While I prepared to chair a panel at the Sustainability Innovation Forum, meeting industry executives and getting to know the market in a more casual and intimate setting was rather refreshing.
I was thrilled that the event attracted some of the logistics industry's most influential players.
But if you were to ask me, what was it that I brought home that day? It was networking at its core. You never know where a connection might lead you because of the simple ties that you make. Perhaps someone wants something from me, or perhaps I would need something from them in the future. But I genuinely think that building a connection should never be done for gain. But do people actually act in that way? If you ask me, I don't know. Do they need to do that? Of course not, yet they continue to. Building relationships has always been a complicated process for me. However, adhering to my ideals, here we are, gearing up to host our first networking event for the logistics and supply chain industry.

I will evaluate these incidents before I go on to the balance sheet. Correspondingly, my assets will be those I genuinely care about, adore, and have made explicit or implicit choices for. My decisions—about which I might not yet be certain—will be held accountable as liabilities. So, as per usual, I also reviewed my balance sheet this year. And to be completely forthcoming, as I have navigated through the darker nights and warmer days of life, the last year has been a rollercoaster for me. Even though I have lost connection with some of my closest friends, I have also developed a wealth of knowledge and experience, become closer to some family ties, forged lasting friendships, and made priceless experiences that I will sit back and reflect on in the future. For my birthday this year, I had dinner with my friends, and we relived my previous year, during which they did offer their outlook.
On September 22, 2023, we will be hosting LNME Connect, a gathering for those working in the sector to interact, network, and meet one another. The following night, we will witness the Logistics & Transport Awards 2023. Officially, let the events season kick-off!
And collectively with that, I analysed my balance sheet for 2022. It is a beautiful feeling to realise how my perspectives have changed, and not exactly it being clubbed with growing age becomes more tangible every year.

DHL Global Forwarding, the leading logistics provider worldwide, announces a successful partnership with the UAE’s leading commercial vehicle and machinery company, FAMCO, to introduce the Volvo Electric FM Truck in the Middle East as a testament to their commitment to sustainable logistics solutions. This marks DHL’s deployment of the first Volvo truck in its UAE fleet after having already deployed over 50 Volvo trucks in its European fleet.

DHL wants to reduce all logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050. It is doing this by committing to a set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement, investing EUR 7 billion to reach it. This investment will be used to increase its use of sustainable aviation fuels, design
all new buildings to be carbon neutral, offer a comprehensive portfolio of green products and electrify 60% of its lastmile delivery by 2030.
DHL already has over 30,000 e-vehicles for pickup and delivery in operation. The logistics leader also plans to increase the use of sustainable fuels in air, ocean and road transportation to more than 30% by 2030. Furthermore, DHL will offer sustainable alternatives for 100% of all core products and solutions.

The Volvo Electric FM Truck, a product of FAMCO’s role as the exclusive distributor of Volvo trucks, buses, and construction equipment in the UAE, boasts impressive capabilities. With a Gross Combination Weight of up to 44 tons and a remarkable range of 300 kilometres, its driveline performance of up to 490 kW / 666 hp ensures efficiency and reliability. Notably, the truck’s rapid charging time of 2.5 hours (DC) and 9.5 hours (AC) minimizes downtime, making it a valuable asset in logistics.

Dubai Holding Asset Management is rolling out EV charging stations (EVCSs) across its residential portfolio in collaboration with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), starting with dedicated charging stations across the Ghoroob community in Mirdif. The move responds to rapidly rising demand for EVs from UAE residents and supports the country’s environmental initiatives as it observes 2023 as the ‘Year of Sustainability’.

“As such, we lower our electricity consumption by using solar energy and reduce water wastage by 40 per cent through the treatment of polluted water and the collection and reuse of rainwater, all in addition to the usage of rooftop photovoltaic solar panels to generate clean energy,” added Mitch.
Their methods include using recycled materials and environmentally friendly building materials and implementing international environmental standards for constructing light industrial buildings and units. They are eager to make it easier for electric vehicle adoption in the free zone. Mitch said, “By providing reliable and efficient EV charging infrastructure, we empower businesses and individuals to embrace greener mobility options, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and a cleaner environment.”
They are committed to continuously developing their infrastructure and facilities to ensure that clients and partners enjoy state-of-the-art technology and the most significant advantage on the market. “This year, we decided to redesign our planned warehouse infrastructure to ensure it aligns with the requirements of a B2C-friendly environment. The already booming digital commerce industry grew even faster due to the COVID-19 pandemic. E-commerce in MENA increased by 52 per cent in a single year, reaching a gross merchandise value (GMV) of $22 billion in 2020. The prelockdown estimates for the online retail market in the UAE and Saudi Arabia combined was $7.5 billion. It increased to $11 billion by the end of March 2020. The Middle East’s e-commerce market is experiencing significant growth and enormous potential. It is projected to grow to a market size of $50 billion by 2025.

Decarbonisation is a vital imperative for all the industries of the world, key as it is to meet the obligations to limit global warming. Firstly, to meet the targets set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement, and then to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, which are necessary to limit global warming to 1.5oC and avoid the worst effects of climate change. Marine services are the same as they represent a significant source of carbon emissions, accounting for 3% of the total global carbon emissions, so those of us who work in this sector need to act if we meet these ambitious but necessary carbon targets.
We are committed to tackling this to keep trade flowing and protect our natural world. DP World aims to reduce carbon emissions by at least 28% by 2030, become carbon neutral by 2040 and reach net zero by 2050. DP World’s sustainability strategy drives the commitment to achieving this, ‘Our World,
Our Future,’ which guides all business decisions to ensure the company’s evolution benefits trade and the world’s communities and natural environments.
We plan to reach our sustainability objectives through various approaches and initiatives. Firstly, we plan to reduce the number of vessels on the water by improving our routing and scheduling systems. Artificially intelligent software is already being used to synchronise our services better and identify areas for fewer, more efficient operations.
The broader DP World business is undergoing a global drive to electrify all our ports and terminals, and, where possible, we will be upgrading marine service equipment and vehicles as we transition to electricity. This will help in reducing our diesel and marine fuel consumption.
We plan to procure the electricity for this plan from renewable energy or carbon-neutral sources. As well as our own wind turbines and solar panels, we will invest in local renewable energy sources and guarantees of origin. Where electrification isn’t possible, we plan to procure low or zero-carbon fuel to replace diesel and marine energy. We foresee ammonia as a dominant fuel due to its carbon-free nature. However, using ammonia as a fuel requires rigorous safety measures on vessels and during bunkering.
What measures does DP World Marine Services take to prevent pollution and ensure the preservation of marine ecosystems?
As we embark on the journey to find viable, greener fuels for industry, we are taking measures to reduce our impact on the natural world, mainly marine ecosystems.
Our Actual Emission Tracker, a tool that helps us calculate greenhouse gas emissions at the specific Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) level, monitors our impact and helps us reduce services where possible.
Unifeeder has recently published its decarbonisation strategy, in which they have outlined ambitious short-term goals. These include enhancing their current fleet’s fuel efficiency, expanding biofuels’ utilisation, and gradually introducing new fuel-efficient vessels. The overarching goal is to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 25% before 2030.
However, at DP World, we recognise that it’s just as essential to actively protect natural ecosystems as it is to reduce our carbon footprint.
Further, as a business, we proudly sponsor the Earthshot Prize. This sustainability initiative invests in groundbreaking environmental solutions such as artificial coral reefs to maintain habitats for aquatic species and act as natural flood defences for coastal communities.
Does DP World Marine Services promote and support sustainable practices among its clients and partners? If so, how?
DP World won’t achieve these ambitious changes alone; instead, it will require collaboration across the sector to deliver real change across the industry. As a logistics provider, we recognise our environmental standards’ impact
on our partners and customers. To address this, we work collaboratively with them to reduce our impact and help them implement greener solutions.
For example, our new direct freight service between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iraq utilises the Arabian Gulf to bypass the lengthy road journey that trucks and trailers use between the two countries. Besides the great time and efficiency benefits, this service offers significant sustainability advantages: By shipping the trailer alone to Iraq, we remove thousands of trucks from the roads yearly, helping us and our clients reduce CO2 emissions.
As well as incentivising customers to use greener fuels, solutions such as these are valuable as they can work with existing infrastructure to provide accessible green practices for all areas of the world, ensuring a just transition towards net zero.
DP World was also one of the first companies in the UAE to calculate and obtain external assurance of scope three emissions. Our range three emissions reduction strategy heavily focuses on engaging with our suppliers, including exploring insetting opportunities.
Can you provide examples of any projects or collaborations DP World Marine Services has undertaken to promote sustainability in the maritime industry?
We aim to promote and accelerate sustainable operations throughout the maritime industry. We recently signed a contract with China’s shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International to construct a new generation of high-level, fuel-efficient ships that reduce exhaust emissions.
In Europe, P&O Ferries’ new hybrid ship, P&O Pioneer, recently made its maiden voyages, sailing tourist passengers and vital trade business across the channel between Dover and Calais. P&O Pioneer has been designed to reduce carbon emissions on the UK’s most crucial trade route, which carries over £144bn of goods by ferry alone. The ship is propelled by a combination of traditional fuel and battery power and has been designed with the capacity to become carbon neutral in future.
The ship is the world’s largest double-ended hybrid ferry, with two bridges, meaning it does not need to turn in port, saving fuel on every trip. This hybrid ferry offers cleaner, greener cross-channel travel, bringing a 40% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the ship it replaced.
How does DP World Marine Services incorporate renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, into its operations?
Across DP World’s global network, we are installing on-site renewable energy systems, including solar panels and wind turbines, to generate a significant portion of our electricity. Where we haven’t yet built our solutions or need more energy than we can supply by ourselves, we purchase renewable energy through certificates of green energy from local grids.
We are also invested in implementing renewable energy sources for our communities. Earlier this year,
the DP World team in EUROFOS built and delivered the first of three floating windmill turbines, making up the Mediterranean’s first renewable offshore wind farm. Once completed, this farm will provide enough electricity for 45,000 people annually.
Has DP World Marine Services implemented innovative technologies or solutions to reduce its carbon footprint or improve energy efficiency?
DP World’s commitment to sustainability is equally applied on land as it is at sea, driving us to implement energy-efficient practices and engage in sustainable resource management. We acknowledge that our actions are critical to our overall environmental impact and strive to create an eco-friendly footprint in all our activities.
We are phasing out diesel vessels and introducing fuel-efficient and green vessels. We have also implemented a digital monitoring system, which
uses real-time data to monitor and manage our energy consumption on and offshore. Our Actual Emissions Tracker improves our efficiency and that of our partners, providing realtime insight into how much carbon certain operations emit and giving data that helps us make greener alternative solutions.
Does DP World Marine Services engage in community outreach or education programs to raise awareness about marine conservation and sustainability?
Community and water are two critical pillars of DP World’s sustainability strategy, Our World, Our Future. As well as our business decisions, these pillars guide DP World’s volunteering efforts across our network, many of which are focused on marine conservation.
Our colleagues in Yarimca, Türkiye, have been working closely with schools as part of our Mind Your Waste initiative, teaching future generations how to reduce their waste and plastic use – a significant threat to marine environmental welfare. This was launched alongside the Zero Waste mobile phone game, a fun way of teaching families how to minimise waste and choose greener packaging. Also, in Türkiye, we are working with marine biologists to save the yellow coral bridge in the Sea of Marmara. This vast natural structure can naturally sequester carbon and provide a habitat for hundreds of aquatic species. However, rising sea temperatures are affecting the health of the coral, so we’re funding research to find ways of protecting the coral and reducing ocean temperatures.
In India, Asia and South America, DP World participates in regular mangrove planting initiatives to create natural flood prevention solutions as sea levels rise and boost natural carbon sequestering solutions.
As part of our commitment to reach net zero in 2050a, we also have our partnership with Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. The independent centre is undertaking intensive research and
development to find practical ways to decarbonise the maritime industry through several global initiatives. Our collaboration and contribution to this partnership involves providing expert insights about end-to-end supply chains and demonstrating and testing new solutions across the value chain in a live setting to accelerate greener trade transport.

Paying homage to distinguished Emirati women working in the industry in observance of Emirati Women’s Day

When someone asks me about womanhood, the first three words that come to my mind are strength, respect, and courage. The biological, social, and cultural characteristics of being a woman are collectively called womanhood. Correspondingly, there are many facets to womanhood. Remembering that the idea of femininity is nuanced and may be interpreted and experienced in various contexts is critical. Furthermore, arguments about gender identity and gender roles are developing, as are cultural perceptions of being a woman. As a result, there is an increasing appreciation for the variety of experiences and identities that fall under the umbrella of “womanhood.”
I embraced the concept of womanhood over the years and saw how strong my mother has been. And here we are, in UAE, celebrating Emirati Women’s Day. The UAE celebrates Emirati Women’s Day every year to commemorate and acknowledge the accomplishments and efforts of Emirati women to the growth and success of the country, which we observed this year on August 28th, 2023. Emirati Women’s Day may have a particular topic or focus each year that emphasises a specific element of women’s efforts or achievements. There may be seasonal variations in these topics. This year’s theme, ‘We Collaborate for Tomorrow,’ was selected to support the goals of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The UAE government has proven dedication to advancing women’s chances and rights. In addition to putting laws and measures in place to enhance women’s involvement in numerous areas, it has nominated women to key administrative positions.
In addition to honouring the accomplishments of Emirati women, Emirati Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the continuous efforts being made in the UAE to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. It demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to building a more egalitarian and inclusive society so that women may thrive and continue to advance the country. Living in a country where considerable attempts are made to advance women makes me extremely happy. Here, we have acknowledged some of the most significant Emirati women.
For Fatema, being a woman in the UAE is an exciting time. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Global Gender Gap report, the UAE ranks as the leading country in gender parity in the Arab World, which comes from the fundamental belief that women and men are equal partners in society. Over the past few years, the UAE has made remarkable progress in enhancing the opportunities available to women. “This transformation is undoubtedly a blessing that has touched the lives of countless women across the nation. From education to career prospects, women are breaking barriers and achieving milestones that were once considered out of reach,” shares Fatema Abdul Qaher Al Musawi, Manager of Authorisations at Etihad Cargo.
As the national carrier of the UAE, Etihad Cargo has embraced the UAE’s vision of achieving gender equality. Both women and men have the same opportunities for growth, career development and advancement. This diversity strengthens Etihad Cargo, the wider air cargo community, and the UAE, helping us get closer to a truly equal, diverse and inclusive society.

She is proud of women’s dedication, strength and achievements that have helped to shape UAE. She is also thrilled as this day is dedicated to gender equality and empowering women like her in the UAE.
According to her, Emirati women’s growth is infinite. With Emirati women participating actively in the private sector in various roles, it will enable them to participate in the country’s future and grow their contribution to the economy. “The initiative of our government to gender equality and female empowerment will help us succeed in our chosen field/career, and in return, this will contribute to the greater success of the UAE,” adds Fathima.
“My advice to a younger female generation is to stay focused on their studies but enjoy life simultaneously! As the next generation of women leaders, they should focus on the long game, celebrate all the wins, learn from every mistake or failure and never lose sight of uplifting others along the way.”
Since 2005, Haifa Abdulla Matar has worked with Drydocks World. She works as a Senior Manager at Drydocks World’s Production, Operations & Offshore Services division. She is versatile and persistent in learning skills that have helped her advance in her job and provide her kid the finest care possible thanks to both her employment and experience as a parent of three.
“Emirati Women’s Day is an important day for us all to recognise the efforts of women in this country. It is all about accomplishments and achievements of women in the UAE and honours their contributions while inspiring more of us to achieve our dreams,” shares Haifa Abdulla Matar – Senior Manager HRBP – Production, Operation and Offshore services, Drydocks World.
She claims that Emirati women, outside of the UAE, serve as an inspiration to all other countries. Emirati women have attained important positions all around the nation, showing the significance of their contribution to the UAE’s industries.
“We are making our nation proud and will continue to empower others. My advice would be to take the opportunity we have in this country to set out your plans and ambitions. UAE is a unique country where your ambitions can be fulfilled quickly with the right attitude and mindset. Be committed and give your best at every possible moment.”
Munira joined DP World in 2005 after majoring in business administration. Munira is a data analyst for the General Cargo Department, specialising in the petrochemical and aluminium industries. She is constantly inspired by being a member of the DP World family to strive for greatness.
“Emirati Women’s Day reminds me of the courage and creativity of our women, which inspires me in my work,” adds Munira Abdulla Al Blooshi, Supervisor – CRM, Operations Management at DP World.
“Among my proudest achievements at DP World is developing autogenerated reports and implementing new customer feedback processes. My enthusiasm has its roots in continuous learning. I’m passionate about expanding my expertise and skills within the organisation, which DP World values and supports by encouraging personal development.”
With an educational background in Engineering, she accepted the challenge when she opted to work in this field (25) years ago. “My curiosity about engineering had inspired my journey and paved the way towards achieving great heights and inspiring the younger generations of Emirati women,” Muneera says.
Nearly fifty years ago, the labour market was not the same as nowadays. Today, the picture is entirely different with existing equality for women as men and the scales are still tilting in her favour in numerous indicators. “The UAE has worked hard, inspired by Our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to be one of the global leaders in gender equality. Today, no one can doubt our active role in our country’s economic development.”
Now, she stands as an active contributor, a maker, and a vital contributor to the most significant achievements, represented in the most recent successes for the UAE, such as the launch of
the Hope Probe to Mars and the launch of Units 1 and 2 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the Arab world’s first peaceful nuclear reactors.
“I proudly call myself a ‘Woman Engineer’ with the slogan of ‘Made in UAE’ amid such tremendous challenges facing the region around how to ensure that women are empowered,” adds Muneera.
Muneera has worked on critical projects during her leadership role in the Trakhees Department, and she is still working her way up to the following levels. She stressed that Emirati women in the next years are determined to contribute to the UAE’s success with a significant proportion of engineering, science and technology students. “I’m confident that our role models in these industries will be a vital pillar to shape the career paths for the upcoming generations and to instil the dedication to pursuing excellence in their fields. Certainly, I can convey a message to future generations, particularly to females, saying, “Your time has arrived, and I urge you to pursue your dreams. Your remarkable presence is your strength, enabling you to excel in every aspect confidently and ensuring your empowerment. Seize it!”
Latifa Ibrahim Hassan has a strong foundation in IT and technology. In her current role, she pioneers Sustainability efforts within DP World’s Corporate Support department. Her journey began at a career fair at the Higher Colleges of Technology. The moment she connected with DP World; she sensed a perfect match for my aspirations. In her role, she leads programmes and initiatives that forge impactful community partnerships and drive sustainable change.

BMaitha graduated from Dubai’s Zayed University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management. She helps DP World’s Emiratization strategy, concentrating on programme management and recruiting. Her responsibilities span a wide range, from integrating fresh Emirati graduates to taking part in their numerous projects to further the Emiratization of the company. She mentors trainees as they go through their careers with DP World, works with schools and institutions to entice fresh talent, and supports their people-sourcing strategy.

In Abu Dhabi, Jouhayna AlMheiri works as an air traffic control officer. Her interest is in teaching the future generation of air traffic controllers. In addition to being an artist, Jouhayna is a public speaker. She has finished a BSc in Air Transport Management and is presently enrolled in an MSc in Artificial Intelligence programme. “My advice for the forthcoming generation of Emirati women is to take a moment to reflect on what you want in your life, and once you envision that, you then must embody it,” says Jouhayna AlMheiri, an Air Traffic Control Officer at Abu Dhabi Airport. “The opportunities are endless for those with vision, focus, and drive. Our time is now so seizing it. They say reach for the skies. I say reach for the stars.”
Sumaya Mahmood Tahlak ensures that Drydocks World has a cheerful and good culture across all its operations. “I think it is important for us to honour and celebrate all women of the UAE. We have made so much progress in this country. One of the most important aspects is ensuring that women play a key role in the country’s development. I and many other women at Drydocks World are a testament to that progress,” exclaims Sumaya Mahmood Tahlak, Assistant Manager – Happiness and Employee Engagement Department, Drydocks World. She thinks women in the UAE have enormous potential. The UAE has several projects and programmes in place for its citizens. Besides being one of the few female leaders with high managerial positions at the PCFC, Hend Ahmad takes this responsibility seriously as a woman of frontlines. She doesn’t take this easy, “I always create opportunities to chase my dreams,” Hend describes.
Since UAE is looking forward to entering the world’s top ten list in the United Nations Gender Equality Index, having ranked
18th in the world this year and first in the Arab and the Middle East according to the latest World Bank reports, Hend shares her hope to position Emirati Women who champion bravery and dispel challenges to pursue high-ranking positions and titles, “Both women and men can achieve the impossible when they practice resilience.”
Empowering women in the workforce can be accomplished when they find suitable, qualified, and professional mentors to whom they feel they can relate. Hend is grateful for the outstanding leadership that sets women up for success with countless opportunities.

Walking us through Dubai Industrial City’s portfolio of existing and new customers’ capacity to draw notable players in various industries and reaffirm its reputation as a thriving regional industrial destination for the entire manufacturing value chain. Saud shares, “Standard Carpets Industries has operated among the world’s largest carpet factories in our district since 2014, manufacturing high-quality products that reinforce the ‘Made in UAE’ brand in more than 68 export markets. The company is developing a 3 million sq. ft. facility that will be one of the world’s largest carpet factories and the region’s biggest at Dubai Industrial City when it opens.” Al Barakah Dates, which has specialised sorting, washing, and packaging facilities and cutting-edge production lines at Dubai Industrial City, is planning to enter the Indian market as part of the UAE-India CEPA agreement, announced in May 2022. Himalaya Wellness, which also operates its Global Research Centre at their sister district, Dubai Science Park, is setting up a manufacturing plant to produce a high volume of medicines to export to over 100 countries. The ‘Made in UAE’ brand mark is being strengthened by such representation on a global scale. Dubai Industrial City has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, bringing in AED 1 billion investments from domestic and international manufacturing companies by 2023.
“Furthermore, Dubai Industrial City is an active proponent of future-focused technologies and the Fourth Industrial
Revolution principles to reduce wastage and efficiently develop sustainable goods. In May 2023, we partnered with MoIAT to deploy the Industrial Technology Transformation Index in the manufacturing sector, marking an extension of our commitment to accelerating decarbonisation, digitisation, digital transformation, and Industry 4.0 in the UAE’s manufacturing sectors,” comments Saud.
Customers are increasingly accepting the benefits of automation and advanced manufacturing methods. For instance, Unilever runs MENA’s most extensive personal care liquids manufacturing facility at Dubai Industrial City. The system uses a modular design to create production lines that are 80 per cent faster, shorter, and more responsive.
Silver Line Gate Group is constructing a manufacturing, warehouse and corporate office facility in the area. The 1.37 million square foot facility will support markets throughout the GCC, Africa, and Southeast Asia by utilising revolutionary technologies and fully automated machinery and equipment.
Dubai Industrial City promotes decarbonization and sustainability and supports national and international initiatives to lower manufacturingrelated carbon emissions. This includes setting up solar panels to offer their clients renewable energy sources and cutting carbon emissions even further.
During the ‘Make Brilliance’ campaign launch in May 2023, Dubai Industrial City and MOCCAE signed a contract to advance industrial decarbonization. Saud confirms, “Both parties will collaborate on implementing environmental laws and decrees and promoting the UAE carbon registry and crediting mechanism to support decarbonisation efforts in the industrial and logistics sectors under the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategy.”
Lastly, Dubai Industrial City’s longterm goals and vision are focused on further solidifying its position as the region’s leading industrial and logistics hub and attracting new partners to sustain the growth of future industries and economic diversification. “Our world-class infrastructure and strategic government partnerships will continue to foster innovation and nurture an environment conducive to collaboration and knowledge sharing. We remain committed to growing our district’s pivotal role in driving Dubai’s and the UAE’s long-term economic growth and development,” concludes Saud.

As we all know, logistics organisations that want to lessen their environmental effect, run efficiently, and satisfy the rising demand for eco-friendly practices must consider sustainability in transportation. Here are some crucial elements and tactics that logistics organisations may use to adopt transportation sustainability:
Fleet Management:
Efficient Vehicles: Purchasing fuelefficient, low-emission automobiles is a wise investment. To cut pollution, think about switching to trucks powered by natural gas, electric, or hybrids.

1. How is the Middle Eastern landscape developing for e-mobility?
As the Middle East works to lessen its environmental impact, diversify its energy sources, and promote environmentally friendly transportation options, the region is seeing significant e-mobility (electric mobility) advancements.
“Businesses and governmental organisations are electrifying their fleets frequently. For instance, many delivery and taxi services in the area are switching to electric cars to cut expenses and emissions,” comments Shailen Shukla, Chief Logistics Officer at PicTruc.
Additionally, with strong government support, several Middle Eastern nations have started ambitious e-mobility initiatives. For instance:
> UAE: By 2030, the UAE wants 42,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to be on the road. Particularly in Dubai, parking and charging for electric cars are now free.
> Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia has
been working to build charging infrastructure nationwide to reach its goal of 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2030.
> Jordan: To encourage the use of electric vehicles, Jordan has reduced registration costs and implemented tax exemptions.
“While much has been accomplished, there are still many obstacles to overcome, such as additional infrastructure development, overcoming range anxiety, and ensuring that electric vehicles are accessible and affordable. But the Middle East is actively embracing e-mobility to lessen its reliance on fossil fuels, cut emissions, and develop a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system,” comments Shailen.
What are some of the challenges the EV Charging Infrastructure is facing?
“The UAE’s push for Electric Vehicle adoption hinges on successfully addressing challenges associated with charging infrastructure in many ways,” said Vinay Premachandran, Sales Director at Powertech Mobility and COO of Powertech Group of Companies. The different ways are:
> Infrastructure Development: A comprehensive charging network is required, especially between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
> Standardization: A unified approach across different EV brands is necessary to simplify charging for all users. Ensuring all the charging infrastructure caters to CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2) standards rather than a multistandard is advisable.
> Electricity Demand: Increased EV adoption means greater power demand. Grid enhancements and decentralized renewable energy installations such as containerized Energy Storage Solutions or ESS can help manage this surge.
> Energy Source: For EVs to be genuinely sustainable, they should primarily be powered by renewables. Continued solar and Hydro/ Wind energy expansion in the UAE is essential.
> Public Awareness: Educational campaigns can demystify EV usage and charging, aiding adoption.
> Climate: Given the harsh environment, EV infrastructure must be robust, and EV models should be optimized for the region’s conditions.
> Real Estate Constraints: Spacesaving solutions like vertical charging stations may be vital in dense urban areas.
> Integration with Smart Grids: Linking EV stations to smart grids aids in energy optimization.
How can various partnerships accelerate the adoption of transportation solutions?

The transportation industry is at an inflexion point, deeply influenced by a greater focus on sustainability and
efficiency. “At Yango, we are keenly aware of the role transportation plays in global carbon emissions—accounting for around 24% according to the International Energy Agency,” added Shashi Shekar Singh, Director of New Markets at Yango GCC. Consequently, they are utilizing AI and machine learning algorithms to optimize routes and reduce drivers’ dry runs, thus reducing their environmental footprint and saving costs. “We’re not just stopping at fuel optimization; our long-term plans include exploring the feasibility of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into our fleet,” said Shashi.

In line with UAE’s government initiatives, 2023 is the Year of Sustainability and its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. Coupled with mobility as a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms, consumers can seamlessly choose the most efficient route using a mix of transportation methods— e-scooter, a shared ride, or public transport—further reducing their carbon footprint.
Battery technology is another area where rapid advancements are occurring. Sodium-ion batteries, which are lower cost and have a lower energy density, and hydrogen fuel cells that produce no emissions and have equivalent range and performance to gasoline counterparts, offer disruptive alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Shashi contributed, “These new technologies could reduce the overall cost of EVs, making them accessible to a broader audience, as sales in this sector have more than tripled in three years.”
The logistics industry in the Middle East is swiftly embracing electric mobility to enhance its sustainability efforts. With the growing emphasis on reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact, one is witnessing increased investments by critical logistics players like the DHL Group in electric vehicles and sustainable transportation solutions to lower operational costs and meet stringent environmental regulations. This transition is driving innovation in electric vehicle technology and infrastructure, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future in logistics.
“As we march towards our goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050, DHL remains committed to serving our customers with smart digital solutions that improve sustainability and
efficiency. Our investment in the UAE’s first electric truck, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 300, as well as the Volvo Electric FM Truck, is an additional step in the direction of pioneering innovative solutions which help us achieve our ambitious sustainability goals and create unique solutions for our valued customers,” explains Tobias Maier, CEO of Saloodo! Middle East and Africa.
They are proud to put the vision into practice, and they are doing this by committing to a set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement, investing EUR 7 billion to reach it. This investment will be used to increase its use of sustainable aviation fuels, design all new buildings to be carbon neutral, offer a comprehensive portfolio of green products and electrify 60% of its last-mile delivery by 2030. DHL already has over 30,000 e-vehicles for pickup and delivery in operation and aims to provide sustainable alternatives for 100% of all core products and solutions. Sustainability Innovation Awards 2023 is one of the leading events applauding the achievements of the region’s sustainability initiatives and projects from all sectors in the Middle East.
