head in gratitude can bless your life in ways you can hardly imagine. THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS October…Number Ten …The God Force, Good Karma and Money Issues by Elizabeth Summers By October, the beautiful season of Fall has arrived bringing with it new looks in Mother Nature, new weather conditions and new life styles for we humans as we begin our nesting for the next several months. As Mother Earth began to wind things down in the month of September, the final surge of energy blasts forth in October as if to say “I am not done yet”! For all, there is a sense of fate stepping into one’s life. There can be a change of fortune, a moving in a different direction, an opening of luck and even a witnessing of miracles!

that says “your debt has been paid and now you may begin again”. The Number Ten is one of the good Karma codes that can bring prosperity to those who deserve it. If life’s struggles have been burdening you, step back; view everything from a larger perspective allowing a broader vision or realization to take form. Therefore, October is the time to stand on your own and use all your energetic skills to the positive that currently may be buried in your subconscious.

This tenth month of the calendar year has all the energies of a compound Number. Not only does Ten carry the qualities of ONE but the ZERO “super charges” Number One which adds to its intensity.

Basically, the Number One, intensified by the Zero, represents drive and focus. This intellectual and masculine energy represents “no nonsense’ leadership. Ambition and determination are then buzz words. Being a “bossy boss” is a danger here.

The ancients believed that the ZERO symbolized eternity, wholeness, oneness equaling the power of God. To these believers, this glyph was the Alpha and Omega concept represented in the geometric of a circle.

There is much more focus under the Number Ten. This intellectual vibration leads one to take one step at a time towards goals unlike the possible completions and emotional confusions of September. Having said that, know that October can be a culmination of a series of events that bring success and material accomplishments to you. The justice of the Universe is in play.

Metaphorically speaking, the ZERO is like a Delco battery sitting on the store shelf full of force and power. It is not until the battery is connected to the motor in a car, for example or some mechanical device, that this battery and specifically one’s life, that it literally gets one’s motor of life charging ahead! The ZERO in the tenth month of the year “supercharges” the single Number One and intensifies it to move forward with courage, intellectual direction and initiative. Let’s examine just what is being supercharged by ZERO that can bring a new exciting energy to many in October as they say, write, and think the Number Ten. October, the tenth calendar month equates to the Wheel of Good Fortune in Tarot cards. Very interestingly, money always seems to be in the news in October. Stock Market downturns, lottery winners, budget concerns….all seem to grab the headlines. However, happily, the Number Ten is not a nasty Karmic Debt Number which usually leads to personal and financial losses in a lifetime. The Number Ten is not about a debt still to be paid and rectified but an energy to be enjoyed as a consequence of good behaviors and choices made in this incarnation and/or previous human lifetimes. There is a freedom connected to this Number 18 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

In October it is important to see life from a larger viewpoint. Destiny or fate step in under this code filled with surprises, changes in direction and rapid developments that bring new beginnings. You may feel more determined to stand alone, make decisions, arrive at inventive solutions and have all the courage needed to carry them out. Should failure and loss plague you instead, understand that every circumstance in life is the result of choices and you are experiencing the consequences of those out of alignment choices. Regroup, trust that you will be guided and move on because the Wheel of Good Fortune keeps turning and there is another October in your future. Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern

Re-Writing History and Creating our Own: Wayne Dyer, Sound Healing, and 9/11 I’ve been delayed in writing this month’s article due to a recent fall that injured my right wrist and jaw. I am grateful that it was not worse, and I’m learning a lot about living with the use of only one arm. I have even more empathy for wounded warriors and so many others. Daily challenges, like opening a bottle of juice, are daunting. I affirm a full and speedy recovery, yet also recognize the reality of these kinds of accidents for people my age.

and unexpected transition on August 30th. There is so much that I’d like to say to acknowledge Wayne’s contributions to the world. Given my own sudden physical limitations, let me suggest that you read James Redfield’s heartfelt tribute at celestinevision.com. Unlike most media coverage, James (author of The Celestine Prophecy) highlights Wayne’s spiritual journey and evolution beyond his first bestseller, Your Erroneous Zones. If you’ve read any of his more recent books, seen him on PBS, or at a Hay House event, you know how eloquent he was in presenting age-old insights with his own kind of channeling (though I don’t know if he used that term).

Perhaps not so coincidentally, one of the projects I had just finished was a new audio program for PAIN RELIEF. It features some of my latest compositions, combined with brainwave entrainment and subliminal affirmations. Needless to say, I have been listening to it, and it feels like it’s helping.

The day before his passing, I was guided to listen to part of his Making The Shift CD package. His passing the next day took on an extra level of personal resonance, as I also flashed on the multiple times I had the honor to share the stage with him in concert and at conferences.

I hope to have the MP3 available on my website in October and for the public shortly thereafter. Stay tuned for the announcement in the next article. I did not expect to “field test” it in this way, however.

I especially appreciated his popularization of “getting in the gap.” This is the same basic technique I have always used when I’m recording, which I described as “getting in the space between the notes.”

Belief, Knowing, and Programming I was planning to write about a few new books on sound healing that contain some useful information, a lot of misinformation, and so much bias and disingenuousness that several of my colleagues had refused to write endorsements. Most readers would have no clue that there is so much backstory and intrigue going on in the field of sound healing, so we’ll be responding to that in the near future.

If you are interested in adding more of Wayne’s world to your personal library, Hay House has a special offer this month thru Amazon: Kindle eBooks for only $1.99! As I write this on 9/11, I reflect on the many ways that event has changed our world, not the least of which is our perception of reality, and how the cover story became accepted as fact. My wrist is letting me know I must stop now. Until next time, Be well,

In the early 1970s, the old cliché, “You’ll believe it when you see it,” was updated to, “You’ll see it when you believe it.” Researchers cited historical accounts of indigenous populations not being able to ‘see’ the large boats of the Spanish conquistadors because such things did not exist in their reality.

“Help me Lord, please to rise a little higher. Help me Lord, please to burn out this desire.” Hear Me Lord, George Harrison

Recently I went on a silent meditation retreat. I’ve practiced meditation for years, but never had a chance to do five days of silence where I dedicated myself completely to my inner world. I freed myself from my responsibilities for a week then set out to free my mind! If you have been practicing meditation and feel ready to take it to the next level, I highly recommend doing a silence retreat. Why silence? Yoga, Vedanta and Buddhism all teach us to control fears, selfishness and desires that lead to suffering. Yoga teaches the inclination to speak arises from emotions caught in the vastness of mind. When the tongue quiets, the other senses awaken and mindfulness truly begins. In form, silence is not simply refraining from speech, as meditation is not simply emptying the mind. The mind will always chatter away if not given another, more useful chore such as a yoga posture, a breathing exercise, or a mantra. Or we could fill the mind with the senses as we keenly observe the presence of nature. Be careful that thoughts remain pure without adding likes, dislikes or other untoward thoughts or emotions. The Yoga Sutras, from its onset, elucidates the need to calm vrittis, alterations in the mind, by using such methods. It thereby teaches that we can return to our natural unadulterated state with a mind free of afflictions. During the retreat, I was able to reach deep levels of consciousness with great clarity moving beyond the coverings, or koshas, (see October 2014 column) towards the inner Self. I was able to relax my body and mind a great deal. This was easier than usual because the gentlepeople facilitating the retreat guided us through several deep, relaxation techniques. There were also multiple liberating opportunities to practice hatha yoga, breathing exercises, walking meditations, journaling, plus there were four sitting meditations daily. Everything was in a non-judgmental environment. What happened for me during this retreat was, as with my usual meditations, I went through my routine and, as I settled into the 20 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

process I examined thoughts in the mind as they arose, gently Looking at them as if they were old friends. “I remember you. You’ve passed through my mind several times,” I said as the drama of memories flowed past. Then I removed my attachment to the suffering each caused, releasing their hold over me. Yoga has taught for millennia what modern psychology calls cognitive behavioral therapy. The difference from my daily routine was I could persevere longer and wasn’t interrupted. This is abhyasa, or consistent, intentional practice. With the routine and atmosphere of the retreat setting, the practices could be maintained longer than usual. As I surrendered to the schedule, the outer world melted away as the inner world opened up. Such bliss! Vairagya translates as non-attachment or dispassion where we control desires that affect the mind negatively. The Yoga Sutras tells us that by doing the practices regularly with discrimination and dispassion we can overcome negative thought patterns. Dispassion is literally the removal (dis) of suffering (passion). As two wings of a bird are necessary for flight, consistent practice while maintaining dispassion are essential partners for progress in spiritual life. Of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, or Ashtanga, the five niyamas make the second limb. They are: 1. Shaucha, cleaning of the mind. Here one determines not to be disturbed by thoughts that flutter about. 2. Santosha, contentment with what one has. 3. Tapas, doing the necessary work without complaint. 4. Svadhyaya, self-exploration and reflection on prayers. 5. Ishvara-pranidhana, surrender to and practicing the presence of God. Silence is a perfect opportunity to practice the niyamas because they are personal, internal observances serving to liberate us from suffering. I love the last one: Practice the presence of God. The message from Psalm 46 distinctly tells us to practice the presence of God, also:

“Be still and know that I am God…the Lord is with us. God is our refuge.”

But how do we practice? Practice that God is here, now. That’s right, now while reading this. Surrendering to God eliminates desire by seeing that God is here and in all. It’s very satisfying to no longer identify solely with objects of world. No waiting for an epiphany or death. The long search for the Indweller is over when you practice God is present and with you. While on retreat I was able to consistently look at my mind with dispassion and self-study, then I surrendered to the quiet presence. I felt profoundly in touch with the inner world in less than a week. I enjoyed nature, rekindled my spirit, and harmonized my meditation practice. And I can access and surrender to that comforting experience now in daily life more easily. I know I will do a silence retreat again, but I hope it will be for at least 10 days next time.

“Smell the sea and feel the sky; Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic. And when that foghorn blows, I will be coming home.” Into The Mystic, Van Morrison

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery

Experiencing Wisdom at Mothers Trust in Ganges, Michigan Over Labor Day weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting a couple of friends from Chicago at my country home near South Haven, Michigan. It was a double treat since Nancy and Pat not only share my love of nature, also my love of spiritual experiences. That’s why when I suggested that we attend the Sunday service at an interfaith center north of me in Ganges, Michigan, they both answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!” The interfaith center I was referring to actually goes by the long name of Mothers Trust Ashram Retreat, (Center) Ramakrishna Sarada Universal Temple, Lakeshore Interfaith Community. Whew! That’s a mouthful, so for the sake of this column I’ll refer to it as Mothers Trust (motherstrust.org). The fact that not only Mothers Trust, but also the Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago’s Retreat (chicagovedanta.org/ganges. html) are located in a place called Ganges, Michigan raises some interesting questions of the chicken and the egg variety. Was the town named after the Ganges (Ganga in Hindustani), the most sacred river in India? Or did the Vivekananda Vedanta Society and the folks from Mothers Trust gravitate to Ganges, Michigan because of an already established name? It turns out that yes is the answer to the second question. How did it get the name Ganges? Here are the sketchy details: The organization of the township began in 1847. There are several stories about how the township was named. The one most told is that it was named Ganges by Dr. Joseph Coats—but only after his original petition to the state legislature was turned down because the first choice was already in use. No one seems to know how Dr. Coates came up with the name Ganges, which was submitted in his second petition. Whatever the backstory, however, the Mothers Trust community has a vision that directly ties this Michigan hamlet to Varanasi, the north Indian city on the banks of the Ganges that is the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism. When the Mothers Trust was dedicated in 1998, sacred Ganges water was poured into nearby Lake Michigan. During that dedication, Mataji Bandana Puri Devi, President of the oldest convent in Kolkatta (Calcutta), India said: “This place Ganges is as Varanasi in India—1000’s (sic) will come to take pilgrimage here and be blessed and liberated.” 22 Conscious Community --OCTOBER 2015

Back to our recent visit. Every Sunday, Mothers Trust features Interfaith Presenters at 11 am, followed by a Vegetarian Potluck at noon, and a Universal Service & Interfaith Music service at 1 pm. There is also a great program for kids from 11 am to 12 pm. We arrived at the Mothers Trust and were warmly greeted by a community member named Prem, and the speaker, Theodore Richards, Director and Founder of The Chicago Wisdom Project (chicagowisdomproject.org). We had arrived early so there was time to wander the grounds and spend some time in the meditation room. This certainly was one of the highlights of our visit. I centered myself by walking their labyrinth. Pat visited the meditation room and soon found herself in a delightful conversation with one of the friendly, outgoing children who are part of the community. And for Nancy, those grounds ended up at the top of her list. “While I was there, I tried to spend as much time outside as I could,” she said. “I had a sense of peacefulness, and I liked the idea that they were building community and expanding on that by growing their own food and becoming self-sufficient.” At 11 am, we gathered for the presentation given by Theodore, who led us in some exercises used by The Chicago Wisdom Project in their Institute for Holistic Education program. “The mission of The Chicago Wisdom Project is to re-imagine education through holistic programming that transforms individual, community and world through creative expression.” They work with children on the south side of Chicago, and with adults who want to become leaders and educators in their holistic methodology. The first thing Theodore did was implement the holistic by having us reconstruct our auditorium style seating into what The Chicago Wisdom Project calls a Sacred Circle. Their website describes it this way: “We sit in circles, learning to listen and share from the heart and incorporate mindfulness practices into our learning process.” Hmm…Think about it. We’ve done this many times in workshops and such, yet how many times have we actually done this in a church or other sacred setting. I liked that! I think more spiritual services should be done this way. Theodore then conducted the presentation, not as a lecture, but as what they call Inquiry & Dialogue. At The Chicago Wisdom Project, classes are conducted by asking questions. The real learning takes place not when information is delivered from teacher to student, but in the space in-between the teacher and student, where

inquiry and dialogue occurs, and lines are blurred between teacher and student. The presentation was, therefore, a series of questions followed by group discussion. One of those questions was about what we thought about diversity and why it is important. The discussion was wide-ranging. One of the conclusions combined two of the threads of that discussion: Diversity is important, both because through diversity we are better equipped to survive (as in our ecological and food system), and because it reveals that we are all interconnected (an example would be Mothers Trust bringing together diverse faith traditions in order to promote understanding).

Mary Montgomery’s company, Montgomery Media Enterprises, specializes in public relations, writing projects and social media development, especially in the non-profit sector. Ms. Montgomery has a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies from Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS). She has completed the coursework in doctoral studies with a focus on Altruism and Unconditional Love.

After the presentation, we all feasted on a variety of vegetarian delights. All three of us agreed that the food was great! So was the company—especially if you as a visitor make a point of reaching out to engage. My friend Pat especially appreciated this opportunity. Pat is involved with a south side Chicago group called Institute for Positive Living (openbookprogram.org) which is taking the first steps with their alderman to establish a community garden. It turns out that The Chicago Wisdom Project has established the South Side Food Forest on the property of Hales Franciscan High School. By implementing the principles of permaculture; deep ecology; and communal, indigenous practices, this project has become a space for community members to grow healthy food. Pat was delighted to connect with someone who could mentor her own startup garden project. “I never expected this—having a conversation about what I was so interested in,” she said. “They are only 10 blocks from where we want to create our garden.” Pat really summed it up for me, for Nancy, and for anyone who thinks having a variety of spiritual experiences is important. “It shows what can happen when you go to places and enjoy what they have,” she pointed out. “Listen and be open to how this can connect with your life, and connect with what you want to create.” To that, I say: AMEN! My Advice: Of course, I have only touched the surface about Mothers Trust and The Chicago Wisdom Project. For example, Mothers Trust features a wonderful retreat house. The rates are great: $35 for one night, or $50 for two nights, and a variety of groups are taking advantage of this opportunity. For example, the weekend after our visit, the retreat center and the entire Mothers Trust property was going to be filled with people from around the world who enjoy Dances of Universal Peace. This is only the tip of the iceberg for both organizations, so let your fingers do the walking, and explore at motherstrust.org, and chicagowisdomproject.org.

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER October 2015

October 2015 Overview The debates, arguments and the indecisions of Mercury retrograde continue into this month, though the Scales are already tipping one way and another. Many of us are of two minds. Those who are playing fair are winning points on the cosmic scale, if not in the legal system. The terms of the conversation are redefined when Mercury turns forward on the 9th, at the very beginning of Libra. Some of us have changed our minds, after researching, rethinking and talking things over (and over). Some negotiations have been intense, with more to come. Venus moves into Virgo on the 8th, joining Mars and Jupiter for some awesome displays from Nature and new developments in health and science fields. Pay attention to the wellbeing of your body, your personal temple of the spirit. This planetary trio comes into close alignment the last two weeks of the month, engineering effective responses to the situations at hand. Use this good energy and enjoy the results. Other juicy stuff includes the Sun moving into deep, dark Scorpio on the 23rd, right as Mercury in Libra interfaces with the Uranus-Pluto square. Radical developments necessitate action and meaningful, even life-changing conversations. Choices are made; votes are registered. The Messenger of the Gods spreads major headlines across the globe. Not everyone is happy with the news or the plan. The veils are thin, as October comes to a close, with Halloween, evoking invisible worlds and influences. NEW MOON —October 12 in LIBRA FULL MOON —October 27 in Scorpio-TAURUS

Thursday, October 1 A soft start to the month is suggested by a Void of Course Taurus Moon at 5:44am, opening the day with some level of dissatisfaction or even major grumpiness. We may be feeling a bit stuck in a rut, as in “I would rather be doing almost anything else today.” Some of us may be especially feeling the financial crunch. This sticky beginning gives way to busier moments under a Gemini Moon starting at 3:03pm, offering new options if we can open our minds. Still, we may rub up against a level of confrontation and limitation. Let it spur you on to realign priorities and take actical steps to move forward. 36 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

by Kelley Hunter

Friday, October 2 This is a busy day. Part of our job is to sort out the real news from the hype. Get a good early-bird start with your personal tuning up and tuning in practices. Then you’ll know when someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. People are not all on the same page today, so keep you vibe clean and clear. New ideas will inform upcoming decisions.

Saturday, October 3 A Void of Course Moon at 12:18pm gives us time to go back over things and think twice or thrice about issues, about who has said what, when and why. Sports contests may take a turn of momentum in favor of the team that’s behind. The Moon enters home-loving Cancer at 7:22pm, making for a good night to stay in and get cozy. Dinner with good friends or family makes it extra special.

Sunday, October 4 The Cancer Moon is weaving its personal webs today, pulling in the pieces needed to smooth out the way. Follow your flow as the day goes on. Don’t try for too much. Just cleaning your place could feel so good, as you get sorted out and ready for the week ahead. The evening hours contain some pressure. As the Moon plugs into Pluto in Capricorn, we may feel knocked out of complacency. Try not to foster arguments when you’re not really sure what you are feeling any way. There are be better ways to get the information you need. On the other hand, sometimes you do have to push for it. With Mercury retrograde, this may not be an effective moment to do so. Defenses are up. We clearly do need to make some changes. We get more clues tonight and tomorrow.

Monday, October 5 The Moon is Void of Course all day starting at 6:04am, jolted by a lightning bolt from Uranus that wakes us up. The early bird gets the worm, as they say. Feel the clean fresh start that you prepared for over the weekend and get up and out and do your thing. Carpe Diem, “seize the day,” is another good motto to apply. Overcome hesitancy and jump into the metaphorical waters. Do at least one thing that is new and different, to indicate to the Universe that you are with the Program. Anything could happen!

Tuesday, October 6

Sunday, October 11

The Moon enters fiery Leo at 3:31am, stirring up our creative juices and building the confidence to move forward, slowly but surely. The inevitability of collective change is clearly indicated as the Libra Sun is impacted by Pluto’s transformational necessity for environmental cooperation. Earth is speaking loud and clear. By coercion or conversion, big business tries to stand in the way, but can’t ignore icebergs that take the unwieldy ship down. Remember the Titanic. What is the equivalent story for today? Don’t ignore such signals in your life. We can’t always force things to be our way.

The Moon enters Libra at 3:46am, checking in with Mercury today, ready now to make some initial choices about how to move things forward. Conversations and dialogue are called for to check in and see how others are integrating the impact of these Venus and Mercury retrograde cycles. Some possibilities are clearly set aside as not worthwhile or useful. Some goodbyes are said. Tomorrow’s New Moon is a further reset button.

Wednesday, October 7 Express your ideas in the proper spirit of cooperation and all is well. Today’s tendency is to welcome interesting initiatives for solutions to pressing concerns. The Moon is Void of Course as of 4:10pm. Take time for a soft celebration after a productive day of co-creative conversations and new agreements. We are on the verge of moving ahead, as several planetary shifts line up in the next couple of days. Aren’t you feeling ready?

Thursday, October 8 After a long and interesting retrograde cycle, Venus finally moves back into Virgo at 12:30pm, completing the whole circle that “she” began around June Solstice. Back again to the Gateway of the Sphinx, where Leo the Lion meets the Great Goddess Virgo, Venus moves into this earth sign of refinement and perfect proportion. What sphinx-like question have you been re-evaluating over this summer? Time to put this values clarification exercise into practice. Reset your priorities according to the emotional intelligence of Venus. Tune in to a precise Moon-Venus conjunction at 3:01pm for last notes on the cycle.

Friday, October 9 The Moon in Virgo is busy as a beaver, dancing with Neptune, Mars and Jupiter. Mercury turns to forward motion at 9:58am, at the Equinox point at the very beginning of Libra. This might feel like starting over in terms of choices that confront us. After considering various points of view, we are preparing to make some decisions—not hastily, but with careful judgment, and any necessary discussion or alerts to others. This very full day and week ends with Void of Course Moon at 5:12pm, just in time for happy hour at this significant crossroads. Are you feeling happy, perhaps even a sober kind of happy that is content, calm and at ease? The best decisions are made from this place.

Monday, October 12 NEW MOON, 7:06pm CDT at 19 Libra 20 A mixed array of planetary dynamics makes for a pungent, salty but sweet, New Moon cycle. Uranus is particularly electrical, with lightning bolts that split trees and relationships. Earthquakes, possibly literal and certainly political, awaken public awareness to an unprecedented level of social change initiative. Compassion necessitates practical service to create new arrangements that have longterm impact on the way we live. Artistic imagery stimulates a high aesthetic and sets stylistic trends. The New Moon begins an extended Void of Course cycle that last well into tomorrow, giving us plenty of time to consider the implications of this powerful day and feel our way into the growing light of this Moon cycle.

Tuesday, October 13 The Moon is Void of Course all the way through the afternoon, moving into deep, dark Scorpio at 4:38pm. As we digest the impact of yesterday’s New Moon, we engage in some serious thinking and significant conversations. Further decisions become clear. We contemplate strategies to implement them. Cooperation is needed. A promising line-up of helpful planets is moving into position. This bodes well for progress over the next week and through the rest of the month.

Wednesday, October 14 A lot gets done today. We take things step by step and make significant inroads into projects by 7:58pm, when the Moon goes Void of Course. We are feeling good about how things are lining up. We’re on course to sustain the momentum tomorrow by working on the details, while keeping the main agenda in focus.

Thursday, October 15 Another all day Void of Course Moon keeps us on task, following up on yesterday’s promising activity. Many details easily fall in to place. We don’t have to try too hard. It is best not to push or force things.

Saturday, October 10 An all-day Void of Course Moon indicates a day to settle down and sort things out. We need it. Do what your intelligent body suggests, including exercise, a visit to a wellness center or spa, and time in Nature. Or just catch up with small stuff, so you can de-stress and allow your mind to quietly consider without arguing with itself.

Just by maintaining a positive attitude and continuing to put one foot in front of the other, we are in a good place, moving at a good pace, allowing the natural course of events to unfold.

Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 37

Friday, October 16 The Moon enters goal-oriented Sagittarius at 4:18am. Get ready, get set: go! Keep the target in your view throughout the day. By evening, we have gotten so many ducks in a row that, finally, we may run out of steam and are ever-so-ready to call it quits. It is clearly time for a delightful TGIF break. An indulgent mood may lead to romance. For some the tendency to go a little overboard in addictive indulgences s too great a temptation. If that’s you, you’ll likely pay for it tomorrow.

Saturday, October 17 If you overdid it last night, it may take the morning to get on track. Was it worth it? Maybe, maybe not. Generally there is strong motivation for getting things in order, cleaning, filing, finishing up important tasks leftover from the week. Then use the day to get out and moving. Good technique and body smarts are winning ways in sports endeavors, with some weekend contests going into overtime. Restlessness and excitement build up into the afternoon. Inspiration strikes and surprises are pulled out of some hats. High energy tonight sends many out on the town or off on other adventures.

Sunday, October 18 The Moon is VoC as of 3:48am, but that doesn’t slow down the energizer bunny types that dance until dawn. Sunday isn’t the day off it used to be, so some folks will find their extra wind and keep on keeping on. The tone changes when the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:52pm. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, this Moon shift will seriously slow down the momentum. Take stock of where things stand, and consult your plans to see if they—and you—are on track. Can you be realistic while still being idealistic, keeping the positive goal in mind? So much can get done spurred on by this kind of motivation—clear vision and hands on the wheel.

Monday, October 19 A lot goes on today, with important conversations taking place. Open your listening ear, so you clearly hear key points rather than blocking them out. Other people may be seeing things differently than you. Their point of view can turn out to be quite useful, and may be necessary to consider in relation to your plans. We can approach turning points with ease when we are relaxed and in the flow, rather than tight and controlling. It may be best in the long run if things don’t go the way you wanted them to. What a concept! Seek and offer support and a helping hand. Attending to one thing at a time with awareness of changing priorities keeps us on track on what could otherwise be a challenging day.

Tuesday, October 20 With your feet on the ground and your eye on the goal, new developments are more likely to promote forward movement. Take moments as needed to maintain an efficient calm. Some people might throw a spoke into the works today, but that doesn’t have to upset you or halt your rhythm. A time-out might be called for when the Moon is Void of Course from 3:31pm to 8:38pm. No 38 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

need to push the river, just step back. Deep breathing is very relaxing and improves our mental state. The Moon entering Aquarius will give us the perspective we need to re-engage. Tomorrow is another day, indeed. Wednesday,

October 21

Most of us are refreshed and ready for this highly social day, filled with meetings, interesting encounters and conversations, phone calls, internet and all. Information is circulating in multi-dimensions. Networking is the prime time activity, horizontal and vertical. The evening news may report on more positive stories than usual. If not, seek some out and send out your own. Let’s be Good News Bears. Facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. are likely set records for the high level of buzz. New platforms are coming out every week, not to mention the audio buzz from podcasts and soundcloud activity, et.al. What wavelength are you on?

Thursday, October 22 The buzz in still on, likely ramped up by today’s exceptional developments. Much is good news, then later in the day quite profound and globe-changing reports come to light. The close alignment of the mythic threesome of Venus, Mars and Jupiter is quite an intimate dance, joined flower devas, devic fairies, dryads, nyaids and other various kingdoms of Nature, as well as belly dancers and other divine dancers. Let your body respond and dance along. “The Earth upon her celestial spindle winds her ecstasy-producing dance,” as poet Kathleen Raine says it. The Moon starts Void of Course for less than an hour at 11:22pm. SCORPIO, the SCORPION

Friday, October 23 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, you intense Scorpios. The Moon enters sea-sign Pisces at 12:18am. Near high noon at 12:47pm, the Sun plunges into the powerful waterfalls of Scorpio. We can feel a reverberation of ecstasy still in the aethers. Be gentle with yourself and others today. Kindness is the today’s winning ticket to sublime moments that somehow elude the daily grind, imbuing mundane tasks with archetypal meaning. Go with the flow and allow some amazing influences to pervade the Earth realm.

Saturday, October 24 After the energetic tsunami yesterday, the Moon goes Void of Course early, at 6:18am, leaving us in an extraordinary state of mind. “Bring down the Moon,” as the witches know how, on a day when practical realities and a sense of service impells us into action. Maybe there really is a tsunami, or some such major event that claims our attention. It may be a moment that reveals the majesty of Nature. If you are really tuned in, you can feel it coming and meet it with a full heart. How do we know when we are taking on too much or sacrificing ourselves in an unhealthy ways? Is the cause that you are taking on yours or not yours? It’s hard to know just where to draw that line in such times as these.

Sunday, October 25

Thursday, October 29

The Moon jumpstarts into Aries at 1:22am, revving up the engines as the day dawns. There is a most intriguing melange of planetary dynamics today that stirs the imagination, delights, surprises—and challenges. The great question to answer, in the midst of whatever you do today: what are you doing to do to bring your dreams into reality? Note: Pay attention if you need to know that daylight time is ending in the British Isles. Time zones are crisscrossed constantly. The web has none.

Monday, October 26 A wake-up call takes some of us by surprise around 5:57am. Already the Moon goes Void of Course at 7:25am, leaving us with a lot of questions about what is going on. We likely feel the need to talk to someone, maybe several someones. Be aware that some conversations are likely to be at cross-purposes. Don’t let this overly dismay you. Maintain your own clarity the best to you can. Take what time you need to do so, consulting with your inner guidance.

The Moon enters Gemini at 1:24am, already disseminating important information early in the morning. “Reality” may be in jeopardy by afternoon when we are distracted into a dreamtime that may, indeed, become the new normal. Take the temperature of how that would work in your life, without becoming divorced from your body. Maintain your grounding and remember to eat good, nourishing meals.

Friday, October 30 The Gemini Moon interfaces with so many planets today that we may be in a bit of a whirl, like contradancing. The Moon’s most important interface is with the triple conjunction in Virgo that has characterized so much of this month. Pagan-leaning practices particularly thrive amidst these earth-based teachings coming right from the source. The Gemini Moon invites us to articulate, cognate and communicate them in some way. If you have ever thought to communicate directly with Nature, this is an ideal time to do so. Animal communicators, shamans and others are doing just this. The lines are wide open, even after hours when the Moon goes Void of Course at 9:52pm.

Saturday, October 31 Tuesday, October 27

The Moon enters gentle Cancer at 4:09am for an All Hallows Eve best shared close to home with neighbors of good will. This is a special moment, one of the Celtic cross-quarter days that signal halftime in the seasonal calendar. We are now half way between fall and winter. Tonight the veils are thin and spirits are abroad. Hang out with the friendly ones.

FULL MOON, 7:05am CDT at 3 Scorpio-TAURUS The Moon moves into earth sign Taurus at 1:07am, coming to fullness a few hours later. We are still enjoying the close trio of Jupiter, Venus and Mars and accompanying special effects of Nature. We can best tune in to its simple subtleties with our subliminal senses. There is a delicate, nuanced healing opportunity on this Moon, one that arises from the inside out. Trust the inherent wisdom of your body and listen to its messages, with no imposition of rationality or ignore-ance. Body workers are very busy today.

Remember to set your clocks back before turning off the lights. Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am, November 1. Personally, I find this bi-annual shift of the clock disruptive and would to abolish it if it came up for a vote. How about you?

Wednesday, October 28 The Taurus Moon is deeply in synch with the lovely alignment in Virgo. As we appreciate the beauty, power and generosity of Nature in its uncanny variety, we are supported from a very deep place of connection. Imagine that roots grow down from your feet to the Earth’s core and then, like tree, feel the vital sap rises up through your trunk into the branching of consciousness that reaches out into the heavens. You are that tree. The heaven pours down blessings through you back into the Earth. Open to these divine currents and feel your strength and verve revitalized. The Void of Course Moon at 10:20am gives us the whole day to explore these currents of energy. How are you inspired to apply this energy into your daily activities?

Why do we Fall? So We Learn To Get Back On by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT You are never a real horse person until you fall off and get back on. At least that is what I have been told my entire life. Working with horses both on the ground and under saddle can be dangerous; bones can be broken, and people have even lost their lives. Yet that doesn’t stop people from riding and loving them. Everyone falls yet not everyone is able to get back up. So why do we fall? Why do we have to feel pain and frustration followed by the fear and trepidation that it might happen again? It hurts to hit the ground! Who would want to feel that again? Something worse might happen next time. These are the thoughts that begin to fill our heads when something bad happens to us. So what is it that makes us resilient enough to get back up? I was told after the first time I fell off a horse that we fall so that we learn to stand back up, brush the dust and dirt away, and get back on the horse to try again. I was going over my first major jump. Of course it may have only been three feet, but in my head, it was at least four and a half feet high. I lined the horse up perfectly but took off just a half stride too late, so when the horse landed I was catapulted right off. Funny thing was that I landed on my feet, then my bum, then my head. It was quite a graceful landing if you can imagine. The impact was ferocious. I had no idea being thrown would feel like that. I even cracked my helmet. As I was lying on the ground, the horse was looking down at me as if to ask, “What are you doing down there?” I was none the worse for wear so I jumped up, still pulsing with adrenaline reverberating through my body, and climbed back on. The way my trainer acted it was as if that was the only thing to do. She asked if anything was broken, complimented my unique landing, and put her hands together in a leg up and over gesture. So I rode the horse around again for the approach, and went over with a picture perfect landing. It was at that moment that I felt total exhilaration for the accomplishment, though there was still some lingering fear. This begs the question about how important is it to get back up after you fall? Why do we continue to feel fear? We all have times in our lives where scary things, unpredictable things happen that create fear. Horses are attacked by predators in the wild on a daily basis, yet they return to grazing moments after the danger passes. You will see them tremble after a traumatic event and shake as if drying their coat after a bath. In a wild herd, if the horse held onto the fear, and lived their life in a state of anxiety they would die. Humans seem to hold their fear in their body. Among researchers who study somatics, there is a widely held belief that we hold that fear in our bodies. When we hurt part of 40 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

our body, we tend to continue holding in the muscles surrounding it even long after the pain has passed. The emotion of fear becomes locked deep in the tissue as if in anticipation that pain will come again if the muscles let loose. This holding in can create long term chronic pain as we move awkwardly, and the muscles in our body try to compensate. We sometimes also lose trust; trust in the world around us. We live in anticipation that whatever happened will in some way happen again but unexpectedly. This creates anxiety, and the amygdala releases stress hormones in response. We then learn to live in a state of complete anxiety, and the amygdala responds, secreting more stress hormones, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of anxiety, and hypervigilance, and the resulting emotion is fear. This would be like a horse living in flight mode 24 hours a day. Additionally, if you subscribe to the belief of neural congruency or resonance, then everyone that is around when we are in that state feels this hyperawareness and fear, including animals. The theory of resonance states that when we spend enough time with other people and animals, we begin to resonate with their emotions. If the emotions are fear-based, then others may choose to disengage from relationships, making us feel even more isolated. So far fear has brought physical pain, anxiety, lack of trust, and potentially isolation. This can happen in different degrees to anyone who experiences adverse experiences or trauma, from the simplest fall off a horse to significant trauma. If we fall to get back up, then why are there some that don’t get up, and some that do? How can we pick ourselves up and overcome the fear? There is no easy way to answer this since every human has different degrees of resiliency. Researchers like Dr. Brene Brown, Dr. Cal Crow, and Dr. Norman Garmezy have taken a look at what makes some people more likely to dust off and get back in the saddle, and why others are stuck in fear. One thing that is common across the board is a positive attitude before an event happens. Those who have a general positive outlook are more likely to recover from an event faster, and with less long term impact than someone who is depressed. Other traits include solid support systems and encouragement, an overall outlook that adverse events are temporary, flexibility, and a tendency toward action. Courage is not the absence of fear, but is that ability to act in spite of it. We can cultivate those resilience skills by learning how to breathe more fully, operating from a place of gratitude, learning to release physical fear through yoga and activity. If we are still carrying around old adverse childhood experiences, we can learn to release them by adopting and practicing

those same skills. Riding can be a fabulous way to release old fear. Horses can be amazing and supportive guides through the process, as they don’t judge and respond to our emotions holding a mirror to those things we choose not to see. The act of riding opens up the body to release fear and trauma on a cellular level through the movement of their gaits, and our bodies’ response to the movement. They allow us to develop courage in the face of fear. When we learn to physically and mentally pick ourselves up and get back on the metaphorical horse, we strengthen those skills of resilience. When we act in spite of our fear, we are less likely to

hold onto it after the event, and are better able to shake off the excess adrenaline hormones and return to grazing just like our herd of wild horses. So the next time you fall, remind yourself that it is an opportunity to pick yourself back up. Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT is a speaker and author on experiential and nature-based learning. Ayurveda is the Indian medicinal system and way of life that has been around for at least 2000 years if not more. It is considered a lifestyle, really for it pervades all aspects of one’s life. In Ayurveda, the approach to health is a holistic one that cannot leave out any aspect of the individual, whether it’s physical well-being or psychological, emotional, etc. Ayur means life in Sanskrit and Veda means wisdom. Ayurveda is an all-encompassing system that truly pervades the Eastern way of thought, in ways that include medicine, emotional implications of what we consume as food, what we encounter on a daily basis in our lives, and even astrological influences. I have been reading about Ayurveda and have also taken it into practice until recently, when I kind of put it to the wayside. In Ayurveda, there are three body types that have to do with elements. The three body types (doshas), or elemental constitutions are: Vata- Air Pitta- Fire Kapha- Earth

We have one main constitution but we are basically a combination of all three. It’s just in differing quantities. I am predominantly Vata (Air), then Pitta (Fire), then the last is Kapha (Earth). The beauty of the Ayurvedic body type is that it also pinpoints your mental/emotional body. It is a physical representation of you, which also tells us that the way we are made, our very constitutions, body types and preferences, tendencies, has to do with our spiritual bodies. The physical is just the last representation of that. It is a sketch of what we are on different levels. Every individual has all three elements in their constitution. It is important to know which one you are most of, because it not only

has physical implications and understanding of some underlying bodily issues, but it also speaks of our emotional constitution. For example, Vata (air) relates to the intellect and mind, Pitta (fire) relates to the digestion and passion, and Kapha, which is a mix of water and Earth, is more based in the emotional realm, but also as an Earthy, grounding element. The following are characteristics of all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). Which one you have more of determines your primary body type/constitution.

VATA:

42 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

Thin build, lanky

Typically dry skin and hair

Joints protrude, can crack

Fast-minded, changes their mind easily

Constipation can be an issue

Attention to detail

Impulsive

Cold body temperature

PITTA: •

Usually warm body temperature

Passionate, short fuse

Tendency for hair loss

Can be prone to acne

Medium build body type

Competitive

Very good concentration

Strong digestion

KAPHA: •

Planned and organized

Calm

Slow paced and relaxed

Larger body type

Stable and loyal

Gets possessive when issues arise

Issues with sinus and damp weather

Lots of patience

Hair and skin are soft

If you associated with one of these more than the others, than that is your main constitution. It is important to remember we all have all three doshas as part of our constitution but some are more predominant than others. It is also said the seasons will affect your dosha, For example, in the summer, your constitution may change to more Vata, or Pitta may get aggravated (due to the heat). So it is important to use this information wisely and find out more about your type, what it means to you and how you can use it to your advantage in your fitness routine, or perhaps your diet or spiritual practice. Knowledge is power if put to good use. Once you find out your most active dosha, you can also begin to see how your emotions and food choices are linked to it. Behaviors will change your dosha. What we put into our body, our exercise routine, even our sedentary jobs will impact our constitution. It is not always a stagnant, given constitution, although your tendency will remain toward a predominant one. I believe these will change with our behaviors, with our lifestyles, and with age. I recommend reading more on your dosha type and finding out how to balance all of them, for there are many ways to do so, with herbs and food being the top choices. POWER OF A Tarot: THE CARD SPREAD by Vincent Pitisci If you are interested in reading Tarot cards you will ultimately want to learn how to apply them. The Tarot cards can open up paths to a specific goal in ways not previously seen. This brings us to card spreads. Card spreads create a way of looking into a question with a deeper focus than conventional thinking will allow. The card spread shown here is the classic Celtic Cross, which can help us find answers to any question we want to explore in a more thorough way than smaller spreads can do. Each of the ten positions on the Celtic Cross represents an element of the overall question at hand, affording a way to break the question apart into components that can then be looked at specifically—components such as strengths, weaknesses, hopes, and outside influences. I am not going to go into the meanings each position holds. I want to explain the importance of breaking the question apart into segments using a card spread. What is important to understand is that the Celtic Cross, like any other Tarot card spread, follows a pattern that is independent of the actual cards drawn on any given occasion. The pattern is comprised of fixed elements that have been proven to be useful to any question asked. These elements do not change from one reading to another. They remain the same, whether the question at the moment pertains to love, money, or some other life pursuit. The Tarot cards help us find the answers we need as they are placed into the spread’s fixed positions. They represent the answers to the specific aspect of the question they are placed into. In my way of doing the Celtic Cross the number 8 position 46 Conscious Community -OCTOBER 2015

represents the timing of the issue in question. Is it time to act or time to wait? If the Knight of Swords were placed here it would represent action; a time to act. If the Four of Cups were placed in number 8 position it would represent patience; a time to wait. Hence, the seventy-eight Tarot cards are a set of connection-rich concepts that can be seen as an idea generator. Again, each one of the cards can help find answers to any question asked of them. The card spread is a question broken apart into its specific aspects or concerns. This is an important factor when learning to read the cards. The cards are not the positions themselves. The cards represent the answers to those aspects of the question. The meaning of each card cannot really be defined in a fixed way. Each card’s meaning changes as the questions asked of them change. And any of the cards, placed into any position of a question asked, can help find good answers. They help us find these answers through a process of association— the association we make between the particular card we draw and the position it is placed into in the card spread. A card reading is thus a way of forcing the mind to make connections between the card and its position’s meaning. The question is the position; the answer is the random Tarot card. Making associations between a fixed element for the question and a random stimulus for the answer today is called conceptual blending. Conceptual blending is a common creative-thinking technique based on the way the genius mind looks at a question, which is divided into sections called elements. To these fixed elements is added a random stimulus (in our case, in the form of a Tarot card). The blend between what is fixed and what is random results in innovative and intuitive ideas—and in insights that would not normally be seen.

This way of seeking solutions cannot be achieved with conventional thought. It is an application that gives powerful depth to the question asked and to the answers received. Great thinkers throughout history have achieved their discoveries using such a technique. People such as Da Vinci, Galileo, Darwin, Ford, Edison, and Einstein all have used this method of finding answers to the questions that compelled them. To repeat, here are the steps involved in the dynamics of using the established pattern of a card spread such as the Celtic Cross in a reading: • • •

Breaking the presenting question apart into segments represented by the fixed positions of the spread Adding a random stimulus to each segment in the form of the specific cards drawn Making associations between the two

Throughout the process, the aim is to approach the random stimulus of each card with the intention to discover how it can modify, change, improve, reverse, or enhance the segment of the question it represents in some manner.

Gutenberg’s first printing press was realized when he watched two men working a wine press. Galileo discovered the principles of a pendulum clock by watching a priest swing an incense filled thurible back and forth during mass. The Hubble Telescope was created by looking at the way a showerhead oscillates. The first heat-seeking missile was discovered by looking at things found in the desert— specifically the sidewinder rattlesnake that seeks it prey through body heat. Conceptually blending something random to your objective brings new ideas. And the Tarot cards give us meaningful answers in the same fashion. Random meanings become suggestions towards our goals. In summary, although today’s creative consultants don’t limit themselves to this particular approach to looking into a question, it is probably the most commonly and successfully used. Both they and the Tarot reader use the same techniques to find answers not normally perceived through conventional thought. Both seek to find answers to future objectives—and through the technique I’ve been describing, both can effectively predict future results. The difference between the two? The Tarot reader uses a deck of seventy-eight classic images as a random stimulus tool. Creative consultants use the world around them as a random stimulus tool. Both work very well. And both can offer an infinite amount of possible answers.

Creative consultants use this technique to help Fortune 500 companies and other major institutions find innovative solutions. If you research the terms conceptual blending and creative thinking, you will find that the applications used in those processes are identical to that used by the Tarot card reader.

The Tarot has stayed with us for centuries because it works. Now we can understand why it works. It is based on what today would be called a very intuitive creative thinking technique called conceptual blending.

The technique of placing random Tarot cards into segments of a question was created centuries ago by a few key minds of genius. It seems that Antoine de Gebelin (1725–1784) and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (1738–1791) launched this successful application in the late eighteenth century. The Tarot cards’ unexplainable knack of finding useful answers to questions has always been a mystery. But with today’s resources and knowledge, this uncanny knack— which has worked successfully for centuries—can now be explained.

Vincent Pitisci is the author of Genius of the Tarot: A Guide to Divination with the Tarot and The Essential Tarot: Unlocking the Mystery (both available in paperback through Amazon). His contact information and services can be found at www.pitisci. com. Pitisci lives and maintains a private practice in Chicago’s southwest suburb of Berwyn, IL.

So, if you already read Tarot cards, pat yourself on the back, because what you have been doing is learning to think like a genius! If you are just starting out, you will be finding capabilities the cards can bring in ways you may have never before understood. Today the mystery of the Tarot reading can be explained. The Tarot card reader does the exact same thing as today’s creative consultants do: identify important aspects of a question, add a random stimulus to each aspect, and then conceptually blend them together to find answers in the form of innovative solutions. And why is this done? To make a prediction regarding a future objective. Useful answers are what make accurate predictions, if they are followed. The Tarot reader, following a centuries-old custom, and today’s up-to-date creative consultants both predict the future using the same identical application, merely with different terminology. The Afterlife Healing Circle: How Anyone Can Contact the Other Side, by Candace L. Talmadge and Jana L. Simons (New Page Books, $14.99, Paperback)

The Spiritual Awakening Guide: Kundalini, Psychic Abilities, and the Conditioned Layers of Reality, by Mary Mueller Shutan (Findhorn Press, $19.95, Paperback)

One misunderstood spiritual practice, a séance, can actually pose real dangers to those who abuse it. Now, Candace L. Talmadge and Jana L. Simons share with readers how to peacefully communicate with deceased loved ones and those who have not been born using a healing circle. Based on decades of study and experience, Talmadge and Simons provide safe and proven techniques for communicating with those who have passed on. They provide information such as when and where to hold healing circles, how to further develop your intuition, and how to avoid the possible dangers of a séance.

This practical guidebook on spiritual awakening covers just about everything: from the first steps on a spiritual path to enlightenment, as well as information about the different types of awakenings, ranging from mild to dramatic, that we endure. Mary Mueller Shutan uses the concept of twelve layers that hide our awakened state to explain how to overcome hindrances such as family, past lives, archetypal, cultural, and cosmic layers of energy. Shutan explains how to move through each unique layer to gain an understanding of where we are each at on our spiritual paths. This book provides a new vision of how we are meant to be in this world, as awakened beings inside human bodies.

Can’t Fight Fate, by Lisa N. Edwards (Lisa N. Edwards, $7.99 on Amazon, Paperback) Nikki thought she had her life mapped out. She saw herself getting a career, finding a partner, starting a family. It all seemed simple, that was, until she went with a friend to see a psychic who changed her life. The psychic foretells of her soul mate, a “Mr.Hollywood” she will meet in her future…whom Nikki comes face to face with 17 years later. The psychic warned her that if she chased him, he would flee. But how is she supposed to live with this information without telling him they are meant to be together? Between Now and When: How My Death Made My Life Worth Living, by Richard House, MD (New Page Books, $15.99, Paperback) When Dr. Richard House was only a teen, he heard a prophecy: a voice telling him that he would die at the age of 33. At just that age, House found himself at death’s door. After completely surrendering, he was led into the fourth dimension, where his body was magically healed. This was only the start of a journey of self-discovery and expanded awareness. This book will take you around the world, open your heart, and help you to understand why suffering is an important part of gods work.

Seven Cups of Consciousness: Change Your Life by Connecting to the Higher Realms, by Aleya Dao (New World Library, $15.95, Paperback) In this book, Aleya Dao shows readers how realizing that you are actually a spiritual being having a human experience can change your life. Dao teaches readers how turning inward can benefit your outer world and that with the help of energies such as the higher self and angels, a new world of purpose and joy becomes available. This book gives step-by-step instructions built around “cups of consciousness” that are created to give readers access to other realms and all of the resources within them. Also included are eleven downloadable audio meditations to help readers through the processes.
