SEASON FINALE Still, I must say that this year has been very remarkable for me. In addition to getting to know a lot of wonderful, like-minded people, I learned a lot. The best part is that it has all helped me become better, wiser, and more intelligent. Not to show off, but I can really see how much I have changed from the person I was, and my closest friends have confirmed this as well, for which I am truly grateful. Closing in 2023, in 2024, I want to work harder, interact with more intelligent people, focus on improving myself as a person, and explore new areas to broaden my actual knowledge. From a professional standpoint, this issue is particularly noteworthy before we wrap up the year since we have made an effort to compile a list of some of the most outstanding logistics leaders. AJEX AND MODON COLLABORATE TO EXPAND SAUDI-BASED LOGISTICS OFFERING WITH 6,000 SQUARE METRES OF ADDITIONAL STORAGE

A

JEX Logistics Services, a Middle East specialist in express logistics and Industrial solutions, is proud to announce a new partnership agreement with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones – MODON. The agreement will see AJEX operate expanded logistics services from the burgeoning industrial epicentre of Dammam. Marking yet another significant step in AJEX’s growth since its launch in 2021, the agreement will see the Saudiheadquartered logistics firm operate warehousing facilities over a 6,000 sqm area at MODON. SAUDIA AND RIYADH AIR SIGN A STRATEGIC COOPERATION MOU AS PART OF AN EXPANSIVE AGREEMENT

T

he national flag carriers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saudia and Riyadh Air signed a Strategic Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding as part of an expansive agreement to include codeshare flight, signifying a significant milestone moment of collaborative strength in the KSA aviation ecosystem. The MOU is the first considerable agreement between the two airlines, and it is set to lay the foundation for further cooperation in the future. Along with strengthening the broader Saudi aviation ecosystem, the collaboration is intended to offer a comprehensive range of benefits for

guests travelling globally to and from Saudi Arabia and those travelling domestically within the Kingdom. As part of the agreement, guests of both carriers will take full advantage of each airline’s worldwide network through a comprehensive interline and codeshare agreement, allowing guests to connect seamlessly between sectors operated by Saudia or Riyadh Air. This means members of each carrier’s loyalty program can earn points or credits when travelling on codeshare services used by the other. This will be followed by a more comprehensive loyalty agreement in which guests can accrue or redeem points and receive elite-level benefits across both carrier’s global networks.

Saudia CEO, Capt. Ibrahim Koshy commented, “We’re delighted to be working alongside Riyadh Air and look forward to seeing another Saudi carrier supporting the national aviation strategy and the Kingdom’s objectives in tourism. This historic moment is when we join forces to serve guests travelling from and to the Kingdom. Saudia and Riyadh Air will positively disrupt the industry, so we are proud to sign this MOU that signifies our partnership intent.” Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas said, “The MoU signing of this strategic collaboration shows a solid statement of intent from both airlines. Riyadh Air and Saudia will play a significant part in the growth of travel tourism within the Kingdom, so having the national carriers working side-by-side is the best way to accelerate and manage this growth. We are confident that Riyadh Air will raise the bar in air travel, and cooperation with Saudia will help us achieve this as we prepare for take-off in 2025.” Benefits will be announced with more comprehensive details available for guests’ booking flights on Saudia or Riyadh Air when Riyadh Air is set to launch its operations in 2025.

LUMI AND MACHINESTALK SIGN A TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT WORTH SAR 28 MILLION

T

o revolutionise vehicle sharing and enable digital transformation, Lumi car rental company (“Lumi” or the “Company”) has signed a five-year SAR 28 million agreement with MachinesTalk, a leading IoT solutions provider in Saudi Arabia. The deal enables the upgrade of fleet management through technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in collaboration with the satellitesupported car-sharing platform AnyCar. AnyCar will transform Lumi’s fleet into a digital sharing ecosystem. This ensures complete control over vehicles and provides an enhanced self-service experience for ‘Lumi’ customers. Additionally, it guarantees maximum utilisation of cars, enhances operational

Dubai’s meteoric prominence as a global logistics hub stem from its strategic planning, geographic advantage, and visionary leadership. Over the past few decades, the city’s logistics sector has emerged as a powerhouse, transforming Dubai from a small trading port to one of the world’s most vital logistical and commercial centres. Several key influential factors have prompted Dubai’s remarkable evolution into a thriving global logistics hub:

The Traditional Model to System Integration There are several steps in the warehouse automation value chain as depicted below. Most warehouse automation system integrators cover the span from system OEM all the way to after-market service (as depicted in the table below). One of the reasons for this vertical integration is due to the high level of commoditization of traditional fixed warehouse automation hardware (e.g. shuttles, conveyors, sorters etc). A lack of differentiation and a relatively slow pace of innovation has shifted the buy-vs-build decision firmly to the ‘build’ side. For example, Witron acquired FAS in 2005 in order to bring OEM capabilities in-house. On the other hand, system OEMs, struggling in a low margin business, developed integration

18 | LOGISTICS NEWS ME | DECEMBER 2023

capabilities in the pursuit of higher margins. For example, TGW – which was originally a system OEM, developed integration capabilities. This led to the current state of the industry where the bulk of revenues are generated from OEM system integrators. In recent years, we have seen several third-party system OEMs enter the market, developing highly modular and standardized solutions that tend to be based around robotics (as opposed to traditional conveyance), such as Exotec, AutoStore, Dexterity, and Berkshire Grey. This is shifting the buy-vs-build decision for system integrators in favour of ‘buy’ due to the rapid rate of innovation surrounding these technologies, coupled with

he industry value chain is changing. We’re seeing a shift away from highly customized fixed automation solutions to more modular, configurable, and standardized systems, like AutoStore and OPEX. the lack of in-house robotic expertise. Because the market is changing rapidly, incumbent system integrators don’t want to bet big on a single acquisition target or look to develop technologies in-house because end-customer preferences may have shifted by that time. This leads to the growth of pureplay system integrators, which focus primarily on integrating hardware from third-party system OEMs like AutoStore and Exotec. For example, in the top 10 system integrators in the US last year (2022), nearly all OEM System Integrators lost market share, while the opposite was true for pure-play system integrators. Even ‘conventional’ OEM System Integrators are starting to partner with more system OEMs. For example, Dematic – the quintessential OEM System Integrator – partners with AutoStore, Dexterity, and Quicktron. The trend towards system integrators partnering with system OEMs is on the rise.

The novel systems developed by AutoStore, Exotec, OPEX, and other third-party system OEMs are highly modular and configurable. This contrasts with legacy equipment (often conveyance-based), which tends to be

highly customized and bespoke for each client. The shift from customized to standardized is, in effect, shifting the value creation from the build phase to the design phase.

The Value Chain is Shifting Much of the value is created in the integration/build phase because it’s often highly customized and requires extensive software and electrical and mechanical engineering competencies to build these systems. Without extensive knowledge and skills, providing a bespoke automation solution would be challenging. However, the relative ease with which these novel third-party solutions can be ‘connected’ together is lowering the barrier to entry for system integrators, which can potentially erode margins for system integration over time. Furthermore, companies like SVT Robotics are accelerating this trend, making it easier than ever to integrate third-party solutions using simple and intuitive user interfaces. As we mentioned, this is shifting the ‘value’ from the build phase to the design phase. This isn’t to say that system integration will become ‘easy’. However, the trend towards greater standardization means that there’s less customized code required to integrate various systems, and the ‘plug-and-play’ nature of these modular and configurable systems means that there’s less of a requirement for extensive electrical and mechanical engineering competencies. As we start to see the integration of more third-party systems, the need for system orchestration and execution becomes increasingly critical. Much value will be created in connecting and orchestrating these disparate systems. The shift towards using thirdparty system OEMs also raises the question of who will own the aftermarket service margins. OEM system

integrators have typically captured most of the MRO and other after-market service revenue. However, we’ll likely see more System OEMs capturing the MRO revenue, particularly regarding spare parts. A Universal Phenomenon The impact robotics has on the value chain isn’t limited to the warehouse automation market. Across Interact Analysis’s various research areas, we’ve observed a typical pattern across sectors experiencing innovation disruption. Value creation shifts downstream to the vendors developing the innovative systems, while vertically integrated participants upstream in the value chain experience value erosion. Take the automotive sector, for example. Historically, OEMs like VW and Volvo would manufacture most vehicle components, including the powertrain. However, with the shift

towards electrification, we’ve seen a trend whereby the tier-1 suppliers are leading innovation and capturing more value by developing new and improved batteries and electric motors. As such, the ‘value’ OEMs offer erodes as the tier-1 suppliers charge more of it. Going Full-Circle However, nothing lasts forever. At some point, the differentiation rate will slow,

and hardware will become commoditized. At this point, we’ll likely see two things: 1) system OEMs developing integration capabilities to chase higher margin opportunities and 2) incumbent system integrators acquiring system OEMs. The result will be an industry dominated by vertically integrated system integrators, taking us full circle. URBAN TRANSPORTATION Why urban planners need to think about communities, not cars?

Earlier this month, Stockholm announced a plan to ban diesel-andgas-powered vehicles from entering large parts of its city centre in one of the world’s most far-reaching efforts to combat automobile emissions. It also potentially marks the beginning of the end for a form of transport that came to define urban landscapes. Indeed, one survey of US cities showed that downtowns devote an astonishing 50 to 60 percent of their space to vehicles. While planners haven’t questioned this situation for many decades, today, there is a growing environmental and social movement to re-imagine urban transport systems with people Data optimization Any discussion about the future of transport in most cities still begins with optimising car transportation, and traffic data analytics is critical to successful outcomes. Sensors and cameras capture vast amounts of data about traffic flow, pedestrian movement, and public transport usage. When properly analyzed, this data

provides city planners with real-time insights into the needs and patterns of its residents. These tactics can yield impressive results. For instance, San Francisco’s SFpark project utilizes sensors to gauge parking availability and adjust prices in real time, ensuring optimal parking occupancy and reducing driver search time. Sensors have also been deployed in the UAE, especially at traffic lights, where they activate the lights in response to traffic, helping optimize traffic flow and collecting data. Zurich also uses traffic lights to slow the movement of cars to the centre once it starts getting congested and then speed up their exit in the afternoons. In Singapore, vehicles are charged based on road congestion levels, effectively reducing peak-hour traffic. Singapore also utilizes data analytics to anticipate and manage public transport demand. Moving forward, there is a lot more we data analysts can do with the correct information. Future solutions Along with pricing, taxation, and initiatives such as car park charges based on peak demand, many other tools can improve efficiencies. For example, 60 per cent of Copenhagen’s residents now commute by bicycle, thanks to continuous infrastructure development.

Many cities, particularly in Europe and the US, have pedestrianized vital areas, which has helped revitalize areas lost to traffic. Two famous examples are New York’s Time Square and London’s Trafalgar Square. This approach can also be implemented on a more flexible basis. Bogotá, the Colombian capital, introduced ‘Ciclovía’, an initiative that closes around 120 km of streets to cars every Sunday, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to take over. Other methods to restrict traffic flows include London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone, which has also led to a five times faster pollution reduction in London than the rest of the UK. In the coming years, combining new technologies and sustainability goals will redefine urban transport. Autonomous Vehicles could reduce the need for personal vehicle ownership and parking spaces and lower traffic congestion. The shift to electric vehicles, including buses and taxis, also seems inevitable, with cities worldwide investing in EV charging infrastructure to cater to future demand. Helping coordinate and unify more complex and fluid transport systems, Mobility-as-aService (MaaS), envisioned as a singular digital platform, would combine various modes of transport – buses, trams, bikes, and ride-shares – offering an optimized commuting solution. This could significantly help with first- and last-mile solutions.

The lesson is that any transport policy must consider residents’ culture and specific needs for it to work.

Looking further ahead, technologies like Hyperloop and magnetic levitation (Maglev) trains promise speeds surpassing traditional rail or even flights for inter-city transport. While it might sound like science fiction, drones for delivery and passenger urban air mobility could become a part of the urban transit ecosystem.

There is also a broader context of making cities liveable and functional. Studies have shown that providing public transport services in bad neighbourhoods leads to lower crime rates and economic growth due to residents’ access to better education and job opportunities. Conversely, when the Interstate Highway System was built across the US in the 1950s, the freeways were typically routed through poorer neighbourhoods, where real estate was cheaper, killing many once lively areas.

So we must study these examples and consider what portion of society our policies benefit. When we only invest in cars, are we doing this to the detriment of people who can only afford public transport services? And when we push people to more expensive electric cars, where does that leave people who cannot afford to upgrade? Some of these questions have challenging answers. Technology and data can empower decision-making, allowing cities to tailor efficient, sustainable, and, most importantly, people-centric solutions. By learning from global examples and embracing futuristic technologies, urban centres can pave the way for a revolution in transportation, ensuring a harmonious – and fairer – coexistence of people, technology, and the environment.

Societal values vs efficiencies IIt’s important to note that no one strategy fits every city. Older cities that were not built for cars can sometimes adopt strategies to discourage vehicles more efficiently than cities built around modern roads. Cycling in Amsterdam makes more sense than it does in Abu Dhabi, for example, due to the layout of the city centre, cultural expectations, and climate. Some Asian cities, including Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong, successfully rely on public transportation but can do so quickly because they have very high population densities. There is also public tolerance, or otherwise, to specific measures. Singapore has developed much pricing to discourage car ownership, which might not be so popular in London, where sections of the public and media have perceived initiatives such as 20mph zones as ‘anti-freedom’. Even pedestrian zones, which have been proven to benefit neighbourhoods, can face strong resistance from car-reliant residents.

AISA was inspired by the need for a comprehensive safety management tool that goes beyond traditional approaches. It is an AI safety assistant that addresses the challenge of effective communication and decision-making in the maritime sector by leveraging AI to provide instant support in any language. AISA aims to enhance safety, streamline operations, and bridge communication gaps within diverse naval crews. Can you walk us through how AISA works and how it integrates artificial intelligence to enhance safety in maritime logistics? AISA integrates seamlessly into existing systems, utilising Chat GPT-4 to comprehend and respond to crew queries. It breaks down language barriers, providing quick and accurate information 24/7. By consolidating data and offering real-time insights, AISA significantly enhances safety protocols, decisionmaking processes, and overall operational efficiency.

IoT-enabled sensors will enhance safety measures by predicting and preventing potential risks, while automation will optimise operational efficiency and reduce human errors. Environmental responsibility: We increasingly focus on ecological sustainability and decarbonise our operations. THE GOLF AFFAIR

The key initiative of DP World’s mission to make golf accessible to a broader audience is what they call their ‘Second Life Container’, which launched in 2022. This specially created 20-foot shipping container has been on a journey around the world with the DP World Tour, covering thousands of kilometres across land and sea, to collect golf balls from some of the most significant events in the sport. DP World is then giving these balls a second life. At the DP World Tour Championship this year, a milestone was reached with the 250,000th golf ball donated. Each of the balls will be donated to grassroots golf groups worldwide - to inspire more people to get out and play regardless of their background, location or skill level.

With its partnership with the International Cricket Council (ICC), DP World is focused on making cricket more accessible. As part of this, ahead of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, DP World committed to donating 50 repurposed shipping containers kitted out with cricket equipment to grassroots clubs worldwide. The eEconic is based on the eActros platform and has a range of up to 200 kilometres on a single charge. Our electric trucks are characterized by high performance and zero local emissions.
