O

ne of the best things about this magazine is highlighting the many unique families that call Cordillera Ranch home. We are often asked, “What kind of people call Cordillera Ranch home?” and my answer is wide-ranging. You have your retired couples looking to get away from the fast pace of the city to enjoy the peace and beauty of the Hill Country. You also have plenty of near-retirement families looking for a great quality of life with a uniquely broad array of amenities all inside a gated community. What sometimes surprises people is how many young families there are at Cordillera Ranch. Then you realize that Boerne features one of the best school districts anywhere in the state and you can match that with enough family and outdoor recreation activities that would make most week-long summer camp retreats envious, it starts to make sense why there has been such a youth movement in our fabulous community. This leads us to our feature story, the Rice family, who epitomizes all of those descriptions. After building several successful businesses, Rodney spends much of his time keeping up with his three kids’ busy lives (which is pretty much a fulltime gig for both Rodney and Ann). The story highlights the successful business endeavors, the Rice’s busy family life and their passion for sports and outdoors. However, spend any time around their three children and you’ll quickly witness how much commitment the Rice’s have for raising well-rounded, respectful and polite kids. They are like so many of the kids and families that reside here, which makes it a refreshing place to call home. Lastly, if you enjoy having a 10-year old demoralize you on a double-diamond ski run or on a shuffleboard table, you’re really in for a treat with the Rice kids.

Enjoy the read,

Golf GOLF

Not only is March at Cordillera Ranch an amazing time to come out and play with friends or clients when the golf course is in fantastic shape, but we also have a number of events that highlight the tournament calendar. The 6th Annual Cordillera Cup will take place Saturday and Sunday March 24th-25th. This Ryder Cup style team competition is a popular tournament amongst our members and thus continues to grow every year. The Northington team captured the first four wins, but last year the Hill team closed strong to forge a tie for the first time. The format is always fun, and being part of a team is what makes this event so special. The Cordillera Ranch Golf Professional staff will once again be hosting an Adult Short Game Clinic Tuesday-Thursday March 27th-29th from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Practice Park. This well attended event is popular among members and space is limited to the first 24 participants. Focus will once again be on chipping and pitching, bunker play and putting. The Blockbuster Demo Day is set for Saturday April 7th from 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. We have a fantastic group of manufacturers lined up to showcase the latest technology in the golf industry. We will feature special discounts on products purchased or ordered that day only, so advantage of this unique opportunity! We will have complimentary sodas and hot dogs available; come out and enjoy the day with us. We are trying something different with our Member-Member tournament that will take place Saturday and Sunday April 28th and 29th. We are working on a “Fiesta” theme and need your help. We have implemented a contest titled “You Call It” and are accepting nominations through April 1st for what will become the new permanent name of the Member-Member tournament. The format will be the same as we play a Two-Man Quota and Net BB Quota and we will continue the popular Saturday Casino night that has become a big part of the event. We are looking for a name that conveys FUN and FIESTA so give us your suggestions and may the best name win. We will announce the winning name in the first week of April! Finally, April means the return of the Valero Texas Open here in San Antonio. Golf San Antonio has done a terrific job with this event in their efforts to make this one of the best events on the PGA Tour. Valero continues to sponsor the event and help make it the leading tournament on the PGA Tour with over $9 million going to charity last year. I hope you will consider supporting this event in some way and head out to the TPC San Antonio course and enjoy some great golf in this the 90th anniversary of the Texas Open April 16th-22nd. If you have an opening in your group, please let me know if you need a 4th as I would love to join you and your group for a great day of golf. Spring is here, The Master’s begins in early April and there is no better time to enjoy the game. See you on the course,

TIPSANDTRICKS How to Play Uphill Lies By Marc DeWall, Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course here at Cordillera Ranch offers a number of different challenges for golfers of all skill levels. One of the things that makes the golf course so spectacular are the views of the Texas Hill Country. With the views come rolling terrain and thus shots that must be played from both downhill and uphill lies. This month we are going to give you a few tips on how to play uphill lies and in the next edition of Cordillera Ranch Living magazine we will address downhill lies. The most common tendency when hitting from an uphill lie are pulls, chunks and under clubbing. These are due primarily to the force of gravity attracting the player toward the player’s right side if you are right handed. Transferring the weight to the front foot is the biggest challenge but is so important. The fundamentals to play an uphill lie are as follows: • Set-up basically perpendicular to the slope but with more focus of weight to the left. Resist gravity’s pull by seeing the weight transfer up the slope with the swing. • Position the ball towards the front to middle part of the stance. • Take an extra club due to the slope. • Choke down on the club for better control. • Aim to the right an amount sufficient to compensate for the slope. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone of our golf professional staff at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch for help with your game.

State-Of-The-Clubs Message Now that we have celebrated the anniversary of our second full year in operation, I am happy to report that our growth trends continue to move in the right direction and the future looks very bright. Membership enrollment and attrition are two of the most important factors of our success. As you know, Debbie Pepper joined our team as our Membership Director in April of last year and she has proven to be an excellent addition. We enrolled 54 new Members in 2011 compared to 42 the previous year and had net Membership growth for the seventh consecutive year. Unlike many other clubs who have struggled to maintain growth in their Membership roster, we have already added 5 new Members in 2012. I’m also happy to report that our attrition of around 5% for the last couple of years remains very low compared to industry standards. I believe that is a tribute to the value and quality of the Club and our Members. Tristyn Taylor also joined our team last year and has assumed the role of Member Relations Director. She has been working diligently to improve our Member Communications along with increasing Member participation. Tristyn is a very valuable and popular addition to our team. In general, our revenues have increased by 11% compared to prior year and we experienced revenue growth in almost every area of the Club. Obviously the drought took its toll on our River Club activity, but the weather trends seem to have taken a turn for the better and we are optimistic that activity will increase again when the river flow improves. Our friendly Membership and community spirit, in combination with the quality of our facilities, the natural beauty of the Hill Country, and being located within minutes of one of the largest cities in the United States, is the recipe for a world-class lifestyle. The 7 Clubs are all designed to improve your lifestyle, therefore our Club management team is focused on seeking ideas and programs that will keep you active, entertained, and ultimately enhance your life here at the Ranch. Despite the weather challenges, Shane Reynolds and his group of outfitters creatively overcame this challenge by focusing on several of our other amenities and activities including signature vacations to both Kauai and Pinehurst. They have also increased the number of concealed handgun courses being taught at the Gun Club, so that more and more people have the ability to protect themselves in a safe and legal manner. Our food and beverage operation also realized a growth in revenue and we continue to get positive feedback from our Members regarding our menus and events. Last year we introduced the Cordillera Ranch Cellar Club and already have over 70 Members enrolled who are taking advantage of the many benefits associated with this offering. Included benefits are reduced pricing on wines ordered via the wine pre-sale shop, reduced pricing on wines purchased by the bottle while dining, and preferred pricing for those attending our Wine Dinners. Chef Dwight Webb joined our team last year along with Zach Garza, our Sous Chef. The two of them have a great deal of passion for meeting and exceeding our Members expectations and have also been great additions to our team. Manny, Jeff, Dwight, and Zach are all committed to providing a food and beverage experience that encourages your participation. I believe this is critical because many clubs have struggled in this area, and as a result have implemented food & beverage minimums in order to enforce Member support of their operations. In contrast, we want to earn your business and support. In January Lindsey Minarcik, our Fitness Director rolled out a new Spa & Athletic Club menu designed to better accommodate our members’ needs. Along with the new menu, we have added a private Pilates studio and exciting new exercise classes and instructors, which broadens our offerings and wellness choices.

My mouth is watering already! Kassandra Leachman, our Equestrian Manager, added Ashleigh Turgon to her team along with a new gelding named Mikey. Both Ashleigh and Mikey have a great deal of passion for English style riding, which is a popular riding lesson choice with our young ranchers. The Equestrian Club not only offers Western and English riding lessons, but also holds fun-filled camps during school breaks and the summer. As you know the drought was also a challenge for the Golf department, but I hope you’ll all agree that Mark Semm and his team in Golf Course Maintenance did a phenomenal job maintaining the golf course during the worst draught on record. Your support and overwhelming positive comments fueled Mark and his team to deliver a product that achieved rave reviews. Marc DeWall and the golf operations staff worked diligently to keep our Members active on the golf course during this difficult time as well. Even with the extreme drought, the revenues in this department were up significantly compared to prior year. The Men’s Member-Guest golf tournament in October was one of the best tournaments I’ve had the pleasure to be a part of. Be ready to register because when Marc announces the dates for this year’s event, it is sure to be a sellout. We are also preparing to begin construction on our “Champions Gallery”; this is sure to be a source of pride for our Members and will provide recognition to those teams and individuals who have won golf tournaments in the past and in the future. In January, we hosted a fun-filled employee appreciation event with more than 80 employees and guests. We took the opportunity to review the “C a Star in Action” nominations that were graciously submitted by our Members during 2011. Our success as a Club would not be possible without the more than 100 employee-partners who make it a priority to take care of you. I would like to personally thank them for their efforts and encourage all of our Members to complete a “C a Star in Action” nomination form either online or at the Club when someone goes out of their way to make your day. I try to stay active around the Clubs, but I am not always aware of an employee’s efforts, so if you can help me recognize them I would appreciate it. I promise to recognize and share your comments with these star performers. Our competitive research continues to reflect us in a positive light both in regards to the value and quality of facilities we provide in comparison to our dues and fees. Most of our competitors have not only struggled financially, but have also allowed their dues to escalate to $900 - $1,000 per month. As we look to the future we will continue to create programming and activities designed to keep you engaged in the Club and the Community in general while ensuring that we provide you and your families with an unparalleled value. March represents my two-year anniversary as the General Manager, and I cannot thank you enough for your support and encouragement. See you at the Club! Monty

BUMDOODLER’S SANDWICH SHOP An absolute staple in Boerne, Bumdoodlers has been whipping out made to order sandwiches for over 25 years. You might not think of a sandwich shop for a great dining location, but that just means you haven’t tried them yet. Bring your appetite, as the portions are intense. And arrive early, as the lunch rush typically pushes the line out the door. That should tell you something about the quality. 929 N Main Street • Boerne, TX • (830) 249-8826

COVER FEATURE

RODNEY RICE AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT TAKES THE WORLD WIDE WEB BY STORM by Bethany Heinesh :: photography by West Vita

Rodney Rice knows business. He’s what you might call a mogul, a revolutionary, a self-made man. He’s a dreamer, a guy who has that “special something” most people spend their lives pursuing, but never achieve. Everything Rodney sets out to accomplish is ignited by a spark of creativity and followed by good old fashioned hard work and determination. While Rodney’s dynamic personality and sharp intellect have proven to benefit him in all matters relating to business, it is perhaps his down-to-earth attitude, sincere expression of humility and willingness to serve others that set him a cut above the rest. When Rodney goes after something, he pursues it with a vengeance and gives it everything he’s got. A University of Texas grad, (hook ‘em horns!) Rodney double majored in finance and international business, an education he says has served him well. A founding member of Einstein Bros. Bagels, a much-loved, na-

tionally franchised bagel company, Rodney is also the co-founder of ServiceMagic.com. In the midst of the first dot com bubble bursting, in 1999, ServiceMagic introduced a completely new approach to marketing by connecting consumers with qualified, reputable contractors who ServiceMagic screens across ten criteria, including verification of licenses and insurance coverage, and their customers’ reviews. All of this with just a few clicks of a mouse. Essentially, the ServiceMagic web site acts as a marketplace connecting the right service provider with the right homeowner. It was a ground-breaking approach to buying local services. Before the Internet, Yellow Pages was one of the most popular

way people sought plumbers, roofers and commercial painters. This meant businesses would advertise, then sit and wait for potential customers to call. Rodney and his partner, Michael Beaudoin, came up with a way to generate and send sales leads to registered contractors, who could then call the client directly. The contractor would then be charged a “lead fee” by ServiceMagic. “Admittedly, contractors were skeptical early on as the Yellow Pages and door hangers were all they knew. However, homeowners quickly became big fans of the site even though we freaked a few out early on,” Rodney joked. “People would go online and look for roofers, we would match them immediately and then a roofer would often call them before they had left our site. It was unlike anything homeowners had ever experienced. But truly, we changed a communication paradigm, and that really became the magic of ServiceMagic.” It didn’t take long, however, for the idea to take off and quickly gain momentum. For 12 years, Rodney and Mike built the company into an incredible success. They sold it to InterActive Corp, a large public Internet conglomerate, in 2004 but have stayed on and continued to build the business. Today, ServiceMagic has 85,000 businesses listed with more than one million customer ratings. Rodney served as Co-CEO through 2008 and as Co-Chairman since. In recent years, he has started to pursue other passions –including helping young entrepreneurs get their start and raising a family with wife, Ann. The Rice’s three kids, 13-year-old Ryan, 11-year-old Alexa and Georgia, 10, are all enrolled in Boerne schools and are very active in their respective grades. “One of the main reasons we moved here from Colorado when I decided to sell ServiceMagic was because we wanted to be close to family and we wanted our kids to go to good public schools,” Rodney said. He and Ann, both native Texans, always knew they wanted to get back to the Hill Country one day. “I am a big proponent of the public school system. I believe you learn a lot of valuable life lessons and develop useful skills outside the text books in public school. I have great admiration for those

WE CHANGED A COMMUNICATION PARADIGM AND THAT BECAME THE MAGIC OF SERVICEMAGIC.

who teach. I’ve often dreamt of teaching one day.” Rodney explains that he and Ann, married 14 years, first looked at relocating to Austin, but soon realized they wanted to live somewhere that moved at a slower pace. “We didn’t want to raise our kids in a rat-race type of atmosphere. We wanted them to experience a small town environment and have close, lasting relationships.” The Rice’s moved from Denver to Coridillera Ranch six years ago and have loved every minute of their time here. “Although my dad is passed on now, he used to live two-and-a-half hours away and we would visit him often. We got to spend some amazing time with him. I wanted my kids growing up knowing him and hunting and fishing with him like we did when I was a kid. If we wouldn’t have moved from Colorado, we never would have had that opportunity.” Rodney’s father, Dr. Jack S. Rice, was a celebrated medical doctor who worked in the field of urology and, according to Rodney, was a great dad to him and his two older brothers. Rodney credits his dad for teaching him to be both a go-getter, and a good person. He also says he believes his dad had the right idea about life. “To him, a full day was golfing, fishing and hunting –all in the same day. He never let the grass grow under his feet and he taught me to be the same way. I don’t like to sit still for long and I love being outside.” Rodney, Ann and the kids, are what you would consider an outdoorsy family. Fly-fishing, tennis, golfing, quail hunting, sporting clays, snow skiing and wake boarding are just a few of the activities that the Rice’s enjoy. “The concept of Cordillera Ranch as a lifestyle is very fitting. All the great trails and sporting activities just make life so much fun here .We feel truly blessed to be able to live where we do and we have no intention of leaving anytime soon.” Rodney, a world traveler, says he has been to some beautiful places in the world, but few compare to the Lone Star State. “There’s just something special about the Texas Hill Country.” While Rodney is to be applauded for his many impressive professional accomplishments, his dedication to making sure others get their slice of the American pie is also inspiring, to say the least. As an angel investor, Rodney finances small businesses and increases the chances of success for young entrepreneurs fighting their way to the top like he once did. He also volunteers to mentor small, start- up companies, providing them with free business advice and invaluable guidance.

I feel really fortunate and as I look to the second half of my life, I plan to spend most of it giving back.

“America is unique in that it thrives because anyone with talent and ambition can get access to capital,” Rodney says. “This ensures the best and brightest are starting and building our future businesses, not just those from the right family or lineage as is the case in most of the world. As someone who knows what it’s like to start a business, I understand how challenging it can be. There was so much involved to just to get our feet off the ground. Honestly, I think if most entrepreneurs could see a year into the future, most would turn around and run. If I can make it easier for someone else by sharing what I already know, I am happy to do it.” When asked why he feels that the small business owner is such an integral part of the American story, Rodney answered, “Given the current job environment, if we are going to stand a chance in years to come, we have to invest in our small businesses. They are job creators and they drive the economy. My friend Mike and I started our business in the proverbial garage. We were two guys who got together, brainstormed, came up with an idea and went about making it a reality. Today, the company employs over 1,100 people and generates more than $200 million a year in revenue. I believe anybody with the right idea can do what we did if given the opportunity and a little bit of support.” As he looks to the future, at the young age of 42, Rodney sees great things ahead. A supporter of many local and national charities, including Wounded Warriors and Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries, Rodney has dreams of one day starting his own charity. “I want to do something that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of our children. I have a passion for sharing the outdoors with our own kids and I want to bring that opportunity to less fortunate kids. I feel really fortunate and as I look to the second half of my life, I plan to spend most of it giving back.” Keep an eye out for Rodney Rice. Whatever he decides to do next, it’s going to be worth waiting for and it’s going to be big. After all, he’s in the business of making magic.

FAMILY Mom: Donna, Dad: Rob, Brothers: Austin and Garrett

EDUCATION Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management from Texas Tech University

HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR FIELD? My mom and I were looking through a book of majors and we came across the description of a Hospitality Degree, after reading it I said, “Mom, that’s so me!!”

HOW DID YOU END UP AT CORDILLERA RANCH? Monty Becton, our GM, graduated from Texas Tech as well, with the same degree, so he knows how much the program emphasizes job placement. He and Manny Ortiz, our Director of Food and Beverage, came to recruit, I interviewed and the rest is history.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CORDILLERA RANCH? Since June 1, 2011

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING IN THE HILL COUNTRY? It’s so beautiful here! And I love the hills, after living in Lubbock for 4 years you learn to appreciate any degree of elevation in the land around you.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/ INTERESTS? Photography, family and getting out to meet new people. I love making new friends! I’ve been very blessed being able to make the ones I’ve made here so far.

44 | MARCH/APRIL 2012

FAVORITE MOVIE AND WHY? This is such an unfair question, I love movies, and there are so many different genres…but let’s go with Dirty Dancing, it’s such a classic, and it never gets old to me.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE IN YOUR BUSINESS? The positive responses from members, customers or guests reassuring you that all the hard work by you and your team was worth it!

FAVORITE ASPECT OR FEATURE AT CORDILLERA RANCH? The views, but ultimately the members, everyone is so wonderful. It feels like one big family here, and living away from all of mine, its helps that I’m able to be a part of this one.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EVENT AT THE CLUBS? The C-Star Member-Guest, I’ve never been able to work an event quite as

unique and detailed as that one. I feel like everyone had such a good time, members; guests and the staff!

IF YOU COULD MOVE TO ANY COUNTRY, WHICH WOULD IT BE? Greece or Australia!

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY? No day is ever the same. You never see the same people. You never get the same calls. I could not deal with the drudgery of doing the same exact thing every day.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU? Wake up, go to work, I always try and call my family on my way to or from work, then depending on the time I’ll either go for a run or do Bikram Yoga. After that, I try and catch up on some “How I Met Your Mother” or read a book.

The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch recently began a new benefit for our Members designed specifically to enhance access to world-class events around the world. As we know, life at Cordillera Ranch can’t be beat, but from time to time it’s nice to get away and spend time with friends and family. The Club has formed a relationship with a firm in Austin that secures tickets to some of the most sought after events around the world, the “Cordillera Ranch Ticket Line.” Debbie Pepper, Director of Membership with The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, introduced us to Brian and his team based on her work with them over the last 10 years. My wife and I have also had personal experience with Brian and his team, as he arranged for us to attend the Prime Time Emmy Awards in Los Angeles several years ago. The ticket line will have access to events around the world including the 2012 Olympics in London this summer, Broadway shows and musicals, as well as professional and college sporting events. One of the many benefits of partnering with Brian and his team is that they not only secure tickets for events, but in many cases actually host and secure VIP venues at a large number of these events. A few examples of this would be the Kentucky Derby and the Master’s and Ryder Cup Golf tournaments. In addition to obtaining tickets, they can also coordinate transportation and lodging for club members and their guests. There are two convenient ways that Members can start planning your next adventure. Access the Cordillera Ranch Ticket Line link on our web site or you can call the ticket line directly at 830.423.0313. All you need to do is decide what’s next on your bucket list, then call the Cordillera Ranch Ticket Line and let them make your dreams come true, it’s that easy.

FITNESS

EVERYDAY PILATES FOR EVERYBODY

by Martha Miehe-Renard The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Pilates Instructor

Pilates has been used for centuries as an exercise that can tone and strengthen your body, but can also help with posture, breathing, and overall body awareness. Many people avoid some of the more high-intensity programs for fitness, and Pilates has proved to be a tremendous opportunity to increase their fitness with minimal risk of injury. Cordillera Ranch Club trainer, Martha Miehe-Renard shows us a few of the key movements of Pilates for you to begin your workout at home. As always, be sure to check with your doctor before starting any workout program.

EXERCISE 1 “Rib Breathing” This exercise will wake up your oblique abdominal muscles and give you trunk stability. Position: Face up on the mat with your legs extended and your hands on the bottom of your ribcage and fingertips approximately 2-3 inches apart. 8-10 Reps. Feel how the front of the ribcage is naturally reaching for the ceiling and how the mid and low back arches away from the floor. Inhale and feel the fingers pull apart, exhale and feel your ribs draw nearer and the fingertips touch. Notice how the contraction of your oblique flattens the arch in the back and pulls your abdomen down toward the spine. Watch for shortening of the trunk. Avoid tilting your pelvis back and draw your shoulders away from your ears. Imagine your trunk as a straight tube.

EXERCISE 2 “Bridge” This exercise strengthens the gluteus muscles and hamstrings and creates flexibility and mobility in the spine. Position: Face up on the mat with your knees bent, arms by your side. 8-10 Reps. Relax the neck, throat and shoulders. Inhale, for nothing and on the exhale and draw abdomen to spine and curl your tailbone under, reaching the pubic bone toward the ceiling. Take another full breath and slowly peel one vertebra off the floor one at a time until you can draw an imaginary line straight through your shoulders, hips and knees. Take 2 breaths to roll back down, one vertebra at a time. Watch for tension or pressure on your neck. Keep most of the weight on your feet and shoulders. Imagine your spine moving fluidly like a string of pearls.

EXERCISE 3 ”Abdominal Roll” This exercise will teach you correct form when executing an abdominal crunch and will wake up the deep abdominal muscles and neck flexors. Position: Face up on the mat or on a towel, with your knees bent. 8-10 Reps. Grab a hold of the corners of the mat or towel and lift your elbows to the ceiling to the point that you feel your head cradled and the strain taken off your neck. Your lower back is imprinted into the mat. Inhale, exhale half the air out, then bring the chin all the way to the chest and use your arms to lift your neck/head and shoulders off the mat until you feel just the tips of your shoulder blades on the mat. Notice your abdomen is pulled toward your spine. Inhale, exhale and roll back down keeping the chin on the chest all the way down. Watch for an excessively tilted pelvis. The Pelvis should be flat and the low back softly imprinted into the mat. Imagine you are pulling a T-shirt over your head when rolling back down.

50 | MARCH/APRIL 2012

E TH BS U CL

EXERCISE 4 “Modified Swan” The Swan is an extension (back bending) exercise. This one is good for the person with a stooped posture or for a person with excessive lumbar (low back) curve. The goal is to develop the upper back muscles and create better posture. Position: Face down on the mat, tops of feet flat on the floor, palms by your chest close to your sides and forehead on the mat. 8-10 Reps. Inhale, then exhale as you draw your shoulder blades down your back. Inhale again and exhale as you draw your abdomen to the spine and lift your nose and chest off the floor, leaving the bottom of your ribs touching the floor. No weight should be on your hands; very little tension should be in your low back and none in the tops of your shoulders and neck. Watch for overarching of the low back and over extension of your neck. Always engage the abdominals and slightly engage your buttocks. The back of your neck should stay long or slightly curved upward. Imagine someone is pushing down on your elbows as you lift your head and chest.

EXERCISE 5

“Balancing Plank with Tapping” This is a great exercise for balance, coordination and core strength. Position: On your hands and knees. Put an extra pad under your knees if the surface is too hard. Inhale and draw your abdomen toward your spine without arching. Inhale and exhale again as you reach your right leg straight out from your hip in a horizontal line. Take another breath and reach your left hand in front. Breathe and reach the hand and feet in opposite directions. Slowly move your right leg to the right and tap the floor, lift up and slowly move it to the left and tap the floor. Tap 6-8 times and switch. A modification is to omit the tapping and hold the plank for 10 seconds. Watch: Keep the abs and the buttocks muscles engaged the whole time. If you feel strain in your low back, lower your leg or engage abs and buttocks more. Imagine yourself as a flat table you could place bowls of water on, without spilling.

EXERCISE 6 “Spine Twist” This works on rotating the trunk and spine and coordinating your breath. Position: Sit on the mat, legs extended long and feet flexed, arms like a T. Sit on a pillow or a folded up mat if your hamstrings are too tight. Your low back should be flat, not rounded. 6-8 reps. Inhale and lift up and out of your hips, exhale and rotate to the right 3 times. Each exhale should bring your trunk and arms further to the right. Inhale to return to center, and repeat the exhales on the left and return to center on inhale. Watch for involuntary lift of the shoulders. Try to engage your hip flexors and abdominal muscles to help you sit tall. Imagine the tips of your ears reaching for the ceiling.

EXERCISE 7 “Mermaid” This exercise is a great stretch of the obliques and other muscles of your front side and back. It’s also a great tension reliever and rib breathing exercise. Position: Sit on the mat in a Z-sit position with the right foot in front of the body, the left to the side. Sit on a pillow or folded up mat if your hips are too tight. Both sits bones should be evenly planted on the mat. Place a hand on the floor on both sides of the body. 6-8 Reps. Inhale and reach the right hand up over your head and stretch as you exhale. Take another full breath and return the hand. Repeat 6-8 times and switch your legs to the other side and lift your left arm. Watch for a shortening or collapse in the waist. Imagine you are toast inside of a toaster, bending straight to the side without getting burned on the nose or back of the head.

A BENEFIT FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY By Bethany Heinesh

January has come and gone and because of the tireless efforts of the many Boerne ISD educators who worked overtime to promote National Mentoring Month (NMM), several at-risk students will likely enjoy the benefits of mentorship for many months to come. “Mentorship is one of the most important events our nation and the community of Boerne honors each January during NMM,” said Elizabeth Nolen, Parent & Community Involvement Coordinator for BISD. “This event highlights the need for Americans to volunteer. This year, our theme was Invest in the Future: Mentor a Child, which communicated the longterm benefits of quality mentorship and the needs of young people, mentors and their communities.” In 2006, the Boerne ISD (BISD) identified more than 600 youth as being “at-risk” of falling victim to poor attendance and performance, or dropping out of school before graduation. The following year, the BISD implemented a research-based prevention and early intervention strategy: mentorship. Since its inception, the program has helped several hundred students. According to Nolen, the investment of time, money and resources dedicated to helping at-risk students is well worth

52 | MARCH/APRIL 2012

the effort. The Boerne ISD Mentor Program has been very successful because of the many contributions made by volunteers in and around Boerne who are able and willing to make a difference. Four-year Cordillera Ranch resident Tom Spitsnaugle is such a volunteer. “These kids need help. You can make a difference,” says Spitsnaugle. “They need role models, and they do not have them at home. I believe it helps the student, therefore, why would I not do it!?” The mission of the mentorship program is to build character in youth by facilitating an ongoing relationship with a caring adult who provides support, guidance and assistance on a one-toone basis. A mentor is a friend, a role model, and an advocate. The mentorship program has been truly successful; it continues to thrive and has served a few hundred at-risk students who would otherwise fall victim to poor attendance and performance, dropping out of school before graduation, never pursuing the possibility of a college education and other less than favorable outcomes. National statistics show that 85 percent of the youth in prison and 63 percent of youth suicides come from fatherless homes. Additionally, children from single parent households are five

times more likely to be adults living in poverty. In support of the BISD mentorship program and the growing need for volunteers, Boerne Mayor Mike Schultz not only calls adults to mentor, but also for more men and local businesses to become involved in this type of relationship. “The number of male students added to the program increases each school year,” Nolen said. “To date, 29 male students are on the waiting list. Men are encouraged to walk alongside a young man, a boy who wants to be a hero and has big dreams. Mayor Schultz has recognized the value of mentorship and I hope the rest of the community will also.” Richard Drum, program volunteer, says, “You can influence young man at a crucial time in his life. You are needed!” Drum and his wife, Jane, treasure and enjoy time with their students weekly. The mission of the program is to build character in youth by facilitating an ongoing relationship with a caring adult who provides support, guidance, and assistance on a one-to-one basis who is a friend, role model, and advocate. The goal is to build and nurture a relationship that is based upon trust, support, and encouragement. Through mentoring,

students and adults are more connected to each other, school and community; hence, building a stronger and healthier world. Mentors are parents, grandparents, retirees, business leaders, professionals, law enforcement officers, artists, musicians, friends, relatives, and your next door neighbor. While the expectation of the program is not to tutor or teach, past evaluation measures reveal participants showed an increase in core academic subjects as measured by grade point average, and a decrease in number of unexcused school absences. Mentoring works! BISD volunteers pledge to meet with a student weekly for a one hour session during the school day for one school year. Upon application, background check and character reference approval, applicants are invited to a one-hour training session then carefully matched with a student based upon shared interests, locations and schedules. Program staff members provide volunteers with resources, ongoing support, and guidance for a successful experience. OUTDOORS

or The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

By Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Direct

With spring upon us, I am very optimistic that our rain pattern might return to average and bring with it the opportunity to explore and enjoy the upper Guadalupe River between Comfort and Bergheim. There is no better way to explore the Guadalupe River than by kayak. The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch has a fleet of kayaks for our members and their guests to utilize and invite you to come give it a try. As the Outfitter for the Club, we offer complimentary “Learn to Kayak” classes in March and April. We teach kayaking on Swede Creek Lake, a very controlled environment and great place to learn to paddle before heading out onto the waters of the Guadalupe. When I mention kayaking to our members, I often get a shocked look and comment of “I don’t want to be trapped inside a kayak if it

Cordiilera Clubs of t-on-top” si “ Ranch more kayaks are ate min li e d n a stable g g of bein the feelin . d e p p a tr

E TH BS U CL

flips. That comment is simply referring to a whitewater or touring kayak with a cockpit and spray skirt. The club has all sit-on-top and inflatable kayaks, which are the easiest and safest kayaks to paddle. Sit-on-tops have similar hull shapes to their traditional counterparts, but instead of sitting inside the kayak, you sit in a molded-in depression on top. Sit-on-tops share many benefits with traditional sitinsides, but are easier to use. There are siton-tops for fishing, surfing, touring, scuba diving and more. Sit-on-tops have a few advantages over sit-insides, one of which is comfort. Paddlers with large body types, long legs, or limited flexibility feel less confined than paddling a sit-on-top. One of the biggest benefits, though, is the self-rescue. Because sit-on-tops have an open deck rather than an enclosed one, there is no risk of being trapped in the boat if it tips over-no need to practice rolls or wet exits, which really appeals to new paddlers. From its headwaters outside Kerrville, the Guadalupe River flows over a limestone bed lined with beautiful, huge, old Cypress trees accented by Pecans, Sycamores, Elms, Live Oaks, and others that add to the scenic attraction of the river. The river is slightly narrower near the headwaters with shallow banks and gravel bars, with fewer rapids. The gradient increases as it moves towards Cordillera Ranch, where rapids exist just below the ranch at Bergheim as the river makes it way towards Canyon Lake and ultimately towards the Gulf of Mexico. The water quality in the Upper Guadalupe is generally very good. However, it will become muddy after rainfall, and may become cluttered with debris during flood stage conditions. The river slows down during the dog days of summer unless there is adequate rainfall to keep the water flowing. The Upper Guadalupe is a free flowing river at the mercy of rainfall and spring flow. We have three spring fed creeks on Cordillera Ranch that contribute to this beautiful waterway. The first is Spring Creek, which has steady flow as it drops underground in dry times just south of the bridge across Cordillera Trace. The next is Swede Creek, which has a steady constant flow and feeds the lake

at Swede Creek Park. The last is Panther Creek, which is on the undeveloped tract of the KWW Ranch. This beautiful creek is also lined with Cypress trees and has a steady flow down into the Guadalupe River. Early spring to late June is generally best, followed by late September through early November. With proper cold weather gear the Upper Guad can be paddled in the winter when temperatures are permissible and adequate flow is available. Summer paddling is fun and adventurous with adequate rainfall, but can be a bit challenging in the small rapids when flows are below about 100 cubic feet per second

anybody wanting to experience the joys of kayaking. The river club also has tubes and canoes, but those can be challenging when the flow is slow. Headwinds can also be a challenge unless the water is moving, so plan trip distances according to flow rate and wind conditions for the most enjoyable paddle trip. Contact the Club Outfitter, Shane Reynolds sreynolds@ cordilleraranch.com, at 210.616.6051 or the Cordillera Ranch Outfitter Center at 830.336.4823 for detailed float times and current river conditions.

(cfs). Summer temperatures should be considered a hazard if proper precautions are not taken. Always have protective clothing, sunscreen and plenty of nonalcoholic liquids to prevent dehydration. I have paddled every section of the Upper Guadalupe between Comfort and Canyon Lake over the past six years. During that time I have witnessed many changes in the character of this river. The Upper Guad is my favorite river to paddle because it is serenely beautiful, seldom crowded, and offers an enjoyable paddle trip for almost any paddler. There are some good Class II drops, and at high water levels some of them can become Class III ratings. The Upper Guad is a pool-and-drop river typical of most Texas rivers. I have paddled the Upper Guad in the heat of the summer and cold of winter. The giant Cypress trees that line this river make for a beautiful paddling experience in the spring and fall, when the grasses are green and the trees are in full bloom. I highly recommend this river for

“BY THE WORK, ONE KNOWS THE WORKMEN.”

- Jean De La Fontaine

By Ray Stadler You have elected to build a new custom home in the exclusive neighborhood of Cordillera Ranch, and you’ve done so because this neighborhood offers ‘understated elegance’ with the some of the finest resort style living that Texas has to offer. When you decide to begin the construction of your new residence, you want to ensure that the same level of quality, elegance and luxury amenities are present in your new home. How do you achieve timeless elegance and workmanship that will last for years to come, and how do you do it all at the best investment for your dollar, are both very important questions. The answers to those questions can be found by carefully selecting a builder that is focused on high levels of quality and workmanship and has the proper procedures in place to ensure their execution. A custom home is a major financial investment, and when building a new home one of the most important questions can be, “How can I best guarantee that the money I am investing is well spent?” As a preferred custom builder in Cordillera Ranch, I feel that one of the best ways to maximize your investment dollars is by focusing on the quality and workmanship provided by your builder. One of my favorite analogies involves the basic production of a car. If you have decided to invest in a Mercedes, would you hire GMC to build it for you? This is not to imply that GMC is not capable of putting a car together for you, and doing a very decent job, but that is not what GMC is expected to do every day. GMC does not have the same quality expectations as Mercedes for a Mercedes luxury product, and it is not likely that you would get the return on your investment when you tried to sell it. Even if while GMC

60 | MARCH/APRIL 2012

assembles it for you they also include additional Mercedes’ parts, to make it look like a Mercedes, it is still not a genuine Mercedes. The same can be said of building a custom home. Investing in a home which was not built with the highest level of quality and workmanship will also not see a future return on the dollars spent. Quality and fine craftsmanship do not just happen by chance. It takes years of experience and strict attention to detail to ensure that a house is delivered on time and within budget without compromising

or skipping corners throughout the building process. Quality control procedures set up within the builder’s company are a critical part of ensuring those processes are adhered to throughout every phase of construction as true quality must begin with the foundation of the home and continue through the building of the home’s structure. It is the parts, or ‘bones’, of the house that you do not see that should be rigidly inspected during each phase of construction. Once these ‘bones’ are covered up, it is much more difficult to

go back and correct errors that become visible once drywall, paint and tile have been installed. All builders have different processes when it comes to quality assurance, but not all builders are equal in viewing the critical importance of these processes starting with the very forms that will help mold the foundation for your new home. Building in Cordillera Ranch means that you will not have any inspections done by city or county officials so it is extremely important that you discuss with your builder what internal inspection procedures they have in place for each phase of construction, starting with the site prep and foundation and carrying on through to the finish-out. Questions regarding trade partners used in constructing the home should also be asked. For instance, you may inquire as to whether the trade partners also have quality control procedures established within their own company, and if they have discussed them with the builder. Are regular meetings held for training and education of the builder’s staff and trade partners, and do they approach each project together as a team instead of independent entities? Both of these items are crucial elements for executing the best quality custom home possible. The work that each trade contributes to a home overlaps and affects other phases of construction. Working together as a team results in better communication, less errors and generating of a seamless product and building experience. Continued education ensures that a builder is not only exploring new and innovative products that can be used in your home, but that they are also doing

a continual examination of their current building methods. Methods, which if left unexamined, can lead to inefficiencies or damages in your new home. Dead space above windows or in corners from framing and insulating can leak valuable energy dollars, inefficient blocking can lead to future costly drywall repairs, and the builder not properly inspecting the roof for correct waterproofing and flashing can have a devastating result. All of these items take little time and money to address while the house is under construction, but they can all be very costly once the house has been completed. A quality-conscious builder should be willing to look at their own methods of construction and constantly search for areas of improvement. No builder is perfect, but we can strive to come as close to perfection as possible in the construction of your new home. An additional quality assurance option for a customer is the hiring of an independent inspector to periodically audit the construction of your new home. Our particular company philosophy is one that welcomes and encourages clients to hire independent inspectors if they wish to do so. We feel that it is a relatively small cost that can offer piece of mind and alleviate stress during the building process for the client. A quality custom home builder that is confident in their building practices should not have any difficulties in coordinating with the inspector and addressing any of their concerns. An outside inspector affords the builder an extra set of eyes on the home and offers an opportunity to address additional issues that may have been missed during previous quality inspections. When dealing with an inspector it is important to realize that they will find items that need to be addressed by the builder. After all, that is what you are paying them to do, and as I said earlier, builders are not perfect. This should not be a reason for alarm. It is quite possible that the builder had those items on a quality list, and they had not yet been addressed, or that the builder had not yet had a chance to address those items during a specific phase of construction. What is important is how the builder

addresses those issues found, communicates with you about them and interacts with the inspector. Both the builder and the client need to remember that the objective in hiring of an independent inspector is to increase the overall quality of the home and offer additional piece of mind and in doing so, they will reap the highest benefits. So the moral to the story is this, a new custom home can be a major investment, but there are ways that you can lower the risk of that investment and help guarantee that in years to come your new home will always exhibit the timeless elegance that you wished for. High levels of quality and workmanship do not always come with the least expensive price tag, but they often prove to save money, and headaches, in the long run. Hiring a builder that has taken the time to implement quality control procedures in their business practices and also performs critical quality inspections during the construction process will always result in a better product, which should leave you with a home you can enjoy for generations to come. As a Preferred Builder in Cordillera Ranch for the last nine years, I am readily available to answer any questions that you may have about the importance of quality and workmanship, and I can be reached at 210.669.8265 or at RStadler@ satx.rr.com at your convenience. I would also encourage people to visit our website at www.StadlerCustomHomes.com for a list of questions you can ask when interviewing builders about their quality control procedures so that you can make sure to make the most of your investment dollars in your new custom home. Best Wishes, Ray Stadler Owner

Name: Mason Farmer | Age: 22 College: Texas A&M University at Galveston | Major: Marine Engineering Interests/Activities: Hunting, fishing, golfing. What made you choose your major? I chose my major because it sounded like something I would like and would potentially be good at. I did really well in math in highschool and I like to take things apart and see how things work, so engineering seemed like a perfect fit. What do you want to do after you finish college? After college I want to try and use my major and get a job in the engineering field. What do you think is the #1 issue with the Gulf/oceans? I think that one big issue is that offshore drilling has really slow down since the BP accident. Although the government has started allowing offshore drilling again not many permits have been issued to companies since the bp accident. If the permit process could be accelerated I think that it could stimulate more drilling to create more jobs and increase business along the gulf coast. Where do you see yourself professionally in 20 years? In 20 years I hope to be have a steady job in engineering hopefully designing and working on offshore oil rigs, piping systems, or ships. How were you prepared for college coming out of BHS? Coming out of BHS I felt I was pretty well prepared. I even still use many of the things I learned in highschool especially my math and chemistry classes.
