The days of the bustling turn-of-the-century Main Street are alive and well in Boerne. In the heart of this charming Texas town lies the famed Hill Country Mile, a collection of locally -owned shops, boutiques, hotels, restaurants and galleries along the historic downtown Main Street or Hauptstrasse, as the original German settlers called it. For the record, the Hill Country Mile is actually 1.1 miles long because we have to do everything just a little bit bigger in Texas. Stretching from Oak Park Drive to Richter Avenue, the Mile is home to over 46 historic properties built between the 1850s through 1920s, and more than 100 local businesses dedicated to promoting the city’s art, culture and food scenes. 60 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021
Voted one of the “Top 25 Small Town Main Streets in America” by Country Living Magazine, the Hill Country Mile attracts thousands of visitors to Boerne every year. You will be welcomed with a dose of down-home hospitality, but the shops and restaurants are anything but antiquated. They feature modern merchandise and great cuisine in vintage architecture full of character. Now, it’s time to shop, stay, eat and play!
SHOP What is Main Street without shopping? The Hill Country Mile has dozens of shops to visit, including Bechants — a selection of fine gifts, clothing and home accessories, and a reputation for exceptional, personalized service, A Little Nature Store — purveyors of outdoor gifts and supplies, and Handmade on Main — a co-op featuring one-of-a-kind handmade items. Amy Bierstedt, owner of Handmade on Main and avid maker, even established National Handmade Day on April 1st.
