Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events Thank you to the Gallery of Caribbean Art and The Art Hub who have teamed up to pay for an upgrade for this magazine through 2017. This means The Visual Arts Barbados Magazine may now be viewed with no ads and downloaded. This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

Makemba Kunle, an intriguing, accomplished postcolonial modernist artist of Trinidad and Tobago. Makemba is Artist- In- Residence and Creative Director of Studio 66 Art Support Community in Barataria, Trinidad. This new thought provoking exhibition will include Makemba's major works, together with his uses of Acrylic and Oil on canvas, and paper, and innovations with masking, patterning, and double meaning. Makemba Kunle emerged as one of the most progressive visual artist in the Caribbean during the early 1970s. The consciousness movement at that time played a major part in influencing his progressive style of art. Born at Old St. Joseph Road in Laventille, Trinidad, on August 14th 1950, Kunle grew up in Barataria. A former St. Mary’s College Student, he was trained as a teacher at the Mausica Teachers Training College at Valsayn. Kunle always had the burning desire within his sould for expression of his creative talent of visual art. "Veteran artist Makemba Kunle “ has persevered for almost 50 years, not for this show, but for his own philosophy; his own belief. Perhaps he has read the words of Marcus Garvey, who believed it would be philosophy, African philosophy, not platonic philosophy that would save this perishing race of ours from the consequences of slavery and colonialism. Whatever drives him, the message is clear, we must too, be driven in all that we do,”

Review of “In Between Worlds” | A Solo Show by Makemba Kunle July 26, 2017 In Between Worlds by Makemba Kunle “In Between Worlds”, a solo show by Trinidadian artist Makemba Kunle held at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, proved to be an interesting show that gave me a new way to look at the world. A Sudden Decision I heard about the opening of “In Between Worlds” about three hours before it started. A friend said, “Do you want to go?” I said yes. I knew nothing about the artist or his work. However, once I finished going to the opening, and then the artist talk later, I knew quite a bit more. The Artist from Barataria Makemba Kunle hails from Barataria in Trinidad and Tobago. He is the Artist-in-Residence and Creative Director of the Studio 66 Art Support Community in Barataria, Trinidad. He has been painting for almost 50 years. In his artwork, Kunle constantly searches for an authentic voice. He acknowledges that this is “very, very difficult in societies that have been colonized.” Still, he absorbs all the influences passed on to him. “The colonization is also part of me…and I accept it. I’m someone who is just trying to be normal but always resisting the constructs that keeping hanging on that are passed to me. I know that I am mixed up. But in all of that, there is a voice that has to be authentic.” Work by Makemba Kunle There was a wide variety of work on display. Most of it was acrylic or oil on canvas, but there were some paintings of cloth, prints, and drawings available. However, all of it featured Kunle’s distinctive vision. Almost everything had intricate textured details over swirling layered backgrounds.

Makemba Kunle. “A Current in Time.” Acrylic. 21″ x 37.5

A Current in Time Looking at “A Current in Time”, I was strongly reminded of the famous Chi Rho page from the Book of Kells. Tiny geometrical details almost covered the canvas. But the swirling underlayer peeked through, giving the feeling that you were seeing something secret. At first, the whole image simply seemed pretty. After a minute, I realised it was people poling boats down a river. When I realised that, my perspective changed. To me, the image looked like a heat map, in a way. It showed the subject, but it did not show the everyday view. This looked like the scene might like if you were on a higher plane of existence and could see the way the universe was made. A little odd, but true.

Makemba Kunle. “Lara Promenade Revisited”. Acrylic on Canvas. 24″ x 32″.

Lara

Promenade

revisited.

I noticed this effect in “Lara Promenade Revisited.” When I first saw this piece, I thought it was a glowing painting of a church interior. It had the strong Gothic lines and the impression of vibrant souls walking through it. Then I looked at the title. The card politely informed me that the painting depicted the Brian Lara Promenade in Port-of-Spain. I imagine the promenade is lovely. However, I found it hard to believe it was quite so radiant. In a chat with the artist, I discovered that this was deliberate. “It can become a place where people can go and find succor, can go and find serenity, comfort, and so on… it’s what Trinidad could be. I like to do a lot of paintings with that kind of vision.” In some of these paintings, it all became too much. There were too many details to look at. Some did not have the same clear spaces as the others. And of course, they all did look very trippy. Sometimes it overwhelms. But if you stop to linger over each one individually, you find many things to admire.

The Drawings That was the paintings. But it was his drawings that really spoke to me. Each drawing featured bold, precise marks. Like his paintings, layers upon layers, marks upon marks, build up until there is a complete whole. Yet the drawings mostly have a sense of raw unhindered joy that that the paintings seem to lack. I particularly enjoyed “Flying”. The image seemed to show the shadow of a plane over the ground. Yet even within the shadow there seemed to be other images. I caught the glimpse of a face, the edges of buildings, the lines of trees. And over it all, the shadow of the airplane, soaring above it all. Makemba Kunle. “Flying”. Pencil on Paper. 8″ x 12″.

And in the Artist’s Words At the opening, I sat down with Makemba Kunle for a few minutes and got an impromptu interview. I really love the drawings. Do you mind telling me about them? Drawings are what I do…I always walk with a book to draw and I have several books full up. I believe in the drawing because the drawing brings out discipline. I like to draw with the pen because when you mark, it can’t erase, so you have to study how to use that mark to make the successful drawing. Not only that, but I’m able to extend my imagination in the drawing, because it’s free. I love drawing. Sometimes, from the drawings, I get ideas for the paintings. But in terms of when I say, when I do a painting, I has several ideas in it at the same time. What sorts of ideas? The topics are everyday topics. Like a calypsonian, I paint about what’s going on in the country, my love, my family, the environment around me, things that might be on the news. That’s a lot of ideas. Yeah. In terms of when I say, when I do a painting, it has several ideas in it at the same time. They might represent a lot of who I am today. I come out from the days of black power. I was involved in it, in the marches, in the speeches, in doing everything. There was a revolutionary period in the seventies, and I come out of that. And with that, the whole thing about anticolonialism, and finding an identity. Especially with me ancestors from Africa. But that also took me a little further. Because in the identification of meself, Africa is not enough. I’m a universal being. And even as a universal being, here, that is also not enough because I’m a cosmic being. We’re all part of a big cosmos. So these paintings, these come out. They’re grounded in where I am, where I live, in my own environment, everything starts there. But from there, you get all these different ideas.

Makemba Kunle. “Waves and Particles.” Acrylic on canvas.

That painting on the wall [gestures to “Waves and Particles”] life is encapsulated in that. It have carnival. People jumping up. If I turn it, you would see that it is people in procession moving in a band. Everyone in their own space. Everybody together, but everybody in their own space with their own colours and so on. Everybody just made up of atoms, molecules, one jumping from one to the next. And also, it’s planets in the air. It’s sperm moving toward the— what do they call it—ova. I try to describe unity there, and a moment. I could talk a lot about many things—no, because I done talk too much—but everything is there in each one. People would call it multi-layered. It is multi-layered, as we are all multi-layered.

Makemba Kunle talks about his piece, “Concerto in G”.

Verdict on “In Between Worlds” by Makemba Kunle “In Between Worlds” was an accurate title for this show. Looking at each of the paintings, I felt as though I got a glimpse into some kind of higher state of being. On the top, you could see the skeleton structure of the everyday world, shown by intricate detailing. But underneath, the vibrant underlayers suggested another layer to reality. In addition, it was wonderful to see this theme reflected and echoed and changed throughout the entire show. It’s definitely worth taking a trip up to Speightstown to view. — “In Between Worlds”, a solo show by Makemba Kunle, will be at the Gallery of Caribbean Art from 15 July to 10 August 2017. To find out more information, call the Gallery of Caribbean Art at +1 (246) 419-0858, email artgallerycaribbean@caribsurf.com, or visit the Gallery of Caribbean Art website or Facebook page. Interview edited for clarity and length. Please note that this article was corrected on July 26, 2017 at 11:40 a.m. The piece “Waves and Particles” was incorrectly listed as “Cosmic Being”. The name has been updated.

This monument commemorates Rock Hall Village, St Thomas, Barbados, the first free village of ex-slaves who were from the nearby Mount Wilton Plantation. Rock hall Village was founded in 1841 just 5 years after Emancipation. The 3 ton 20ft stainless steel Statue which is cast in bronze was designed by Stanton Haynes a senior architect in the Ministry of Public Works; it depicts a family of three ex-slaves standing proudly overlooking the Rock Hall Village and was officially unveiled on August 5th 2005. Plans by government for a Heritage Village in this area with chattel house style shops and kiosks for the sale of art & craft and an amphitheatre were created but shamefully stand empty in this year 2017. There are two plaques, and one gives the names of free slaves and the second plaque says: “From the Belly of the Slave Ship to a Free Holder, the Spirits of the African Ancestors beckon the enslaved souls guiding them to the first Free Village. Standing tall in a sacred pool of water, the Bronze ancestral Spirits rise majestically across the ravine symbolizing that any mountain can be climbed, any turbulent ocean crossed and any shackled soul can be Free. It is generally believed that the seeds of mankind were sown in Africa. The Spirits therefore represent ALL Races. They are guiding ALL people to a place free from Mental and Physical Slavery, a Place free from Guilt and Shame.

Nyugen Smith’s Residency – Third Blog Post US-based interdisciplinary artist Nyugen Smith shares his third blog post about his recently completed residency at Fresh Milk. Nyugen reflects on part of his time in Barbados and the sensitivity of some of the issues he is attempting to unpack through his work, as he begins to navigate the history of the island in conjunction with the contemporary realities and nuances of its complex culture.

https://freshmilkbarbados.com/2017/07/11/nyugen-smiths-residency-third-blog-post/

To speak the name, Barbados is to spray the air with a mist of sea salt and the smell of greenfor bush and deep waters are never far. To speak its name is to swaddle the body with hospitality and rock it with musical vibrations of the region. To speak its name is to draw from its wells of intellectual tradition. But you cannot speak the name, Barbados without the bitter taste of black death soaked in the juice of Saccharum officinarum lingering on lips warmed by the Caribbean sun.

Nyugen Smith’s Residency at Fresh Milk – Final Blog Post July 13, 2017 US-based interdisciplinary artist Nyugen Smith shares his final blog post about his recently completed residency at Fresh Milk. Nyugen’s last post takes the form of poetic musings, looking at experiences he had in Barbados and how they informed his views and his work. Further images and texts expanding on some of his performance pieces – including an intervention held at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society in collaboration with Barbadian artist Llanor Alleyne and a live performance done at FRESH MILK XXI https://freshmilkbarbados.com/2017/07/13/nyugen-smiths-residency-final-blog-post/

Day 26 Everyday – Rising just after the sun after four maybe 5 hours of rest, my body follows mind into action as I ask the day for all that’s good. I am going home. -soon. it was about a month of open receptors toward the external and internal. what has happened in the twenty-eight days? what have I learned? what have I given shared created destroyed in the process? I remembered to rest to eat well to drink plenty water to carry water -each daythe sun showered bodies moving in the outdoors.

some sought shade in bush -in ways their DNA recalled. i’m still thinking about them side by sturdy-bodied side. body of man + body of woman quiet they sat on concrete curved holding the walk way. their faces leaned close to the broad leaves and more leaves rose above their heights and blocked light. they were cooled. ~as if by blue light~ they were cooled. just across the bridge they were a little distance from the fairchild bus depotwhere a steady stream of loading and unloading travelers jostled to the tune of signature horns and conductors who shouted down man woman child to the chorus of multiple destinations.

load ’em up load ’em up. the twin seats always had three and the ledge behind the passenger riding shotgun usually sat two. the conductor stood hunched over perspiring heads they inhaled (usually) him sometimes her ~(only once I saw)~ collecting crumpled cash handed over like the act was powered by contempt or ambivalence or coolness like the bills had little value no matter the color. though the rush of the journey in and out of town fueled my spirit and grounded the work made there and created sparks for more to come, i was ready to be home. ©Nyugen Smith 2017

PUNCH CREATIVE ARENA Punch Creative Arena is a curatorial initiative that aims to showcase and interrogate creative production with a multidisciplinary focus on local, regional and international art practices. The arts in Barbados and the region are too often considered dispensable rather than fundamental to the productive exchange of intellectual expression. Punch generates projects that focus on exhibitions, artistic production and research, in an effort to encourage art making and discourse while building community awareness and involvement. Punch was started in 2013 by Allison Thompson and Ewan Atkinson. We are both independent cultural practitioners and faculty members in the Division of Fine Arts at the Barbados Community College. Perceiving a lack of a supportive infrastructure for artistic practice in Barbados, we wanted to initiate and develop our own collaborative projects as producers. Within the parameters of the college, we wanted to address the gap between ideas generated in the classroom and the ‘real world’ . We have worked with exhibiting artists to provide critical feedback during production and the conceptualisation of the exhibition, we install and promote the exhibition, and in 2015 we started producing digital catalogues with critical essays.

Historic Bridgetown Photobook The executive of BPS is making this appeal to you for your support for the attractively photographed and well scripted Historic Bridgetown Photo Book which has been produced by some of our members. This book was conceived to relate and commemorate the history of our capital city for the benefit all, including visitors to Barbados. It is also a fitting tribute to Bridgetown on this island’s achievement of 50 years of independence. The book currently exists in electronic form and your support is needed to move the project to the next stage of printing. At our AGM held on January 28th. most of the members present agreed to buy one or more copies, in advance, for themselves and as gifts for family and friends overseas. I appreciate the support of those persons, but as we need to print a minimum of 100 copies in order to keep the cost under $100.00 BDS per copy, we are appealing to the wider membership for your support of this project. Please indicate your desire to purchase copies of the Historic Bridgetown photobook in advance by filling out and submitting the completed form below as soon as possible.
