DAMAGING winds tore down signs and pushed over trees when a thunderstorm hit Cooroy on Thursday 27 October. Cooroy Hotel’s billboard was blown off its post on Maple Street while trees were uprooted in Lake Macdonald. Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Senior Meteorologist Pieter Claassen told the Cooroy Rag that after a hot, humid day, supercells formed late that afternoon. “Supercells formed late on Thursday in that part of the southeast and storms were moving around the Cooroy region. “The thunderstorm went through late evening around 5 to 6 pm. “A similar storm hit Gympie where we recorded 83 km/h winds and there were quite possibly isolated wind gusts of 90 km/h or more that weren’t recorded. “Winds of this speed can cause damage.” An Energex spokesperson said the storm caused damage ranging from powerlines down to tree branches blown across the electrical network, affecting power to

you have an emergency kit handy which can include long-life canned food, drinking water, first aid kit, battery powered radio and torches.” Mr Claassen said the storm formed due to an unstable atmosphere and hot, humid conditions. “Combined, this created a strong rotating supercell thunderstorm – the kind of storm we often see produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall.”
