Building on the success of the 994K, the new Cat® 995 Wheel Loader features up to 19% increased productivity than the previous model with its higher rated payload and 6% increase in hydraulic force with equal hydraulic cycle time. This new loader delivers up to 13% lower hourly fuel consumption and offers up to an additional 8% efficiency gain when operating in Enhanced Eco Mode compared to throttle lock mode. It is also up to 19% more efficient than the 994K in equal comparisons of throttle lock operation.

Elevated comfort and visibility

The redesigned next generation operator environment for the new 995 has 50% more legroom and boasts features that improve operator confidence while reducing fatigue. Its pressurized cab reduces vibration feedback, lowers sound levels and includes automatic temperature control. Providing shift-long comfort, its new electrohydraulic speedsensing steering with force feedback automatically stiffens when traveling at higher speeds and softens as speed decreases to boost operator confidence.

Confidence-boosting technology

Integrated with electronics, the new Cat 995 Wheel Loader offers flexible levels of information and technologies for a smart machine and more informed operator, maximizing the productivity of both. Standard tip up prevention technology avoids unnecessary stress on the drivetrain and structural components by delivering full breakout forces while preventing the back tires from significantly lifting off the ground.

Trimble has consistently advanced its efforts to promote sustainability across its operations. The company received approval for its emissions reduction targets in 2022 from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a coalition of the CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, thereby joining a growing number of companies taking immediate action on climate change. Ethiopia launches the fourth filling of the Grand Renaissance Dam

Ethiopia is preparing to launch the fourth filling of its mega-dam reservoir on the Blue Nile, It was announced recently, despite opposition from its downstream neighbor Egypt.

The massive $4.2 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been at the centre of a regional dispute ever since Ethiopia broke ground on the project in 2011.

Egypt and at times Sudan have repeatedly asked Addis Ababa to stop filling the reservoir.

"The GERD is now approaching its fourth filling. The last three fillings have not affected lower riparian states. Likewise, the rest of the fillings will not be any different," said Demeke Mekonnen, who also serves as foreign minister.

"The project is near completion, withstanding the rhetoric of some actors that seek to monopolise the use of the shared African river," he said, opening a conference on the Nile in Addis Ababa.

The meeting includes a "high-level ministerial round table", with Demeke and his foreign minister counterparts from some Nile Basin nations such as Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Tanzania participating.

But neither Sudan nor Egypt, the two countries located downstream of the Ethiopian dam, are represented.

Khartoum and Cairo have previously cited it as a threat because of their dependence on Nile waters, while Ethiopia deems it essential for its electrification and development.

While Egypt, which depends on the Nile for around 97 percent of its irrigation needs, insists that the dam poses an "existential" threat, Khartoum's position has fluctuated.

Sudan's leader, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane, said in January that Khartoum and Addis Ababa are "aligned and in agreement" over the dam.

Sudan has been ravaged since mid-April by deadly fighting between forces loyal to Al-Burhane and his rival and former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, with more than 2,000 people killed and over two million displaced.

The US$ 500Bn dollar Neom Project

Ambitious, innovative and forward-thinking, NEOM (meaning “new future”) is the flagship project of Vision 2030. The brainchild of His Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, it encompasses Saudi Arabia’s plans to move away from an oil-based economy, reduce the country’s reliance on hydrocarbons and lead the global stage in creating a new model for sustainable living.

The $500 billion business and tourism development and “living laboratory” will be both a vibrant, resident-forward society and a thriving hub for international innovation. Covering some 26,500 square kilometres, NEOM will encompass several key economic sectors and areas such as smart towns and cities, ports, a network of airports (including one of the largest international airports in the world), industrial areas, research centres, sports and entertainment venues and tourist destinations, including the first-ever ski resort in the GCC.

Located on the Red Sea coast in the northwest province of Tabuk, NEOM boasts a unique, central geographic location. An estimated ten percent of the world’s trade already flows through the Red Sea and project leaders estimate that NEOM is a fourhour flight away from 40 percent of the globe. This not only makes it very accessible for tourists (more on that later) but also offers business owners and investors direct access to both international and Saudi markets.

The sheer scope, scale and ambition of the project is awe-inspiring in itself. What really sets NEOM apart is the way in which futuristic plans and advanced technology are being balanced with an obvious commitment to Arabian heritage and hospitality.

NEOM also aims to be a tourist destination as well as a home to people who are looking to experience the unimaginable. It is also working towards the promotion of sustainable living, in turn hoping to achieve a sense of prosperity and growth for the Kingdom as a whole.

Plans are in place to ensure that NEOM will be powered entirely by renewable energy, the city will preserve 95 percent of the natural environment and will pave the way in global water production, efficiency and storage thanks to new desalination technology.

The city will also welcome some of the top mega-projects including NEOM TROJENA, NEOM THE LINE, NEOM Nimbus and NEOM Oxagon.

NEOM THE LINE

THE LINE is one of the major projects in the smart city. The vertical city will be an AI-enabled cognitive city like never before. Stretching across 170 kilometres, the cutting edge science and design aim to enhance the lives of the potential one million future residents by focusing on walkability, livability, health and wellbeing.

The zero-carbon city hopes to redefine the modern ways of living by eliminating roads and cars and instead creating a linear environmentally friendly metropolis made up of interconnected, pedestrianised communities. THE LINE will also provide residents with access to daily amenities including shops, schools, medical facilities, leisure centres, green spaces, all within a five–minute walk radius. Residents will be able to travel by an ultra-high speed, zero-carbon mass transit system with a maximum journey duration of 20-minutes anywhere within THE LINE. NEOM is developing its own high-speed rail link called THE SPINE.

NEOM TROJENA

TROJENA is one of the developments in the smart city aiming to be an iconic world-class destination. The unique mountain destination will be the first-ever skiing resort in the GCC, offering human-centric experiences to residents and visitors through six districts, each mixing virtual architectural and engineering innovations into one.

The regional plan will be located 50 kilometres from the Gulf of Aqaba coast with elevations ranging from 1500 metres to 2600 metres and will cover an area of approximately 60 square kilometres. The year-round outdoor skiing resort is scheduled to be completed sometimes in 2026 and will boast highlights including a man-made freshwater lake and ‘The Vault’ which will be a folded village meshing together technology, entertainment and hospitality and acting as the main gateway to TROJENA. TROJENA will also host the Asian Winter Games 2029 after Saudi Arabia recently won the bid.

NEOM OXAGON

A place for innovators and entrepreneurs, OXAGON will be a city where industries and technology come together with nature. As part of Vision 2030, OXA-

GON will be the largest floating structure in the world with 13 percent of global trade passes through the Suez Canal. The city also aims to host a population of 90,000 residents and create 70,000 jobs by 2030. The 100 percent clean energy city will be a hub of reimagination for work, living and overall sustainability.

NEOM Nimbus

A first in the world, NEOM Nimbus will hopefully be a five-star hot air balloon hotel, taking hotel views to new heights. The idea was brought

about by a group of students from Cornell University. The self-contained hotel room will make stops at 20 sites and upon landing will unfold into a canopy-like eco-hotel. The hotel will run on bio-propane and aims to promote remote and sustainable living, a concept common among all NEOM developments. The carbon fibre pod will have sleeping, dressing and lounging areas with a bathroom foyer, pilot service, an observation deck and potentially a butler.

Phase 2 of Tema Port expansion project roll out

The operator of Tema Port, Meridian Port Services Ltd. (MPS), has announced it will roll out phase two of the Tema Port expansion project in Ghana. The extension project seeks to improve Tema Port’s infrastructure and capacity to fulfil the expanding demands for connectivity and trade. According to the company, construction will be completed by September 2025.

So far, MPS said it has finalised the necessary arrangements to commence phase two. Which calls for large civil works and construction operations. The project will be carried out in partnership with EIFFAGE Génie Civil Marine SA and De Simone Limited. Given their accomplishments in Phase 1 and the pavement work for the 4th Berth of the Tema Port expansion project, EIFFAGE Génie Civil Marine SA and De Simone were chosen for this phase.

Meridian Port Service Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Samara, emphasized his company’s unrelenting commitment to achieving its mission of offering Ghana and West Africa a cutting-edge commer-

cial connection platform.

Mr Samara said, “The creation of a reliable and efficient infrastructure is essential to meeting future demands for trade facilitation. Our assessment is that Tema Port in Ghana is most placed to complete this objective.” He added by saying that MPS is unwavering in its dedication to promoting regional trade expansion. As well as developing a cutting-edge commercial connectivity platform for Ghana and West Africa.

The main goal for Phase 2 of the Tema Port expansion project is to pave a sizable area of 270,000 square meters using 14 million pavement blocks that adhere to the highest industry requirements. Furthermore, this painstaking paving job offers the solidity needed to support huge cranes operating in the area.

The project will also support the operational yard, and increase the terminal’s storage capacity from 80 to 120 hectares. As well as add 16 km of cable conduits and 5.5 km of drainage pipes.

Three Decades of Interior Design: A Journey through Planning Interiors Limited

Interior design encompasses more than mere furniture arrangement and colour selection; it is an art that transforms spaces into harmonious, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environments. Whether it's a cozy home, a stylish office, or a trendy café, interior design plays a crucial role in creating inspiring and uplifting spaces.

In Kenya, the field of interior design emerged as a distinct trade over thirty years ago, and one company that has witnessed this evolution is Planning Interiors Limited (PIL). As PIL celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, it reflects on the remarkable journey and growth of not only the business itself but also the entire interior design industry in Kenya and the region.

Evolution of Interior Design

The role of professional interior designers has become widely recognized in the building industry, unlike in the past when architects provided such services on an ad hoc basis. Over the years, the interior design industry has undergone significant transformations, embracing sustainable and biophilic design concepts, as well as seamlessly integrating technology into homes and office environments.

It’s been an interesting journey”, says Eugene Ngugi, Managing Director. “Interior design as a profession has come a long way not only in Kenya but also in the region. So when we look at 30 years, it’s not just for PIL as a business but the entire industry as well.”

PIL has its beginnings in the early 1990s when the 1987 University of Nairobi Design graduate was working at PLANNING Systems Services, a respected architectural studio. Previously, he had a stint at House of Interiors where he honed his skills in interior design, rising to Chief Designer in the firm.

Back then, interior design was seen as a section of general design and it was common to find the trade bundled together with graphic design, and other design work, as Eugene experienced during his first job placement.

Eugene was hired by PLANNING Systems Services in 1992, a period when architectural firms were beginning to set up Interior Design departments. “At the time, PLANNING Systems Services had recruited some interior designers from the United Kingdom to work on fit-out projects,” he recalls.

“I was very useful to the UK team as I had worked

locally for five years and gained valuable experience in interior aspects including furniture, partitions, local contractor fit-outs, etc.”

Eugene helped grow the Interior Design department at PLANNING Systems Services, getting two other designers and expanding to seven within three years. “It was the right time to set up the department as the firm (PSSL) was now doing a lot of office buildings and would get interior design and fit-out work from tenants,” he says. “It was good business.”

In 1997 when two expatriates in the Interior Design department returned to their home countries, the founding partners at PLANNING, Jim Archer and Trevor Andrews, decided to promote Eugene to head the department rather than hire new expatriates.

Recognizing the immense potential of their independent interior design work and the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest on projects, the partners took a bold step in 1993. They established the Interior Design department as a separate company – Planning Interiors Limited. This move laid the foundation for a future filled with creative freedom, and the ability to collaborate with other architectural firms across the region. Although the Interior Design section operated as a

department within PLANNING, it was nonetheless a registered company - Planning Interiors Limited.

In 2002, the PLANNING Systems Services partners hived off Planning Interiors Limited to Eugene and Fatema (Eugene’s fellow interior designer) to set off on their own. Fatima Essaje helped Eugene as the Design Director.

For about one year, PIL operated from the premises of PLANNING on Lower Kabete Road before finding a home in their current address, Roshanmaer Place on Lenana Road in Nairobi’s Kilimani suburb in 2004. Interestingly, it was while doing interiors for the South African High Commission, then located in the same building, that PIL decided to settle there.

“Getting jobs was relatively easy at the beginning”, says Eugene, an award-winning interior designer. His experience at PLAN-

NING came in handy and fortunately while still there he had begun learning the art of managing a business.

“There were very few interior design firms then. Our main competitors were architectural firms. We would do mostly corporate office work and bank branches.” Practically all the work would come in through word of mouth or referrals rather than competitive bidding’ remembers Eugene. “These days, to get a project, you have to really fight for it.”

PIL started with a team of 11 comprising 7 designers and 4 support staff. The company has a workforce of 18 staff today. But the size has fluctuated over the years depending on the general business environment in the industry. “At one point, we were about 36,” says Eugene.

PIL takes pride in transforming interior spaces for some of the most reputable corporates in the country. Among the projects that stand out are Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) where, in line with the client’s value of inclusivity, PIL created a new office that is homely, vibrant, innovative, diverse, Afrocentric, and sustainable. Other projects include General Electric offices, KCB Head Office and branches, I&M Bank Head Office, Coca-Cola, House of Waine, Wasoko Head Office, Cellulant, and many more.

According to Eugene, most interior design these days is brand-centric. “In the past, I would travel extensively around the world to places like South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States to get exposed to international standards and see how to bring that back home but nowadays when we do a project, we try to express the character of the brand. We also try to promote local flavor in aspects such as art, furniture, etc.”

“We call it glocal, which is an interconnection of global and local aspects. So, a project can be global in terms of technical standards but local through the use of materials available here.”

Eugene reveals that indeed most international companies are keen on the glocal element. “Their office here should not look exactly like what they have in London or New York. They want their local office to say something about Kenya and her people.”

To achieve these exciting results for clients, PIL, like other consultants has to work with contractors. So how does the company ensure that the contractor understands the design and brings out the space exactly as envisaged? “To achieve the desired result, PIL works with qualified contractors whose capabilities have been tried and tested, says Eugene.

“We walk the journey together with our clients to understand their goals, and how best to realize them.” PIL also ensures that our drawings and specifications are as detailed as possible and clear to the contractors. “We also supervise our projects very closely.” He adds that Design & Build projects are more convenient but there are also many cases where clients have their preferred contractors and PIL has to work with them.

Over the last 30 years, there are several important changes that have impacted the interior design sector, says Eugene. “One of the biggest is technology. When we were doing corporate offices in the late 1980s, an office would have basic components such as desks and telephones. Today, we have audio-visual equipment, Internet and data connectivity, security systems and so on. Projects have become much more technical.”

“Another change is in materials”, says Eugene pointing to a laminate table. “Twenty or thirty years ago, we would probably have done it in wood. There is much more variety than we had thirty years ago.” He adds that sustainability has also become enormously important, revealing that some of PIL’s clients have given express instructions to deploy only sustainable materials sourced from specific places.

Having lived through the last 30 years, PIL is not about to slow down. According to Eugene, the company hopes to expand its services in the region, having already worked in Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Uganda. It’s currently pursuing work in Rwanda. And as the firm grows, Eugene is focused on growing leadership capacity within the team with the intention of gradually relinquishing executive management. “I intend to move on to other areas such as design education and business mentorship”, he reveals, adding that although he would still like to occasionally do a project, he is looking at spending some of his time doing fine art, which he has always had a passion for. “I may also get involved in organizations that support the creative industry.”

Reflections as Triad Architects Mark 60 Years

A spiritual pilgrimage to the Kericho Sacred Heart Cathedral can be life-changing. Not only does entering the massive edifice exude the presence of a higher being, but the structure itself is strangely beautiful. The sloped roof, which evokes lovely imagery of Kericho's hills and valleys, brings out the complexity and simplicity of architecture. And it boils down to the brief – an inspiring structure that would create a stimulus for the congregation to “assemble and grow”.

The cathedral bears the signature of Triad Architects. Yet, although the firm has its name inscribed on many buildings, the Kericho Cathedral has a special spot in the heart of Triad. “This was not a big project in terms of costs and magnitude,” says Cecilia Wahinya, Triad Architect Partner. “Rather, it has everything to do with its good design and impact on the community”.

For Triad Architects, which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year, the overriding principle over the past six decades has been a need to leave a lasting ‘impact’ in all its projects. In fact, since its founding by Amyas Connell ad Graham McCullough in September 1963, some traits have remained constant despite the changing face of architecture and the building and construction industry. Integrity, ethics, professionalism and a clearly defined succession plan has ensured Triad continuous to be a leading practice.

Succession, in particular, has been central in making Triad what it is today. Having been established by foreigners, the possibilities of the practice sinking into oblivion would have been high had the founding partners not made a conscious decision to identify well talented and skilled young architects, put them under their wings through training and make them partners at the opportune moment. This savvy decision brought highly-skilled people like Timothy Vaulkhard and Daniel Mutiso, the first African to join Triad straight out of architecture school, to the practice. The trend of sound succession remains sacrosanct at Triad. “To make partner, you just need to be in sync with the firm, do things in the right way,” says Sujesh Patel, Triad’s youngest partner.

Also revered at Triad is the aspect of diversity. While for years the architectural industry had largely been a domain of men, it has now become easier for women to enter the industry and rise to the highest echelons, including the presidency of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK). “It is a good time to be an architect because it has become a lot easier for women. You just need the right attitude,” states Cecilia Wahinya who joined Triad in 2010, adding that having worked abroad, she was lucky to land at Triad, a practice with a clear mentoring and a succession plan.

Adherence to principles, even when it looked irrational like during the 1980s and 90s when Kenya was in a state of prolonged political and socio-economic abyss, has not only entrenched professionalism in Triad but has also ensured the firm remains as one of the most respected architectural practices in Kenya and beyond. “We are well known for integrity and professionalism,” states James Gitoho, the oldest partner who joined Triad in 1981 and became partner in 1988. “These were

foundations that were laid by our founders and have been passed over four generations.”

Triad is a testament that with the right foundation, success is often assured despite the season. Being a practice that is older than Kenya (the country got independence in December 1963), the firm has been there at every step of Kenya’s evolution. Notably, its successes, tribulations and even near collapse have been synonymous with the country’s political and socio-economic transformation. When Kenya nearly fell into the shackles of a coup in 1982, Triad barely had its head afloat. When the country was experiencing an economic boom after the Narc Government came into power in 2002, the firm was swimming in overwhelming projects.

“Architecture is directly related to the pulse of the country and we are proud to still be here,” explains Gitoho. For Triad, the unwavering focus and devotion to ethos has been a shrewd strategic decision that has catapulted the firm to success. In fact, if projects in its fold are the benchmark, Triad has a signature at every defining historical moment. At independence, the firm had its name in Parliament Building. When Kenya was starting to get its bearings right in terms of economic development in the 1970s, a period when the country was ahead of Asian tigers like Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia, Triad’s insignia included Norfolk Hotel representing the growth in tourism and hospitality and the Kenya Planters Coffee Unions (KPCU) building during the coffee boom.

At the height of political and economic upheavals in the 1980s and 90s, Triad kept its flag flying with the Times Towers and Barclays Plaza. “The 80s and 90s were a tough period but what kept us afloat even with the difficulties is that we had established a name,” avers Julius Kibwage, Triad chairman who joined the practice in 1987. He adds that during the time, many firms particularly those started by foreigners ended up folding or relocating to countries with better business environment.

Many others survived on under-hand dealings owing to the fact that corruption was at its peak. This was particularly rampant for government projects. Sadly for firms like Triad, they were largely the only jobs available. Political instability, corruption and the structural adjustment programs had sent foreign investors packing with aid agencies that were funding projects like schools, hospitals and churches also opting to stay away.

Securing the Times Tower project from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) amidst stiff competition, coupled by the fact that various banks were expanding their brick and mortar, footprint gave Triad a survival lifeline. “We refused to participate in deals that were not straight,” explains Kibwage, adding the fact that CBK and some banks wanted to work with a reputable firm with a proven track record saved Triad from demise.

Having survived a tough period unscathed, Triad’s star could only shine when the country took a turn for the best. In fact, even when stiff competition set in with the establishment of many architectural practices, Triad was largely unperturbed. This ir-

respective of the fact that a large number of the proprietors who were opening new practices had passed through its tutelage.

During the economic renaissance of the last two decades, the iconic projects done by the firm are numerous. The Kericho Cathedral, Britam Towers, UAP Towers, Coca Cola headquarters and most recently the ultra-modern GTC Towers fall in this space. The firm has also undertaken several projects across the wider eastern Africa region including the Bank of Kigali headquarters, Uganda Ministry of Finance building among many others.

“Many firms have come into the industry but we remain as the most trusted,” notes Charles Ndung’u, Triad Partner. He adds that while living true to its ethos has been instrumental in the firm’s growth, Triad has also set the pace in the industry in terms of embracing technology and being innovative. Being in an industry where 70 percent of the job entails producing magnificent and iconic designs and 30 percent supervision

of projects, investing technology is critical. This is even more important considering the building and construction industry is making a shift to sustainability and green buildings.

“We have always purposed to use the latest technology and software being used in the industry,” he states.

Already well-grounded in the industry, Triad has in recent years been expanding its scope targeting areas like interior design and master planning. The firm has established Triad Interiors, a subsidiary whose mission is to create impactful spaces through exploration of new ideas, materials and techniques to express clients’ unique cultures and brands.

through creation of sustainable and resilient cities. One of its key projects is the Northlands New Town in Kiambu Town. The proposed development, sitting on some 11,800 acres, consists of various facilities cutting across residential housing, recreational facilities, commercial centers, industrial estates, urban firms, civic building and hotels. Owing to the fact that when fully developed Northlands will house 270,000 residents, getting the master plan correct is vital.

“We need proper planning of our cities to avoid more concrete jungles like we have now,” notes Kibwage. This is more critical owing to the high rate of rural – urban migration. Studies have shown that if the current trend of urbanization continues, over 60 percent of Kenyans will be living in cities and towns by 2050.

The need to develop futuristic cities and sustainable buildings that respond to modern realities, some of which are a direct response to climate change challenges, has prompted Triad to build partnerships with reputable foreign firms. The partnerships have not only helped in enhancing Triad’s capacity and knowledge transfer but have also been fundamental in exposure on how global practices execute projects. On project that brings out the benefits and synergies of partnership is the GTC Towers in which Triad was the local partner of GMP Architects, a global brand.

Looking back over the past six decades, Triad sees the years as a rollercoaster ride. The government and policy makers have also added the spice in terms of commissions and omissions on regulating the architectural industry, meaning the industry still operates under an archaic building

code formulated in the 1960s. “In terms of regulation, the government hasn’t moved fast enough,” observes Ndung’u. He adds that even in matters of existing laws, enforcement continues to be weak. This partially explains why the building and construction industry face challenges including frequent collapsing of buildings.

Having grown from a miniature practice in 1963 to the leading architectural practice in Kenya, Triad is already looking forward to the next 60 years. “Triad will still be here in 2083,” concludes Gitoho. The secret, he adds, will be understanding how to remain relevant. Luckily for Triad, it has the template from the past six decades.

WHEN TO USE BOLTS INSTEAD OF SCREWS

Screws are designed to be self-tapping, but in many cases you may still want to drill a pilot hole. If you drill all your pilot holes at once, this process is a little less time-consuming, since you limit how often you’re changing out your drill bit.

While you can rely on the DIY "hack" of using a nail to drive your pilot hole, a cordless

or corded power drill provides better results. Drills also make the installation — or even removal — of screws easier compared to a handheld screwdriver.

Bolts provide the best holding strength compared to screws and other fasteners. Thanks to their threads, bolts can provide an unparalleled level of holding power. They do require a nut and a washer for their installation. The washer helps to spread the load over a larger surface area, which reduces the wear and tear as well as the loosening of your bolt over time while the nut secures the bolt in place.

Like screws, bolts come in many sizes and types. They’re also usable with several materials ranging from metal and wood to concrete.

Installing a bolt requires a handheld or pneumatic wrench to remove or install it. Compared to screws, bolts can be easier to remove. The benefit of a pneumatic wrench is that it provides much more torque than a handheld tool, which makes your job easier.

Your project is the biggest factor in whether you use screws or bolts. Remember: bolts provide a tremendous amount of holding strength whereas

screws offer a middle-ground for holding power. Light to medium construction projects, like for fencing or framing, are best for screws. Your heavy-duty projects are best for bolts. Bolts are also best when the finished project is meant to be assembled and disassembled easily.

MATERIAL

Whether you’re using sheet metal, wood, concrete or drywall for your DIY undertaking, you want to think about how it applies to bolts vs. screws. Material matters. Materials That Typically Require Screws:

There are some materials that could require either a screw or a bolt assembly for fastening. For example, a 2” x 4” might be best fastened as a stud that is part of the framework for a wall using screws, but for an application like a deck assembly, bolts are likely a better choice. Be sure to consider the load being put on the fastener in combination with the material when choosing between bolts and screws.

COST

Price is always a factor when budgeting a project, especially if you’re going to need a large number of fasteners. While using bolts can be more costly, using the correct fastener will save you money in the long run. If you end up having to do repairs on the project because you used the wrong fastener for the material or application, you aren’t really saving any money by going the cheaper route.

4 Types of Air Compressors: Which is Right for Your Project?

Air compressors are some of the most necessary appliances found at construction sites, as they can be used as a power source for electric tools. There are many different types of air compressors, each with its own unique capabilities and drawbacks.

Air compressors are categorized as either positive displacement or dynamic displacement, based on their internal mechanisms. The four most common types of air compressors are:

1. Rotary Screw Compressors

2. Reciprocating Air Compressors

3. Axial Compressors

4. Centrifugal Compressors

To help you make an informed decision for your project, we’ll cover the key features of each type and explain how each one works below.

Positive Displacement Compressors

Positive displacement compressors encompass a variety of different air compressors that generate power via air displacement. Air compressors in this category work with different internal mechanisms, but the principle for each is the same. A cavity inside the machine stores the air brought from outside, then slowly compresses the cavity to increase the air pressure and potential energy.

Rotary Screw Compressors

A common type of displacement compressor, rotary screws are some of the easiest types of air compressors to take care of, as they are equipped with an internal cooling system that doesn’t require much maintenance. They are typically large industrial-sized machines that can be either lubricated with oil or run oil-free. Rotary screw air compressors generate energy via two internal rotors that turn in opposite directions. The air gets trapped between the two opposing rotors and builds up pressure within the housing. Because of the internal cooling system, these air compressors are designed for continuous use, and range in power from 5 horsepower up to 350 horsepower.

Best For: Large-scale jobs and industrial settings that require continuous airflow

Reciprocating Compressors

Reciprocating compressors are another popular type of displacement compressor. They are typically found at smaller work sites such as garages and home construction projects. Unlike the rotary screw compressor, the reciprocating compressor is not designed for continuous use. A reciprocating air compressor also has more moving parts, which are lubricated with oil for

smoother movement.

Reciprocating compressors work via a piston inside a cylinder, which compresses and displaces the air to build pressure. Reciprocating compressors can come in single- or multi-stage variations, which affects the pressure ranges they can achieve.

When you need more power, the multi-stage compressor is the way to go. While single-stage compressors will get the job done for smaller projects such as woodworking and metalworking, multi-stage compressors provide the power needed for intense construction, such as automobile assembly and maintenance.

Best For: Home and small-scale construction projects

Dynamic Compressors

Dynamic air compressors generate horsepower by bringing in air with rapidly rotating blades and restricting it to create pressure. The kinetic energy is then stored as static within the compressor. Axial and centrifugal compressors are the two most common types of dynamic compressors.

Axial Compressors

Axial air compressors are not typically used in

construction projects. Instead, they are commonly found in high-speed engines on ships and planes. Axial compressors have a high efficiency rate but are much more expensive than other types of air compressors, making them best suited for aerospace applications requiring high horsepower.

Best For: Aerospace applications and high-speed engines for ships

Centrifugal Compressors

Centrifugal air compressors slow and cool incoming air through a diffuser in order to build up potential energy. Because of their multi-phase compression process, centrifugal compressors are able to produce a high amount of energy in a relatively small machine.

These compressors require less maintenance than rotary screw or reciprocating compressors, and some types can produce oil-free air. Because they can reach around 1,000 horsepower, centrifugal compressors are typically used for more demanding construction sites like chemical plants and steel manufacturing centers.

Best For: Large-scale steel and chemical manufacturing plants

How Do I Choose the Right Type of Air Compressor?

In addition to the power-generating mechanisms and energy output levels discussed above, there are several other factors to consider when choosing the air compressor that is best for your job.

Consider Air Quality

In clean manufacturing environments, using oil-powered air compressors can create a problem. Most air compressors rely on oil to lubricate the

inside mechanisms, and the fumes may contaminate the air, resulting in damage to products or manufacturing processes. With an oil-free air compressor, this risk is greatly reduced.

Though oil-free compressors are generally more expensive, they are the only option for facilities that guarantee clean manufacturing. Oil may still be necessary to lubricate the machine, but the inner workings of oilfree compressors contain a different sealing mechanism to ensure that no oil gets into the actual compressor.

In addition to clean air, oil-free compressors often have lower running costs, as parts do not need to be changed as frequently.

Prioritize Energy Efficiency

If you’re working on a long construction project, getting a high-efficiency air compressor can be worth the extra cost in the long run. If you’re looking for an energy-efficient air compressor, consider one of the following options:

•Variable speed: Variable speed-driven (VSD) compressors save energy and money by allowing you to increase or decrease output on demand. In comparison, the motors in fixed-speed compressors are constantly churning at the same rate and require a cool-down period that uses extra energy.

•Natural gas: Natural gas air compressors run on natural gas instead of diesel or electricity. They often operate more efficiently than other options and have better heat recovery capabilities than electric compressors. If efficiency and energy savings are your main goals, a natural gas unit may be a good fit.

Consider Portability Limitations

If you transport your air compressor between sites, a portable unit is a good option. Small, lightweight units can still deliver energy, but in a compact package. Though they won’t be as powerful as larger units, portable compressors can be ideal for smaller construction projects. Certain units can even be plugged into a car’s power adapter to fuel small airbrush painting or tire inflation tools!

Determine the Need for Additional Features

There are a variety of add-ons and additional features you can use with different types of air compressors. For example, couplers or air hose splitters allow you to hook up multiple tools to your air compressor so you don’t have to disconnect when you’re changing tasks. Air compressors with thermal protection add-ons keep track of internal heating and stop motor damage if the machine is overloaded.
