or centuries, people have been fascinated by the culture and achievements of the ancient Egyptian civilization. Along with a legacy of art, science, spirituality and engineering, the ancient Egyptians also left in their wake a global trade in artefacts, many of which have been taken from their native Egypt over the centuries for both private collections and public display. Now, for the first time, Egypt is set to counter that legacy of lost treasures by creating the most comprehensive collection of Egyptian antiquities in a single museum anywhere on the planet. Due to open in 2020, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be the largest archaeological museum anywhere in the world, with more than 100,000 artefacts in its collection. It will also display the full Tutankhamun collection in a single location, with many of the 3,500 pieces on view to the public for the first time. But it’s not only the exhibits within the museum that have caused excitement around the world. Located in Giza, the museum building itself has already become a landmark ’must visit’ attraction. The project was the subject of an architectural competition, which received 1557 entries from 82 countries, with a winning design by Irish architectural practice,

Heneghan Peng, selected for the project. The building’s chamfered triangle shape references the iconic pyramids, while creating a striking, contemporary structure that accommodates a huge, open-plan main hall. Pyramid Aesthetic updated with PostTensioned Folded Plate Roof The museum’s unusual silhouette has been achieved thanks to engineering from the project’s structural engineer, Arup, which relies heavily on the structural capabilities of post-tensioned concrete. The building’s design includes a roof

with a total construction area of 10,000m2 of post-tensioned folded plates, along with posttensioned edge beams and a cantilevered wall. The post-tensioning element of the project was delivered by CCL, the specialist in engineered solutions for structures and CCS's partner in Egypt. The two companies worked together to provide the materials, equipment and expertise required on site. Folded Plate Roof Aesthetically, the folded plate roof continues the chamfered triangle design theme to the roof of the building. Technically, achieving this look involved considerable challenges. The roof structure is composed of posttensioned folded plates with different inclinations and spans varying between 18m and 30m. Arup requested that CSS supply CCL post-tensioning tendons containing 19 strands to provide the significant amount of PT forces required for lateral stability and seismic loads. Other design factors also influenced the design of the post-tensioning, including the removal of some of the lateral beams originally designed into the roof structure, which increased the amount of PT forces required.

Beams The structural design for the Grand Egyptian Museum building also includes six posttensioned beams, with spans ranging from 14m to 38 m, located parallel to the folded plate roof. These beams support the structural loading of the roof and manage the deflections. Each of these beams was constructed with three tendons and installed using the CCL XM60 anchorage system. The building also features a 22m long cantilever wall, which is 8.65 metres deep. This wall performs the role of a deep beam and was designed with six tendons, each incorporating 19 strands, using the CCL XM60 posttensioning system. Once again, the CSS team had to address buildability challenges in the design of the wall at shop drawing stage for the PT installation, due to the narrow 45cm width of this cantilever wall/deep beam.

The relatively slim concrete thickness of the folded plates – just 275mm - and the varying inclinations also created buildability challenges, because it made it difficult to accommodate the live-end and dead-end PT anchors at the intersection of the angled plates. This was addressed at shop drawing stage by the CSS team, who suggested an increase in the thickness

of the concrete cover at the intersection of the folded plates from the upper part of the roof. This solution provided the increased thickness needed for the PT anchors in a location where it will not be visible and was approved by both the engineering team and the client.

Ahmed Zaky, CEO of CSS explains: “The liveend and dead-end PT anchors for the CCL XM60 system require a minimum concrete thickness of 50cm but the wall had been designed to provide a slim, elegant aesthetic, which could have been compromised by increasing the thickness of the concrete for structural reasons.

“To resolve the problem without altering the visual appeal of the wall/beam, we proposed increasing the width gradually over the course of around one meter of its length. This solution ensured the thickness of the concrete was sufficient to accommodate the PT anchors at the relevant points in the structure, without detracting from the slenderness of the architectural design.” Once again, the structural engineer and the client were happy with CSS’s proposal and this was incorporated into the final scheme. Proven Expertise Unlike many of CCL’s projects around the world, the company was not involved in the Grand Egyptian Museum at design stage, but the involvement and expertise of CCL and CSS were critical in developing the buildability of the design and delivering the project on site. Explains Tedy Chakhtoura, COO MENA/ Africa at CCL: “During the tendering phase, the client’s primary concern was identifying a post-tensioning specialist that could complete this element of the project to the highest quality standards. Speed of project delivery and the availability of experienced personnel was also

Consequently, we were able to offer the client the level of quality assurance they required along with local PT experts through our partner in Egypt, CSS.” CSS provided the shop drawings for all the PT works on the Grand Egyptian Museum project and technical support throughout the design

development and construction process. CCL supplied all the strands and anchorages for the programme, according to the design team’s specification, and also worked with CSS on the installation of the PT on site for the folded plates, edge beams and cantilever wall, stressing the tendons using the CCL Multistressing Jack (4000 MG) and CCL Hydraulic Pump (SR5000). Finally, the CSS/CCL team was also responsible for grouting the tendons to complete the PT works. The PT elements of the project have now been completed and the Grand Egyptian Museum is due to open its doors to the public for the first time in 2020.

IMPROVING PUBLIC SECURITY WITH TURNSTILE GATES

ith violence and security threats on a rise all around the world, ensuring safety has become a rising concern. Whether it is about putting robust safeguards in the virtual world or the physical one, an increasing number of people are acknowledging the need for enhanced security measures. When it comes to improving security in public places, you can depend on turnstile gates. Turnstiles can be defined as “a structure of four horizontally revolving arms pivoted atop a post and set in a gateway or opening in a fence to allow the controlled passage of people.” It is a “gate which allows one person to pass at a time. They are capable of syncing with the preinstalled cameras to identify individuals and the time of their entry. This information can be used to block suspicious individuals from entering the building in the future. he volume of the African lubricants market in 2018 amounted to over 2,400,000 tons — this is almost 6% of the world market. The largest markets in Africa are Egypt (about 500,000 tons), South Africa (over 360,000 tons) and Nigeria (over 380,000 tons). Algeria following them consumes less — about 160,000 tons.

It took Gazpromneft-Lubricants Ltd., the lubes and technical fluids business operator of Gazprom Neft, five years to make itself known and introduce its own brands in markets of 18 African countries. “Since 2013, we have sold over 30,000 tons of lubricants to Africa. Our main achievement was access to all the largest and strategically important markets of the continent,” said Ilya Kholodnov, head of the International Marketing at Gazpromneft-Lubricants.

Markets differ not only in terms of volume, but also in the structure of demand. Thus, Nigeria is characterized by a ‘generator economy’: due to insufficient electricity supply, most enterprises and many residential buildings in Nigeria use gasoline or diesel generators. In the past, Nigeria's lubricants market has shown steady growth of about 10 percent each year, but the economic depression in 2016 slowed its development. However, the crisis is over, and experts notice that the country's economy is gradually recovering from the blow. Egypt is the first largest lubricant market on the African continent. The two biggest segments of the lubricants market are Heavy Duty Motor Oils (HDMOs) and industrial oils (the demand in each segment is about 170,000 tons). In South Africa, the largest segment of the lubricants market is in the industrial sector (40%). The consumer lubrication oil segment is growing, but much more slowly. At the same time, South Africa has a strong position in the export of vehicles and spare parts for other African countries, the republic is a key distributor of lubricants for sub-Saharan African countries.

The Government of Kenya is currently implementing elements of its stated Big Four Agenda, of which affordable housing is one of the key pillars. Over the years, housing has remained elusive for many citizens with statistics indicating an annual supply of a paltry 50,000 units against a demand of 200,000 units. It is this glaring gap that the government is keen to close in the short term. The task ahead is gargantuan. At least 500,000 houses are expected to be completed in the next three years. he TOR city in Tema, Ghana is a signature project that is designed to combine retail with a multitude of recreational services and most importantly social services that include healthcare; and a point-of-contact for interaction between the government and citizens The project has been conceptualized and designed by a "Chronosynclastic Infitibulum", An infinite vector of experience in time and has therefore the vocabulary to reinvent itself over time and in sync with events around it. It is a part of the master plan of Tema city, the main port city of Ghana. It aims to work as a 'living room' of the city. Its overall master plan includes housing, retail, recreational and social services with some urban insert projects that are to create nodes of growth in the area. The plan is representative of both the industrial and economical identity of Tema. The TOR City Mall The location of the TOR City Mall in the greater Accra Region fits being an impetus of movement and advancement in the Area. As a flagship venture, this Mall has the potential to be a benchmark of present and future development. This project is developed as a Lifestyle Centre of the City keeping in mind the significance of the project. From centralized open spaces, sky bridges to terrace gardens, this shopping centre truly acts as an entity that is more than the sum of its parts.

The 4 more important elements of the project concept and their manifestations are Ecology: Urban Oasis, People/ Visitors: Retail Armature, Economy: Program Stacking, Context: Climatic and Cultural Response. The mall incorporates elements of urban ecology into the design. The main circulation armature is wrapped around the ecologies forming a range of program around them. As an economically viable project, the

architect has incorporated various disparate programs into the envelope of the mall in a harmonious fashion. This shopping centre is a product of collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments, the design was achieved using 3D parametric modeling and refined through a combination of video and imagery. As a homage to the context, the architects have incorporated various climatic methods like shading screens and passive cool. As a culture response, they incorporated traditional geometries and patterns in the building design. The building has two basements, a large anchor ground floor, with six upper floors, both with central atria that bring natural light into all spaces. The roof is the first of its kind on the continent.

He also looks forward to handling more challenging projects in terms of design and implementation. “The future is absolutely brighter and we believe greater things are coming.” Engineer Manza adds that the current economic situation in Kenya is not favourable for business, noting that the prosperity of engineers is in tandem with the economic growth of the people. But he feels optimistic that with initiatives such as the government’s Big 4 agenda, the outlook is not grim. fter a rigorous adjudication process by a panel, the Durban Christian Centre in Durban, South Africa, emerged the overall winner in the 2019 SAISC 2019 Steel Awards. The award is a fitting end to the project's meticulous planning and execution, says Elphick Proome Architecture, architectural designers of the award-winning structure. The most distinguishing feature of the Durban Christian Centre building is the shape of the dome in the design. Giving context to the design, Jane Long of Elphick Proome Architecture, says the client originally wanted the new DCC to have a domed roof as it had become synonymous with the Jesus Dome. Unfortunately, the domed roof did not provide the acoustic properties the client required and therefore a brief was established which took cognisance of both the required acoustic properties and the landmark dome of DCC. Therefore, an acoustically appropriate auditorium was designed that accommodated the need for a vast open space for the congregation's seating without any vertical structure blocking the view of the stage. “The auditorium roof houses the multitude of services required in a specialised building like this, and therefore an external structure was required to hold up the roof. This gave us an opportunity to incorporate the concept of the rounded dome in the elegant, curved arches that now hold up the roof,” explains Long. Outstanding elements in the design Coming up with architectural design of the DCC as the place of worship was a different kind of a beast of sorts, Long recounts, highlighting outstanding elements that were required. She states that the privilege when designing a

building that represents a multitude of symbolic and meaningful relationships between people and their faith, is the ability to incorporate some of these aspects into the design of the building. “Externally, DCC is enrobed with a delicate veil which reflects a soft raindrop pattern on the lobby and entrance floor. This veil symbolises the importance of water and it's connotation to rebirth and revitalisation within the Christian faith whilst reinforcing the symbolism of the bride which is found in the New Testament.” The use of the simple cross in the concrete curved chapel wall on the eastern elevations allows the congregation to celebrate the symbolic and meditative quality each new morning brings. The incorporation of the baptismal font below the cross highlights the symbolism of rebirth and starting anew. There is a distinct separation and celebration between the vibrant, enlivened auditorium and lobby meeting space and the intimacy of the chapel. DCC is a juxtaposition between an incredibly vibrant community and the meaningfulness found within the intimacy of personal faith. Both internally and externally, finishes, materials and services are raw and stripped down to their true state creating an honest, transparent feel to the building. These concepts are also found frequently with the faith teachings at DCC and therefore echo the sentiments of the community. Safety Bearing in mind that the previous structure had been gutted by a fire accident, safety was a top priority. For this reason, the client has been fastidious about using an experienced

professional team that has made the safety and compliance of the DCC building paramount to its design. The use of steel On why the use of steel not brick and mortar for the design, Long says: “Steel allowed the professional team to explore not only the functionality of steel, but also the unique design opportunities steel affords. It was paramount in creating the vast roof and auditorium space along with the elegant, landmark arches which not only functionally hold up the roof, but celebrate the history of the Jesus Dome.” Precision in construction A top priority during construction was precision in ensuring that the construction was as close as possible to the architectural design.
