If you are reading this, the Mayans were wrong. It’s become comical how frequently the doomsday prediction rumors arise. At least three times in the last year, the world was predicted to end after a certain date (and that doesn’t count this year’s election). There are TV shows premised solely on the lives of people that are prepping for “doomsday.” But then again when some of the most popular TV shows include Honey Boo Boo, Toddlers and Tiaras or anything with a Kardashian, maybe that mix of garbage crammed through cables should be a strong warning indicator that we are near the end. On the flip side of this apocalyptic talk, there are people like our cover feature, Will and Lisa Hawkins, whose success in life is founded on faith, which directly counterbalances the endless stream of demagoguery force-fed to us. Their story is a great reminder the power of faith and determination – it’s carried them both to great places and I’m certain you’ll enjoy the read. So, here’s a toast to optimism for an exceptional year in 2013 and also for the first ever welcome letter that included the Mayans, Honey Boo Boo and the Kardashians- and definitely the last. Happy New Year,

GOLF

Interview by Marc DeWall

For those of you that have followed the career of Cordillera Ranch member and PGA Tour player Jimmy Walker, you know there have been a few ups and downs along the way. What is not hard to notice is the continued steady improvement each year that Jimmy has shown that has led to a career that is one of the most promising on the PGA Tour today. I sat down and visited with Jimmy last month to discuss a number of different things and learn more about some of the keys to his success and continued improvement.

24 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

E TH BS U CL

Jimmy, tell us something about your life on the PGA Tour that the average golfer might not know? “Actually, it is probably not as glamorous as one might think. Traveling each and every week can be very difficult. However, I still set my own schedule and make his my own flight arrangements. The most difficult travel is traveling to the West Coast because it is hard to catch a flight back to San Antonio because of the time difference.” How has family life and a new baby changed things for you? “The biggest change is the new sense of calm that I feel and that carries over to the golf course. Things can get hectic at home and on the road, but there is a certain peace that comes with having a family and knowing that even though it might be hectic at the time, everything is going to be ok in the end.” Jimmy continues, “For the last couple of years my family has started traveling in a big RV Bus from tournament to tournament. With a second child on the way due early next year and beginning construction on our new house in Cordillera Ranch, traveling this way gives me the most time with my family with my hectic schedule.” What were some of the keys to your great play in 2012? “Familiarity with everything makes a huge difference. After being out on tour for a few years I know the golf courses better, where to stay, where to eat, etc. This allows more time to prepare each week. I also hired a new agent this past year that has opened a few new doors and created a few new opportunities that otherwise might not have developed.” How has working with world renowned swing instructor Butch Harmon changed your game? “I really like Butch’s direct style – he told me exactly what I needed to do. We developed a game plan and what steps to take to get there. I trust Butch, knowing that he has helped so many great players along the way.” The PGA Tour has recently announced plans to eliminate the Qualifying School. How does the change in Tour Policy affect players trying to earn their card and the PGA Tour in general? “The biggest reason for the change is to protect the sponsors and field quality. Numbers show that better players come from the Web.com Tour. Web.com truly needs to be the developmental tour for the PGA Tour.” What was the most important or best round you played last year? “The last 20 holes of the Wyndham Championship were probably the most important this year. I birdied 17 and 18 and hung in there after not playing well for most of the 3rd round. I shot 4-under in the final round to finish 4th. This validates the work I was doing with Butch. Jimmy continues, “I played very well in the PGA Championship and would have had a top 5 finish if I would’ve had a couple of better breaks in the last round. I also shot 63 in the final round in the Frys.com Open. It’s always fun to shoot 63 on a Sunday!” What do you think it will take to get your breakthrough PGA win? “I was 57 over par on the par 4s in 2012. I need to play the Par 4s better this year. I also need to understand par is still a good score on Par 4s. I don’t have to birdie every Par 4. Who knows, I might’ve already won if I had played the Par 4s closer to even this past year.”

I’LL FIX IT By Ben Schooley :: Photography By West Vita

One man’s passion for his business, his employees, and his family help him to grow one of Texas’ most successful service companies. “I’m originally from El Paso. It’s the town that Texas doesn’t claim, and Mexico doesn’t want,” Will Hawkins laughs. He and his wife Lisa, along with their three daughters, couldn’t be further from the deserts of El Paso as they recount the adventures that have brought them to Cordillera Ranch. Hawkins, who was homeless and lived in his car for a period, eventually went on to build one of Texas’ most successful service companies, Will Fix It, which sold for millions in 2007. However, the love of people, and business, has him back at the grind. Born in El Paso, Hawkins didn’t learn English until he was five. With Spanish-speaking help around the family home, Hawkins soaked up the language and didn’t learn English until he entered formal schooling. After his father passed away when Hawkins was only two, his mother eventually re-married when he was four. Unfortunately, Hawkins endured a very unique upbringing. “My dad passed when I was only two. My mom died when I was 13. My stepdad remarried, and then he died shortly thereafter when I was 15. So I finished out high school with his new wife, my stepmom. It was tough to say the least.” And while it was hard, it seemed to have taught Hawkins that each day was to be experienced to the fullest. “I never got in big trouble, but I was definitely a mischievous one. I had no curfews. I didn’t know any different, and so that was just the way life was. It was only until later in life that you realize maybe you missed out on things. I was big into the outdoors, so El Paso was a cool place for me; there was just tons to do. I was pretty free spirited in just living for today, as opposed to down the road. The day after graduation I drove to Austin, and my stepsister lived there. I was just going to walk up the steps and register for college. I took a few classes at ACC, and tried to focus on schooling as best I could.” While Hawkins was focused on his schooling, his future was less clear. “Somebody just told me one day I should be an engineer, and I just said ok. I didn’t even know what that was, but sure enough, I majored in Electrical Engineering.” While in Austin, Hawkins began working with his stepsister’s boyfriend in plumbing. However, no sooner than that began, his stepsister and her boyfriend married and took a month off. “I headed back to El Paso. Since they were going to take some time off, I had to work, so I headed back. I’ve had a job since I was 14, and I knew I could find work quickly back home. So I worked at the Whataburger for a while, and then moved to the K-Mart automotive department.” While Hawkins might have been working, he was still broke. “When I moved back to El Paso, I was good friends with this family. At one point I was sleeping in truck stops and was homeless. I had a job and would drive down to the Petro, take a shower, and I did that for 90 days. This family took me under their wing. The parents took a liking to me. They would invite me over for dinner. I was a mess – drinking and staying out all hours. They would invite me to church and I would say no. So instead they would invite me for dinner, but told me I had to go to church first. I had no knowledge of the Bible. I’m in this service with these people, thinking about lunch or where I was going to sleep that night, and the light just came on in an instant. You could have a relationship with Christ, and He wanted to know me. They shared this scripture, and I felt this huge weight come off of me. “

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 29

30 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

Luckily for Hawkins, his brother-in-law returned and rescued him from homelessness in the form of a job back in Austin. “In ’83, he called me and I went back to being a plumbing apprentice. I was with him until 1990, and then I moved down to San Antonio. I got together with a contractor that was doing a lot of the base housing on the military bases, so it was keeping me busy.” New in town, and not knowing many people, Hawkins looked to the church for help. “I was attending Castle Hills First Baptist. I started going to the Singles class about this time as well. At each class, the newcomers would stand up and introduce themselves. Lisa didn’t stand up, but I did. She was wearing a blue sapphire dress, but she swears it was purple. I instantly thought she was beautiful.” Eventually, Hawkins got up the nerve to call her up. “I asked her if she wanted to do something on Saturday night, and she instantly asked, ‘As friends, right?’” Lisa adds, “I was not going to date the plumber. I didn’t want to go out with him. He showed up with flowers and I thought ‘Oh man, this is going to be bad.’ He took me out, and I was surprised to find I was

having a really good time. He took me to the Josephine Theatre, put his hand on my knee and electricity absolutely ran through me. I instantly was attracted to him. I had told God I’m going to let you pick out someone for me, but surely it’s not a plumber. Turns out, I was wrong and God was right.” Lisa had graduated from Baylor and was currently teaching, which turned out to be a profession she did not enjoy. Looking for an opportunity out, she found an interest in Mary Kay. “I prayed so hard for me to find something to get me out of teaching. My friend mentioned Mary Kay, and it just naturally fit my personality. In college, I surrendered my life to Christ, and I figured I would be a missionary. Instead, He got me into people’s houses to share Mary Kay, and then people start asking me stuff like ‘Why are you so happy?’ It’s a wonderful way for me to not only share my business, but to share my faith.” And that passion has also earned Lisa 6 Pink Cadillacs, an honor reserved for only the most elite in the organization. Hawkins fed off of Lisa’s passion for her own business, and strove to own his own operation, as well. “I had a Toyota

pickup, and I sold it to buy a box van. That was the beginning of my little company. Eventually we were running five vans out of our little house, and the Code Compliance people came by and were none too impressed!” Hawkins laughs. But from that moment, Will Fix It was born. He continues, “We moved the company out of the house and I ended up buying a commercial space, and we had as many as 50 vans going at one point.” Lisa jumps in, “Will’s motivation isn’t his own success, it’s the success of his guys. He would ask them, ‘What is your goal?’ and they would say ‘I want a new truck.’ He would then begin quizzing them about what color it is, what do the tires look like, what kind of interior, etc. He wanted them to envision their own success, and he just reveled in it. He would get so excited when one of his guys would buy a house. Will would run out and buy them a BBQ pit and just celebrate with them.” Will continues, “It was also a sense of accomplishment for me. I loved that I would show up and the kitchen would be flooded, and by the time I left, I was holding a plate of hot cookies. Helping people always brought me such a large amount of joy.”

And that joy was transferred to his employees and their performance. At one point Hawkins was spending $325,000 annually on advertising, and the company continued to explode with customers. With three daughters, Haley, 18, Faith, 14, and Gillian, 10 they began to look at places to raise them, and eventually they found their way to Boerne. Lisa says, “We had heard about the Geneva School, and so I came out to tour the facility. I signed up our children for the school the next day.” They quickly looked for homes closer to the school, and discovered Cordillera Ranch. Will adds, “One particular house was under construction and had a lot of problems. It had sat empty and incomplete for 20 months, and so it had mold in it. It worked out that I had just started a mold abatement company, so we were able to get it at a good price, work out the issues with the place, and we’ve been here ever since. And frankly, we just couldn’t be happier.” As Will Fix It continued to grow, so did its visibility, and ultimately, an offer was made on the company that was too good to turn down. “I sold it in 2007. Part of the deal involved me staying on board for a year, and working 80 hours per month. I quickly learned that if I worked my 80 hours in the first week or so, I didn’t have to come in at all the rest of the month, so that’s what I started doing,” Hawkins laughs. Once released from his commitment, Hawkins immediately returned to the industry and started Drain and Air Rescue in Austin. With a non-compete that just expired, Hawkins is also the owner of All-Pro Plumbing and Air Conditioning in San Antonio. Additionally, Hawkins is a co-owner of HB Southern Construction, as well as HB Trucking. “Will I slow down? Nah. I’ve been going on these mission trips to Morocco, Kenya, Africa, and a whole bunch of other places and helping them with their plumbing. We’ve been traveling a lot, and are just enjoying watching the girls grow up. I love my businesses, but I love my family even more. “ Lisa adds, “It’s like Will says – ‘I love to work, but I love to live even more.’ We try to follow that as much as we can. We also know that if you ask God to lead you, He leads you very well.”

Weddings

By Sarah J. Conklin You’ve met the love of your life and he’s popped the big question, “Will You Marry Me?” You say “Yes,” set a date, now what? “Where do I start?” Hire a Wedding Planner! The next few months are going to fly by and there will be a lot of questions and a lot of decisions to make. I have been in the hospitality, event business for almost 16 years. I began my career in the kitchen as a pastry chef in New York. From there I transitioned into the front of the house with the Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott resort brands. I loved the event side, especially working with brides and grooms on their big day. It is wonderful being a part of a family’s once in a lifetime event. The average wedding can take up to 80 dedicated hours to plan, and I have even spent up to 150 hours planning a wedding. Most brides are juggling full-time jobs and many responsibilities at home. The days of brides stopping everything to plan a wedding are long gone. In comes the Wedding Planner. A Wedding Planner or coordinator will help you weed through all of the bridal information out there. And there is a ton of it; with social media at an all time high it can be wedding overload. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with an amazing couple, Josh and Andrea Noble who married in September 2012. They made their wedding into the talk of the town hosting three days of events. My first meeting with Josh and Andrea was in May 2012. On that first meeting I really spent time talking to them on the feel they wanted for their wedding. Destinations, drama, elegance were all words that

Wedding Consultants or Coordinators: • Will put you in contact with vendors and organize your meetings • Put together day-of schedules • Are present the day of the wedding • Usually are not present at all vendor meetings The person or team that you choose will be responsible for one of the most important days of your life. Take the time to get to know them and allow them to get to know you and your groom. Do your research. Find out how many weddings they have worked on. What industry contacts do they have? Will they be present the day of your wedding? Many planners have teams or assistants that help them plan and execute the big day. Now that you have selected a planner, what should you expect? When I begin with a new couple I always sit with them and begin my research. What inspirations, ideas and dreams do you have for your day? Ideas and themes come from so much; family tradition, special vacation, or a favorite color. Create a story with those and work from there. Your planner will help you keep the look consistent from beginning to end. Once the overall look is determined the planning phase begins. First step… the budget. I always ask each couple, “What are your top three nonnegotiables?” This will ensure the bride and groom are on the same page and that we stay on track and put the money in the right areas. For some couples the food and beverage is the most important, for others it may be photography or flowers and décor. Some couples may disagree on this, it’s ok, your planner will help prioritize and keep everyone focused. The planning begins!! Your planner will contact all vendors and begin to set up meetings and acquire bids. Your planner should obtain vendor pricing and complete a cost analysis. It is the planner’s job to negotiate contracts and watch out for the best interest of their bride and groom. Strong industry connec-

tions come in handy during this phase as they can get you better pricing. Make sure you do not sign any contracts without your planner’s review. There can be a lot of fine print and you may sign yourself up for more expense than you realize. Your planner will also narrow down the vendors you will meet with, which may include the following: • Audio/Visual • Cake Designer & Baker • Ceremony Music • Officiant • Childcare Provider (if needed) • Cocktail Music • Dinner Reception & Dancing Music • Draping • Florist • Hair Stylist • Make-up Artist • Photographer • Hotel Room Blocks (Guest & Bridal Party) • Lighting • Linen • Furniture • Rental Items • Staging (if needed) • Stationary Company • Transportation (Guests, Bridal Party, Bride & Groom Departure) • Valet (if needed) • Videographer

Wedding Planners: • Meet with the couple and brings their dream to life from the first meeting to the fond farewell • Organize the team of vendors • Are often professionally trained

came into play. Over the next several months Andrea and I were able to plan an amazing event. They took full use of all The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch have to offer: concerts, ceremony, reception, brunch, transportation. Choosing the right planner or coordinator is extremely important. While similar, there is a difference between the titles among the wedding doers of the world. Make sure you hire the right person for your needs.

There is a lot of organizing in weddings and an organized planner is critical. A vendor checklist complete with cell phone numbers is a must and will stay with you till the end. The planning process is the most time consuming and can take weeks or months to complete. Show Time: Execution… A typical wedding day for a Wedding Planner starts at about 7 a.m. and ends around 2 a.m. the following morning. As a planner, I oversee all of the installation and setup. This is the time all of those handy and revised checklists and timelines are put to the test. A mentor of mine back when I started out in this industry taught me the 5 P’s: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Using this motto and running over and over the details ensures my team, my bride and groom and vendors have a smooth, perfect day. With all of the moving parts of the day, I always have at least one assistant, sometimes three depending on the style of wedding. Having a support team allows me to be with my bride, check in at the ceremony site, oversee the florist and décor team, make sure the food is on schedule and the groom is dressed all at the same time. As the planner for all of my members I am also the point of contact for the entire bridal party, family and guests. My overall goal for each wedding I plan at Cordillera Ranch is to ensure my bride, groom, family and guests have the wedding day they always dreamed of while relaxing and taking it all in. Every wedding is different and special. Always remember to enjoy this time; it will go by so quickly.

By Amanda Salerno Boerne has become well-known for its art galleries and festivals, Momand-Pop eateries, and independently owned boutique shops filled with handcrafted goods. In late 2011, a dedicated group of residents banded together to offer a new dimension of arts for the area, and thus Boerne’s first and only professional performing arts organization was born. In Boerne Performing Arts’ first season in 2012, it delivered three sold-out shows at the Champion High School Auditorium, ranging from amazing dance performances by TAO: The Art of the Drum to Bowfire and the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir. The overwhelming community response to the inaugural season was a welcome relief and resounding endorsement that the efforts of the BPA Committee and its supporters were worthwhile. “To fill up all three shows with just a few months to promote them was incredible in a small community,” said Charlie Hill, a sponsor of the organization. “It was a testament to the high quality shows selected and the efforts by Sue Talford, Carol Schultz, Dan Rogers, and all of the committee members that worked tirelessly to organize and market these events.” Boerne Performing Arts’ mission to encourage participation in the arts and to foster a relationship between the town and performing artists has been enormously successful in its debut year. As a result of the community’s generous offering of sponsorships, donations, and grants, Boerne Performing Arts’ provides an arts outreach program for the local schools of Kendall County. A one-hour production by each of the visiting artists will take place for 3,000 local children during school hours at no cost to the students.

Kicking off the performances of the new year is Drumline Live, a mashup of a traditional marching band performance and original, spirited choreography backdropped by jazz-inspired renditions of popular modern music. Based on the Historically Black College and University marching band tradition, the show is guaranteed to be vibrantly colorful, rhythmically mesmerizing, and exhilaratingly energetic. The band and dance collaboration has been complimented by The Springfield New Sun as the show that “could very well out-stomp ‘STOMP’ and out-blast ‘BLAST!’” Drumline Live performs on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The next show of the year is classical in style and unsurpassable in familial talent. The 5 Browns is comprised of five siblings, all in their 20s, who attended New York’s Juilliard School and tour extensively around the globe as exclusive Steinway artists. Since being dubbed the “Fab Five” by People Magazine, they have been featured on Oprah, 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, The Tonight Show, and the list goes on. The Sarasota Herald Tribune says of the show: “One can only celebrate the unabashed joy and love of music heard and seen in the performances of The 5 Browns.” The 5 Browns take the stage in Boerne on Saturday, February 9, 2013. Boerne will get a taste of Ireland in 2013 with the arrival of Celtic Nights, a showcase of traditional Celtic dances and folksongs that weave a story of Irish culture and heritage. From intensely upbeat tap routines to emotionally moving ballads, Ireland’s history is expressed on stage in an energetic and inspirational approach. The Guardian lends its praise to the Irish troupe in its review of the show: “No wonder this unmissable two hour spectacular has brought audiences to their feet all over the world!” Celtic Nights takes the stage in a tap-dancing frenzy on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Tickets to the world-class performances are available for purchase at the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and the Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau. Thanks to the Boerne Performing Arts, Members of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch also have an exclusive opportunity to attend a private event, “An Evening with The 5 Browns” on Friday, February 8, 2013. The 5 Browns will be joining members at the Cordillera Ranch Clubhouse for a fireside chat as they discuss their success as siblings, musicians, and Juilliard graduates. INTERIOR DESIGN

By Sherry Christofilis

48 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

Over the years, I’ve been asked by many people what they should do to facilitate selling their home at a reasonable price. I have to say I don’t just think as an interior decorator, but as a home buyer as well. I’ve been working in the home building industry with my husband for many years on our specs, model and custom homes and have done many different styles. That is why I decided to venture out to work with other builders and homeowners wanting to update their homes as well as clients wanting to add a guest house to their existing property. I’ve also learned a lot from the professional realtors we’ve worked with over the past 20 years and the strategies that make up my “Top 10 Staging Musts” are: Curb Appeal. Most people won’t even get out of the car to go through your home if it isn’t welcoming from the curb. It is so easy to dress up the front entrance with pots full of seasonal plants at any time of the year. Adding a wreath at the front door is always a nice touch and you can take them with you to the next home. Re-mulching the beds and manicuring the landscaping will help as well. Finally, make sure the front door is updated with either fresh paint, stain or varnish. Bye Bye Clutter. The first thing to do on the inside of your home is get rid of the clutter. One of the major contributors to clutter is too much furniture or accessories. It will make the room seem small if there is too much furniture, but don’t leave it bare. Sometimes we will take out as half of the owner’s furnishing and the home will look bigger. You don’t have to be so dramatic, but take a good look at what you have and ask yourself what you can do without. And of course make sure the home is clean. Home Lighting. One of the ways you can make your home seem warmer is with great lighting. Make sure that all of the bulbs are working throughout the house and that they have proper wattage for the lamps and fixtures. It is recommended to have 100 watts for each 50 square feet. If you don’t have enough built-in lighting then you can always add lamps, which provides lighting with a little personality and color. Make It Bigger. To make a room appear to be bigger than it is, paint it the same color as the adjacent room. If you have a small kitchen and dining room, a seamless look will make both rooms feel like one big space. You can make a sun porch look bigger and more inviting by painting it a pale green to reflect the color of nature. Another design trick: If you want to create the illusion of more space, paint the walls the same color as your drapery. It will give you a seamless and sophisticated look. Create Relaxing Settings with Luxurious Linens. This is something you can always take with you and that makes your home seem updated. Soft colors in the bedroom will give the space the spa-like soothing feeling. Create a relaxing bedroom setting with luxurious linens and soft colors that will make a potential home buyer want to hang out. And remember to de-clutter. By cleaning out your closets, you’re showing off your storage space, which helps sell houses. Extra storage always ranks high on buyers’ priority list. Neutral and Appealing. Painting a living room a fresh neutral color helps tone down any dated finishes in the space. To get adventurous, take a chance and test a quart of paint in a warm, neutral hue. These days, the definition of neutral extends way beyond beige, from warm tans and honeys to soft blue-green. As for bold wall colors, they have a way of reducing offers, so go with neutrals in large spaces. Prim and Polished. Having tile professionally painted can make a bathroom look brand new. Accessorizing can make buyers feel like they are in a spa if you put out items like rolled up towels, decorative baskets and candles. It’s a great way to create a polished look and it doesn’t cost much to do. Update Hardware on Cabinets and Doors. This will give your home a new home feel. Make sure the cabinets are updated with either paint, stain or glazing before you install the new hardware. And instead of replacing the entire dishwasher, you may be able to get a new front panel. Check with the manufacturer to see if replacements are available for your model. Get Rid of Shabby Blinds. You may even want to add new window treatments that you could take with you, unless the home buyer wants to buy them from you and they are included in the sale. Update Appliances. If your kitchen appliances are outdated, invest in a new cook top, stove or refrigerator. Studies show that sellers recoup every penny they spend on appliances. Tip: Stainless steel looks great in the kitchen and will help sell your house, but not when it is covered with fingerprints. If you don’t already have accessories like lamps, rugs, throws and pillows, you can always purchase them before putting your home on the market, because you can always take them to your next home. Mixing the right accessories can make a room more inviting. For maximum effect, group accessories by color, shape, texture or some other unifying element. Update pictures and frames in and around the house. Please feel free to call me at 210-601-6068 if you have any questions or want help on your home for a home makeover, renovation, staging or new construction.

Imagine yourself running the Guadalupe River with a bunch of friends or family members. You take a break from the constant downstream action to get out and stretch. When you turn your attention back to the river, reality hits – your group has already disappeared out of site. Many river trips consist of small groups of boaters who don’t often boat together. Whether or not you boat together often, it is a good idea to have a safety discussion before launching. There are at least three topics that should be discussed before each launch: river hazards, river signals and group dynamics. The most important issue to discuss is “What are the hazards on the run?” Hazards include trees, holes, waterfalls, etc. That is, any river feature that could potentially cause you to have a bad day. Club outfitter staff will help identify potential river hazards for you before launching you on your trip, but it’s a better idea to try and educate yourself and others to these potential hazards. Next on the agenda, boaters should adopt some formula for hanging together. I like the policy where everyone keeps visual contact with the next boater to the rear. This allows the group to spread out when desired, while giving everyone the confidence that they won’t be left running a rapid solo. Other recommendations include appointing a lead and a sweep, which works well when some members of the group are pushing their abilities. The worst policy is “Every man for himself.” Let’s avoid that one.

Finally, you want to make sure that everyone uses a common set of visual signals for communicating on the river. The American Canoe Association (ACA) has endorsed a set of Universal River Signals and they serve as a good place to start. These signals have the advantage that they are known to paddlers around the world and in all paddle sports. The most important signal to know is EMERGENCY. Waving your hands frantically, waving a paddle over your head, or three long blasts on a whistle are universally accepted distress signals. If you notice anyone using this signal you should stop what you are doing and lend a hand. When using signals to communicate hazards on the river, the basic concept is “Don’t point at the hazard.” To signal STOP, form a horizontal bar with your hands or paddle and move it up and down for attention. To indicate ALL CLEAR, form a vertical bar with your paddle or with one arm held high. To signal direction or a preferred course through a rapid around an obstruction, lower the previously vertical signal toward the direction of the preferred course. You don’t have to be limited by these signals. They can be changed (slightly) or augmented to create a more complete language. The important thing is to talk about them beforehand and let everyone in the group know what the signals are. The main point is to talk about the run before you start. If you are new to the river be sure to let others know what your skill level is. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the beautiful Guadalupe River!

Few backyard elements can do more to enhance your outdoor living experience than a shade structure. ™

Whether it is an arbor that welcomes guests to your home, a gazebo that is strictly ornamental, a pergola that provides dining under a canopy of vines, or a pavilion that frames your outdoor room and calls your attention to the sights, sounds, and smells that could have previously been mistaken for vacant air – these structures are a source of some of the most acute outdoor living pleasures. ®

EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES

There is possibly no finer place to enjoy the majesty and beauty of Cordillera Ranch than on horseback. With miles of trails, and a fully equipped Equestrian Center, Cordillera Ranch is truly a dream for those with a passion for horses. Several residents have taken that passion and created their own equine facilities that truly are marvels in their own right. This issue we take a look inside a few of these gems, and highlight more of the beauty that makes Cordillera Ranch so unique.

Tom & Grace Schlagheck YEAR BUILT 2010 SPECS Three stall stable (12’x36’) with 12’x36’ covered aisle; two 24’x30’ walk-out paddocks; tack/hay barn (12’x24’) with 8’x24’ covered porch. Until moving to Cordillera Ranch, we have never lived in a climate where we could ride comfortably all year long. Grace enjoys the absolute quiet of the Hill Country as she works Cali in the arena. Tom prefers to take Pine out on our canter path which overlooks the incredible views of the Guadalupe River Valley.

YEAR BUILT 2005 SPECS 40X40, 3 stalls, tack room, feed room, entry I can’t imagine my life without horses. I have to travel a long way to go to horse shows, but it’s worth it living here [at Cordillera Ranch].

Paula Marsh YEAR BUILT 2007 SPECS The Wyning Edge Friesians Equestrian Center is a 6,000 square foot facility of local limestone and stained cedar. It includes 13 custom Classic Equine European style stalls, Paula’s Office with stone fireplace, Breeding Lab, Cantina saloon with his and her restrooms, Show and Daily Tack Rooms and wash rack. Stalls include automatic waterers, fans and electronic heaters. Adjacent to the barn is a full size dressage arena with viewing deck for watching training lessons and performances. The Texas Hill Country is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live! Riding out on our trails is so peaceful and relaxing! Especially in the early morning as the sun comes up and the fog hangs low over the pastures as our horses graze. We ride beneath grand oaks with cardinals and blue birds fluttering through the branches and we often come upon white tail and axis deer along the way. And when it’s cool and crisp and the horses are feeling frisky, we kick it up a notch and ride like the wind over the rolling hills! There simply aren’t words to describe the joy and freedom you feel in these moments...the moments that truly make life worth living!

IN THE NEWS

Job Title (currently) Senior VP, JP Energy Partners & President Pinnacle Propane/Alliant Gas Tell us a little about the opportunity that took you away from Cordillera Ranch. We initially set out in 2010 to create a Master Limited Partnership (MLP) focused on the propane industry by making strategic propane acquisitions throughout the US. As the company has evolved, in addition to the propane industry, we have worked to diversify our revenues and optimize our scale and knowledge by adding assets that service refineries in the US. We now have significant crude oil transportation and storage assets in some of the largest oil producing regions as well as refined products storage and terminal assets. What specific projects are you working on at JP? My primary focus is managing and growing our propane business. Since 2010 we have made 14 acquisitions in the propane industry and have expanded our operations from what we began with in central and south Texas to now operating in 44 states. By the end of 2013 we will be operating in all of the lower 48 states. We are now the 12th largest propane retailer in the country and are the third largest 20# (BBQ) cylinder exchange business in the country.

66 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

Anyone that spent any time around Cordillera Ranch in the past several years probably came to know Chris Hill, formerly VP of Sales and Marketing. Deeply involved in virtually every aspect of the Cordillera Ranch community, including spearheading the construction of the clubhouse, Chris was a pivotal person in the evolution of Cordillera Ranch. In December 2010, Chris resigned his position to pursue an amazing opportunity in the propane industry. We took a moment to catch up with Chris to see how he’s doing, and where he’s headed.

Exciting news on the horizon? The most exciting thing on the horizon for us is that we have so much visibility to growth and the capital to continue to grow. In addition to continued growth, we have been able to prove that we are good operators of the businesses we acquire. What do you miss most about Cordillera? Where do I start? The people at Cordillera and Boerne in general are the best. Boerne will always be home for us. Cordillera is such a special place and I’ve seen nothing else like it. Recent family additions In addition to our 2 kids, Price and Charlotte, who we had while living at Cordillera, we had another addition Ella in January. The family is complete and wonderful but Jennifer and I miss being at Cordillera. Long term plans with JP Energy Partners? It’s hard to predict at this point but I would say it’s just to stay focused on the core strategies and principles that we started with. We have a great opportunity because of the platform we’ve now built so we just have to stay disciplined in our decisions and continue to commit capital and focus in the right areas. When are you coming through Boerne next? I get there about once a month for one reason or another. We have operations in the San Antonio and Austin markets and I get there to see family quite a bit.

HEALTH

By Christian Luevano Diet fads come and go, causing your waistline to do much of the same. Many people looking to increase their fitness while at the same time losing weight can get lost in a sea of options, supplements, and internet articles about the latest and greatest system that will instantaneously cure all that ails them. The Paleo Diet, mirrored after the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors, continues to stand the tests of the scientific community and, thankfully, yield fantastic results for those that follow the plan. Focusing on simple foods (meats, vegetables), and cutting out heavily processed foods can deliver tremendous weight loss, increased health, and an overall fitness far superior to any other diet.

70 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

You do not need to be a paleontologist, dietitian, nutritionist, doctor or anything like that to be interested in the Paleo Diet. All you need to be interested in is leading and living a healthy lifestyle. If you’re not familiar with the “Paleo Diet” yet, you will soon hear about it. This diet seems to be gaining more and more popularity as more and more people are seeing great results when they adhere to a Paleo Diet, or as some call it, Paleo lifestyle. Well, what is Paleo? I think the definition by Greg Glassman, founder of Cross-Fit Inc., is spot on “Eat meat and vegetables, healthy fats, some fruit, little starch and no sugar,” Glassman summarizes. The good news is that the Paleo Diet is as straight-forward as it seems. When my wife and I decided to take the plunge into the Paleo Diet, I was very hesitant. I (like most people) love food and love to eat it. I assumed that by following the Paleo Diet I would be eating a lot of chicken, salad and a whole lot of bland foods. I found out early that my assumption was way off. When asked about the Paleo Diet, I will quickly say “it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle!” I believe “diet” gets people in a particular

Tips

When Eating Paleo

mindset. People who go on diets typically don’t make long-term, lifestyle changes. When I talk about a Paleo Lifestyle, I’m referring to a long-term lifestyle change. I suggest starting with the Whole 30 challenge. In a nutshell, it’s 30 days of hardcore clean eating. It’s designed to reset your body. It’s not easy starting out, but those who finish the Whole 30 challenge report having more energy, improved performance, and an overall better, healthier feeling. The true success comes after the Whole 30 challenge. The challenge is only the kickoff for a lifestyle that requires lasting changes. Following the Whole 30 challenge, I suggest to sticking with an 80/20 plan. 80% of the time, eat Paleo, 20% of time, eat whatever you like. I’m a big believer in moderation when it comes to eating. There are very few people who can adhere to long-term strict eating habits. The 80/20 rule makes living a heathly lifestyle achievable. Make good choices most of the time, and allow yourself to eat a piece of cake every once in a while. With a lot of planning and preparation on my wife’s part, I can proudly say that we have been adhering to a Paleo Lifestyle for two years now and I have never felt better. The Paleo Lifestyle has changed the way we live.

Enjoy eating Paleo. Enjoy what you eat. If you are unhappy with what you are eating you are unlikely to continue to keep eating that way, and once the nutrition is gone, staying fit and healthy becomes much harder. Pre-cook food. Spend a few hours at the beginning of the week and cook big batches of food. This will allow you to minimize the amount of time that you have to spend cooking during the week. Cook more than you need. This is similar to the previous tip, the idea being that if you cook more than you need for one meal then you can eat it later or the next day. Rather than cutting yourself off from all of those foods which you enjoy that aren’t 100% Paleo friendly, simply eat smaller amounts and be moderate.

Do not run out of food. This is horrible. Do not let it happen to you. Try planning out your meals for a week. This comes easily to type one personalities, but can be a nuisance for the rest of us. This has the benefit of ensuring you know what you need in the house for the week and eliminates that time-wasting period during which you try and figure out what you should cook for dinner. Keep a handy meal replacement in your car, office, desk or bag for a Paleo-friendly snack in case plans change. Learn to use spices. This will do wonders for you and will offer variety and different flavors to your meals. Eat lots of vegetables. Try and eat a good variety with many different colors.

Do not keep junk or unhealthy food that you know you shouldn’t eat in the house. For most people, if it is in the house they will eventually eat it.
