SPEED FREAK!

an exclusive interview with ryan reynolds

In the delightful 3D animated film, TUrBo, ryan reynolds stars as a snail with an extraordinary dream: he wants to be fast. Very fast. It’s a contradiction in terms but that doesn’t stop this tenacious creature from pursuing his ambition. Despite a series of obstacles along the way, (including opposition from his own brother, played by Paul giamatti) the turbo-charged mollusk enlists the help of an unusual crew of supporters who cheer him on. You recently starred in THe crooDs, how enjoyable was it working with DreamWorks, Jeffrey Katzenberg and his team at DreamWorks again on TUrBo? Jeffrey's the INDIANA JONES of showbiz. I have to admit that I'm ‘geeked out’ around him. The mechanics of what makes him an apex producer are worn on his sleeve. He is amazing. It's like he's training for the Olympics, if making hit movies were an accepted Olympics event. What is this so-called International Olympic Committee (IOC) afraid of? (laughs). What convinced you to play a snail?

Jeffrey shared the basic premise with me over dinner one night. He described it as a real underdog story. He mentioned the lead character and how he has an impossible dream: to win the Indy 500 (car race). It wasn't until the very end of his synopsis that he revealed the hero to be a garden snail. How could I not fall in love with that pitch? What was the appeal of playing Turbo - a snail who wants to be fast? The concept is funny in itself! I think that the film embodies the idea that anything is possible. Anyone who seeks to achieve something seemingly impossible is

usually wired differently from everyone else. That was an exciting dynamic to explore.” can you talk about little Turbo the snail and what kind of guy he is? He's not contented with his lot in life is he? Turbo is a guy who sees himself on the wrong side of destiny. Unfortunately he's a garden snail. And garden snails usually fail to register even the tiniest blip on the spectrum of greatness. Turbo is completely disillusioned with his lot in life and with the perception of his life as ‘ordinary’. He sees himself as a guy who is on the very cusp of true greatness. He views himself not just as the fastest snail on earth, but the fastest anything on earth.

overcome the statistics in this field, which were not very optimistic. I worked very hard to be ready for ‘dumb luck’!” How interesting is it watching an animated

ryan reynolds stars as a snail with an extraordinary dream: he wants to be fast. very fast!

Why do you think kids will enjoy the film and relate to Turbo? I think kids see the world as a vast expanse in which ANYTHING is possible. I think they typically relate to larger than life characters like Turbo because they themselves are larger than life. Kids haven't internalized the false message that they're limited in some way. The idea that a garden snail might beat an Indy car in a race isn't altogether far fetched to kids. It's possible. It's exciting. And it means they too are capable of shattering moulds in their lives, achieving their goals and realizing dreams.

That idea of realizing dreams is one of the cool themes in TUrBo. can you relate? Was it a childhood dream to act? Turbo is all about fulfilling your dreams and aspirations no matter how far fetched. As an actor, particularly a working actor, I realize I breathe pretty rare air. To be working and functioning in this business seemed like an impossibility to others when I was a kid and dreaming of acting. In many ways I had to

film like this make that journey from storyboards to the final movie that we see on screen? It's always shocking to see that evolution. It seems like it accelerates from whispers and shadows into a living, breathing, three-dimensional explosion in such a short period. The men and women who create these worlds have some kind of supernatural power. It's amazing. Why do we alWaYs root for the underdog like Turbo? I think everybody feels like an underdog to some degree. It's why DAVID AND GOLIATH is such a relatable story and such a great parable. Overcoming enormous obstacles in order to achieve a goal is what makes the achievement mean something. It's the key ingredient. For more info visit the website: www.turbothemoviemovie.com

FILM REVIEW RUSH > By Rachel Salveta From two time Academy Award winner Ron Howard comes 'Rush', the true story of the rivalry between two top Formula One drivers. In 1976 James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) were at the top of their game. However, whilst they both had a steely determination to win, they couldn't be more different. Hunt was a laidback playboy that was just as likely to be seen chasing the ladies as he was on the race track, while Lauda was a straight laced and completely driven man with a strong desire to eliminate his competition. It is these differing qualities that led to many clashes both on and off the course . This film depicts the year of their greatest rivalry when Hunt was set on taking down the world champion Lauda and we are taken through the season from its beginnings in Brazil to the finale in Japan.

the two feuding leads and each actor puts their own stamp on these real life competitors. 'Rush' is a sports drama that by far transcends its genre, making it easily watchable for those with little to no knowledge of the sport itself. Ultimately it is a character piece as we are taken on a journey with two people at the peak of their careers, while knowing that it could all be over in an instant. However, for the action fans there is no shortage of spectacular racing sequences that are guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Ron Howard captures the 70's era perfectly and proves his talent for great visuals and setting once again. Like the sport itself,' Rush' is a fast paced, suspenseful piece of film making that packs a real punch right up until the credits roll.

Both Hemsworth and Bruhl are excellent as

BOY-TOX MANY women use anti-wrinkle injections to eliminate the signs of aging… and now their male partners are getting in on the act. It’s not just for women anymore; Botulinum Toxin is also for men. It’s called “BoY-Tox” or “Bro-Tox”. With Kelly Mcchord.

or some people, hearing the word Botox® paints a picture of a plastic woman with a frozen face. Let us dispel some of these myths. The non-surgical aesthetic industry has noted a steady growth in the past two years and clinics have reported a 40% rise in the number of male clients seeking these skinsmoothing treatments. In addition, many of those men are opting to have the injections alongside their wives or girlfriends, booking their clinic appointments as twosomes. A man can proudly walk out of

his clinic after receiving Botox injections, virtually free of any noticeable marks or lumps that might require creative storytelling. Within a few days to two weeks, the wrinkles are usually gone. What is more, the type of men opting for these treatments tends not to be pampered and preened male-model types. Treatment can be tailored to suit each individual. For example, males often require more units of botulinum toxin due to higher muscle mass. When it comes to women, they focus more on eliminating crow’s-feet and

For men, it’s the angry 11's between the eyebrows that make them look angry, tired or confused. Men will accept some lines, but they loathe the deep furrows. Botulinum toxin only works on dynamic muscles, where the repetitive motion of facial expression causes the creases. For instance, it will not be effective in deep, static lines on the skin. That is why it is best to start treatment before these lines become permanent. The older you get, the more you’re doing it just to treat those wrinkles, the younger you are, and the more you’re doing to prevent them from occurring. As well as being licensed for softening

FESTA Words > Claudio Celino

here is the time going? My boys are growing up (Rocco is 5, Giancarlo is almost 3 and Gennaro is 7 months), my barber Karl, who is also my cousin, said I suit my ‘silver fox’ hair cut short (in other words I am thinning on top), it’s nearly Christmas (again) and, to top it all off, I’m going to be 40 in December! At Celino’s, we are in the midst of Christmas preparations, the stock has been ordered and has started to arrive, the Christmas Hampers are in production and the Christmas menus are out. Not satisfied with this, Celino’s is undergoing a makeover for Christmas with refurbishment work planned for the beginning of November – you won’t recognise us! I’m on overdrive, going all out to prove that I’ve still got the energy of a 20 year old (mid-life crisis?).

The wife has been asking me for months what I want to do for my 40th and I have finally decided on a house party. Following a few bad experiences of house parties (otherwise known as empties) in my younger years, I’m not their biggest fan. However, my decision is based on the following: 1. Given that my friends and family are now more mature in years, I should not experience many of the problems that I encountered in my younger days (am I being a bit naïve?) 2. More importantly, I have booked Celino’s Moretti font for the night (perk of the job) as there is nothing better than pulling a nice cold pint of Moretti in your living room. 3. Most importantly, I will have control over the food and drink. Other people might see this as a hassle but, for me, this is the ‘make or break’ of a good party.

For those of you planning your own parties over the festive period here is a wee sneaky peak at my party food (canapés only as the whole menu would run to pages): • arancini (see recipe below) – Homemade Sicilian rice balls with garlic, basil, tomato, garden peas and mozzarella, coated in breadcrumbs and served with a spicy chilli dip. • Polenta e salsiccia – Crispy pieces of polenta topped with chargrilled Italian sausage, drizzled with a red wine jus. • Mini calzone – Mini pizza base folded over and stuffed with either Italian sausage, cooked ham or seasonal vegetables mixed with Celino’s pizza sauce and mozzarella. • caprese skewers – Olive buffalo mozzarella, cherry vine tomatoes and fresh basil leaves, on a skewer, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with a touch of salt. • cerignola Puglian olives All washed down with Cellino’s, with a touch of peach juice for those that like it sweet. Cellino’s extra dry sparkling white wine is not our own product but we highly recommend it. Cellino’s Sparkling White, Vinchio-Vaglio Serra12% bottle Born from Cortese grapes only, from the classic area of Alto Monferrato. This sparkling wine is fresh, delicate and light. It has softness and balance that makes it ideal as an aperitif or it can accompany light appetizers and delicate dishes of fish and white meat. arancInI recIPe Ingredients 500g risotto rice 800ml of chicken/beef stock 1 tbsp butter 1 egg 3/4 cup finely grated parmesan 4 cups of peas, frozen or fresh 1 clove of garlic, crushed 1 cup of passata

Fresh basil, 6 leaves (chopped) 1 tbsp olive oil 10 small cups of grated mozzarella Salt and pepper For the coating 2 beaten eggs, seasoned with salt and pepper 300g dried breadcrumbs Oil for deep frying Method • Melt the butter in a large pan, add the rice and fry it gently for a few minutes. • Add a ladleful of stock, stirring it into the rice, until most of the stock has been absorbed then add the next ladleful and repeat the process until the rice is cooked and creamy • Let the mixture cool down to room temperature then add the beaten egg, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, passata, garlic, basil, olive oil, peas and a little salt and pepper, mixing well with your hands. Put it in the fridge and let it get really cold (at least 1 hour). • Fill a bowl with tepid water. As you form the arancini balls, dipping your hands in tepid water will stop the mixture sticking to your hands. Each ball should be slightly bigger than a golf ball. Once formed put the arancini balls in the fridge for 10 minutes. • Place some flour in a dish to coat the arancini before dipping them into the egg wash and then the breadcrumbs. Once each ball is coated repeat this step so that they have been double coated. • Heat a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and vegetable oil in a deep frying pan and place a few arancini in the hot oil. Cook until golden brown. Remember to turn often to ensure an even golden colour. • Serve with spicy tomato dip. www.celinos.com

CORE Money

STAND OUT FROM THE HERD… As we are all well aware, savings rates play a crucial impact on all of our finances as well as the economy. But when will they rise? In 2013, rates have simply dropped off a cliff as the governments £80 billion Funding for Lending scheme plays havoc with the savings market hitting instant-access, fixed-rate and cash Isa accounts hard. Interest on savings is closely aligned with the Bank of England's base rate. This rate hit an all-time low of 0.5 per cent in March 2009 remaining there ever since. Interest rates will stay at a 0.5 per cent until 2016, after the new Bank of England governor Mark Carney said he would not raise them until UK unemployment falls below seven per cent. So unfortunately it looks like there will be at least another three years of paltry returns struggling to maintain the spending power of savers' money. Low returns wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for inflation. Last autumn, the consumer prices index hit 5.2 per cent. The good news is this figure has come down and now stands at 2.7 per cent (August 2013 figure). However, this fall eases the pressure on the Bank of England to hike the base rate up from 0.5 per cent and until that happens, savers' cash will struggle to grow in real terms.

So what can be done to avoid the risk of your money devaluating in real terms? And how can you provide a reasonable level of sustainable income over the long-term? Firstly, a sensible starting point is ‘risk profiling’ where your appetite for risk is carefully considered based on the level of investment, the time period, level of income required and so on, you can, with the help of your adviser, construct a portfolio of low-risk asset classes. With regular monitoring and rebalancing to reflect economic and market conditions, you can, as many investors have experienced over the past ten years or so, sustain reasonable levels of income whilst preserving capital simultaneously. By implementing a carefully thought out investment strategy, based on expected returns to support your lifestyle, long-term results can be achieved, so rather than except the derisory returns on offer, at least explore the alternatives with your adviser, after all it will cost nothing to have an initial discussion.
