Cooroy playground finalist in state award

COOROY’S Hinterland Ad venture Playground is in the running to be named one of Queensland’s best-managed projects.

The multi-million dollar proj ect is a finalist in the Project Management Achievement Awards.

The winner will be an nounced in a few days.

Mayor Clare Stewart said it’s a legacy project that the entire shire is proud of.

“We are so pleased to see this playground make a difference to the hinterland –with the economic benefit to Cooroy businesses coupled with the strong community

visitation, it really does tick all the boxes,” she said.

Infrastructure Delivery Manager Craig Eldridge said everyone is chuffed to be a finalist in the prestigious awards.

“A number of council staff put a lot of energy and effort into delivering a unique and family-friendly playground

that is designed for younger and older children alike,” he said.

“I really want to commend the likes of Dallas Bickley, Paul Brennan, Mitch Turner and Ben L’Huillier and our 37 contractors,” he said.

Noosa Council Project Manager Paul Brennan said it was a privilege to help de

liver such an iconic project.

“It was very much a team effort across council and the community,” Mr Brennan said.

Conceived back in 2013, the idea took about four years to become part of council’s capital works program.

With funding from the

Queensland Government, as part of the Local Government and Subsidies Program, council started planning, designing and working with the community to deliver the $6.7 million nature-based, all-abilities adventure play ground.

The playground officially opened in early May this year.

GROWING up in Cooroy I had an idyllic lifestyle –days spent at the Noosa beach, sailing on the river, weekends camping in the hinterland, picnics, horse rides, bushwalks – we were always outside.

And while I know I wore sunscreen, I’m now learning it obviously wasn’t enough.

After having three basal cell carcinoma (BCC) skin cancers removed, two from my shoulder and one from my leg, I get regular skin checks.

When home recently for the Gympie Music Muster and Mingle with the Mayor Ball, I booked in with my doctor for a check-up.

I had a little blackish mole on the inside of my knee. I’d look at it when sitting in the car and pop a dab of sunscreen on it.

At my skin check my doctor did a biopsy on it –and another mole that had changed – and while I knew the one on my knee was something, I wasn’t quite prepared for the diagnosis.

Melanoma. Low grade, thankfully, but a melanoma all the same.

I was booked in to have it out while we were home and lots of internal stitches and over 20 staples later, I now have a large L-shaped scar.

But they got it all and that’s all that matters.

I now have to have skin checks every three months and I am being more vigilant than ever. My family too.

I always wore sunscreen on my face but now I wear it daily on my arms and legs too. I always have my Akubra on and I’ve downloaded the SunSmart app to check the UV level each day in the town we’re travelling through.

So, if you haven’t had a skin check for a while, please have one, for me.

WHAT began with a call for help to find information about her family has ended with a meeting with long-lost relatives.

Lesley Grove reached out to the Cooroy Rag over 12 months ago to see if anyone had information about her great-grandfather, Harry

find info about her family

Risley.

Lesley said all she knew about her grandmother’s father was that his family settled in Pinbarren in 1904 and Harry married, had four children and was a butcher in Cooroy.

“William (Harry’s father) and his family arrived in Queensland with other po tential settlers to survey the land for farming. This group was later known locally in Kin Kin as the Risley Group.

“Harry married Mabel King in 1907. She was a bush nurse and a very good pianist. They had four children: Tuppence (Tup), Stella, Richard (Dickie who died in a car crash aged 22 in 1937), and Isobel (Bid, my grandmother).

“Mabel passed away in 1929.

“Their family home was called Richmond, located on Tablelands Rd, Cooran, and Harry's brother William took over the family farm at 238 Upper Pinbarren Creek Rd, Pinbarren.

“My mum, Cheryl, didn't actually meet her grandfa ther, Harry, until she was about 14 years old.

“My grandmother (Isobel/ Bid) didn't have a good relationship with him and unfortunately, my mum and Stella's daughter Loma are the only living relatives left and don't have a huge amount of information about the Risleys.”

After the story was pub lished in the Cooroy Rag in August last year, a lady called Jane contacted the paper.

Her grandfather was Har

ry’s brother.

“Surprisingly, my brother, Kevin and Jane both live in Cairns. Mum and I had flights booked to visit Kevin in August and thought it was the perfect opportunity to meet Jane.

“We then found out Jane has a sister, Billie, who lives just outside of Cairns and was also keen to meet us.”

“Jane and Billie also have two brothers and another sister, who we didn’t get to meet, and sadly, one of the brothers, Tom Risely, has passed away. He was a highly regarded artist with art in galleries all over the world and surprisingly, he looked very much like Harry.

“We had a lovely day meeting Jane and Billie – we could definitely see a family resemblance, my mum and

I could see my grandmother in Billie – and hearing all about their family.

“It was an amazing day.”

In December, Lesley also took her mum Cheryl to Po mona cemetery and Kin Kin.

“We found the gravesites of Harry, Mable, Richard (my grandmother's parents and brother), and Harry's family.

“We also went to Kin Kin where Mum spent some of her childhood.

“We plan to go back in the near future and visit the his torical centre and see if we can find out anything else.”

Lesley thanked the Cooroy Rag for helping connect her with Jane.

“I can't thank you enough for what you have done.

You have helped so much and Mum and I are eternally grateful,” Lesley said.

Council did not ‘backflip’ on Cooroy memorial decision

NOOSA Council did not “backflip” on its decision to allow a memorial for four people tragically killed in Cooroy Creek in 1981 to be installed.

Following news (Cooroy Rag 28 September 2022) a location has been found for a memorial seat made by the Cooroora Woodwork-

ers Club for Derek Lange, 11; his mother June, 30; Shayne Parker, 9; and Ricky von Blanckensee, 18, Council said it did not reverse its policy of rejecting applications for memorials to allow this one.

"Council listened, acknowledged the significance of this event to the Cooroy

community, and worked closely with the community and the Cooroy Rag to achieve a resolution of this matter that meets the community's goals, within council's frameworks,” Noosa Council Communications and Community Engagement Manager Ken Furdek said.

Cooroy Rag staff met with Noosa Council officers at the Cooroora Woodworkers Club on Lower Mill Road to find a location within council’s framework for the bench seat.

Now that a suitable site has been agreed upon, Cooroy Rag staff are working on the installation of the

memorial seat and liaising personally with the families on the unveiling of the memorial.

Cooroy Rag editor Alex Purcell said what is important is that a solution has been found for a memorial to honour the four lives lost and their families.

“Four decades after one of

Cooroy’s biggest tragedies, this seat will be a legacy to Derek, Shayne, June and Ricky and their families.

“It will remain a permanent place for their families and the community to come and remember them and to reflect on all that has been lost since that tragic day.”

Police look for car stolen from Pomona

DURING the past couple of weeks, a suspicious blue Nissan Navara dual cab tray back utility driven by a 34-year-old male has been sighted driving into private properties in the West Co oroy and Pomona areas in cluding Ridgewood, Carters Ridge and Belli Park.

When challenged, the male driver just drives off or gives a clearly false reason for being there before leaving. It is very pleasing to see these communities sharing these sightings via their various social media community pages with the bush telegraph working wonders quickly spreading within a very short time frame.

On 23 September, a sight ing was confirmed on the Kenilworth Skyring Creek Road with Cooroy police immediately notified and attending, leading to the vehicle being located and pursued.

However, due to the dangerous conduct of the driver, which clearly

endangered members of the public, the vehicle was not further pursued and was last seen headed north on the Bruce Highway.

Police have now arrest ed a 35-year-old Monto man for numerous, serious criminal offences including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault of a police officer and danger ous driving. It is extremely pleasing to the police to have such a proactive community out there, who are willing to step up and help out their neighbours when this suspicious type of behaviour is occurring.

Hopefully, this person won’t return now that he has been pursued by the police but please continue to be vigilant and report sightings as soon as they occur.

Overnight on 23 and 24 September, a red 2011 Ford Territory 4x4 station wagon, Queensland rego CAS35, was stolen from the Old Bruce Highway at Gardners Rd, Pomona intersection after it was left there by the owners after it experienced mechanical difficulty.

Investigations reveal a

window was smashed to gain entry and it may have been stolen for parts and accessories or may even be getting driven around the area. So, if your neighbour has recently acquired a similar vehicle parked in the backyard or you see this ve hicle getting around, please contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or Cooroy Police on 5442 5030 or Po mona Police on 5480 1733.

Please note that admin istration staff are on duty at both police stations to attend to general inquiries. Cooroy administration hours are from 9 am to 2 pm Monday to Thursday, and Pomona hours are from 8 am to 4 pm Tuesday and Thursday.

Of course, police are available at all other times and are generally out and about attending to calls for service. If you call the station and don’t get a re sponse, please call 131 444 Police Link for non-urgent issues and the police will return your call.Call 000 in an emergency.

Stay safe out there, Mal

HOW Noosa Council has supported, and is supporting the hinterland was the topic at this year's Dinner with the Mayor.

Local residents and business owners at the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce annual event held at Saw & Mill earlier this month heard from Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart with Councillors Karen Finzel and Amelia Lorentson in attendance too.

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Sirah Robb said Dinner with the Mayor is a highlight on the chamber's calendar of events, and this year was no different.

"Mayor Clare delivered an insightful speech reflecting on council's achievements and the path forward."

"It was apparent there is much for our hinterland community and local businesses to be excited about, including a new council CEO with a 'how can we do this' approach, whole shire thinking that prioritises the hinterland, and opportunities that will become legacy benefits for our region off the back of our involvement in the 2023 Olympic Games," Mrs Robb said.

there have been many challenges and changes for council since last year's Dinner with the Mayor event.

council of our new CEO

Scott Waters is the biggest change and an incredibly positive one, while the flood damage to the region in February and March has been the biggest challenge.

"The shire endured one major landslide, 28 landslips, two water crossings and over 100 roads damaged, and council is currently fixing 70 potholes a day on average and has advocated the state government for $37 million in recovery funding for the Black Mountain landslide."

But despite the impact of these major weather events, Cr Stewart said council still delivered $35 million worth of capital projects in the 2021–2022 year to the Noosa Shire – the most in a 12-month cycle.

"Other commitments by this council to the hinterland include: $1.1 million in the budget to upgrade trail 5 of the Noosa Trail Network, and $250,000 for upgrades of trails with high ecological value and an audit completed of all nine Noosa Biosphere core trails with upgrades planned for two

to upgrade 2.3 km of Middle Creek Road."

"Council also bought a specialised six-wheel grader for hinterland gravel roads for council's Pomona Depot, upgraded Cooran horse yards, renovated and reopened the Kin Kin Rec Hall, extended the lease at Cooroy Butter Factory for three more years, saw the Hinterland Adventure Play ground project through to completion with a $6.7million investment, completed concept plans for Cooroy Sports Complex with a soccer and cricket house redevelopment and expansion of the gymnastics facility, and stood by our hinterland community, as promised, taking the operators of the Kin Kin Quarry, Cordwell Resources, to court.

"Pomona Community House will also get a library kiosk in the next month or so and council's free weekend buses cover the hinterland from Noosa to Cooran via Cooroy and Pomona included," Cr Stewart said.

Mrs Robb said healthy businesses equal a strong

Residents submit impact submission to council

FOLLOWING a community meeting at Federal Hall in late August, Black Mountain residents impacted by a landslide that will take two years to fix, have prepared a draft impact submission and submitted it to Noosa Council.

A Black Mountain Commu nity Group spokesperson said an encouraging number of Black Mountain residents came together for the meet ing “to consolidate its priority issues and needs pending the reinstatement of Black Mountain Road and draft a submission based on these priority issues at the advice of the Noosa Council at their last pop-up meeting in July”.

“Everyone who attended the Federal Hall meeting shared stories and priorities, and/or provided thoughtful feedback in preparation for a draft submission.

“As a result, the Black Mountain community has been working together since

to build such a proposal.

“A submission was prepared by 80 residents im pacted by the landslide and the families they represent and presented to the Noosa Council on 20 September 2022.”

Noosa Mayor Clare Stew art said she has welcomed the detailed submission from Black Mountain residents.

“We continue to work with Black Mountain residents to help them through this challenging and frustrating period.

“The severity of the land slide has created a number of flow-on effects for the community and we need to work together with the residents to resolve what we can.”

Noosa Council will be hosting a community pop-up meeting with Black Mountain residents on Saturday 22 October.

“Council staff and council lors will address many of the

specific issues raised when we meet at this month’s community pop-up and it’s important we develop a strong partnership with the community to help them through this recovery phase,” Cr Stewart said.

The Black Mountain Community Group spokes person said they are hopeful it will see results as they work toward building a solid partnership with Noosa Council, moving through the next phases of the landslide recovery.

“It will be a ‘town hall’ style meeting and a timely opportunity for residents, along with their families and friends, to address the submission and connect and engage directly with Noosa Council,” the spokesperson said.

The community pop-up meeting will be held at Federal Hall on Saturday 22 October 2022 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

“Whole-of-life costs includ ing decommissioning, envi ronmental and social impact costs need to be considered in evaluating whether this project stacks up for reduc ing carbon emissions,” she said.

Attendees at one of the Pumped Hydro Project community engagement sessions in July.

IMBIL’S Borumba Dam has been identified by the Queensland Government as “one of the best” po tential sites for long-du ration pumped hydro in Queensland through the Queensland Hydro Study.

The Borumba Dam Pumped Hydro project and a new Queensland super grid (SuperGrid) connect ing solar, wind, battery and hydrogen generators are just two parts of the $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan announced by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk late last month.

Borumba Pumped Hy dro Project Director Chris Gwynne said Borumba Dam had been earmarked as a potential pumped hydro site for nearly four decades.

“Pumped hydro will play a vital role in the transforma tion of the energy system to renewable energy and a more diverse generation mix across Queensland,” Mr Gwynne said.

A dedicated, pub licly-owned entity –Queensland Hydro – has been set up to deliver the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project, and Mr Gywnne said the team met with key stakeholders in Imbil, Kandanga and Gympie last week to further discuss the project.

“The Borumba project team met with a dedicated local stakeholder group to discuss a traffic and trans port study while the wider environmental study is well underway.

“The local communities can rest assured that the change to Queensland Hydro is in name only, and the current project team will continue to work closely with the local community in the same open and genuine way it has been since last year.”

Save the Mary River Co ordinating Group president Glenda Pickersgill said the hydro project is a topical issue in the community.

“The Borumba hydro project is being proposed as one of the linchpins of the SuperGrid before the project feasibility studies have been completed.”

Ms Pickersgill said there are significant risks in “put ting eggs in the one basket with Borumba and the SuperGrid”.

“The microgrid concept and battery technology (on buildings) are improving rapidly and have benefits of making more resilient communities in the long term without the destruction and risks attached to dams and high voltage power lines.”

Ms Pickersgill said there are many concerns that are being voiced at the informa

Mr Gwynne said over 100 people attended drop-in ses sions held by the Borumba project team in mid-July, “building on similar levels of community interest at previous drop-in sessions held in December 2021 and April 2022”.

“The Borumba project team held a new round of community drop-in sessions in Imbil and Gympie in mid-July for the local com munity to get updates from the project team and learn more about progress on the proposed project.”

Mr Gwynne said the project team had received valuable feedback from the community, including through the drop-in sessions and the project stakeholder reference group.

“Currently, we are busy completing the environmen tal, social, economic, and engineering studies that support the detailed analyt ical study which is due for completion in early 2023.

“We also have been con ducting a community survey – with two focus areas on recreation and transmission connections – which closed on October 2.

“The survey will assist the Borumba project team to learn what facilities and experiences stakeholders value at the lake and what stakeholders love most about the region.

“Outcomes from the survey will also inform the detailed transmission connection in vestigations being undertak en for the Borumba project.”

The next drop-in sessions are planned for late Novem ber and will be advertised closer to the date.

Commonwealth Bank Regional General Manager, Kylie Hall, said the decision came following a significant decline in transactions over a five-year period.

"We regularly review our branches across Australia to help us make informed decisions on where to open new branches, where to renovate or upgrade exist ing branches, and in some instances where to close branches.

"After a recent review, we made the difficult decision to permanently close our Tewantin branch which has had a 75 per cent drop in transactions over the five years before the coronavi rus pandemic."

Ms Hall said all the staff

have been redeployed.

"I can confirm that all Tewantin staff have roles, with some team members relocating to our Noosa branch."

Ms Hall said they recog nise some customers prefer over-the-counter service and there are branches at Noosa Heads, Coolum, Nambour and Maroochy dore.

“We've found 34 per cent of customers from Tewantin are already visiting these other branches.”

For Cooroy customers, the Tewantin branch was the closest branch for faceto-face banking following the closure of the Cooroy Commonwealth Bank branch in 2019.

“We understand this change may affect the way some of our customer's

TOES were tapping and tails are wagging after a fundraiser at Cooroy RSL earlier this month raised nearly $1,500 for charity Smart Pups.

Through raffle ticket sales at the event which featured headline act The Hillbilly Goats, Smart Pups fundraised $1,460.35 to help with raising, training and the general upkeep of dogs in their training program

Dogs’ spokesperson said, “As a not-for-profit charity organisation based on the Sunshine Coast, Smart Pups relies on generous donations to raise and train our Smart Pups assistance dogs for special needs children.

“Our goal is to improve the quality of life of children with special needs by training as sistance dogs with task-specific skills. Smart Pups have a profound effect on the

everyday lives of children with special needs and their families. Smart Pups trains autism assistance dogs, seizure response dogs, diabetic alert dogs, and mobility assistance dogs.”

Smart Pups Assistance Dogs recently moved into their new purpose-built training facility in Verrierdale. Since moving, staff are working to grow their foster and volunteer programs.

THE second annual Oktoberfest in Cooroy was a fabelhaf event with nearly double the number of attendees.

Approximately 4,000 people attended the free family fun day at Saw & Mill on October 1 to enjoy Oktoberfest music, German food, beer and sweets, free kids’ entertainment, games and competitions.

Saw & Mill manager Kimberly Bateman said they cannot get over the incredible turnout.

“Last year we thought around 2,000 to 2,500

attended. This year, we predict there were about 4,000.”

Kimberly said it was a fabulous day with lots of fun had by all.

“The German Oktoberfest show band really engaged the crowd and had everyone dancing.

“The jumping castle and animal farm were popular with the kids, and the hot dog eating competition and stein races also drew big crowds.

“We sold over 350 pork knuckles and there were German Bakehouse tra-

ditional German hotdogs everywhere.

“Over $2,000 was raised for charity. Hoofbeats had a stand and money from the lucky door entry raffle and money went to Hoofbeats, Pink October and LifeLine.”

While Saw & Mill’s bowling green won’t be transformed into a German-themed wonderland again for another year, the restaurant has launched its lawn bowls and Friday night lights buffet, running until 14 November.

fit for both organisations.

“Cooroy is a fantastic town and well located to service local developers and the community in their architec tural and project manage ment needs.”

ERVM is a privately owned project manage ment consultancy offering personalised, flexible, and bespoke services to a wide range of clients.

“Our team offers a wealth of experience from different countries, backgrounds, building types and sizes, approaches and disciplines, with a strong focus on com mercial returns and increas ing the value of a project in every stage of delivery,” Chris said.

“With cost escalation, trade and labour short ages and supply chain disruptions, ERVM is able to assist and guide clients through each phase from design, planning approval, contractor engagement and construction whilst mini mising risk to the client's financial investment and ensuring the finished project meets quality, time and budget expectations.”

Bendigo Bank goes green

WHEN national project management company, Engine Room VM (ERVM), decided to expand with a physical presence on the Sunshine Coast, they chose Cooroy as their office location.

ERVM Associate Direc tor – Queensland, Chris Egan, has been engaged to head up the new office, which they share with local business WMK Architects in

Maple Street.

Chris said ERVM has grown organically since its inception in 2009, with new offices opening as the business and opportunities arose.

“ERVM has worked for a number of years with WMK Architects so when they opened their office in Cooroy and offered us the opportunity to share their space it seemed the perfect

Chris said while they are locally based, ERVM has the benefit of nationwide coverage enabling their team to offer a personal service to clients wher ever their project may be located.

“We are always happy to provide advice and assis tance to assist clients no matter the size or stage of a project.”

Chris said with the con struction industry experienc ing unprecedented volatility, ERVM can guide clients through each phase of the project delivery process.

ABOUT

Chris has been working in construction and project management for the past 20 years both nationally and internationally in most sec tors and will be available at the Cooroy office to assist local residents and devel opers with all their project management needs.

“Being the point of contact, I will see these projects through from start to com pletion.”

Chris, who lives in Woom bye, said he is excited by this opportunity to grow their team and company within the region.

“Cooroy is a lovely area; it's a fabulous place to be based. I’m excited to open our office here.”

Chris can be found at 12a Maple Street, Cooroy or by calling 0410 571 554 or emailing chris.egan@ engineroomvm.com.

COOROY’S community bank has gone green.

Bendigo Bank’s Cooroy branch in Maple Street has had 48 solar panels installed on the roof.

Local solar provider and installer, SALT Solar said the “whopping 19.92 kW system” is estimated to fully cover the annual cost of electricity and “see the company effectively pay off the system in four years”.

“The solar system will

generate significant envi ronmental benefits includ ing avoiding the burning of approximately 11,494 kg of coal per year.

“The financial savings mean the Cooroy community branch of Bendigo Bank can give more funds back to local projects.”

ENTRY,

NOOSA Council is about to give its Corporate Plan an overhaul. The new plan will provide a 2023–2028 blueprint for the shire. We’ll be running a series of community workshops, an online survey, and sessions with industry to ensure we get a good cross-section of input. While legislation requires councils to develop corporate plans, it’s also an opportunity to set a direc tion for the organisation for the next five years and will help guide council’s decisions every day and outline key strategic issues or projects that council will prioritise and advocate for on behalf of the community. Please provide feedback via Your Say Noosa: yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au

From 5 October, every Wednesday between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, council will have a JP volunteer onsite at the Tewantin Council Chambers to provide JP services to the local community. You’ll find them at a desk on level 2 in the foyer and bookings are not required so if you are in need of a JP please make use of this service.

September 2022 was the three-year anniversa

ry of the start of the 2019 bushfires that impacted Peregian Beach, Cooroi bah and Noosa North Shore. Three years on, residents affected by the 2019 bushfires have told of their experiences in a new short film documenting the disaster's impact. The film will feature in Get Ready Month campaigns and other local disaster preparedness education efforts. The film reminds us to reflect on how quickly and furiously the fires took hold and consider what steps we should take to ensure we are prepared should disaster strike again. Be prepared. Make a bush fire survival plan. Council has invested significantly over the past three years in measures to prevent a repeat of the 2019 fires. There’s been a boost in funding for bushfire resil ience measures such as more controlled burns and greater trail maintenance, and council has appointed an in-house officer to help keep Noosa safe from bushfires. In addition, the continuation of the second year of our bushfire levy focusing on ongoing work in trail maintenance is making our shire disaster resilient.

But we can all be ready and be prepared so keep a look out for our upcoming campaigns which will focus on disaster resilience and preparedness.

Finally, over the past month, I, along with my other fellow South East Qld Council of Mayors, ventured to Canberra to visit Parliament House. It was the first opportunity we had had to visit since the election of the Albanese Government. Over two days we met with 18 ministers, senators, shadow ministers, senior advisors for the PM and Treasurer and Leader of the Opposition. Topics discussed included natural disasters, climate change, the importance of skilled mi gration, transport infrastruc ture, housing affordability and how councils can bid on the Housing Futures Fund. The Brisbane 2032 Games present an enormous opportunity for all levels of government to respond in a coordinated way to some of the many challenges our combined SEQ region is currently experiencing. It’s important that Noosa has a seat at that table.

Until next month, stay safe. Clare

EACH day spent represent ing the people of the Noosa electorate, I’m reminded of the incredible values of community and service that are so representative of who we are! Watching the sun go down over our Noosa River was a wonderful way to say goodbye to and commemo rate a Noosa legend ‘Eddy’, who spent decades keeping our waterways clean. My congratulations and the deep gratitude of the Noosa community go to Mr John Percey JP (Qual) for his fifty years of service as a justice of the peace, and to whom I recently awarded a Distinguished Service Award. Thank you to all our amaz ing, selfless volunteers!

A recent information session hosted by advo cates opposing commercial activities in National Parks

was respectful and well run, and we look forward to pro viding further updates on the Cooloola Great Walk Project at Noosa 360 via www.san dybolton/noosa360, includ ing the expected relocation of proposed campsites P and N once Kabi Kabi have decided regarding. Congratulations to all on another successful Great Noosa Trail Walk; the smiles and camaraderie amongst walkers said it all. Make sure you book early for next year! Roadworks and assess ments by the Department of Transport and Main Roads continue on state routes to address damage from floods, wet weather and excessive heavy haulage vehicles. Pot hole and pavement repairs on Kin Kin Road have been a maintenance priority, as well as capital works proj

ects, and I know the delays and at times sleep disruption they cause is very frustrating for residents.

The dedicated turning lane on Cooroy Noosa Road into Sivyers Road, a former accident hotspot, is now complete, and speed reviews are being consid ered on a couple of state roads in response to resident concerns.

For more information on all of these, as well as much, much more, head over to Noosa 360 at www.sandy bolton.com/noosa360 where you can find relevant posts, some over multiple years, by simply typing your topic into the search bar.

Until next time, enjoy the beautiful spring weather, and each other!

Sandy

I WAS in Cairns recently for the LGAQ Conference where councils across Queensland debated the state's future policies.

Noosa Council presented five submissions and I pre sented my motion (endorsed by council July 2022), which calls on the state govern ment to review and invest in the reuse of wastewater by exploring the added value of this scarce resource.

Water scarcity, extreme weather events and popula tion growth require efficient water management. Water is not the infinite resource we imagine it to be; it is limited.

Wastewater reuse is a solution for the future to combat water scarcity. Its recovery and reuse must happen.

We therefore need to

create a state and a water industry that supports less wasteful distribution and use of water, as well as water treatment and recycling.

At the moment we recy cle approximately 15 per cent of treated wastewater statewide. In Noosa, less than one per cent of treated wastewater is being reused.

The remainder is being dumped into our oceans and rivers, causing environmen tal damage, pollution and erosion.

The full potential of waste water is under-exploited and under-valued. The potential and benefits for wastewater recycling in Queensland is huge.

If we want to take the waste out of wastewater and out of our oceans, we need upgrades to wastewater

treatment plants. These are a very large investment for councils and water author ities.

By calling on the state to look at additional uses of recycled wastewater that values the protection of local ecosystems and provides suitable data, we enable councils and water authori ties and retailers to produce business cases for waste water reuse and treatment plant upgrades.

We have a solution –wastewater reuse – and now we must overcome the hurdle of cost. Because the bigger cost to the state and Noosa is running out of time.

Amelia

Cheque to help Permaculture Noosa grow

Birdwatching topic at NPA October forum

PERMACULTURE Noosa has been surprised with a cheque for $50,000 from Bendigo Bank Cooroy.

Directors and staff of Com munity Bank Cooroy surprised committee member Sandra Guy with the cheque at Permaculture Noosa’s October club night.

Permaculture Noosa members have been fundraising since 2020 to build a pavilion on their block in Emerald Street, Cooroy. Noosa Council provided the land and a grant towards the pavilion’s con crete slab but more funds were needed to complete the project.

Sandra said the pavilion will be used for club meetings, gather ings and workshops.

“We envision the pavilion will also be available for other local groups to enjoy, such as play groups, a PTSD support group, for exercise classes and morning teas for people perhaps experi encing isolation.”

Community Bank Cooroy oper ators Sunshine Coast Commu nity Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) chair Trish Radge said they believe their values are aligned with those of Perma culture Noosa’s, and Bendigo Bank’s purpose is to feed into the

prosperity of their customers and communities, not off it.

“As directors of Community Bank Cooroy we love identifying projects that support our cus tomers and the community we operate within.

“The directors of Community Bank Cooroy love that Permacul ture Noosa is supporting the peo ple of Cooroy and beyond. They are educating and sharing ideas around the production of food, seed and plant sharing. They are helping to build healthy minds, bodies and relationships.

“Big cheques like this remind everyone that your banking mat ters. Who you bank with matters. When you bank with your local Community Bank, up to 80 per cent of company profits go back into the community, allowing SCCFSL to support projects like the new Permaculture Noosa pavilion.

“To date, SCCFSL has given back over $2 million to the com munities we serve,” said Trish.

PAPER Angels are holding a Christmas Charity Day at Cooroy RSL on Saturday 12 November from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Supporting the Mater Mothers’ Bereavement Support Program and other similar programs in a variety of Queensland hospitals, organiser Gaye Schrader said this annual event is a fun-packed day of card-making.

“We raise funds to provide footprint cards for the pediatric bereavement unit at SCUH. We provide all materials for keepsake cards for the parents and grandparents of stillborn babies.

HISTORICAL photos from the Cooroy Rag and The Re view from 1984 to 1996 will be displayed at the Heritage Centre in Cooroy.

Cooroy Noosa Genealogi cal and Historical Research Inc president Tom Heitmann said this newly digitised collection of photos, scanned and archived for the com munity to use for research, will be available for public viewing at the Heritage Centre’s open day on Friday 4 November from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

“The event is free to attend and morning tea will be served. Attendees will be able to search the new database using keywords

such as names or publica tion dates, and files can be downloaded for a gold coin donation.

“The Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group Inc. are able to present these ar chived and historical photos, that were published in the Cooroy Rag and The Review from 1984 to 1996, thanks to the generosity of a Cooroy Rag Community Grant presented to the centre in 2021,” Tom said.

The Heritage Centre is at 17 Emerald Street Cooroy. For more information phone (07) 3129 0356 or visit www. genealogy-noosa.org.au.

A CENT sale to raise money for the Anglican Parish of Cooroora, and Cooroy Family Support Centre and Sunnykids, is being held on 26 November.

Organiser Carol Buckley said last year’s cent auction was so successful, they’re hoping to replicate that success again this year and share the proceeds with Sunnykids.

“Sunnykids is a very

worthwhile organisation, supporting families through domestic violence.

Anything we can do to help we will.

“We’re only a small church and try to do a fundraiser once a year and this year we will be sharing the proceeds between the church and Sunnykids.”

Doors for the cent sale at the Church of the Holy Nativity, on the corner of Miva

“Our event at Cooroy RSL is a fun-packed day of card-making and raffles, with prizes generously donated by Stampin’ Up! and local businesses.

“Cost is $80 and includes leaves of the Holly Stamp Set and all materials needed for lots of fun projects taught by our team of demonstrators, plus afternoon tea. Lunch is available for purchase.”

Attendees are asked to BYO a plastic kit of adhesives, bone folder, scissors, clear blocks, etc. and bring along some cash to buy tickets for the fabulous raffle prizes.

RSVP and payment are required by Friday 21 October. To book, contact Gaye Schrader on 0400 384 562.

Street and Cooroy Noosa Road, will open at 10 am.

“The sale won’t start until 11 am so this will give everyone an hour to get their seat, buy tickets and have a good look around.

“We’ll have a break halfway through and some lunch and continue from there,” Carol said.

For more information on the cent sale, contact Carol on 0408 731 777.

TECH SUPPORTS

LOCAL FIRE PREP

Simulation technology from the USA is set to give Noosa residents a confronting look at how bushfires might behave if they break out close to home.

Council’s aim with the new Simtable technology is to educate residents on the risks bushfires pose to their immediate neighbourhoods and to encourage locals to be prepared.

“With this tech we can model how different hazards such as fires, smoke and even floods might behave.

Knowing how these hazards are influenced by local terrain, vegetation types and weather conditions such as wind speed and direction is key for residents to better prepare for different events,” Disaster Management Officer James Ulyate said.

“Knowing what you face, and the best way to respond – well before disaster strikes – will help keep you safe when the time comes.”

Council will begin community workshops in coming months to show residents how fires, as well as floods, might move through their immediate streets and neighbourhoods.

Noosa is the first Queensland council to adopt the Simtable technology, which uses a sand table and computer to overlay hazard projections over local mapping and terrain.

Council funded the technology with support from the Federal Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Grants and the 2019 Cat C Bushfire fund.

SURVEY TO HELP GUIDE FUTURE DECISION-MAKING

Input from Noosa residents will be vital to ensuring the corporate plan continues to meet the local community’s needs and future aspirations for the shire

The 2023-2028 Corporate Plan is considered critical in finding a balance between improving the Noosa lifestyle and guiding Council decisions over the next five years.

CEO Scott Waters said hearing from the community is vital in formulating the plan.

“This new plan will look to have a focus on rebuilding

our culture and continuing to deliver the projects and meet the needs and future aspirations of our community,” he said.

All councils must provide a corporate plan every five years.

The community has until Sunday October 23 to complete the survey currently on the Your Say Noosa website –yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au

“This is the first phase of the community consultation, so we really hope residents provide input,” Mr Waters said.

“Considering the significant changes and challenges we have seen, particularly in the Hinterland, we want this plan to support an enriched and sustainable future for the shire,” he said.

A key part of developing the plan is to review and renew Council’s corporate goals so they are in line with Council’s new direction and organisational culture. Check out the survey before Sunday, October 23, or simply provide feedback by emailing corporateplan@noosa.qld. gov.au.

ELECTRIC MOWER HELPS SLASH EMISSIONS

A new electric ride-on mower is not only cutting the grass at Noosa Botanic Gardens, it’s also helping slash emissions from Council’s mowing operations.

“The more petrol-powered plant we can swap out for newer, more efficient electric alternatives the better it is for the environment,” says Carbon Reduction Project Officer, Annie Nolan.

“The benefits are even greater where we’re able to draw the power needed to recharge the equipment from the sun via solar,” she said.

“So far we’ve installed more than 630kw of solar across 16 buildings.”

Council has already transitioned many of its traditionally petrol-powered tools to battery alternatives, with the mower one of the largest new electric tools now in use, in support of Council’s 2026 net-zero emissions target.

Gardens staff member Tahlia Walker-Bonney said the new

machine – which plugs in to a wall outlet to charge – was easy to handle and quick to get the job done, plus quieter than traditional mowers which made it a good fit for the gardens.

“Electric machinery and vehicles are the way of the future and Council is pleased to lead by example for the community in this space,” Ms

Nolan said.

Recently, Council upgraded two of its fleet vehicles to all-electric cars, adding to the six hybrid vehicles already on the road as part of Council’s fleet.

The new all-electric Hyundai IONIQ and MG ZS replaced a diesel-powered ute and a petrol-powered car.

RESILIENT

IN BRIEF

Bridge nears completion

As work continues on rebuilding Noosa after the February floods, it’s important residents take a few minutes and make plans for the storm and bushfire season.

October is Get Ready month and it’s a good time to clean up your home and yard.

A few simple steps can make all the difference:

• Have a household emergency plan.

• Pack an emergency kit.

• Clean gutters, check roofs and tidy up the yard.

• Check insurance is up to date. Council’s Disaster Management Officer, James Ulyate, said being prepared can help reduce the impacts of disasters.

“We know the weather is becoming more unpredictable but improving our preparedness makes such a huge difference when disaster strikes,” he said.

Recently, Council staff held a

number of planning workshops with emergency services, and community groups to prepare the draft Disaster Management Plan.

“These discussions helped highlight key risks and better understand how our community is prepared for a potential

disaster.”

Visit the Disaster Dashboard at disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au, download the Noosa Emergency Action Guide and subscribe to Noosa Alert. Council’s website has all the information on what to do during and after an event. Visit noosa.qld.gov.au.

Like a mechano set, the key structural pieces are in place for the Cooroy Belli Creek Road bridge.

Sixteen precast concrete deck units have been installed, with work now focusing on the reinforced concrete slabs to support the road pavement, guardrails and tidying up the approaches to the bridge.

Project Manager Jaspre Outram said completion is on track for early November, pending favourable weather.

“Our crews have made good progress in recent weeks and have about another four weeks on site,” he said.

Infrastructure Services Director Larry Sengstock said Council has had a strong focus on renewing bridges in the hinterland.

“This is the third hinterland bridge replaced as part of the jointly funded Bridge Renewal Program with the Australian Government,” he said.

“The program has injected over $5 million in vital bridge infrastructure to the hinterland in the past 18 months,” Mr Sengstock said.

mostly attaching to the lining of the stomach. This part is so gross. They hatch into half to three-quarters of an inch-long larva [13 to 19 mm], with narrow hooked mouths, which then allows them to attach to the lining of our stomachs. With them doing so, they then dig into the tissues causing all sorts of problems. So really, we are a host for the bot fly.

After eight to 10 months of hanging out in us, the larvae eventually pass through us through our manure, pupate in our manure for three to five weeks, then emerge as adults and are ready to start the cycle all over again. The key to help protect us from this is to disrupt the cycle.

HAY, there! Let’s talk about those horrible bot flies. Yep, those annoying, buzzing insects that love to chase me and my equine friends around the paddock.

Early spring is about the time they love to lay their eggs, up to 1000 of those small yellow ones, onto our legs, neck, nose and muzzle. Within five days, they become itchy which makes us scratch them with our teeth and lick them. This

is their cunning way to make them hatch.

The stimulation of us doing this makes them hatch into maggots. Yes, terrible little blighters, as they eventually – not all but some – will manage to crawl into our mouths or are ingested and bury themselves in the tongue or gums of our mouth and will wait for approximately one month.

They eventually work their way into our stomachs,

As much as most of us hate the worming paste it is a must, as well as removing the eggs from our coats and legs before we ingest them.

Mid-winter is a great time for de-worming while the bot fly is maturing in the digestive tract. For our health and less stress for yourself, it’s pretty simple to stay away from these buzzing preda tors.

Until next time, stay safe and ride safe.

Donuts to remind women to breast screen

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast has part nered with bakeries and coffee shops to get the mes sage out and remind women to screen.

“Do-nut forget to screen your breasts” is the message and BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Health Promotion Officer Gillian Duffy said whether women are grabbing a quick coffee on the way to work or picking up a sweet treat for the family, there will be ‘Do-Nuts’ there to remind them to screen.

“Most women are so busy organising families and looking after other people that they often forget to take the time to look after themselves.

“We are always looking for new ways to remind women about the importance of regular breast cancer screening.

“Breast cancer is still the most common cancer diagnosed among Queensland women, with one in seven women being diagnosed by the age of 85. As there is no known way of preventing

breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible,” Ms Duffy said.

A breast screen can find cancer before it can be felt or seen by a woman or her doctor. When breast cancer is found early, it allows a woman to have more op tions around the treatment of the cancer and provides a better overall outcome.

BreastScreen Queensland provides free breast cancer screening for women 40 years and over. The ap pointments take less than 30 minutes and doctors’

referrals are not required.

Free screening services are located at Noosaville and Gympie and until 9 November, BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile ser vice will be at Opal Street, Cooroy (opposite Cooroy Saddlery).

To make an appointment at any of the BreastScreen Queensland screening sites call 13 20 50 or visit the BreastScreen Queensland website.

“It’s free and it’s quick, so what are you waiting for? Do-nut put off your breast screen any longer,” Ms Duffy said.

“There are two divisions: Tier One and Tier Two. The Cooroy team will be hoping to go one further this sea son, after making the tier one finals for the last two years, since the women’s team started.”

Players from the Gympie region will be joining the

Cooroy team this year while Tewantin-Noosa will be fielding a tier two side as it re-enters the women’s competition after a couple of years’ break.

Games started on 9 October. The competition is open for women aged 14 and over. Anyone interest ed in playing can contact Brett at Cooroy-Eumundi on 0458 183 418 or Ben Shaw at Tewantin-Noosa on 0406 957 554.

IF you’re looking for a beautiful authentic Queenslander that is completely renovated (on the inside) right in the heart of the Mary Valley, then look no further. This 1,373 m2 block is nestled in the main street and is just close enough to town but far enough away from the hustle bustle of the quaint village of Kenilworth.

The first thing you will notice as you walk into this beautiful home is the breathtaking views from both bi-fold windows in the kitchen and living areas. The neighbouring paddocks

of horses, mountains and massive 100-year-old fig trees lend themselves to the feeling of living in an old farmhouse in the country. On further inspection of this property, you will notice the tasteful renovations that have taken place; whether it be the extra room that was added, the two modern bathrooms or the barn doors, there are beautiful additions to love around every corner. Storage is ample with loads of cupboard space and a huge laundry area, even including a study nook.

While modern features have been added, period features have remained including original polished timber floorboards and VJ wall panelling. There is scope to continue these renovations as the house was lifted high enough to legally build underneath. The options are endless!

Out the back is a rustic old farm shed and room enough for a pool. Just a short walk to the world-famous Kenilworth bakery, cafes and shops, this home is conveniently located and has so much potential to extend.

Monthly Market Wrap Up

With Sirah Robb Director and Principal of Wythes Real Estate

IT has been a month of big news for the real estate industry. The biggest news of all being the shelving of our state governments

For Sale

THIS stunning, near-new townhouse is positioned amongst a collection of five modern townhouses in the heart of the seaside township of Tewantin, with shops, transport, medical and the famous Noosa

new land tax legislation that would have seen property owners with an investment in Queensland charged land tax on their entire portfolio across the country, removing previous exemptions. Queensland was the first state to introduce this legislation and it was anticipated other states would follow suit but when New South Wales recently refused to share information required to implement the tax, cracks started to appear. Our governing body, the Real Estate Institute

of Queensland, had also been lobbying heavily to have this legislation overturned, arguing the additional tax would disincentivize lessors to keep Queensland rental properties or purchase more, further compounding the housing shortage our state is experiencing. At a time when the overseas migration threshold has been increased to 195,000 to attract skilled labour, equating to 75,000 more properties needed per year, yet $575 million allocated to affordable

housing by the federal government, which equates to only 6,000 dwellings per year for the next five years, the shelving of this legislation is welcomed.

In what seemed like a knee-jerk reaction to the land tax controversy, the state government recently announced a blanket approval on granny flats being used as rentals. This will free up more accommodation for housing and is news welcomed by property owners and tenants alike. But is it enough?

Property analyst, Simon Pressley from Propertyology, doesn’t

think so. He believes more will be needed to boost investment to house the 35% of our population who rent. He anticipates the result of such stimulus will not only be more investors providing much needed housing but it is also likely to create more competition between investors, leading to an investor driven property boom with double digit growth as soon as within 12 months. His observations are that the smart investors are buying up now before prices surge again.

Anecdotally, our office has seen 10.6% growth in our average sale price for the September quarter.

Our sales strategies are proving effective for our sellers, with not only our average sale price remaining strong but also our average days on market being well under the market average for Noosa Hinterland suburbs. It has never been more important to work with a proven agency that offers experience, strategic knowledge specific to your immediate area and the highest skilled agents with access to the largest volume of buyers. We are happy to say our clients are reaping the rewards of these benefits with us and achieving great outcomes.

THIS elegant home won Garth Chapman the Master Builders award for the most authentic Queenslander in 1994, and there is more to this property than just a stunning home that is peacefully and privately set on an all-usable 1.12 hectares or 2.8 acres.

The home is built in the traditional Queenslanderstyle wide butterfly stair case and is immaculately presented and meticulously maintained. There are multiple living areas inside and out. Ceiling fans, ducted air-conditioning, split-system air-conditioners and slow combustion wood fireplace provide all-year-round

comfort. Entry is via remote gates and doors into the double garage at the house plus a carport at the office, and more vehicle parking and storage and workshop areas under the house.

Even the kitchen has a view of Mt Cooroora and opens to outdoor areas and integrates seamlessly with the internal dining and living areas. Plenty of bench and cupboard space and a Masterchef’s delight: free-standing Belling oven with multiple ovens and gas cooktop, and of course there is a dishwasher and breakfast bar.

The office is a separate air-conditioned building with

its own entry away from the home, with visitor parking, its own visitor powder room and a gazebo, and a waiting area for clients.

The studio is an architectural style, and it has the wow factor on space and style. With ceiling fans, air-conditioning and a slow combustion woodfire heater, there is a kitchenette and spacious verandah. The possibilities are endless: a yoga studio, extended family retreat, or Airbnb.

The land is fully fenced for horses, with shelters and a shipping container for storing tack and feed. There is a dam and a quality bore.

Only a short walk from the house is also a beautiful flowing freshwater creek.

LOCATED within minutes from the heart of Amamoor sits this impressive 175+ acre parcel of useable farmland with a solid family home, machinery sheds, improved pastures and direct access to Amamoor Creek.

This rare combination of useable land along with approximately 60 acres of creek flats with access to sandy beach areas off the creek, offers the perfect potential for a tourist des tination. Ideal for powered and serviced camping sites on the creek side, as well as being an ideal location for canoeing and fishing. Although the main en trance to the property is off

Diamondfield Road, there is also access through the north of the property from Busby Street, which is the main street of the Amamoor township.

Privately positioned in the middle of the property, the brick family home offers uninterrupted views over the farm in every direction.

Attached to the home is a double remote lockup garage with additional workspace and storage.

Separate to the home is a large concreted machinery shed totalling 270 m2 with a wall height of 4.5 metres.

The shed is fully powered with both two- and threephase available and is workable any time day or

night with floodlighting. Also located on the property is a secondary open machinery shed, dairy buildings and timber cattle yards.

Water is provided to the paddocks via a solar pump that feeds water to a header tank which is then connected to seven troughs on the property. Water is delivered by four-inch underground mains. Water is also accessible from Amamoor and Diamondfield Creeks (with the property including a 15 ha water licence from Amamoor Creek). There are also six dams (three of which are home to Murray River Cod), as well as a bore pump.
