Baschmann Services Celebrates 25th Anniversary In 1986, Peter Baschmann started a new venture, Baschmann Services, Inc. Peter began his career as a self-employed technician working from his truck and shop in Varysburg, N.Y. He specialized in the repair of heavy equipment, undercarriage and tracked equipment. In time, Peter had grown the business from a one-man operation to employing two other technicians; eventually, he outgrew the original two-bay facility. Twenty-five years later, Peter’s ambitious nature and resilience have helped him in developing the business he leads today. Baschmann Services is located in Elma, N.Y., and is proud to be a leader in the heavy construction industry. The company continues to offer customers parts and service for their construction and aggregate equipment needs. Baschmann’s diversity has allowed the company to continue to grow over the years and to grow its customer base. The staff shares Peter’s drive to get the job done and to put the customer first. Locating the Parts You Need Baschmann Services’ parts department is devoted to finding the right part. The company offers OEM parts for all the product lines it sells and services and it specializes in having a vast assortment of aftermarket parts. Parts Manager Bert Wilkie prides himself on his ability to locate parts for older machines that may be continued on page 4

obsolete and that no one else can seem to find. “I like to tell people that if I can’t find it, you don’t need it,” Wilkie said. “We have recently become a dealer for Baldwin filters, which gives us an alternative filter brand with competitive pricing,” Wilkie said. “Some of our customers are going through a difficult time and keeping their costs down is a major objective. With that in mind, we offer a large variety of aftermarket parts. We have a tremendous source for aftermarket undercarriages and specialize in locating parts that are no longer available from manufacturers such as Fiat-Allis, Trojan, Clark, Dynahoe, Massey Ferguson and Barber Greene. We also can offer our customers a substantial savings on rebuilt starters and alternators. “We are also a dealer for Perkins engines and Perkins engine parts. You will be surprised at how many manufacturers of equipment worldwide use the Perkins engines. Regardless of the brand of equipment that you are using, Parts Manager Bert Wilkie enjoys the challenge of if it is powered by a Perkins engine we can be your engine locating a part that no one else can find. parts and warranty source.” The parts department of Baschmann Services is well stocked and currently has an inventory of approximately a half-amillion dollars. The parts department carries items such as load chains, binders, utility lights, fluids, lubricants, solvents and adhesives at reasonable prices. Keeping You Up and Running Baschmann’s service department specializes in the repair and service of heavy construction equipment. With more than 100 years of combined experience, the technicians are capable of working on all makes and models, regardless of the year. A fleet of fully equipped vehicles offer 24-hour emergency service to meet customers’ needs, or work can be performed in one of the many high bays at Baschmann’s facility in Elma. A portable line boring machine is available to re-bore openings for perfect alignment; this can be done in-house or at the customer’s site. Crane inspections are available and completed by Baschmann’s licensed mobile crane inspectors. Baschmann also is licensed by the state of New York to do safety, heavy vehicle and trailer inspections. Various manufacturers provide ongoing training for the company’s technicians. Peter Baschmann is committed to keeping the service team well prepared for all the new technology and advancements in the heavy equipment industry. The service team also works to keep up with the latest updates and warranty issues through use of live online factory resources to keep customers working at peak efficiency. “Service is one of the reasons we’ve been able to grow as a successful dealership,” said Peter. “We have many brand loyal and repeat customers because of our service department.” continued on page 8 6

their application. “We pride ourselves on being knowledgeable about all of the machines we sell, from excavators to stump grinders and everything in between,” said Sales Manager Bob Tracy. Working with a full line of excavators from Kobelco gives the sales team plenty of options for their customers. The recent acquisition of ASV by Terex has broadened the company’s offering in the compact equipment field. Terex has mini-excavators from 3,700 to 28,000 lbs. (1,678 to 12,700 kg) and hydrostatic wheel loaders up to 6.5 cu. yds. (5 cu m) capacity; redesigned tractor loader backhoes a full line of compact track loaders as well as a new line of very competitive skid steer loaders. LiuGong is providing Baschmann Services with a wide range of wheel loaders, excavators and more. Eager Beaver Trailer’s full line gets the equipment to the job. Carlton is providing a wide range of both disk and drum chippers along with its excellent selection of stump grinders, self-propelled and tow-behind. Ferguson and Beuthling rollers continue to provide quality compaction equipment for a broad range of applications. For forestry and recycling applications, Baschmann Services can provide its customers with a Peterson product to suit any wood debarking, chipping and grinding needs. When it comes to attachments for skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders or whatever application a customer has, Baschmann Services is the place to go. Stocking many attachments from Kent/FRD Demolition, Paladin (Sweepster, Bradco, FFC, Harley), Fecon mulching equipment, Lowe augers and trenchers, Virnig, Construction Attachments and Erskine, Baschmann Services has what a customer needs.

Rentals — Anytime You Need Them The sales team realizes that time is money for contractors and will often go to the job site to see in person what challenges the contractor is facing. “Doing this allows our team to help provide the right tool for the job, whether it is plowing snow, grinding a stump or digging a basement,” said Sales Manager Bob Tracy. “Rentals often lead to sales; after 25 years in the heavy equipment industry, we are very good at securing financing that fits our customers needs,” said Peter. Purchase and lease plans are arranged through major finance companies, local banks and manufacturer sponsored programs. “This is a capital intense business for dealers and contractors, we pride ourselves on the funding process,” Peter added. “Because of the upstate [New York] economy, many people tend not to buy until there is a clear need and may want to rent a machine before making the commitment to purchase it.“ The company rents equipment across the state of New York on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Aggregate Equipment Experts Mike Peters is the aggregate equipment sales manager. Mike had his start at Baschmann’s in the service department as service manager where he was introduced to the aggregate side of the business. Over time, Mike’s passion for working with customers and helping them obtain the desired product in their application has helped in building strong relationships. George Haas has recently joined the aggregate sales team. His territory covers most of eastern New York State and some of the surrounding areas. He comes with an engineering background and a wealth of experience in the aggregate industry. A full line of crushing, screening, material handling, washing and track-mounted equipment support the aggregate end of the business. Pug mills also are available for sale and rent. The company has learned over the years that its competitive edge comes from being a partner with its customers, not just selling them complicated equipment. A Baschmann service technician is available to go with each rental or sale to make sure the customer is operating the machinery correctly and productively. continued on page 14

Another Generation Pete Baschmann Jr. has been around the family business since he can remember. Growing up, he had repeated exposure to the construction equipment industry working with his father on weekends and summers. After high school, Pete Jr. attended Alfred State, a Diesel Tech School, followed by joining the United States Marine Corp Reserves. Pete Jr. has just returned from Afghanistan where he utilized his mechanical experience to help maintain company assets and vehicles in support of combat operations. This experience has helped prepared Pete Jr. for his new role as rental fleet manager. His responsibilities include maintaining and preparing equipment for rent and tracking the whereabouts of each piece of equipment assigned to the rental fleet. The Next Twenty-Five Years “After 25 years in business, I still enjoy the challenges of a growing business and I look forward to the future,” said Peter Baschmann. “We’re ready for any changes in the industry and are excited to be working with a new generation of employees and customers.” CEG

R.E. Lorenz Building a Future With Baschmann, Kobelco The father and son team of Ed and Rod Lorenz own R.E. Lorenz Construction Inc., a site contracting company that focuses on western New York and the Southern Tier. The company’s roots go back to 1946 when Ed’s father, Walter, started a construction company in Buffalo, N.Y. Restoring a ‘National Treasure’ Leads to Business Partnership The Kolberg screening plant that Harvey Anderson fondly refers to as “the national treasure” dates back to the 1970s is how his relationship with Baschmann Services began. They were able to quickly locate the parts needed to get this machine up and running, which had been abandoned for years.

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. And in 2004, Harry Anderson, general manager of Suit-Kote’s Polkville crushed stone facility, was able to see past an upside-down, weed-covered piece of equipment to the treasure it could become. And in the process, Anderson and Suit-Kote found a valuable partner in Baschmann Services. The hidden treasure Anderson discovered was an abandoned and forgotten piece of equipment in one of Suit-Kote’s gravel pits. It was a Kolberg Pioneer screening plant that had been abandoned for approximately 15 years and had been originally manufactured in the early 1970s. Anderson felt that the machine was not in as bad a shape as it looked and thought that if the machine could be restored it could be put to proper use in his Polkville crushed stone facility. Anderson gathered up some of Suit-Kote’s employees who were especially creative and enjoyed a challenge and had them take a look at the long abandoned machine. As he suspected, the consensus was that the screener could be restored to functionality with a few new parts, a weld here and there, and a lot of elbow grease. continued on page 22 20

Anderson had no knowledge of Baschmann Services and not a lot of experience with Kolberg Pioneer products (now known as KPI-JCI). After conducting an online search, he found out that Baschmann Services in Elma, N.Y., was the closest dealer to him that would have availability to Kolberg Pioneer parts. One of the items Suit-Kote employees was able to recover from the abandoned screening plant was the original serial number plate. Without a whole lot of optimism Anderson called the parts and service department at Baschmann Services with a description of the parts and the serial number of the machine that they were trying to restore. Much to his surprise, a few hours later he received a return phone call from Baschmann Services. They had been able to locate all of the parts that he was looking for. They also had information on when the machine was originally sold, whom it was sold to, and a schematic along with owner’s manual for the entire machine. Based on the tremendous service that he received on a machine that hadn’t even been purchased from Baschmann Services, a new relationship started to grow. Mike Peters, the aggregate and recycling sales manager of Baschmann Services and Pete Baschmann, president, made their services available to Suit-Kote for their future equipment needs and shortly thereafter those services were utilized. “One of the things that really sealed my relationship with Mike Peters is that at one point I was looking for a wash plant, which Baschmann did not have available, and to help us out with nothing for him to gain himself, Mike located the plant for us,” said Anderson “A few years ago we were looking to crush rap at our pit and we were looking at horizontal shaft impact portable crushers. The company that we ordinarily hired continued on page 23 22

to do this crushing for us was not available so with the intentions of simply renting the machine we rented a brand new horizontal shaft impact KPI-JCI Fast Trax crusher for a month or two. “Machines that we had seen in the past that were only able to crush at a rate of about 30 tons per hour. The machine that we rented from Baschmann Services was able to process at a rate of 150 to 200 tons per hour. After a few months rent with great production and very low maintenance cost we purchased the machine and have never looked back. “We have continued to run concrete and asphalt through this machine for the last several years. It has been very reliable and inexpensive to operate. Blow bars and other wear items that we have needed we have been able to purchase from Baschmann Services at very realistic prices.” “Sometime later we were looking to rent a 400 horsepower vertical shaft impact crusher. After explaining my needs to Mike and Pete, we took a road trip to Peoria, Illinois, to look at a few of the VSI Crushers that KPI-JCI manufactures, both in the field working and one at the KPI-JCI Dealership in that area. Once we decided what the size and configuration of the crusher should be for our application, Baschmann purchased a new crusher from the factory and put the machine that we needed into their rental fleet. They rented it to us for a few months, and then took the machine back after our needs had been satisfied.”
