Hello
and welcome...
‌.to the March edition of Love Saltash
This month we are all about journeys: personal journeys towards a better state of mind and body, and literal journeys as we encourage you to venture out and try some of the amazing experiences Saltash has to offer, both now and in the months to come. We feature the hidden gem of Coombe Woods and urge you to pay it a visit to see how community action can transform previously derelict space.
And we offer a taster of an exciting new festival on Fore Street, commemorating VE day and happening the weekend immediately after the hugely popular May Fair. Please do get enthused, Saltash hopes to have a Street Party and shared lunch to rival the very best in years gone by. Love Saltash is also going on a bit of a journey of its own and we would really welcome your thoughts and opinions to help direct our path.
There is an opportunity to fill out a survey and post it off to us in the centre pages of this month’s magazine. As ever, we would love to hear from you. The survey can be filled in online as well, or you can visit us on Facebook or email karen@cornerstonevision.com with any thoughts and suggestions.
xx Karen

Personal Will Writing You need a will!
• Professional will writing service in the comfort of your own home.
• Couples can protect their home from residential care fees. • Lasting power of attorney. • Living Wills. Anita is a member of the Society of Will Writers Prices are reasonable (no VAT).
You don’t have to write a Will in the UK, but if you don’t, the UK government can decide who inherits your assets. Having a correctly authored and witnessed Will ensures your estate is distributed as you wish. It can also: • reduce the burden of Inheritence Tax • provide significant protection for your home from long term care costs, and • ensure that suitable guardianship arrangements are made for your dependents and pets. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) LPA’s are important if
you become mentally incapacitated. If this situation arose, you would need someone to help you make decisions regarding your welfare and financial and property matters. LPA’s enable you to nominate a person, or persons who you trust to handle your affairs if you are unable to do so. This is relevant to you now! I am a professional local will writer who will visit your home to discuss your requirements. Anita Hutt LL.B (Hons) MSWW 01579 344433 07971 280 510

Road traffic is the principle source of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution in Cornwall and across the UK. Approximately 4.3 million tourists visit Cornwall each year, the majority travelling by car. In peak tourist season traffic flows rise by around 25 percent. But Cornwall is already well ahead of other areas in offering charging points for electric vehicles - 115 electric vehicle charge points are in place and Cornwall Council is working with partners to install at least another 66 over the next 3 years. As part of the council’s commitment to moving towards becoming carbon neutral it is developing a green travel plan for staff commuting and business travel, encouraging video conferencing and skype meetings wherever practical. It is also investing in an ultra-low emission council vehicle fleet, and introducing 37 new low- emission buses to improve bus services. Cornwall is the only part of the UK to have increased bus usage in recent years. A radical shared pavement/road scheme in Bodmin has seen traffic speeds drop and pollution levels decrease. The Cornwall Clean Air Strategy is a vital part of both the Local Plan and Health and Wellbeing Strategy, both of which aim to reduce risks to health and advance the wellbeing of people in Cornwall. You can take part in the survey and view the Clean Air for Cornwall strategy online by visiting cornwall.gov. uk and searching for “clean air survey” from the home page. Help with completion of online surveys can also be sought at Saltash Library Hub.

Course at Cornwall College Saltash have once again visited Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) after learning about the charity as part of their course. CHSW has been caring for children with lifethreatening conditions for more than 25 years, by providing children’s hospice and professional family support services. It is an incredible local charity very much in the heart of those of us who live here. As usual the visit made a deep impression on the students. Joanne Hearn, said it was “wonderful to experience the compassionate environment the charity provides for families and has made me more determined to do well on my Access to Nursing course and University. I would really like to care for children and their families in this environment.” Fellow Access to Nursing student, Lucy Down, agreed the visit was “incredibly insightful”. “As I plan to go into children’s nursing, this visit gave me a clear insight into the facilities and I came away feeling very positive about the whole environment,” she added. The students’ lecturer, Norma Massey, who organised the visit said , “I always enjoy taking the Nursing students there, and it makes them really understand the power of empathy, compassion and care.” From September Access to Higher Education courses will be offered at Duchy College Stoke Climsland. There is a Course & Careers Advice Event on Saturday 21 March 10am until Midday for potential students to look around the facilities and meet the lecturers.

BUSINESS
AS USUAL ON THE WATERSIDE Storm Dennis has certainly made its mark on the country with high winds, heavy rain and amber weather warnings pretty much everywhere across the British Isles. This, undoubtedly causes concern, not only as we try and dodge the ridiculous periods of bad weather to get out and about as usual, but also, as we reflect on the Climate Change Crisis, if periods like this are going to get worse. However, despite our growing concern, businesses on Saltash Waterside want to make it clear that the recent flooding they have experienced is TIDAL in nature, meaning that the Tamar is not in any danger of creating the damage that we see on the news from inland waterways for some time yet. Peter Castell from Just Be explained, “Tidal flooding comes and goes with high tides and is completely predictable. It is, of course, affected by things like Onshore Winds, Low Pressure, Spring Tides and Heavy Rains, but we have a very good system to
8
prevent damage in waterside areas such as ours. “If the high tide is expected to be an issue, we receive a text from the Environment Agency which prompts us to get our Flood Boards out. The danger period is pretty shortlived, just 15 minutes before and 20 minutes after high tide. “Despite the very bad weather recently, our flood boards have worked as they are supposed to and Just Be remains as dry and warm as ever. We have not had any need to close our doors to the public, and for us, and all the other businesses down here on Saltash Waterside, it remains business as usual.” One of the good things over living near the coast and the mighty River Tamar, is that local people have been well equipped for generations to deal with the worst the weather can throw at them. Recently a 70 year old lady commented to Love Saltash that 50 mile per hour winds were par for the course for local people, although not so much fun for inlanders with little experience of coastal storms. So congratulations for being such a hardy bunch down here, weathering the storms better than many. However, do spare a thought for how changing weather patterns affect us all. Just Be’s owners, Peter and Tina put into practice their own convictions about being more environmentally responsible, and all of us can do our bit to work towards a more sustainable future. Even if that is a simple as not littering to prevent storm drains becoming clogged with rubbish.

I have so much more energy, and my world view is consistently positive! Love It!! “The Slimming plan allows you to gain greater understanding of what type of food you are choosing to eat – nothing is not allowed – but that makes it easier to make healthier choices. A typical day would be fat free yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, poached eggs, mushrooms and onions on spinach for lunch, followed by smoked haddock and a selection of veg for dinner. “I cannot recommend both Slimming World and especially Kelly’s group enough – I know it sounds trite, but for me it has been truly life changing.” Kelly Andrew’s group meets on Tuesday’s at Saltash Social Club and has sessions starting at 9.30am, 11.30, 5.30 and 7.30pm. also loved Scottish dancing. She left school at 14 and as there were many local shops and businesses in which to work, she quickly became
Winifred was born on February 3 1920, in Strood in Kent, the eldest sibling of a large and happy family. She was born prematurely, weighing only 2.5 pounds at birth, and had to have specialised care for quite some time. She was so tiny, that she was carried around on a pillow, to keep her tiny frame from damage. She played in Dickensian cobbled streets with gas street lighting, - skipping, hopscotch, two balls, whipping -top and hoopla. There were very few cars; horses pulled carts, and houses were mostly heated by coal and coke. Win’s household did not benefit from central heating or double glazing; and milk was delivered by bottle, or pails with ladles. The milk was not sterilised, so her mother had to slowly scald it to the right temperature and would skim the cream off the top, a tasty treat with bread, jam or treacle. Pantries, not fridges kept food cool in the summer. There was no television, mobile phones or washing machines. Win’s mother did their washing by hand, or for whites used boilers and hand rinsed with blue and put through the mangle. It was a bonus when the weather was kind, as there were no tumble dryers. Win remembers the fresh smell of the washing as it blew in the breeze, looking as white as snow with a slightly blue haze. Win remembered vividly her freedom to play outdoors and wonders if children nowadays are missing out. She recalled her school days in Kent, with fondness, especially Miss Nicholls to whom she presented her award winning plastercine elephant. She recalls however, that severe child illnesses were more common in those days, with TB, rickets and scurvy in many homes.
independent. The family had a gramophone that played big records, and she could well remember the voices of Paul Robeson, Nat King Cole and Mario Lanza in particular. Winifred’s grandparents had a piano, as they were quite well off! Her grandfather used to play at family Saturday sing-songs, often Marches as he had been in the Army in the Great War, serving as a gunner, riding the horses that pulled the big guns. He had suffered from poisonous gas. Win enjoyed going to the pictures and admits to having a bit of a soft spot for Ray Milland! She said with a twinkle in her eye: “He was lovely”! In the War Winifred ‘did her bit’ for the country working in a munitions factory. She remembered the German Doodle Bugs (V1 and V2) and how they held their breath for fear of becoming one of the many casualties. She quite clearly recollected the joy of the King’s and Churchill’s end of war speeches on the radio and the celebrations that followed. Win met her future husband Alfred when he was serving in the Merchant Navy on ammunition ships. It was, she said: “Love at first sight”. They had a whirlwind romance of ten months, and married when Win was 22 years old. Win told me it was a wonderful marriage, and the best thing that ever happened to her, except for their son Barry, who is now her full time carer. Alfred qualified as a Master Mariner and Admiralty River Pilot. He arranged special trips in the 1950’s when he was Shipping Master, in Milford Haven, for the family to journey around the Royal Yacht. Alfred moved his family around ports, eventually settling

Local civic events including at Buckingham Palace, meeting members of the Royal family.
In later years Win’s interests encompassed yoga, flower arranging, gardening, cooking (she always cooked roast dinner on a Sunday!) and growing vegetables, knitting and reading, particularly Catherine Cookson books. She still knits for charity. I asked Win what was her recipe for such a long life, and she replied most enthusiastically, and without a pause: ……”A happy marriage with Alfred, good healthy living and faith”. She attended St Stephen’s Church for many years and reads her bible every day. She also paid tribute to her son Barry and although Win has enjoyed cooking all her married life, she now appreciates and enjoys Barry’s cooking!? (I think so anyway!). The list of visitors she entertained on her birthday is long, including Mayor of Saltash, Chair of Cornwall Council, East Cornwall MP, former Mayors, Freemen and Magistrates – and a testament to the esteem Win is held in by those that know her.

veterans complete tor of duty with trainee sailors
Veterans are helping Britain’s next generation of sailors through their training on the wilds of
Dartmoor – shedding the traditional image of former military personnel. Trainees as young as 16 spend a couple of days on the moor hiking, learning to navigate, work as a team, and survival in an austere environment. With them all the way are instructors from the Torpoint establishment – plus a handful of Royal Naval Association (RNA) members, former sailors who want to help ensure the 21st-Century generation make the grade. Education
Never been to University? Never let that stop you!
Article by Jeanne Milton from U3A
Saltash U3A is now 12 years old but there are still many people in Plymouth and Saltash who don’t know what it is. U3A stands for University of the Third Age, so you might have a flash back to the 1960’s psychedelic song “The Age of Aquarius”, or perhaps you are thinking more Stone Age than Digital Age? More sensible folk think that it is a high brow academic group, only suitable for retired professors and brain surgeons; and it is for this reason that The Third Age Trust have decided to drop the word ‘University’ from the title. As yet they haven’t decided what to replace it with – unity; unifying; united?? Whatever they decide will not change Saltash U3A from being what it is – a very friendly group of over 300 members with more than 30 different groups. It’s not possible to give an outline of all the groups but they are

very diverse. To give you some idea you could visit the website: saltash u3a.org.uk Local coordinator, Jeanne Milton explained, “Every year in March we have a ‘Showcase’ at Saltash Wesley Church on our usual second Thursday of the month as we have so many differing groups based around what our members are interested in. This year The Showcase will be on March 12 from 2-4pm. Many of our members will be there with displays of what is involved with their group. Leaders and members of the group will be present and will be happy to explain what they do. Refreshments will be available.” So if you are not sure what we offer do put a note in your diary. Come along and talk to people who are already members. They will not only tell you about the groups but also about the monthly meetings and the interesting speakers that deliver fascinating talks.

GENERATION CAFE EXHIBITION at Ashtorre Rock 20 March - 30 April
Right under the Brunel Bridge at Saltash Waterside, PL12 4GT and open 10-4 daily.
art at ashtorre Comment by John Forster
Instead of commenting on other artists’ exhibitions, it’s my turn to put my own work in the spotlight. Those who know my paintings will associate me with robust, abstract canvases, where the colours, shapes and rhythms speak for themselves, in compositions without any subject or ‘outside’ references. But I wanted to try something completely different. Art with a message, making a point, complaining, perhaps? Worth a try. Satire - in any of the arts - entertains but has long played a vital social role: to tell the awkward truth. We can laugh, nod in agreement and then do something about it. Or not.

ACTION Recent waves of protest, at home and across the world, have seen large numbers voicing their objections to oppressive political and social conditions, calling out arrogance, ignorance and injustice. Young people have started to take a lead, where they see others falling short. In my new pictures – created digitally – ordinary people of all ages stand proud to campaign against current, uncomfortable scenarios that need to challenged. Quirky cartoons point their fingers in turn at the legacy we are leaving our children and at social media pressure, religion, nationalism, hate crime, environmental destruction and the dumbing down of the arts themselves.
