The Might of the Mind

I've always firmly trusted our limitless abilities as humans to achieve anything we truly set our minds to. The mystery behind unlocking that power lies in the thought itself. Without that idea spark, we are confined by external factors—our environment, circumstances, and luck. However, when we actively pursue what we believe is possible, we transcend those limitations. Even if we don’t

fully reach our vision, we get closer to that goal, proving that an idea's power can propel us beyond our perceived boundaries.

Now is the ideal moment to harness the vast resources at our disposal. We are more fortunate than ever, with access to tools that can empower, guide, and serve us. The world is more connected and evolving faster

than ever before, presenting endless opportunities for growth and success.

In this issue, we highlight the inspiring stories of women working in the logistics industry, as we take a moment to reflect on Emirati Women’s Day, celebrated on August 28th. The voices in these stories offer not only inspiration but also a deeper understanding of the world around us, sparking greater growth and ambition.

This chapter is all about pursuing our goals and realising our dreams. Everything we seek in life is within our reach—through our actions, our mindset, and most importantly,

MARSH LAUNCHES USD 50 MILLION PORT BLOCKAGE INSURANCE FACILITY

Marsh, the world’s leading insurance broker and risk advisor and a business of Marsh McLennan, announced in August the launch of a first of its kind USD 50 million port blockage insurance facility, covering shipping ports and terminals around the world.

Created by Marsh following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and subsequent disruption at the Port of Baltimore, the insurance facility can be purchased independently or used to supplement existing cover. Available to Marsh clients globally, it is specifically designed to provide clients with cover for loss of revenue caused by third-party accidents such as a vessel sinking in a channel, a vessel impact resulting in a waterway closure, or a natural catastrophe.

The facility is backed by a panel of Lloyd’s of London and London market A+ rated insurers, and offers capacity of USD 50 million, with higher limits being available on a case-by-case basis.

Port blockage is a growing concern for businesses operating in the maritime industry and can result in significant disruptions to global supply chains and loss of revenue. The facility’s wording can be customised to meet the specific needs of individual clients, meaning that

coverage can be aligned to specific risk exposures and operational requirements.

Commenting on the launch, Louise Nevill, CEO, UK Marine, Marsh Specialty, said: “Port blockages around the world are increasing with frequency and severity, and are resulting in debilitating consequences for businesses involved in international trade. As global trade continues to expand, this new facility offers clients a rapidly available layer of insurance cover to protect operations and recovery in the event of port and terminal disruptions.”

ON THE CUSP NEW ERA OF A

How will the redeveloped Port of NEOM transform the regional trade landscape?

NEOM is an integral part of Vision 2030 and more broadly, the Kingdom’s rapidly growing and diversifying economy. Set to become a benchmark for the maritime industry, Port of NEOM will be a new global port serving the region and beyond.

Strategically located in Oxagon, on the Red Sea Coast, Port of NEOM is the primary seaport of entry into

Northwest KSA. Additionally, we are located at the crossroads of global trading routes, positioning NEOM as a key player in the global supply chain; for example, over 12% of trade passes through the adjacent Suez Canal every year.

Previously known as Duba Port, the port operations were transferred to NEOM in 2022. Duba has been an important trading link in this region for centuries. This stretch of the Red Sea coastline, close to the Gulf of Aqaba, was an outpost for international sea trade between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Port of NEOM is Oxagon’s first operational asset and supports the overall build of NEOM – from the import of goods and materials during the development phase and as a new global port serving the region. This is particularly important as development accelerates and

businesses across NEOM come on-stream. The port is currently undergoing an extensive development program to transform it into one of the world’s most advanced, efficient, and sustainable ports.

Development

The investment to date is over SAR 14 billion and we will continue to accommodate capacity expansion in line with demand. When complete, Port of NEOM will

Originally written by Sean Kelly, Managing Director, Port of NEOM. Edited by Aya Zhang.

be able to handle the world’s largest container ships. As part of the first stage, the construction of 3.5 km of quay wall is underway, as is the deepening 18.5 m-deep marine basin and widening the channel to 550 m

As part of NEOM, we have a clear mandate on sustainability. When completed, the port will operate at net zero-carbon emissions powered by 100% renewable energy, including self-generated solar. All of the material excavated from the basin dredging will be reused in regional construction.

Container Terminals 1 and 2

The ambitious plans include a new container terminal and an expansion of the general cargo terminal. The first terminal, coming online in 2025, will have an initial throughput capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot-equivalent (TEU) containers per annum, with the ability to expand further. The second container terminal will have a designed capacity of up to 10 million TEUs, based on market demand.

General Cargo

Our General Cargo services are increasing as NEOM construction expands. Our general and project cargo area is currently 200,000 sq m and we are adding another 90,000 sq m by the end of the year. In parallel, we are expanding our general and project cargo tonnage capacity to welcome up to 30 million tonnes in future.

ROPAX

We expect to handle 4.5 million tonnes of ROPAX in 2024 and 200,000 passengers. We provide daily ferry services to Safaga, upholding the ageold trade route across the Red Sea to Egypt.

The port also has significant future reserve design capacity for container handling, general cargo and bulk shipping.

Serving NEOM, the region and beyond

One of Oxagon’s key partners is NEOM

Green Hydrogen Company, which is building the world’s largest green hydrogen plant, capable of producing 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen a day, once operational in 2026. We are handling regular shipments of construction material, including wind turbines.

Modular housing units are being shipped through the port to meet the growing accommodation demands of NEOM. A major carrier, G2Ocean, has been delivering modules twice a month from Malaysia for the past 12 months.

A leading steel water pipe manufacturing company from India is shipping 12,000 pipes to NEOM through the port. Each 18-meter-long pipe is being used to support NEOM’s new utility infrastructure. We use a specialized pipe vacuum lifter to move 550 pipes per shipment, allowing for faster, safer and less labor-intensive operations.

The rising demand for cargo as NEOM comes online has seen an increasing number of ships calling at the port, including two of the world’s largest shipping lines – MSC and CMA-CGM. We have also announced a common feeder service by Folk Maritime, a new Saudi owned carrier. These services offer direct connectivity between NEOM and international trade routes via Jeddah.

We’re supporting our partners not just with their complex cargo needs, but on their sustainability ambitions too. One of the benefits of adding new port capacity to this region is the ability to bring goods closer to their end-use,

reducing road miles, freight costs, and CO2 emissions. In fact, our calculations show that shipping goods to Port of NEOM rather than taking them via road, from Jeddah, saves one tonne of CO2 per container.

Maritime Progress

This area of Saudi Arabia has a long and proud maritime history. We are building on this history, through our development program and our work with partners in NEOM and the Tabuk region.

As we develop, Port of NEOM’s impact on the regional and global trade landscape will continue to grow. Enhancing connectivity to international markets will further boost the region’s competitiveness and contribute to economic growth. With its strategic location on the Red Sea and at the crossroads of international trading routes, the port opens up new opportunities and positions NEOM as a key player in the global supply chain.

On the cusp of a new era for maritime progress, Port of NEOM will act not only as an economic enabler, but will employ the latest sustainable technologies positioning NEOM, and this region, as a leading hub for shipping and logistics.

Success in this environment requires not only technological innovations but also strong local partnerships, understanding of regulatory frameworks, and the ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.

The Middle East market represents growth and potential for Alstom, driven by ambitious national projects and a strong push towards sustainable urban mobility. We are committed to be part of this transformation, contributing to the future of transportation in the region. You recently opened your new regional headquarters in Riyadh. What prompted this move, and what impact do you expect it to have?

The opening of Alstom’s new Regional HQ in Riyadh is a significant milestone for us and reflects our commitment to the Middle East. This move places Alstom at the heart of one of the most vibrant and ambitious markets in the region, particularly with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 driving infrastructure development.

Establishing a Regional HQ in Riyadh enhances our ability to respond swiftly to market needs, forge closer relationships with key stakeholders, and deepen our understanding of the local market dynamics. It also allows us to provide more tailored solutions and services to our clients in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, ensuring that we are aligned with their long-term goals.

The new HQ serves as a strategic investment in our future in the region, positioning us to be a key player in the Middle East’s ongoing transformation in transportation and infrastructure.

What differentiates Alstom from other competitors in the field?

Alstom’s focus on technology and innovation is at the core of what sets it apart from its competitors in the industry. Our comprehensive portfolio, ranging from high-speed trains and metros to trams, people movers,

Mohamed

signalling, and power supply systems, allows us to provide fully integrated solutions, meeting the diverse needs of our customers in a way few others can.

Furthermore, Alstom is a leader in sustainable mobility. Last March, we were honoured to be named to Fast Company’s annual list of the Most Innovative Companies of 2024 for the introduction of the Coradia iLint, the world’s first hydrogen-powered train.

We were the first company to develop, test, and put a hydrogen-powered train into commercial service in Europe. The train was then sent to Canada and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for demonstrations, showcasing its capabilities and benefits, such as quieter operations and zero carbon emissions, in real-world conditions.

Alstom is a pioneer in alternative green traction solutions, and it offers a variety of options, including dieselbattery hybrid, battery-powered, and hydrogen-powered trains. Our commitment to sustainability extends across our product range, helping cities and countries reduce their carbon footprints and meet their environmental goals.

Additionally, Alstom is at the forefront of integrating digital technologies

into transportation. Our advanced signalling and control systems, such as ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) and CBTC (Communications Based Train Control), enhance safety, efficiency, and capacity on rail networks. Our digital solutions, moreover, like predictive maintenance and smart infrastructure management, improve operational reliability and reduce costs.

At Alstom, there is a prioritisation for customer-centric innovation, working closely with clients to codevelop solutions that are tailored to their specific needs. Whether it’s customising train designs to

reflect local cultures or developing mobility-as-a-service platforms, our

collaborative approach ensures that our innovations are relevant and add real value. While the company operates globally, we maintain a strong local presence in the markets we serve. This combination of global expertise and local understanding allows us to offer solutions that are both cutting-edge and highly relevant to regional challenges. Our new HQ in Riyadh, for example, exemplifies our commitment to bringing our global

expertise closer to our clients in the Middle East.

In essence, Alstom differentiates itself through a blend of technological leadership, sustainable practices, and a deep commitment to partnering with its customers to create the future of mobility. Its focus on innovation is not just about advancing technology; it is about shaping a better, more connected world.

What is the company’s vision for the next 10 years?

One critical element in the transformation of the railway industry is digitalisation. As there is a continuing strive to increase safety, efficiency, frequency of travel, reduce travel times, and expand capacities, heavy investments in innovations in digital solutions and automation are required. This will help deliver agile controls on all levels for greater passenger comfort, energy savings, overall cost reduction, and systemwide safety and security.

We are not just building trains and rail networks; we are building connections, enabling progress, and contributing to a more sustainable future. Our journey is about more than just transportation – it’s about moving forward together, creating value for society, and leaving a positive legacy for generations to come. As we move forward, we remain focused on our core values of excellence, innovation, and responsibility, confident that they will guide us in realising our vision and achieving longterm success.

However, Alstom’s broader vision is to continue leading the transportation industry with a focus on sustainability, digital innovation, global and local growth, and customer-centric solutions. We aim to shape the future of mobility in a way that benefits society, the environment, and the economy, driving progress for the next generation.

The company is now at a pivotal moment in its journey, driven by a strong sense of purpose and a clear vision for the future. As it looks ahead, Alstom is eager about the possibilities that lie in the front, particularly in regions like the Middle East, where rapid growth and ambitious projects are creating opportunities.

The Empowering Stories of Emirati Women

The role of women in society is undeniably pivotal, as they are the very source of life and vitality. Women have made tremendous strides in achieving their ambitions and goals, and today’s world is a fair witness to their enduring contributions across all times and ages. Their collaborative efforts have shaped and enriched our collective progress.

Emirati Women’s Day, celebrated on August 28th, is a day dedicated to honouring the exceptional achievements and contributions of

women across the UAE. Established in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, the “Mother of the Nation,” this day reflects her belief in the significant role women play in all areas of life.

Last month, we celebrated the ninth Emirati Women’s Day under the theme ‘We Share for Tomorrow,’ building on last year’s theme, ‘We Collaborate for Tomorrow.’ This year’s theme emphasises the power of sharing to create a brighter and more promising future.

Emirati Women’s Day not only celebrates women’s progress but also reaffirms the UAE’s commitment to

ensuring equal rights and empowering women to achieve their goals.

The following stories shed light on the journeys of women in various sectors of the logistics industry, amplifying their voices and sharing their experiences for others. Every story matters and every journey deserves its praise and recognition.

By sharing their progress, we understand, learn, and grow, and I hope that these stories will lead to more inspiration for growth. As Laila Essa, Senior Director of Financial Accounts at 7X, beautifully puts it: “Empowered women, empower other women.”

Kawthar Ahmed Alhashmi

Junior Project Planner, Production Control Department, Drydocks World

Kawthar holds a degree in electrical engineering from HCT, which laid the foundation for her career. Her journey began with training at Etihad Water and Electricity, where she gained valuable experience. Currently, she serves as a Junior Project Planner in the Production Control Department at Drydocks World. Her role involves preparing and releasing daily repair records, managing dock schedules, and generating KPI and management reports on a weekly basis.

Kawthar comments on working in the logistics industry: “Navigating a predominantly maledominated field presents a significant challenge. To address this, I actively sought mentorship and built a strong professional network. Persistence and skill development have been key to adapting and thriving in this environment.”

As a junior professional, she is observing several exciting developments in the maritime sector. These include advancements in shipbuilding and the adoption of new materials that enhance efficiency and sustainability. Kawthar is proud of being selected as a supervisor within a volunteer society, an opportunity that arose unexpectedly among a group of 300 volunteers. This recognition highlighted her supervisory skills and sense of responsibility, marking a significant milestone in her career.

“My greatest source of inspiration is my mother. Despite the long daily commute and sometimes tiring days, I am

constantly motivated by her ability to juggle multiple roles—wife, mother, student, and instructor. Her example has profoundly influenced how I approach my own responsibilities,” she shares.

Regarding Drydocks World, the company is aimed at supporting and empowering women. An example includes the women’s leadership training that Kawthar joined, an initiative designed to provide women with the resources they need to excel.

Looking ahead, she aims to assume greater leadership responsibilities, lead new projects, and pursue a master’s degree to further advance her career.

Fatma Suhail Alawar

Junior Project Engineer, Drydocks World

Fatma currently serves as a Junior Project Engineer in the EPC division, as part of the RUWAD program at Drydocks World. She is being intensively trained in all the departments within EPC, as well as supporting the Engineering team for various major projects, contributing to the overall success within our division.

One of my proudest achievements, despite being new to Drydocks World, was delivering a technical presentation on my learning outcomes within the EPC Engineering department. This presentation, which involved detailed concepts, was praised by my manager for its quality, comparable to those delivered by seasoned professionals. This recognition highlights the effective application of my education and the supportive environment at Drydocks World.

The maritime industry is experiencing a significant shift towards digitalization, with a focus on integrating technologies to convert physical assets into virtual assets. This transformation offers numerous benefits, such as improved convenience, accessibility, and sustainability, which are reshaping industry practices and enhancing operational efficiency.

When you finish work, give your personal life your full attention. Don’t think about your work tasks or the presentation due next week. There will be time for that the next morning! Creating that balance is crucial for both your professional and personal life. I truly believe that a drained person never succeeds.

Yes, Drydocks World has several initiatives designed to support women in here at the workplace. The “MentorHer” program provides mentorship opportunities for women in engineering and other technical roles. Additionally, events such as the recent female bowling tournament organized by DP World offer networking and community-building opportunities for women in the industry.

In the maritime industry, there are usually people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. While it can be a positive thing, don’t let that make you forget your own values! Respect your values enough to make everyone around you respect them as well.

Emirati women in the maritime industry bring a unique blend of passion, creativity, and STEM expertise. Their contributions, whether through innovative engineering solutions or steadfast dedication, play a crucial role in advancing the sector and supporting the broader objectives of the UAE.

I am currently learning how all different disciplines are interlinked for the success of projects in the maritime industry. My next goals include digging deeper into engineering management and project management, and to be part of major projects that contribute to the success of Drydocks World and UAE.

Senior Director of Financial Accounts, 7X

Laila Essa’s journey in logistics began in an entry-level position as an accountant. Over the years, her curiosity and passion for the industry and commitment to continuous improvement allowed her to advance into leadership roles despite presented difficulties.

“The logistics industry has traditionally been male dominated, which brings its own set of challenges for women, particularly in leadership roles. The gender gap and lingering stereotypes often cast doubt on women’s abilities and skills,” Laila comments.

To overcome these obstacles, Laila focused on her strengths, and was committed to continuous learning, relying on the support of mentors and colleagues who believed in her potential. She has always seen challenges as opportunities for growth. She believes that by embracing these moments, individuals can break down barriers and prove their capabilities.

The greatest source of inspiration for Laila has been the visionary leadership of the UAE, with its progressive policies and commitment to empowering women. It allows her to contribute to the broader goal of gender equality in logistics, which is something she is passionate about.

The logistics industry is currently undergoing significant changes, with diversity and inclusion emerging as key

priorities. Companies are actively promoting women and underrepresented groups into leadership roles, fostering a more balanced and innovative workforce. There is also a strong shift towards workplace flexibility, with remote work and flexible hours becoming more common, enabling better work-life balance.

Technological advancements, especially in AI, automation, and digital platforms, are reshaping the industry, creating exciting opportunities for women in tech-driven roles. Environmental sustainability is another major trend, with women often leading initiatives that drive this important shift. These trends are collectively paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future in the sector.

Regarding 7X’s efforts to empower women, Laila explains: “At 7X, we are committed to empowering women through various initiatives. Throughout her years at 7X, Laila has witnessed how women in leadership roles have been instrumental in optimising operations and achieving strategic goals. She believes and always says: “empowered women, empower other women.”

Her advice to young Emirati women who are thinking about pursuing a career in logistics is to be bold and take the initiative and assert their presence in this field. The logistics sector offers a wealth of opportunities, especially with the advancements in technology, whether in supply chain management, digital facilitation, or finance, the sector needs professionals with diverse skills.

“If you are passionate and committed, there is no limit to what you can achieve. Work hard, stay enthusiastic, and remember that nothing is impossible. Your dedication and effort will open doors and pave the way for your success,” She says.

Her next primary goal is to continue driving innovation and excellence across the diverse areas within the logistics industry from supply chain management, finance, and operations to technological advancements and beyond. In addition to her own professional growth, she committed to inspiring the next generation of women, showing them that they can lead and excel in any aspect of this dynamic field.

“As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the power of resilience and the importance of breaking barriers. A key element of success in the logistics industry, and indeed in any field, is not just personal success but also helping others succeed.

Every morning, we have a choice: to limit our growth or to strive to become a better version of ourselves. As women, we shouldn’t wait for opportunities to come to us—we should take the initiative to create them,” Laila concludes.
