Keglen Design by BIG Ideas February 2020

Story behind The collaboration between Louis Poulsen and BIG Ideas started with the development of a pendant for the Tirpitz Museum in Blåvand, a building BIG had designed for the Varde Museums. The Tirpitz Museum opened in 2017, and the edgy, galvanised finish of the pendant encapsulates the at once fine and robust architecture of the museum that melts into the dune landscape of West Jutland. The artistic and technical lighting collaboration between Louis Poulsen and BIG Ideas continued and has now resulted in the further development of the Tirpitz Pendant which works beautifully in any kind of interior.

In the design of Keglen, the aim was to create a systematic design language that would provide the opportunity for a wide range of lighting typologies. In other words, Bjarke Ingels, Jakob Lange and the design team from BIG Ideas wanted to create a family of lamps with the same qualities and design details in various sizes, but each with their own unique personality. “The geometric and metallic shades have a soft, organic opal insert that resembles a drop of water”, emphasise Jakob Lange and Bjarke Ingels. The architects strive to give others the tools to enhance their built environments. This is especially true of Keglen. They see the largest pendant working perfectly in different types of restaurant and meeting scenarios whereas the smallest pendant provides a more intimate light – either on its own or in particular formations.

BIG Ideas, BIG’s technology-driven specialist product division, is managed by architect Jakob Lange and produces the practice’s lamps and other types of digital projects that underpin BIG’s designs, buildings and ideas. BIG Ideas was set up to gain increased influence on the built environment. Bjarke Ingels Group was founded in 2005 by architect Bjarke Ingels who continues to define architecture as the art and science of ensuring that our cities and built environments suit the way in which we want to live our lives. What drives Bjarke Ingels is the idea of information-controlled design on the basis of thorough project analysis of applicable parameters in an ever-changing society. BIG is a globally renowned architectural practice that has designed and completed award-winning buildings all over the world.

Concept The pendants distinctive conical shades each have a curved built-in diffusor made of injection moulded PC. This ensures a both attractive and glare-free downward light. Each version of the shade provides its own diffusion of light while the white inner side ensures that its light is reflected flawlessly. A gentle light is also emitted upwards through a uniform, discreet opening in the top of the shades which adds to the perfect ambiance.

AJ Royal & AJ Design by Arne Jacobsen Spring 2020

Story behind Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. Today, the AJ family is regarded as the design that the Danish architect is best known for all over the world. At that time, the AJ family comprised a table and a floor lamp as well as a wall lamp, a small table lamp and a table lamp that was designed to attach to the table. The wall lamp could be found in beautiful rows in stainless steel in the lobby when the hotel was opened in 1960. In combination with the pendant AJ Royal, the AJ Lamp formed part of the overall design concept that Jacobsen created for the hotel. Arne Jacobsen did not just design the hotel down to the smallest detail for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), he also designed almost all the hotel’s original furniture and utility items. The profile of the AJ Lamp with its straight lines and its combination of oblique and right angles is not only seen as a formal parallel to the profile of the Series 3300 seats, but also to the geometric profiles of his buildings. The AJ Lamp was used in several parts of the hotel, in copper and stainless steel. Furthermore, it was originally available in light grey, dark brown and black like the AJ Pendant. New colours have since been introduced over the years in celebration of the series’ jubilees. In 2020, the 60th anniversary of the opening of the SAS Royal Hotel will be celebrated with the reintroduction of the AJ Table Mini which looks particularly at home on a window sill, on a bedside table or in combination with other occasional furniture. All the AJ Lamp versions will be reintroduced in the original stainless steel version, which reflects its surroundings in the spirit of Arne Jacobsen and emphasises the lamp’s minimalist and distinctive shape and flawless emission of light.

Arne Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen. In 1927, he graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he obtained his first job at the office of the City Architect of Copenhagen launching his own office only two years later. Arne Jacobsen is a world famous Danish modernistic architect. His buildings are numerous in Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Among his more famous projects are the National Bank in Copenhagen (1971), SAS Royal Hotel & Terminal, Copenhagen (1960), and St. Catherine’s College in Oxford, UK (1963). It is said that his fear of flying inhibited him from making a full impact on the American Architectural environment.

As an architect, Arne Jacobsen had very strong decision making skills, making it possible for him to influence not only the design of the building itself, but the majority of the details. Over the years, he ventured into various fields related to his work, such as light fixtures, furniture, cutlery, door handles, sanitary fixtures, fabrics, and wallpaper patterns. "The Egg" and "The Swan" are two famous chairs designed by Jacobsen. During Arne Jacobsen’s lifetime, he received several prestigious awards both at home and abroad. He became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy for 11 years and through that he influenced an entire generation of Danish Architects. Each eventually developed their own architectural language, built upon the same rationalistic and minimalist approach toward architecture.

Panthella Portable Design by Verner Panton February 2020

Design by Verner Panton

February 2020

Story behind The Panthella Portable lamp is the smallest edition of Verner Panton’s popular Panthella Table lamp from 1971. Panton intended to create a light in which both the base and the shade served as a reflector and use the organic shapes that he is known for. With its glare-free light, the Panthella Portable serves as a beautiful example of Verner Panton’s brilliant sense of atmospheric illumination. This iconic design, which measures 160 mm in diameter, is a true-toscale version of the original Panthella Table lamp and can be used anywhere as it does not depend on a power supply.

The handy Panthella Portable comes in the classic opal acrylic and the portable makes enjoying both the design and quality of its light easier as the lamp is charged in advance either wirelessly or by USB. This means that it is convenient to move around to create an attractive and exclusive atmosphere on the patio, in the al fresco restaurant or elsewhere where access to a power point is not available. The Panthella Portable lamp comes with a USB-C cable and has three dimming options.

Verner Panton Verner Panton (1926-1998) is famous for his inspirational and colorful personality. A unique person with a special sense for color, shape, light function and space. Over the course of his career, Panton introduced a series of . modern lamps with personalities unlike any of his Scandinavian contemporaries. With remarkable faith in the unlimited possibilities of form, he worked successfully to create a new set of theories about light function and influence. 'The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most people spend their lives living in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colors. By experimenting with lighting, colors, textiles and furniture and utilizing the latest technologies, I try to show new ways, to encourage people to use their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting'. - Verner Panton Verner had a very clear attitude regarding his work and regarding shape, color and function. At the same time, he made conscious and brave use of different materials. His use of different materials often led to his contemporaries disparaging the 'timelessness' of his design. The great interest in his design today proves the opposite.

PH Artichoke Design by Poul Henningsen February 2020

Story behind In 1958, Poul Henningsen designed the PH Artichoke for the Langelinie Pavilion, a modernist Copenhagen restaurant, in which the PH Artichoke continues to enchant guests to this day, where the pendant is regarded as an international design icon. The distinctive shape and design of the pendant ensures a completely glare-free light no matter from which angle it is viewed. This is due to the 72 carefully placed leaves that have also inspired the name of the pendant. Today, the PH Artichoke is still partly assembled by hand to ensure high quality. And yes it is true that it takes up a lot of space. However, the quality of light and the sheer elegance is truly unparalleled. The famous luminaire is still available in its original cobber finish. Over time, versions in brushed and polished steel, brass and white metal have been added, and these continue to emphasise the versatility and timeless silhouette of the pendant.

The PH Artichoke Black is introduced in 2020. With a perfect matt black finish, this version consolidates a bold look for those wanting an edgier interior without compromising on either design or quality of light.

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen by the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 191417. He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but .over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine “NYT”. The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical). Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction— compared to man’s need for light remains the fondation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen.
