COLLIERVILLE ENJOYS A HOST OF RICHES. OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY WITH A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE. THE DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT BOASTS NATIONAL RECOGNITION. OUR NEIGHBORHOODS REFLECT A SENSE OF FRIENDLINESS AND CIVIC PRIDE. BUSINESS IS BOOMING, AND ENTREPRENEURS CONTINUE TO FIND A HOME IN OUR COMMUNITY.

The willingness of a community to encourage the creative spirit, welcome the dreamers, and strive to build an environment for those who want to grow the future will dictate the look of that community for years to come.

Many years ago a renowned artist suggested that the essence of an artist, or perhaps any creative spirit, was the ability to look at the world and ask, “What if?” I believe the same can be said of business entrepreneurs. They own the curiosity required to look at things in a new way, to take a risk, and to spend the energy and resources to change the shape of a business — large or small. Whether it’s the multi-billion-dollar corporation that started with an unshakeable belief in their products or services or the humblest retailer who took a simple idea and watched it flourish, Collierville does provide that business environment and community to those with that entrepreneurial spirit and dynamic drive.

In this magazine, you’ll meet several of those inspired business people, and chances are good you know countless more. They’re individuals with a

creative spirit, driven by vision and the courage to act. Whether they measure success by doubling the square footage of retail space, expanding their workforce and bringing more jobs to our community, or expanding their markets across the globe, they share that dynamic entrepreneurial spirit and they share a community that welcomes and encourages them.

Take a look inside, and you’ll understand why Collierville continues to prove itself a community that’s building the future while still appreciating the beauty of small-town living.

From the award-winning school system and the solid infrastructure of our town to the aesthetics of the Town Square and parks, Collierville continues to offer a home for entrepreneurs and developing businesses. We welcome them to grow with us.

While I have never considered myself an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word, I understand that many of the same qualities that drive the entrepreneurial spirit motivate any successful businessperson. Any solid business has a foundation built on real relationships with individuals. Such relationships build businesses and offer the lifeblood of continuing success.

Collierville is my home. By providence, my business finds its home in Collierville as well. That’s a blessing, for I cannot imagine a better place to do business. Collierville provides an authentic sense of community, and it’s the connection to a community that drives people to do business locally. The Collierville Chamber of Commerce offers a perfect example of a supportive network of people who care about business.

As you’ll read in this magazine, entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial spirit are alive in Collierville. The men and women represented by these businesses understand the many benefits our town has to offer. Most important, they understand that they are part of a community – a community that welcomes them and hopes for their success. It’s a community of people proud to call Collierville home.

FOLLOWING A STEADY PATH TO SUCCESS

RICHARD COOPER HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD WITH HIS HANDS HIS DAD OFTEN ENLISTED HIS HELP IN FIXING THINGS AT HOME, AND AS AN ADULT THAT SKILL LED HIM TO RENOVATING, WHERE HE LEARNED ABOUT HOME CONSTRUCTION AND LUMBER.

14 MAXIMUS BUILDING SUPPLY

THAT BACKGROUND has been an asset he’s built on as he’s grown his business, Maximus Building Supply. Today, Cooper’s company provides quality building supplies to most of the custom homebuilders in the Mid-South.

Energetic and hard-working, Cooper is passionate about what he does. The company’s core values, proudly displayed around the building, point to words he lives by: Integrity. Service. Faith.

“We see ourselves as an extension of our customers, helping them to manage their jobs and being proactive by offering solutions,” Cooper says. “We are focused on building relationships and delivering value.”

Maximus has 118 employees and four locations in West Tennessee and North Mississippi. Working with business partners Michael Head and Steve Martin, the trio make a dynamic team. More than 80 percent of their clients are area home builders, the remaining 20 percent a mix of multi-family-home builders and renovators.

Cooper learned first-hand about home construction by doing many projects himself. He and his wife would buy a fixer-upper and live in the house for several years as he did the remodeling before selling and starting again.

While I’ve always liked working with my hands,” he says, “I learned I had good vision. I could look at a house that was ugly and see how I could make it more attractive.”

SERVICE LEADS TO SALES

Early in his career Cooper waited on customers for a Firestone in Raleigh, where his hard work and commitment to quality service was soon recognized. At age 21, “I was named the youngest store manager nationally for Firestone.” Although the store had never before made a dime, under his leadership, they began turning a profit.

Later, Cooper decided to pursue his interest in home construction and at 25, went to a lumber yard owner hoping to become a salesman. ‘Come back when

you’ve got some sales experience,’ was the man’s reply. Cooper wisely heeded his advice and got a job selling janitorial supplies. He returned to the lumber yard exactly two years later and the owner, impressed by Cooper’s tenacity, hired him. There he learned how to sell lumber, windows, and doors.

Cooper dreamed of one day opening his own lumber yard, but decided to join Mark Evans, owner of Thrifty Building Supply, a lumber yard Mark’s father, Farrell Evans, started in 1984.

“I started writing down goals and presented a business plan to Evans,” he says.

The owners took note — of both his vision and his can-do spirit. By 2015, Cooper was named managing partner. They further expanded, opening the Door Shop in Olive Branch, Mississippi and a lumber yard in Oxford, Mississippi. Cooper bought the company upon Mark Evans’ retirement in 2021.

MAXIMUS BEGINS

He soon rebranded the business, changing their name from Thrifty to Maximus Building Supply. He chose Maximus, Latin for greatest, because that’s what he strives to be.

“I felt Thrifty no longer reflected our customers or employees as well as the level of service we bring,” says Cooper.

But being in Collierville is a perfect fit, says Cooper. “Collierville’s location is ideal and we love being members of the Chamber. The builders are great in this area and there is a lot of growth in this market.”

He’s made significant improvements to their building on Highway 72, refurbishing the storefront, adding a cedar porch, and paving the parking lot,

bringing the business more curb appeal. The interior received upgrades too, where customers can view the company’s selection of windows and doors.

Cooper notes that almost half of his employees are under the age of 35. “The industry average is 6 percent, so I take pride in that. As long as my employees are competitive and want to win, I can make them into salesmen. You can be successful if you put in the work.”

One innovation Cooper developed is a color-coded computerized building software, Precision Pro, that gives framers specifics about where each piece of lumber goes and a delivery timeline for supplies.

“We went from pad and paper to a computerized color plan layout. Using this, framers know exactly where the pieces go,” says Cooper, saving builders time and money.

When it comes to community involvement, the company supports a number of charitable organizations, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Cooper created a special house wrap the company sells to their customers to help raise funds.

Cooper and his team have big plans for the future, including growing the company beyond Shelby County. He is all about goal-setting, showing a page from his notebook with strike-outs of tasks accomplished this week and what is yet to be done. When you lean on faith, the sky’s the limit.

Maximus Building Supply is expanding in West Tennessee with a location in Brighton, TN later this summer.

WATCHING THINGS GROW has been a part of Boyd’s life since adolescence, as she learned from an aunt that beauty can be a constant in our lives if we just try. “My aunt owned Creative Florists of Memphis and had such a way with flowers,” she says. “She had such beautiful floral displays in her house.” Boyd remembers being 15 when her passion for gardening really blossomed, and that passion continues as her team of designers at A Perfect Bloom offer a customer-driven approach to each floral arrangement.

The business has grown rapidly since moving from its original warehouse location in Olive Branch to Germantown in 2016 for a brief period and then to Collierville a few short years ago. As Boyd balanced her professional duties between her First Choice Community Services, an at-home non-medical healthcare service for seniors, which she still owns and operates, and A Perfect Bloom, this entrepreneur moves confidently through both worlds. Since moving A Perfect Bloom to Collierville, Boyd has seen her business require an increase for retail and design space at their Highway 72 E. location. But even with that limited space, her business continues to expand, and she finds Collierville a great location. “I’ve been a resident of Collierville for 18 years now, and I love this community.” The feeling seems to be mutual.

Tiffany Boyd prides herself on A Perfect Bloom’s individualized and unique approach to floral arrangements and the ability to respond to customers’ specific requests. Customers watching her team of floral designers at work can sense the pride they take in each arrangement.

“We are unique. We are not a typical wire-service design shop. We invite our customers to create their own designs,” Boyd notes. Anyone lacking creativity

or in need of that special bouquet or arrangement in a hurry can scroll through A Perfect Bloom’s website. The catalog of floral arrangements will leave anyone wondering just how many special occasions they can fit into life to take advantage of the amazing arrays of flowers on display.

From their inspired arrangements designed for funeral sprays to their gallery of wedding flower ideas, and other services, their enticing catalog of offerings provides a floral arrangement for every taste. Boyd also offers a host of other services, including Wine and Design Classes and Bloom Parties, where A Perfect Bloom team member guides participants through basic floral design, all in their new event space. And while on their website, customers can check out their catalog of gift items, including everything from floral and gift baskets to a host of other special items.

Boyd knows that she has connected with those childhood days of watching her aunt create magic with flowers. She smiles when she wonders just how this journey could have developed into such an amazing success story. “I am pinching myself,” she says. “What started as a hobby has become a whole new enterprise.”

While so much of her business comes from specialty floral arrangements, she welcomes the new path created with her expanded retail location of a gift shop + floral displays on North Main in the historic Town Square. Perhaps inspiration came from the same source as the floral world. Boyd recalls her aunt’s artistic touch extending into her home as well as her garden. “She always made everything so pretty with the décor of her home,” she says. The gift shop hopes to offer Collierville shoppers some of that same décor excellence that Boyd remembers.

She sounds happy and appreciative when she says, “The Town of Collierville and the other businesses have been so welcoming to me. I had no idea Collierville would support me the way they have.” She has so many ideas and she’s proven she has the energy, but she knows the reality of new ideas and business growth. Right now, A Perfect Bloom operates with five employees and “depending on how it goes,” the number of employees could expand. There’s no doubt the entrepreneur has enough ideas to keep an army busy, with the new gift shop and the idea of an event center whispering in her ear.

As Boyd takes a moment to examine the rapid growth of A Perfect Bloom in just a few short years, she must harken to those days of adolescence when she dropped her hands into the soil and began to share the same pleasure her aunt enjoyed — watching beauty emerge from the soil. She may have come a long way from those early experiences, but, no doubt, the memories of watching her aunt create a beautiful arrangement remain. Now Boyd gets to experience the joy of knowing that A Perfect Bloom’s floral arrangements bring a similar joy to so many others.

MOVING THE NATION’S FREIGHT

IMC FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN

MARK GEORGE LIVES BY A SIMPLE MOTTO: SERVICE IS KING HE LEARNED TO APPRECIATE THAT ADAGE YEARS AGO WHEN HE WAS MAKING SALES CALLS AND DRIVING A SINGLE TRUCK OPERATING FREIGHT. IT WAS A CHALLENGING TIME. BUT HE WAS A BUDDING ENTREPRENEUR, A KID CHASING A DREAM THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY TAKE HIM FURTHER THAN HE EVER IMAGINED.

27 THE Entrepreneurial Spirits OF COLLIERVILLE

TODAY, IMC is an integral part of the national supply chain and George heads the largest marine drayage company in the U.S. IMC recently opened their new headquarters in Schilling Farms.

George was just 20 years old in 1982 when he launched his company, Intermodal Cartage Company, with his wife, Melinda. In the early ’80s, the shipping industry was becoming more standardized, a move that would lead to an explosive era of growth. Timing is everything in business and George’s responsiveness to industry demands enabled him to capitalize on that growth.

“I excelled at solving shipping problems and delivering good service to my customers,” he says.

So what is drayage? It’s the transportation of shipping containers by truck to its final destination. Marine drayage refers to the transportation of marine containers, from the sea or rail where the product remains in the marine container until it reaches its final destination. Those are terms IMC is working hard to help the public better understand, since 90 percent of consumer goods used every day — from cell phones and cars to coffee and clothes — arrive in containers from overseas.

Steel containers are carried by huge cargo ships and once in port, those containers must move by trucks and trains. With marine drayage, the product stays in the container until its delivered to the customer vs. domestic drayage where the product is unloaded and moved into a 53”ft van and moved inland.

An estimated 30 million marine containers move in and out of the U.S. on an annual basis, according to IMC’s website. Mankind has always transported trade goods, going back to the ancient Greeks. Prior to the creation of steel containers in the 1950s, the process

of loading and unloading goods was labor-intensive. Crates, boxes, and barrels, usually made of wood, varied in size and had to be carefully stacked and stabilized for long voyages. Making efficient use of space was key. And once a ship’s cargo arrived at port, those goods had to be repacked for transfer by road and rail.

By contrast, today’s standard container size is 40 feet long, eight feet wide, and nine feet tall, and crafted of steel or some material far sturdier than wood. A key advantage is that all containers fit together like Lego blocks, which makes the loading process far easier and more profitable.

In fact, the streamlining of the shipping industry, “helped facilitate companies like Walmart to manufacture goods in Asia because moving it became more efficient,” says George. “Containerization made the supply chain more cost efficient and cost effective.”

Moving freight requires trouble-shooting skills to ensure customers receive the goods they’re expecting — on time, every time. “We were innovative and embraced opportunity,” says George. “When ships would arrive at port and terminals it all came down to how quickly cargo could be moved. We developed technology to trace, track and process cargo quicker than our competitors.”

EXPANDING BEYOND THE MID-SOUTH

Over the next two decades, George built a fleet of drivers and trucks and “opened a second service center in Nashville and then expanded to Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Birmingham, Jacksonville, Savannah, and Atlanta,” he says, with IMC eventually becoming the largest marine drayage company in the Southeast.

The company expanded its container yard in Memphis and moved their corporate office to the Lenox Building in East Memphis.

The company continued to expand organically and also began strategically acquiring other companies until the company had established locations in or near all of the major U.S. ports and railroads, effectively creating a national network with local, on-the-ground expertise.

When George unveiled the company’s spacious new headquarters at Schilling Farms last year, it coincided with their 40th anniversary, and was a fitting reflection of his impressive accomplishments. The ribboncutting ceremony on April 27, 2022, was attended by state and local officials including Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner, and Collierville Chamber of Commerce President Mark Heuberger. Those leaders saluted IMC’s dynamic contribution to commerce in the Mid-South. Mayor Joyner specifically

pointed to IMC’s $24 million capital investment in the town and the addition of 300 jobs.

“The town stands ready and fully supportive of your growth and your continued success and your continued investment in our community,” Joyner was quoted as saying in The Commercial Appeal. At the ceremony, George announced another major milestone: IMC reached $1.4 billion in sales and is now the second fastest-growing trucking company in the U.S.

So, what brought IMC to Collierville? The decision to build here was a strategic one, aided by town leaders who actively campaigned for their business. “We felt like moving east was more beneficial for our employees, since many live here. We also liked Boyle Investment Company and the business park they’ve developed,” says George. “The walkability enhances the work experience for employees.” IMC is the first business in the Schilling Farms Water Tower District.

31 THE Entrepreneurial Spirits OF COLLIERVILLE

In addition to building IMC’s headquarters, George purchased another property contiguous to their new building with an eye to expansion. With 400 employees and 75,000 square feet of space, George says they’ve already maxed out the new building.

The sleek, three-story building has an open, airy feel. From the central staircase, a handsome focal point, meeting spaces are clearly visible through glass walls, giving employees from different departments opportunities to engage.

COMING OF AGE

Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, George grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. His grandfather managed tobacco warehouses and his father oversaw a chain of refrigerated trucks. But rather than work alongside family, his father insisted Mark find his own path. Wanting to make his father proud, George completed an associate’s degree at Columbia State Community College, then moved with his high school sweetheart, Melinda, to Memphis.

But he found himself feeling restless at college. He remembers sitting in an economics class at Memphis State, “thinking about how many loads I would have

to move to pay my bills,” George says. Like many entrepreneurs, the hunger to achieve propelled him, “but I remember feeling frustrated at age 21, 22, that I wasn’t achieving success fast enough. I told my father as much,” and his advice was simple: “‘You just build a little at a time and you’ll be amazed over time at how much you’ve achieved.’ My dad’s belief was if you tried to accomplish too much too quickly, it could go that quickly, too.”

During the second half of his career, George began moving away from the company’s day-to-day operations, focusing instead on mapping out their future. During a retreat with his leadership team, George unveiled an audacious plan.

“Twenty years ago, we set a goal while on a hike atop Mount Magazine [Arkansas’ highest peak]. I announced a billion-dollar plan. I said we would reach a billion dollars in sales and here’s how we would do it.” George envisioned half of the company’s growth developing organically from sales, the other half from acquisitions. Since he started his company at such a young age, many of his competitors were older and as business owners decided to sell, IMC was ready. With those acquisitions, the company steadily developed a business presence in every port in the U.S. Ultimately, IMC reached that billion-dollar mark three years ahead of schedule.

“Drayage is a competitive business and the profit margins are sometimes small. I’ve spent most of my career sitting at the edge of my seat, says George. “Even 41 years in, I’m still afraid of failure.” But today, with a billion dollar in sales and a robustly growing company, George continues to think about the future. “I never dreamed I’d go as far with this business as it has gone.”

In 2022, the Town of Collierville received the Shelby County Board of Commissioners Community Enhancement Grant for $21,250 to further develop the Depot Visitors Center as a welcome center and engaging community resource. Funds allowed for improved historical interpretation of the historic Depot with museum quality exhibits and visitor services enhancements.

The iconic red telephone booth on Town Square, purchased in the mid-1990s, also received an update. Visitors can now step inside the famous phone booth on Town Square for a selfie or photo with friends. Make sure to use the hashtag #ColliervilleCalling, so we can see who’s on the line!

The Town of Collierville is currently in the design phase of a $2 million investment in Hinton Park (10524 E. Holmes Road), made possible by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, that will help make this location a vibrant destination for live music events and recreation. Projected to open in the summer of 2024, visitors will find a handicapaccessible playground and a permanent amphitheater, among other new features.

A GREAT DESTINATION WITH GREAT VIEWS

Collierville is a favorite location for Memphis-area photographers for everything from quinceañeras and weddings to graduation photos and holiday cards. For residents and guests, the murals on Town Square and historic attractions provide a unique opportunity to engage in the space and history of the community. In addition to building community, murals and unique

backdrops serve an important role in driving tourism. It’s hard to deny social media’s profound effect on travel. Industry studies report that between 40 to 60 percent of travelers choose their destination based on what they see on Instagram. Travelers now look for the most Instagrammable picture to share on social media and remember their experience. Collierville boasts numerous locations to get the perfect shot to remember your trip.

SIGNS OF SUCCESS

SHE’S A DREAMER. SHE’S A DOER. SHE’S A RISK-TAKER. SHE’S CURIOUS. SHE’S ALWAYS LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD. YEP, ALL THE SIGNS ARE THERE . MAUREEN YARBOROUGH IS A PROVEN ENTREPRENEUR AND A VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE.

SHE’S RIGHTFULLY PROUD of what she and her team have accomplished. Just ask subtly, and she’s ready to show you the shop, from design to manufacturing to marketing. No secrets here, just a determination to provide cutting-edge creativity for signs that do the job.

The Sign Matters, Inc. story started in 2005, but Maureen Yarborough suggests that she was not born an entrepreneur. She sort of fell into it or perhaps discovered it by providential mistake. “I loved working for other people,” she admits. From early years as a teacher and seven years in chemical sales, Yarborough proved herself through hard work. “I put my head down and got to work,” she remembers.

As a salesperson, she knew how to prospect for leads, and even remembers one employer telling her she was the best prospector he had. Finding new customers and then developing strong working relationships with clients would prove a winning scenario. It wouldn’t be long before she was using it for her own company.

Leaving chemical sales, Yarborough began her foray into signage, working for a local sign company, but soon discerned that she could do a better job on her own. So, with a card table, a list of potential clients, and a stack of postcards, Yarborough reached out. She developed a handful of clients, and she was off to a new adventure, both scary and exciting.

43
THE Entrepreneurial Spirits OF COLLIERVILLE SIGN MATTERS

Admittedly, those early days were hectic, but that same work ethic she used for others came to her aid. “I brokered just about everything we did as far as production,” she says, but her network was extensive, and the company grew. “I purchased equipment as I went along and responded to the business environment.”

Some memories offer laughs: “I remember we used my children’s little wagon to help us with those first loads of signs.” It was a family affair. Those early days are long gone now, and within 17 years, Signs Matter has created a company with a showroom and state-of-the-art production facility on Distribution Parkway, going from a one-woman business — or one family, perhaps — to a company with a full design and production team and a portfolio to be proud of. Sign Matters products find space in countless government buildings, organizations, and schools throughout Collierville, Memphis, and the Mid-South.

These days the company’s capabilities range from designing and manufacturing to installation and phase management of signage projects. As business has grown over the years, so has their manufacturing division, including CNC (computer numerical control) routers, paint systems, vinyl plotters, and laser and digital printers.

Glancing at samples and photos of her signs and installations, it’s obvious why she takes such pride in her team’s accomplishments. “Every building has a personality,” she adds. So much of that personality

reflects Sign Matters’ dedication to crisp, bold design. She knew it in her chemical sales days, and she knows it now — solid business development is about relationships, and Yarborough explains that much of her work is done in collaboration with architects, designers, and contractors.

A local showcase of Sign Matters’ work is at Collierville High School. From the distinctive exterior signage, including one fierce dragon, to signage in hallways and just about every corner, examples of Sign Matters’ work are plentiful. Another prime example of their cutting-edge signage was accomplished for Shorb Tower at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Parking areas, wall murals, window signs, and interior signage of all kinds comprise the portfolio of the company.

The names of the firms and companies Yarborough has worked for (and with) are a who’s who of local business: Fleming Architects, Medtronic, OrthoOne, Financial Federal, Youth Villages, the Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Fire Department and the Fire Museum, Briarcrest Christian School, Shelby Farms, and so many more. A quick glance at their gallery on their website flows with examples of their work. Yarborough is particularly proud of the signage they’ve provided for the new Lake District area.

For Sign Matters, Inc., excellence is not determined by the size of the project or the name of the client. They approach each project with a passion for excellence. “We truly believe in making a difference by being creative and providing quality in everything

44 SIGN MATTERS

we do,” Yarborough says. The company is known for their work involving ADA (American with Disabilities Act) signage in buildings across the community.

These days Yarborough has relinquished some of her management chores and focuses her time on unique approaches to interior signage, designed to provide customers with greater choices in color, background patterns, and design. Her focus is always customer centered.

That entrepreneurial spirit shines through when Yarborough talks of new possibilities, new markets, and new business relationships to be built. She knows that technological and manufacturing advances require change, but also knows that the essence of building and keeping a solid business is about relationships with customers. And that’s a sign of smart business.

IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE

TAKE JIMMY SAWYERS, chairman of Sawyers & Jacobs, LLC. Like many young fellows Sawyers loved baseball, so no doubt he dreamed of glory on the field or, in Sawyers’ case, he imagined a career as a baseball coach. He Also Loved writing and journalism, and imagined writing about sports. Two dreams: writing and coaching. Funny how things turned out.

No, Sawyers didn’t find himself in a career coaching baseball, nor did he pound a keyboard detailing the exploits of some athletic superstar. But coaching? Sure. “Consulting is coaching,” Sawyers concedes. As for the writing, Sawyers now has several books to his name.

The journey began as a high-schooler working at a men’s store in his West Tennessee hometown. The businessmen of the town seemed to take a liking to the personable young man. The bank was installing an in-house computer system, and they needed some help. Who better than that nice young Sawyers? He soon found himself coming in at 4 p.m. for the overnight shift — sorting, checking, posting, and backing up the computer system. Community Banking 101, at night, at a very young age, and he was learning.

The transition into a full-time job came after a brief interlude at a trucking company, when Sawyer’s request for a full-time job at the bank never materialized. It didn’t take long for the bank to realize the error of their ways and Sawyers had himself a full-time position with more responsibility. At 21, he was chosen to lead the bank’s technology division, becoming one of the youngest officers in the history of the bank. To top matters off, the bank was willing to invest in the young man and offered to pay for his education.

SAWYERS & JACOBS, LLC

Fast forward to working while in school and completing his degree at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. Sawyers joined Reynolds, Bone, and Griesbeck, a respected Memphis CPA and consulting firm, where he would work for 14 years with growing responsibility. For the last seven years of his tenure, he was director of consulting. His future had been laid out.

It wasn’t the Steve Jobs story of guys in a garage, but it came close. Sawyers and Joshua Jacobs, president of Sawyers & Jacobs LLC, who had extensive knowledge of the technical side of business development and cybersecurity and had worked alongside Sawyers at the CPA firm, founded the company in 2009. “We started the firm at my home on Costco tables and chairs,” he says. With two officers and a lot of energy, Sawyers and Jacobs, LLC was up and running. Most importantly, they had 20 clients from their very first day. “We were into positive cash flow four months into business.”

Sawyers and Jacobs, LLC, with offices in Collierville and St. Louis, offers consulting services to community banks in 30 states with a majority of them in the South and the Midwest. Similar to their early days, the company continues to focus on those community-based financial institutions with assets under $10 billion and those institutions that “make people’s dreams come true,” according to Sawyers. “We need community banks,” he adds. “They combine the human with the machine and can do anything the big banks do.” After all, he notes, “Banking is a relationship business.”

A quick glance at the Sawyers & Jacobs website reflects the extensive catalog of services they provide their clients, and while cybersecurity still forms a core of their business, the four major divisions of the company,

each with a distinctive logo, reach across the spectrum of community banking needs: REDTORCH Consulting; REDTAIL Risk Management; REDWOLF Cybersecurity, and REDCAPE Tech Support. While the extent of their banking know-how and consulting abilities is daunting, Sawyers is quick to point out that they “stick to what we do well.” That’s developing relationships because Sawyers knows “people do business with people and not the name on the masthead.”

When it comes to that dream of coaching, Sawyers finds himself “coaching” young college minds as a faculty member of the Barret Graduate School of Banking at Christian Brothers University, the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University, the Southeastern School of Banking at Belmont University, the Virginia Bankers School of Management at the University of Virginia, and the Mississippi School of Banking at the University of Mississippi. STAGING DREAMS

IF YOU’VE EVER HUNG AROUND A CROWD OF THEATER PEOPLE, YOU’VE EXPERIENCED THAT DYNAMIC COMBINATION OF CREATIVITY AND ENERGY. THEY SPARKLE, THEY DANCE, THEY EMOTE. THEY EXUDE ENERGY. THEY CAN BE QUITE SCARY TO THE MERE MORTALS IN THE CROWD

ENTER JENNIFER DOUGLAS. Douglas is now in her fourth year as executive director of New Day Children’s Theatre and serves as a perfect example of the kind of dynamo necessary for the operation of any theater, particularly a community-based children’s theater.

Douglas admits that she came from “humble beginnings,” and if not for the opportunities offered by the Lucille Ewing Children’s Theater of Memphis, she might not have ever found her passion for dancing and the path that would lead her to the Memphis Ballet Youth program. “That theater offered me the only chance I would have had to be involved,” she says. She understands the stage dreams of an eight-year-old.

Dance and theater would take a side step as Douglas went from college to career. For ten years, she served as a critical care nurse, and it was there that she developed a deep understanding of what it means to really care. “I learned so much about life,” she remembers.

Douglas would need to draw from a deep well of talents and experience if she were to handle the directorship of New Day when she took the reins in 2020. “I had never written a grant,” she says. “I had never created programs.”

50
NEW DAY CHILDREN’S THEATRE

But she loved New Day, and she had been an active parent and volunteer since 2007 when the first of her three sons began a trek onto the stage. Additionally, she was heavily involved behind the scenes with productions and coordinating fundraising events.

New Day Children’s Theater was founded in 2006 by Leanne Chasteen, who saw the theater grow from borrowed space at a local church into a multi-room facility housed at Carriage Crossing. But Covid took center stage in early 2020. The theatre struggled. And struggled. Finally, Covid took its exit. New Day saw new light. These days, Douglas finds great assistance from another long-time volunteer, Jamie Baccus, who serves as CFO.

Now, the energy is evident, not only by the list of classes and performances, but by the shine in Jennifer Douglas’s eyes, and she smiles a lot when she talks about New Day. She’s proud of what they offer young thespians from the area. “It’s not just Collierville students we serve,” she says. }We have students involved from 20 different schools, 25 different ZIP codes, and five counties.” No wonder the word is out.

The theatre offers a variety of instruction for all

developmental stages, from 4 to 18, including their Little Stars program (ages 4 to 6) that teaches creative movement for coordination and balance. Victoria’s Summer Stock, a free summer mainstage production in partnership with the Town of Collierville, offers an opportunity for students who may be too busy during the school year to participate. New Day’s “Bringing Life to Literacy” sends a visiting artist into a Pre-K classroom four times a year, where story time is blended with theater activities. The program had been created initially to serve Pre-K students in Collierville but has been expanded to serve Pre-K students at Hope House in Memphis.

New Day produces three plays a year, performed at the Harrell Theater. Glancing through the scrapbook of past plays, you’ll see a wide range of offerings — some not-so-surprising for children’s theater — Seussical or Charlotte’s Web, to those a bit more mature, such as Les Misérables or Into the Woods.

Often seen as a model for other children’s theater programs across the country, New Day is particularly attentive to the needs of their audiences. Their “sensitive-

friendly performances” address the needs of children with sensory processing differences, such as autism. Some children find loud noises and lighting changes during a performance unsettling. New Day responds to such needs. Lighting in the theater is kept on, but at a low level, and strobe lighting and sound levels are reduced to avoid startling effects. The theater provides plenty of space for standing and movement, as attendees can move about and leave their seats, and designated quiet spaces are available for those who need a break.

New Day offers six summer camps in three different timeframes for young performers between the ages of 6 and 13. The camps tantalize with names that are

certain to connect with junior thespians: Aladdin Kids Summer Camp; Finding Nemo, Jr. Summer Camp, and Junie B. Jones Summer Camp. New Day chooses their staff and teachers carefully, interviewing each person, and running background checks. “The safety of our students is our primary concern,” they state plainly on their website, and a detailed “rules and codes of conduct” is followed.

It’s a full basket of theater opportunities for the youth of Collierville, and Jennifer Douglas and the cadre of New Day Children’s Theater staff and volunteers have a world of youthful dreams to be fulfilled. No doubt, they’ll get there. The show must go on.

SIMPLY DELICIOUS , SIMPLY DONE

IF YOU’VE ATTENDED A PARTY OF NOTE IN COLLIERVILLE, CHANCES ARE YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED KAREN SHELTON’S DELICIOUS OFFERINGS . SHE IS THE FOUNDER AND CHEF OF SIMPLY DONE, A CATERING AND EVENTS COMPANY BASED ON WALNUT STREET IN COLLIERVILLE.

SHELTON LAUNCHED HER business 12 years ago at the prompting of a friend who knew she was a good cook and needed a caterer. Her tasty offerings were such a hit, Shelton left with a fistful of job leads. However, she waded slowly into the food business, where profit margins can be slim and success fleeting. She catered out of her home kitchen while continuing her day job as a freelance journalist. To broaden her repertoire, Shelton occasionally dined at upscale restaurants, recreating favorite dishes at home. It was a juggling act. Several years later, she finally decided to take a leap of faith.

“I told my husband, ‘I have to either do this full-time or not at all.’”

As it turned out, Shelton’s background in marketing and public relations proved to be as useful as being a well-versed cook. “I’m suited to catering because of my background in communications. I know how to listen,” she says. “I know what people want and they trust me to take care of what will be the biggest day of their life. I also try to keep my food at the exact cost I’ve quoted, but in the event a price jumps, I let my customer know and offer options that will keep them within their budget.”

Shelton listens closely to her clientele, determining who craves comfort food and who wants trendier cuisine. Her ability to adapt hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Last year, Simply Done received a nomination for 2022 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Collierville Chamber of Commerce, and the company has repeatedly been voted Best Caterer by the Collierville Herald and Memphis Most. “I had a good Southern mama who said you never run out of food. People say our portions are great because we make sure no one leaves hungry,” she says with a laugh.

Shelton loves the convenience of having her business just a mile from her home in Collierville. She employs a staff of 19: four full-time, 10 part-time, and five on-call staffers who help out during big events. Simply Done is located in the former Presbyterian church on Walnut Street, a historic structure that dates to 1886. Now, the stained-glass sanctuary serves as a popular venue for bridal showers, weddings, and retirement parties.

“Collierville’s small-town feel makes people want to support small businesses like mine,” Shelton observes. “The town is also good at promoting small businesses because they use them.”

On a busy Wednesday afternoon, the cell phone in Shelton’s office chirps incessantly as customers call in to pick up their food orders. When Covid struck in March 2020 and the world shut down, Shelton realized $35,000 worth of business would go out the door in cancelations. She had to act quickly. So she laid off staff (they filed for unemployment) and pivoted, opting to make meals customers could bake at home. Soon, weekly menus of pasta dishes, casseroles, and desserts were being posted on Facebook and the carry-out business quickly took off.

“A lot of people didn’t know we existed until the pandemic,” says Shelton. “Now, I have people who order every week, and we’ve gone on to cater parties and events for those clients.”

In fact, business became brisk enough that she expanded her space and staff during 2021 to keep up with demand. Her roster of regular clients now includes town staff, the Rotary Club and the Collierville Chamber of Commerce. “I personally know and feed the mayor, the vice mayor and the town aldermen,” she says. “I tell them what I need to do for my business and all have been supportive.”

Shelton gives back by being a Chamber member, serving on Main Street Collierville’s Board of Directors and supporting activities like Main Street’s Easter Shop and Hop. “It all helps to tie us into the community,” she says.

Shelton’s catering business has long been a family affair; all five of the couple’s children have lent a hand and husband Jeff bartends and does maintenance work.

“I’ve loved this space since I’ve lived in Collierville,” says Shelton of their location off of the square. “I love the town square and the feel of the historic district. I thought the building was so cute and quaint.”

When Shelton first opened for business, Simply Done sold cupcakes to help spread the word. Though the sweets are no longer offered regularly, they left an indelible impression. “People still call for our cupcakes!” she says.

As for being an entrepreneur, Shelton’s success prompted one of her sons to open an exercise gym on the town square. He followed his mom’s advice: Figure out what you enjoy doing and how you can make money doing it.

“We tried to instill in our kids that while you’ll have to work hard, it’s rewarding,” she says. “Because, in the end, the business is yours.”
