To the economist it is all too clear that if Africa is to meet its development agenda infrastructure has to be developed whether it is to move agricultural produce to market faster, develop a nascent industrial and manufacturing base or to become an attractive tourist destination. Machinery is the tool that will get the work done. The evidence of this demand for equipment has not been lost on European, Asian as well as American dealers in used equipment some of whom have gone beyond having mere websites and have in addition become more frequent visitors to the continent as exhibitors at local fairs while setting up local partnerships. Parts and services suppliers have also shadowed this trend along with local dealers of reputable brands who today also offer refurbished equipment that is more affordable than buying new. In this issue we explore the key issues to examine when buying a piece of equipment online or in the yard.

Solar demand in MEA region grows by 50%

Construction of Pemba Port to commence in 2015

Solar PV demand in the Middle

The construction of the Pemba Port Logistical Base, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, is set to start in January 2015 with the first phase of construction budgeted at US$150m. The first phase will include the building of the logistical base and the installations for the production and assembly of the subsea equipment used in the hydrocarbon industry. The new port in the city of Pemba will have a 300 meter dock capable of receiving ships with a maximum draught of 12 meters and a variety of other facilities on a 36-hectare plot. The facility will support the hydrocarbon industry in the Rovuma Basin, where huge amounts of natural gas have been discovered. The logistical base has been sub-leased to the recently formed company ENHILS, which is composed of Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) and the Nigerian company Orlean Invest who have extensive international experience in developing logistical bases to support the hydrocarbon industry. This venture is the first of its kind in Mozambique.

East and Africa (MEA) region is set to grow 50 %year-over-year in 2014. This is according to a NPD Solarbuzz’s Emerging PV Markets Report: Middle East and Africa. The report adds that between 2014 and 2018, annual PV demand will nearly triple as the MEA region becomes a key market for the global industry. By 2018, annual PV demand in the region is expected to reach 4.4 GW, with an upside potential of 10 GW. PV demand from the MEA region in 2013 grew by 670 %, compared to 2012 when the region added approximately 140 MW, the research group points out. Previously, the region had a substantial share of small off-grid PV systems; however, in 2013 the on-grid segment became the main factor driving growth to more than 1 GW, with 1.6 GW forecast for 2014. In 2018, ground-mount systems will account for over 70 percent of the market. So far, PV growth in the MEA region has been predominantly

New Energy Technologies Inc. (NENE), developer of see-through SolarWindowTM coatings, capable of generating electricity on glass and flexible plastics, has announced that its technology has set a new record for generating electricity while remaining see-through with over 50% greater power than prior attempts publicized by others. Using today’s certified power-production data, Company engineers estimate that a SolarWindowTM installation on a fifty (50) story commercial building located in Florida could generate enough electricity to power at least 100 homes while eliminating the equivalent carbon emissions produced by vehicles driving approximately 2,750,000 miles per year. Additional total power production and carbon-offset estimates for skyscraper and tall tower installations are currently being calculated by engineers for public review using today’s validated SolarWindowTM performance results. The Company’s announcement is based on results of independent testing and certification of its SolarWindowTM modules by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Based on this newly validated data from the highperformance modules unveiled on March 26, 2014, New Energy’s review of prevailing published literature and scientific reports confirmed that SolarWindowTM modules outperform publicized devices of comparable architecture, size, and design by over 53% in terms of power production – a major achievement and new record.

Symbion Power ventures into Nigerian electricity transmission Symbion Power, an American electricity generation, transmission and distribution company with operations throughout Africa, has gone into partnership with Jyoti Americas and Iroko Capital Partners to establish the Western Sahara Transmission Company Limited in response to the massive demand for increased power transmission and distribution in Nigeria. Speaking in Lagos, Symbion Deputy Chief Executive Officer, William Olukoya explained that Western Sahara is an indigenous company backed by experienced international players that would be primarily managed and staffed by Nigerians. Given the tremendous demand for power and the rapidly growing Nigerian economy, it was essential that the country create the local capacity to produce such towers and remain competitive in a demanding marketplace. With a shared vision to provide for the country’s huge demand for power supply, both companies are bringing together combined experience of doing business in Africa and other developing countries, together with their knowledge of the entire power delivery value chain which will include design, engineering, tower testing, tower manufacturing and construction

Cost management The role of a quantity surveyor (QS) is evolving from being one that typically only manages budgets and spreadsheets, to a cost manager

I

Mandla Mlangeni is the founder and CEO of Mandla Mlangeni Quantity Surveyors (MMQS) a firm he started 12 years ago.He is a graduate of the University of Pretoria.

A cost manager is not only responsible for managing the budget, but also the level and accuracy of the scope of work 14

t’s well known in the industry that the success and return on investment (ROI) of a construction project is underpinned by three key pillars; quality, time and costs. While each of these pillars may be upheld by different professionals or contractors to a project, they cannot exist independently of each other – for instance, time can cost money, where quality workmanship requires time and money, and yet without a clear scope of quality or the project, neither time nor costs can be sufficiently defined at the start of a project. With this in mind, and as things continue to become more cost and time-sensitive in today’s economy, we are seeing the role of a quantity surveyor (QS) evolve, from being one that typically only manages budgets and spreadsheets, to a cost manager – a person who is able to provides invaluable consultation and cost management services to clients and contractors. In fact, the emerging cost manager is intrinsically involved in defining, managing and cementing all three pillars – quality, time and cost – towards the overall success of a project. “The sky’s the limit” If we first consider quality, for instance, it stands to reason that the more accurate the design, the more effective the cost will be. A cost manager therefore is not only responsible for managing the budget, but also the level and accuracy of the scope of work. To this end, while cost and project management remain two separate professional disciplines, it is essential that the cost manager is involved in the initial client briefings - to ensure that the scope of work is defined correctly from the start – and be able to impartially report on the budget to the client through each phase of a project. Additionally, as the cost manager will manage any and all payments, they are primely positioned to ensure that the project is delivered on time within the conditions of contract, where using the latest available

technology will also guarantee that reporting is in line with what financial departments of the respective stakeholders require. This value added service can free up significant amounts of time for the project manager to be more proactive in anticipating and addressing potential problems in terms of construction. By managing contractual administration keeping all parties in line with the conditions of contract, the cost manager is also able reduce and even mitigate certain risks associated with projects. Counting on the hands of time Once the scope of quality or work has been clearly defined and outlined in a contact, the next biggest challenge on a construction project is managing the client’s expectations – particularly around time to project completion. Often part of this challenge is that clients don’t give the professional team sufficient time to discern clear roles and responsibilities aligned to the scope of the project, delivering on deadline and within budget - and accountability if it doesn’t. When in actual fact having clearly defined roles and responsibilities at the onset of a project - and that each party can hold each other accountable to - can save significant time when there is a clash or dispute that needs to be resolved, for instance. While, a cost manager should always remain impartial where there may be a dispute – whether within the project management team, with labour on a site and/ or a client’s financial manager - a good cost manager should be focused on breaking the ice between the involved parties, without taking sides and with the aim of facilitating faster resolution – ensuring that the budget and project can be kept on track. he used earthmoving equipment market in Africa has become a multi-million dollar business that has attracted not only many secondhand dealers but also online auction houses eager to tap into this fast growing market. Buyers in Africa are not new to the concept of used goods given their already insatiable appetite for used cars from Japan, Europe and Dubai. In the case of used cars several years ago it resulted in the collapse of several new car franchises in Africa which is a testament to how significant this market force is. Used machinery is here to stay and machinery franchise holders have even caught on the game by introducing what they call factory refurbished equipment in order to remain relevant to market expectations. And what are those expectations? Reasonable prices for reasonably good equipment. When buying used equipment five key pointers emerged when we interviewed various global second hand dealers. We highlight them in this article as well who to go to and have peace of mind. Inspection Firstly, just as with new equipment when buying used, a buyer needs to carefully inspect the equipment and enquire on any warranty availability. Inspection is key so check out for any oil leaks and welds on the structure of the machinery both of which can signal a poorly maintained machine or one which was used very roughly to the point of breaking, hence the welds. Heavy smoke June 2014

when the engine is turned on is also a bad indication as is any seized parts and don’t be fooled by a smooth talking salesperson either who may tend to downplay these flaws. Dustin Graves of Hoss Machinery International says that you should ask for service history, oil samples and photos of the machine and if you can know who owned the machine originally that would even be better. If you are going to have to buy over the internet Bob Chafla of RLC Equipment based in California, USA advises that you can opt to appoint a local dealer or franchise holder in the region to inspect the machine on your behalf. This is far cheaper than paying for an air ticket and accommodation costs if you were to do the inspection yourself. Lieven Pauwels of Machinery Resale of Belgium adds that you can even ask for a video clip of the machine to see it in action though hidden problems will not be easily noticed. The way of the herd Secondly, going for equipment that is from the more popular brand names will ensure that parts will be available. You don’t want to get stuck with a brand name no one knows and hope to find spares for it round the corner when it breaks down. The scrap yard is filled with such machines that were purchased unwisely because of the unbeatable price offered and got grounded for lack of parts. Price And that brings us to price. This should not be your only guide when buying a piece of equipment. Low price may result in upfront savings but misery later on with escalating costs due to downtime and repairs. Better to pay a little extra for a reasonable machine than June 2014

rock bottom price for a doubtful machine. German Flores of Worldwide Group who sell and rent machinery puts it well when he says that you only get what you pay for. Simplicity Several dealers of second hand equipment tout the advantages of less electronics and this is with good reason because in Africa technical support may not be sophisticated enough to sort out an electrical fault with a computerized system . Your technical team will love you for choosing the old tried and tested models that are simply to operate and maintain not needing high-end computerized diagnosis when it fails to start up. With time however the old will give way to newer machines and as German of Worldwide Group says tier 4 machines will be in the secondhand market soon and with their more sophisticated electronics and special fuels to meet emissions restrictions in Europe and USA the machines will be pricier. Track record Lastly, nothing beats good referrals. A dealer with many satisfied customers is one to look up. Getting your hands on a second hand grader or earth mover is not hard these days. There are many second hand equipment suppliers and many dealers of the popular machinery brands also offer refurbished machinery. In addition to this the internet has introduced online auctions where one can bid for machinery in real time on websites for auctioneers who pride themselves on selling only quality equipment with referrals and testimonials to boot. Look for reputable firms and you’ll be off to a good start. Acquisitie België Since its foundation in 1990, Acquisitie België has been a reliable worldwide heavy machinery trader and has been active in selling, importing, exporting, renting and transporting heavy machinery. The company deals in used earthmoving equipment, road construction machines, forestry equipment and mining machines and has a large stock of high quality used Caterpillar wheel loaders, excavators, dumpers, graders, bulldozers, etc Acquisitie through its own rental fleets has the base of finding the right machinery for its customers. All the machines are checked, serviced and repainted in the company’s own workshop by qualified staff. The Belgium based company has many years of experience in exporting machines to Africa. They can arrange transport from their yard to almost all ports of Africa. Acquisitie own truck fleet will bring the machines to the Belgian or Dutch port and they have worked also for several years with a reliable shipping agent who arranges transport by RoRo 18

boat to any African port. Rick den Ouden contact person at Acquisitie says that most African countries prefer the old model machinery because they have less electronics and they are easier to use and to maintain. He adds on that as a new trend rather than buying used machinery, African countries can actually buy new LiuGong machines that are new, have less electronics and so they are easy to manage. As the perceived emerging trend, the company has in stock LiuGong machines in its other company ECEM Trading. The company’s website is always up-to-date with its latest set of used machinery for any interested buyer. A look at pump innovations Compiled By: Christine Achieng and Dorcas Kang'ereha nyone in construction can tell you the value of having a top quality reliable pump on your site is critical. This can be for foundation drying and emptying plus Bentonite pumping for deep foundations, general over pumping services, general dewatering plus rewatering (rehydration) mains boosting, mains testing and mains cleaning Sewage by-pass and dust suppression. Whatever the case reliability is paramount in a strict deadline situation. Pumps are used for a variety of purposes and this means that they come in various shapes and sizes from very large to very small each designed to accomplish specific tasks depending on the liquid or slurry to be conveyed, the rate or conveyance, height and rate. In order to wade through the wide range of available pumps it is critical to know what pump fits what job. The following companies focus on different types of pumps used in construction. Recent trends have tended to focus on issues of raising efficiency, lowering cost and providing options in the type of energy used to drive the pumps. In the case of remote and off-grid areas in Africa the pumps being touted are those that do not need fossil fuels or electricity but can be run either by use of solar or manual power. For more robust work in mining and industrial applications emphasis is on resistance to abrasive fluids as well as prevention of clogging. Some companies have come up with innovative solutions to tackle these problems by experimenting with different alloys in the construction of the pump or even by the design of the impeller. Daniel Westin, product manager with Xylem Xylem pumps says, “improvements in dewatering pumps are due primarily to good hydraulic design and smart technologies which increase a pumps wear resistance and efficiency. We have outlined some of these innovative changes in this article.

solving the most challenging water problems. As a global leader in water solutions, with products sold in more than 150 countries., Xylem provides expertise in water pumping applications, and partners with customers around the world to fix complex water issues. Xylem Flygt and Godwin branded pumps are market leading in the removal and transport of water.Xylem’s new Flygt BIBO range of submersible dewatering pumps incorporates several proven design features taken from the original and legendary dewatering pump of the same name, as well as innovative enhancements that give the new pumps unmatched wear resistance and uptime capability. The Flygt 2600 drainage pumps feature Xylem’s patented Dura Spin hydraulic system, Hard-Iron impeller, Plug-In Cartridge seal and are three times more wear-resistant than conventional drainage pumps. Fewer components mean less spare parts to store as well as being one of the easiest products to service on the market. New enhancements to Xylem’s Flygt 2600 range include increased durability of the seal system, greater protection against corrosion, a simplified design and capability for dry running. Daniel Westin, product manager with Xylem, advises potential buyers that, Often their customers’ core business is not pumping, and sometimes they use whatever pump they have at hand, which may be too large or too small, leading to unnecessary cost. Bringing an expert on board at the beginning of the project will ensure that the right system is put in place and that it operates at an optimum level throughout the lifetime of the dewatering task. Westin also commented on emerging product trends, “Advances in pump technology in recent years are more a result of technological developments rather than new materials. Hard iron and stainless steel, both used widely in pump manufacture, have been around for a long time. Improvements in dewatering pumps are due primarily to good hydraulic design and smart technologies which increase a pumps wear resistance and efficiency.” Australian Pump Industries Australian pump commonly known as Aussie Pumps, began trading in 1993 with a clear mission to provide first class water pumps and cleaning equipment to Australian and international consumers. Their products deliver better outcomes for users in terms of reliability, water efficiency, fuel efficiency and product longevity. Urko Sanchez Architects Anyone visiting Urko Sanchez’s beautiful offices in the plush Links Plaza, Nyali, might get a surprise when they find Urko and his staff all barefoot! There is a notice which says it’s an optional choice for visitors, but it is rather refreshing and innovative – which perhaps describes the architect himself as Patricia Scott found out. Kenya

U

rko Sanchez was born and raised in Spain, where he completed his architectural studies – which, he says took him 10 years to complete as they were interspersed with travel, which he loves to do. As part of his studies Urko participated in various architectural projects with NGOs in several countries, working as a volunteer, giving him invaluable experence in many different countries. “I worked in different conflict zones” he recalls, “mostly building camps, schools and clinics. One of my first assignments was on the border of Somalia and Kenya, and I think perhaps that is where my love of East Africa first began.” After some years of experience, Urko decided to

make his base in Kenya and started off living in Lamu, enjoying the peace and tranquility after the high conflict countries he had been working in. He was commissioned to go back to Spain to renovate special up-market projects like the Real Madrid Football Club and the Salamanca Cathedral, before returning to Kenya after a couple of years. He built a hotel on Lamu island and found himself drawn more and more into building in Swahili structural style - with modern innovations where required. About 8 years ago, he and his family moved to Mombasa where they set up a home and an office, establishing and working with a well honed multi-cultural team with both local and international track records. The company’s aim is to focus on quality architecture, and to be proud of the finished building. With a ‘green’ aesthetic, their emphasis is on local materials, natural light, open courtyards, private gardens, wind and solar power, and recycled water – ancient traditions meeting contemporary advances. “I like to create innovative projects that transform plots and properties into vibrant residential or commercial communities; projects that inspire, excite and serve a purpose; high quality, diverse and aesthetically pleasing” says Urko. Their varied assignments cover a large part of Africa, from Somali to northern Mozambique. “The Swahili culture is extremely rich, it has developed over centuries” says Urko. “I believe buildings should be rooted in the place where they are built, and we aim to June 2014

on where the country is heading, what it can or what it should have.” “An example of something that needs attention is the drainage system in Lamu. Years ago, the island was home to only about 700 people. Then they had dry latrines and wells sited near them did not become contaminated. Now flush toilets create ‘black water’ (a term used for toilet waste) which contaminates the water

Kenya

understand the needs of the client and incorporate those with our aesthetics. “Implementation is a complex process” he continues. “Makuti roofs, for example, are not really in the Swahili culture, they are more a coastal development, but with our aim to use local materials where possible, they are an attractive feature of many of our buildings”. How does Urko see the rules pertaining to building in Kenya? “Regulations are completely outdated,” he states. “A complete review is needed, from licencing, regulations to controls – and many other things. But he adds, “I think Kenya is advanced compared to many African countries; developments are taking place, and there are always risks in building, it is not easy. But we should not allow development just for its own sake, we need clear directions

table so there is no drinking water in Lamu town. As well, the open drains in the streets are no longer a healthy option. A complete review is needed, bearing in mind the number of people now living on the island, and their needs. Filters, biodigesters are required – this is the sort of thing we include in our designs for our factories, schools, clinics designs”. Among many other awards, Urko Sanchez recently won the International Young Architects in Africa Competition, by CA’ASI Association (France). This year the office was awarded Best Hospitality and Best Residential Honorable mention by the Architectural Association of Kenya Awards of Excellence.

Having been established in 1975, it has been operational for longer than many other firms in the industry and has been involved in numerous multidisciplinary projects spanning both public and private sectors over the years. The firm has been engaged as a consultant on projects implemented or funded by the Government of Kenya, World Bank, African Development Bank, USAID, EU, other bilateral and multilateral aid agencies, parastatal corporations, local authorities, public companies and private developers. Initially known as Kitololo & Partners, the firm underwent structural changes in 1984 and adopted its current name. Today, Kitololo Consultants, the brainchild of seasoned engineer A.S. Kitololo, is an independent civil and structural engineering company offering professional services to public and private sector clients in project planning, design, management, construction supervision, contract administration and maintenance programming. Due to the constantly evolving nature and complex dynamics of the construction industry, the firm found it necessary to form an arm that would complement its core work of civil and structural engineering. Kitololo Management was therefore set up in 1983 as an in-house specialist subsidiary to deal effectively with all aspects of project management and supervision of construction operations.

Guiding Values Kitololo Consultants understands that a close working relationship with clients is essential in order to understand their needs and offer suitable solutions. The firm constantly endeavours to find new and innovative ways of meeting these needs. In every project, suitably qualified and experienced professionals are assigned to guarantee quality control and timely completion.Kitololo Consultants believes the role of the consultant must extend beyond physical completion of a project. The firm therefore aims at providing responsive service before, during and after each project. Core Competencies Kitololo Consultants has a strong human resources base that is well versed with the following broad areas in which the firm provides services: Project Services The firm undertakes site selection and investigations to advise clients on the suitability of the site for the envisaged project. This is a critical service because not every project can be undertaken at any site. Many developers or project owners mistakenly believe that they can put up any type of structure on any land they purchase. However, factors such as general characteristics of the soils in the work area and environmental considerations are critical. Kitololo Consultants also

provides Project Management services (to ensure work is done to the required standard, within the stipulated budget and time), Project Planning, Feasibility Studies, Cost Estimates and Engineering Control. Project Design Before the commencement of any project, there are several key tasks that engineers insist on performing. These include Topographical Survey which gives detailed information about terrain and surface features. This information is essential for the planning and construction of any major civil engineering, public works or reclamation projects. Kitololo Consultants provide this service in addition to producing Preliminary Design reports, Final Design, Specifications, Measurements and Quantities as well as Tender Documentation at the end of the exercise.

Project Supervision Once a project commences, the most important control is keen supervision. Even the best designed projects will go wrong if the consultants who did the designs fail to check the quality and accuracy of the work being done. Kitololo Consultants stays with the project until its completion, providing vital services along the way such as Site Management, Construction Supervision, Quality Control, Materials Testing, Cost Control, Contract Administration and Maintenance Scheduling. The firm also does the Final Accounting and provides As-built documentation (which typically describes the project as has been built and not what was necessarily planned on paper). Specifically, the following are the civil engineering services offered by Kitololo Consultants: Roads The firm provides the complete package – from initial survey and design to auxiliary services such as Traffic Control Systems. Kitololo Consultants will undertake Preliminary Studies and Route Selection, Topographical and Materials Surveys as well as Alignment and Pavement Design. In addition, the firm has expertise on Storm Water Drainage, Parking Facilities, Bus Terminals and Bridges and Culverts. Water In water projects, Kitololo Consultants provides its expertise in Rural and Urban Masterplans, Intake and Treatment Works, Reservoirs and Elevated Storage Facilities, Pipelines, Distribution Networks and Pumping Stations dams. Other areas the firm handles are Irrigation, River Training Works and Pollution Control. Sewerage Kitololo Consultants can produce Masterplans, design and oversee Sewer Networks, Sewage Treatment and Disposal, Trunk Sewers and Sea Outfalls as well as implement Industrial Sewerage Systems. Structures The firm has experience and expertise on Soil Investigations, Foundations Design, Low and Highrise Structures, Factory Buildings, June 2014

potential costs. In addition to a close quarter visual inspection by an appropriately trained technician a number of instruments are used during the investigation phase, such as cover meter, Schmidt hammer, ground penetrating radar and ultra sound equipment. From the information gathered from the diagnostic survey, the client can then fully understand the severity and scale of the problem, so as to prescribe the appropriate repair strategy, and accurately budget for the works, adds Mowatt. Repair Techniques Some of the techniques that can be applied include patch repair that entails partial depth repair and full depth repair. Shutter and cast methods - where formwork is erected prior to casting of specialized grouts and repair products. Shotcrete is an excellent tool for stabilization and support of structures in a very short time and for concrete applications without using any moulds. Over the past years, sprayed concrete has replaced the traditional methods of lining tunnel profiles and has become very important in stabilizing the excavated tunnel section. Shotcrete is more dense, homogeneous, South Africa

strong and waterproof than any other repair processes. Additional repair techniques include such methods as grouting and crack injection. After deciding on the repair technique to be used, the implementation phase follows.A systematic approach to concrete repair includes identifying, testing, preparing, repairing, protecting as well as cataloging and keeping accurate records as the work proceeds. As part of the quality control procedures - a checklist is drawnup where each phase of the repair is completedand checked before proceeding. The actual repair involves the removal of all corrosion from the reinforcing steel and the use of premixed concrete repair mortars applied in multiple layers to the level of the adjacent undisturbed concrete. Protection of the repaired structure is crucial, and protective coatings are selected to provide anti-carbonation protection, effective cover, crack bridging properties and a uniform appearance and color. As the economic climate continues to be harsh, every organization strives to cut cost- and it is here that concrete repair and rehabilitation provides a solution. Instead of building new and expensive infrastructure such as water containment structures, tunnels, bridges and many others, repairing existing infrastructure is the answer. In addition, as the country’s focus is on investing in low cost housing development, there are huge opportunities for restoring concrete infrastructure that has not been receiving regular maintenance. As attention returns to repairing and upgrading of our infrastructure, there is a need for professionally applied, costeffective solutions that will meet rigorous specification criteria for quality and durability. Cranage and rigging Inspecting your crane and rigging operation is critical.

M

anaging cranage and rigging operations in a manner that eliminates or minimises the risk of fatalities, injuries or incidents applies to any project or site. This entails carrying-out a pre-start check as per manufacturers Operators’Manual to ensure that all mechanical and hydraulic systems are in good working and free from defects, as well as ascertaining whether everything is properly set. Improper setup has led to a number of mobile crane accidents, and most common setup mistakes include inability to provide enough cribbing under the outrigger pads to support the crane and the load weight. Knowing how much weight is exerted on the outriggers is crucial in order to maintain the crane in a level condition and ensuring the crane has proper support. In addition, proper cribbing reduces crane pressure, keeping the crane’s tires free of support surface. South Africa nothing too heavy, nothing too high

Crane operation inspection Cranes require inspections, including daily visual and operational inspections by the operator, a minimum monthly inspection with signed reports by a qualified person, and periodic inspections at minimum, once per year with signed reports by a qualified person. Measuring the quality of your crane and rigging operation is critical and will give you an insight on how your operation stacks up against others of comparable size in the same industry. The findings will point out the areas where you excel as well as those that need attention. The findings will also guide you in securing an internal team to contribute to the improvement process. Operators should be trained for the specific type of crane they operate and be knowledgeable about load charts, the crane’s limitations, and operating requirements. Perhaps the most important aspect in operations is your supplier. A reliable proven supplier is essential if you are to get the proper training and maintenance support. Cranage and Rigging Sarens SA Sarens SA supplies lifting equipment for projects ranging from 1 ton to 3200 tons. In terms of cranage and rigging, the company supplies lifting equipment for projects ranging from 1 ton to 2000 tons. The company owns a fleet of modern cranes that are serviced regularly and maintained beyond statutory requirements. Cranes and specialized “tackle” are also sourced from trusted local and international suppliers when necessary. Currently a 1,250 ton maximum crane lifting capacity is available in South Africa but with access to worldwide equipment, stored at strategic locations, it is possible to mobilize up to 3 200 ton lifting equipment (Crane, Jacking or Gantry) within a month. Where access is restricted, they rig loads weighing in excess of 100 tons into June 2014

BET Architects plc.

B

ET architects plc was established in January 2003 by two architects TesfamariamTeshome and Daniel Alemayehu. The name BET was derived

from the acronym of the key phrase ‘Built Environment Technology’ which defines the company’s future holistic competence and vision. The word BET was also intended to give the Amharic meaning of ‘Building’ as most houses and buildings have the suffix ‘bet’ like ‘Mesria bet’ for office, ‘Temehert bet’ for School, ‘Menoriya bet’ for residential house . Initially established as a Category IV firm, BET started to compete and successfully engage in a multitude of

government and private projects, attracting well qualified professionals in the realm of Architecture, Engineering and Construction management. Over the course of the past 10 years, BET has had the opportunity to be involved in the design of buildings of various categories such as residential, office, mixed use, commercial, hotels, resorts, medical facilities, multi- purpose halls, educational facilities, convention centres, and housing projects. BET has also handled various urban projects, real estate development projects, neighbourhood design, organizing and running workshops and forums related to planning projects, thereby enabling BET to get the required degree of experience to promote it to the ultimate Category I firm. The firm has gained a rich experience in the design and construction management of cost efficient projects due to its extensive involvement in projects launched by the government which includes new universities in different regions, condominium housing in Addis Ababa, and housing for sugar development projects in various regions. Its collaborations with well-established local and expatriate firms, sub-consultants and experienced teams for structural and other service engineering designs, have proved to be successful in providing quality professional services. BET is one of the certified companies in the construction sector for ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System for its consultancy services in the June 2014

Building Core Values The current situation indicates that the construction industry in Ethiopia is showing tremendous progress, the scale of which is unprecedented. However, there are a number of challenges being faced and need to be addressed. To mention some, lack of technical capacity and attitude problems in professionals, lack of management systems in firms, and unethical practices in the industry. The team at BET believe one of the solutions for such challenges is to build a vision led set of core values that would help to reduce and eventually eliminate them. These core values are also the same values that as an organization they adhere to, forming the foundation on which they perform work and conduct themselves. T

he competition entry for the new Urban Planning Council is set in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. We did the design in cooperation with our partners from Al Suweidi Engineering Consultants Bureau. The building design includes an office area and several showrooms, which are separated. In the round exhibition hall the City Model of Abu Dhabi is set. We hope you enjoy our new design ideas! Two parts in one design Despite the separation the buildings are still connected by a bridge, which includes a theatre, a restaurant and a public library. Another central linking element is the arrival area, where most of the space is roofed and

shaded. That way people are able to enjoy the greened spaces, waterfalls and benches. Circles After designing the showroom totally round – to really underline the central Capitals Model in the middle of it – designing the whole building was following that idea. This remarkable form helps, among other things, to provide maximum safety and maximum natural lightning. As a result of the round design there is a very save and zoned courtyard, which also offers a private area for relaxing and refreshing. Exhibition hall & the City Model When entering the showroom visitors will see the Model right in front of them. It is set

on a lower level so they can look at it from a higher angel and take it all in. When people walk around the Model in this totally round room they will find themselves on a ramp which leads spiral shaped all the way up to the top of the room, offering not only a great outlook at the Model but also secondary showrooms are placed along the ramp. Typical patterns To include the building complex very naturally into the environment, it is placed on different landscape levels. The use of typical colours and patterns does not only help to fit the complex into the natural landscape, it also refers to the already existing Urban Planning Council building.

Our architecture is as unique as our clients A building must always engage in a dialogue – with its surroundings and the people who use it. Our architecture is always tailored to the needs of the people who live, work or spend their leisure time in our buildings. We also pay attention to our buildings’ surroundings, and use them as a source of inspiration. Because the brief, site and client are never the same twice over, every project is unique – and so are our solutions. People are always free to question what we are doing We take a structure approach to problems, and solve them creatively. Ideas are only as good as their ability to overcome challenges and meet needs. Even at the preliminary design phase, we use virtual reality tools to visualise projects, so as to respond to you wishes. We are not just designers but project managers too. As our client you can rest assured that we will deliver a solution that is both creative and professionally executed.
