Solar demand in MEA region grows by 50%

Solar PV demand in the Middle

The construction of the Pemba Port Logistical Base, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, is set to start in January 2015 with the first phase of construction budgeted at US$150m.

The first phase will include the building of the logistical base and the installations for the production and assembly of the subsea equipment used in the hydrocarbon industry. The new port in the city of Pemba will have a 300 meter dock capable of receiving ships with a maximum draught of 12 meters and a variety of other facilities on a 36-hectare plot.

The facility will support the hydrocarbon industry in the Rovuma Basin, where huge amounts of natural gas have been discovered. The logistical base has been sub-leased to the recently formed company ENHILS, which is composed of Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) and the Nigerian company Orlean Invest who have extensive international experience in developing logistical bases to support the hydrocarbon industry. This venture is the first of its kind in Mozambique.

East and Africa (MEA) region is set to grow 50 %year-over-year in 2014. This is according to a NPD Solarbuzz’s Emerging PV Markets Report: Middle East and Africa. The report adds that between 2014 and 2018, annual PV demand will nearly triple as the MEA region becomes a key market for the global industry.

By 2018, annual PV demand in the region is expected to reach 4.4 GW, with an upside potential of 10 GW. PV demand from the MEA region in 2013 grew by 670 %, compared to 2012 when the region added approximately 140 MW, the research group points out. Previously, the region had a substantial share of small off-grid PV systems; however, in 2013 the on-grid segment became the main factor driving growth to more than 1 GW, with 1.6 GW forecast for 2014.

US$1.10bn cultural and leisure centre in the offing

Wessal Capital an investment fund focused on developing tourism in Morocco has announced the launch of its second largest project worth US$1.10bn in Rabat in a bid to build a new cultural and leisure centre for both the tourists and local residents. The project is a joint venture supported by Kuwait Investment Authority’s Al Ajial Investments, Qatari fund Qatar Holding, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Aabar, Saudi Investment Fund and Moroccan Fund for Tourism Development (FMDT). The project will be built on a 110 hectare area and will encompass the construction of a new marina for promoting tourism, hotels, residential housings, urban green spaces and a theater. The project is the second part of the Bouregreg valley development. According to Lahcen Haddad the Minister for Tourism, Rabat the capital city of Morocco is starting to become a great cultural destination a reason for huge investments in theaters and museums adding that the government plans to also invest 9 billion dirham (US$1bn) in renovating urban areas of the city.

Kenya's Moi University has commissioned the construction of a US$356m, 26 storey complex in Eldoret town in western Kenya. The magnificent twin-tower building is being constructed next to Imperial Bank along Uganda Road and is expected to be the tallest and biggest building in the town.

According to Moi University Pension Scheme (Mups) Trustee Chebutuk Rotich, the iconic structure will have a parking space for 600 vehicles to help curb the issue of parking in the town, it will also contain modern technology in that clients will access the building either using access cards or finger biometric readings, besides screening at the main gate, and every floor will have CCTV cameras for enhanced security.

New Energy Technologies Inc. (NENE), developer of see-through SolarWindowTM coatings, capable of generating electricity on glass and flexible plastics, has announced that its technology has set a new record for generating electricity while remaining see-through with over 50% greater power than prior attempts publicized by others.

Cost management The role of a quantity surveyor (QS) is evolving from being one that typically only manages budgets and spreadsheets, to a cost manager

A cost manager is not only responsible for managing the budget, but also the level and accuracy of the scope of work 14

t’s well known in the industry that the success and return on investment (ROI) of a construction project is underpinned by three key pillars; quality, time and costs.

While each of these pillars may be upheld by different professionals or contractors to a project, they cannot exist independently of each other – for instance, time can cost money, where quality workmanship requires time and money, and yet without a clear scope of quality or the project, neither time nor costs can be sufficiently defined at the start of a project.

With this in mind, and as things continue to become more cost and time-sensitive in today’s economy, we are seeing the role of a quantity surveyor (QS) evolve, from being one that typically only manages budgets and spreadsheets, to a cost manager – a person who is able to provides invaluable consultation and cost management services to clients and contractors. In fact, the emerging cost manager is intrinsically involved in defining, managing and cementing all three pillars – quality, time and cost – towards the overall success of a project.

“The sky’s the limit” If we first consider quality, for instance, it stands to reason that the more accurate the design, the more effective the cost will be.

A cost manager therefore is not only responsible for managing the budget, but also the level and accuracy of the scope of work. To this end, while cost and project management remain two separate professional disciplines, it is essential that the cost manager is involved in the initial client briefings - to ensure that the scope of work is defined correctly from the start – and be able to impartially report on the budget to the client through each phase of a project.

Additionally, as the cost manager will manage any and all payments, they are primely positioned to ensure that the project is delivered on time within the conditions of contract, where using the latest available

technology will also guarantee that reporting is in line with what financial departments of the respective stakeholders require. This value added service can free up significant amounts of time for the project manager to be more proactive in anticipating and addressing potential problems in terms of construction.

By managing contractual administration keeping all parties in line with the conditions of contract, the cost manager is also able reduce and even mitigate certain risks associated with projects.

Counting on the hands of time Once the scope of quality or work has been clearly defined and outlined in a contact, the next biggest challenge on a construction project is managing the client’s expectations – particularly around time to project completion.

Often part of this challenge is that clients don’t give the professional team sufficient time to discern clear roles and responsibilities aligned to the scope of the project, delivering on deadline and within budget - and accountability if it doesn’t.

When in actual fact having clearly defined roles and responsibilities at the onset of a project - and that each party can hold each other accountable to - can save significant time when there is a clash or dispute that needs to be resolved, for instance.

While, a cost manager should always remain impartial where there may be a dispute – whether within the project management team, with labour on a site and/ or a client’s financial manager - a good cost manager should be focused on breaking the ice between the involved parties, without taking sides and with the aim of facilitating faster resolution – ensuring that the budget and project can be kept on track.

he used earthmoving equipment market in Africa has become a multi-million dollar business that has attracted not only many secondhand dealers but also online auction houses eager to tap into this fast growing market. Buyers in Africa are not new to the concept of used goods given their already insatiable appetite for used cars from Japan, Europe and Dubai. In the case of used cars several years ago it resulted in the collapse of several new car franchises in Africa which is a testament to how significant this market force is. Used machinery is here to stay and machinery franchise holders have even caught on the game by introducing what they call factory refurbished equipment in order to remain relevant to market expectations. And what are those expectations?

Reasonable prices for reasonably good equipment. When buying used equipment five key pointers emerged when we interviewed various global second hand dealers. We highlight them in this article as well who to go to and have peace of mind.

Inspection Firstly, just as with new equipment when buying used, a buyer needs to carefully inspect the equipment and enquire on any warranty availability. Inspection is key so check out for any oil leaks and welds on the structure of the machinery both of which can signal a poorly maintained machine or one which was used very roughly to the point of breaking, hence the welds. This is far cheaper than paying for an air ticket and accommodation costs if you were to do the inspection yourself. Lieven Pauwels of Machinery Resale of Belgium adds that you can even ask for a video clip of the machine to see it in action though hidden problems will not be easily noticed.

The way of the herd Secondly, going for equipment that is from the more popular brand names will ensure that parts will be available. You don’t want to get stuck with a brand name no one knows and hope to find spares for it round the corner when it breaks down. The scrap yard is filled with such machines that were purchased unwisely because of the unbeatable price offered and got grounded for lack of parts.

Price And that brings us to price. This should not be your only guide when buying a piece of equipment. Low price may result in upfront savings but misery later on with escalating costs due to downtime and repairs. Better to pay a little extra for a reasonable machine than June 2014

Pumps are used for a variety of purposes and this means that they come in various shapes and sizes from very large to very small each designed to accomplish specific tasks depending on the liquid or slurry to be conveyed, the rate or conveyance, height and rate. Recent trends have tended to focus on issues of raising efficiency, lowering cost and providing options in the type of energy used to drive the pumps. As part of his studies Urko participated in various architectural projects with NGOs in several countries, working as a volunteer, giving him invaluable experence in many different countries.

“I worked in different conflict zones” he recalls, “mostly building camps, schools and clinics. One of my first assignments was on the border of Somalia and Kenya, and I think perhaps that is where my love of East Africa first began.” After some years of experience, Urko decided to

make his base in Kenya and started off living in Lamu, enjoying the peace and tranquility after the high conflict countries he had been working in. He was commissioned to go back to Spain to renovate special up-market projects like the Real Madrid Football Club and the Salamanca Cathedral, before returning to Kenya after a couple of years. He built a hotel on Lamu island and found himself drawn more and more into building in Swahili structural style - with modern innovations where required.

About 8 years ago, he and his family moved to Mombasa where they set up a home and an office, establishing and working with a well honed multi-cultural team with both local and international track records. The company’s aim is to focus on quality architecture, and to be proud of the finished building. With a ‘green’ aesthetic, their emphasis is on local materials, natural light, open courtyards, private gardens, wind and solar power, and recycled water – ancient traditions meeting contemporary advances.

“I like to create innovative projects that transform plots and properties into vibrant residential or commercial communities; projects that inspire, excite and serve a purpose; high quality, diverse and aesthetically pleasing” says Urko. Their varied assignments cover a large part of Africa, from Somali to northern Mozambique.

“The Swahili culture is extremely rich, it has developed over centuries” says Urko. “I believe buildings should be rooted in the place where they are built, and we aim to June 2014

“Makuti roofs, for example, are not really in the Swahili culture, they are more a coastal development, but with our aim to use local materials where possible, they are an attractive feature of many of our buildings”.

How does Urko see the rules pertaining to building in Kenya? “Regulations are completely outdated,” he states.

“A complete review is needed, from licencing, regulations to controls – and many other things. But he adds, “I think Kenya is advanced compared to many African countries; developments are taking place, and there are always risks in building, it is not easy. But we should not allow development just for its own sake, we need clear directions

A complete review is needed, bearing in mind the number of people now living on the island, and their needs. Filters, biodigesters are required – this is the sort of thing we include in our designs for our factories, schools, clinics designs”.

Among many other awards, Urko Sanchez recently won the International Young Architects in Africa Competition,

by CA’ASI Association (France). This year the office was awarded Best Hospitality and Best Residential Honorable mention by the Architectural Association of Kenya Awards of Excellence.

County, the first of its kind outside Nairobi. The factory, which will be located in Kisian Junction along Kisumu‑ Busia Road, Ojola Sub‑Location,

The structure had a clear span of 41 metres and 138 metres long. The roof consisted of 3-pinned steel arches bearing on reinforced concrete columns. The firm also provided consultancy services for Kwale Cashew Processors Limited in the company’s Cashew processing complex in Kwale, South Coast, Kenya.

Jack Ranguma lauded Crown Paints investments saying, “It is our desire to create, connect and call you to a higher goal of partnership in order to make Kisumu the desired COMESA city of choice for investment, holiday and trade in 10 years.”

Executive Officer Rakesh Rao said, “Kisumu is a regional hub with great infrastructure and proximity to the greater Western and North Rift Regions hence making our project viable. Our business in the region grew by over 30% in 2013.”

Rao further added, “The project will be funded internally and from various Crown Paints subsidiaries.” After the completion, Rao said, the raw materials to manufacture water based paint will be transported from Nairobi to the site for mixing, packaging, storage and dispatch to the market. “This will drastically reduce the Crown Paints operation costs, which will in turn lead to a reduction in the price of water based paints in the and increase service delivery to our customers in the region,” he added.

The CEO hinted that the project will provide over 100 job opportunities to the locals. In addition, as a responsible corporate citizen, Crown Paints has initiated several societal investments to positively impact on the local community starting off with the painting of Ongalo Secondary school and Nyawara Primary School both in Kisumu.

Rao further added, “We shall work with the county government to invest in education through scholarships for bright students from needy families in the region.

From the information gathered from the diagnostic survey, the client can then fully understand the severity and scale of the problem, so as to prescribe the appropriate repair strategy, and accurately budget for the works, adds Mowatt.

Repair Techniques Some of the techniques that can be applied include patch repair that entails partial depth repair and full depth repair. Shutter and cast methods - where formwork is erected prior to casting of specialized grouts and repair products. Shotcrete is an excellent tool for stabilization and support of structures in a very short time and for concrete applications without using any moulds. Over the past years, sprayed concrete has replaced the traditional methods of lining tunnel profiles and has become very important in stabilizing the excavated tunnel section. Shotcrete is more dense, homogeneous, South Africa

strong and waterproof than any other repair processes.

Additional repair techniques include such methods as grouting and crack injection. After deciding on the repair technique to be used, the implementation phase follows.A systematic approach to concrete repair includes identifying, testing, preparing, repairing, protecting as well as cataloging and keeping accurate records as the work proceeds.As part of the quality control procedures - a checklist is drawnup where each phase of the repair is completedand checked before proceeding.

The actual repair involves the removal of all corrosion from the reinforcing steel and the use of premixed concrete repair mortars applied in multiple layers to the level of the adjacent undisturbed concrete. Protection of the repaired structure is crucial, and protective coatings are selected to provide anti-carbonation protection, effective cover, crack bridging properties and a uniform appearance and color.

As the economic climate continues to be harsh, every organization strives to cut cost- and it is here that concrete repair and rehabilitation provides a solution. Instead of building new and expensive infrastructure such as water containment structures, tunnels, bridges and many others, repairing existing infrastructure is the answer. In addition, as the country’s focus is on investing in low cost housing development, there are huge opportunities for restoring concrete infrastructure that has not been receiving regular maintenance. As attention returns to repairing and upgrading of our infrastructure, there is a need for professionally applied, costeffective solutions that will meet rigorous specification criteria for quality and durability.

Improper setup has led to a number of mobile crane accidents, and most common setup mistakes include inability to provide enough cribbing under the outrigger pads to support the crane and the load weight. Knowing how much weight is exerted on the outriggers is crucial in order to maintain the crane in a level condition and ensuring the crane has proper support. In addition, proper cribbing reduces crane pressure, keeping the crane’s tires free of support surface.

Crane operation inspection Cranes require inspections, including daily visual and operational inspections by the operator, a minimum monthly inspection with signed reports by a qualified person, and periodic inspections at minimum, once per year with signed reports by a qualified person.

Measuring the quality of your crane and rigging operation is critical and will give you an insight on how your operation stacks up against others of comparable size in the same industry. The building design includes an office area and several showrooms, which are separated. In the round exhibition hall the City Model of Abu Dhabi is set. We hope you enjoy our new design ideas!

Two parts in one design Despite the separation the buildings are still connected by a bridge, which includes a theatre, a restaurant and a public library.

Another central linking element is the arrival area, where most of the space is roofed and

shaded. That way people are able to enjoy the greened spaces, waterfalls and benches.

Circles After designing the showroom totally round – to really underline the central Capitals Model in the middle of it – designing the whole building was following that idea.

This remarkable form helps, among other things, to provide maximum safety and maximum natural lightning. As a result of the round design there is a very save and zoned courtyard, which also offers a private area for relaxing and refreshing.

Exhibition hall & the City Model When entering the showroom visitors will see the Model right in front of them. It is set

on a lower level so they can look at it from a higher angel and take it all in. When people walk around the Model in this totally round room they will find themselves on a ramp which leads spiral shaped all the way up to the top of the room, offering not only a great outlook at the Model but also secondary showrooms are placed along the ramp.

Typical patterns To include the building complex very naturally into the environment, it is placed on different landscape levels. The use of typical colours and patterns does not only help to fit the complex into the natural landscape, it also refers to the already existing Urban Planning Council building.

The association also provides the credibility guarantee for its members hence enhancing their opportunities to access jobs. The association also disseminates information on the available job opportunities to its members mainly through e-mail.

Local Business Networking The association provides a forum for construction companies to interact and exchange ideas which lead to business development. In order to interact with other leading members of the business community the Association is a member of the Tanzania private Sector Foundation.

Professional representation The Association has representation seats on a number of professional and regulatory beards. It is also represented in a number of committees and tack forces. By having direct access and dialogue with the government authorities, CATA is able to protect and further its member’s interests.

Social Responsibility Function Members are urged as part of corporate governance to give back to the community through activities that directly benefit the community they serve. The Association also coordinates collective social responsibility projects.

International Cooperation CATA is affiliated to the Africa Federation for Construction contractors Associations (AFCCA). It is also the administration host for the Dar es salaam Building Construction cluster initiative under pan African Competitiveness Forum (PACF) which aims at developing the competitiveness of Dar es salaam construction Enterprises (Contractors, Consultants, and Supplies etc) The Association has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the international Contractors Association of Korea which will lead to the cooperation on various fronts for mutual benefit. Through such cooperation the Association is able to market and promote the members services to foreign markets and potential partners.
