I always appreciate the features in our CR Living magazine — hearing why folks chose Cordillera Ranch, what drew them here and what they’ve discovered they enjoy about the Clubs and Hill Country since becoming residents.

While I was reading the feature in this issue about Jeff and Amye Johnson, mouthwatering and envious of Jeff’s steaks (more on that in a minute), I was struck by a quote from Jeff — “If you build it, they will come.” We all recognize that quote from Field of Dreams, but for a lot of Cordillera Ranch homeowners, the Clubs and community represent a beacon to call friends and family back home, with endless activities unique to our neck-of-the-woods and settings sure to be remembered for a lifetime.

As Amye said, family is certainly an important part of their lives — a sentiment that I’m sure is the case for everyone at Cordillera Ranch.

Finally, I would NEVER solicit for, and/or invite myself to dinner, but Jeff and Amye, please go ahead and pencil me in for the next time steaks hit the grill because I’m going to make an exception here and formally extend my acceptance to come over for dinner at your convenience. Thanks in advance!

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR CORDILLERA RANCH?

My background as an art and yearbook teacher, coupled with my experience as a social media manager and webpage coordinator, uniquely equipped me for my role as a Communications and Family Events Manager at Cordillera Ranch. Through teaching, I developed strong organizational skills and a knack for creative communication. My digital roles further honed my ability to engage audiences and manage online platforms effectively. Each aspect of my past work history has prepared me to excel in this dynamic and multifaceted position.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

What I enjoy most about working at Cordillera Ranch is the fast-paced environment that allows me to thrive through multitasking. My favorite part of the job is creating flyers and marketing materials using Canva. It's where I get to unleash my creativity and make a real impact on engaging our community.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE?

One of the most rewarding experiences in my career was working as an art teacher, where I had the privilege of helping children discover and nurture their creative abilities. Witnessing the transformation of my students as they gained confidence in their artistic skills and expressed themselves through art was incredibly fulfilling.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS?

I would describe myself as bubbly, artistic and caring. My vibrant energy and enthusiasm for life are evident in everything I do. Creativity is my passion, and I love exploring different artistic expressions. Additionally, I deeply value empathy and strive to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

ARE YOU A CAT OR DOG PERSON, AND WHY?

I'm definitely a dog person, no doubt about it! My furry friends, Addie Mae and Sue, are my constant source of joy and companionship. Addie Mae, my beloved sweetheart since college, is a gentle giant who lives for cuddles and lazy naps. Then there's Sue, our energetic male red heeler mix, named after Johnny Cash's famous song 'A Boy Named Sue,' a playful nod to my fiancé's love for the artist. Their unconditional love and companionship make every day an adventure!

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

In my spare time, I'm often immersed in a range of creative activities, from oil painting to sculpting clay earrings and painting murals. I also enjoy evenings spent dancing with my fiancé, Dylan, at local dance halls and listening to live music. When summer rolls around, you can almost always find me by a body of water, particularly floating down the river in New Braunfels, TX.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO HAPPINESS?

My secret to happiness is simple: kindness, positivity and faith. Being kind to others and maintaining a positive outlook on life brings joy and fulfillment. Additionally, putting my faith in God and following His guidance provides a source of peace and purpose that enriches every aspect of my life.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO SUCCEED?

My biggest motivation to succeed is my fiancé, Dylan. I'm fueled by the desire to provide us with a wonderful life together. Dylan's support encourages me to push myself to achieve our shared goals and dreams, motivating me to strive for success in all aspects of life.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST RECENT ADVENTURE?

My most recent adventure hasn't happened yet, but I'm eagerly looking forward to it! In June, I'll be tying the knot in New Braunfels, TX, and shortly after, my fiancé and I will embark on our honeymoon to the stunning island of Santorini, Greece!

MEET YOUR NEW NEIGHBORHOOD FOODIES!

AMYE AND JEFF JOHNSON

Your new neighbors, Amye and Jeff Johnson, who moved into Cordillera Ranch in 2022, are already beloved by those who have met them. The couple was surprised to have been chosen to be the featured homeowners. However, the more you get to know them, the more you quickly understand why they were an exceptional choice!

First of all, they adore entertaining and do so in style, although in this regard too, the couple is very humble.

“Amye likes to entertain here at home. I’m a lucky man because she’s a fabulous cook,” shared Jeff, who is known to be the more reserved of the two — that is until you get to know him and enjoy his quick-witted sense of humor. Amye is the more loquacious one.

“That’s been our fun way of meeting people here. We just like to host people at the house. We’re very casual entertainers, but there’s usually a beef entrée,” Amye laughed.

Jeff responded, “It’s not casual. She goes all out.”

Amye agreed, “There are no paper plates involved.”

According to Jeff, Amye has a pretty extensive repertoire of dishes she creates for guests, and it’s not always beef, but don’t be shocked if it is. Jeff has already earned a reputation as the go-to guy for questions about beef, steaks, etc., and that’s because he really is an expert.

Both Jeff and Amye are native Texans with deep Texas roots. Jeff was raised in Houston and graduated from UT-Austin before his career took him to Chicago, where he worked on the Chicago Board of Trade. Amye is from Dallas but she was already familiar with the Hill Country, having spent eight summers of her

childhood on the Guadalupe as a Camp Mystic girl.

They met on a blind date set up by one of Amye’s friends in Dallas. “She said my fiancé has a friend who just moved back from Chicago, and I’m going to have to put you together for a dinner party,” remembered Amye.

The relationship developed slowly as they went to a lot of wedding parties together. Jeff, being more thoughtful and introverted, kept his feelings to himself until he took Amye to meet his family one Thanksgiving. “I said, so just curious, do you like me. And he said, ‘I’m taking you to Thanksgiving,’” she noted. He may have been shy, but he describes her as the most giving person he knows who tirelessly helps friends and family.

Jeff recalls going over to Amye’s condo where she’d be busy cooking and fixing hors d’oeuvres for them to enjoy. “I just remember that standing out as a great memory,” he said.

“There’s a food theme here,” Amye laughed. “Jeff is so gen-

uinely, authentically kind and he’s funny. People think he’s quiet but he’s very funny.”

True, but also there’s a deep camaraderie the couple exudes. You can tell they are simply happy in each other’s company. Even after 33 years together, they are still going strong. It’s the slow burning embers that last, Amye points out.

After only being married for a few months, they ventured off to Oregon because Jeff had the opportunity to lead a beef processing and export company in Portland. The intent was to only stay out of state for a few years, but in the blink of an eye, 29 years had passed when they heard the siren’s call of the Texas Hill Country beckoning them home.

Their three amazing children are all adults now and live across all three coasts. There’s Tatum, who is 30-years-old and recently married to Patrick Quinn. They live in NYC where Tatum is an associate partner with Bain Consulting; Rawls, a

30 | MAY/JUNE 2024

27-year-old Austin data analyst with AMD; and finally, Forrest, who is 24 and lives in Los Angeles working for CAA, a music talent agency.

“On a visit to San Antonio for a friend’s wedding in March of 2020, we came out to visit Jeff’s sister and in-laws, along with our niece, who lives in Cordillera. We had lunch on the patio overlooking that view, and we were sold. We went back to Oregon and dreamed of sunshine, oak trees and music on the patio,” recalled Amye.

They returned for a family weekend later that summer and did some “tire kicking” with Cordillera Ranch agent, Vance Waller, and found a lot that Garner Homes built their beautiful “empty nester” house on.

Amye, who launched her career in advertising after graduating from Vanderbilt University, is now a business owner and runs an executive recruiting company called Edrington Johnson Re-

cruiting. “I ran it from the West Coast for 30 years. My business partner is in Dallas, so it’s nice to be closer,” she explained.

Besides working full-time and entertaining as much as possible, the couple is active in a variety of Cordillera groups and activities including a couple’s Bible Study group. Amye can often be found on the pickleball court, and volunteers with Charity Chicks, a neighborhood group that partners with local non-profits. She’s also attempting to improve her golf game with Chicks & Sticks at the Club.

Whereas, Jeff likes to take advantage of the Golf and Gun Clubs, and enjoys reuniting with his Alpha Tao Omega fraternity brothers for their annual dove hunt. He also volunteers for The 1017 Project (a charitable organization focused on providing high protein, nutrient dense ground beef to food pantries) when he isn’t traveling to California and Asia for meetings as the V.P. of Export Sales for Harris Ranch Beef Co. You’ve probably had a taste yourself, as the company supplies beef to Texas’ renowned grocery store, H-E-B.

“Nobody knows I also like to road bike,” said Jeff. “In Oregon, I used to cycle all over the state.”

Their daughter’s recent wedding, which included a luncheon and groom’s golf tournament at the Club, and had them marching through the streets of Boerne with bagpipes, took up a lot of their free time, but hopefully you’ll soon spot Jeff riding the roads around the Ranch. No matter what though, the couple still makes time for each other and their extensive family.

“Our family is important to us; the kids are important to us,” explained Amye. “At first, we were nervous about relocating. We wanted them to call this home, but the kids love it here and can’t wait to come down whenever they can.”

“If you build it, they will come,” Jeff quipped, who’s known to throw steaks on the grill the first night of a visit from family and friends. “The cows make the steaks. I just grill ‘em.” Amye and the family refer to these kinds of comments as “Jeffisms,” by the way.

Although the guest room is rarely empty, Jeff and Amye have one child that still lives at home — what some might refer to as their fur baby, they simply call him their “favorite child.” Emmitt is a miniature Australian Sheppard that likes to go on hikes around the Ranch, particularly the Guadalupe River.

“We walk the dog over to Swede Creek Park and let him play in the river. We like to go for walks together at night before dinner,” shared Amye.

Exploring the Texas Hill Country, enjoying the burnt orange sunsets and discovering new vineyards for wine tastings, not to mention barbecue joints, are also the couple’s favorite pastimes. “We go out on a Saturday to try the best barbecue. He rates the meats and I rate the sides,” added Amye. Sounds like a match made in heaven! They’ve compiled a list of favorite barbecue places they’ve researched, which is another thing you might want to ask their advice on.

While Jeff and Amye’s first year on the Ranch was spent settling in and wedding planning, they are grateful to be back at home in Texas. “We have met such amazing, lovely people here at Cordillera Ranch — dear friends and family — that we feel so blessed to be a part of this special place,” smiled Amye.

CUSTOM GOLF CLUB FITTINGS

Golf clubs have changed a lot over the years — from persimmon heads and blade irons to 460cc driver heads and hollow-body irons.

The golf ball has changed a lot as well — from rubber-band cores to solid construction that’s manufactured with extremely tight tolerances. All of this has made the game a bit easier, less intimidating and more fun. At the same time, we have more options now than ever. Dialing in the right equipment can make a huge difference on your scorecard. While equipment can’t fix swing flaws, it can encourage players to do the right thing and reward you properly.

This is where club fitting comes in — at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, we have a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center that is dedicated to helping our members play better golf. With the help of Trackman, our golf professionals and our fitting components, we can determine the right mix of equipment for

just about every golfer. We’ve partnered with the big four club manufacturers — PING®, Taylormade®, Callaway® and Titleist®. In addition, we have iron fitting components for Srixon® as well as the full suite from XXIO. If you are unfamiliar with XXIO, they make super lightweight clubs that perform great for slower swing speed players.

“What’s the hot new driver?” We get that question a lot … my answer is, “All of them!” All of the manufacturers make great stuff — that business is as competitive as it’s ever been. We fit brands agnostically — a player may end up with a Callaway driver, Taylormade fairway woods, and Titleist irons … it just depends on what works best for each particular player. I’m on Callaway’s Master Staff; Aaron is a Callaway guy;

GOLF
32 | MAY/JUNE 2024

Jacques and Nick are Titleist staffers; Katie is with Taylormade; and Camille is with XXIO. We give each vendor a fair shot and let the equipment speak for itself. That’s why we stopped hosting demo days a couple of years ago — instead of just hitting clubs from one vendor, you can come to the Golf Performance Center and test everything.

We are firm believers in the motto, “If ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If just tweaking the setting on your current gamer can increase performance, we’ll go that route instead of recommending a new club. Our goal is to help our members play better golf, not just fill their bags with stuff they don’t need.

We’re going to get a little technical here. Stopping power (how quick you can get a ball stop) is an important factor when looking at irons, hybrids and high lofted fairway woods because we are hitting these clubs into greens and the game is all about controlling where the ball stops. We all want more distance (myself included) and we try to give players that if we

can while maintaining or increasing stopping power with these clubs. This metric is determined by launch angle, spin rate and landing angle.

On the flip side, when looking at the driver, we are trying to maximize total distance. To do this, we need to optimize ball speed, launch and spin to create the right flight that unlocks a player’s true distance potential. While an $800 shaft might help some players, it’s not required for most. We always start with stock options and only venture into the aftermarket components when it will make a measurable difference.

At then end of the day, having the right tools for the job is going to make the game more fun, and our team is here to help our members figure out that complicated equation.

AZALEA INVITATIONAL RECAP

Our Azalea Invitational is traditionally held on the Friday of Masters week. Members form 4-person teams that can consist of one member and three guests, two members and two guests, three members and one guest, or four members. The format is two best net balls of the foursome, plus each team picks two players from the Masters and their Friday scores count towards their team score. It’s no surprise that World #1, Scottie Scheffler, was a very common pick this year! Friday was a tough day in Augusta — it was the highest scoring average for an individual round in Masters history. There were only a handful of scores under-par and the lowest round (3-under) was shot by Masters rookie Ludvig Aberg. As for the conditions at Cordillera Ranch — the greens were slick and the wind blew a little, but overall, it was a beautiful day to play golf.

Congrats to our top finishers and thanks to the 108 players that competed in the event!

Corey Roberson is the Director of Golf at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at croberson@cordilleraranch.com and 830.336.4653.

AS PICKLEBALL POPULARITY CONTINUES TO GROW, NEW EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES

Since this time last year, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association has announced an 85 percent growth in pickleball participation. Between new players needing a start-up kit or frequent players going through several paddles a year, the pickleball market has continued to expand.

Paddles, balls, shoes and eyewear are all necessities for beginner to advanced players. The spike of interest and financing has led to manufacturers researching new materials and technologies to develop new products.

Materials such as carbon fiber, polypropylene, graphite, fiberglass, polymer, epoxy resin and composite are leading to breakthroughs in the paddle manufacturing industry. Pickleball paddles have many variations even though the square inches of the paddle face are the same. Some are different shapes, from square, rectangular, oval and teardrop to name a few. Paddle length, width, weight and balance all affect how the paddle performs. The player’s skill level and needs will be the best measure of which paddle the player should use. Some provide more power and some more control. Others can have more spin and others a larger sweet spot. There are many options, but it is always best to talk to our professional staff for recommendations rather than purchasing a random paddle online. You can demo paddles at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Tennis and Pickleball Club, where we have a variety of brands and models.

Court shoes are critical for both movement and injury. The wrong shoe can hinder your movement and increase the chance of ankle and knee injuries. A court shoe like a tennis shoe is highly recommended. This soles of the tennis shoes grip the court well enough for stopping and starting and for change of direction, but also gives enough so the shoe does not stick to the court and cause rolling of ankles and twisting of the knees. Those are the most common injuries related to footwear and pickleball.

Lastly, eyewear is another critical part for pickleball players. Unlike tennis, pickleball players are closer to each other because the court is one-fourth the size of a tennis court and most of the play is at the net. The ball is plastic and perforated so the edges of those perforations can be a hazard if a player is struck in the eye. I recommend eyewear with advanced impact protection. Eyewear can also have a variety of lenses; the colors can help pick-up the ball faster and contrast the court and windscreens. A darker shade of lens is better when the sun is out, and a clear lens is best for night play.

Balls are always a hot topic for pickleball players. There are indoor balls, outdoor balls and everything in between, which is called a hybrid ball. The most important aspect of the ball is the consistency of the flight and bounce. It is a whiffle ball so the size and number of holes in the ball can vary, which can affect the flight and bounce. Durability is a factor as after extended use balls can crack, and temperature can also cause balls to underperform.

All and all, pickleball has come a long way with its advancement in technology in many areas. Feel free to contact your Cordillera Ranch certified tennis and pickleball professionals, or stop by the Pro Shop and we can help outfit you with all of these items.

MAKING YOUR MACROS COUNT

“Eat no carbs!”

“Eat these carbs.”

“Eat all fats.”

“Eat all the protein and nothing but the protein.”

It is difficult to navigate how much and what percentage of macros to eat … and for some, what are macros anyway? I get it — we are hammered with so much conflicting information these days. Many despise counting calories, and now we are talking about macros? Believe me, it is much easier than one might think. In many foods, we get a mix of these macronutrients, but it is best to eat them in their whole form.

Let’s talk about what macros are: the building blocks to our body’s energy systems. Macronutrients are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Our bodies also utilize micronutrients, but for now, we will stick with macronutrients and how to balance them.

HERE ARE THE GENERAL GUIDELINES TO THE MACRO BALANCING ACT:

• Balanced diet: 40-50% carbohydrates, 25-30% proteins, 25-30% fats

• Low-carb diet: 20-30% carbohydrates, 40-50% proteins, 30-40% fats

• High-carb diet (for athletes or those with high energy needs): 55-65% carbohydrates, 10-15% proteins, 20-25% fats

PROTEINS are essential amino acids that build and repair muscle, tissue, skin, hair, nails and bones. It helps with enzyme function and hormone production; transports nutrients, oxygen, hormones and waste products; and it also helps with immunity and fluid balance.

We need about 55 grams of protein a day for a 150lb person that is sedentary. So, our goals, lifestyle and physical activity determines how much we need.

Here are some guidelines:

• For someone who is active but seeking to lose some weight: 0.8 – 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day

• For someone who is active with healthy weight and body composition: 1.6 – 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day

• For someone who is healthy and looking to change weight and body composition: 1.6 – 3.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day

With Precision Nutrition counseling, once we figure out how much protein you need per day, we measure this by the size of the palm of your hand and decide how many “palms” of protein you need per day. Each “palm” is 20-30 grams of protein. For example, I eat three to five servings of protein per day.

FATS

Dietary fats have six major roles:

• Provides us with sustaining energy — it keeps us full longer

• It helps make and balance hormones (particularly sex hormones and corticosteroid hormones)

• It forms our brain and nervous system

• It forms our cell membranes

• It helps us transport fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K

• It gives us two fatty acids that we cannot make on our own: omega-6 fatty acid and omega-3 fatty acids

We want a balanced mix of fat types and here are some whole-food, non-processed sources: nuts and seeds, avocados, dairy, eggs, fatty fish, beef, pork and lamb, poultry, wild game, olives and extra-virgin olive oil, and fresh coconut. We want to get our fish and game wild caught, because the fatty acid profiles are best this way.

WELLNESS
38 | MAY/JUNE 2024

So, how much fat per day is best? Give me a thumbs up! Your thumb is the representation of a fat portion. Aim for one to two thumb-sized portions per meal. Highly active individuals need two to three “thumbs” per meal.

CARBOHYDRATES

We demonize carbs, but the truth is that we need them for energy. It is the amount of carbohydrates and the type of them that we can watch out for, making sure that the carbohydrates that we eat have fiber — at least two grams (or more!) of fiber per serving. Eating whole foods that are low on the GI (Glycemic Index) or low on the GL (Glycemic Load) keeps blood sugar from spiking. Fruits and veggies contain carbs, but also contain fiber, as do whole grains and legumes. With fiber intake, always ensure you are hydrating properly so it makes it through the system smoothly. Vary your carb intake with the amount of activity and exercise you do. A cupped hand will represent a portion of carbs. If you do better with the lower carb life, aim for 20 grams or less per meal.

I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH THESE FEW TIDBITS:

• Eat your protein first, then the fat. This will slow down the blood sugar spike that you would get if you ate the carbs first, which begin digestion in your mouth.

• Have a variety of foods to bring quality nutrients into the body. Eat foods that are in season.

• If you get enough protein and fiber per day, it is very likely that you will eat less of everything else.

• You don’t have to count macros all the time once you get the hang of what those portions and portion sizes look like.

• Think of eating as a whole life pattern, rather than a diet.

• Eat slowly and mindfully. It will help your body properly digest all of the nutrients you need.

Our trainers are here for nutrition guidance, and we will make it easy and personal to navigate!

HAPPY SPRING!

In this installment of Taste, I would like to personally invite all our members to Axis to taste a brand-new wine list. The opening list consists of wines by the glass from around the world.

Our whites are meant for the spring and summer and will be perfect for a cocktail as well as the Axis menu. They will certainly quench the thirst of golfers or pickleballers coming off the course and courts. The reds are juicy and robust, and some earthy — the perfect blend of Old World and New World. You will find there is the perfect wine just for you.

The next phase will be to expand into a well-rounded list. Again, my intentions are to have something for all to enjoy and learn about. They will be well-knowns, minimally knowns, and some highly allocated selections as well.

As the excitement for Axis’ opening is spreading and we all get a chance to make our way over, I’m sure you will agree with me about how spectacular this outlet will be. We had the great opportunity to host Amalia and Jessica Palmaz on the Axis patio overlooking the gorgeous Hill Country sunset at the Palmaz Wine Dinner. The patio was full, and besides about 30 minutes of direct sun, it quickly turned into a very comfortable and enjoyable evening for the 43 attendees. Amalia herself called me over to tell me just how great the food was paired with their wonderful Napa wines.

Now I would like to highlight a couple of the wine selections:

Jeffrey M. Cohen, CMS, is the Wine Specialist/Beverage Manager at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at jcohen@cordilleraranch.com and 210.677.9234.

The Villa Maria ‘EarthGarden’ Sauvignon Blanc is from Marlborough, New Zealand. It is organically grown with wildflower gardens planted among the vineyard rows and regenerative viticulture to keep New Zealand’s soils healthy and ecosystems thriving. EarthGarden is bursting with flavor as nature intended. It is a zesty fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc with the complexity and character of the vineyards shining through in the glass through texture, palate weight and intensity. On the nose

it has lifted aromas of citrus fruit, lime and grapefruit that jump right out of the glass. The flavors on the palate showcase fresh herbs, lemongrass and passionfruit. The intense fresh fruit concentration is balanced with acidity and is perfectly thirst-quenching for warm days as spring eases into summer. The wine pairs wonderfully with plant-based dishes, so try it with fresh summer salads featuring vibrant lemon zest and green herb accents. The San Polo Rubio is primarily made up of the Sangiovese grape. It has a brilliant ruby red color, with purplish glints. The bouquet is intense and persistent with fresh aromas of red cherries, violets and black currants followed by subtly spicy notes. It is well-structured and balanced with satisfying tannins and aromatic persistence. The nuances of forest fruits and cherries, which are typical of sangio, make it easy to drink, yet still intense and elegant. Rubio expresses the vitality and immediacy of crisply fresh Sangiovese grapes from Montalcino. Due to its versatility, it is excellent by the glass and ideal for open air barbeques. It is delicious when paired with various cold cuts, salami, pasta dishes, sausages, grilled meats and medium-matured cheeses such as Pecorino.

Thank you all for your continuous support of the wine program! Please come in and give these selections a try.

Jeff

KAYAK FISHING THE CENTRAL COAST OF TEXAS

With the continued drought conditions in the Texas Hill Country, we’ll have to head to the coast this summer for some fishing trips. Fishing the Texas Coastal Bend offers some of the greatest inshore fishing excitement around.

The Coastal Bend of Texas is generally considered to be about a 150-mile stretch of the Texas Gulf Coast starting at the southern end of Matagorda Island and extending to the Mansfield Cut in Kenedy County at the southern edge of the Padre Island National Seashore. It includes Refugio, San Patricio, Aransas, Nueces, Kleberg and Kenedy Counties.

It has an extensive estuary bay system created by several rivers that wind their way through Texas to the Gulf Coast and are protected by some barrier island systems along the Texas coastline.

STEALTH ON THE FLATS

Kayaks afford inshore anglers stealth when fishing saltwater flats. The shallow, clear flats of the Coastal Bend area, have long been a favorite destination for wade fishing. However, believe it or not, as effective as wade fishing is, fishing from a kayak can be even better.

There is no other craft capable of covering water as shallow and as silently as a kayak. My kayak affords me complete mobility in scant inches of water. Also, I am able to move much more quietly in the kayak than in a boat or wading. With our fleet of Jackson fishing kayaks, standing, spotting, stalking and site casting to fish on the flats has never been more enjoyable.

The kayak advantage is never more defined than it is when covering a shallow flat with a soft, muddy bottom. These areas often hold concentrations of fish, but are difficult and tiresome to wade. A kayak on the other hand allows you to skim along these flats in relative comfort and without the fish-spooking splashing and bottom disturbance that often accompanies wading through knee-deep mud.

Kayaking also allows you to avoid common wade-fishing nuisances such as stingrays and jellyfish while still being able to reach the shallow spots normally reserved for wade fishermen only. Fishing kayaks offer a large amount of storage space and

that’s a definite advantage over wading belts and shirt pockets. And, if honey-hole number one is not producing, it is a small inconvenience to paddle off in search of more prosperous waters as opposed to being limited to those that can be reached by foot.

Essentially, a kayak combines a boater’s ability to cover water, store equipment and avoid painful stingrays with the wade fisherman's ability to fish shallow flats quietly and thoroughly.

WHAT YOU NEED

The most basic and essential piece of equipment is, of course, the kayak itself. There are several manufacturers who offer a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors and options. There are also a few types of fishing kayaks: the paddle craft, the peddle craft and the motorized craft. I will focus on the paddle craft since that is the type of kayak I prefer to fish off of for shallow water flats fishing. The Outfitter Center at Cordillera Ranch offers Jackson and Ocean Kayaks, a few of the best fishing kayak manufacturers on the market. We are also a dealer for these brands and can order you any type of kayak you’d need for the rivers, lakes or bays in Texas. Depending on which make and model you decide on, fishing kayaks can run anywhere from $800 to $3000. For saltwater use, the sit-on-top variety is preferable to the enclosed cockpit style that is popular for river riding. These models usually offer more stability and a large roomy cockpit. Sit-on-tops are also much easier to get in and out of, as well as more comfortable if you plan to spend any length of time on the water. Usually sit-on-tops will come equipped with either recessed storage areas and straps or waterproof hatches. The type of storage you choose is strictly personal preference.

Next, you need to select a paddle. Traditionally, kayakers use double-bladed paddles. However, some fishermen prefer singleblade, canoe-type paddles. The double-bladed paddle gives the user more speed and maneuverability, but can be awkward and clumsy when trying to cast. A short, single-blade model can be easily stored in the cockpit while fishing, but can be tiring to use when paddling substantial distances. Two-piece, doublebladed paddles offer the best of both worlds. They can be used as a double-blade when covering long distances. Once in a fishing area, they can be broken down and used as a single-blade or push-pole for tight quarter maneuvering.

OUTDOORS 52 | MAY/JUNE 2024

In addition to the kayak and paddle, there are several basic pieces of equipment that are a must on any kayak adventure. First, since you will be fishing, you need to select a rod and reel as well as a reasonable assortment of tackle. While some people opt for mountable rod holders, it is usually easier to lay the rod in the cockpit of the kayak so that it is always available for a quick cast or two. Generally, a small assortment of artificial lures ranging from soft-plastics to top water lures in one or two utility boxes will be adequate. Once underway, these can be tossed into the cockpit within arm's reach. Since kayaks are light (usually under 75 lbs.), it is advisable to bring a small drift sock to ensure you maintain a fishable speed while drifting. A small mushroom anchor is often helpful if you plan to fish structure or in case of emergency.

Lifejackets should always be worn while kayaking, even in the relatively calm bay waters. Polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and fresh water all help fight the heat.

KEEP IT SAFE, ENJOYABLE

When packing for a kayak trip, pack light but never sacrifice the essentials for a safe, comfortable trip. Things like a firstaid kit, compass, flashlight, sunscreen and water don't take up much space. However, these items can make all the difference in the world should something go wrong. Before departing, alert someone to your plans. Let them know when you plan to leave, when you expect to be back and what area you intend to explore. Check the wind, tides and weather before embarking on your trip, and always wear a lifejacket while on the water. If you ever have any questions about fishing the coast or would like to plan a trip with the Club Outfitter staff, don’t hesitate to contact us.

TIGHT LINES!

Here are a few trips we have planned this summer:

KAYAK FISHING ARANSAS PASS

June 11 & 12, 2024

2:30pm (Tues) to 7:00pm (Wed)

Fee: $275

Join the Outfitter staff as we head to Aransas Pass and paddle either the Lighthouse Lakes Trail or Shamrock in search of red fish and speckled trout. The Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail was the very first Texas Paddling Trail and is actually a series of four loops ranging in length from 1.25 miles to 6.8 miles. The trails meander through an extensive black mangrove estuary, into sloughs and back lakes near the historic 1857 Lydia Ann Lighthouse on North Harbor Island. Shamrock cove is tucked in between Shamrock Island and Mustang Island on the east shore of Corpus Christi Bay. The water depth in the cove is eight to 10 feet with great structure on every side of it. The eastern shore of Shamrock Island and the inlet on the north end of it, known as Little Shamrock Cove, are good for trout, flounder and redfish. The drop offs to the deeper portions of the cove are good for trout, and the flats and cuts around the cove are prime for redfish. The weather and local conditions will dictate where we fish.

We`ll glide through mangroves and seagrass flats that provide outstanding bird watching and fishing for red drum, spotted seatrout and flounder in the maze of tidal channels and flats.

The trip includes kayaks, lodging on Tuesday night, fishing gear if needed, breakfast and lunch on Wednesday and beverages. Dinner on Tuesday night will be on your own as we visit a local Port Aransas restaurant. Participants will need to provide a Texas fishing license and fishing equipment. I have a “What to Bring” list that I`ll be sending participants.

FISHING THE UPPER LAGUNA MADRE

July 24-26, 2024

3:00pm (Wednesday) to 12:00pm (Friday)

Fee: $575

Join the Outfitter staff as we head to the upper Laguna Madre for incredible boat and wade fishing on the Texas coast. The Upper Laguna Madre is a long narrow bay that runs south from Corpus Christi Bay past Baffin Bay to the Land cut. Its Spanish name is translated to mean "Mother Lagoon." There are no significant freshwater flows or cuts from the Gulf of Mexico into the Laguna Madre, giving it a higher salinity than most area bays. It’s somewhat closed nature also means that the fish populations tend to stay within the Upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay system yearround. The shallow grass flats, shallow cuts and spoil islands created with the dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway, which runs the length of the Laguna Madre, are the key structure that make it a popular area to catch redfish, trout, flounder and black drum.

The trip includes lodging on Wednesday and Thursday nights, breakfast and lunch on Thursday, fishing guide and all fishing equipment, and beverages all day Thursday. Dinner on Wednesday and Thursday night will be on your own as we visit local restaurants. Participants will need to provide a Texas fishing license. I have a “What to Bring” list that I`ll be sending participants.

WENDY MCCURLEY, M.D. AND HER TEAM

SOUTH AFRICA: MARCH 11-25, 2024

Katie Dillard, Director of Instruction, and I would like to express our gratitude to the seven couples who joined us on the first Signature Vacation to South Africa, a trip organized by The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. This Club has a rich history of organizing Signature Vacations to many great destinations such as Napa Valley, Costa Rica and Hawaii. During my interview, I was asked which part of the job scares me the most. I replied, “The Signature Vacations.” When asked why, I said, “I don't know enough about wine to take people to Napa Valley.” However, I was told that I could choose any unique destination that I felt the members would love. After a member and good friend, Hugh Ross, who happens to be from South Africa, hosted a wine dinner featuring Vergelegen at the Club, we sat down with the Vergelegen wine team to discuss dates and recommendations, and booked the trip shortly after!

Our 10-day trip was exceptional as we covered many different areas, including the City of Cape Town, the Wine Country of Franschhoek and the Safaris at Kruger National Park. We couldn't have asked for more glorious weather — March is the end of summer in South Africa — or a better group to travel with.

CAPE TOWN

Our first three nights in Cape Town were spent at the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel. While in the Cape, we toured the city on sidecars, took the cable car up to Table Mountain, drove all the way down to The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, which is one of the southernmost points in South Africa, and ended the day watching the penguins play at Boulder Beach. Katie hosted a group of golfers at Steenberg Golf Club and Erinvale Golf Club, while I hosted the rest of the group at the Spa and at a chocolate and wine tasting at Waterford Estate.

FRANSCHHOEK

We spent the next two nights in Franschhoek, enjoying the beautiful wine country and wonderful accommodations at Le Quartier Francais. We visited Vergelegen, Grand Provence, Boschendal and Antonij Rupert for wine tastings. We loved Franschhoek because the small and quaint town reminded us of our favorite smalltown Boerne. We enjoyed strolling along the strip, shopping in the boutiques and dining on the patios of the little cafes.

BUHALA LODGE

The second half of our trip in the safari was even more beautiful! We were excited to fly out to Kruger National Park for the safari. We spent our first two nights at Buhala Lodge. When we arrived, we immediately jumped in the safari truck for our late afternoon drive. This was the most surreal experience as we saw four of the Big 5 on our very first drive! As soon as we drove through the gates, we were greeted by a leopard! As we continued to drive, we saw a giraffe, a herd of rhinoceros, three lionesses playing around as if they were house cats, and finally, a male lion enjoying a sunbath. On our way out of the park, the leopard we had seen at the beginning had killed an impala and was enjoying his meal in the tree. Right below him, there was a hyena that was pacing around with anticipation of the leopard dropping some of his meal.

We spent the final day at Buhala at the one and only Leopard Creek Golf Club. This was an incredible treat as the course was in fantastic shape, and the wild animals made for an unforgettable round of golf. We saw a hippo grazing while we were on hole #13, several impalas ran through the course, and monkeys played in the trees. We enjoyed their beautiful dining facilities overlooking the 18th green and shared our stories from the day.

62 | MAY/JUNE 2024

SABI SABI EARTH LODGE

Our last three days were spent at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge. Our shuttle transportation from Buhala to Sabi took us through Kruger National Park so we were able to enjoy an impromptu safari tour where we saw a herd of elephants crossing the street, giraffes snacking along the road and a dazzle of zebra. This stretch of the trip was a unique experience as the resort was set in the heart of the safari. When we arrived, it was so well hidden to blend in with the surroundings that we almost didn't notice it was there. The amazing staff and accommodations were the cherry on top of an already wonderful vacation. Each day they offered a morning and evening game drive. Each group was able to tell their driver what they wanted to see, and the driver made it happen. It was slightly comparable to an adult Disney World full of magic. The animals would be so close to the vehicles you could almost touch them (not that it was advised). We saw all of the Big 5, and each day provided new experiences. My favorite end to the trip was on the day of check-out when elephants made their way to our lodge suite patio and were

Katie and

South Africa. The relationships we

and the early game drives will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We had the best time forming friendships. We were all very close by the end of the trip and plan to get together again for a dinner.

Please keep your eyes peeled for the next Signature Vacation in 2025. We have not released the details yet, but we can tell you it will include wiener schnitzel and beer steins...

THE ULTIMATE IN LUXURY LIVING FROM LIFESTYLE BY STADLER

HOME TOUR LIFESTYLE BY STADLER
64 | MAY/JUNE 2024

The Lifestyle by Stadler portfolio of homes reflects 29 years of custom home building.

Their attention to architectural details, thoughtful site placement, innovative features and luxury design finishes equals their commitment to accommodating each homeowner's lifestyle and providing overall client satisfaction.

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 65

It’s no surprise that luxury custom home builder, Lifestyle by Stadler, is known throughout the Texas Hill Country as one of the premier builders with a stellar reputation that inevitably precedes them.

“We continue to be the longest-standing Preferred Builder in Cordillera Ranch due to the creativity and quality of our builds,” noted Dean Smith, the V.P. of Sales who has 34 years of experience in the industry. “Plus, our deep relationship with the Cordillera Ranch team and experience with the architectural process saves our clients both time and money,” added

Lifestyle by Stadler currently has a model home available for viewing and is in the midst of designing an incredible new 5,000-square-foot model home, which will be situated in the Clubs area at Cordillera Ranch. But even more exciting, they are close to completion of a brand-new inventory home in the Springs of Cordillera Ranch. This stunning one-story home on 57 Sotol Lane sits on a serene oversized lot with 2.34 acres of land and features a transitional open floor plan with an extraordinary number of enviable details.

When folks move to Cordillera Ranch, one of the primary reasons is most certainly for the majestic views of the Texas Hill Country. “If you stand in the foyer, you can look all the way through the house and out to the hill tops of Twin Sisters, about 15 miles away. Having a great view is highly desired. It’s definitely something that people look for here in the Hill Country,” said Dean.

This 4,364-square-foot house, which will be completed in July, offers four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, a three-car garage, formal dining room, study and game room, with large sliding door walls in the back of the great room that can be opened to create one large open space connecting the covered outdoor patio. “The intention for this home was meant for someone who likes to entertain,” said Dean.

The master suite also has sliding doors, which lead out to the spa and pool area, highlighted by a waterfall feature that drops down into the pool. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to that in the morning?

66 | MAY/JUNE 2024
CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 67

As far as the aesthetic of 57 Sotol Lane, the team at Stadler stayed on trend by creating a motif the decorator calls organic modern. The interior is filled with warm tones and colors, stained cabinets, wood floors throughout and even wood ceilings in the great room and kitchen with decorative wood treatments. Floating beams in the foyer and the floor-toceiling stone fireplace in the living room accentuate the look.

Other highlights worth noting include an oversized iron entry door and a spacious outdoor kitchen with a large wood burning fireplace. Inside, the kitchen surrounds a large center island with fully extended and soft close cabinet drawers, and top-of-the-line Thermador ® stainless appliances include a 48-inch range with griddle and a 30-inch column refrigerator and freezer.

With the trend for master baths including sizable walk-in showers as well as a luxurious soaking tub, this house checks all the boxes here as well. To top it off, the bathroom features a coffee bar to make that morning ritual even more convenient. “Something that I think is unique in the master bath is the Texas white limestone feature behind the free-standing tub that goes all the way up to the ceiling and matches the exterior stone,” offered Sara Kathryn.

Another perk for potential homeowners includes an optional wine room. “Currently, it’s designed to be a closet because typically 40 percent of our clients don’t want a wine room, but it’s prepped to convert into one. We’d just have to install the cooling equipment and change out the door. It’s easy to do,” explained Dean.

Although the potential wine room, idyllic long-distance views, pool and hot tub all sound fantastic, there’s one other perk to this property that is likely to seal the deal — all utilities (water, propane, electric and sewer) are community. “It’s unusual to have an acreage home site that’s connected to community utilities, so it’s a nice feature. Some people don’t like the idea of having to mess with a septic or worry about their well drying up,” said Dean.

What’s not unusual is Lifestyle by Stadler knocking it out of the park once again with yet another fantastic house that’s soon to be a family’s beloved dream home. “We have received great feedback on the house, so we anticipate it selling very quickly,” shared Dean. “We like to think that what sets Stadler apart is the quality of our builds and the precautions we take while building, along with utilizing the topography of the ground, meaning we design a home that works perfectly with the home site. We want everything to blend into the environment.”

“I’d also like to add that we’re very transparent with our clients. We’re all about doing it right and open. And Dean does

a really good job at providing constant photo updates for our clients, anytime something major is happening, such as the foundation being poured, or the framing. He’s always there to make sure it gets done. The clients really like being a part of that process,” added Sara Kathryn.

It’s undeniable that Stadler goes above and beyond to create intimate relationships with their clients. They even celebrate them on special occasions during their build, like for birthdays and anniversaries. “We’re really being true friends and family to our clients. Building a house is such a personal process, so we try to make the whole experience as personal as possible,” said Dean.

Sara Kathryn concurred, “We like to stay in touch even after their home is built.”

MASTER GARDENING: The Cordillera Ranch POA Invests in Employees

Driving through the rolling terrain of Cordillera Ranch, colors change, adapting to the season, and native landscapes merge with manicured beds that remain vibrant and healthy throughout the year. And you can thank the POA Maintenance team, very often seen at work, incorporating their knowledge of native landscaping and best practices to ensure that your view is scenic along the way.

It’s about to get better — and smarter. Encouraged by POA Maintenance Manager Roy Sorenson, who is the onsite horticulturist and landscape designer, and a Master Gardener himself, Jeff Cluff and Shawn Holliman have recently become certified Master Gardeners as well. The course required six weeks of classroom instruction and an additional 50 volunteer hours.

As the Ranch continues to grow, we have focused on ensuring the POA Maintenance team is accurately staffed and effectively trained to deliver on what Cordillera Ranch needs to look like. Over the past three years, we have made investments in equipment, extra personnel and training. The POA Maintenance department is divided into specialized teams with a current roster of 28 employees who man four crews: Bedding, Mowing, Irrigation and Mechanical. But when needed, it’s all hands-on deck. By sending these guys to classes, we are creating experts in these teams that can disseminate knowledge to the new staff, which makes them more valuable to the Ranch and more valuable to themselves as well. We have been sending team management to various training. For instance, our Mechanical team was trained on gate repairs, and our Mow team leader was sent to a turf class. We are investing back into our employees in ways that truly help them become experts.

Shawn, marking his 10th anniversary in June, added, “We have a growing staff and we’ll have a better grasp of basics as our entire operation gets bigger. We will be able to share our knowledge to the new recruits and hopefully it will help us retain them longer. We are also able to make more contributions to our local community and advise as residents ask us questions.”

The comprehensive horticultural education covered topics like soils composition, plant biology, flowers, shrubs, ornamentals and turf grasses, vegetables and herbs, correct pruning of trees and shrubs, planting zones, integrated pest management, pes-

ticide and herbicide applications, diseases of plants, best water management practices, drip and sprinkler irrigation, fire-wise landscaping and brush control.

Put to practical use, these new techniques will be integrated into the team’s existing program. For our temperamental USDA Zone 8b, which sees temps ranging from below freezing to 100°+ and often extreme drought conditions, water conservation is always a priority. “We are learning about ways to maximize efficiency of our irrigation systems. A lot of that involves putting like plants that have similar water needs together. In many places, drip irrigation works better and reduces water consumption drastically. All the mulch we install helps hold all the moisture in the ground for these plants and allows us to water less,” explained Shawn.

“Also, we are focusing on native and adaptive plants, which use less water and are more tolerable to heat. Tours of area gardens have introduced a wide variety of plantings that will provide more diversity in our beds, but we always remain budget-conscious. Roy propagates and purchases plants in flats that he nurtures to healthy, thriving five-gallon plants that are then used. We currently have about 700 plants waiting to go out now,” added Jeff, a six-year POA team member.

Jeff and Shawn both said they are thankful for the opportunity provided by Cordillera Ranch, and are excited to implement and share everything they have learned, saying, “We are preparing ourselves for the future of what Cordillera Ranch will become.”

PREFERRED BUILDERS TOUR

"A tradition unlike any other.”

While that’s a tagline usually reserved as reference to The Masters each spring in Augusta, GA, I’m referring to our annual Spring Preferred Builders Tour at Cordillera Ranch! This spring’s tour was quite an event with our six Preferred Builders — Pasadera Builders, Todd Glowka Builder, Garner Homes, Burdick Custom Homes, Paul Allen Custom Homes and Lifestyle by Stadler — showcasing the latest in custom building, architecture and design to nearly 300 guests on Saturday, April 6th.

DEVELOPER'S CORNER
72 | MAY/JUNE 2024

Our bi-annual tour is always a great opportunity for folks to see what’s new in the world of custom homes, while providing guests with plenty of one-on-one time with each of our builders. Attendees also got the chance to vote for their favorites in three categories during the tour, making their choice for Best Home, Kitchen and Outdoor Space of the eight homes featured during the event. Each home featured stunning designs and impeccable craftsmanship, known to ALL our Preferred Builders, so the decisions faced by our voters were tough to make.

Coming out on top with Best Home was Paul Allen Custom Homes’ model, Highpoint, at Cordillera Ridge. Highpoint sits atop a spectacular ridgeline with 20+ mile views across the Hill Country and Guadalupe River Valley. In addition to winning best home, Paul Allen took home the award for Best Kitchen as well. The champ for Best Outdoor Space was won by Todd Glowka with his incredible custom residence on Spyglass Hill in Clubs Village. Congratulations to our winners and to all our Preferred Builders for a great Spring Tour!

EARLY YEAR ACTIVITY

The tremendous turnout for our Spring Home Tour doesn’t come as a surprise, rather more of a continuation of early-year real estate momentum. Our CR Realty office has seen continued growth since the beginning of this year, with impressive activity amongst Developer-offered homesites and resale homes listed through our office. Since the existing home inventory market remains in tight supply, many of our buyers have opted to pick-up a homesite and custom build rather than waiting for more homes to come online — a sentiment echoed amongst many of the people we saw during the Preferred Builders Tour. With an impressive and diverse selection of sites currently available, and the busy spring season now upon us, we expect to see continued interest as we move into the summer months.
