Large infrastructure gaps remain a big obstacle to growth, investment and economic diversification in African countries. Statistics from For the African Development Bank (AfDB) show that African countries will need US $130bn to US $170bn per year to sustain the growth of their economies, population; income level and replace ageing infrastructure. At least half of that requirement is currently unfunded. Building roads, railways, ports, and renewable energy power plants can be essential when it comes diversifying economies. Availability of such infrastructure will surely promote private sector activity and industrialisation, ensuring enough jobs are created for the 12 million young people entering Africa’s labour force each year. Furthermore, good infrastructure will lead to a rise in business confidence and draw in investments in other sectors, which will in turn foster innovation and productivity in the continent.

According to the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth would increase by 1.7 percentage points per annum if the region were to close the infrastructure gap in terms of both quantity and quality; relative to the developing world median. This could also make growth in Africa more inclusive, alleviating poverty across the continent.

BEST ALTERNATIVES TO SLATE WORKTOPS FOR KITCHEN INTERIOR
S
late is a durable, attractive, affordable and easy-to-clean surface. However, if you don’t like the look and flat appeal of slate, you can look for other low-maintenance alternatives to slate for your countertops. Slate kitchen worktops are popular for their stellar looks, non-porous surface, and durability. Moreover, their easy-to-clean solid surface requires very less maintenance than granite, concrete or marble. Just like the modern Unistone Belgian Blue composite material, the slate countertop is a versatile product that’s ideal for kitchens, wet bars, bathrooms, and back splashes. Many homeowners consider slate for their kitchen countertops due to its subtle colouration that’s minimal than granite and marble. Slate kitchen worktop can give a uniform look to your cooking area. It also comes in beautiful shades of charcoal, grey, black, brown and pewter, as well as blue, green or red. But certain property owners don’t like slate worktops due to certain downsides. Cons of slate countertops The corners of your beautiful Ceralsio Slate worktop can be very sharp and brittle. Many specialist installers suggest having these corners rounded to avoid injuries or cracks. The slate worktop is also more subdued compared to other
worktop options. If you want your countertop to grab all the attention in your kitchen, you might prefer other alternative to slate. The following are the six best low maintenance alternatives to slate worktops that will help spruce up a kitchen interior Ceramic This solid worktop material is made from inorganic and non-metallic substances like crystalline oxide, carbide or nitride. These materials are sintered and fabricated under high temperature and pressure conditions to create a solid worktop surface like Laminam Seta. It is easy to clean and requires less maintenance compared to slate worktops. It doesn’t need any sealing to protect its surface from heat, stains, scratches or chipping. Laminate A laminate kitchen worktop comes with many benefits. It costs reasonably and comes in various colours and designs. The big plus of this worktop material is its low maintenance requirements. This solid surface material is non-porous and easy to clean, just like a solid Ceralsio Pewter ceramic worktop. The best thing about laminate is that it doesn’t require any refinishing or resealing. Because of its relatively low cost, you can easily replace it without shelling out too much money.
Solid Surface Just like Ceralsio charcoal ceramic, other solid surface worktops are Soapstone and Corian. These countertops ensure worry-free upkeep, as they need only water and clean cloth for cleaning. These low-maintenance worktops are resistant to stains, heat, impact, and scratches. Even if it’s scratched, in the worst-case scenario, you can easily sand the scratch to restore its appearance. Stainless Steel Another amazing counter top material that needs low maintenance is stainless steel. It does not require any refinishing or resealing as well. It is easy to clean with mild cleaning products. These worktops are perfect to install in any styled kitchen or bathroom without worrying about stains of juice, food, cleansers, etc. They are also highly resistant to hot pans, hot pots, and hot hair equipment in the bathroom. Quartz Quartz is an attractive worktop surface for any traditional or modern kitchen space. Quartz is a perfect material for enhancing the appearance and performance of your countertop compared to slate worktops. Unlike natural stones like slate, granite or marble, Neolith Belgian Blue, Caesarstone Piatra Grey or any other type of quartz don’t inherit any porosity-related weaknesses. This means it won’t stain, scratch or chip. This makes the worktop surface easy to maintain and clean. Whether you choose Compaq, Caesarstone or Neolith Basalt Black countertop, all the surfaces are durable and long-lasting installations for kitchen or bathroom spaces. Dekton Dekton worktop is another wonderful alternative to slate kitchen worktops. It is an ultra-compact material that’s designed to imitate natural metamorphic changes in rocks that endure thousands of years within an industrial environment.

Dekton Ananke or any other variant from this range is a revolutionary product with zeroporosity. It is highly resistant to heat, stains, and scratches. If you are looking for a durable and low-maintenance surface for indoor or outdoor applications, Dekton is a good choice, as it’s resistant to UV-rays too. www.constructionreviewonline.com

GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM Largest archaeological museum in the world
F
or centuries, people have been fascinated by the culture and achievements of the ancient Egyptian civilization. Along with a legacy of art, science, spirituality and engineering, the ancient Egyptians also left in their wake a global trade in artefacts, many of which have been taken from their native Egypt over the centuries for both private collections and public display. Now, for the first time, Egypt is set to counter that legacy of lost treasures by creating the most comprehensive collection of Egyptian antiquities in a single museum anywhere on the planet. Due to open in 2020, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be the largest archaeological museum anywhere in the world, with more than 100,000 artefacts in its collection. It will also display the full Tutankhamun collection in a single location, with many of the 3,500 pieces on view to the public for the first time. But it’s not only the exhibits within the museum that have caused excitement around the world. Located in Giza, the museum building itself has already become a landmark ’must visit’ attraction. The project was the subject of an architectural competition, which received 1557 entries from 82 countries, with a winning design by Irish architectural practice,
Heneghan Peng, selected for the project. The building’s chamfered triangle shape references the iconic pyramids, while creating a striking, contemporary structure that accommodates a huge, open-plan main hall. Pyramid Aesthetic updated with PostTensioned Folded Plate Roof The museum’s unusual silhouette has been achieved thanks to engineering from the project’s structural engineer, Arup, which relies heavily on the structural capabilities of post-tensioned concrete. The building’s design includes a roof

with a total construction area of 10,000m2 of post-tensioned folded plates, along with posttensioned edge beams and a cantilevered wall. The post-tensioning element of the project was delivered by CCL, the specialist in engineered solutions for structures and CCS's partner in Egypt. The two companies worked together to provide the materials, equipment and expertise required on site. Folded Plate Roof Aesthetically, the folded plate roof continues the chamfered triangle design theme to the roof of the building. Technically, achieving this look involved considerable challenges. The roof structure is composed of posttensioned folded plates with different inclinations and spans varying between 18m and 30m. Arup requested that CSS supply CCL post-tensioning tendons containing 19 strands to provide the significant amount of PT forces required for lateral stability and seismic loads. Other design factors also influenced the design of the post-tensioning, including the removal of some of the lateral beams originally designed into the roof structure, which increased the amount of PT forces required.
www.constructionreviewonline.com
Beams The structural design for the Grand Egyptian Museum building also includes six posttensioned beams, with spans ranging from 14m to 38 m, located parallel to the folded plate roof. These beams support the structural loading of the roof and manage the deflections. Each of these beams was constructed with three tendons and installed using the CCL XM60 anchorage system. The building also features a 22m long cantilever wall, which is 8.65 metres deep. This wall performs the role of a deep beam and was designed with six tendons, each incorporating 19 strands, using the CCL XM60 posttensioning system. Once again, the CSS team had to address buildability challenges in the design of the wall at shop drawing stage for the PT installation, due to the narrow 45cm width of this cantilever wall/deep beam.
The relatively slim concrete thickness of the folded plates – just 275mm - and the varying inclinations also created buildability challenges, because it made it difficult to accommodate the live-end and dead-end PT anchors at the intersection of the angled plates. This was addressed at shop drawing stage by the CSS team, who suggested an increase in the thickness
of the concrete cover at the intersection of the folded plates from the upper part of the roof. This solution provided the increased thickness needed for the PT anchors in a location where it will not be visible and was approved by both the engineering team and the client.
The 3,800-year-old granite statue of Ramses II takes up its position in the Grand Egyptian Museum.
www.constructionreviewonline.com
Ahmed Zaky, CEO of CSS explains: “The liveend and dead-end PT anchors for the CCL XM60 system require a minimum concrete thickness of 50cm but the wall had been designed to provide a slim, elegant aesthetic, which could have been compromised by increasing the thickness of the concrete for structural reasons.
“To resolve the problem without altering the visual appeal of the wall/beam, we proposed increasing the width gradually over the course of around one meter of its length. This solution ensured the thickness of the concrete was sufficient to accommodate the PT anchors at the relevant points in the structure, without detracting from the slenderness of the architectural design.” Once again, the structural engineer and the client were happy with CSS’s proposal and this was incorporated into the final scheme. Proven Expertise Unlike many of CCL’s projects around the world, the company was not involved in the Grand Egyptian Museum at design stage, but the involvement and expertise of CCL and CSS were critical in developing the buildability of the design and delivering the project on site. Explains Tedy Chakhtoura, COO MENA/ Africa at CCL: “During the tendering phase, the client’s primary concern was identifying a post-tensioning specialist that could complete this element of the project to the highest quality standards. Speed of project delivery and the availability of experienced personnel was also
critical to ensure there was no possibility that the post-tensioning works could cause delays to the wider programme. “CCL’s PT system and expertise has been proven around the world, including a number of showpiece projects in North Africa, and our PT anchorage system holds ETA and UK CARES certification. Consequently, we were able to offer the client the level of quality assurance they required along with local PT experts through our partner in Egypt, CSS.” CSS provided the shop drawings for all the PT works on the Grand Egyptian Museum project and technical support throughout the design
development and construction process. CCL supplied all the strands and anchorages for the programme, according to the design team’s specification, and also worked with CSS on the installation of the PT on site for the folded plates, edge beams and cantilever wall, stressing the tendons using the CCL Multistressing Jack (4000 MG) and CCL Hydraulic Pump (SR5000). Finally, the CSS/CCL team was also responsible for grouting the tendons to complete the PT works. The PT elements of the project have now been completed and the Grand Egyptian Museum is due to open its doors to the public for the first time in 2020.

NATURAL BUILDING MATERIALS
ROLE OF NATURAL MATERIALS IN MODERN CONSTRUCTION
A
s the construction industry continues to be revolutionized with innovative new methods and approaches, one thing that remains consistent is the importance of sustainability and environmentalism. Guided by both a public surge towards ecofriendly practices and a fundamental moral and
ethical obligation to planet Earth in the face of a ‘clear and unequivocal climate emergency’, environmentally conscious construction is only growing in popularity. Today, we examine how and why natural materials will continue to play a pinnacle role in construction for years to come.
Wood Since steel skyscrapers became the paramount symbol of construction capability around the world, it’s easy to believe wood no longer has a place within modern construction methods. However, wood remains an important material for smaller scale projects, offering a more ecological and economical alternative to traditional materials.

the most recycled material in the world What’s more, steel doesn’t experience any downgrading throughout the recycling process, meaning it can be recycled countlessly to still produce an exceptionally high quality of product.
Many metals are derived from Earth's natural elements
Classified into two categories, hardwood and softwood, wood is a surprisingly diverse material. Hardwood is the heavier and denser of the two, utilized in the construction of walls, ceilings and floors, in addition to wood furnishings and interior joinery. Softwoods, on the other hand, are used to reinforce the inner structures to the frame of hardwoods, such as around doors and window frames. But why continue to use wood? Well, wood is the only 100% renewable resource in the manufacturing of building products, as well as the sole naturally recyclable and biodegradable material. Requiring little embodied energy or fossil fuels in production, it generates minimal levels of greenhouse gases and can ultimately reduce your carbon emissions. As a very effective insulator and easily recyclable material, wood is the greenest of building resources and is one that will undoubtedly be used in construction for years to come.
The industry’s increased environmental consciousness can be readily observed in how it utilises steel. The most significant by-product of steel construction, slag, was once seen as waste but is now re purposed by being sold to construction companies to be used in cement. Moreover, industry specialists continue to work towards further reducing dust and carbon dioxide emissions that have already seen a significant decline in recent years. This means steel can continue to be utilised as the incredibly important construction asset it is. From high rise buildings to bridges, steel forms the fundamental structures of many of the world’s greatest construction achievements – and, as it only becomes increasingly more sustainable, it will continue to help the industry prosper. With sustainability and environmentalism becoming an increasingly pressing issue in all leading global industries, natural materials will no doubt continue to play a pivotal role in the world of modern construction. Author bio: Sophie Armstrong is a content creator for granite and quartz worktop specialists Burlington Granite, who provide a full bespoke worktop solution by offering templating, cutting, polishing and fitting, all driven by 25 years of industry experience.
Stone Stone is extracted from the ground in virtually complete form, containing no pollutants and requiring no further harmful manufacturing. Yet, the useful innate qualities of natural stone is what makes it such a popular construction material, being utilised in masonry, paving, flooring and decorative features, to name just a few of its many potential applications. Natural stone is hard-wearing, strong and durable, making it an incredibly sustainable material in many ways. For example, its natural aestheticism makes it a popular choice for kitchen worktops. But aside from its obvious beauty, choosing granite worktops for your kitchen is a financially and environmentally smart move. As a long-lasting material, there’s no need to replace it every few years, reducing both the production of waste and pollution levels from further manufacturing of required materials. The natural aesthetics, sustainability and innate qualities of stone make it an incredibly useful and popular building material that will subsequently continue to be utilised in modern construction. Metal When it comes to thinking green, it’s unlikely that metal is among your top considerations. However, many metals are derived from Earth’s natural elements, with others being manufactured from their natural counterparts – and this makes them (somewhat surprisingly) eco-friendly. Steel, for example, is an alloy made almost entirely of iron – and because of its unique magnetism, is easily extracted from water streams to make it www.constructionreviewonline.com

SECURITY
IMPROVING PUBLIC SECURITY WITH TURNSTILE GATES
W
ith violence and security threats on a rise all around the world, ensuring safety has become a rising concern. Whether it is about putting robust safeguards in the virtual world or the physical one, an increasing number of people are acknowledging the need for enhanced security measures. When it comes to improving security in public places, you can depend on turnstile gates. Turnstiles can be defined as “a structure of four horizontally revolving arms pivoted atop a post and set in a gateway or opening in a fence to allow the controlled passage of people.” It is a “gate which allows one person to pass at a time. It can also be made so as to enforce one-way traffic of people, and in addition, it can restrict passage only to people who insert a coin, a ticket, a pass, or similar.” Installing turnstile gates at entry/exit points in public places stringently enhances access control, thereby improving security and promoting safety. These gates enable establishments such as railway stations, airports, 20
parks, theatres, malls, museums, and offices to secure their premises for years to come. Let’s see how these gates are improving security in public places. 1. Advanced Access Control Even though normal gates enable controlled access of people with physical and/or digital locks, they’re ineffective in controlling the number of people who can enter a premise at a time.
secure premise at a time. These gates are ideal for use at places like stadiums and theatres, where ticketed public events take place. The most important advantage of turnstile gates is they offer advanced access control to avert and detect unauthorized entrants. This is achieved by allowing one-sided traffic with the help of a biometric passes or cards. These passes/cards, in turn, permit only one person to enter at a time.
This may give rise to tailgating, a pervasive security issue where an individual tries to trail illegally behind a person who is authorized to enter a particular building/area. This in happens in most public places. Moreover, a regular gate isn’t equipped to count the numbers of entries or exits. An unauthorized person can easily attempt an entry/exit just as an authorized person enters the premises. Turnstile gates can fix this loophole. They are effective in curbing tailgating by making it impossible for more than one person to enter a
CR | Nov - Dec 2019
www.constructionreviewonline.com
With only one person approved to access the premises at a time, the rate of footfalls decreases, which gives security personnel sufficient time to pinpoint troublemakers and intervene accordingly. 2. Integration with Existing Security Systems Most public office buildings these days already have some form of security system and equipment in place. These are usually in the form of security cameras. Modern turnstile gates can aid and improve security initiatives by easily integrating with the already installed systems in place. They are capable of syncing with the preinstalled cameras to identify individuals and the time of their entry. This information can be used to block suspicious individuals from entering the building in the future. Turnstile gates can also be integrated with existing alarm systems and other security controls to enable and boost fail-safe public safety. 3. Catering to All Security One of the most amazing things about turnstile gates is that they’re embedded with multiple readers that authorize people for entry. In this way, these gates cater to all security needs of the area where they’re installed while easing human workload and saving time as well as costs. For example, in railway stations and airports, gates installed at the entrance can be programmed to strictly permit people to only enter, while gates installed at the exit allow them only to exit. This helps record every single footfall in these areas. Moreover, these gates can be locked at night after hours of operations, leaving these public places safe and secure. 4. Enforcing Payments Where Required Public venues often become hotspots for unmanageable crowds, which is why turnstile gates can be useful here. Places that mandate buying tickets or making a payment for access, such as museums, parks, stadiums, public transport stations, can make good use of these gates to ensure legitimate entry through guaranteed payment enforcement. Turnstile gates will unlock and admit a single person at a time only when they scan and detect a valid, paid-for ticket, rendering the area safe.

LUBRICANTS
AFRICA ON THE LUBRICANTS MAP
T
he volume of the African lubricants market in 2018 amounted to over 2,400,000 tons — this is almost 6% of the world market. The largest markets in Africa are Egypt (about 500,000 tons), South Africa (over 360,000 tons) and Nigeria (over 380,000 tons). Algeria following them consumes less — about 160,000 tons.
It took Gazpromneft-Lubricants Ltd., the lubes and technical fluids business operator of Gazprom Neft, five years to make itself known and introduce its own brands in markets of 18 African countries. “Since 2013, we have sold over 30,000 tons of lubricants to Africa. Our main achievement was access to all the largest and strategically important markets of the continent,” said Ilya Kholodnov, head of the International Marketing at Gazpromneft-Lubricants.
Markets differ not only in terms of volume, but also in the structure of demand. Thus, Nigeria is characterized by a ‘generator economy’: due to insufficient electricity supply, most enterprises and many residential buildings in Nigeria use gasoline or diesel generators. In the past, Nigeria's lubricants market has shown steady growth of about 10 percent each year, but the economic depression in 2016 slowed its development. However, the crisis is over, and experts notice that the country's economy is gradually recovering from the blow. Egypt is the first largest lubricant market on the African continent. The two biggest segments of the lubricants market are Heavy Duty Motor Oils (HDMOs) and industrial oils (the demand in each segment is about 170,000 tons). In South Africa, the largest segment of the lubricants market is in the industrial sector (40%). The consumer lubrication oil segment is growing, but much more slowly. At the same time, South Africa has a strong position in the export of vehicles and spare parts for other African countries, the republic is a key distributor of lubricants for sub-Saharan African countries.

In 2013, Gazpromneft-Lubricants began selling packaged products in Libya and Nigeria. The following year, the company entered the Egyptian market and sold the first batch of products in Ghana. In 2018, the development of exports to Africa moved to a new active stage. In Egypt, the landmark of 4,500 tons of yearly sales was overcome; www.constructionreviewonline.com
Gazpromneft Lubricants
in Libya, Nigeria, South Africa, Mauritania and Senegal, the supply volumes exceeded 3,500 tons. In addition, the company opened markets in countries such as Sudan, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Marketing activities remain the driving force for the business. To provide maximum support to regional distributors and stimulate sales, a special advertising campaign was developed. It took into account the specifics of each of the target African regions. The priorities here were radio advertising, outdoor banners and digital promotion. Special websites in English and Arabic also played the role. Large-scale promotional campaigns to attract end consumers as well as new distributors were launched in Egypt and Libya. In South Africa, the main focus was on B2B segment, sales were promoted through participation in specialized exhibitions, organization of trainings and events for B2B clients. To follow the sport tradition G-Energy brand became the general sponsor of Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town. The drivers test G-Energy premium oils in extreme conditions.
Gazpromneft-Lubricants is gradually squeezing its competitors and searching for new partners. Article is provided by “Siberian oil” magazine.
“We have high expectations from African interests of all lubricants market majors, but we are not afraid of tough competitors,” Roman Zimovets, deputy General Director for foreign assets.
However, one cannot say that the conquest of new markets is going smoothly. “During our work in Africa, we both observed rapid growth in sales, and lost some markets after internal shocks,” emphasized Ilya Kholodnov, “we lost sales several times in countries, where our products were already in steady demand. For example, this was the case in Libya. Having quickly achieved very high sales volumes in 2013, after another internal conflict, we lost access to the market for several years. Then the situation stabilized, and, again, we catch up quickly and showed a new sales record in this country in 2018.” Cooperation with Africa continues. “We have high expectations from African markets. The continent is in the area of interests of all lubricants market majors, but we are not afraid of tough competitors,” says Roman Zimovets, deputy General Director for foreign assets.

PROJECT
HABITAT HEIGHTS – A GAME CHANGER IN AFFORDABLE LUXURY HOUSING
The Government of Kenya is currently implementing elements of its stated Big Four Agenda, of which affordable housing is one of the key pillars. Over the years, housing has remained elusive for many citizens with statistics indicating an annual supply of a paltry 50,000 units against a demand of 200,000 units. It is this glaring gap that the government is keen to close in the short term. The task ahead is gargantuan. At least 500,000 houses are expected to be completed in the next three years. Private developers are already playing a huge role in this regard. One of the most ambitious projects to kick off any time now is the Habitat Heights residential development off Mombasa Road, near Athi River. The massive project, a co-development by Kenyan and Singaporean investors, aims to provide a staggering 8,828 housing units on a 78-acre piece of land. The estimated cost is US $450m and the project is tentatively scheduled to break ground in the first quarter of 2020. Habitat Heights is a mixed-use development consisting of 576 studio apartments, 972 onebedroom, 2,912 two-bedroom, 4,368 threebedroom and 60 retail units totalling 8,828 units within the estate. The estate is divided into seven phases with phase one being the farthest away from Mombasa Road. Phase 1 and phase 7 consist of one block of Lower Ground, Ground plus 18 floors and three blocks of Lower Ground, Upper Ground plus 14 floors. Phases 2 to 6 comprise four blocks of Lower Ground, Upper Ground plus 14 floors in each phase. As an economically viable project, the
architect has incorporated various disparate programs into the envelope of the mall in a harmonious fashion. This shopping centre is a product of collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments, the design was achieved using 3D parametric modeling and refined through a combination of video and imagery. As a homage to the context, the architects have incorporated various climatic methods like shading screens and passive cool. As a culture response, they incorporated traditional geometries and patterns in the building design. The building has two basements, a large anchor ground floor, with six upper floors, both with central atria that bring natural light into all spaces. SAISC 2019 STEEL AWARDS
THE BEST OF THE BEST IN STEEL ENGINEERING
A
fter a rigorous adjudication process by a panel, the Durban Christian Centre in Durban, South Africa, emerged the overall winner in the 2019 SAISC 2019 Steel Awards. The award is a fitting end to the project's meticulous planning and execution, says Elphick Proome Architecture, architectural designers of the award-winning structure. The most distinguishing feature of the Durban Christian Centre building is the shape of the dome in the design. Giving context to the design, Jane Long of Elphick Proome Architecture, says the client originally wanted the new DCC to have a domed roof as it had become synonymous with the Jesus Dome. Unfortunately, the domed roof did not provide the acoustic properties the client required and therefore a brief was established which took cognisance of both the required acoustic properties and the landmark dome of DCC. Therefore, an acoustically appropriate auditorium was designed that accommodated the need for a vast open space for the congregation's seating without any vertical structure blocking the view of the stage. “The auditorium roof houses the multitude of services required in a specialised building like this, and therefore an external structure was required to hold up the roof. This gave us an opportunity to incorporate the concept of the rounded dome in the elegant, curved arches that now hold up the roof,” explains Long. Outstanding elements in the design Coming up with architectural design of the DCC as the place of worship was a different kind of a beast of sorts, Long recounts, highlighting outstanding elements that were required. She states that the privilege when designing a
building that represents a multitude of symbolic and meaningful relationships between people and their faith, is the ability to incorporate some of these aspects into the design of the building. “Externally, DCC is enrobed with a delicate veil which reflects a soft raindrop pattern on the lobby and entrance floor. This veil symbolises the importance of water and it's connotation to rebirth and revitalisation within the Christian faith whilst reinforcing the symbolism of the bride which is found in the New Testament.” The use of the simple cross in the concrete curved chapel wall on the eastern elevations allows the congregation to celebrate the symbolic and meditative quality each new morning brings. The incorporation of the baptismal font below the cross highlights the symbolism of rebirth and starting anew. There is a distinct separation and celebration between the vibrant, enlivened auditorium and lobby meeting space and the intimacy of the chapel. DCC is a juxtaposition between an incredibly vibrant community and the meaningfulness found within the intimacy of personal faith. Both internally and externally, finishes, materials and services are raw and stripped down to their true state creating an honest, transparent feel to the building. These concepts are also found frequently with the faith teachings at DCC and therefore echo the sentiments of the community. Safety Bearing in mind that the previous structure had been gutted by a fire accident, safety was a top priority. For this reason, the client has been fastidious about using an experienced

professional team that has made the safety and compliance of the DCC building paramount to its design. The use of steel On why the use of steel not brick and mortar for the design, Long says: “Steel allowed the professional team to explore not only the functionality of steel, but also the unique design opportunities steel affords. It was paramount in creating the vast roof and auditorium space along with the elegant, landmark arches which not only functionally hold up the roof, but celebrate the history of the Jesus Dome.” Precision in construction A top priority during construction was precision in ensuring that the construction was as close as possible to the architectural design. From the inception of the project was a commitment from the client and professional team to create an exceptional landmark building. Hard work, clear communication and focus has insured the full scope of work has been executed with precision and passion. Proud to be masterpiece

For Elphick Proome Architecture, being associated with an architectural masterpiece, unanimously recognised as the holy grail of steel engineering awards, has been a source of great pride, concludes Long. “It has been a privilege to work with a client and professional team that has facilitated in the realisation of this landmark building and an honour to have been recognised by the steel industry for the ingenuity and innovation for the use of steel in this unique project.
