Work on a Utah freeway reconstruction project so unusual it was featured as National Geographic Channel’s “World’s Toughest Fixes” is heading for an on-time, on-budget completion at the end of the year. What made work on a 2-mi. (3.2 km) stretch of I-80 in Salt Lake City project extraordinary was the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method using Self Propelled Modular Transports (SPMT) to construct six of 12 bridges and one of two ramps in the project. The $139 million project along a 2-mi. stretch from State Street to 1300 East through Salt Lake City includes construction of the bridges and ramp “not at their final location,” John Montoya, project manager, said. Instead, the girders and decks were constructed on the ground at a “bridge farm.” Massive transporters moved them to be lifted into place along the expressway.

Horrocks Engineering and H.W. Lochner Engineering are the designers and Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction is the general contractor. Some of the bridges were transported as much as a mile and a half which is “a good distance,” Montoya said. “That was significant. There are a fair amount of projects where you move a bridge a couple hundred feet but we actually moved some of them a mile and a half.” The bridges that were moved vary in length from 85 to 173 ft. (25.9 to 52.7 m) and were 43 to 94 ft. (13 to 28.6 m) wide, Carlye Sommers, public involvement manager for Lochner, said. The largest weighed in at 1,350 tons (1,220 t). The SPMTs that moved the bridges had approximately 250 wheels and moved at an average speed of five miles per hour, Sommers said. Health care reform in the United States has been beaten nearly to death this year by advocates and critics alike. Yet as the debate moves into October, the final shape of “reform” remains elusive and elastic with construction industry executives anxious about its impact on their companies. Any change in the system definitely will have impact on contractors and a sweeping change could upend smaller firms — and most construction companies are small-tomedium-sized. The truth of the matter is the reform model in which government would provide most health care services would dramatically change the way every business operates, large or small. It is impractical to hope that health care reform will be tailored to the construction industry. Nevertheless, small businesses consistently favor certain reform initiatives over others. Were Washington to institute reform along the lines general contractors might lay down, the following features would be among the legislated changes: • New authority for associations to negotiate insurance packages for their members. Besides gaining clout in negotiating benefits, association insurance negotiators could win lower premiums, if given the opportunity. Associated Builders and Contractors noted that private insurance carriers must mark up premiums as much as 35 percent when dealing with small groups in order to meet profit targets and offset overhead. In trucking, cooperation is everything. The same could be said for construction work, all contracting and the running of any successful club or organization. Cooperation in all these arenas came together as one at the Antique Truck Club of America’s Little Rhody Chapter’s Sixth Annual Antique Truck Show on Sept. 13 on the Washington County Fairgrounds in Richmond, R.I. Working in conjunction with the Historical Construction Equipment Association’s (HCEA) Northeast Rockbusters once again, more than 60 members of the local Antique Truck Club brought out their finest old equipment, to the delight and surprise of other members, guests and enthusiasts. The Antique Truck Club and the Rockbusters hold this event every September, drawing people from every New England state. Machines that range from the unusual to the sublime fill the flat fields of the fairgrounds for passersby to

admire. “We combine our shows. We support them and they support us, even in the rain,” said Jackie Volatile, who organizes these shows with her husband, Roger, the club’s president. What made the presidential couple so proud this year was that the event was organized to raise money and food for the Rhode Island Food Bank. We brought in 800 pounds of canned goods. Last year, we fed 2,000 needy families for a year and we are quite proud of that,” said Jackie Volatile. They also are very proud of the cooperation and shared interests of their members who bring any and all working antique machines to these events, as long as they are able. “We welcome classic trucks, we welcome tractors, anything that comes in,” added Roger Volatile. “Antique is antique to us.” The Volatiles represent the Little Rhody Chapter at national events, usually held in the National Chapter’s home state of Pennsylvania. “There are 21 different chapters in the see ROCKBUSTERS page 14

A short 19-mi. (30.5 km) stretch of road just north of Detroit has been transformed into an improvement project with a rather complicated strategy. Extensive work on the I-96/I-696 corridor in Oakland and Macomb counties has been divided into four separate projects. Project 1 consists of rehabilitation of eight bridges and repair of 4 mi. (6.4 km) of pavement in Oakland County between Novi and Halsted roads, including the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange in Novi and Farmington Hills. Project 2 picks up where the first project ends and involves pavement patching and rehabilitation of 42 bridges on I-696 in Oakland County between Halsted and Campbell-Hilton roads. Project 3 focuses on rehabilitating 22 bridges on I-696, 15 of which are located within the I696/Mound Road interchange. Project 4 includes rehabilitation of six bridges and extensive pavement repairs to I-696 between Hayes and Nieman roads in Macomb County. Also included are safety upgrades and lighting replacement on the median and ramps. Overlap For all practical purposes, the $67 million overall project has been divided into two contracts — east and west — with two prime contractors: Dan’s Excavating out of Grant, Mich., on the west contract and C.A. On July 9 officials in Nashville, Tenn., broke ground on Phase II of the Interstate 40 White Bridge Road Interchange Improvement Project. Phase I was finished during the summer 2005. Since then, the project has been stalled for four years because of lack of funding. Now, the $32million project is being totally funded through money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which the President signed into law in February. Many dignitaries, including Gov. Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner Gerald Nicely, were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. “This project will enhance Nashville’s already excellent transportation system,” said Bredesen at the ceremony. “It will improve access to Interstate 40 and Briley Parkway and will contribute to continued economic development in West Nashville.”

Bell & Associates Construction LP, Brentwood, Tenn., is the prime contractor for Phase II, which includes a new interchange at I40 and Briley Parkway/White Bridge Road/Robertson Road. The company also constructed the $43-million Phase I.

Bell & Associates Construction is the prime contractor for the $32 million project. The company has all-terrain cranes by Lorain hard at work on the job site.

The contract also includes construction of two flyover ramps to and from I-40 and Briley Parkway, plus the replacement of the White Bridge Road Bridge over I-40. In addition, three noise barriers and five retaining walls will be built and a pedestrian bridge located just west of the interchange will be replaced. “The project is just over a mile long,” explained Jeremy Mitchell, project manager with Bell & Associates. There will be “three lanes west and three lanes east on I-40 and two auxiliary lanes for the new ramps.” The Interstate will be constructed of asphalt, and the ramps will be concrete paving. There will be more than 20,000 cu. yds. (15,200 cu. m) of concrete used on this project. The two major bridges being built are the White Bridge Road Bridge and the pedestrian bridge. The White Bridge Road Bridge, measuring just over 1,500 ft. (457 m) long, is being constructed of single-column hammerhead piers and structural steel plate girders. The pedestrian bridge is approximately 230 ft. (70 m) long and see TDOT page 40

Federal Report Backs Fla.’s Industry Lobbies Approach to Stimulus Cash for Common Sense in Reform By Bill Kaczor

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Gov. Charlie Crist and his “stimulus czar’’ said Oct. 9 that a recent federal report supports Florida’s go-slow approach to spending federal recovery money earmarked for highway projects and schools. Even so, Florida’s overall stimulus spending is a bit ahead of schedule, said czar Don Winstead, whose official title is special adviser to the governor on economic stimulus. Federal officials in February said they expected the state to spend about 20 percent of its estimated $15 billion in stimulus money by the end of September. “I think we will be ahead of that sched-

ule,’’ Winstead said. “We are seeing rapid deployment and we’ll see over the next couple of months additional rapid deployment of some of the larger projects.’’ In letters to state lawmakers and members of Florida’s congressional delegation, Crist cited a Government Accountability Office report that focuses on stimulus spending for education, transportation and Medicaid. Winstead spoke about it in a teleconference with reporters. In August, U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, a Minnesota Democrat who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, sent Crist a letter chiding Florida for ranking last in spending stimulus money designated for highway projects and urged him to “refocus your efforts.’’

Western States hosted a construction technology demonstration event for its customers Sept. 15 to 17 behind the Boise First Community Center, located at 3852 N. Eagle Road in Boise, Idaho.

Western States hosted a construction technology demonstration event for its customers Sept. 15 to 17. The event took place behind the Boise First Community Center, located at 3852 N Eagle Road in Boise, Idaho, and displayed the latest in Trimble and Cat machine control technology. This Western States Technology Solutions demo benefited the Idaho Sports Foundation. Western States cleared 18 acres of land to help prepare for future soccer fields, football fields, baseball fields, softball fields and much more. This unique sports complex will benefit the community of the Treasure Valley and the surrounding areas for generations. One beneficiary of the event is Central Paving of Boise who is able to speed its jobsite production of the I-84 and Vista interchange in Boise with the use of laser and GPS technology. The Technology Group of Western States supplies customers such as Central Paving, HK Construction, and B&G Dirtworks with laser and GPS technology that is mounted on equipment. scape projects. “With the use of the technology provided by Western States, we’re able to finish a job faster,” said Ryan Ward, project manager for Central Paving. “In a large job like the Vista interchange near the Boise airport, we’ll be able to get the grading done quicker and avoid scheduling complications.” “Our laser and GPS technology provides contractors with position information and automation of machinery to control grade in real time,” said Michael Hasslbauer, technology solutions manager of Western States. “The real time application of information boosts efficiency and puts the contractor and operator in control of saving machine time, man hours, fuel and survey costs.” As an authorized Trimble and AccuGrade dealer, Western States Equipment offers the laser and GPS technology as part of its total equipment and service package. ICUEE Celebrates Second Largest Show in Its History

he International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) attracted more than 16,500 registered attendees — making it the second largest in show history despite a down economy, especially in construction-related markets. Also known as The Demo Expo for its trademark of extensive equipment demonstrations in job-like conditions, ICUEE 2009 took place Oct. 6 to 8 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. More than 780 exhibitors used more than 1 million net sq. ft. of outdoor and indoor exhibit space. The show focuses on the utility/construction industry, including electric, phone and cable, sewer and water, gas, general construction, landscaping and public works. “The feedback was very positive from exhibitors and attendees. This was a great opportunity for the industry to get together and assess where they are now and plan for the future. ICUEE was definitely the place to be if you wanted to test-drive the latest equipment innovations and keep up to date on industry trends,” stated Show Director Melissa Magestro. “We encourage industry co-locations to bring maximum ROI to all participants, and ICUEE 2009 had a record number. Their support contributed greatly to our success.” The inaugural H2O-XPO of the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) chose to co-locate with ICUEE 2009, as did the iP Safety Conference and Expo (safety and training) and the IUV Technology Conference (design and engineering). NRWA held its annual convention in conjunction with ICUEE 2009. “Our industry has been one of the hardest hit during the recession, so we’re especially gratified by this support. Participants saw value in the type of face-to-face contact you can only get at trade shows, and the value of a quality show ‘run by the industry, for the benefit of the industry,’ which is our operating philosophy,” stated Magestro. An extensive and well-rounded education program also contributed to the success of ICUEE 2009. Attendees took advantage of more than 100 sessions to pro-actively manage their businesses to increase productivity and operating efficiencies. Field trips and an HDD workshop complemented the classroom learning. Among the “top 10” most popular education session topics were new opportunities in emerging “green” technologies such as solar and wind power, and a special panel discussion focused on the emerging “smart grid” electric power infrastructure. The number-one reason attendees come to ICUEE is to see new products and innovations, and a record 150 exhibitors signed on to the show’s New Product & Technology Program, which highlights exhibitors’ new-to-market innovations. Program participants are listed online in a section of the exhibitor directory (searchable by company name, product category or booth number). This will remain online for several months after the show. A special utility champions display onsite recognized the dedication of utility workers who respond tirelessly during disaster recovery efforts (and also see online). Trulove Expanding Into Asphalt Paving in Colorado In spring 2008 when the housing decline stagnated the construction industry, one contractor saw his glass half full. Ty Trulove saw an opportunity to expand his excavating business and move into asphalt paving. Trulove Excavating is a site prep and earthmoving company in the Aspen/Glenwood Springs, Colo., area. Trulove has enjoyed steady work over the years; however, the company began to experience a considerable slowdown in work. In March 2008, Ty Trulove made the decision to venture into asphalt paving to offset the loss of excavation and site prep project work. Trulove was motivated to make the jump into paving when he noticed that the largest asphalt company in the valley area was turning away smaller jobs. Trulove considered the potential for his business and made initial inquiries to see if there would be enough paving work on smaller jobs to justify growing his business. The potential was there, and Trulove started Rocky Mountain Paving. Once Trulove decided his idea had roots, he went looking for an equipment dealer. Trulove’s dealer at the time didn’t take the same interest in his new venture, so he looked for a dealer that specialized in asphalt

paving in Colorado. Trulove quickly found Faris Machinery and called Eric Poulson. “From the beginning, Eric was very positive about our business expansion,” said Trulove. “He was extremely knowledgeable about the industry and what we would need, and this was the key factor for deciding to partner with Faris Machinery.” Faris Machinery has been serving the construction industry in Colorado for more than 50 years and is a leader in paving equipment. Much of Faris Machinery’s success can be attributed to the investment the dealership makes with its customers, focusing on longtime partnerships instead of point of sale. “Ty recognized our reputation in the paving equipment marketplace,” said Poulson. “Faris Machinery has the expertise for the training Rocky Mountain Paving needed to get into the paving business.” Poulson said they had sold equipment to Trulove in the past, but this was the first opportunity they had with Trulove on a large capital purchase. Poulson discussed with Trulove the types of paving and the terrain the company would be working in to recommend the best paver for their operations. Much of the paving work Trulove expected would be trails, golf courses, driveways and

some road work. “Rocky Mountain Paving wouldn’t be doing any mainline highway paving, but they would need a machine large enough to do county roads and intersections,” said Poulson. The recommendation from Poulson was the Volvo PF4410 asphalt paver with a Volvo Ultimat screed. The PF4410 is an 8-ft. (2.4 m) commercial tracked paver, which

can accommodate the steep and rough terrain typical in the valley area. Trulove paired the paver with a Volvo DD31HF double drum asphalt compactor rental. “For the work we’d be doing, it made the most sense to use a tracked paver,” explained Trulove. (NAPA) gives out its Quality in Construction Awards, the judges consider smoothness as one of the criteria they use in determining the winners. The projects presented here all have at least two things in common: they all won 2009 Quality in Construction Awards from NAPA, and they all used Topcon System 5 electronic grade control systems to control the screeds on their pavers. Due in large part to electronic screed controls, the contractor achieved excellent asphalt smoothness results in building 16 mi. (25.7 km) of new four-lane highway in Idaho. For the new section of U.S. 95 near Genesee, Poe Asphalt Paving Inc. used a Blaw-Knox 5510 paver equipped with a Topcon tracker that read a stringline on the first leveling lift of asphalt. For most of the second lift and all of the third, Poe ran two Topcon non-contact skis, one suspended from each side of the paver. Poe used a stringline for the first lift because the paver had to run on a base of cap rock, which consists of large 3-in. (7.6 cm) stones. “We paved the leveling course — and even part of the

intermediate course — using a stringline because the cap rock was prone to some movement under the paver,” said Josh Smith, highway division manager of Poe. “That rock has little or no fines to hold it together. It’s designed for drainage.” John Cushman, Poe’s equipment manager, said the Topcon System 5 works very well to control the paver screed. “We’ve had great results with it,” Cushman said. “And our Topcon dealer has provided us with good support. The Topcon System 5 and non-contact ski is the best system available for achieving maximum smoothness.” Smith said Poe earned a substantial smoothness bonus for its work on U.S. 95. The International Roughness Index numbers ranged around 45, compared to a target of 60 or less — less is better. paving machine. The PF4410 has a hydrostatic direct traction drive that makes the paver very efficient on the job and keeps maintenance of the drivetrain to a minimum. The high traction and low ground pressure of the track system, along with a 158-hp (118 kW) Cummins engine, give the PF4410 the power to stay level while pushing the material truck uphill and the power to keep the screed level to lay a smooth mat. The counter-rotating tracks allow for tight maneuverability, which is ideal for the steep grades that Poulson and Trulove discussed. “Wheels can slip and get stuck in this area,” said Poulson. “The PF4410 definitely has the power for the pull needed for these types of paving jobs.” Once Trulove obtained the right equipment, it was time to go back to school to learn how to operate it. Faris Machinery teamed up with Volvo and its Road Institute to provide training to the Rocky Mountain Paving crew. Road Institute has provided service- and operation-based training to Volvo customers and industry personnel for more than 40 years. Volvo has two Road Institute locations in operation, one in Shippensburg, Pa., and the other in Phoenix, Ariz. Because the paving season was already upon them, it wasn’t feasible for the crew to travel to either location for training, so Faris Machinery and Steve Passmore, regional product manager for the road machinery division of Volvo Construction Equipment, teamed up to mirror the Road Institute curriculum especially for Rocky Mountain Paving in Glenwood Springs.

Located on SR 528, the project covered 66 lane mi. (106 km) and entailed milling up 3.5 in. (9 cm) of asphalt, then placing two structural lifts back — first a 2-in. (5 cm) lift, then a 1.5-in. (3.8 cm) lift. “We ran a non-contact ski on one side of the paver and used slope control on the other side where necessary,” said Paul Miller, construction manager for Orlando Paving. “We love the Topcon system,” said Miller. “We’ve had Topcon for several years and we’ve had no problems with it whatsoever. All of our pavers are equipped with Topcon System 5 controllers and they all use non-contact skis. The contractor did not use a Roadtec Shuttle Buggy for the two structural lifts, but did so for the 0.75-in. (1.9 cm) open-graded friction course on the surface. “With the Shuttle Buggy you keep a constant movement, a steady pace and you virtually eliminate segregation,” said Miller. The results on the surface course were a 4.17 ride number on a laser profiler, with 5.0 being the best possible score.

“The paver moved along at about 30 to 35 feet per minute,” said Miller. “Anything faster would be moving too fast. “We did a lot of round robin paving, where the trucks would bring out hot mix for paving and pick up milled asphalt to take back to the plant site.” The contractor produced and laid 160,000 tons (145,150 t) of hot mix asphalt in just 310 days. All paving was done at night on the heavily-traveled roadway, which carried between 45,000 and 90,000 vehicles per day. The contractor worked the project between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on the mainline and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the ramps. Basically that left six hours in which to pave, due to the time required to mobilize and demobilize traffic control devices and to stripe the pavement at the end of the shift. Even though it was a high-production operation, safety came first, Miller said. The project was completed, under heavy traffic, with no accidents involving the construction operations. “On a project like this one, we have a number of safety procedures to plan and set up, and we make sure that we have the discipline to follow them,” said Miller. “We had safety meetings every night before work began and dis-

Working safely is a matter of good common sense, but you need to have the commitment to use all the right procedures and protocols.” Smoothness in Georgia Using electronic grade controls and a material transfer vehicle proved the keys to exceptional smoothness on two stretches of a mill-and-overlay project in Hinesville, Ga. The Georgia DOT specifies that a milled asphalt surface meet a smoothness requirement of 1,325 mm/km — and the finished pavement must meet a spec of 1,025 mm/km. “So we used our electronic grade controls on the milling machines,” said Robert Royal, area manager for APACSoutheast in Savannah. The project was 4.734 mi. (7.6 km) long, and APAC used two milling machines — one equipped with a Topcon System 5 and the other with a non-Topcon electronic grade control system. The APAC paving crew improved the ride of the old pavement by 46 percent. “I’ve worked with the Topcon screed controller and with other models,” said Elmer Baggett, APAC/Southeast equipment manager. “I prefer the Topcon over anything else by far, because it’s more durable. As long as you set it up properly, the Topcon System 5 does great.” Smooth Milling “Smoothness of milling is all about continuity and truck management. We operated the milling machines at a pretty slow travel speed, to permit more revolutions per minute of the cutter. Plus we wanted to flow the trucks smoothly to and from the mill’s conveyor belt. With paving, you want to mini-

mize stops of the paver, and that’s what the Shuttle Buggy will do. By serving as a transfer vehicle, it helps maintain continuity of the entire paving operation,” Royal said. All milling and paving was done at night, under traffic. “We have a dedicated traffic control crew that pre-places our maintenance-of-traffic [MOT] devices,” said Royal. “They ride the lane closures and move the MOT devices as needed to make sure we follow the state specs. “We ran between 18 and 22 trucks on mainline pulls,” Royal said. The trucks hauled asphalt 36 mi. (58 km) from the plant in Savannah to the site in Hinesville. “We had excellent project management to coordinate between the roadway and the plant,” Royal said. James D. (Darrell) Cannon was the project manager; Joe Hires was the quality control manager. Jeff Andrews was the operations manager and Elmer Baggett “was a tremendous help in making sure that all of the paving equipment and corresponding electronics were set up properly and in good working order,” Royal said.

Senate Appropriations Committee. Earlier in 2009, he had offered an amendment to a bill to cancel the rescissions, but it was defeated. He was assured a fix would occur before Sept. 30. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaction [to cancel the rescissions] took the shovels out of the hands of American workers across the country,â&#x20AC;? Bond said after the September vote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This rescission will translate into the loss of thousands of jobs and the canceling of transportation infrastructure projects throughout the country, which is equivalent to pouring salt into the wounds of those seeking employment during the economic downturn.â&#x20AC;? What Congress takes away, of course, it also can give and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what observers on and off Capitol Hill believe will happen eventually. The question is, when? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I talked to our staff yesterday about this,â&#x20AC;? House Transportation Committee spokesman Berard said a few days after the vote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are no talks yet about what happens at the end of October. It is sort of like when you are in college: You wait until the last moment and then ask for an extension. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is possible that at some point within the next 12 months Congress may decide it wants to rescind the rescission,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is not the committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position. Our position is we are going to try to push for a six-year bill to solve that problem and others. If we pass it, the states will be getting more money than they are losing.â&#x20AC;? There is no question that the House bill would up the ante for transportation. Its price tag is $450 billion, a 57 percent increase over the current $285 billion funding authority. It virtually doubles the amount of money set aside for the Highway Trust Fund â&#x20AC;&#x201D; $87 billion â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and reorganizes the bill into four funding categories. How to pay for all that is not spelled out, which is precisely the discussion that Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and the rest of the Obama administration wish to defer until 2010. However, with construction unemployment in the range of 17 percent, deferring a decision about new highway funding is not what the industry is after. Berard said the House committee is aware of the need to get construction people to work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is something that Chairman Oberstar talks about every chance he gets,â&#x20AC;? Berard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He talks all the time about unemployment in construction and how we need to move the bill. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the things we point out to convince the administration we need to move. The transportation bill can act as another stimulus package.â&#x20AC;? Dorsey at AASHTO credited the administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stimulus package with ramping up work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the stimulus bill has had a positive impact on construction. Jobs have been created. What we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let happen now is for the industry to move one step forward and two steps back by not getting extensions as necessary or not getting a six-year bill. AASHTO would prefer a six-year bill sooner rather than later.â&#x20AC;? The â&#x20AC;&#x153;sooner-or-laterâ&#x20AC;? decision for a transportation bill seems inextricably tied to passage of a health care bill. Senate leaders have indicated they believe the priority debate for now is health care. Just how quickly and decisively that issue is resolved will determine how soon or how late transportation funding will receive its due deliberation. Felling’s Air Tilt Deck-Over Eliminates Need for Hydraulics In September of this year Felling Trailers released the Air Tilt Deck-Over. This design utilizes air, powered from the tow vehicle, to tilt the trailer and optional ramps, eliminating the need for hydraulics. The air power from the tow vehicle fills two air bags, which then raise the trailer smoothly; the air bag will then keep the deck in the tilted position to allow for loading/unloading of multiple pieces of equipment. The deck then lowers itself by releasing the air pressure at a controlled rate to prevent the deck from slamming down. These trailers also are

equipped with Felling’s air-latch system (deck lock). This allows the user to lock and unlock the deck with the flip of a switch instead of working with cumbersome levers or walking from one side of the deck to the other. Towing capability and balance were achieved by placing the axles further back on the Air Tilt model than other tilt trailers on the market. These models also are useful for transporting low

clearance equipment such as pavers, scissor lifts, forklifts and more with its low-clearance loading angle. With the option of ramps, a load angle as low as 7 degrees can be achieved for loading equipment. In the construction of this trailer Felling uses a high grade 80 steel for the main structural beams that was fabricated inhouse. The use of these beams in turn

increases the trailer’s strength yet reduces the total trailer weight. There are two base models for the Air Tilt; the FT-40 TA, which has a load capacity of 40,000 lbs. (18,143 kg) and the FT-50-3 TA with a load capacity of 50,000 lbs. (22,679 kg). Rogers detachable and fixed gooseneck lowbed trailers are available in specialized models. Geith Unveils New Mechanical MX Couplers Designed for Minis The line of Geith mini-excavator (MX) attachments has expanded with the launch of a new line of mini-excavator couplers. The Geith mechanical MX coupler is designed to fit mini-excavators from 4,000 to 12,000 lbs. (1,814 to 5,443 kg) with pin diameters from 1.2 to 1.7 in. (3 to 4.5 cm). A three step operation allows this pin-grab style coupler to increase work-site productivity without sacrificing operator safety: 1.Engage coupler hook onto leading pin of bucket and curl in the coupler. 2.Lock the attachment into place by turning the locking nut with the tool provided. 3.Turn the integrated safety pin to the locked position. The integrated safety pin provides additional operator safety by serving as a secondary locking mechanism that cannot be lost or thrown

away. In addition, Geith mechanical MX couplers feature a custom OEM pin grab mechanism design to fit attachments designed for each carrier model. As an added benefit, the MX coupler allows the bucket to be reversed and used in a shovel position. Former AGC of WA President Vic Scalzo Passes Away at 89 Victor Joseph Scalzo, 89, passed away peacefully on Sept. 17. He was president of AGC Mountain Pacific Chapter (later AGC of WA) in 1961 and an honorary AGC of Washington member. Scalzo began his career in highway construction at an early age following in his father’s footsteps. Along with his brothers Joseph and Robert, he owned and operated the family business, Thomas Scalzo Construction Co. He is survived by his wife Rosemary Gai Scalzo, his three children Marlene Miller (John), Steve Scalzo (Angela), and Debora Centioli and brother Robert Scalzo; seven grandchildren, John Miller (Sally), Crissey Miller, Alicia Wilmoth (Jon), Shelley Brown (Chris), Annemarie Scalzo, Lauren Centioli, Cicilia Centioli; two great-grandchildren, Johnny and Jamie Miller and many nieces and nephews. HCEAHosts Annual Convention in Ohio

he Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA), a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving history of the construction, dredging and surface mining equipment industries, held its 24th Annual International Convention and Old Equipment Exposition Sept. 18 to 20. This year, the show was held at the National Construction Equipment Museum, located at 16623 Liberty Hi Road, Bowling Green, Ohio. Highlights of the show included live demonstrations of horse-drawn, gas and diesel-powered antique construction machinery, equipment and vehicles built or powered by International Harvester were featured, along with other machines in the National Construction Equipment Museum collection. Some of the equipment actually got back into the swing of things by digging a one-acre pond on the site, with the spoil being used to create a massive pile of dirt for the shovels and excavators. Members of the Black Swamp Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society came by on Saturday to showcase their vintage trucks. The event also featured a banquet held at the Grand Rapids Roadhouse. Vendors also were on hand to offer vintage construction toys as well as old equipment manuals and decals as well as other vintage construction equipment related items.
