“A lonely girl in Barbados needed to draw. It was an “urgency,” she says. Starting with one simple notebook, Sheena Rose would eventually turn her house into an art-filled exhibition space, attracting hundreds of visitors and international attention. That was only the beginning. In a country without a modern art museum, Rose took her creations to the city streets, saw them featured on book covers and traveled south to create billboards in Suriname. She exploded on social media, and her work eventually reached international collections and art biennales. Leading by example, Rose believes that the region’s talent can spur economic growth. “I’ve been doing this for years to prove what creativity can do, to show how to be successful,” she says. “Dream, don’t give up and keep working. People are listening right now.” https://www.iadb.org/en/improvinglives/creativity-inspire-caribbean-economy

Artists Alliance Barbados presents Kraig Yearwood’s ‘Retro-Future Landscapes’ installation at Norman Centre. June 11th - July 5th.

Artists Alliance Barbados presented the finished installation of Kraig Yearwood’s 'Retro Future Landscapes‘ Exhibited at Norman Centre, Bridgetown. Curated by Oneka Small The Exhibition explores themes of mass consumption and materialism, as well as socio-economic, cultural and environmental decay.

" There are some really well resolved pieces in this collection; especially the 'minimalist' concrete works, which resonate with social awareness & conviction. I've been keenly (but quietly) watching Kraig Yearwood's steady artistic growth, his ever expanding visual vocabulary which has become a poetic expression of self-interrogation..... also of note, in his recent work is the new material 'languages' which he has cultivated/discovered to challenge and address the cultural/socio/political spaces in our dysfunctional system! I eagerly anticipate viewing this presentation........... " Akyem-i Ramsay

VERSIA HARRIS “Fantasy is defined as unrealistic mental images on which one repeatedly dwells, that reflect one’s conscious or unconscious desires. Joel Kovel says that fantasy is [“ a form of knowing based on wish and desire – i.e.”.] It can be used as a weapon, a way to be accepted, a way to gather, a way to separate, entertainment, and remnants of infantile wishes. It has its hand in segregation, racism, in homophobia and sexism. Fantasy is cultural, social and political. The fantasies we have about our personal identities run in tandem with the shared ideas of our cultures and societies. They are both shifting and reflecting each other and when they inevitably contradict each other, the tension created is fertile grounds for new ideas about their nature and creative space for new ideals to emerge. Fantasy may arise from a lack of control over a particular situation and the act of dreaming is an attempt at conquering or about reclaiming a kind of power over our individual or collective worlds. Through sculpture, installation and video I address the affects of personal, cultural and political fantasies and the incongruences that arise when what is dreamt is not what is. And I ask how the physical world can be and has been shaped to reflect them.” www.versiaharris.com

‘YOUNG ARTISTS’, an exhibition by recent graduates of Barbados Community College Fine Arts Division. Opening reception Sunday 11th August, 5pm-8pm at the Barbados Arts Council’s Gallery, #20 Pelican Craft Centre. Exhibition ends 24th August. Featuring Simone Asia, Jadisa A. Andwele, Theresa Bailey, Keisha Carrington, Joanna Crichlow, Doreen Edwards, Alanis Aaliyah Forde, Anna Gibson, Versia Abeda Harris, Nyssa Haynesholder, Gabrielle Moore, Akilah Watts. Curated by Kathy Yearwood “Every year I look forward to the Graduates exhibition, amazed by the quality and diversity. But after that they are seldom seen again. Some fly, some find their wings early, but they all need help as they set out. Too many drift away and with the promise of the long awaited National Gallery we can’t afford to lose them. This is the first of a series of exhibitions to give them a chance to become known to a much wider public.” Kathy Yearwood.

LOGAN THOMAS Success! Here is my piece titled “What’s Past Is Prologue”, that was entered into the Crop Over Visual Arts Festival 2019 - with its opening at the Grande Salle of the Central Bank. Not only was it the only photograph (correct me if I’m wrong) it also achieved its intended goals of starting conversation around the roles of art in Barbados, AND the curation of the exhibition placed it exactly where I hoped it would be, facing the entire room of work in that space with, as someone else put it “those eyes following me”. I didn’t receive any awards or public recognition, but that wasn’t the goal, the goal was to make the work, display it and gather responses. So dreamt, so done. Thanks Alexandra for the photo

CHERISE HARRIS

Congratulations to artist Cherise Harris of Cherise Harris Illustration. Thanks to NCF Chief Executive Officer, Carol Roberts who saw the potential and decided to expand its scope and scale. "The Research and Documentation Officer noted that it was important to the Foundation to continue the discourse on our heritage in a way that parents and educators have not been able to do before, while also recognising the connection to African folk characters. She commented on the overwhelmingly positive response, highlighting the popularity of adult colouring books in recent times and adding that parents are interested in it because they not only see it as an important tool to connect with their children, but they also like the activities – it’s therapeutic. For the production of this particular Crop Over colouring and activity book, the NCF brought on board Cherise Harris, a local illustrator to help design the book. She was enthusiastic about the whole process and described how much she enjoyed researching and learning more about the history of Crop Over. “I think developing a colouring and activity book for children was a great idea. It’s going to allow children the opportunity to interact with a part of Barbadian history in a different way, and will be a fun learning experience.” Harris explained that illustrating books is usually a collaborative process but the historical nature of the book required a lot more back and forth which helped to strengthen the ideas and final product. A limited number of the colouring books are currently available at the NCF. The Foundation will be distributing copies of the colouring book at Junior Kadooment, the Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch competition and at Bridgetown Market. http://www.ncf.bb/colour-and-learn/

BARBADOS PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY July theme ‘Looking Up’ "Fine Art Photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as a photographer. The goal is to express an idea, a message, or an emotion.“ "this is an example of what happens when you just leave all conventional rules behind and let creativity take you to an endpoint that you like. The result may not be everyone's cup of tea, but what matters most is that you are happy with what you have created." Hugh Walker

"Barbadian artist and aspiring writer Kia Redman shares her final blog post about her Colleen Lewis Research/Writing Residency at Fresh Milk. The last week was somewhat stressful as she prepared for her first public reading at the event FRESH MILK XXII: Residency Readings, while also offering moments of relief through outings and interactions with her fellow residents, the Fresh Milk Team and the wider creative community. Spilling over into a 5th, unplanned week has been just the thing for Kia to comedown from the intensity of her performance, continue her research, and even embark on a new visual work to complement her written/spoken word piece.“ https://freshmilkbarbados.com/2019/07/11/kia-redmans-fresh-milk-residency-week-4-blog-post/ Fresh Milk
