RAS AKYEM art_animal@yahoo.com Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award 2010
The Committee for the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts has selected outstanding artist Ras Akyem I Ramsay to be the recipient of the 2010 award. This year marks the seventh presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award In The Visual Arts, which was initiated in 2001 to give due recognition and honour to visual artists who have made significant contributions to artistic development in Barbados. In a Press release yesterday, the committee stated that it was felt that in Barbados, artists receive only a fraction of the acclaim given to other prominent achievers. “With the support of the Nation Publishing Company, the Central Bank of Barbados and other generous sponsors, the award is held every other year and the accompanying retrospective of the artists’ works are eagerly anticipated by art enthusiasts,” the committee added. Ras Akyem has had a prolific career as an artist spanning over three decades. From his childhood in New Orleans, The City, he knew he wanted to be an artist and has achieved his goal with vigour and perseverance. His work has been described as “brilliant”, “revolutionary”, “militant” and “authentic”. This “art animal” considers art as the essence of his being and he chose to pursue his art on a full-time, professional basis, determined to gain the respect he felt artists deserved. Akyem first came to the public’s attention when his powerful large painting, House Of King David, won the Art Collection Foundation’s Purchase Award in 1984. The following year his piece, Mother Earth, won the Caribbean Benson & Hedges World Of Art Competition. Explosive paintings. But it was at the 1989 Vexx exhibition at Queen’s Park Gallery that Akyem’s and Ishi’s explosive paintings caused consternation among patrons. The DAILY NATION of June 1, 1989, reported on the exhibition as “arguably the most expressive local visual arts exhibition ever to be staged in Barbados”. Other notable exhibitions of Akyem’s work have been Havana – Antes y Despues at the Kirby Gallery in 1998 and some years later, Dark Angel at Zemicon. Influenced by Rastafari, Akyem has used his art “as a tool to make social statements or to highlight social ills”. Controversial though his art has been, his talent has been lauded locally, regionally and internationally, and his pieces are avidly acquired by private collectors and national collections. Over 30 of Akyem’s major paintings were exhibited at the Grand Salle of the Central Bank from in October 2010 www.nationnews.com/articles/view/lifetime-award-for-ras-akyem/

Florianna “This collection of paintings originates in an awareness of the deep human yearning to find a paradise. The flowers appear fleeting and ephemeral, amidst foliage that is familiar, yet amplified. Like messengers from another world, they exist as moment in time, moments of aspiration, beauty, hope, desire, lust. purification. As objects of contemplation, they become offerings to that which we long for. The vibrant colour is chosen to create a sense of rejoicing, but at the same time I am reaching for a softness, focus and calm with smooth surfaces and control. Unlike the traditional still life painter, it is not the natural world I put before the viewer, nor is it an already imagined world. The foliage and flowers are events created on the canvas, their only referent is their encounter on the blank white surface between the brush paint and my imagination. Above all, the images thus document my journey through the process of creation and their varying expressions may be seen as an emotional register ranging from the restrained to the exuberant. The series represents an effort to push my artistic boundaries and to increase simultaneously my control of the medium and my receptivity to the flow and rhythms of life. Lorna Rose October 2010

U.S. Embassy Helps Support Book of Photos of Historic Chattel Houses by Photographer Bob Kiss http://barbados.usembassy.gov/pe10042010.html
Cont’d…..
U.S. Embassy Helps Support Book of Photos of Historic Chattel Houses by Photographer Bob Kiss Chattel houses were born out of necessity and ingenuity when, following the abolition of slavery in 1838, newly freed workers gained the opportunity to seek favourable employment but also the responsibility to house themselves. The chattel house, originally built from pine boards and a simple roof, could be broken down, moved and reconstructed quickly and easily. A mobile home that could be packed up and put on an ox cart with the rest of the owner’s possessions, not only offered this flexibility, but also gave the owner the power to negotiate with employers and the power to decide his own destiny. While the houses were constructed on a rubble stone foundation on land that was leased, ownership of the house itself and building of the foundation was great source of pride. As economic situations improved, houses were extended, decorative additions were made, and the foundations became more permanent when the owners were allowed to purchase the land. The future of many of these chattel houses is uncertain. American photographer Bob Kiss, a long-time resident of Barbados, is working to preserve the houses by documenting them through photographs printed using a platinum-palladium printing technique developed in the 1870s. Each contact print – made from an 8x10 inch negative, the same size as the final print – has a magnificent warm colour and is rich in detail. The text of the book, describing the chattel houses, their historical impact and architectural importance, is being written by Professor Henry Fraser, President Emeritus, Barbados National Trust. The U.S. Embassy in Barbados is supporting Mr. Kiss’s important work through a grant for the development of his book of photos capturing the chattel houses of Barbados.

Inspiration My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivity that is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and “spiritual” character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally…

Benchmarks Exhibition November 20 – December 11, 2010 In celebration of our country's 44th year of independence the Aweipo Gallery will be featuring an exciting and very unique exhibition called “BENCHMARKS”. This exhibition explores the concept of vending and husktering as an early form of economic activity and financial freedom for the many emancipated blacks after plantation slavery. Eleven local artists – Nick Barnett, Cathy Cummins, Annalee Davis,Neville Legall, Denzil Mann, Rafza Nehaul, Rupert Piggot, Martine Pile', Ricardo Skeete, Don Small and Kraig Yearwood were asked to respond to the Vendor's Tray and Bajan bench, two pieces of furniture essential to the vendor's trade. These artists have submitted diverse, exciting and very creative works in both two and three dimensions. Come and celebrate our artists and our early movement towards economic freedom as a people!

Terminal C
SARAH VENABLE performed her gold award-winning poem ‘Terminal C’ at the Frank Collymore Hall during the Goddard Enterprises NIFCA Literary Arts Gala 2010
Here at the corner of Want and Don’t Want, a motor hums. With all we know about jet engines, you would think it’s ventilation, inhaling the so-called air in this concrete room, and sending it away. The smoke is so dense you could almost part its curtains. But no, the hum is from elsewhere, like everyone here. This clotted cloud is travelled with gravely voices, The occasional turbulence of a cough, Accents from far places, or the one You came from, long ago, En route from naivete to Whatever this is— A sick limbo where the stranded sit and fume, defeated by delays. Continued on next page……
One or two confide their woe, not because you’ve been there, but because you are here breathing in this place of ashes and complaints. It is a separate hell, that we condemned are glad to share— a silent, mass confession of self-abuse, releasing us sans absolution. Without our little sticks we would wander among the saved and the innocent— those souls who dwell in freshness, deaf to the nagging urge that whispers in our ears alone: “Suck hot air. Breathe poison.” Without this place, we’d haul ourselves through unseen hells of longing. But here in the Atlanta airport smoking lounge, we enter the conspiracy of the damned and exit stinking of our sin.

OLIVER BURNETTE
“Oliver Burnette, one of Barbados' greatest traditional realistic Masters has just passed to the great beyond. Oliver Burnette's representations of Barbados are etched in social, geographical, mythical and historical codes, arresting time and immortalising now unknown social and physical realities that symbolize the growth and progression of a modern history of art in Barbados. May he Rest In Peace. Margaret Harris
OLIVER BURNETTE
OLIVER BURNETTE ( a tribute from his daughter Dale Burnette-Splude ) “I am my Father's Daughter. When I was a little girl I would sit on the fron step and wait for Daddy to come home from work. He came home early on Sundays. I would hold my position as if my Dad's very return depended on my being there. When i saw him coming I would run and jump into his arms. I can still remember the smell of his work clothes...that khaki outfit he wore to Sandy Lane Hotel. He was funny. He loved jokes; especially when he was with his brothers, my uncles. He was the only person I ever feared. But he is the only one I most loved, if not always well. Always stumbling towards one another, or backing away warily; too emotionally stubborn human beings, bound by blodd but strangled by unspoken tangled sentiment. He guarded us with a fierce determination. He taught me many things. To always speak the truth. To say what you mean and mean it. He was a great carpenter, that is why I can stand and watch a carpenter ply his trade and get lost in the smell of sawdust and wood shavings. When our doll's hair inevitably fell out, he would save the shavings so we could glue it on the dolls' heads with clammy cherry for hair. He passed on to me the gift of art. Sketching and painting; using charcoal, oils and pastels. Things that still bring me great joy. I remember sitting at the kitchen table holding an HB pencil listening to his words. Try to draw exactly what you see he would say and don't forget it's the shadowing that brings an object to life. He loved the colour green. He was a fantastic whistler and loved to whistle while he worked. I find myself doing it often. So Daddy, I thank you for being the best Father a little girl, now a woman could ask for. I loved you with all your imperfections. I thank you for shaping my character. My heart feels like stone. I cannot imagine a world without my Father in it. But I will bear this. I will toughen up. Because I am my Father's Daughter.

The Caribbean Sea will from May 1 next year be designated a "Special Area" under provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), a senior Barbados government minister has said." This means from that date the disposal of garbage and other pollutants in the wider Caribbean Sea is strictly prohibited, except in cases where it is processed in accordance with Annex V," International Transport Minister George Hutson said as the region gets ready to join the international community in observing World Maritime Day today. http://bajanreporter.com/salvation-army-launches-first-ever-ad-campaign-for-
The Salvation Army just launched their first ever advertising and PR campaign for its annual Christmas Mail Appeal in Barbados. Within the new campaign, created by Red Advertising, is a drive to deliver 50,000 more contribution envelopes through insertion in the Sunday newspapers. Major Dewhurst Jonas, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army commented on the rationale behind the campaign, Major Dewhurst Jonas, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army “This year we expect even more hardship to be faced by the needy, particularly the homeless and the hungry. We hope that people realise, even as they tighten their own belts, that these difficult economic times force more people to become vulnerable, and the need becomes even greater than before. Last year the contribution from Barbadians of all walks of life was magnificent, topping $250,000. This year we are appealing for more people to “Give the Gift of Hope this Christmas”, through the distribution of 50,000 more envelopes in the national newspapers. We know that big hearted Barbadians will respond to our call and rise to the challenge in the same way that they have coped with the many challenges recently.” Jevan Jutagir, Managing Director of Red Advertising, commented on the campaign, Our campaign strategy is simple – Get more donation envelopes in more hands. I urge anyone who receives an envelope to donate and, if you receive more than one, to pass it on and give someone else the chance to “Give the Gift of Hope at Christmas”. The spirit of giving was certainly evident in the creation of the campaign, where many people and companies donated their time and space. I would like to thank first and foremost – The Bajan Reporter: probably Barbados’ most popular online publication &Vic Fernandes (and the Market Vendor of course!) Toby Armstrong, Trident Insurance, Butterfield, Moore Paragon, The Barbados Postal Service, Starcom Network, The Nation Newspaper, The Barbados Advocate, Slam FM, Mix96FM, BBS and CBC. Without their generosity this campaign would not have been possible. With this level of backing I am confident that we will reach new heights for this important fund raising appeal.”
