welcome

e have so much exciting news to report this issue it’s hard to know where to start. First, I’m pleased to say that real estate sales have really kicked into gear in the last two months resulting in the best spring selling season we’ve had in three years. We are on pace to surpass 2010 sales by mid-year; it’s finally getting fun again!! Let’s hope it keeps up the pace. We also have several new additions to the sales team at Cordillera Ranch and The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in the last month. Debbie Pepper joined the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch as the Director of Memberships. Debbie is very excited to be back in Texas and brings years of Club experience with her. For the last three years, Debbie served as Director of Membership at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA overseeing Club sales, marketing, events and club-related operations, and prior to that she served 23 years at other clubs in the private club industry. Debbie’s eager approach and extensive experience are going to be valuable assets to help continue the trend of membership growth. Additionally, we have two new real estate sales agents in Charles Mueller and Mike Sheridan (really a Cordillera Ranch veteran). Charles joins us after several years of selling real estate at other area high-end developments as well as spending a good part of his life as an attorney in San Antonio. You’ll find that Charles is not short on energy, enthusiasm and a passion for the real estate business and the relationships that are formed along the way. Mike Sheridan, the veteran, will be wearing multiple hats at Cordillera Ranch. He wouldn’t dare pass up the fun of getting to be the POA sheriff at least some of the time so he’s going to split time between real estate sales, development planning and managing the POA and ARC. It’s been great to see Mike re-energized in the real estate process as he’s gotten back in the rhythm and fun of introducing our little slice of heaven to prospective new residents. Please join me in welcoming all of the new additions to Cordillera Ranch --- with a solid team in place we’re excited about what the future holds. Lastly, we’ve put a lot of focus in recent months on a complete overhaul to our website which we launched in mid-April. You’ll find a lot of new features to the site including upgraded photography, better home listing info, improved home photo slideshows, available lot info, a Google map interactive land plan with detailed property info, blog updates and much more. Soon we’ll add a property owner page to keep your contact info updated and also access important POA documents, CCR’s and other communications. Check out the new site at www.cordilleraranch.com. Enjoy this diverse and enriching edition of the magazine – kudos to the Club staff members that have put together some very intriguing pieces for this issue. Cheers,

Charlie Hill Vice President Cordillera Ranch

RACE-DAY TRAINING The Club’s Fitness Center is a great resource in helping you prepare for a race with treadmills, weights and personal trainers to guide and help you create focus. Below are some tips from club personal trainer Michael Reyes. So find a race that fits your needs and abilities, start training and then go out and give it all you’ve got! Good luck!

MICHAEL’S RACE TRAINING TIPS:

Vary your training intensity. Try three types of training days. Your first type of training day consists of fast intervals, running 400 or 800 meter sprints with short rest breaks in between. Your second type is running longer distances, usually 1200 meters at a moderate pace. Your third type is long distance runs to get your body and mind used to running the full length of your race.

RACE DAY TIPS:

1. Do not start out too fast!! This is very common with first time runners, but even seasoned runners get their adrenaline pumping and end up going too fast too early. Force yourself to hold back a bit for the first ½ mile to mile. If not, you will run out of gas near the end when you try to kick it up for the final leg. 2. Have a plan and run your plan. 3. Don’t let obstacles scare you, most of them are added as creative fun and are not overly challenging. 4. Have tons of fun!!

GOLF

By Marc Dewall Head Golf Professional The Clubs Of Cordillera Ranch

SOUTHERN TEXAS PGA’S GOLF PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR

MARC DEWALL Once a year every year since 1968, the Southern Texas PGA has chosen one of its members to receive the honor of being its Golf Professional of the Year. The honoree for 2010 was Marc DeWall, the clubs of Cordillera head golf professional. He was awarded the STPGA’s highest award - Head Golf Professional of the year at the annual STPGA meeting held in March 2011 at Horseshoe Bay. The recipient is chosen on the basis of his or her overall performance as a PGA golf professional, level of service to the Southern Texas PGA, image and ability to inspire fellow professionals. DeWall has been a PGA Professional since 1992 and has spent his entire career working within the STPGA. A Nebraska native, DeWall attended the University of Nebraska his freshman year of college and was a walk-on collegiate golfer. He transferred to St.

20 | MAY/JUNE 2011

Mary’s University in San Antonio, where he received a scholarship and played golf for three years. He graduated from St. Mary’s in 1989, having earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in marketing and a minor in business management. He immediately took a job at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, and his transition to “Texan” was complete. DeWall served as The Dominion’s head professional for over 11 years. In March 2006, he joined The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch.Throughout most of his career as a PGA Professional, DeWall has taken time to serve the Southern Texas PGA. He first sat on the Section’s Board of Directors in 1999 and he has been actively involved ever since. He has served as the STPGA’s President for the past two years, as its vice-president in 2007 and 2008, and as its secretary in

2005 and 2006. While he has worked with and led several of the STPGA’s committees, he points to a couple of experiences as “special.” “One of the most rewarding things I did was serving as chairman of the STPGA’s Annual Meeting Committee for 1998,” said DeWall. “We held the meeting in San Antonio and that’s what got me started serving the Section’s membership and our educational programs.” DeWall received the STPGA’s 2001 Horton Smith Award for his efforts to improve the educational opportunities offered STPGA members by the Section. “I also had the opportunity to work closely with our national organization when the PGA held its annual meeting in San Antonio in 2003, and, of course, working with our Section’s Sponsorship Committee was a valuable experience,”

said DeWall. “I’ve always enjoyed the business side of the Section’s activities, getting in front of the people we work with and who support us to discuss what we do and how those people can help us accomplish our missions to the benefit of golf in southern Texas.” Communications, committee involvement, sponsorships and fiscal management are a few areas of STPGA operations in which DeWall believes his term as president has had significant impact. “I think we’ve done a great job of communicating real information to our Section members and apprentices during the past couple of years. We have also worked hard to refocus our various

committees on their assigned tasks,” said DeWall. “We have planted the seeds for getting more PGA members involved in the Section through the committee structure. I believe this is the way we will continue to make our Section even stronger moving forward.” “I think the same things can be said about our sponsorships and fiscal management,” he added. “It’s no secret that the economy has presented us with increasing challenges in those areas. Our overall sponsorships have remained solid as we understand more than ever the importance of building and maintaining relationships with the companies and individuals that support us. Also, Mike Ray and his staff have done a great job

COVER FEATURERY

By Ben Schooley Photography By West Vita

So from that first job working the cotton fields, Jan went on to become the President of AT&T Texas, and did so not through planning and sheer determination; but simply by defying the odds.

Jan Newton’s first job was picking cotton. Wanting to save up for her first car, she hit the cotton fields on her family’s cotton farm in Brownfield, Texas that has been in her family since her grandfather settled the property during the Homestead Act. Growing up in West Texas was tough, and Jan realized quickly that no matter which direction her life would take her, it would take hard work. So from that first job working the cotton fields, Jan went on to become the President of AT&T Texas, and did so not through planning and sheer determination; but simply by defying the odds. “I wanted to be a secretary,” Jan laughs from the kitchen table of her Cordillera Ranch home. “I got my work ethic from my parents, and they certainly worked hard in the cotton fields. Having done that, I knew that I didn’t want to do it anymore. So

28 | MAY/JUNE 2011

I went to Texas Tech and majored in Business. When you go to work in corporate America, and you are halfway successful, people think you must have strove for it your whole life. But I didn’t. I really just wanted to be a secretary because I only knew that I wanted to get an education and get a job. I figured I could certainly get a secretary’s job! While at Tech, I was one of only two women in my entire class.” While at Texas Tech, Jan’s foundation was shaken severely, and she had to leave college for a semester. “My parents died seventeen days apart. I took the semester off to come home for a while. I came back to school and knew that I had to get an education so that I could take care of myself.” Despite the semester off, Jan graduated in three and a half years. She was the first college graduate in her family.

Jan married her high school sweetheart, and began the job hunt. “I went to Southwestern Bell and applied for a job because it was the only company I knew. They had an office in Lubbock. I had a degree, and they asked me if I wanted a management or non-management job. I asked if I could apply for both. So I did. They said for non-management job I had to take a test. During the 3 weeks as I waited to take the test, I got a rejection letter for the management job. I didn’t know why they rejected me, but I took the non-management test, and I guess I

30 | MAY/JUNE 2011

passed. They offered me a temp clerical job, and a service rep job. I didn’t know what either meant. I took the temp job, and I stayed at that level for 4 years. I eventually found out that I didn’t get the management job because I said I wouldn’t relocate on the application. I remember thinking that West Texas was all I had ever known, and relocating sounded scary!” After 4 years of stellar performance, Jan finally relented to relocation, and was moved to the San Antonio offices as a Supervisor in the accounting department in 1980. Quickly, she was moved to

St. Louis. “I got transferred to St Louis because that was the headquarters for Southwestern Bell and if you were going to make it far in the company, you had to go through headquarters. So I ended up there for 16 years. I was a single career mom from the time Kimber (daughter) was 5 until she was 21. That was my main focus.” With a career that was skyrocketing, and an empty home as her daughter had recently departed for Texas Tech, Jan’s life was about change. Frank Newton had a similar upbringing to Jan. Frank grew up in Butte, Montana, the child of a hospital

employee and the Parts Manager at a car dealership. An average middle-class family, Frank also figured out early on that it would take a lot of work for him to realize his dreams. Frank graduated from college with a degree in Chemical Engineering and eventually worked in the sales of diatomaceous earth, used in brewing. Ultimately, Frank was put in charge of the company’s largest account, Anheuser Busch, and was moved to St. Louis. The particular housing development that Frank lived in just so happened to also house Jan’s best friend. Soon after, Jan and Frank, via the mutual friend, were both invited out on an innocent golf outing. Jan laughs, “We didn’t know that we were being set up, but we were. We went on one date, and we knew that we wanted to be together. We went to an outdoor theatre and dinner, and we had a cup of coffee afterward. We were looking at each other, and we both confessed later that we knew we would be together forever.” Two and half years later, Jan and Frank had touched on the subject of marriage, but hadn’t officially made plans. Frank explains, “We were building a house together, and our builder put these little signs in front of the homes he was building that would say ‘The Future Home of Mr. and Mrs. X.’ I had him put on our sign ‘The Future Home of Mr. and Mrs. Newton.’ That’s how I proposed to her. I drove up, she saw it, and said Yes.” However, that Yes came with one condition. “I said Yes, but I’m moving to Dallas,”Jan recalls. “It was a tough point for us personally because we both had to make big decisions. They wanted me to run my operations out of Dallas. We both had over 20 years in our careers, and Frank needed to stay in St Louis because of Anheuser Busch. So we got married and we made the commitment to see each other every weekend. We did that for 9 months and they transferred me to San Antonio. Nine months there, and I was sent back to St Louis. We called it dating across the country. We made the decision we wouldn’t do that ever again.” But a short three years later, the Newtons were faced with the same decisions again. “They wanted her to move to Austin,” Frank explains. “I went to my company and told them that we weren’t going to do this long distance separation again. So they reorganized my company and put me in charge of all the distributors in the US. It made it so I could work from anywhere.” Jan continues, “They

moved me to Austin to be the President of AT&T Texas. I had relocated 7 times through my career. I worked in accounting, marketing, network planning, competitive analysis, and business sales. I had now been with them 30 years. This was in 2002. When I was there, one of my primary responsibilities was handling all of their regulatory and legislative affairs. My claim to fame was that the corporation needed to get the law changed to allow them to quickly enter the video market with their U-Verse product. At the time, all the statutes required you to get a local cable franchise. The market was exploding, and the future of AT&T really was on video. So we lobbied to pass a bill to get a statewide franchise. That was my quest. It was not really popular with the local franchises, but at a corporate level it was key. So in 2005, we were successful in getting enough support. I developed a great relationship with Governor Perry, and the reqired legislation was put into a special session and passed. That model is now in operation in 38 states.” After an exhausting navigation of the legislative system in Austin, Jan retired from AT&T in 2006. As Frank and Jan had both put so much into their careers, they also both knew that they wanted to retire early. So as they traveled the country for business, they would frequently book some time to search out potential retirement communities. Having seen an ad for Cordillera Ranch in Texas Monthly, they came to see the community. “We found our lot with Tracy Harris and we bought it. We figured that when we retired, we’d just sell it if we changed our minds. So we had the lot several years before we were ready to make the decision. But we kept coming down to see the lot, and we just loved it more and more. So we began making the design decisions with Boyce, our architect, and Damon (Christofilis), our builder. We moved in 3 years ago.” While the Newtons had every intention to fully retire, Jan was asked to sit on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Board. Serving 4 years, 2 as Chairwoman, Jan just recently retired from that, and she laughs, “Now I’m REALLY retired!” And now they’ve just gotten busier doing the things they love. “We love our lot here and we love working outdoors,” Jan says. “We love golf so much, and we spend most of our time outside. We love to travel. We hike. We typically take vacations where we can do

outdoor activities. We try to do a lot of the activities around Cordillera Ranch; we hosted a recent dinner club function, the nature club. I serve on the Cordillera Women’s Golf Association board. We participate with the Cibolo Nature Center quite a bit. We try to do lots of things around the Boerne community. We enjoy the sense of community that Cordillera fosters and how it gives back so much. When we built our home, we even tried to utilize only local contractors.” With the same focus that Jan and Frank had previously used to attack their careers, they are now attacking retirement. Jan explains, “I look at life in phases. I had the first phase, which was growing up, then the 2nd phase for me was finding out who I was from a professional perspective, then the 3rd is what you do later. That’s where we are now. We built the home, we want to travel, and we want to be actively involved in the community. It’s a different place for us now as we look at our objectives. We can’t find time to do all the things we want!” So, with successful careers in the books, Jan and Frank Newton have time to survey the landscape of their lives and take inventory. Frank adds, “One of the things I’ve always wondered was how Jan and I are alike, because while we grew up quite differently, we both had strong motivation to succeed. I think the one thing we’ve come to understand is that our desire to overcome and succeed is very important to us. My parents sacrificed a lot to send me to school, and I was one of the first kids to actually graduate college. Jan is the only one in her family. It was important to me to show my parents I could do it, and I tried to do things for them. Jan had that same desire”. Jan continues, “Losing my parents so young made me want to prove that I could take care of myself and be successful as a single mom and trying to have a career. I’ve always tried to look at life positively and those things help make you stronger. I will tell you something that Frank and I say everyday; every day, no matter what we had going on, we look at one another and say “Aren’t we lucky? And aren’t we the luckiest?” We’ve been so blessed, and to be at this stage in our lives and to be at Cordillera Ranch with so many wonderful people around. We say it every day. And we will never forget from whence we came.”

DEVELOPER

Cordillera Ranch BEST OF THE BEST

E

mbarking on plans to develop a master planned community that could span 20+ years, you are faced with decisions day one that have long-term implications. You are challenged to balance financial objectives with intrinsic values and core principles. As in many businesses, in the real estate business when these two paths collide sometimes the intrinsic values and core principles that are compromised for the sole purpose of achieving the financial targets - which is often a short-sighted solution for a long-term situation. At its core, one important distinction about the manner in which Cordillera Ranch has been developed is the emphasis on its core principles first and foremost and, with that, foregoing short-term gains in favor of long-term value-add opportunities. Many of the details are little subtle things that add up to create the unique feel that you get when driving through the community. It’s walking every single foot of a planned street and tweaking street alignments by a few feet here and there so that they meander around the massive oak trees or best capture a view and thus preserving a beautiful street-scape. It also means creating rear-entry private drives in certain areas so that the driveway access

34 | MAY/JUNE 2011

doesn’t cut straight up a hillside vertically and scar the hillside terrain that’s in the view of the rest of the community. Creating thorough restrictive covenants and enforcing these covenants stringently also sets Cordillera Ranch apart from the numerous other Hill Country communities. Every critical decision is tested with the question of - “How is this going to affect the look and feel of the community 20 years down the road?” What seems like a simple decision to bury all utilities underground is very uncommon in acreage estate developments - and far more costly. However, at the outset the developer, David Hill, was confident that it would be these details that would set Cordillera Ranch apart in the long-run even if it was more costly in the short-term. This attention to detail and the mission statement for Cordillera Ranch to, “Be good stewards of the land,” stems from a sentimental attachment to this beautiful land that’s uncommon for most developers in a master planned community development like this. David’s long history of spending vacation time on this Guadalupe River playground in the 1970’s and 1980’s with the Northington family forged a paternal bond with the ranch and a pride in developing

it to exceed all expectations and forever preserve the character of this beautiful ranch. It’s this bond that has driven decisions that continue to add value to the community. Because of this rare ability to persistently focus on the well-being of this ‘baby’, Cordillera Ranch has been recognized year-after-year for countless awards related to planning of the community, marketing, clubhouse design, golf course design, and many others. It’s this recognition and the overwhelming success of selling approximately 1,100 home sites to date that confirms the importance of the uncompromising decisions to stick to the mission. Among some of the accolades Cordillera Ranch has received over the years are Links Magazine’s designation as one of “America’s 100 Premier Properties” and Golf Inc. magazine’s recognition as one of five finalists for “Development of the Year” in 2007 and consistently rating as a top 10 golf course in Texas by the Dallas Morning News, which is one of the most comprehensive and respected golf rankings in the state and is comprised of approximately 100 panelists from all over Texas. “I have played a lot of golf courses around Texas, and the course at Cordillera Ranch is as good as any I’ve seen” said Drew Gillen, one of this year’s panelists and an amateur golfer from Tyler. “It’s the kind of course that is incredibly challenging but still fair. What makes it so unique is that each hole is so memorable. The natural beauty of the course makes it something special.” The Dallas Morning News also ranked Cordillera Ranch the “Best New Course in Texas” in 2008 and has ranked it the top golf course in the Hill Country every year since it opened. The drive to be the best at everything we do is evidenced in the golf club component with the recent accolades for the new clubhouse as well as the golf pro shop. The clubhouse won 3rd place in the Best New Clubhouse of the Year category by Golf Inc. and the South Texas PGA just awarded The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch with the Merchandiser of the Year award, which is a testament not only to the impressive pro shop but also the top-notch pro shop staff. Speaking of top staff, the South Texas PGA also awarded Cordillera Ranch Director of Golf, Marc Dewall, with the head golf professional of the year for 2010.”It’s hard to describe how big of an honor I consider this award. There is simply nothing better than being respected by your peers and having them acknowledge the work you have exerted on behalf of them and their organization,” says Dewall. These honors definitely solidify Cordillera Ranch’s position as a premier community and industry leader among private club communities, but the real barometer is the market acceptance and continued high demand for living the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle throughout the ups and downs of economic cycles. We look forward to continuing the tradition of detailed focus on the subtle attributes that culminate in one of the most unique lifestyles in the country.

STAFF PROFILE

BARRY DENTON DIRECTOR OF REAL ESTATE SALES

NAME: Barry Denton HOMETOWN: Born in Iowa City, Iowa. Moved to Kerrville in the mid-1970’s, so I’ve been in Texas most of my life and can’t imagine being from any place else. Texas is definitely a “state” of mind! FAMILY: Wife, Kathy Daughter, Cassie Son-in-law, Scott Grandson, Walker EDUCATION: Bachelor of Journalism/Public Relations The University of Texas at Austin HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR FIELD? I grew up in the homebuilding business and was surrounded by real estate development and golf. At an early age, I realized I liked being around both immensely. I think the design-build/develop process of creating something from nothing…and then doing it all over again is fun and rewarding. At this same time I was developing my golf background and was exposed to golf professionals like Ross Collins, David Pilsner, Jack Gaudion and Harvey Penick who all had an impact on who I am today. These guys made you want to be in the golf business! They all gave me opportunity and the support to succeed. Upon graduating UT in 1987, the real estate industry was struggling and I was enjoying the golf business, especially the teaching end, so I continued with golf and pursued my real estate license to remain attached to that industry. About a decade later, I was introduced to a gentleman involved with real estate development and soon thereafter transitioned to that business. After a couple years in sales, I moved into management, which allowed me to involve my sales & marketing background with the development team

36 | MAY/JUNE 2011

of a major real estate developer over the last ten years. The opportunity to join the Cordillera Ranch development and sales team earlier this year was a dream come true. Kathy and I have been enamored with Cordillera since becoming property owners and members in 2006. Our industry recognizes Cordillera’s success…not just in Texas, but in the entire Southwest Region of the U.S. Their ability to plan, execute and thrive while others have struggled is a testament to the development experience and leadership of the Hill Family. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be involved in real estate, marketing, development and golf at Cordillera Ranch. To a great extent, my life has come full circle. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CORDILLERA RANCH? 4 years as a property owner/member. Just a few months as Director of Real EstateSales. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING IN THE HILL COUNTRY? The natural beauty…and experiencing it every day. We’re spoiled to be in a such pretty part of the world and tend to take it for granted! WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS? Golf, fitness, college football. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT? Golf FAVORITE SPORTING EVENT YOU’VE ATTENDED?

The Masters. Television doesn’t do it justice. Augusta during the tournament is a spiritual experience. FAVORITE QUOTE? I have two actually…If it is to be, it is up to me.” -Ben Hogan. Ten simple twoletter words pretty much break down the complexities of life. I’m not sure who the second quote gets attributed to… ”You have two ears and one mouth…use them accordingly!”, but it has served me well in business and better in marriage! FAVORITE MOVIE AND WHY? I don’t have one favorite. I prefer action films because most of the time I just want to be entertained and escape for awhile. Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery are a couple of my favorite actors. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR BUSINESS? Enduring the last couple years! Few developers weathered the storm…fewer prospered and have the ability to set the standard moving forward. We’re lucky to be part of Cordillera Ranch on all counts. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE IN YOUR BUSINESS? People. I’ve had the great fortune of being around, working with, and learning from a lot of talented people. FAVORITE ASPECT OR FEATURE AT CORDILLERA RANCH? To me, Cordillera Ranch can be summed up in one word…LIFESTYLE!

The Shindig Style Fashion Show, hosted by Busbee Style, was a glamorous Cordillera event, complete with a red carpet and catwalk. There was a great turnout of more than 100 guests and the event raised thousands of dollars for two deserving charities: Boerne Young Life and the Kendall County Women’s Shelter. The fashion show took place under the pool pavilion as the sun was setting. The weather and scenery created the perfect backdrop for this exciting event. The fashion show featured a mix of cocktail attire and western wear…ideal looks for this year’s Cordillera Ranch Shindig. Special thanks to the Cordillera Ranch club staffers and Carlos Araiza for all their hard work and to the models who gave their time so generously for fittings and the show. Remember being a kid and it seemed like there just weren’t enough hours in a day to be outside during the summer? THE MANTA COASTER

AT SEAWORLD

You already know that your kids are going to drag you to at least one amusement park this summer, whether it be Six Flags Fiesta Texas or the infamous Texas water park, Schlitterbahn. And while you may be just as thrilled as the kids to wait in long lines in the broiling Texas heat and shell out $20 at a time for mediocre theme park cuisine, you should know that these aren’t your only options. SeaWorld in San Antonio is the world’s largest marine-life park, and in addition to roller coasters, great shows, special events and concerts, animal interaction and fine dining, it offers many more opportunities to cool off. This summer SeaWorld will also offer Day Camps, Sleepovers, Large Group Camps, and even Family Camps. Another exciting alternative would be San Antonio’s newest amusement park, Green Acres Golf and Games Inc. This park features the best of both worlds; a rural setting that is still inside 1604 for easy access from all parts of San Antonio. Attractions include two18 hole Miniature Golf Courses, Fast Go Karts, Paintball field, Bumper Boats with water squirters, Water Wars, Trampoline Thing, Batting Cages, Mining Sluice and Animaland to stuff and dress different animals of your choice. There is also a great game room and a full service snack bar. To top things off, the Green Acres facility is super clean with a great family atmosphere. Step outside the typical amusement park agenda this summer and explore what San Antonio really has to offer.

THE BEACH AT PORT ARANSAS

THE BEACH

Avoid the crowds in Padre and the murky waters in Galveston and check out Port Aransas this summer. Only three hours away means you can make it a day trip, and there are a million ways to have fun! You can enjoy the traditional quirks that beach-going has to offer— building sandcastles, scouting for seashells, tanning on the shore, surfing, sailing, splashing in the waves—or explore any of the other options that Port Aransas has to offer. You can take the kids for a ride on the free ferry or enter everyone in one of the many fishing tournaments offered, and then you can have a local eatery cook your catch! You can have a day out with the girls and purchase an original work of art at one of the coastal galleries and browse many eclectic boutiques in search of island treasures. When you are worn out from all the fun in the sun, you and your crew can relax and enjoy a show at the Port Aransas Community Theater. And if you decide to stay the night, stake out a campsite on 18 miles of uncrowded beach. No matter what you choose to do, Port Aransas will surely be a trip that you and the kiddos are not likely to forget.

EDUCATIONAL

It’s every parent’s dream to take the kids somewhere that provides entertainment and teaches them a few things at the same time. Luckily, San Antonio boasts a few of the best museums in Texas. The Witte Museum, located in the heart of San Antonio, is well known for its exciting Texas Wild and Dinosaur exhibits. Summer at the Witte promises to bring about an enthralling Mexican Art exhibit and continue with the ever-popular Amazon Voyage and San Antonio River exhibits. The kids will also have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Adventure Club at the Witte, where they will get to perform many hands-on activities and fun interactive games, see original artifacts, and interact with live animals! Additionally, if your family includes younger children, there is no doubt that they would have a blast at the San Antonio Children’s Museum, which also hosts several summer camps and amusing daily tours and activities. And if you are looking for a place more suited for every member of the family, Ripley’s would be the place you want to go. Hosting the Believe it or Not! Odditorium, the legendary Wax Museum, and the best gift shop around-- The Cargo Hold--Ripley’s in San Antonio is definitely a place that the entire family can enjoy.

CAVES

Natural Bridge Caverns is the place to go this summer! Located 20 minutes west of downtown Cordillera Ranch and offering many fun activities including several different types of tours, a mining company and rock shop, and the famous Watchtower Challenge, this beautiful and historical cavern system offers an experience that is high energy, fun, and family-oriented! If you are looking for other caverns to explore, there are many more options! San Marcos offers a one-of-a-kind show cave in Wonder World Park, also featuring rides and many other attractions. The illustrious Cave Without a Name resides in Boerne, (just outside the Cordillera Ranch west gate) and is said to be the most beautiful cavern in Texas. Cascade Caverns is also an attraction that lies in Texas Hill Country, merely 14 miles northwest of Fiesta Texas, and it features a one hour tour through corridor after corridor of timeless beauty in its cool, comfortable 68 degree natural environment. Whether you bring the family to one of these marvelous natural beauties or all of them, it will be sure to be an experience you will treasure forever. Don’t forget to bring a camera!

There is nothing quite like a weekend in the great outdoors with your family. Really, nothing quite like it. So unless you want the weekend of solitude to turn in to a weekend with whining, bickering children, and a grumpy spouse, a great location is key. We recommend Garner State Park. Located in northern Uvalde County, the park features 1420 acres of matchless recreational facilities. Visitors can swim in the clear waters of the Frio River, scoot its rapids on inner tubes, rent pedal boats, and hike its captivating nature trails. On long summer evenings, young folks (and the young at heart) meet at the concession building for jukebox dancing every night during the summer season. Nearby is a miniature golf course, which is lighted for nighttime playing. Meals and snacks are served in the concession building, though many families prefer to take advantage of the many camping sites and do their own cooking. A limited number of cabins are available for rent. The park offers camping, hiking, nature study, picnicking, canoeing, fishing, unsupervised swimming in the Frio River, seasonal miniature golf, paddle boat and kayak rentals, and surfaced bike riding. You will love the experience, the kids will have a blast, and the whole family will create memories that last a lifetime.

The trip has been set for December to take advantage of the best season in the Patagonia region of Argentina. The property stretches 8.6 miles along the Chimehu’n River and 4.3 miles along the Quilquihue River. The well-known Chimehuín is the larger of the two rivers that flow through the property. It meanders through the valley and its side channels also present wonderful angling opportunities. The Quilquihue River is three times smaller than the Chimehuín. It is a little steeper and has larger rocks. Both are known worldwide for their fish and the magnificence of their waters. Everything is arranged for fly fisherman to have an unforgettable stay including specialized guides, vehicles, all meals and trips to nearby rivers and lakes. Tipiliuke lodge also has aprivate spring creek! The spring fed creek project was designed by a specialist engineering firm from Montana and adds an extra dimension to the world class fishing at Tipiliuke.

After a day in the field, return to the comfort of Argentina’s finest lodge, Estancia Tipiliuke, where you will enjoy the hospitality and impeccable service that make Argentina famous. Tipiliuke is a unique place located in the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by Argentina’s most breathtaking natural splendors. The Estancia’s 60,000 acres of land offers endless activities from skiing to horseback riding to mountain biking. We’ll experience the refined gourmet cuisine and knowledgeable personalized service at this luxurious and exclusive lodge, while experiencing world-class fishing in the heart of Patagonia. This is truly an avid outdoor paradise! We’ll also play two world class golf courses on the trip. The first course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at San Martín de los Andes, the Chapelco Golf Club, which had its grand opening in 2006, the same year The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch opened. Chapelco Golf & Resort is located a few miles from the tranquil town of San Martin de los Andes, amid the spectacular scenery of the Andes Mountains in the heart of the Argentinean Patagonia. The course is set in a peaceful environment surrounded by unspoiled nature and native vegetation. The second course we’ll play is the El Desafío Mountain Resort, a Greg Norman Signature Course which is scheduled to open this year. El Desafío is a unique luxury development encompassing an entire mountain of 2,500 acres in the Patagonia region. In addition to an 18-hole championship golf course, the Resort has set aside a full 1,440 acres as a nature reserve in a pristine environment affording amazing views of the Andes. FEATURE

HELP FIGHT TERRORISM

by

FOSTERING A PUPPY By: Rebecca Rainer

When Cordillera Ranch residents Terry and Carol Graham first spotted a pen of Labrador Retriever puppies in the Boerne Park on Main Street, they knew they were hooked. Upon further investigation, the couple learned that these weren’t just ordinary cute puppies. These black and yellow Labs would grow up to protect the nation’s traveling public--but only with the help of families like the Grahams. “We had never heard of the TSA Puppy Program until that fall day in the park,” Terry explained. “We knew that fostering one of the dogs was a big commitment, but I think patriotism moved us to do it. We can’t go to Afghanistan, but maybe our helping raise a dog will, in a small way, help fight terrorism.” After making that decision and

48 | MAY/JUNE 2011

undergoing a home visit and orientation class, the Grahams became official “Puppy-walkers,” as they signed up to be a foster family for the Transportation Security Administration’s Puppy Program. The Grahams then took home Qqualls, the black Lab puppy that they raised for nearly a year. According to Program Manager Scott Thomas, the Grahams are two of the unsung heroes of the program. “I am held in awe of all the volunteers who have done so much for this program,” said Thomas. “I can never express strongly enough how the backbone of this program is our volunteers - who are to me our heroes.” Thomas runs the 10-year-old program out of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. A division of the TSA Canine Breeding and Development Center, the

Puppy Program is part of a global effort to breed working explosives detection dogs. Center officials are breeding better detector dogs to work at airports, ferry terminals and rail stations, while regular citizens are performing a vital part by serving as foster families for the puppies until one year of age. In addition to protecting our nations mass-transit centers, puppies bred and raised in the TSA Puppy Program have gone on to provide security for Air Force One. Those with the patience to raise a puppy and the desire to help fight terrorism are screened, interviewed in their home, and pending approval, receive a puppy at about 10 weeks of age. TSA provides all food, equipment and medical care to raise a healthy puppy. “Puppy-walkers”- the nickname for the foster families - are responsible

for returning the pup to the TSA office one week each month for medical and behavioral evaluations. Puppies are returned to TSA for their next phase of training and development at approximately one year of age. “Research has shown us that a foster home provides a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment to help socialize these dogs in their first year of life,” said Thomas. “Simply by having the young pups in their homes and taking them on weekly outings far increases our chances of success in creating a skilled, working dog to labor on the front lines of public safety.” “When I’d take Qqualls around town for his outings, people knew this energetic little dog in the red vest was something special,” recounted Terry. “At first people think it’s just a dog. But when a bomb shows up in a suitcase at an airport and a dog like Qqualls can keep it from injuring anyone, then people realize this isn’t just any dog.” “When one of the early reports indicated that Qqualls was timid on steps,” explained Carol, We searched for buildings with outside steps that he could use for practice, and soon Qqualls was up and down like a pro.” On March 11th, Qqualls officially graduated from the program, with his handler, and became one of more than a hundred Puppy Program graduates assigned to a mass transit location within the United States. Another hundred are assigned to other agencies to fill their canine needs. All are named after victims from the September 11, 2001 attacks or military soldiers fighting the war on terror overseas. The Graham’s “Qqualls” carries the namesake of Marine Lance Cpl. Louis W. Qualls, who was killed Nov. 16, 2004 by enemy action in Iraq. “If a 19-year-old kid can be strong enough to fight for my freedom and pay the ultimate price in war, the least I can do is to take a puppy out a few times in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom,” said Terry. “Helping raise these puppies is not asking very much when you consider what people are doing for our country.” “Unlike other volunteer opportunities, we know that our Puppy Program takes a special family to commit both the time and energy in raising an energetic puppy, and their role in the program is vital. Most of our volunteers realize that if they take care of these puppies today, these dogs will take care of them in the future,” added Thomas. Terry says he and Carol joined TSAPP in order to give something back to this country that has given so much to them, and adds that Qqualls will always have a special place in their hearts. “You get a good feeling that you’re doing something to help your country,” said Terry. “I think you get a sense of satisfaction knowing that you’re doing something that will ultimately help in protecting your children, and even your grandchildren, against bad things.” If you are interested in learning more about the TSA Puppy Program or want to be a volunteer Puppy-walker, you can visit www.tsa.gov and enter “Puppy Program,” or call 210-671-1624.

Ask a horse person why they are involved with horses, and you are likely to hear how the horses supply stress relief, put much needed “sanity” back into an otherwise hectic life, provide a way to breathe clean air, clear their thoughts and simplify life if just for a while; a sort of therapy if you will. There is a completely different segment of the horse industry that provides therapy on a much more literal and visceral level. There are a few therapeutic riding centers in the San Antonio area and we would like to introduce you to one of them. Equessense, located in Marion, Texas was proudly founded by Judy Hendon. Judy has an impressive list of educational credentials that follow her name, including a Summa Cum Laude BA in Social Work/Sociology, as well as a Summa Cum Laude Masters of Education in Special Education with an endorsement in behavior disorders and Autism. However, Judy’s emergence into the world of therapeutic riding began quite by chance. In 1974, her son was born with profound brain damage and was expected to do little more than live his life strapped to a wheelchair having no expectations for a normal life. Not one to “settle”, she set about finding a way to help her son beat the odds. Using her vast knowledge of

the developmentally challenged, her life-long affiliation with horses, and her openness to alternative methods, Judy saw a way to merge them all together to help her son. Horses along with other conventional methods of therapy taught Judy’s son balance, coordination, helped his reflexes, improved his confidence and helped him achieve many more skills that have now enabled him to live an independent life as a single parent with no need for social-service assistance of any kind. Judy saw the benefit of horses as a means of therapy and in 1994 decided to make it her life’s work, by forming Equessense. According to Judy, there are several areas of development that are greatly affected by equine therapy. She says, “Equestrian therapy integrates developmental, cognitive, behavioral and group therapy. Empowerment is a key component in healing from trauma and victimization. Few things are more empowering than controlling a 1,000 pound animal. Riders learn to value themselves. They develop self control and coping strategies, impulse control, communication skills and team work. These are skills and character traits that will be permanently assimilated into the personalities of these young people impacting the rest of their lives.” In

addition, Judy states, “The rhythmical motion of the horse stimulates all of the rider’s nerves and muscles as well as improves reflexes and balance, and increases strength and stamina. It utilizes all four quadrants of the brain stimulating motor integration, the brain’s ability to integrate all of its functions.” Thirdly, she says, “Riding is a multi-sensory experience. The sounds, the smells, the tactile sensations, the visuals are so rich you can practically taste them all. Riders with sensory interpretation or integration issues benefit from all of this sensory input by increasing their sensory awareness and decreasing their sensory defensiveness.” Another area of benefit is developmentally. Judy says, “Children whose neurological systems are not intact struggle with every day tasks that most can do effortlessly. Many of these kids are cognitively on target in bodies that they can’t control. Horse back riding stimulates neurotransmissions across the midline of their brain which eventually becomes neurological pathways.” Additionally, “Children with learning differences usually don’t interpret information given by auditory or visual modalities. What you tell them or show them doesn’t translate into learning. They learn by doing. Horses teach kinesthetically. This works out

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 55

perfectly for individuals who have language impairments, cognitive or developmental delays.” And finally, the improvement in social skills according to Judy is profound. “Many people with special needs, especially those who are on the autism spectrum, have difficulty in social situations. They tend to be “in their own worlds” and the capacity to relate to others has to be learned through structured activities. Experiential riding is a perfect setting to teach people cooperation, empathy, turn-taking, the ability to encourage others, sportsmanship, and even that it is alright to lose sometimes.” The success stories that come from Judy’s program are endless. There are Jerri and John, a married couple. Jerri has hydrocephalous, and John is autistic. They have been riding with Judy since 1999. hey ride weekly and the horses have given them a way to form a deeper bond with one and other, as well strengthen their individual weaknesses which makes for a more complete and fulfilled life together. When Philip began riding 4 years ago, he had to be held in a sitting position as he was unable to control any part of his body. When Philip rides a horse, the side to side swaying movement simulates walking which in turn has reduced his spasticity, improved his reflexes and motor skills, and he is now able to sit on a horse for up to five minutes un-assisted. “He has been through so many catastrophic medical issues, but nothing has diminished his joy and laughter. Philip is an example of an angel in human form,” brags Judy. None of these stories would be possible if it weren’t for the many amazing equine partners that call Equessense home. It takes a very special horse to be entrusted with the very special people Judy and her volunteers teach. Many therapy horses are in their golden years, and bring a wealth of education, experience, and tolerance with them. The horses at Equessense must earn their place, proving that they are the right fit for the program. Judy and her staff are experts at evaluating horses and finding ones that are suitable to be therapy horses. Judy has a very special way of describing them, “Our entire herd consists of wonderful, special, exceptional individuals--much like our riders. Each has his or her

56 | MAY/JUNE 2011

own role, specific types of riders they benefit; specific jobs that they do well. I am so grateful to be so blessed with these magnificent equine friends. All are precious, much valued treasures.” Judy cannot say enough good things about her volunteers. She maintains, “Volunteers are the back bone of our program. Without them we wouldn’t exist. The various jobs that our volunteers do are numerous, but most common are: gathering the horses from the field, grooming, saddling, leading, facilitating exercises, skills lessons and games, unsaddling, putting the horses up and just interacting positively with our athletes. After warm-ups and skills we usually take a trail ride with them. We also have other events like BBQ’s, bon fires, work days, annual Special Olympics games as well as play-day competitions and fund raisers.” There are also many sponsors that are essential to help with the funding of Equessense. Each year around Valentines Day, there is an event held at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, sponsored by the Alamo City Gypsies Motorcycle Club, called the Saint Valentines Day Massacre. Judy says, “These guys are the heroes of Equessense, and we wouldn’t be here if not for them.” The annual bike rally draws bikers from all over, to raise money for a very worthy cause. The bike club dedicates about half of its year planning it, and then they give all of their profits to therapeutic riding. Words can’t describe what they mean to the success of the program. We at the Equestrian Center at Cordillera are very fortunate to employ a former volunteer at Equessense. Amanda Rios worked with Judy, her special students and amazing horses for 4 years. She has an in depth knowledge of the benefits of therapeutic riding and experience with all levels of special needs. Amanda learned a great deal of her expertise with horses by working with and for Judy at Equessense. She would be more than happy to share her experiences and assist you in finding a suitable therapy program if the need is there. You can learn more about Judy and Equessense by visiting her website at www.equessense.com. She is always looking for donation horses, volunteers, and sponsors.

Tuscan Dreams

w

FROM HOUSTON TO THE HILL COUNTRY, A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN BECOMES A WEEKEND HAVEN By Bethany Heinesh

hen Houston residents Robert and Michelle Hobbs decided they needed a place to retreat to on the weekends, they headed west. Seeking tranquility, captivating scenery and starry skies, the couple was on the lookout for a place they could escape to –a place where they could get away from their intensely stressful jobs and truly leave work behind for the weekend. Upon discovering the Texas Hill Country on a road trip, the couple knew they had found what they were looking for; a quiet refuge just three hours away. We immediately fell in love with this area and began making regular trips here,” Robert said, explaining he and Michelle even rented an apartment in Boerne after staying at several nearby bed and breakfasts. While a weekend hiatus to temporary accommodations was fun, the Hobbs were always dreaming of the day they could call the

68 | MAY/JUNE 2011

Hill Country home. “It wasn’t long before we started talking about building here–it just made sense. Michelle and I wanted a place to enjoy on the weekends until we could one day retire and move here permanently. Even though we are a ways from retirement, we decided to go for it and put some roots down in Boerne.

Once we made that decision, everything else just clicked. Soon we found our lot and then our builder, Authentic Custom Homes, and with the help of King Bravo and his team, we began turning our dream into a reality.” After deciding to build in 2008, Robert and Michelle were drawn to Cordillera Ranch and met with one of the area’s finest real estate agents, Gary Peterson, who told the couple, “I’ve got the right lot for you.” Robert joked, “When we saw the lot, it was a no-brainer. This is some of the prettiest land in Cordillera. We left a check that day.” The Hobbs agree it was the land that really sealed the deal and nudged them to act fast. One only need glance around Robert and Michelle’s premier six-acre parcel to understand what they mean by prime real estate. The Hobbs residence is set in an absolutely gorgeous landscape with a dynamite view. They even have their own private park area, complete with a private stream, a view of the Guadalupe River as well as quick and easy access to the park and trail system in Cordillera. Choosing Cordillera Ranch was a cinch for the Hobbs, who appreciated the many activities offered within the community, and choosing the site was easy; but selecting the details that would transform their house into a home wasn’t quite as simple. “When we thought about what

features we wanted our one day retirement home to have, we basically made up a wish list and gave it to Jim (Terrian), who drew up the design and transformed our ideas into real possibilities,” Robert explained. “He helped us narrow down our choices, which seemed a bit overwhelming at first. Creating the home we wanted included a lot of decisions, so it was nice to have Jim direct the process and narrow our choices based on what we told him we wanted.” Jim Terrian, an Authentic Homes architect, essentially masterminded the incredible indoor and outdoor space the Hobbs now take so much pleasure in. Jim says he not only enjoyed working with Robert and Michelle, he had a fantastic time designing their 4,500 square-foot home and guesthouse. Jim admits, however, that he couldn’t have gotten the job done without his project manager, Ted Robinson. “The Hobbs were great communicators, which was part of our success in making this home so beautiful, but it was Ted’s ability to take a conceptual design and do all the things necessary to bring about a final product that made any of this possible.” After a creative process that spanned two years, Robert and Michelle began officially moving into their home in Cordillera at the beginning of January and although they are still in the process of buying furniture and accents for their

home, they have settled in quite nicely. In fact, the Hobbs couldn’t be more delighted with their two story, threebedroom home, complete with twoand-a-half baths. Robert is especially smitten with his study, situated just across from the master bedroom, and the upstairs game room. His study is finished with floor-to-ceiling alder wood bookcases, doors that open to the front courtyard and hard-wood floors, creating a studious environment that motivates thoughtful reflection. “Robert spends most of his time in here and he occasionally will step out into the courtyard and enjoy a cigar. As for the game room, what can I say –he needed a place for his drums,” Michelle laughed. “He loves playing the drums.” Robert joyfully showed off another of his home’s most exceptional features, what he considers a real masterpiece – a picturesque wine cellar chilling some of the finest vino at 56 degrees. Built into a prominent stone wall that stands boldly as the far left wall of the formal dining room, the cellar is finished with a distinctive chandelier inside. Adorned with glass grapes; this unique piece has become a running joke between Robert and Michelle. “I always liked it and I’ve kept it around for three years. Michelle was convinced I’d never make good use of it, but it really works in here.” The chandelier is certainly a nice complement to the wine cellar’s custom door by San

Marcos Doors, complete with wrought iron grapes. The Hobbs home has a very unique feel to it –as if there is a three-story element at work. There’s the main floor of the home, which includes the master bedroom and a guest room, a master and a half -bath, Robert’s study, the living room, the laundry room, the formal dining room and a kitchen, complete with a breakfast nook for eating. The second story is home to the game room, a spacious guest room and bath and an observation deck. The lowest level, a six-foot drop from the couple’s first story patio, grants access to a private stream and the couple’s own park area. Adjacent to the Hobbs’ home is a spacious and comfortable guest home with kitchenette, available year-round

70 | MAY/JUNE 2011

to the Hobbs’s loved ones with features that will make visits more comfortable for aging parents. “One of the most challenging parts about this project, which also made for one of the most amazing components of the house, is that it is built on a sloping site with a 12-foot fall,” Jim said. “We had our parameters and knew what Michelle and Robert wanted to build, so I think we ended up with a smooth transition from the front of the home to the back part of the property. We worked with the contour of the land, which paved the way for an interesting project.” When asked what style had the most influence in constructing this luxury weekend/retirement home, Robert answered, “We took a trip to Tuscany

and just loved it there. We wanted to incorporate the Tuscan style into our home, which is why you see the archways, the wrought iron and wood timbers combined with brick and stone. Plus, Cordillera feels like Tuscany to me, so that’s an added bonus.” Robert, the CEO of an oil and gas corporation; and Michelle, vice president of human resources at a deep water drilling company, say getting out of Houston and breaking away from the incredible responsibility that comes with each of their careers has become a necessary part of their routine. “Just to get that physical distance from the job and the hustle of life in the big city is like lifting a ton of bricks,” Michele smiled. “Robert and I are both much more balanced and peaceful

people when we go back to work every Monday because we have had a thoroughly relaxing, almost spiritual weekend here in Cordillera.” When the Hobbs began thinking about what they were looking for in a Hill Country home, they decided they wanted a house that was functional and stylish with a focus mostly on the outdoors. “Because we truly love being outside and want to spend a lot of time out here, we invested in some custom outdoor features,” said Michelle. In front, there is a gorgeous courtyard, revealed only after being buzzed in at the Hobbs’ walk-in Tuscan-style entrance. Finished with an aged wood and wrought iron door that combines elegance and class, the entrance to the Hobbs home says, “Come on in, y’all,”

be it ever so subtly. In back, an outdoor flat screen television hangs above an inviting back patio fireplace, set adjacent to a deck that overlooks the breath-taking Texas Hill Country. Additionally, the edgeless sparkling pool and Jacuzzi by Pristine Pools were designed with good times in mind. The Hobbs’ house is also equipped with a very colorful bathroom, just across from the outdoor fireplace. The half bath has two doors –one leading to the home’s indoor living space, the other outside to the pool area– just to make sunning and swimming more convenient for guests. The second-story observation deck is soon to be finished with a highpowered telescope, ideal for stargazing, another outdoor feature the couple is

looking forward to enjoying. “The stars out here on a clear night are absolutely amazing,” said Michelle. When the Hobbs got married in 2007, they created a beautifully blended family and when thinking of the design for their dream home, they wanted each of their children to have something to look forward to when they joined them on weekend visits. Tucker and Lili, Michelle’s black lab and golden retriever, got their very own alcove and hallway equipped with Dutch doors and they enjoy morning jogs around the neighborhood with Michelle. Robert’s two teenage daughters share their own upstairs room just off the game room. The girls got what every teenage girl is after in a home –an awesome bathroom with separate vanities. “And

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 71

Robert wanted to live in a golf community, so we all got what we wanted,” said Michelle. Michelle’s small touches have made a big difference to the overall look and feel of her Hill Country haven –there’s an ambiance of a woman’s touch throughout the Hobbs’ home, a perfect balance to Robert’s more masculine preferences. From an expansive laundry room to a customized kitchen, the stone fireplace centered in her living room to the lush outdoor landscape, Michelle says she thoroughly enjoyed selecting all the things that would make her house complete. Her master bath is a beautiful array of stunning mosaic pieces and Italian tile. The accompanying master

72 | MAY/JUNE 2011

bedroom is the perfect size –not to big, not too small. “I wanted a bedroom that wasn’t huge,” said Michelle. “And I love that our bath area is spacious and accommodating for two, but not too large. Plus, I love my closets, which have incredible drawer space.” In designing the interior of their home, Michelle and Robert decided to support the local economy. The couple has gone shopping at local mom and pops and have already purchased several striking pieces of art from local galleries. Robert and Michelle look forward to many years at their new Hill Country locale, a space so new to Cordillera Ranch, even the guard can’t give directions to it. They are

grateful to the entire Authentic CustomHomes team for constructing a home that is sure to be the center stage for many soon-to-be-made happy memories. “People work so hard to make these kinds of things happen and we feel blessed that we have the opportunity to belong to such a wonderful community, in a home that far exceeded my expectations.” Robert said. “To one day have the pleasure of retiring here makes it all worthwhile. In the meantime, Michelle and I plan to enjoy what we have worked so hard to build as often as we can.”
