BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS

December 2013

Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

HEIDI BERGER 427 8023 heidimberger@gmail.com heidiberger.com

HEIDI BERGER My paintings are narratives — through surfaces, words and images, I tell a story. I manipulate the surface or the underpainting with collage, paint and texture to form a palimpsest — an overlay of half erased layers, which allows the past to be visible in the present. —until a narrative reveals itself to me, which I complete with images and words. I have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and my paintings are found in private and corporate collections in many parts of the world. I teach art in Barbados and Canada. Recent paintings are in the feature film "I'll follow you down" directed by Richie Mehta, released in 2013.

LILIAN STEN www.lilianstenartstudio.com

LILIAN STEN NICHOLSON lilian.sten@gmail.com www.lilianstenartstudio.com 423 6237/ 250 1918 “Work is love made visible” Kahlil Gibran The works I created especially for !BEHOLD! were inspired by the poem ‘The Rose’ and the vibrance of Moroccan pigments, a gift from my daughter Arwen. The pigments have wonderful names like; ‘vermillion’,’ ezmeralde’, ‘ indigo’, ‘jujuba’ and ‘Bleu d’Algiers’ and I prepare them the old fashioned way, by grinding them with a glass muller and mixing them with a blend of linseed- and essential oils. The process is time consuming, but immensely satisfying to my painterly soul. I am also showing a series of reduced palette oil paintings and mixed media work, all part of my ongoing love affair with life and in harmony with the theme. Some are new and some are from my private collection. Lilian Sten-Nicholson is a painter and printmaker, but is equally versed in mixed media .Her main inspiration is music, in all its forms, especially the heartbeat rhythms of the Caribbean. Her work various from monochromes to vivid colours, from stark black on white to subtle nuances of layered work. She has made a significant contribution to the Caribbean art scene as a visual artist, writer, teacher and curator . She is a former president of the Barbados Arts Council, a member of the International Art Critics association and a tutor at the Division of Fine Arts, BCC.

HEATHER-DAWN SCOTT kinrarasutherland@hotmail.com 246 820 0449

HEATHER-DAWN SCOTT Picture making, mark making, construction, the forming of composition, the realisation of an idea, these have become my way if life. There is little or nothing that I do that is not related to art or the forming of a piece of work.

MARTINA PILE (246) 268-6850 mzpilevisualarts@gmail.com www.artgallery-mzpile.com

MZPilĂŠ Originally from Luxembourg, Martina PilĂŠ Zahles lives and works in Barbados as a professional Visual Artist. Her work relates mostly to her Caribbean experience. She uses many 2D and 3D medium to explore the myths and legends of Womanhood of the 3 Cultures that have influenced Barbados. One of those mediums is the calabash with which she likes to investigate its mythologies, possibilities and relevance to our modern society.

ALISON CHAPMAN- ANDREWS 420 4897 alisonca42@gmail.com www.alisonchapmanandrews.net

ALISON CHAPMAN-ANDREWS “I believe that the next painting produced will be the one to succeed totally. This continual search for a successful personal outcome is what it seems to be about. All I can do is keep making, composing, and working. Fortunately each painting, magically, seems to carry within it the germ of the next.” She is currently concerned with texture of paint and the use of collage. Materials used in these works include bark cloth, various weaves of linen, sand, sand paper, coconut cloth, buttons, polystyrene, a selection of Japanese papers, and various cloths. Acid free gel has been used as glue and most surfaces are covered in acrylic paint. The new work also forms part of an ongoing search for a new subject matter “Bathing Suits’ “are of the same size and format, a torso with arms outstretched, or upper part of the thighs reflect the bust , sharply turned. Most are on linen and have an element of collage; they are female figures, mostly in a swimming pool.

NATALIE J ATKINS-HINDS 230-7422 or 425-6286

NATALIE J ATKINS-HINDS Cultural Theorists Stuart Hall, defines the term Representation as “the production of meaning through language.” Art is a language. With regards to this, art becomes my personal language that stands as a symbolic representation of my thoughts. My most recent reflections are embedded in unraveling and defining meanings that consider the Historical and Cultural Constructs that are manifested today as consequences of The Barbadian Colonial Regime. Historical documentation suggests white beauty aesthetics were used as one measuring tool to differentiate and categorize black women as being inferior to whites. My painting series, “I want a Pony Tail” and “Hair and the Politics of Identity” speaks to this dynamic. To this end the aesthetic issue of black women and their hair has long been a peripheral discourse standing as one of many building blocks formed on the plantation used to maintain a “larger” oppressive agenda constructed by a colonial regime.

TRACEY WILLIAMS arthub.barbados@gmail.com work 436-2950 mobile 2316847 home 432-2125

TRACEY WILLIAMS A primary passion for colour, led to floral painting. In these Tracey brought out the beauty, colourful and sensuous nature of flowers, producing large floral studies. She was trained by renowned artist Stanley Greaves and apprenticed in the studio of Alison Chapman-Andrews and himself. Here she also rendered large anatomical paintings. Tracey’s previous solo exhibitions centered on “Flowers “, creating a magical and realistic world bringing out their colourful and sexual properties. She felt it a natural progression to extend to landscape Painting, depicting workers in fields .In this group show Tracey’s, exploration of flowers continues, where she incorporates herself as part of the flowers as if at one with them, emerging and coming into rebirth. Tracey’s love of colour and exploring the layering of one colour paint over another, creates atmosphere, mood and vibrancy.

SIMBAH PILE simbahp@gmail.com http://simbah.tumblr.com/

SIMBAH PILE Artist Statement The Female Character is essential to my art work. She is the lead protagonist and plays variety of archetypes in which I explore the roles given to female characters via pop culture, narratives, and societal expectations/norms. As a female myself I believe using a character I can identify with will produce the most honest work. I feel there is a battle for the present day female in defining herself, with the bombardment of external influences from the time she is a child and throughout the rest of modern life - it is this battle that I attempt to address with my work. Simbah Pilé is a contemporary Barbadian artist living and working in the UK, she has exhibited in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. In 2009 she graduated from Barbados Community College with a Fine Art Degree, she has been an active part of the art community in Barbados since. In 2011 she curated her first exhibition which focused on the spectrum of Contemporary Illustration in Barbados, and later that year represented the Caribbean in the Wasanii International Artist Workshop titled “In Conversation”. Since then she has been living and working within the UK

JOYCE DANIEL Joyce Daniel is recognized as one of the outstanding Barbadian Artists. Her contribution to the development of the Visual Arts in Barbados was recognized in the award the Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts and the Barbados Government award of the Silver Crown of Merit. Ms Daniel has represented Barbados in many international exhibitions, such as the Caribbean Festival of the Creative Arts (CARIFESTA), The Triennial of Small Prints in Chamallier, France, ‘Barbadiana’ as well as the prestigous Sao Paulo Bienal to name but a few. Ms Daniel has won numerous awards in the fields of painting, textiles and printmaking. She has throughout her career returned to the theme of Women.

NAKAZZI www.nakazzi.com

NAKAZZI I choose my materials for their evocative qualities as well as their metaphysical properties. I am drawn to them by the evidence of life I see in their form, growth and decay in cosmic equilibrium. collecting these materials is an integral part of my process, and I consider long walks spent foraging in the wild, searching and finding unexpected treasures, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. I find in the process of peeling away the layers of the tree bark a metaphor for life and I am in essence peeling away layers of myself only to reveal other layers. I am constantly searching for truth, expressing, growing, changing, evolving

The Arts Directory Barbados http://issuu.com/corriescott/docs/art_directory_barbados_dec_2011/1

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. IF I NEVER WENT HOME by INGRID PERSAUD Powerful characters, evocative descriptions, and a tale of two cultures make this lyrical debut novel sing . – ForeWord Review Ingrid Persaud writes a fantastic tale of survival and triumph without making the story too sweet or melodramatic. – Readers Favorite absorbing, warm and rich – The Book Bag An often colorful novel that refreshingly doesn’t fall back on clichés. – Kirkus Review Sometimes the only way home is to leave the one you know. Written in two distinct, alternating voices, If I Never Went Home follows ten years in the turbulent lives of two narrators – thirty-something Bea, an immigrant in Boston, and ten-year-old Tina in Trinidad – as they separately navigate devastating losses, illness and betrayal in their quest to belong. About Ingrid Persaud: Ingrid Persaud is a writer and artist. 'The Coral Stone Village Meeting' by Unknown artist Each piece which has been positioned and topped with other pieces of coral stone. In rows. The front row close to the sea appear to be 'the elders' as they have a little more space between themselves and the 'people'. Created by an unknown NCC worker, male, who came during the week to Batts Rock Bay and while he cleans he is created these 'meetings' of coral. There were a few others started along the beach but this one had the largest 'crowd'. Sad to report that thuggish vandals have knocked this wonderful installation down.

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org

MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

the Virtual Mapping Project, addresses the lack of available information about Caribbean arts at the formal, informal and educational levels. Fresh Milk sees value in developing a freely accessible, interactive online map of the Caribbean, which will clearly delineate the existing spaces for the arts in the region, from the nineteenth century up to the present time. The region will be mapped to show all arts entities, listed with links to the websites of all the spaces, and maintained to keep all information current. This map will not only be a pivotal information hub and educational tool, but a place to form new bonds and to make connections among practitioners, not only in the Caribbean but worldwide. The Fresh Milk mapping project will be an invaluable resource for students at secondary and tertiary institutions in Barbados, including those studying art at CXC CSEC and CAPE level, BCC Art Associate Degree and BFA programmes, and participants in the BA and MA Cultural Studies and Creative Arts degrees at the EBCCI, UWI Cave Hill Campus. This wealth of knowledge compiled into one easily accessible website means that students can have both historical and current data about Caribbean art at their fingertips, broadening their understanding and keeping up to date with the new, cutting edge work coming out of the region. Additionally, the Virtual Map will create opportunities for artists working in the region today and circulate their works and ideas to a global audience eager to know more about the region's creative arena. Artists will have the chance to form an expansive network, informing them of what spaces - both formal and informal networks - exist in the region and which spaces they can potentially engage with. It opens up endless possibilities for artists, curators, collectors etc. in the Caribbean by giving them much needed exposure, as well as for those internationally, who will gain insight into a whole new market of quality work. Fresh Milk seeks to create a more integrated and connected region by using the arts as a vehicle to create partnerships and build community. Many Caribbean islands have no idea what is happening with their neighbours in the creative arts, which hinders our overall growth in the region. The Virtual Map will promote unity and aid in the building of support systems - whether it be the English, Spanish, French or Dutch speaking Caribbean, we would like to make sure all information is communicated as efficiently as possible, and invite the world to see what is being made and to see the region as a critical space. Fresh Milk is pleased to be the conduit between The Maria Holder Memorial Trust and the artistic community in Barbados and would like to thank them for their support, which allows Fresh Milk to continue supporting our nation’s youth and building capacity for artists in both the short and long term. This is why forming relationships with organizations with vested interest in expanding arts and culture becomes pivotal.

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs.
