BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS
December 2011
Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events December 2011 This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

'Blooming Roses' by Corrie Scott. This series is from my iphone using the Hipstamatic App with just a 60watt bulb. I decided to exhibit these to show that photography is open to any camera and any interpretation (and any modern app). No corrections of any kind have been made on these images except for re sizing the image to 5" by 5" at 300dpi. It is as it was photographed. Printed with archival inks on acid free paper. Series of 17.

FOOTPRINTS OF OUR HERITAGE a photographic exhibition by Ronnie Carrington featuring selected works from the Carrington Collection and introducing PATHWAYS… thoughts on the journey The Loft, Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, Holetown, St James Mon, Dec 5th through Sat Dec 31st 10am – 6pm daily ronniebarbados@me.com 426-0830 or 230-9170 The Carrington Collection The images of the Carrington Collection were made during the last quarter of the 20th century and represent the end of an era. Gone are the days of sugar cane’s dominance, when an aerial view revealed unbroken expanses of quilted, green patchworks of sugarcane fields, punctuated by palatial plantation houses and frantic factories. Ceased are the sounds of the industry’s symphony – factory-yard horns, steam exhausts, blacksmith’s hammer, competing for aural attention. Transformed are the nurturing villages of colourful chattel houses that were the incubators of the values we passed on to our offspring. Uprooted is the public bath and village standpipe, meeting place and germinating ground of gossip. No more do our children amuse themselves with games and toys of their own making… and silent are the voices of correction that echoed across unpaved accesses, when we got out of hand. Scarce are the village joiners and jovial juice-makers, seamstresses and celebrated school teachers, basket-makers and butchers. This is the canvas on which these images were created and are now preserved for sharing – the bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Today they may be artistic expression, tomorrow, a part of our history. Ronnie Carrington

‘TOWN TO TOWN’ Artist Sheena Rose Nov 11th – 25th
In November Morning side Gallery in conjunction with the Barbados Community College presented ‘Town to Town’, the solo show of recent graduate and alumni Sheena Rose. The new works focus on her bodies of work that were created through her experience of living in Bridgetown and her residency in Cape Town in 2010. Rose’s interest is embedded in the daily lives of the people and how they relate to each other socially and culturally. The new works are rendered through various mediums including drawing (works on paper) and animation. Sheena Rose is a contemporary Caribbean artist from Barbados. In 2008, Sheena graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with Honours. She is known for her hand drawn animations and has exhibited her work regionally and internationally, with exhibitions throughout the Caribbean, the U.S., South Africa and South America. https://picasaweb.google.com/105714821715531443977/SheenaRoseTownToTownNov2011# http://sroseart.tumblr.com/
Artist’s Statement ‘Town to Town’ is about the busy urban life style and experience of Bridgetown and Cape Town. There are similarities and also contrasts between these two towns. I believe what makes this exhibition interesting, is that in most of the art works, you cannot really distinguish which stores, shopping windows or streets belong to which town. In 2010, I participated in an artist’s residency in Cape Town, South Africa for three months and I looked at the difference between where I came from which is Barbados and where I was living temporarily. I want the viewers to get the chance to see my interpretation between these two towns. I am interested in the daily lives of persons and the idea of the space. In the exhibition, there are different sized drawings and silent animations. The animations are silent because I want the viewers to focus on the visual aspect of the work and see that the animations are moving drawings. Some of the animations are narrative and some are abstracted because we collect information subconsciously and it creates a very abstract story. In this exhibition, I want to give the viewers a chance to see my interpretation of these two towns and they can relate and have their own interpretation of ‘Town to Town’. Sheena Rose

BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/

My website - www.rosemaryparkinson.com in-shop is offering two e-books - Shake Dat Cocktail (a trip around the islands on cocktails) and Cocktails & Hors D' Oeuvres with myself and the late Grand Dame of Caribbean Cuisine Chef Norma Shirley. Both make great presents. Nyam Jamaica is on special for Christmas at US$140 including shipping. Those living in Barbados can order through me direct for BDS$150 signed. In Jamaica, of course, the book is carried by most bookstores. If you are visiting Devon House, Grogg Shop has them and whilst you are there, do enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. Norma Shirley's spirit lives on. On NBC's morning show as one of the best picks for 2008/9 as Christmas presents, Nyam Jamaica makes an incredible corporate gift as it is not just a cookbook but a culinary tour that includes history, traditions and culture, meeting the people from parish to parish. It can be used from Primary to University level as an educational book and is in the hands of several international Chefs and, therefore, not only useful for a hotel or restaurant but also for culinary schools/colleges/universities. A collector's item, there are few left and there will be no more hard copies once the original stock of 6,000 copies is finished (see website for details and download for free the sponsorship proposal to learn more). NEWS RE BARBADOS BOOK: The Barbados book - Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n - goes to the designers on January 16th and this is good news especially for me as I believe it is time to put this book to rest from my computer and have the world see it. We are going for GOLD in Paris again. Endorsed by the late Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson; by Mia Mottley and the Inter-American Institute for CoOperation in Agriculture - Barbados - with comments from international Chef Art Smith (Oprah's personal Chef), writer/author Barbadian Elombe Mottley (Jamaica), playright/author/artist Trinidadian Lennox Raphael (Denmark) and others, this book is carded to hit the world like a good refreshing storm! On my website you will also find under Downloads, a synopsis for sponsorship for the Barbados book. If you would like to sponsor a double page for say a farmer, just have your corporate office's logo and details within or have an amazing food product or related product (restaurant, hotel) that you wish to go down in the annals of history, please contact me ASAP as I begin to close down this opportunity. This book is also a collector's item, will be going to be judged at the World Cookbook Awards in Paris, and I know will be one that will make Barbados proud and be placed into the annals of history. Naturally it is a big hard-cover visual book and costly to produce, so I am asking to dig deep into your budgets and let me know if there is a bit of sponsorship available. Bless. On Wednesday October 26 , 2011, an historical event took place at around 4:45pm in the evening the Grand Unveiling of the Hastings Mural
When first considered as a project over a year ago, the concept of installing a mural was one that was highly regarded among the board of the Future Centre Trust and by extension its funders at the time, which was the Tourism Development Corporation. The Corporation saw the relevance to their goals of continuing to add to the Tourism product while assisting the country’s natural environment. The concept was one that of course needed to be approved by the relevant authorities, those being the National Conservation Commission and the Coastal Zone Management Unit both under the Ministry of Environment and Drainage. Both agencies approved the use of the wall, and of course we are so very grateful. The support of the TDC, which thankfully was held over into 2011, provided the basis for the FCT to then approach other partners to the project which was focused on South Coast businesses. From those who were directly invited, we now have the following financial partners to this wonderful initiative: Sponsor: Tourism Development Corporation (TDC) Gold Partners: KPMG and Barbados Fertility Centre and Silver Partners: Blakeys Bar and Restaurant, Art Splash Cafe and Tapas Restaurant We are also proud to include in this project, our long time supporters, the BL&PC. We then engaged the Barbados Sea Turtle Project through Dr Julia Horrocks to provide the information which is now included in the mural for the information of users to the area. We thank Dr Horrocks for her contribution. Mr David Spieler, a fellow Board member of the FCT was the designer for the mural and assisted greatly by managing the day to day installation of the mural, making the various plaques of turtles in the design and of course contributing a large amount of reused material to the design itself. Mr Ansil 'Rusty' Williams was the tiler on the project and did a magnificent job, to which you will agree I am sure! The FCT focuses on education and action, with this project no exception. This education will be learned through many ways: · Through its relevance to environment – physical both through the presence of the mural, and the biodiversity the mural seeks to assist, · Through the relationship of social interactions and contributions as is seen by one of our funders in the Barbados Fertility Centre; · And of course through the economic environment – in the way of visitors to the island, partners to the project and the general increased awareness of attractions and beauty on the South Coast; · It has a distinct relevance to Tourism – providing the area with a pleasant and informative attraction for visitors to Barbados and the area. It is already being used as a popular photo spot and has contributed to Barbados' tourism offerings. This is a great symbol of Barbados moving forward with its goals of a Green Economy for our visitors; · The mural is an educational and beautiful use of space; · It is already being used as an educational tool and has great applications to particularly primary aged children in this regard; · The mural highlights facts related to the hawksbill turtle which is endangered, with Barbados being an ideal nesting ground; · The mural was designed to educate and provide basic information to contact the Sea Turtle hotline when turtles and/or eggs are seen; Overall I think you would agree that this installation has many, many benefits. It is beautifully educational and is a project that all at the FCT are very proud of and we are grateful to be given this opportunity to enhance our environment in this way.
