Inspiration My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivity that is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and “spiritual” character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally…

The Central Bank Award ROMAL JONES
“The winning piece entitled Croc Bloc, and what was shown were five of the major/ more familar part of a crocodile. The parts shown were the Teeth, the Eye, the Skin, the claw, and the Tail. I choose these parts due to their connection to people, this connect was either fear or admiration. As well for my fascination with crocodile, being my all time favorite animal I had passion to want to be hold, touch or have my very own crocodile. This was possible thru the use of clay, I was able to successfully mold and crave out the crocodile's features. Essentially it was chunks of the crocodile, made from local clay , the pieces were sculpted in a way that they could stand as pieces on there own but would still reform the whole crocodile. “ Romal Jones The primary award offered was the Central Bank of Barbados Purchase Award which was increased in value to bds $7,500.00. The entry winning the Central Bank Purchase Award becomes a part of the National Collection and is displayed in the central bank of Barbados. The winner is also granted a solo show exhibition at the Queen's Park Gallery and an accompanying catalogue.

January 24th 2011 Nobel laureate Derek Walcott was honoured with Britain's most prestigious award for poetry last night when he won the TS Eliot prize for ‘White Egrets’. Sixty Years After In my wheelchair in the Virgin lounge at Vieuxfort, I saw, sitting in her own wheelchair, her beauty hunched like a crumpled flower, the one whom I thought as the fire of my young life would do her duty to be golden and beautiful and young forever even as I aged. She was treble-chinned, old, her devastating smile was netted in wrinkles, but I felt the fever briefly returning as we sat there, crippled, hating time and the lie of general pleasantries. Small waves still break against the small stone pier where a boatman left me in the orange peace of dusk, a half-century ago, maybe happier being erect, she like a deer in her shyness, I stalking an impossible consummation; those who knew us knew we would never be together, at least, not walking. Now the silent knives from the intercom went through us. www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/mar/27/white-egrets-derek-walcott-review www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/walcotts-meditation-on-dying-wins-poetry-prize2193300.html www.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/books/review/Kirchwey-t.html?_r=1

Love After Love The time will come when, with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome, and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life. "We Came on Different Ships" illustrates the uncomfortable issue of enslaved Africans and the Barbadian 'plantocracy' that imported them. Richard Ligon's diary entry on right is pastoral & bountiful. On the left, Olaudah Equitano's diary in Barbados tells of capture and fitful tempest....The tinted faces shout out 44 tribal African groups. The surrounding frame is festooned with gold, gems and chains. The littlle 'pickaninny' with eyes open wide, gives hope of freedoms' future. For Sale:

A HANDFULL OF DIRT Premiere on March 14, 2011 at the New Island Inn The Barbados premiere of “A Handful of Dirt”, the acclaimed debut feature of Barbadian filmmaker and visual artist Russell Watson will kick off the CaribbeanTales Film Festival, Symposium & Marketplace on March 14, 2011 at the New Island Inn. CEO of CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution (CTWD) and award-winning film maker, Frances-Anne Solomon in her address at the launch disclosed an exciting follow up to last year’s programme which is designed to further boost the local and regional film industry particularly in the area of content development. “Our Motto for this year is Vision, Momentum and Action... Our aim is to provide an injection of creativity with good business sense into the exploding Caribbean industry.” Solomon said. She revealed that CT2011 which will run to March 20, will feature a 5-day intensive Content Incubator aimed at developing market-driven audio-visual content. The programme will also include screenings, workshops, a symposium and market place. “Our focus for 2011 is on the exploration of popular indigenous stories and characters that will attract large audiences and funders, and contribute to a sustainable regional industry” Solomon noted. This year we want to get more precise and we are bringing together regional and international players to help us create an actionable blueprint he said. In 2010, the inaugural Barbados edition of the festival attracted 76 film makers, buyers, media professionals and visitors from the Caribbean, North America, the UK and South Africa to these shores and was a major boost for the fledgling Barbadian film industry. ARC THE MAGAZINE arcthemagazine.com/arc/ ARC Magazine is a quarterly Caribbean Art and Culture print and e-magazine published out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by artists Nadia Huggins and Holly Bynoe. We are endeavouring to form a creative platform to offer insight into current practices across the burgeoning creative industries, while bridging the gap between established and emerging artists. Within the recent motions of integration there is a critical space developing where, for the first time, we can envision a converging nexus of artists who want to share their creative experience. ARC Magazine presents a formula, an experiment and an imaginative body of curated work that exhibits the trajectory and the motion of artists who practice within the region. Within our collective networks, we are finding it necessary to make the common man and the aficionado aware of possibility of art, its evolution, trends and ‘personalities’. We also feel the need to provide a forum that celebrates creativity, its determination, dialogue and pleasure. It is our ambition to inspire and give voice to a new generation of independent, DIY and emerging artists who remain fearless while battling the parts, fractions and whole of their varied cultures. At ARC we want artists to negotiate their own space by offering a neutral ground that will license discourse and varied creative insights into the mind of an artist. ARC is a projected motion that goes up, outwards and beyond into a space of curiosity. Founders Holly Bynoe is a visual artist and writer from St. Vincent and the Grenadines; she currently works in New York City. She is a recent graduate of Bard College | International Center of Photography where she earned her M.F.A. in Advanced Photographic Studies. She has exhibited internationally and regionally in solo and group shows. www.hollybynoe.com. Nadia Huggins is a self-taught digital photographer. Her work is often described as emotional and conceptual. Currently she is a graphic designer at an advertising agency in St. Lucia, making her way around the archipelago exploring insights and cultures that have become relevant to her awakening and consciousness. She has been featured in several online and print publications and is part of the Depthcore Collective. www.nadiahuggins.com. ARC THE MAGAZINE Sheena Rose + Video Artist + Barbados + http://sroseart.tumblr.com
The primary focus of my animation is something that I can arguably say everyone struggles with, and that is constantly thinking about our daily problems. There are not very many times during the day when our minds are at rest. We are always dwelling on something that we need to do, a broken relationship, how we are going to manage paying the electricity bill as well as buying new school uniforms at the end of the month, not driving the car unnecessarily because gas costs more now-a-days. I am interested in the daily lives of Barbadian people, especially with what is going on in their minds. I have chosen to spotlight Broad Street and Swan Street because those are the two busiest places where people spend most of their time in Bridgetown. Since I started making Comics five years ago at Barbados Community College based on real, every day life situations I have always imagined stories about what happens in the lives of people around me. I enjoy observing people’s behaviour and how they relate to one another. It is like free entertainment. I try to get into the minds of people to think about what they may be thinking, and then try to predict their next action or just make up my own story for their lives. As an artist I believe my job is to pinpoint particular subject matters and make a work about it to bring awareness amongst the public about that situation. As an artist I am doing the same thing as the local newspaper would do by highlighting a certain event on the front page. www.creativecaribbeannetwork.com/page/12799/en www.douxdouxdarlingproductions.com With Dawn Cumberbatch
Reality television has become a worldwide phenomenon and while Trinidad has embarked upon several versions of it over the years, Dawn Cumberbatch and Natacha Jones have teamed up through their Doux Doux Darling production company and developed a 13-part reality series which strictly features aspects of the local mas fraternity. More like sisters than mere friends, Cumberbatch and Jones have created a show where although there are weekly eliminations which are staples of some reality shows, the specifics are very unique. This novel project is called "Get In Yuh Section" and 3Canal's Wendell Manwarren, who is a virtual icon in the local mas and cultural arenas, will serve as a mentor to the designers during the competition. Both ladies consider Manwarren to be nurturing, relatable and one with a wealth of knowledge. Sixteen contestants will be the focus as they are sequestered at a local hotel for just over three months and be expected to participate in weekly challenges where they will need to prove their skills on demand in creativity, determination, motivation and anything else the judges require. Citizens and foreigners of every creed and race participate in Carnival and this cosmopolitan flavour will also be reflected in the cast of contestants. "We're also encouraging the amateurs, the somewhat experienced, the not-so-experienced, the young student, the retiree, whomever, to come on board." Cumberbatch said. "People don't just want to be told about their history, they want to be entertained as well and this show will achieve just that. Listen, designing can be frustrating and people don't realise that." claimed Jones. "We will follow the participants around as they prepare for and execute their various tasks so you're going to be seeing the good, the bad and the ugly." explained Jones. What is so unique about this show is that the aspiring designers won't be called upon to design run-of-the-mill evening gowns or trendy casual attire; their assignments will see them competing with their skills of producing mas costumes. You might think that this is simple but it isn't; there will be challenges within the challenges so to speak. Viewers will be edified as to the process of making carnival costumes – from the choosing of the many types of material to sewing the item and completing it. Continued on next page………………….
So how exactly did this idea manifest itself? Cumberbatch, one of the Directors of Doux Doux Darling Productions (DDDP) who has formally pursued studies in film and television, replied, "I was invited to be a judge for mas while I worked at the Trinidad Theatre Workshop in 2000 and I had a wonderful time during the training just learning about all the traditions, history and techniques of the mas and so on. I judged the children's mas and Dimanche Gras and then Carnival Monday and Tuesday happened and it was like, hmmm‌ I felt that the adult mas got monotonous. It's been 10 years since then and nothing much has changed. I always pondered as to what we as a people can do to encourage a new look in mas. This was just a great way to accomplish something like that." Jones, also a Director of DDDP which was founded three years ago, exuded similar enthusiasm as she spoke. "This is a really exciting project that we started! Dawn and I always try to do something that is community-based and this is local so it belongs to us. We just decided to take the bull by the horns." Seemingly the conservative of the two, Cumberbatch offered, "We've already begun production work which will be included during the run of the show. Obviously, we won't want to give away too much about the show but I will say that this is definitely very different and Natacha and I are so thankful that we've gotten such tremendous support for this undertaking. Many are seeing value in the show." What is at stake for all the potential homesickness, fatigue, stress and pressure that the contenders may experience? The winner of this competition will have the privilege of designing a costume for an entire section of a very popular local mas band! Not a pitiable barter for the time and energy spent during the competition. The effervescent Jones, conversed passionately as she declared, "We always try to do things to empower women and whatever Dawn and I do is also to bring pride to our nation and our people. We can't wait for someone else to do it for us, we have to step up ourselves." Chiming in, Cumberbatch asserted, "We are just about showcasing positive things, quite simply. 'Get In Yuh Section' explores the traditions, history of mas, the unsung heroes." Jones added, "Trinidadians are such creative people but we don't use our imaginations and I think this show will be a vehicle to allow people to think outside the box." The darlings of Doux Doux Darling Productions can be reached via douxdouxdarlingproductions@gmail.com and their website is www.douxdouxdarlingproductions.com . Follow them also on Facebook. Interested candidates can register for the show via getinyuhsection@gmail.com . This pair, the individual trailblazers that they are, has done work which highlighted water conservation, adult literacy, less fortunate children, the problems of the socially displaced, HIV/AIDS and much more so they are quite conscientious in their approach to their field. They feel strongly about defending their culture as much as they do about the social aspects of the land of their birth. "I'm hoping that with the sugar-coating of the reality show type format, we can bring our culture back to the fore." related Cumberbatch. Stay tuned.

Last Man Standing: A Robert Joyette Collection of Contemporary Caribbean Art The work of Vincentian artist Robert Joyette is the first in the SFI Book Series of Contemporary Caribbean Art. This series places a spotlight on the work of artists across the region and takes their collections into the homes of the average Caribbean person. The Contemporary Caribbean Art Series is at once a celebration of the region's talent and promise, an acknowledgment that the artist has always been the instrument and spokesperson for the spirit of his or her age, and the recognition of that the artist "exercises an influence on the national consciousness which is incalculable." This series represents an effort to ensure that this influence goes further afield. Robert Joyette is a Vincentian by birth and a graduate of the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica. His ambition to become an artist was formed at the tender age of seven and he has pursued nothing else. Joyette has exhibited widely in Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and he has participated in exhibitions in Guyana and Stony Brook University in New York City. Joyette's influences span a wide range of master painters and it is in this collection that one sees the blossoming of Joyette's distinctive style. There are 28 pieces in this collection

BARBADOS TO HOST CARIBBEANTALES 2011 FILM FESTIVAL,
Barbados will once again host the CaribbeanTales Film Festival (CTFF), Symposium & Marketplace from March 7 – 20 2011. The festival follows a highly successful event held last year that was a major boost for the local and regional film industry. CEO of CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution and award-winning film maker, Frances-Anne Solomondisclosed that the Official Media Launch for the festival will take place at the Island Inn Hotel at 10.00 am on January 17. “The original CTFF held in Toronto for the last five years has been described as “bringing Caribbean films to the world”, while our Barbados event brings the film world to the Caribbean with a view to developing the regional audio-visual industry.” Solomon said. In 2010, the inaugural Barbados edition of the festival attracted 76 film makers, buyers, media professionals and visitors from the Caribbean, North America, the UK and South Africa to these shores and was a major boost for the fledgling Barbadian film industry. Among the many highlights was a workshop by renowned director, Julie Dash who was the first African American woman to have a film distributed theatrically throughout the United States. CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution Inc., the only company dedicated in the English-speaking Caribbean to the distribution of Caribbean audio-visual content will stage the event which will include a Content Incubator, educational screenings, workshops as well as a symposium and marketplace focused on Caribbean content. Speakers at the Media Launch will include Dr Keith Nurse, Chairman of CTWD, Frances-Anne Solomon andLisa Wickham, a director of CTWD. -Posted By Frances-Anne to Newz From CaribbeanTales
