“The windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror, because where we are going is more important than where we have been.” – Unknown

HELLO 2025!

In my Welcome Letter from this time last year, I noted that 2024 looked like it could turn out to be an “interesting” year. Boy, was that an understatement. I’m sure we can all look back and come up with at least 10 things that happened during the last 12 months that absolutely none of us had on our 2024 BINGO cards. That’s the nature of this time of year I suppose — looking back and reflecting on the way we thought the year would go versus the way it turned out. While there are certainly lessons to be learned from the prior year’s history, it’s a good time to move on and look forward to what’s ahead.

A new year always seems to present promise for a fresh start. We make plans for goals, and resolutions for self-improvement. And while we do our best to follow those plans and stick to our resolutions, sometimes you just have to play the hand that’s been dealt, which may mean following new paths and detours that we didn’t necessarily plan to take. And that’s okay. Enjoy the journey and keep looking out the windshield because you can’t see where you’re going if you’re looking back.

With that, I’m looking forward to you, 2025. Let’s see what you’ve got!

GOOD TIMES

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Where did 2024 go?! Before we completely turn the page to the new year, I thought I would highlight some of the big things that took place at the Club last year.

The biggest and most exciting thing was the addition of our new restaurant, Axis, as well as the opening of our new kitchen! Axis opened in April and soon became a favorite of many of our members for its beautiful new décor and a menu that featured some different and fresh items that are separate from the Ranch menu. It has continued to evolve and if you have not yet had the chance to try it, please do so. I think you will absolutely enjoy it! Soon after Axis opened, we were able to complete the new kitchen addition and remodeling of the old space. We were able to almost double the size of the old kitchen as well as bring in all new equipment. This project was a gamechanger for Chef Isaac and the culinary team as we continue to grow and will be a great asset when doing some of our larger events here at the Club. In October, we also began offering weekday breakfast in Axis, including fresh pastries and delicious coffees!

It was another solid year for the golf course as Director of Agronomy Stuart Rowland and his team continued to provide excellent playing conditions. As most of you know, we lost our Golf Course Maintenance equipment building in a fire in early October. It was devastating as we lost most of our major equipment as well as the various small tools and equipment. We are so thankful nobody was hurt, and the fire did not spread to the other buildings or areas nearby where the fire could have spread rapidly. It was amazing to watch the firefighters battle the blaze and the outstanding support of the local fire departments that responded that night. Our equipment manufacturers did an unbelievable job of getting us major equipment pieces that allowed the crew to maintain the golf course at the highest level during such a difficult time. Kudos to the entire team for their efforts as we work to rebuild that facility.

The golf operation hosted many outstanding events and had tremendous growth in the Little Linkstars junior golf program. Director of Golf Corey Roberson and his team have done a great job with our merchandising program as well

ON THE RANCH

as teaching and developing our members in their quest to play better golf.

While South Central Texas continues to be the epicenter of the drought, we did have some timely rains this spring and summer that allowed us to operate out on the Guadalupe River. Director of Outdoor Recreation Shane Reynolds and his team were able to put a few folks out on the river for floating and fishing trips. We are all praying for more rain as we move in 2025!

We were happy to announce in November that Alejandro Chong was promoted to Director of Racquet Sports at the Club. I know he will elevate our Tennis program through new programming and special events. Pickleball continues to grow and it has been awesome to see how many people are playing at different times of the day!

Director of Fitness and Wellness Tamra Christiansen has been a wonderful leader for that part of the Club. Member feedback regarding Personal Training, Group X, Pilates and other various offerings has been great. It is always awesome to see the Fitness Center in January as everyone is still going strong with their New Year’s

resolutions! I won’t get into how that compares to February. Ha!

Finally, Cordillera Ranch Signature Vacations continued to draw strong interest as Director of Membership Brianna Botine and Player Development Manager Katie Dillard hosted a member trip to South Africa! It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that our members raved about for months. We look forward to hosting more trips in the near future.

As always, please let us know how we can help you enjoy your Club experience more. We are looking forward to all that 2025 will bring, and we wish you a year full of good health and happiness!

HOMETOWN: McAllen, Texas

FAMILY MEMBERS: Judy and Jesse Naranjo, parents; Andrea and Daniel Naranjo, brother and sister-in-law

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE WORK IN THIS FIELD?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been around the game of golf. From watching golf tournaments on TV with my family to going out to the driving range with my dad during my High School years while on the Golf Team, everything I associate with golf has been positive. I decided to attend the University of the Incarnate Word and major in Fashion Merchandising with a concentration in Business. Fusing both my passion for fashion and love for the game of golf, the golf merchandising path was the perfect path for me.

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR CORDILLERA RANCH?

I started out my career at TPC San Antonio where I learned under a great supervisor, as well. This is where I was able to take what I was learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life working situations. After eight years with the PGA TOUR, I took the Director of Retail role at San Antonio Country Club. This is where I was able to take what I learned at TPC San Antonio and apply it in a different environment. After three years of building relationships and building their business, I decided to take the leap to Cordillera Ranch. I can’t wait to collaborate with the members and staff to help create a special Golf Club experience.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH?

My favorite part of my job is the people I work with. We are truly a team with a common goal that feels more like a family. I was blessed with the opportunity to work alongside Nick Madden and Aaron Killian Smith in the past, and so thankful to be working with them again.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE?

My most rewarding professional experience has been being part of something bigger than myself in every club I’ve had the opportunity to work with. Setting a goal and achieving it together with a team is truly the best feeling.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Passionate, Fun and Creative

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I love to spend time with my family. Most of my family on my dad’s side all live in San Antonio and we are within a 10-mile radius of each other! We are so blessed to live close by each other and definitely take advantage of it. One of our family traditions is Family Fridays where anyone who’s available gets together for dinner, we catch up and are able to spend quality time with each other in between our busy weeks.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO HAPPINESS?

My secret to happiness is being grounded in faith and family. I am blessed to have the best family around me who challenges me to become a better person every day.

EXCLUDING FOOD AND WATER, WHAT TWO THINGS WOULD YOU WANT IF STRANDED ON AN ISLAND?

A blanket because even in 100-degree weather, I still find a way to be cold! And lip balm — the addiction is real!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON, AND WHY?

My favorite season is winter because of the fashion! I love all the boots and coats we get to wear during our short winter season in South Texas. Kind of ironic since I’m always cold!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

Italian food! I love all kinds of pastas and bread!

With Faith as Their Foundation

JANE

AND PERRY RICKEL

Although Jane and Perry Rickel will be the first ones to tell you there’s nothing unique about them, after just a few minutes of sweet and humorous banter, it’s clear to see they’re actually quite special.

Photography
Teran :: Family portraits by Kayla Jane Photography

Perry and Jane’s warm hearts and strong faith make for a genuine and authentic connection, not only between the delightful couple and their children, but also with the Cordillera Ranch community that they’re happily now a part of, as well as each and every person that has the pleasure to cross their path.

In fact, it’s their faith that served as the foundation for their relationship very early on. Perry and Jane’s story began in their teenage years when they first met at a high school youth group in Lubbock, Texas, where they both grew up. Even then, there was something unique about their connection.

“Our fathers were small business owners in Lubbock and we're both from larger families, so our early years were pretty similar. We watched our parents sacrifice their own comfort for their families and for the future of their businesses,” said Jane. “Our parents expected us to work hard and they set a great example,” agreed Perry.

“I remember the first time I saw Perry. He was cruising up on a motorcycle at a high school youth group event. We met and sat together, then he nonchalantly shared with me that his parents didn’t even know he had a motorcycle. As a rule-follower, I was naturally horrified, so my resolve to stay away from him lasted until he asked me out a couple of days later. He was really attractive,” Jane laughed. “We dated a little, but we were so different, we ended up having just a really great friendship.”

Over the next several years, their lives crisscrossed often, establishing a bond that was rooted in an enduring friendship that became a steady foundation for what would later blossom into a lifelong love story — one marked by mutual respect, faith and a deep understanding and appreciation of one another.

Perry and Jane both attended Texas Tech University, where Perry studied Public Relations and Marketing and Jane studied Education. After graduation, Perry took a job in Dallas, but then ended up moving back to Lubbock to take over the West Texas regional sales rep position for a surgical device company. This is when their “friend zone” status began to disintegrate. “As we spent more time together, we realized that our friendship had evolved, so we began to date exclusively,” shared Perry.

It was about this time that Perry was offered a job in Denver, Colorado, working for a real estate lender. “Three months later, we were engaged and planning a wedding,” said Perry. “I started my own real estate lending company in April and we were married in June of 1996.”

“Skiing, mountain biking, and doing whatever travel we could afford made those early years in Colorado a lot of fun,” Jane recalled. “I was building a small business, Jane was finishing her student teaching, and we were youth leaders at our church, but we were always looking ahead and thinking about the family we would share,” said Perry.

“One day I was listening to a woman tell her story about adopting her daughter and I felt something shift deep inside,” said Jane. “Although neither of our families were built through adoption, Jane and I felt that God was calling us to build our family through adoption,” added Perry.

JHANSI, AVERY, CALEB AND GRACE

Still in their twenties, the Rickels decided to begin their biological family, then pursue adoption when they were a little older. They welcomed Caleb in 1999, Avery in 2003, and Grace in 2005.

“Our lives were extremely full and all about shepherding young hearts and minds. Those days seem like a blur — school activities, sports, clubs, work and always trying to end the day with family dinner,” remembered Perry.

The Rickels also shared their love of skiing with the kids. “From the time the kids were 3 years old, we had them on skis. Perry taught each of them to ski and for years we spent almost every weekend in the mountains,” said Jane, “We made some great memories.”

In 2006, Perry and a partner launched Marrick Medical. Marrick creates access to healthcare for people in their time of need.

The family decided to move forward with adoption in 2011, after much discussion and prayer. Four years later, the whole family traveled to Madurai, India, to welcome their beautiful, 4-year-old girl, Jhansi, into the family. “We were matched with Jhansi a year before we were allowed to meet her in person. That was extremely tough for all of us, but she’s a Rickel

through-and-through. God had us in mind for her and her in mind for us,” Jane confided.

Perry and Jane are quick to note that their family’s story has been one of continual growth. Caleb has since moved from Denver to San Antonio and is going back to school at San Antonio College, where he is studying Marketing. Avery and Grace both attend Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where Avery is studying Interior Design and Grace is studying Business. And Jhansi, the only one still living at home, is thriving at The Winston School in San Antonio.

Now, after almost three decades and four children — Caleb, Avery, Grace and Jhansi — their journey is a testament to living with purpose and embracing every chapter with open hearts.

“Our faith is the foundation of everything we do,” said Jane. “It’s what led us to adoption, what strengthens our family, and what shapes the way we serve our community.”

Adventure has also played a central role in the Rickels’ lives, from Perry’s love of motorcycles to the family’s shared passion for travel. Together, the Rickel family has explored far-off destinations, including Africa, where they helped support a school that grew from 12 students to over 2,000. Their travels are as

much about giving back as they are about discovering new places, and they hope to continue exploring together.

“In 2020 we decided to move back to Texas. Colorado had been great to our family during our working years, but it was time to return to our roots,” Perry explained. They weren’t just seeking a change of scenery — they were looking for a place that felt like home. “Our community in Colorado was very special and were hoping to replicate it — Texas style,” he added.

Their search led them to Cordillera Ranch. From the moment they drove through the gates, Perry and Jane knew they’d found it. “The rolling hills, sculptural live oak, wildlife and especially the golf course — it was like stepping into the place we’d always imagined,” said Perry.

At home, the Rickels love nothing more than spending time with family and friends. "Family dinners remain important

to us," said Perry, with Jane adding, “We’re so grateful that our extended family is close by — it’s a joy to have the house filled with young cousins and friends during holidays and get-togethers.”

Looking to the future, Perry and Jane hope to travel more, serve their community further, and savor the slower pace that Cordillera Ranch offers. “None of us are promised tomorrow,” reflected Perry. “For now, we’re just grateful to be here, building a life we love and spending time with the people who matter most. Our move to Cordillera Ranch has been a blessing. We're closer to family and enjoying building friendships that we believe will last a lifetime."

As they celebrate 29 years of marriage this coming June, Jane and Perry Rickel are a reminder that family, faith and a little bit of adventure can make life not just fulfilling, but extraordinary.

GOLF IS HARD

Golf is an interesting game — it’s full of failure with brief glimpses of success. What other sport or game do you play where your success rate is so low? Think about it, we technically miss almost every shot that we hit … in reality, we only “make” 18 shots per round — the others are all “misses.” Bear with me here — this article is actually about how great golf is even though it’s full of failure.

A couple years ago, I had a young student who was a perfectionist; he expected every shot to be the right height, distance and curvature. That’s simply not realistic — even the pros on TV don’t execute at that level. He was setting an unachievable goal. By definition, a goal should be achievable, measurable, task-oriented and have a defined timeline. Even after some heavy mental coaching, this particular student stepped away from the game for a little bit but did eventually return with a different outlook and is now enjoying the game for different reasons. Golf is hard and can be painfully disappointing, but it can also be extremely rewarding. I think golf checks at least one of these boxes for every player:

• Social Golfer: The game is a way to spend time with friends. The camaraderie created on the golf course is unmatched and can last a lifetime — most other sports can’t fulfill that second part.

• Competitive Golfer: The player who loves competition. It doesn’t just have to be a formal or monetary competition; it could just be for bragging rights over your buddy.

• Escapist: The game can provide an escape from the daily grind. For some, golf can be a distraction and an opportunity to relax … it’s the old saying — a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day in the office.

• Grinder: This is the player who loves trying to master the game. That might be through lessons, beating balls, or the endless pursuit of making the perfect swing.

Personally, I enjoy golf for all four reasons. The competitive box can easily be the most frustrating as it’s filled with the most failure. The grinder box comes in second in this particular category — especially if your efforts are misguided and you aren’t seeing results. I’ve experienced just about every kind of up and down that golf could possibly throw at you. From winning an STPGA event to loosing in a playoff in another STPGA event at my home course to working on my game all year to compete in the PGA Professional Championship only to miss the cut. The highs are just high enough to keep you coming back for more. By the way, this is all relative — for some players, these highs and lows are that first time breaking 90 then instantly shooting

in the 100s again two days later. Golf is funny like that — the high handicapper says, “I’d be happy if I could just break 80 every time.” However, that’s not true … once you get to that point, you want to break 70, then you want to break 70 all the time, and so on. It doesn’t end — there’s always a pursuit for something better, which is just one of the things that makes golf awesome.

The social side is pretty simple and our 9-hole ladies at Cordillera Ranch are the perfect example. Many of them are new to the game and while they enjoy playing a little competition, they enjoy each other’s company even more. Many of our guys’ groups are the same — we’ve got a few groups who like to play early in the morning and, while they may gamble a bit, it just helps add to the fodder. Golf is what connected them in the first place and has become a vehicle to grow their friendship. On top of that, they are always open to having new members join their game. We have

another group of guys that like to play around noon and who don’t really gamble, but you can always count on seeing them in the Men’s Grille before and after their round just about every day. Golf has become part of their daily routine and the Club has become their version of “Cheers.”

Golf is hard, but it can provide way more than just the challenge of the game. I can’t think of any other sport or activity that connects people the way that golf does — I’ve played with teachers, mechanics, musicians, professional athletes and a past president. Regardless of social or economic background, all golfers fall into at least one of the buckets above and have one thing in common — a love for the game.

CHALLENGES. OPPORTUNITIES. MOVING FORWARD.

Fall has been a busy season for the Agronomy team. This important season kicks off after all the fun of the Ladies’ Ranch Roundup, when we begin our greens aerification process. At the conclusion of this process in October, we have now seen the extraordinary benefit of the deep vertical slicing (Graden device) coupled with the normal aerification of punching holes and backfilling with sand. The bentgrass greens continue to improve season over season and moving into this winter, we can confidently say they are in great health! Currently, the greens are firm, fast and fun to play.

During the aerification and greens care week, we also completed a lake-edge restoration on #11. We experienced some erosion from heavy rains after renovating the lake. We deployed the SOX technology that helps maintain the lake edge stability over time. This is an actual “sock-like” device that is anchored into the shoreline and allows for the turf to root in, further increasing the long-term stability. The process was completed in only three days during the course closure and never interrupted play.

Each season is never without a challenge or two and this October we were hit with a hard one. On the evening of October 17th, our primary equipment building burned to the ground. This facility housed our Lead Technician’s office and nearly all of our turf mowing equipment. We are blessed and thankful that the only losses were those that are replaceable. No one was injured in the fire. In February of 2024, the Agronomy team cleaned every square inch of the building, repainted, epoxied the floors, and reorganized with all new storage spaces. Later in April, the fleet of equipment was all replaced and essentially, we had a new facility we were excited to have. This made the October fire not just unfortunate, but a sad day as the entire team watched their hard work burn down. The team rallied together and we were able to open the course with only one day of closure! Being able to open the course for play was the work of our very tight-knit golf community. Local Superintendents all offered equipment and tools, and themselves, to help in any way possible. Toro and John Deere were instrumental in quickly providing enough mowing equipment so we didn’t skip a beat. Playing the course, you would never know we lost everything, and that level of hospitality is only because of our amazing golf community!

With every challenge comes new opportunities. We are getting underway with the rebuilding of the facility and we are taking the time to capture the opportunity of building a more efficient and modern facility. The new space will feature a new drive-through, office, parts inventory storage and mower sharpening area. The team will have new tool storage areas and the ability to keep more equipment indoors and out of the elements. At the conclusion of the rebuild, look for a hosting of a “Behind-the-Scenes” tour where we will showcase the facility and give you a peek at how the team operates and takes care of our grounds.

The winter projects are in full swing as we are working diligently on our initiative of constant improvement. Other projects in progress include rebuilding bridges, renovating comfort sta-

tion landscapes, introducing new plants around greens and tees, and intensive crew training for the upcoming golf season. All of these projects keep us engaged and excited to see our members enjoying time on the Ranch.

We are looking forward to another great golf season this spring, and we are excited to have you, your families and guests out enjoying the course as well.

WHY YOU SHOULD PLAY TENNIS A GAME FOR BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT

Tennis is a sport that has captivated millions around the world for centuries. Often referred to as the “sport for a lifetime,” tennis is much more than just a game; it’s a full experience that offers numerous physical, mental and social benefits. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, tennis provides a rewarding way to stay fit, challenge yourself, and build lasting relationships. Here’s a closer look at why you should pick up a racket and start playing tennis today.

1. PHYSICAL BENEFITS: A FULL-BODY WORKOUT

Tennis is a total-body workout that combines cardio, strength and flexibility training. Here are just a few physical benefits of playing tennis:

• Improves Cardiovascular Health: Tennis involves plenty of running and sudden bursts of energy, which boosts heart rate and promotes cardiovascular health. Studies show that playing tennis regularly can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and hypertension.

• Enhances Strength and Agility: The sport demands quick movements, often in different directions, which help build muscle strength and improve agility. This keeps the legs, arms and core in peak condition and increases flexibility.

• Burns Calories: Tennis is a high-intensity sport that can burn a lot of calories. A single game can burn between 400 to 600 calories per hour, depending on the intensity of play.

• Boosts Endurance and Coordination: Regular tennis practice builds stamina and improves hand-eye coordination, which translates to better balance and fine motor skills in daily activities.

2.MENTAL BENEFITS: SHARPENING FOCUS AND STRATEGIC THINKING

Playing tennis is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. The game requires constant decision-making, strategic thinking and a high level of focus:

• Improves Concentration and Mental Clarity: Tennis demands that players stay alert, anticipate opponents’ moves, and execute quick reactions. This level of concentration has been shown to enhance cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills.

• Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Physical exercise, like tennis, releases endorphins that help reduce stress and improve mood. The rhythmic, focused nature of tennis can also serve as a form of meditation, allowing players to tune out external stresses and focus on the game.

• Encourages Strategic Thinking: Tennis is not just about hitting the ball back and forth; it requires a tactical approach. Players need to think a few steps ahead, plan their shots, and adapt to their opponent's weaknesses. These strategic elements can help sharpen the mind and improve quick decision-making skills.

3.SOCIAL BENEFITS: BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND CONFIDENCE

Whether you’re playing doubles with a friend or participating in a local tennis club, the sport encourages social interaction and helps build meaningful connections:

• Fosters Teamwork and Communication: In doubles tennis, teamwork is crucial, requiring communication, coordination and trust. This aspect of the game fosters skills that can translate into stronger professional and personal relationships.

• Opportunities for Networking: Many business professionals and community leaders play tennis, making it a great way to expand your social network. Tennis clubs and tournaments also offer opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds and forge new friendships.

• Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence: Tennis provides a measurable sense of progress as players develop skills and achieve personal goals. This feeling of accomplishment can enhance self-esteem and inspire confidence, both on and off the court.

4. LIFELONG ACCESSIBILITY: A SPORT FOR ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS

Unlike some sports that may become difficult to play with age, tennis can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Here’s why tennis truly is a “sport for a lifetime”:

• Adaptability for All Ages: Tennis courts are accessible worldwide, and various formats, such as singles, doubles or mixed doubles, allow players of different skill levels to compete together.

• Low Risk of Injury: When played safely and with proper technique, tennis has a relatively low risk of injury, making it suitable for people of all ages.

• Can Be Played Year-Round: Whether indoors or outdoors, tennis can be played throughout the year, offering consistent opportunities for exercise and enjoyment.

A YEAR OF PROGRESS! JANUARY

SETTING THE FOUNDATION FOR FITNESS SUCCESS

Welcome to “A Year of Progress,” our new series designed to help you make 2025 your best fitness year ever — step by step, every issue. I will share simple yet powerful ways to build a fitness routine that grows with you, allowing flexibility, fun and real progress. Think of this as a marathon, not a sprint; we’ll focus on creating a solid foundation in January to help you thrive all year.

STEP 1: START WITH STRENGTH AND STABILITY

In January, we focus on the basics: strength, stability and mobility. This is the foundational phase. Think of this as laying the groundwork for the goals and challenges you’ll take on later in the year. Here’s where you start:

>> Functional Strength Training Basics: Choose exercises that engage multiple muscle groups, like squats, lunges and pushups. Aim for two days a week, with 15-20 minutes each session.

>> Stability Matters: Balance-focused exercises like planks or single-leg stands are key. Being that our bodies are upright most of the day, the core is best worked in active positions, rather than laying down. More core work strengthens and improves balance, which enhances overall body control.

>> Mobilize to Energize: Stretching and mobility work may seem small, but these simple moves prepare your muscles and joints for future challenges. Try dedicating a few minutes postworkout to basic stretches or light yoga. We have StretchLab here at Cordillera every two weeks, so using their expertise is another tool in your belt for fitness.

STEP 2: BUILD CONSISTENCY WITH SMALL GOALS

One of the biggest obstacles in fitness is staying consistent. Let’s make that easier by setting small, achievable goals that fit your lifestyle. Rather than aiming for a giant leap, think baby steps!

>> Set a Weekly Workout Goal: Rather than planning every workout for the month, aim for two to three sessions per week. This feels doable, avoids burnout, and lets you gradually build a routine.

>> Track Your Wins: Use a fitness journal or app to note each completed workout. Progress, even if it’s just showing up, counts as a win.

>> Celebrate Small Victories: Whether it’s hitting all your weekly sessions or feeling stronger after a workout, recognize and reward those milestones.

STEP 3: MAKE MOVEMENT ENJOYABLE

A workout doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym. This year, think of movement as any activity that gets your body engaged, whether it’s dancing in your living room or going for a hike with friends.

>> Find Your Fun: Choose movement that feels enjoyable. Explore a new group class, go for a walk in nature, or even try a dance party at home. The goal is to find something you look forward to.

>> Community Boost: Social support goes a long way. Consider inviting friends or joining a fitness group to make movement feel like a shared adventure.

STEP 4: PLAN FOR PROGRESS

As we move into March, we’ll shift focus to building endurance and strength. But for now, enjoy the simplicity of building a consistent routine with gentle workouts and small, rewarding challenges.

>> Looking Ahead: By the time spring arrives, you’ll be ready for our next installment in March, where we’ll add a bit more structure to your routine, building endurance as we prep for warmer months. So, here’s to setting the groundwork, staying consistent, and enjoying every step.

After all, fitness is a journey, not a destination — let’s make it a fun one!

WHAT WE POURED IN 2024

TEQUILA VS. VODKA: THE SPIRIT SHOWDOWN

In 2024, tequila and vodka went head-to-head as the most popular spirits. Tequila made an impressive showing with 238 gallons (900 bottles) poured, driven by the popularity of margaritas, straight tequila shots and other handcrafted cocktails. However, vodka stole the spotlight, clocking in at 272 gallons (1,030 bottles). Members embraced vodka for its unmatched versatility.

And the winner? By a slim margin, vodka takes the crown for 2024!

TOP POURING RED WINE:

Among our extensive wine selection, Cabernet stole the spotlight as the most-poured varietal.

CHAMPAGNE!

Too often, Champagne is relegated to weddings and holidays, and otherwise ignored. While its festive, bubbly deliciousness certainly augments those occasions, it also makes a fantastic everyday libation that is a great match with food. In this article, let us talk about Champagne and in our March/April issue, we will discuss the most common types of other sparkling wines and the differences among them.

ALL THINGS CHAMPAGNE

For a very long time, U.S. labeling laws were quite lax about regulating the use of European place names on American wines. Terms like Chablis, Burgundy and Champagne were commonly implemented, even though the wines described were often nothing like the originals. This oversight has been somewhat corrected, but habits were created, and habits can be hard to break. That is why so many people casually use the term Champagne to refer to any sparkling wine at all. But it’s not! Read on to find out why.

WHAT DOES CHAMPAGNE TASTE LIKE?

Have you ever noticed that Champagne smells like fresh baked bread? This distinct quality occurs because Champagne is made in the Traditional Method (often called the Champagne Method), in which the second fermentation takes place inside a sealed bottle. CO², one of the primary byproducts of fermentation, has nowhere to go and so becomes dissolved in the wine, creating bubbles, and the liquid has more contact with the yeast (aka the "lees"). This subtle nuance differentiates Champagne, giving it a creamy luxurious mouthfeel that provides a delightful counterpoint to its high acidity.

WHERE IS CHAMPAGNE MADE?

Champagne can only come from the region of the same name in northern France, and it is only made from one or a combination of these three grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. If 100% Chardonnay, the Champagne is a blanc de blancs (white of whites); these can show great elegance and finesse. A blanc de noirs (white of blacks) is white Champagne made from one or both of the red grapes. These are often richer and more full-bodied than blanc de blancs. Rosé Champagne is produced by adding red base wine to white until the desired color is achieved. This occurs before the second fermentation and is one of very few times in the world of winemaking that any type of Rosé is made this way. The vast majority of a Champagne house’s production is non-vintage, or NV, meaning the base wine (the term used to describe the wine before the second fermentation) is a blend

of lots from multiple vintages, principally from the past three years or so. The immense skill of the winemaker is evident in the remarkable consistency these NV versions display from year to year. In exceptionally good years, which may occur a few times a decade, the houses “declare a vintage” and set aside certain lots for the purpose of making a vintage Champagne, with all of the juice coming from that same year. Additionally, producers will utilize the best fruit from the best vineyards for their finest offering. These are called a prestige cuvée or tête de cuvée, and they most often are also a single vintage. A well-known example is Moët & Chandon’s Dom Perignon.

Another key differentiator in Champagne production is aging. By law, NV bottles must age for a minimum of 15 months before release, with at least 12 months resting on the spent yeast cells (the lees) left in the bottle after that second fermentation. This is known as sur lie aging, and many houses exceed that 15-month requirement. For vintage Champagnes, the minimum is three years aging although, once again, most houses exceed that number. Before bottling, the lees must be removed for the sake of clarity. This is called disgorging, and since a bit of Champagne is lost in the process, the bottle must be topped up with reserve wine, called liqueur d’expédition. The winemaker will add enough sugar (called dosage) to the liqueur to reach the desired level of sweetness for the final product.

CHAMPAGNE SWEETNESS LEVELS

• Brut Nature: 0.3% sugar

• Extra Brut: 0 to 0.6% sugar

• Brut: less than 1.2% sugar

• Extra Dry: 1.2 to 1.7% sugar

• Sec: 1.7 to 3.2% sugar

• Demi-Sec: 3.2 to 5% sugar

• Doux: 5% sugar or more

WHEN TO DRINK CHAMPAGNE

Champagne is the gold standard of sparkling wine and the classic for toasting big events, but don't discount its ability to be a partner in a meal. Champagne, especially as it gets older, pairs perfectly throughout a meal of many courses and flavors. Keep up your Champagne toasts, but also try making this a partner at your dinner table.

Cheers!

HUNTING

HIGH FENCE VS. LOW FENCE

The topic of hunting high fence properties is a fairly common topic I have with members, my friends and family. Typically, high-fence hunting grounds are viewed as “cheating” or “fish in a barrel” when mentioned by your everyday deer hunter who pays for his own deer lease year after year, and spends his summer weekends filling feeders, checking cameras and planting food plots all off of his own dime. But what purpose does a “high fence” actually serve? And does the presence of this high fence really mean there are monster deer around every corner?

Each of us has our own code of ethics. The key, of course, is to try to live by the standards we set. Our Texas deer hunting tradition is hundreds of years old. It is rich and honorable. However, there are many different styles of deer hunting. If a guy in Wisconsin wants to do a deer drive, don’t condemn him because you prefer to sit in a tree.

I do not consider myself a trophy hunter. I was raised as a meat hunter, although I am thankful and happy to shoot a big buck if given the opportunity. All of the private leases I’ve been on over the years have been “low fence” properties, however, I have hunted properties with high fences, primarily for hogs. I have never hunted whitetail deer in a high fenced property.

High fence does not always mean trophy deer. Likewise, the concept behind a high fence is not always keeping the big deer in, but also keeping other deer out. Someone with a high fence property most likely cares about the deer and wildlife population, and considers it a significant investment into having quality wildlife genetics on their property. I have also hunted properties that were only partially high fenced. The property may border a highway, river or major roadway, and the landowner decided to put a high fence on that side in order to better protect his wildlife, and motorists.

High fence does come with a motive, but it is not always the

desire to make a profit off of selling hunts and big deer. As I just mentioned, some landowners spend a lot of their own time and effort into feeding protein and minerals, growing good whitetail genetics over the course of many years, and they don’t want deer from other areas messing that up. A whitetail deer doe’s home range can be as small as a quarter of a mile, and a buck out of the rut can be roughly one mile. So, unless there is heavy pressure, a whitetail deer property manager does not normally worry about where his deer will wander off to, until November.

November is a different ball game. Bucks can travel for miles looking for love, and likewise, push does into unfamiliar territory. There has been research that show bucks will travel as far as 10 miles beyond that buck’s home range. This is where land managers want that high fence. It does not only keep your big bucks closer to home, but it also keeps other outside wandering bucks from potentially breeding into your herd.

I believe high fence comes down to what you are using your property for, and what your intentions are. If you do not have a huge range, yet intend on selling high-dollar hunts on big deer, my argument for free-range whitetail will have some holes in it. However, if you are a private landowner, you take pride in your deer herd and your own investments into the property and the deer themselves, then why not high fence? As long as your property has the natural resources to sustain your herd, how is it any different than paying money to improve your stands, your food plots or your minerals. Yes, affordability does come into play. Many ranchers cannot afford a high fence, and there are many who can. But if you have the means and you have the need, I say go for it!

A lot can be said about this topic. I am not here to change your opinion, but simply to give you mine. I’m not here to talk bad about high fence ranches or low fence leases. Yes, I consider myself a low-fence, free-range hunter. But I also believe high fences can be a valuable tool when it comes to whitetail management. And I fully support those who use them for such purposes.

BEES AND GOLF COURSES

A long-standing interest of mine has been the benefits of using honey and bee keeping. I have enjoyed honey since I was a child and there are many benefits of having honey in your diet. Honey contains a variety of nutrients, it’s rich in antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels than regular sugar. Research has shown it to promote heart health, promote burn and wound healing, and help suppress coughing with children.

As golf courses continue to embrace sustainability efforts to better align with nature, many course superintendents have added on-property honeybee hives. Our Director of Agronomy, Stu Rowland, and myself have been discussing introducing bees near the golf course at Cordillera Ranch, and we are targeting the spring to set up some hives. Stu has managed bees at a previous course he directed and I will be an eager-to-learn student in the art of beekeeping.

Not only do the bees help pollinate plants throughout the golf course, they sometimes provide a byproduct of locally produced honey. In the case of The Sanctuary on Sanibel Island, Florida, the source is adjacent to the eighth tee, in an area that was converted from maintained turfgrass to wildflowers in 2010. The Sanctuary

has a revenue-generating program from selling the harvested honey to its members. At Cordillera Ranch, we have not decided where our beekeeping operation will go, but we are certain it will help our wildflowers on the course, be a positive addition to the environment on the Ranch, and hopefully provide an opportunity to harvest the honey for gifting or retail sales.

Bees can also serve as an indicator of the course’s overall health, which reinforces the concept that healthy golf environments foster healthy bees and pollinators. According to the American Beekeeping Federation, one-third of all the food Americans eat is directly or indirectly derived from honeybee pollination. Nearly 80 percent of the world’s flowering plants require animal pollination.

Sadly, for bees, they face numerous possible threats including pests and pathogens, reduced habitat, lack of nutrition, and exposure to pesticides. And while wild, native bees can be affected by pesticides, “colony collapse is a phenomenon that is only related to honeybees,” said Dr. Joshua Campbell of the University of Florida’s department of entomology and nematology. Additional factors that can contribute to colony collapse include viruses and other insects. “As long as hives are managed properly, they can offset honeybee losses,” said Campbell.

The swapping of manicured turf acreage for native wildflowers increases native bee habitats on golf courses, said Campbell — a sweet result for courses seeking to better balance their own ecosystem.

Beekeeping can be a very successful endeavor on our golf course. The habitat on the course and surrounding land lends itself to enhancing pollinators and thriving bee colonies. Cordillera Ranch will not only benefit from the environmental stewardship and positive public perception, but we will also reap the rewards of harvesting the delectable honey!

KENDALL COUNTY KIDS EXPERIENCE A CHRISTMAS FILLED WITH JOY

In 2023, Cordillera Cares began partnering with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Foundation Blue Santa program. Last year, 612 children received new Christmas toys with the assistance of the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, local businesses and individuals. Cordillera Cares was honored to provide every one of those children with a Christmas stocking filled with age-appropriate toys, thanks to the generous donations from our members and staff.

This year, we supported over 700 children! We are grateful for the overwhelming response from residents and employees who volunteered their time to help stuff stockings and distribute them at the Blue Santa event.

Our efforts began on Friday, November 8, with the Blue Santa Pickleball Toy Drive. Forty people attended, and the energy was contagious with many donning Santa hats and festive athletic attire. Everyone brought at least one toy and was excited to contribute to this mission.

On Wednesday, December 4, Cordillera Cares participated in the Ugly Sweater Gold Rush to continue spreading the word about our goals and collecting donations. Our table was filled with toys and goodies destined for the stockings, and members enjoyed seeing what they were helping to create. The Gold Rush event featured Christmas carolers and a festive photo booth, allowing everyone to get into the holiday spirit. It was a very successful evening, and a testament to the tie that binds our community together.

Our final toy donation drive was the Mimosa & Prosecco Tennis Toy Drive held on Friday, December 13. More than 20 tennis players participated, enjoying the opportunity to play for an important cause while toasting to the holidays.

We reached our goal with 718 stockings and were ready to stuff them. Our “Santa’s Workshop” was active every day, with Cordillera employees and residents working together to ensure all 700+ stockings were filled and prepared for the big day.

The Blue Santa Toy Drive took place on Saturday, December 21, and it was heartwarming to see all the support that the Kendall County Sheriff’s Foundation receives to make this event a success. As cars drove through, the road was lined with beautiful Christmas lights. Several tents offered goodies such as cookies, stockings and presents. The kids loved seeing both Santa and the Grinch as they welcomed the cars.

This has been our most significant philanthropy event of the year, and we are incredibly thankful for all the support from the Cordillera Ranch team and residents, which enables us to help our local community. For us, the joy of giving is as powerful as the joy of receiving.

A CONVERSATION WITH

KRISTIN CRAFT

SUPERINTENDENT OF BOERNE ISD

Kristin Craft, Ed.D., was named Superintendent of Boerne ISD in December 2023. As she reaches her one-year anniversary, Dr. Craft sat down with Editor Trisha Doucette to discuss her early observations, goals for Boerne ISD, and the accomplishments that are on the horizon.

SINCE JOINING BOERNE ISD, WHAT STEPS HAVE YOU TAKEN TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY?

Throughout the spring, I spent a lot of time in Listen & Learn sessions. I had already developed a deep appreciation for Boerne during my interview process, but getting to know more of our community was a great learning experience. We had incredible participation and during over 40 sessions that I held with staff, students, parents, business partners and community members, I heard so many stories, traditions, hopes, dreams and points of pride. It’s clear that maintaining our small-town feel is very important, and ensuring strong academic outcomes and responsible planning for our growing district are top priorities. Through these sessions, we developed my priorities for this school year.

Dr. Craft’s Early Priorities: Early matters, and a strong start delivers lasting impact. As educators, we know that the critical shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” happens in 3rd grade. Early foundational skills are critical for future success and teachers are working extremely hard to ensure that every child is on grade level in Reading and Math at the end of pre-k, kindergarten and 1st and 2nd grades. We recognized a need to create comprehensive, coordinated and collaborative services to students with complex needs. We are developing a “System of Care” framework to support the safety, health, engagement and enrichment of these students and their families. For our older students, college

and career readiness are top-of-mind, and making sure that students have all the support needed to excel in high school and beyond is our mission. Teachers and leaders examine and work on early indicators with a goal of 100% of our students meeting college or career readiness indicators. And, as we orient ourselves to the future, we are engaging in long-term planning. This requires intentional collaboration, and Boerne ISD is fortunate to have such passionate and involved parents and community members. Conversations with these folks revealed growing concern over cell phone usage by middle school students. We sent a survey to these parents over the summer and quickly realized that this concern was shared and that we had support from parents on creating limitations regarding cell phone use. We want our kids to be kids as long as possible, which means real, face-to-face conversations throughout the day.

THESE ARE INCREDIBLE GOALS TO CREATE IN SUCH A SHORT TIME! WHAT OTHER INFRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING?

We are fortunate to have wonderful buildings and great resources in Boerne ISD. While we build for the future, we remain committed to ensure our legacy buildings are well maintained and can be adapted to meet the needs of modern learning. We are renovating libraries, creating flexible learning spaces, integrating technology, and implementing sustainable practices to be more environmentally responsible and enhance student learning. Boerne

ISD also prioritizes safe and secure learning environments, including each school having a School Resource Officer as well as making various security improvements like secure entry points, visitor check-in systems, perimeter fencing and other measures that allow everyone within our buildings to focus on the important teaching, learning and growth they’re doing together.

When it comes to curriculum, we are focused on allowing students to engage in hands-on, real-world learning that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our approach to learning is personalized, interdisciplinary, and aimed at preparing all students for whatever challenge they tackle next. By leveraging data to assist teacher teams in tailoring educational experiences to student needs and learning styles, we promote and enhance their learning. BISD schools are integrating subjects across the curriculum to enhance relevance and encourage students to think critically about real-world issues. Job-embedded trainings such as instructional training and professional learning communities, along with workshops on modern teaching methodologies, technology integration and instructional strategies, support teacher teams.

YOU’VE QUICKLY BECOME KNOWN FOR BRINGING A FRESH APPROACH TO BISD. WHAT NEW INITIATIVES AND EXPERIENCES CAN STUDENTS AND FAMILIES LOOK FORWARD TO?

Well, that’s great to hear! It’s truly a collaborative effort, and our staff are implementing several exciting initia-

tives designed to enhance educational opportunities and better prepare students for their future careers. In addition to our established Cybersecurity Early College, we kicked off our second Pathway to Technology Early College High School Health Services at BHS. The program is aimed at bridging the gap between high school and higher education, and allows students to earn college credit — up to an Associate’s Degree — while gaining hands-on experience in the health science field. We are partnering with San Antonio College and healthcare providers so that students can access internships and real-world learning experiences that align with industry standards, setting them on a path to successful careers in healthcare. We also launched a real estate program of study designed to prepare students for careers in the real estate sector. This program provides foundational knowledge of real estate principles and guides students through the licensing process. BISD in responding to the growing demand for professionals in real estate by equipping them with both the educational and practical skills necessary for success. Spanish immersion at Cibolo Creek Elementary School is available for English-proficient students. Students learn core subjects in Spanish, fostering bilingualism and biliteracy with the goal of preparing our students for a globalized world where language skills are extremely valuable. And, we are expanding Project Lead the Way curriculum at the elementary level to underscore BISD’s commitment to STEM education. This hands-on, project-based curriculum encourages creativity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. By introducing this program earlier, BISD aims to spark students’ interest in the STEM fields early on.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR APPROACH TO MANAGING THE DISTRICT’S PATH FORWARD?

The future of BISD is rooted in our Strategic Plan, which sets clear goals and a bold path for the next five years. By 2028, every student will engage in innovative learning experiences that prepare them for college, careers or military service. We believe in fostering a culture where

100% of staff are dedicated to professional growth, ensuring our budget fully supports the needs of the district. Most importantly, we want our families and community to feel deeply valued and to know they are essential partners in building a foundation of trust and success for our students.

WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT BOERNE?

Moving to Boerne from Houston has been such a refreshing experience. Boerne reminds me so much of the small town in Iowa where I grew up. The Boerne community has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, and my family felt an immediate sense of warmth and connection when moving here. Our early experiences reaffirmed that calling Boerne home was the right decision.

WHAT’S

ONE THING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE THE COMMUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

Despite an unpredictable and demanding schedule, I am committed to working out in the morning. I have tried CrossFit, cycling and Pilates classes around Boerne. Currently, my husband and I are part of a 5:15am gym workout class. My motto is: Win the morning, win the day!

CORDILLERA RANCH COMES TO LUXURY TREND THE QUIET

Quiet luxury is all about quality over quantity. The look is characterized by understated color palettes, natural materials and tried-and-true design applications with a modern edge. The latest Garner Homes model home perfectly embodies this cozy yet modern style.

Ahead of the trend, Trey Garner, owner of Garner Homes, has always valued a quality build. His team has been designing and building homes in premier neighborhoods surrounding the Texas Hill Country since 1998. Since 2005, Garner Homes has completed over 90 projects for satisfied homeowners in Cordillera Ranch. In the process, the Garner team has earned dozens of accolades from their peers on the local, state and national levels. Now, they are unveiling their latest model home.

“We had been in our previous model home for almost seven years,” explained Garner. “So, the team and I are so excited to showcase our latest design that reflects the newest design trends and building innovations.”

The 4,264-square-foot house features four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, a dual-purpose game & media room and a 50-foot covered patio that essentially doubles the living area of the home.

Great Room

The expansive great room houses the living, dining, kitchen and butler’s pantry areas under a high vaulted ceiling. The ceiling treatment features Western Hemlock plank paneling accented by contrasting white beams and highlighted by recessed LED lights. White oak 9.5-inch plank flooring runs throughout the space for a warm, connected look. The 6-foot-tall, 3.5-inchthick pivot door in warm white oak makes a stately entrance.

" We finished the home in warmer whites and natural wood tones. We’ve seen a move away from stark whites and grays and an embrace for this warm, modern design associated with the quiet luxury trend.”

- Trey Garner

Living Area

On the opposite side of the great room, the living area is anchored by a unique cantilevered fireplace design, open on all three sides. The fireplace panel wall is finished in limestone plaster, and the floating hearth is made of contrasting black stone. The living area features a span of sliding glass doors that open onto the 50-foot patio, doubling the home's entertaining space.

Kitchen

The kitchen features an oversized island with seating for four, outfitted with gray quartz counters and a waterfall edge. Opposite walls feature a bank of built-in custom white oak cabinetry and a picture window over the sink with views into the backyard. The focal point of the kitchen is the range, placed in the center of the space, allowing for easy flow into the open-concept butler’s pantry behind. The range hood is crafted with honed Lueders limestone and a reeded wood header. The butler’s pantry features blue slate cabinetry with glass door fronts, as well as space for a wine/beverage cooler, built-in coffee maker and other small appliances. The chef-grade kitchen is outfitted with all SubZero® and Wolf® appliances.

Media & Game Room

The dual-purpose media and game room can be accessed from the patio area as well. This flexible space features an LED-lit coffered ceiling, scenic wallpaper accent wall, herringbone wood floors and a wet bar with a wine fridge and ice maker. However, the star of the show is the drop-down projector and 160-inch screen, along with automated black-out shades that turn this space into a theater in just minutes.

Home Office

While this home offers plenty of play, the home office provides a designated and refined spot to complete a hard day’s work. The design features a formal monochrome look, complete with LED-lit built-in bookcases and an enameled ceiling with an Art Deco-inspired chandelier.

Primary Suite

The primary suite is conveniently located off its own wing of the home, adjacent to the garage and laundry room for everyday practicality. The relaxing retreat features another cantilevered fireplace finished with hand-applied concrete plaster in a fluted design. The headboard wall is finished in a warm gray grasscloth wallpaper, and dimension is added with more LED backlighting. The bathroom features an expansive wet room clad in a pebble accent tile and sleek large-format polished limestone. The neutrals of the space are contrasted with a black Kohler® plumbing package and dramatic LED lighting in the oversized shower niche.

Home Exterior

On the approach, visitors to the home are welcomed by a ranch-inspired, sawn-cut Lueders limestone exterior. The white Texas limestone is contrasted by a matte black roof and matching window package.

Backyard

The backyard features resort-level amenities. The massive covered patio includes an outdoor kitchen, dining and living areas that mirror those inside. Two mounted televisions are anchored on opposite walls, allowing everyone to have a view of the game, whether dining or lounging. The patio opens onto a stunning pool, complete with a sun ledge and hot tub with overflow edges on all four sides. Past the pool, you can perfect your golf game on a three-hole putting range.

JEFF MUENCHOW

The first time I met Jeff, I distinctly remember him smiling. The smile was that of genuine happiness — no particular reason, just happiness. Over the last four-and-a-half years, Jeff continues to have an infectious happiness that has helped shape the culture of the Maintenance Team.

When I started here, Jeff was responsible for irrigation throughout the Ranch. As we began restructuring the Maintenance Team, I asked Lenny Tomasini who he wanted as his Assistant Superintendent and, without hesitation, he said Jeff. In Lenny’s mind, there was no question and no doubt that Jeff had what it took to step up and thrive in the new role. Jeff is and has continued to become a more and more indispensable part of the Maintenance Team and the POA staff overall.

Jeff is a traveler; in his own words he grew up poor and relocated often while growing up due to his stepfather’s career. Jeff said his favorite place he has ever visited is Niagara Falls. Moving every six to eight months was challenging and Jeff said it added to his lack of patience. When Jeff starts a project, he wants to complete it and move on to the next as fast as he can. Jeff attended Blanco High School and not being able to afford college, went to work — his first job was at Charlie’s BBQ on FM306. Jeff eventually began working at River Crossing golf course where he met Lenny Tomasini. Lenny took Jeff under his wing and began to impart knowledge and wisdom, leaving Jeff viewing Lenny as more of a father figure than a boss. This sentiment still holds true today. When Lenny left River Crossing to come to Cordillera Ranch, it took less than a month for Jeff to ask to come along.

Jeff has been with Cordillera Ranch for just over 21 years. In 2023, Jeff won the Cordillera Ranch Employee of the Year award, which was no surprise as he excelled when promoted to the role of Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance. I asked Jeff how he has seen Cordillera Ranch grow and he laughed. He told me that on his first day at Cordillera, before the golf course existed, he had to clean a load of pipes out of an old goat barn that sat where the number 12 tee box is now. He still thinks of his first day whenever he passes the 12 tee.

When asking Jeff what motivates him to come in to work every day with the positive attitude, he answered very quickly, “My wife.” Jeff is a dedicated family man who loves coaching sports, including softball, baseball, football and basketball. His daughter is currently pursuing degrees in criminal justice and wildlife management with

the goal of becoming a game warden. Jeff’s son is in elementary school and is an active athlete. Jeff said he loves coaching and the joy it brings him seeing kids grow while competing.

Jeff leads with the adage of measure twice and cut once, which he learned from his grandfather. When working with the Team Leads, he ensures all parties understand the goal and what the expectations are to accomplish that goal. Jeff is a gifted instructor, and he possesses the ability to train employees quickly and effectively. Jeff has and continues to help lead the Maintenance Team to higher standards. He focuses on maintaining quality as the Ranch continues to grow and expand.

Jeff, Cordillera Ranch is fortunate to have such a dedicated, joyful leader on the Maintenance Team. I think I can safely speak for Lenny and the rest of the Maintenance Team when I say we all appreciate everything that you do and we are lucky to have a leader of your caliber working alongside us.

Thank you, Jeff.

HOME TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

6 MONTEREY TRAIL

Garner Custom Homes new model and winner of Best Home during the 2024 Fall Preferred Builders Home Tour

We hosted yet another wonderful Preferred Builders Home Tour in late October, closing out our 2024 biannual event held every spring and fall. With more than 350 total attendees, this was one of, if not, our most well-attended tours ever.

At this past fall tour, our guests were treated to eight homes from our six Preferred Builders, stretching from The Springs to Clubs Village. Showcasing why they are the best-of-the-best, our Preferred Builders gave folks a look at the latest in architecture, design and construction trends and techniques being used today.

Of course, all eight homes received rave reviews from visitors in attendance, but one stood-out above the rest — Garner Custom Homes’ new model in The Springs of Cordillera Ranch. The Garner team’s latest showpiece at 6 Monterey Trail took home the awards for Best Home and Best Kitchen during the event and was certainly the talk of the tour this time around. We also would like to recognize the team at Paul Allen Custom Homes, who’s stunning model at 234 Cordillera Ridge was the top vote-getter for Best Outdoor Space, a popular category here in Cordillera Ranch given our spectacular weather and views that stretch for miles across the Texas Hill Country.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank our guests that came out for a spectacular day, along with ALL our Preferred Builders and staff from each of their organizations. Their hard work and dedication to make this a great event that so many people look forward to attending each year doesn’t go unnoticed, and we are grateful for their support.

We’ll see you for an even better tour this spring!
