DREAM WEAVER BEN STILLER TALKS ABOUT NEW MOVIE THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY - THE MOST CHALLENGING AND MEANINGFUL FILM OF HIS CAREER… hat is Walter Mitty’s story about? STILLER: Walter is in charge of categorizing negatives for LIFE magazine. He takes care of photographs that the photographers send in. He’s meticulous. He cares about his work. He is entrusted with a valuable negative from Sean O'Connell (Sean Penn), who is the magazine’s most famous photographer. Walter finds out that the magazine is going out of business and he needs to find this negative. It is important because Sean thinks it should be the cover of the last issue of LIFE. At the same time, he really likes a girl at work, Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), but he doesn't quite know how to talk to her. From here, his journey begins.

W

What kind of man is your Walter Mitty? He is actually leading an okay life. He's just not living the full life that he always imagined for himself. He accepted that about himself a while ago. But when he meets Cheryl, she opens something in him that he is trying to connect to. He is also facing losing his job. All these elements conspire to push him into taking a dramatic step, taking a big chance. At the same time he has been trying to take care of his mother (Shirley MacLaine) and

his sister (Kathryn Hahn). He has been the responsible one in the family since his Dad died when he was a teenager. He had lots of ideas about what he wanted to do that he never really fulfilled and he ends up going on a journey that he probably should have taken years ago. Why did you want Kristen Wiig to play Cheryl? Kristen is a brilliant comedic actress. I knew that when I first saw her on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. She is REALLY brilliant. I thought she should be the girl that Walter wants to connect with, because an audience could really invest in her. They really like her and she is a good person inside, but she also has a lot of layers and depth to her. She is so naturally funny and I wanted to see her doing something a little different. I thought the audience could root for her and Walter to be together. Also she's a very subtle actress. I really enjoyed working with her, because she has the ability to go as far as you want her to go, but she enjoys keeping a lid on it. The film is completely different from the 1947 version of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY with Danny Kaye isn’t it? I thought it would be very hard to remake the Danny Kaye movie, because it had already been done so well. It was a musical comedy and from an era when they did that sort of film better than it's ever been done. Steve Conrad (screenwriter), had a different take that I felt was more relatable for me and hopefully for a modern audience. This film is not just about a guy who has crazy daydreams. It is about a guy who is trying to get in touch with himself. I liked the idea of the guy stepping out into the world and actually trying to make a change. What was it like having Shirley MacLaine as your mother?

Well, first of all, Shirley is hilarious. I love the idea of her playing slightly against type in this film. She is that incredibly acerbic, funny, sharp-witted Shirley, but she's also a gentle and very spiritual person. There is an innocence she has in the role. Shirley is iconic. Look at the movies she has been in: from THE APARTMENT to BEING THERE to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. They are incredible performances and she brings so much emotion to her work. You can see it in a look or a twinkle in the eye. It was very exciting to work with her Why do you think the original James Thurber short story still resonates with people? The writing is beautiful and there's a melancholy tone to that story. I wanted that tone to translate to this movie. It is the idea that we all have so much inside of us that nobody knows about. Inside we're all heroes who go unnoticed. Walter sees so much but nobody really sees him and I thought that was a beautiful idea. How challenging was it directing and acting at the same time. It is always frustrating, because you always want to be a better director for your actor and a better actor for your director. You wish you’d hired a better actor! What does THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY mean to you? It's been an incredible experience because there was a camaraderie with all the people making the movie. I think at the end of the day all you take away when you make a movie is the experience. I'm really the proud of the experience that we had and I hope that the film connects with audiences in some way. That’s all you can ask! •

BEYONCÉ (New York, NY; Parkwood Entertainment/ Columbia Records; Friday, December 13, 2013) –The fifth solo studio album from Beyoncé is now available worldwide, exclusively on the iTunes Store The selftitled set is the artist’s first visual album. BEYONCÉ is infused with 14 new songs and 17 visually stunning, provocative videos shot around the world from Houston to New York City to Paris, and Sydney to Rio de Janeiro, all before the album’s release. “I see music,” says Beyoncé about her decision to create a visual album. “It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.” That the album is available on the day the world is learning about its release is an unprecedented strategic move by the artist to deliver music and visual content directly to her fans when she wants to and how she wants to, with no filter. This unique approach allows music fans to be the first to listen, view, engage and form

their own opinions void of any middleman. In the age of social media and an insatiable appetite for direct communication, this is the answer to the question asked over and over again, when is Beyoncé’s next album coming? “I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she states. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.” www.itunes.com/beyonce.

Helen Ruth’s unique scarf designs are influenced by wild Scottish landscapes, as well as animals, fairytales and traditional folklore. The distinctive designs are instantly recognisable with their vibrant colours and imaginative prints, incorporating eye-catching beautiful detailing with subtle dark undertones to give each design a secretive hidden meaning. High quality wools and silks give a luxurious feel to the scarves, with digital printing being carried out within the Centre for Advanced Textiles in Glasgow, Scotland. Helen Ruth prints are created using Helen’s own drawings, photos and inspirations, brought together as creative collages which are printed onto the highest quality of fabrics, with garments then hand-sewn by Helen for the most luxurious quality finish. Helen Ruth was established by Grays School of Art Textile Honours graduate Helen Greensmith. Based in Aberdeenshire, Helen entered the national 2010 Como-Texprint scarf design competition, leading the designer to Como, Italy; the hub of the silk printing industry, designing in one of the main print studios. On her return to the UK, Helen decided to launch the Helen Ruth brand and Scotland’s newest accessory design label was born.

wo sisters from Cumbernauld Aimée Hipson and Mia Hipson - are both performing in this year’s panto The New Magical Adventures of Pinocchio at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow. The sisters are both students at Robert Hamilton’s Dance School, whose dancers also performed in last years panto The Wizard of Never Woz. Aimee (14) performed in the show last year, but for younger sister Mia - only 9 years old - this year was her first. Mia said: “When I was backstage and heard it being announced that the show was about to start that was when I got excited and nervous, but once I was onstage it was amazing and one of the best things I’ve ever done”. Mia has performed and is now on the reserve list for future performances. Older sister Aimee is now something of a seasoned pro - she performed in 20-odd shows last year - and is enjoying performing again with her group, and of course the incredible cast. Aimee said: “Robert’s Dance School has been amazing for me and Mia, and I love performing with my group (The Blue Group) and the cast and crew have all been really helpful and friendly. It is the most amazing experience performing in front of such a big crowd and especially at Christmas.”

The cast includes Michelle McManus (The Blue Fairy), Dean Park (Geppetto), Stephen Purdon (Pinocchio), Shebahn Littlejohn (Lampwick) Joyce Falconer (Kitty The Kat), and the irrespressible Johnny Mac as Jimmy Cricket. The panto also stars local girl Deone Robertson - a professional dancer who also currently holds the title of Miss European. The Panto runs until Jan 19th and there are various 2 for 1 offers for different dates. Check the website for bookings at www.pavilionpanto.com or call the Box Office Hotline 0141 332 1846.

INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE Financial advice with Tom Munro www.tommunro.co.uk In his recent autumn budget speech Chancellor George Osborne said he was “proud” have been part of a government that introduced the current ‘triple-lock’ for pension increases - which is due to end at the end of this parliament - and that a further increase in the state pension of £2.95 a week would be introduced from April 2014. From October 2015 a new class of voluntary national insurance contributions, known as Class 3A, will be introduced. These voluntary contributions give those who reach state pension age before 6 April 2016 an opportunity to boost their additional state pension.

2040s. As a result, those in their forties will not get a state pension until they are 68, while those in their thirties will have to wait until they are 69. A link to life expectancy is also expected to mean rises will continue into the future, to eventually well beyond age 70. As a result of these changes, whose who still want to retire at 60 or 65, will need to engage in sensible retirement planning – looking at the income you earn today and projecting forward to your planned retirement age. Receiving your state pension later means you have to fund the gap from when you retire to state pension age.

All very well you might say for those in receipt of state pension, or approaching retirement, but what about the masses still trying to plan ahead? Those a long way from retirement, saw the pension income pushed farther away, as Mr. Osborne confirmed speculation that millions will have to wait longer so that state pension “keeps tracks with life expectancy”, with some predicting children born today will not retire until they are 77. The date when the state pension age increases to 68 will be brought forward to the mid-2030s - it had not been due to kick in until 2046 - and the age will then increase to 69 by the late

In order to consider the most appropriate long-term investment strategy, disentangle all the complex legislation surrounding retirement planning and consider if the current provision you are making is adequate, why not take advantage of a free financial ‘health check’ in the new year, it could end up being the best decision you ever made. Wishing all readers a successful and prosperous 2014.
