A celebration of the power of community

BY ALEX PURCELL

THE importance of community newspapers has been highlighted at the Cooroy Rag’s community grants celebration. More than 90 local businesses, community organisations, volunteers and dignitaries attended the event at the Cooroy Golf Club on 17 October – including State

MP Sandy Bolton. In her speech, Ms Bolton highlighted the importance of community newspapers like the Cooroy Rag. “During events like Covid across Queensland, people needed to feel connected, and local community newspapers were vital. “The saddest thing was, over the years many have stopped operating, and

that is why the Noosa and Nicklin communities are so lucky to have papers like the Cooroy Rag. “This paper continues to inform, update and share feelgood stories so important for connecting each other. “Sixty years in print and the longest-running community newspaper on the Sunshine Coast, it is one that keeps giving back,” Ms Bolton said.

Cooroy Rag advertising manager Judy Painter said the Rag solely exists because local businesses support it. “This community newspaper is here because of the support of advertisers. “Every person who picks up a Cooroy Rag and reads it needs to thank the advertisers that make the newspaper happen and support

the newspaper throughout the year. “When businesses advertise in the Cooroy Rag, they know their money is going to go back into the community. “Since 2000, more than $1 million of advertiser money has been returned to local community groups,” Mrs Painter said. Thirteen local community groups received funds

from the Cooroy Rag at this year’s grants celebration. “It was a heartwarming night. Our advertisers physically hand out the cheques to the recipients. “It was also a great opportunity for local businesses to get together over a cold drink and delicious food,” Mrs Painter said. See photos on pages 22-23.

Alex Purcell, Cooroy Rag Roaming Editor LIKE many on the east coast, my family and I have spent the last few weeks trying to dodge the rain in New South Wales. After getting flooded in Mudgee, we were forced to head south, our unexpected detour taking us to Bathurst and through Orange, areas we hadn’t yet explored. In Bathurst, we enjoyed a leisurely drive around the Mount Panorama Racing Circuit, which only weeks earlier was buzzing with thousands of people and supercars for the 2022 Bathurst 1000. We were fascinated by the 5,000-plus mineral crystals and fossils and Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton on display at the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum. And we spent hours just driving around admiring all the beautiful Federation-style houses built in the mid-1800s. In Orange, we narrowly avoided their coldest November day since 1988, making our way back to Tamworth where we could no longer avoid the rain, the local river peaking at 5.69 m, closing roads and bridges. Over the next couple of weeks, we will start making our way back home again where I am honoured to be representing the Cooroy Rag at my former high school’s (Noosa District State High) Celebration of Excellence awards.

The sky is the limit for these local students

The five students with McDermott Aviation HR Manager Chris Thomas (left) and Team Leader Tom Johnson.

FIVE local students have received a hands-on taste of helicopter engineering. Cooroy helicopter operator McDermott Aviation gave the students an introduction to a career in helicopter engineering as part of a national program aimed at boosting engineer num-

bers across the helicopter industry. McDermott Aviation owner, director and chief pilot, John McDermott, said the initiative was put together by the Australian Helicopter Industry Association (AHIA) and McDermott Aviation’s Cooroy facility.

“The aim of the initiative was to provide local students with an opportunity to get an introduction to a potential engineering career. “Each participant received a kit including high-quality tools and a sheet metal panel, and created a project with help from McDermott

Aviation Sheet Metal Team Leader Tom Johnson in a working helicopter maintenance hangar.” Local student Clancy McKenzie said it was a great day. “It was good to have some hands-on experience with one of McDermott Aviation’s

TL engineers. I am mainly focused on mechanical but it was good to look at the sheet metal side of the business and to have the workshop to ourselves (students) and to use all the different equipment.” Clancy, 15, is hoping to secure an apprenticeship with McDermott Aviation in the future after learning more about aviation engineering through a private tour of their Cooroy facility. “My dad met a guy at our local footy club who was going to Greece for a tour with McDermott Aviation for the fire season as an apprentice. “When my dad told me, I thought that sounded cool so we did some research on McDermott Aviation and found their HR email and contacted the HR team. “The HR team came back to us and invited us for a tour of the Cooroy facility. I was super impressed with the facility and that all helicopter maintenance was completed at the Cooroy location. “I asked if I could do work experience in the holidays and we organised that with the McDermott team.” Clancy said what attracts him most to a career in aviation engineering is the challenge.

“I like the challenge, I like working on machines at home, and I think working on helicopters would be great. My work experience week was great; I got to assist on a major refurb of one of the firefighting Bell 214B choppers. “I also like the idea that McDermott Aviation work internationally and all over Australia which is pretty exciting but I can still live at home. Since its inception in 1982, Cooroy-based McDermott Aviation has evolved and today owns and operates over 30 helicopters and employs over 100 staff worldwide. John said McDermott Aviation is the largest employer of aviation engineers in Australia and currently hosts the largest number of helicopter engineer apprentices nationally; however due to continued expansion, more engineers are required. “Next year, we are preparing our own Engineering Training Academy that will look to host local students and provide them with quality training and a career that can take them around Australia and the world but be based here at our Cooroy and Sunshine Coast Airport facilities.”

DAMAGING winds tore down signs and pushed over trees when a thunderstorm hit Cooroy on Thursday 27 October. Cooroy Hotel’s billboard was blown off its post on Maple Street while trees were uprooted in Lake Macdonald. Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Senior Meteorologist Pieter Claassen told the Cooroy Rag that after a hot, humid day, supercells formed late that afternoon. “Supercells formed late on Thursday in that part of the southeast and storms were moving around the Cooroy region. “The thunderstorm went through late evening around 5 to 6 pm. “A similar storm hit Gympie where we recorded 83 km/h winds and there were quite possibly isolated wind gusts of 90 km/h or more that weren’t recorded. “Winds of this speed can cause damage.” An Energex spokesperson said the storm caused damage ranging from powerlines down to tree branches blown across the electrical network, affecting power to

more than 9,000 customers in Cooroy and surrounding areas. “Lightning also affected supply to many local customers with more than 55,000 strikes recorded in the North Coast area. “Energex is reminding customers to be aware that a powerline on the ground can still be live so keep at least 10 m away from it and call triple zero immediately. “With summer storm season well and truly here, it's also prudent to ensure

you have an emergency kit handy which can include long-life canned food, drinking water, first aid kit, battery powered radio and torches.” Mr Claassen said the storm formed due to an unstable atmosphere and hot, humid conditions. “Combined, this created a strong rotating supercell thunderstorm – the kind of storm we often see produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall.”

Cooroy Car Part's smashed window.

A SENSELESS act of vandalism has left one Cooroy business with a $600 bill. The window of Cooroy Car Parts on Maple Street was smashed recently. Owner Mouette said their CCTV cameras captured the incident, and while the window is still intact it has to be completely replaced at a cost of $600. “From our footage, it was one person and it seems to look like they were angry because they punched our window with their first. “It was 8 pm on a Saturday night. They also punched the roller door of Kookabur-

ra Takeaway.” Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott said the suspect is a male who was involved in a verbal dispute prior to the offence. “The male suspect was involved in a verbal dispute with another male and three females in the vicinity of the Cooroy Library just prior to the offence. “The male is described as wearing black shorts, a white jumper, a red cap and a black backpack and aged about 17 years. “Any information as to the identity of the male would be appreciated and treated

as confidential.” Mouette praised the actions of local police. “The police were really good; they’re so wonderful here. “They immediately came and tried to track him down because they followed him with the town’s CCTV cameras. They even came back to let us know where they were at with their investigations.” Mouette said while they have insurance, the excess is still $500. “It’s just such a waste of money.”

TIME and its demands – next month will see Plod 20 years in the OIC Pomona Police chair. The old recliner fits a bit more snugly now, the cap unencumbered by thick hair – but yes, still here. Seeing generations of 95 per cent decent locals raise great families is a good thing for a town cop. In 2003, 70 per cent of our work was in Cooran, and for a small town, it had a tough demographic – with domestics, alcohol-fuelled violence, traffic crashes and youth crime all common occurrences. Until 2010, Pomona was a 2-man station despite having very high calls for service and regular after-hours call-outs. And Kin Kin, well, some hills were truly green with drug crops and only a brave property owner left

his vehicle, shed or house unlocked. Policing the previously worst section of highway in the country was also a challenge. Injury and fatal crashes on the Old Bruce Highway at Pomona and Federal were so frequent that we often went to bed in police overalls if it rained, waiting for the inevitable call-out. We worked alongside some standout crew like QAS Lee Mangan, Firie boss Sam Spink, and SES Stan Ryan who ran their crews with police at myriad crashes, yearly floods, fires and searches. I’m also forever grateful for the commitment of my old offsider Dion Horn, an outstanding community cop, currently a sergeant in the Roma District. In 2022, Pomona has four officers and the mountains we still climb are DV, mental health and property crime.

Since 2020, increased heavy truck haulage on the Kin Kin range and hinterland roads has fomented the anger of some residents and motorists on the haulage routes and has subsequently been the focus of local and state government, TMR and police to repair and restructure roads, and enforce and monitor compliance with existing legislation. Awaiting a court ruling determining future heavy vehicle (HV) usage and quarry operations, the situation remains intractable for many. The quarry is operating under currently permitted regulations although the increased HV traffic has reduced the quietude of the area and contributed to significant road damage. Let cool heads prevail, folks. Until next time, be safe. Sgt Dan McNamara OIC Pomona Police 54801733

THE last block of vacant commercial land in Cooroy has sold. Wythes Real Estate has sold 2 Emerald Street, a 1012 m2 block opposite Galah Home, for $1,200,000. Wythes Real Estate principal Sirah Robb said agent Warren Berry achieved a

fabulous result. “This was a rare opportunity to buy a vacant commercial with fantastic exposure to the busiest street in town.” “With an existing DA in place for a combined retail and office project with parking via the lane access at the rear, and potential for further development

resulting in greater rentable floor space, this block was a fabulous development opportunity. “Details of what the owners have planned for the block is commercial-in-confidence at this stage so we are not in a position to supply any details,” Sirah said.

HAVE you seen the beautiful mural on the back of the Cooroy RSL building? The club commissioned artist, muralist and graphic designer Austin Nitsua to “beautify the back of the club” with colourful paintings of two possums, Cooroy mountain, and soldiers in a

field of red poppies. The club said the mural is best viewed from the car park behind the Cooroy RSL off Garnet Street, Cooroy train station, and the east side of town. Nitsua is also the artist of the two murals at Cooroy State School. The tennis

courts were given a makeover late last year with a colourful painting of king parrots and the fleche on top of the school’s historical original building on one side, and Cooroy Mountain and the school emblem, the possum, on the other.

A LOCAL skincare company is sharing the love with Wildlife Noosa. Cootharaba based Nubeean Noosa is donating 10 per cent of all Healthy Skin [care] sales to Wildlife Noosa for the month of November. Nubeean Noosa owner, Sarah Luck said they ran their Share the Love promotion for Wildlife Noosa last year on Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend but this year’s promotion will go for a whole month. “We first discovered Wildlife Noosa when a kangaroo

was hit by a car at the end of our driveway in Cootharaba. “We recently heard that Wildlife Noosa has had a run of bad luck. One of their cars was stolen along with a load of equipment, so we decided to do the same promotion this year, only for a whole month rather than just a weekend.” Nubeean Noosa is a local skincare manufacturing and sales business using raw honey and beeswax along with organic plant oils and skin nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin B3. Sarah said she started

Nubeean Noosa 18 months ago with her partner Phil Eggleton. “I've consulted in private practice as a nutritionist for just over 20 years before this so my skincare range is very much about skin nutrition. “Phil moved from IT to becoming a beekeeper. We use our own ethical and healthy honey in our products. “We sell our skincare both online and at Pomona Country Markets, Coolum Sunshine Coast Collective, Witta and Kin Kin Markets.”

If he's not helping you sort out what you need, then he's out the back working on your vehicle. “Nick’s been here at Tyrepower Cooroy coming up six years now and he is our key tyre fitter and looks after all your tyre needs. “And Keegan is our casual. This is his first job out of school and is quickly

learning the trade.” Brian said like many businesses they were impacted by Covid but believe things are now almost back to normal. “We experienced major impacts of Covid and supply chain issues but the majority of these have now been addressed, although we still do suffer some challenges.” Brian said it is the support of Cooroy locals that has helped the business survive and thrive. “The feedback I get from Cooroy locals is they like spending money locally. They would rather buy from their home town than go somewhere else. “We get a lot of support from locals and we look to do the right thing for them. “I love Cooroy and looking after our customers.” Brian said with the Christmas holidays coming up, now is the time to check your vehicle is safe. “For anyone thinking of travelling, get a safety check to determine tyres are in a good condition and make sure you get your car serviced.” For all your tyres and vehicle servicing, call Brian and the team at Tyrepower Cooroy on (07) 5447 6900.

New smiles for longestablished dental practice AFTER 15 years in Cooroy, a popular husband and wife prosthetist and dentist team is moving to Tewantin. Dentist Dr Arosha Weerakoon and prosthetist Rob Arthur have bought Dr Frances Wing's Dental Surgery in the Cooloola Centre located in the heart of Tewantin. The surgery is now called Tewantin Family Dental, and Arosha and Rob welcome everybody to their new dental 'home'. Arosha said, “I am really grateful that Fran entrusted me with her practice, staff, and the ongoing care of her patients.” Fran served the Tewantin, Cooroy and surrounding communities for nearly 30 years. During this time, she built a loyal following of patients, many of whom she calls friends, whom she will miss greatly. Fran is grateful for the trust, friendship, and support many of her patients extended to her.

Paul more than just a psychic reader

She will miss working with not only her wonderful staff but her patients as well. But it is time. Dr Fran Wing said while she will miss her Tewantin family and staff, the time has come to step back and live some of the other dreams she's been dreaming. "It's not easy to do, but it is the right time. I trust I'm leaving what I've created in great hands, with Arosha taking over, and all my team remaining," Fran said. Arosha said, "What I am most grateful for, is a place to call my dental home so that I can continue to care for my existing patients, and hopefully meet new people who might be looking for someone to take care of their oral health needs." Arosha has lived and practised as a dentist in the Noosa area since 2004. She said what she loves most about what she does

is creating long-term relationships with her patients and their families. "I love to see my regulars at their dental appointments, and I have had the pleasure of watching children grow into adults and bring their children to me. Rob has been a dental technician since 1981 and a dental prosthetist since 2007. He has been working in the Noosa area since 1988. Rob said what he loves most about his job is making people happy. "People appreciate good-looking and well-fitting dentures." Rob and Arosha are looking forward to bringing dental management to all ages from toddlers through to the 'young at heart’ to Tewantin Family Dental. For more info visit tewantinfamilydental.com or call (07) 5449 7167.

A POPULAR psychic reader and psychic therapist formerly based in Montville is now working from Pomona. Paul Boulton uses his own version of therapy-based tapping to help people love and feel better about themselves, and improve

their ability to speak up and communicate. Paul said his clients have experienced stress, anxiety, self-worth issues, abuse, bullying, love and relationship issues, and depression. “My Positive Change Sessions have proven to be very effective in helping more than 2,500 people to live and love better in their life. “The genuine testimonials on my website show the gratitude that many people have gained from working

with me.” Paul also provides psychic readings about relationships, careers, families, prospects and more, in person, by phone and online. Paul’s latest book, about to be released, aims to help teachers, parents and carers support children and teenagers experiencing stress, anxiety and bullying. “It is a practical workbook with easy-to-use instructions,” Paul said. Hobby bubbles into business

WHAT started as a hobby has bubbled into a thriving business. Pomona couple Jade Baynes and Dean Power have been making laundry powder for their own personal use for many years. Jade said they use all local eco-friendly ingredients, and after perfecting the recipe

they recently had the idea to see if anyone else would like it. “Our product is made from the finest natural ingredients sourced locally. We like using it so we thought we’d see if our local community might be interested in trying it too.” They started with a homemade hut Dean “whipped up in a couple of hours” at the end of their driveway on Summit Road, Pomona. And their little hobby quickly turned into a popular business. “We received amazing feedback from our clients and have quite a number of repeat customers that we now call friends.

“We have since started a weekly stall at Pomona Country Markets. “We purchase all our ingredients locally to support our local community and now offer, in addition, camphor laurel scoops from the Woodworkers Club in Cooroy.” Jade and Dean’s Summit Suds eco-friendly laundry powder and liquid can be purchased at their weekly market stall or from their hut on Summit Road, Pomona. “We have an honesty box system so clients can call by anytime and purchase our laundry powder.” For more info call Jade on 0412 406 637.

Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor COUNCIL has launched its new Living Well program that offers free and low-cost access to a range of classes. This is the first permanent Living Well program Council has offered the community and we are all incredibly proud of it. Yoga, reiki healing, breath work and ‘Mum and bubs’ pilates are some of the activities on offer. The initiative takes a holistic approach addressing a range of health dimensions including physical, social, mental and spiritual health. You can also try yoga, tai chi, aqua aerobics and events specially designed for seniors with our Living Well Seniors program. For more information and a full list of activities please visit: www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ living-well-noosa Noosa Council is thrilled to become the first Qld council to use new interactive 3D hazard mapping technology to educate locals on how disaster events such as bushfires could personally impact them. We’ll be announcing a series of sessions soon where residents will be able to see exactly how a bushfire might behave if it unfolds in their immediate area. Knowing the risks bushfires pose to an immediate neighbourhood will

help locals to be prepared. The new tech is part of Council’s ongoing effort to reduce the shire’s bushfire risk and make the community more resilient. Over the past two years, we have invested significantly in measures aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2019 fires, including more controlled burns, greater trail maintenance and appointment of an in-house officer to oversee local hazard reduction efforts. Education is also very important if we are to be disaster ready so I would encourage residents to attend the community sessions once finalised so they can get to know their own risk, which will help inform household emergency plans. Speaking of disaster resilience, with the La Nina weather conditions hanging around, it’s a timely reminder for residents to familiarise themselves with Council’s Disaster Dashboard. The Disaster Dashboard provides up-todate information on weather warnings, road closures and power outages. Download our Emergency Action Guide for practical advice on what to do before, during and after a range of disasters. You can also sign up for Noosa ALERT to receive notifications. Visit

the Disaster Dashboard via our website www.noosa.qld. gov.au Noosa Council is extremely proud to be recognised for the development of Council's Risk Policy, collecting the Southeast Queensland Local Government Mutual Services (LGMS) Risk Excellence award. The policy, adopted in September this year, was the culmination of two years of work. The award recognises the collaborative efforts between councillors, and the executive and governance teams to drive the highest standards in the organisation. Speaking of awards, our Tablelands Road Bridge B replacement project in the hinterland has also won an award. The project took out the award for best project between $1 million- $2 million in the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland (IPWEAQ) Excellence Awards, and our wonderful Hinterland Adventure Playground in Cooroy is in the running to be named one of Qld’s best-managed projects. These awards are a very worthy acknowledgement of how incredibly hard and well Noosa Council staff work. Until next month, stay safe, Clare

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Notice is hereby given for Cooroy Community Newspaper Inc. Annual General Meeting 2022 DATE: Wednesday 30th November 2022 TIME: 5:30pm start LOCATION: Premises of Combined Coastal Car Club, Mary River Road, Cooroy

Joe Jurisevic Noosa Shire Councillor IT’S been a while since the Myall/Elm St and Diamond/ Elm St intersections were the talk of the town, with a solution yet to be accepted or delivered. Personally, I did not see merit in the roundabout or traffic light solutions – the main reason being the old rail bridge, which was built in the 1950s, that sits between these intersections. The bridge would not meet current standards as it is too narrow, and offers no pedestrian or cycle options for crossing. In my opinion, any upgrade of the Myall and Elm Sts intersection would be best facilitated in conjunction with a replacement of the existing rail bridge.

I see the proximity and nature of the bridge as the main impediment for access into and through the town and many of the traffic issues. The challenge of replacing the bridge is that it would close the principal connection between the east and west of Cooroy, and access to the highway for much of the traffic in and out of Noosa, necessitating the diversion of traffic onto other roads for months and would be a major inconvenience for residents. From what I understand, replacing the existing bridge is not on the TMR cards any time soon. Is it time to look at the

possibility of a second rail bridge crossing being built, where it may be ideally located, and how it could be integrated within the road network, or other possible options? A second rail bridge would alleviate the traffic issues at both Elm St intersections and create safer vehicle, pedestrian and cycle crossings. It would also significantly reduce any impact once the existing bridge comes to the end of its expected life. Given that the roundabout and traffic light solutions have not progressed, is this an option the Cooroy community is wanting to discuss further? Cr Joe Jurisevic

Please email secretary@cooroyrag.com.au for further details or should you wish to nominate for office. Nomination forms must be received by the Secretary no later than 16th November 2022.

Working for Noosa Communities

Llew O'Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay THERE is always incredible community spirit on display from the diverse range of volunteer groups throughout the Wide Bay electorate. Recently at Cooroy, I opened the 32nd annual Cooroora Woodcraft Show. So many people came along to support the event hosted by the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, and enjoyed the skills and talents of their members and the entries of other competitors from Wide Bay and further afield. Cooroora Woodworkers Club teaches people new skills and gives back to the community. Their members constructed the outdoor benches in the Japanese gardens at the much-loved

Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, providing a peaceful place of contemplation, relaxation and reflection for terminally ill patients and their families and friends. Cooroora Woodworkers also make a vast quantity of wooden toys which the Salvation Army distributes to children at Christmas, and they built a blackbutt counter for Parkyn’s Hut, Tewantin Explore Centre. The centre is run solely by volunteers and was recently recognised as Queensland’s best visitor information centre. Wide Bay owes much to its volunteers who generously give their time and energy in many different ways to strengthen local communities. Volunteering is not

only good for the community, but it can also be a great way to meet people and take on new challenges. It’s never too early or too late to learn new skills, and the Cooroora Woodworkers Club is a friendly place where you can learn a range of techniques including woodturning, scroll sawing, box making, wood carving, and pyrography. Their volunteers are masters at showcasing the beauty of natural timber and the club offers a welcoming space where their fabulous creations can be developed, displayed, and admired, or where items can be built for use in the wider community Llew O'Brien.

What: Tony Coles and Kerry Keyte art exhibit When: Opening night Friday 18 November from 5 pm to 6:30 pm Where: The Art Hub Cooroy, 3/2 Emerald Street, Cooroy Info: (07) 5447 6155 A NEW exhibition at the Art Hub Cooroy features the works of two resident artists. Tony Coles lives and works from his beachside home on the Sunshine Coast. Looking west, he finds inspiration from the roads, sheds, hills and sky; out to the east, the magnificent beaches, ocean, coves and headlands inform his work. Tony is interested in interpreting his surrounding subject matter through the balancing of its simple shapes. “The brushwork itself finds origins in loose painterly geometries that interact and move between passages of paint,” Tony said. Tony’s work often moves close to abstraction due to

the inventive breakup of space and deviation from local colour. Although Tony relies on things seen and felt, the painting dictates its own direction. Kerry Keyte works in mixed media which gives Kerry the ability to adapt and change her artwork inspired by the light and ocean lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast. Most of her artwork encompasses ocean themes or dramatic tones and is practical which can be used and is not just ornamental art hung on the wall for display. She describes her artwork as evolving, always experimenting and looking for new ways of creating and having fun.

THE Maroochy River Country Music Club will hold their November concert on Sunday 13 November commencing at 12 noon at the ACMA Country Hall of Fame, Yandina. Cost is $8 and includes free tea and coffee. Raffles available. All welcome. Enquiries to Darryl 0458 671 568. Billy Guy is the guest artist at the ACMA country music concert on Sunday 20

Enjoy popular country music and other upbeat crowd-pleasing favourites with a great house band. Walk-ups welcome. Raffle and door prizes, BYO lunch, free tea and coffee. Entry is $8. Cooroy artist exhibits at Bendigo Bank What’s On

What: Wendy Caitlin art exhibit When: Until Friday 18 November Where: Bendigo Bank Cooroy, Maple Street, Cooroy A COOROY resident is the current artist featured at Bendigo Bank Cooroy. Lake Macdonald artist Wendy Caitlin is exhibiting her oil and cold wax abstract works at Bendigo’s Community Bank Cooroy until 18 November. When Wendy moved to her home – where she

has a small studio for her creative activities – 14 years ago, she joined the local artist community by volunteering at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. She said it was here that she came in touch with many local artists, and became the volunteer gallery manager for many years.

“Managing the gallery was one of the highlights of my artistic endeavours. I had the opportunity to encourage beginning artists to take that first step to display their work – a hard step to take.” After retiring from volunteer work, Wendy had more time to devote to her art practice. She is self-taught but has taken many workshops from local tutors. Wendy said much of her work is an exploration of art materials. She began with watercolour, then moved onto acrylic and mixed media. “I always want to explore different materials and ways of creating. Most of my

work is abstract but sometimes literal.” This year she recently went on art trips to King Island, Tasmania, Ross River in the Northern Territory, and Arkaroola in the Northern Flinders Ranges, SA. “Each of these locations gave me increased insight into the beauty of nature and Australia. All unique, but each raw in its ancient story.” This current exhibition at Bendigo Bank features a series of eight small oil and cold wax abstract framed works. Also featured is a large abstract work in mixed media and a small painting of Mount Cooroora.

178 COOROY MOUNTAIN RD, COOROY THE Noosa hinterland town of Amamoor is looking for a new café operator. This is an exciting and unique opportunity ready for the right person, team, or partnership to take their love of food and hospitality to a new level. The Village Green Café Amamoor is located at the Amamoor Station precinct right in the heart of Amamoor. Here locals gather for monthly Cheers & Beers’ events; day trippers and campers stop in their thousands en route to the famous Gympie Muster site in the Amamoor State Forest;

and Mary Valley Rattler passengers disembark to stretch their legs, grab a bite to eat and watch the train turn in preparation for the journey back to Gympie. The café building is a refurbished Queensland Railway canteen carriage with an undercover alfresco dining area. This facility is owned by not-for-profit Friends of Amamoor who are keen to engage and work with an experienced café operator whose vision is to make this café once again a drawcard for locals and visitors. They are looking for someone with vision and an

established track record of building a name, brand, and signature dish to make the ‘Village Green Café Amamoor’ a foodie and coffee destination point for all. Whilst the steam train pulls up to the café door on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, this would be a 5-day café operation becoming a venue of choice for locals to sit, mix and mingle from Wednesday to Sunday. To submit your expression of interest, please email friendsofamamoor@gmail. com with ‘Café Interest’ in the subject line.

Participants sought for eco-anxiety study A LOCAL CQUniversity PhD candidate is looking for people to be a part of an innovative program. Annie Nolan is looking for participants to join a tree-planting event in Cooran. Annie said it is for a research study by CQUniversity being conducted in the Noosa Shire, funded by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and supported by Noosa Council and Noosa Landcare. The study seeks to understand how taking proactive action on climate change through planting trees to draw down carbon emissions impacts levels of eco-anxiety. “Across the globe, more people are expressing their concern about the impacts

of climate change and the need to take proactive action to reduce greenhouse gases across all sectors of the community. “Eco-anxiety is a relatively new concept now coming to the fore. “People experiencing eco-anxiety may not have been directly affected by a major climate-change impact but are experiencing emotional distress and anxiety about a future impacted by climate change.” Annie said younger people aged below 35 years and those with a greater affinity with the natural environment are more likely to experience eco-anxiety. “Recent statistics show that 75 per cent of young people think their future is frightening, and 84 per

cent said they were worried about climate change.” Over three planting days held in March, around 80 people came together to plant over 1,200 trees, offsetting around 3,000 tonnes of carbon over the lifetime of the trees. “Participants said they had a great day doing something positive for the environment alongside other people with a shared purpose for collective effort.” The next tree-planting day is being held in Cooran on Sunday 13 November and anyone over the age of 16 years is invited to participate in this study. To register go to: www. noostreeplanting.com or contact Annie on anne. nolan@cqumail.com.

Community groups say a big thank you!

Committee members and staff; Ashely Spresser, Stephen Hilditch, Judy Painter, Jodi Brennan, Kristina Tindall, Drew Fenton and Ray Kelly.

THIRTEEN community groups have received funds from the Cooroy Rag in this year’s round of community grants. Here is what some of the groups have planned. ON behalf of Noosa and District Pipe Band Inc. can I say a very big thank you to Cooroy Rag for the generous grant of $1000. The Band is extremely grateful for this help after a few years of tough times. We would also like to congratulate the Cooroy Rag on the wonderful role you play in our vibrant community, being so supportive of all the events that happen in our area. The funds will be used in many different ways to help with the upkeep of the band. Noosa and District Pipe Band Inc. treasurer Claire Day THE Cooroy Horse & Pony Club have used part of the funds received to purchase a new equine first aid kit (as per new PCA regulations) and the remainder will be used to update our existing rider first aid kit to ensure the safety of all riders and horses. Cooroy Horse & Pony Club secretary Leeona Baxter THE Ridgewood Community Hall Committee were fortunate enough to be a recipient of a grant from the Cooroy Rag. Every second month, we as a committee produce a magazine/ booklet which contains stories of people and events which take place within this fabulous community. We have two very enthusiastic editors: Sarah and Janelle, who have been struggling with an ancient and very slow computer to produce the magazine, and so when the Co-

oroy Rag announced the round of grants for 2022 we applied with the vision of using the funds to purchase a new computer. We would like to thank the Cooroy Rag for this fantastic initiative! As Cooroy is our nearest town the Rag keeps us up to date with local events and happenings and so is of great value to our community. Ridgewood Community Hall president Chris Kirkpatrick COOROY Blue Light Disco will be using the grant money for the general running of the discos – buying prizes, DJ costs, special awards, etc. Without support from the local community, like the Rag, it would make it hard for us to stay viable as we like to keep entry prices down to help encourage attendance. We can’t thank the committee and staff enough for their continuing support. Cathy Breed on behalf of Cooroy Blue Light Disco THE Pomona Cooran Cutters RLFC are currently in the process of upgrading our canteen. Running the canteen provides us the opportunity to fundraise to help provide all the essentials that our players need for training and games. The grant money will go towards maintaining health and safety for our volunteers. Pomona Cooran Cutters RLFC president Sharon Collins

could hand to buyers of new properties. The Cooroy Rag grant will help meet the production setup costs. We are grateful for this support so that our local northern hinterland towns will continue to be resilient and welcoming to all. Pomona & District Chamber of Commerce Inc. secretary Brian O’Connor THE donation received from Cooroy Rag is very timely. We started our “kitchen refurbishment” and although when applying for a grant you try to cover all bases, there are always extra expenses. We are replacing all our stainless steel after 30 years and making a few adjustments along the way to comply with food safety standards. Your welcome donation will help us meet some of those extra expenses. Pomona & District Meals on Wheels treasurer Irene Gibbs THE funds will be used for the purchase of equipment (eg. lawn bowls) for use by lawn bowl beginners, social players and community groups. Cooroy Bowls Club

THE Pomona and District Chamber of Commerce saw the need for a ‘Welcome to District’ information pack that the chamber will now prepare in the first few months of 2023. The pack will take the form of a booklet, in the first instance, that real estate agents and community centres

Spiky facts about echidnas With Sunshine Coast Vets

Brooke from Sunshine Coasts Vets Pomona with an echidna.

THESE weird little creatures are just cool. Here’s a few things you didn’t know about echidnas. Baby echidnas are called puggles. After a puggle hatches, its quills and spine are not fully formed. Its skin

is soft and smooth, and its claws are small and fragile. After several months in its mother’s pouch, the puggle emerges with the distinct appearance of adult echidnas. Female echidnas carry

their eggs in a pouch. Female echidnas usually lay a single egg at a time. Shortly after the egg has been laid, the mother transfers the egg to a pouch on her ventral (stomach) surface. She incubates the egg for 10 to 11 days until it hatches. After hatching, the young echidna either travels with the mother in her pouch or remains in a burrow while she forages for food. Their tongues are the key to their diet. Termites, ants, and other insects make up the bulk of an echidna’s diet. To find them, echidnas use their long sticky tongues to reach into burrows and tunnels in search of food. Some species, such as the short-beaked echidna, use their long snouts to break up logs and termite mounds. Echidnas have no teeth and must grind their food between their tongue and the bottom of their mouth before swallowing it. Echidnas are great swimmers. Their primarily terrestrial lifestyle doesn’t keep echidnas from taking the occasional swim. They seek out bodies of water in which to groom and bathe.

Cooroy gets behind fundraiser PINK was the name and raising money for breast cancer was the game. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s annual monthlong pink-themed fundraiser to raise awareness and money to supply specialist breast care nurses for men and women with breast cancer has been a “huge success”. Pink Up Cooroy organiser Carol Christensen said businesses were encouraged to “pink up” for the month and many local shops embraced the theme. “So many shops got involved with a pink-dressed window. “The best-dressed window winner was Cooroy Country Wear and Jeanery. The highly commended went to SPV Accounting and Richies Bakery Cooroy.” The month-long fundraiser ended with a bang – of the gavel, with an auction at the Pink Up Cooroy fundraiser breakfast raising $3,000 for the McGrath Foundation. “Auctioneer Richard Hansen from HinterAuctions did a wonderful job. “A loaf of pink bread sold for $70 and the mystery

prize, a Jackie Zipf sponge cake, went for $500.” More than 120 locals, businesses and councillors dressed in pink to attend the breakfast at Saw & Mill Cooroy on 28 October. “Mayor Clare Stewart and Councillor Karen Finzel were there. “Our guest speaker was Glen McGrath’s wife Sarah. She spoke about the foundation and her own mother’s journey with breast cancer.” Carol said with the auction, raffle and ticket sales from the breakfast, more than $5,000 has been raised for

the McGrath Foundation – but that figure will be higher. “I am still waiting on totals from the Cooroy Hotel, Cooroy RSL and Saw & Mill on their gold coin donations from the sale of all schnitzels during October. “And the IGA Cooroy had a day where they got dressed up in the store and raised money.” Carol said she was thrilled with the support this year for Pink Up Cooroy from businesses and the community. “I can see this event growing bigger and bigger. The support this year was huge.”

THE children and staff of Cooroy Outside School Hours Care (COSHC) connected with local Bee Man, Pete Velenski, after the Cooroy Rag highlighted the wonderful work Pete does preserving native stingless bee hives in our community. Pete has shown the children which flowers are favoured by the bees and which pose a threat. It was during one of Pete’s educational visits that the

children learnt there are African tulip trees growing near the school. These trees are threatening the children’s hive of approximately 7,000 Tetragonula carbonaria native stingless bees. At COSHC the children are encouraged to have a ‘voice’ in the community and speak up on issues that affect or concern them. Ivy, 9 years, and Lilly, 10 years, wrote to Noosa Council expressing their

concerns about the safety of the service’s native bees and requested the removal of these trees. Noosa Council heard their concerns. The African tulip trees, a category three restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014, have now been listed for removal in 2023 as part of the council’s proactive tree management program. Thank you for listening, Noosa Council. Thank you for saving the bees.

Students help in Indigenous community

NOOSA Christian College students have had the opportunity to work in an Indigenous community as part of the Year 10 RAW Impact camp. RAW Impact stands for Raising Awareness Worldwide, and NCC Secondary Coordinator Mr Daniel Pink said students worked on stripping and painting buildings in the community and

general maintenance. “Three days were spent stripping back and painting their old school building and rain shelters, painting toilets and family shelters, plus clearing bushland around their lagoon, digging holes and running electrical cabling. “There was also some general maintenance such as whipper snipping and

cleaning up fallen logs. “All of our students had the opportunity to get on the electric tools, which they enjoyed immensely. All of our students got involved and really worked hard.” In the afternoons, students spent time doing cultural activities. “Learning about bush tucker, eco dyeing, listening to Country and learning about first contact with Europeans for this nation we were with. It was very interesting and enjoyable as our hosts were very open to share their history. “The appreciation of the elders when we left was incredible with hugs all round and a real heartfelt thank you to all our students and staff.” To celebrate the end, students headed to Carnarvon Gorge for a hike and a swim plus some reflection time and downtime.

Cooroy golfers tee off for breast cancer Shop 8/14 Maple Lane, Cooroy

PH: 5447 7670

www.advancedphysiocooroy.com.au

COOROY Golf Club’s ‘Tee off for Breast Cancer’ was a hole-in-one. A club spokesperson said the charity day, held on Thursday 20 October, was well supported by both 9-Hole and 18-Hole women as well as the Cooroy Vets. “Pink attire was a requirement and members embraced it. “The Greens Superintendent, Warren, was given free rein on the course and

set up numerous challenges for golfers. Escape dots ensured scores were high and fun was the order of the day. “A total of $1,913.48 was raised for breast cancer research, a fantastic amount from our small club.” The club would like to thank all who donated prizes for the raffle and helped in any way to make the day a big success. “Special mention to Jenny

and Tom who worked tirelessly in the clubhouse and also to Warren on the course. Without their commitment to our club and its members, the day would not have been the success that it was.” Winners of the competition on the day were Tina Thomas and Lorraine Munro (58) with Lorraine Kelly and Richard Green (55 c/b) runners-up.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF PRECIPE, TACIT ACCEPANCE AND CONVEYANCE IGA group manager Romeo Bordignon, Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre Coach Mark Evans, Paige Robinson and IGA owners Peter and Jackie Zipf.

COOROY boxer Paige Robinson has received a cheque for $1000 from Cooroy IGA to help her journey to Spain. The 17-year-old has been selected to represent Australia in the Amateur Boxing team at the World Championships in Spain in November. Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre coach, Mark Evans, said Paige has been the only female to be named in the team. “For Paige, it was a very

nervous time waiting for the Australian selectors to name the team. But the wait was worth it. She made the team and she is the only female.” Paige recently won the gold medal in the 60 kg division of the Female Youth Championship of Australia and was also named Best Female Boxer of the tournament. Since starting boxing at Impact seven years ago, Mark said Paige’s dedication, hard work and com-

mitment to her sport have paid off. “At just 17 she has been crowned the best female boxer in her division in the country and now she will represent Australia. She has always dreamed of wearing the green and gold. I honestly believe that this is her time to shine,” Mark said. The titles, which will be held in Alicante Spain, will be contested from November 5 to November 15.

The studio is an architectural style, and it has the wow factor on space and style. With ceiling fans, air-conditioning and a slow combustion woodfire heater, there is a kitchenette and spacious verandah. Address: 25 Glenbar Road, The Palms

Address: 28 George Street, Kenilworth

Details: 4 bed, 2 bath, 2 car Agent: Darren Newton 0419 725 182 Agency: RJR Property MOVE straight in! George Street is in the newer section of Kenilworth, where blocks are more elevated, providing a rural outlook/ view. While the house at number 28 is four years old, it looks brand new, with modern styling, executive finishes and perfect presentation inside and out. It’s a new home in an established setting. Externally, this is a low-set, steel-framed, brick home,

with a double garage under the roofline, set in well-established gardens. Internally, an entry hall takes you to an open-plan living area that includes an air-conditioned lounge, a dedicated dining room and a spacious kitchen. High ceilings and tiled floors are features in a living area that is complemented by a covered north-facing entertainment space that overlooks the garden and beyond. Extra insulation keeps this home at a comfortable temperature. The modern kitchen features electric cooking with a double oven, a dishwasher, loads of storage and bench space and a fantastic island bench, home to a breakfast bar that caters for a family.

There are three dedicated bedrooms – the main with a walk-through robe, ensuite and a study/fourth bedroom … a real parents’ retreat. All other bedrooms have built-in robes. The main bathroom has a bath and separate shower and both bathrooms have modern styling. The fully-insulated double garage has internal access, and a second driveway provides access to the secure rear yard and a dedicated van/boat parking bay. The established gardens on this 825 m2 block include a well-organised chook run and raised veggie garden beds. A water tank for the garden and solar power and hot water are just a few of the hidden extras.

Details: 3 bedroom house on 2 hectares Agent: Robyn Corbett 0417 898 821 Agency: RJR Property WHILE this property has double road frontage to both Glenbar and Benian Roads, it takes its access from Glenbar Road. The five-acre (2 ha) naturally timbered block provides privacy and solitude in a quiet location. A full-length front verandah is both the access point for the house and the relaxation/entertainment spot, where birds provide the background sounds, especially the resident maggie! It’s reminiscent of John Wil-

liamson’s “Home Among the Gum Trees” – a clothesline out the back, and a verandah out the front ... The low-set brick and tile house was built well over 30 years ago and is a fine example of the eighties … back in the day! Inside, it’s straight into an L-shaped lounge/dining room via either the front door or a sliding door. The kitchen has a freestanding electric stove and while it is original, it’s in good condition. There are three bedrooms all with built-in robes, and one bathroom with a bath and separate shower, and a separate toilet. The décor hasn’t changed

in its 30-plus-year history; it’s caught in an era … do you remember when? Outbuildings include a three-bay garage with parking for two vehicles and a workshop and storage, plus a lined room ideal for a home office, craft room or teenager’s getaway. Services include mains and solar power, a septic system and three water tanks. The established grounds include a stone retainer wall and mature trees and shrubs. Glenbar Road is on the rural outskirts of Gympie, 10 minutes from the CBD. From here you have easy access to the Bruce Highway.

RJR Property LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! It’s the number one and best-known term in real estate, but where did it come from, and what does it mean? It was first used around 80 years ago and suggests that the value of identical homes can increase or decrease, depending on their location. The word LOCATION is said three times to emphasize the point. A British TV show of the same name, first aired over 20 years ago, has made the use of the phrase more popular. Whether you are a long-term or short-term resident of the hinterland, whether your home is in the valley, the range or close to the coast, you know that you live in the best place. We know it, and so do the buyers! Therefore, the word location adds value to your property.

www.RJRproperty.com.au

Here are some of the reasons why: THE LOCATION – even within the hinterland, specific locations hold varying values, depending on the buyer’s requirements. To some, it matters to be close to the coast, close to a major centre or close to Brisbane etc. THE LANDSCAPE – It’s picturesque … second to none. The variety ranges from hills to valleys, waterways to forests, bush to grazing, villages to acreage and views to privacy. THE LIFESTYLE – while we can all choose a different activity; a hinterland lifestyle is on everyone’s list. THE ACCESS – There is no doubt that an upgraded Bruce Highway/Freeway plays a large part in access to & from our hinterland. It has made this part of Queensland more accessible, a better location. To discuss your property’s location and its overall value on today’s real estate market, give the RJR sales team a call, or drop into an RJR Property office.
