i n si de r “starred up” stars Jack o’connell (“harry Brown”, “skins”, “eden lake”) as 19 yearold eric love, a violent and troubled teenager making the difficult transition from a young offenders’ institute to adult prison. he seems to be destined for a life behind bars, but the prison’s unconventional therapist (rupert Friend) is determined to help eric find a way through, assisted by of one of the prison’s longest serving inmates – neville (Ben mendelsohn) – who just happens to be eric’s father.

S

tarred Up is a powerful film that turns an unflinching eye to the cruelty depicted within the fictional prison walls, while at the same time revealing hidden layers of camaraderie and hope amidst the violence. The focus is on emotional truth not stylization or glamorization. Also woven into the narrative are details about prison life that we have not often seen before, details which are revealed here with authority. Despite the tensions within the film, director David Mackenzie’s perspective is ultimately a compassionate one. Rising star Jack O’ Connell gives Eric an edgy, unpredictable energy that carries much of the story, and his plight is framed by two opposing forces: his father and his therapist. Australian veteran actor Ben Mendelsohn creates an explosive picture

of a man twisted by the system and unable to prove himself as a father. Mendelsohn, who gave a terrifying performance in the multi-award-winning “Animal Kingdom”, shows great sensitivity beneath the violent façade. At the other extreme is Eric’s therapist, portrayed by Rupert Friend, a character who might just crack, and who may have a secret history of violence. In a way that reflects the protagonist's own experience, we the audience don’t know who to trust – father, therapist, or neither. In an attempt to capture the tension and raw immediacy of the story, Mackenzie shot the film in sequence and edited with a two-editor crew – including long term collaborator Jake Roberts – to get results almost immediately after they were shot. This energy is amplified by Mackenzie’s careful preparation with the cast who were

given the freedom to explore the material and inhabit their characters, producing performances that are alive and unpredictable. With “Starred Up”, we see a filmmaker achieving maturity, paradoxically through his embrace of greater simplicity. We also see the emergence of a new energetic and important talent with O’Connell creating what may be his signature role in years to come. “I think he’s a really fine, important actor with an incredible future ahead of him,” says director David Mackenzie about his lead, Jack O’Connell. O’Connell plays the ultra-violent Eric with an extraordinary physical presence – “when Eric’s cell door opens,” says one fellow cast member, “there aren’t too many words...there aren’t too many needed.” O’Connell has a great deal of empathy for the kind of character he plays: “Is he a brat, a little shit, or is he older than his years? I decided to go with the latter and I modelled it on blokes I used to know at school. I wanted to make an adult of him at 19. He’s had to grow up fast. Because of his upbringing, his mum being a prostitute and all, he’s missed out on being a kid...He’s got a brain as well. If someone’s physically handy and intelligent then he’s twice as dangerous.” Eric embarks on a difficult journey of selfdiscovery and for O’Connell the film was a learning experience, one facilitated by his trust in the director: “You can’t work on a film like this if you’ve got any ego baggage,” says O’Connell. “That’s what’s wonderful about working with David. There’s nothing precious about him at all. It’s like it’s everybody’s film and not just his film.” Trust was not just a theme in the film but a strong component of filming. With the actors pushing themselves

physically to the edge, a special kind of trust evolved in acting out the scenes of extreme violence: “It’s vital. You need to be able to put yourself into those situations completely to be convincing, but you need to know there are limits. I still managed to bust my hand one day! I think it shows how far you have to take a film like this if it’s going to look real.” O’Connell has played gritty parts before in films where violence and retribution were key themes, but “Starred Up” offered different challenges: “I’ve always liked prison movies, but not just any prison movies. They need to get the morality right to interest me, and this one had a great big question right in the middle of it. You had to think: is this guy – and this guy is me – going to make it? Is he going to come through? What’s he going to come through as?” To embed his role even further in a credible reality, O’Connell took risks: “I decided not to read the ending and know what was going to happen to me, I’m learning the lines the night before… it means I was reacting to things just as they were happening, thinking on my feet… I don’t even know the ending, which means I can’t give anything away. I think it gives a lot more depth.” As a result, O’Connell’s performance has a knife-edge focus on ‘the now’: "It was really exciting for me as an actor to try to unravel the head space he’s in.” O'Connell felt the importance of having a tight team spirit among the cast: “I don’t say this lightly, but hands down this is one of the strongest casts I’ve ever been with. The raw talent and intelligence and good decision-making – I really think it’s a formula that’s few and far between. I’m really grateful to David for that. As a result, I think we’ve been able to achieve my proudest work to date.” O’Connell holds Mackenzie in high regard: “I was in awe of him, from the beginning.”

CORE FILM

The Lego Movie > By Rachel Salveta From Phil Lord and Christopher Miller comes 'The Lego Movie' which may sound like something made for the under 10s, however, don't put be fooled because behind the title is a film of originality, wit and colourful characters that may even please the adults more than the kids. This 3D computer animated story follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), an ordinary Lego figure who goes about each day according to the rules. His life is as average as it comes, however, when he is mistaken for the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world, things turn upside down for him. As he is whisked away from his daily routine and taken into a fellowship of strangers on a quest to stop an evil tyrant, Emmet is relied upon to be the hero, an hilarious concept with even more hilarious consequences. This loveable Lego character will have you rooting for him as he tries to convince his followers that he is

up to the task. This movie has something for everyone, the kids will be drawn into the colourful world of Lego as the good guys and bad guys fight it out, and for everyone else there is sheer lighthearted fun that provides the perfect break between some of the more serious and thought provoking Oscar movies around at the moment. With a script filled with humour and a superb voice cast including Morgan Freeman and Will Ferell to deliver it, these much loved Lego figures are brought to life like never before and will keep you laughing throughout. If you are lucky enough to have been dragged along to see this by a kid then you are in for a treat. Whatever age you are, 'The Lego Movie' is definitely worth watching.

P

retty needn’t mean soft and delicate. Take inspiration from the latest trend of doing pretty on your own terms.

When you think of power dressing you inevitably conjure up images of the shoulder padded suits of the 1980s or Joan Collins and Linda Evans doing battle in the grounds of the Dynasty set. Power pretty is different; it’s taking this year’s clothing trends for pastels, florals and delicate fabrics and, rather than pairing these soft hues with even softer makeup, it’s opting to inject some drama into the face and hair. Here’s our take on a classic power pretty look for Spring/Summer 2014. Most will agree that the days of strong lips and eyes combined have long gone as it’s hard to pull off and can look too theatrical in day-to-day life. By focusing on a statement eye or immaculately applied lip and keeping the other features more muted in comparison, it is by no means subtle but ensures that you keep the main focus of the look. Instead of using light eyeshadows to match your spring colours, power pretty means taking it darker. Choose a deeper version of what you would normally opt for and don’t be afraid to really define the eye and line both around the lashes and inside the water line for maximum impact. The key is

to buff and blend out with a clean blending brush (a classic being a MAC 217). Mascara is a must but a key mistake often made is to layer it on until the lashes become caked and clogged. To keep it power pretty you should opt for a high performance product such as Lancome Hypnose mascara which only requires a light application to volumise and lengthen to full effect. Don’t be afraid to wear a false lash either, just don’t make it too thick and heavy. Instead opt for a defining yet natural lash such as Eyelure Natural Volume 020. Brows must be defined or you’ll lose impact but, again, blending is key to avoid the dreaded block brows! We’ve used brights on the cheeks and lips which encapsulates the power pretty look of confidence in your colour choices. If you are focusing on the lips rather than eyes then take the eye colour a little lighter so that you can maximise the impact of the lips with precision lining, lipstick and gloss application. Your colour palette is limitless and it’s your choice if you’d rather go deep and dark, ultra glossy or with a strongly pigmented pastel such as Illamasqua Blueberry Violet Intense Lipgloss. Have fun with the power pretty look and use it to experiment with colour choices that you wouldn’t normally make. Spring/Summer is a great time to have a little fun with your style and simply adding to your makeup collection with some key colours will open up a whole new avenue of power pretty options to take you through the subsequent seasons.

CORE MUSIC

Shine On! > The Editor looks back in admiration at Oasis’ incredible debut album Definitely Maybe released 20 years ago... This album almost passed me by at the time. However it was the talk of the pub just like Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ - and the topic of many a muso conversation. “What’s it like?” I asked. “It’s a sort of cross between The Beatles and the Sex Pistols”. That statement in itself was enough to make me borrow a copy from a friend to see if the music matched the hype. Sure enough the McCartney mop-topped musical magpie that is Noel Gallagher had merged Beatles 7th chords and harmonies with the Panzerlike power of the Pistols. It was jaw droppingly inspiring. Amidst a cultish music scene of shoegazing and effete introspection, suddenly here was a band that proclaimed that they wanted to be the biggest in the world. But equally as important as the soul-stirring music was the beauty and attitude of front man Liam Gallagher. He took the Lydon drawl and vacant stage stare and welded it to his John Lennon fixation. He was modishly handsome and took Ian Brown’s Mancunian bragaddocio to another level. He seemed to embody Lydon’s proclamation in the Pistols single “We mean it maaaan!” so much so

that a recording of the sibling rivalry argument between Noel and Liam about attitude and music was recoreded and sold as a bootleg CD. 20 years on the album has lost none of it’s power. Although the band would go on to record further classics, they never ever matched the spirit of this incredible album. They were hungry for success and the euphoria of them being on the precipice of finally becoming Rock ‘n’ Roll stars oozes from every groove. It is fair to say that it leans more towards a punk aesthetic than a Mod one, the latter of which would be the template for most of the music that would follow. ‘Definitely Maybe’ was an album to play before going out on the town, it was about self confidence, attitude and even arrogance. Like the best Oasis tracks it was anthemic and thus appealed to football fans. Arguably, Oasis outstayed their welcome, but on this, their blisteringly incandescent debut, they shiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. •

Pasquetta Tutti al Gardino! Words & Recipe by Claudio Celino www.celinos.com

P

asqua (Easter Sunday) in Italy is celebrated in the customary way with friends and family round the table and plenty of food. When mammoth feast is over and friends and family have gone home, everyone goes to bed safe in the knowledge that tomorrow, Easter Monday, will involve more eating! Known as La Pasquetta (little Easter), Easter Monday in Italy is the encore to eating performance that was Pasqua.

or in some cases the beach, where it is customary to share your culinary creations with whoever you meet. I have fond memories of spending Easter in Italy. One of my most vivid memories is being in the countryside on La Pasquetta enjoying the leftovers, I would always hunt out some of my mum’s delicious frittata (see recipe on page 26), and watching in astonishment an open fire was lit, an iron stand was placed over the fire and on went a large pot containing few kilos of pasta!!

La Pasquetta is traditionally celebrated outdoors as the spring sun in Italy has real heat behind it and for most of us here in Scotland it would feel like a warm summer’s day. Italians pack up all the leftovers from Easter Sunday and head for the hills,

At Celino’s we are opening, for the first time, on Easter Monday. So if the Scottish weather rules out a picnic in the countryside or on the beach, why not come along and celebrate La Pasquetta with us.

Six simple steps to a stress-free life Financial advice with Tom Munro www.tommunro.co.uk Financial Planning is all about achieving goals in life, it’s not just about buying products like a pension plan or an ISA. For example it might involve putting appropriate wills in place to protect your family, thinking about how your dependants will manage without your income should you become ill or die prematurely, so giving rational thought about all of these things together should help you formulate a sound financial plan. You can implement a plan on your own, or if your needs are more complex you might want to engage a Financial Planner. Creating a sound financial plan usually comprises six steps as follows: 1. Establish your goals in life - short, medium and of course long term. 2. Work out what assets and liabilities you have - write them down and save somewhere. 3. Evaluate your current financial position how close are you to achieving your goals? 4. Develop your plan – create a “route map” for achieving your various goals. 5. Implement your plan – make the changes and make it happen. 6. Monitor and review your plan - at least yearly and make adjustments when needed

Start by working out your goals in life by Prioritising and think about the likely current expenditure required to meet those goals and when you will need the money. This will enable you to plan your finances to work out how to achieve future objectives. Don’t forget you also have to plan for some of the hurdles you may have to overcome too. It’s about being structured and taking control of your finances rather than letting your finances control you. By planning your finances to meet your goals you will gain much greater confidence of where you are going in life, reducing your stress levels and begin to enjoy life more. Attaining control and peace of mind through knowing whether you’re on track to achieve the future you want for you and your family, the first step is deciding to make these important goals a reality. See you next month.
