BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS
February 2013
Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

‘TWO COLOURISTS’ Tracey Williams and Alison Chapman-Andrews at The Gallery of Caribbean Art Opening night Sunday 10th February, 5pm to 8pm Exhibition ends 6th March
ALISON CHAPMAN-ANDREWS www.alisonchapmanandrews.net
Alison Chapman- Andrews
Although trained in English art schools, Alison’s ” art vocabulary” was developed in the West Indian landscape, drawing in Barbados and Guyana. The rural environment of royal palms, fields and plants, became her inspiration and subject. As the subject was familiar and not “difficult”, she felt free to pursue her own interpretations and impose her ideas of colour and design. She is currently concerned with texture of paint and the use of collage. Materials used in these works include bark cloth, various weaves of linen, sand, sand paper, coconut cloth, buttons, polystyrene ,a selection of Japanese papers, and various cloths. Acid free gel has been used as glue and most surfaces are covered in acrylic paint. The new work also forms part of an ongoing search for a new subject matter This exhibition features a series of “Bathing Suits’ “of the same size and format, a torso with arms outstretched, and upper part of the thighs. Most are on linen and have an element of collage; they are all female with one exception. ( El Dorado , not illustrated) 12 are shown together in one large wall piece. The first painting was a mixture of the landscape, (a small painting of coconut fronds (exhibited here) show its inspiration, which then became the pattern on a suit she had seen while at aquasize. So they became figures in a swimming pool. This changed to bodies in the sea where they undergo a ‘’sea change into something new and strange (Shakespeare), and further develop into images referencing “Venus Arising from the foam” by Botticelli. In these the figure disappears into the sea, while a realistic sky emerges above the horizon. “I believe that the next painting produced will be the one to succeed totally. This continual search for a successful personal outcome is what it seems to be about. All I can do is keep making, composing, and working. Fortunately each painting, magically, seems to carry within it the germ of the next”

TRACEY WILLIAMS
Her first passion which is for colour, led to floral painting. In these she brought out the beauty, colourful and sensuous nature of flowers, producing large floral studies. She was trained by renowned artist Stanley Greaves and apprenticed in the studio of Alison Chapman-Andrews and himself. Here she also rendered large anatomical paintings. Tracey’s previous solo exhibitions centered around her “Flowers “, creating a magical and realistic world bringing out their colourful and sexual properties. She felt it a natural progression to extend to landscape Painting. This exhibition features her new landscape painting with one or two flower studies. Despite its heightened color these are surprisingly realistic, showing villages, field workers and overall the large skies, these reflect the colors of the land and the openness and light of the countryside. Tracey’s love of colour and exploring the layering of one colour paint over another, create atmosphere, mood and vibrancy.

BARBADOS December 27 2012 - April 2013, Stavronikita Project, underwater on SS Stavronikita The SS Stavronikita lies at the bottom of the ocean at 13.8 N, 59.38 W, right off the Caribbean island of Barbados. It is the spot Andreas Franke has discovered and chosen to stage a game full of overflowing decadence and exuberance. A traveling salesman, the Stavronikita fell victim to a devastating fire over 20 years ago and with no hope for recovery it was lowered into the silent depths to lie there - fossilized into an artificial reef which one thought would sleep for all eternity. But life clawed at the ship. For decades the sea enwrapped it with strange and splendid furnishings. A blinding submarine magnificence moved in, assumed command of the desolate freighter and made it vibrate with life. Innumerable shimmering corals, sponges and shells rampantly started clinging onto the stern, the masts and the walls and swarms of fish of the most varied natures began twitching restlessly round and about the scorched freighter. The wreck of the sunken Stavronikita is a stunning symbol of life’s irrepressible avidity. Life cannot be drained. It cannot be exhausted. It unfolds, it thrives, it proliferates, burgeons and multiplies. Right off the coast of Barbados it celebrates its expansive power, substantiating itself like a glimmering monster that devours and engulfs its victims. This swarming, decadent parade of life conquered the mind of Andreas Franke when diving on the premises of the SS Stavronikita. The well-known Viennese artist, who is famous for his meticulously construed photographic stagings, became possessed with the desire to make the Greek freighter into his next stage and thus the successor to the USS Vandenberg. He would create surprising, bizarre and equally bewitching images by combining photographs of the wreck with sceneries produced in a studio. The sight of the ship was like a landscape that had dropped its veil, vain and flirtatious. And it was almost as if the Stavronikita craved a mirror for the ever progressing, flickering life it displayed. But what above the surface would correspond to all of this submarine ado?
BARBADOS. December 27 2012 - April 2013, Stavronikita Project, underwater on SS Stavronikita
Rococo. The Viennese artist determined that this European era, this age of decadence with all its intoxicating extravagance, its vanity and disdain would sign-on to the Stavronikita. But did he really determine it? Was the Stavronikita not rather urging him to do so? The wreck full of lavish life demanded a match as overflowing and abundant as Rococo, its ideal equivalent. Out of algae, sponges and shells on the Stavronikita scenes seemed to emerge by themselves - scenes of provocative and voluptuous abandon. Three young ladies court gossip during a lavish picnic, accompanied by eminently trimmed and trained poodles. A woman in a blue dress obliviously indulges in a piece of cake, surrounded by an extravagant amount of overelaborate pastries and confectionaries. It is a typical image of Rococo: disgraceful, self-indulgent and immoderate. Andreas Franke presents you with one of the most flashing and flamboyant epochs of European style and cultural history in the midst of a scenery, in which nature displays all of its own abundance and prodigality. Magnets have been attached onto the pictures, which were then fastened onto the ship with great care taken not to disturb the ecological balance of marine life or to damage the outer skin of the Stavronikita. Those who search for life at its fullest on land will search in vain. They will have to dive to a depth of 24 meters. At 13.8 N, 59.38 W. Down to the SS Stravronikita, which now holds what is probably the lushest load it ever carried...

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. It is our duty as creatives to introduce our children to collecting original art. Art sparks their imagination, stories can be told from them about the subject, children can use their imagination to create their own stories or name the characters painted to make them their own. Children should also learn that appreciating art is a way of saving money...it is an investment. A painting does not lose value. I love to create Caribbean Children's art for all ages. I paint in acrylic on canvas in whatever size required. Hung separately or in panels that match together, they make wonderful visions for children. Murals for children are also special creating a wonderland in their bedroom or playroom. Consultations on your special requirements are by appointment.

I decided to exhibit these to show that photography is open to any camera and any interpretation (and any modern app). No corrections of any kind have been made on these images except for re sizing the image to 5" by 5" at 300dpi. It is as it was photographed. Printed with archival inks on acid free paper. R.I.P. “IZEBO” John Henry Knights Brathwaite By Penny Hynam On November 20th, 2012 the homelessurban street artist “Izebo” passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. His death was not announced in the newspapers and his burial has yet to take place. Despite a difficult and sometimes tragic life he never stopped painting and his singular dramatic murals can be seen on many walls and in many buildings across the island. The walls of Temple Yard in Bridgetown are a testament to and a reminder of his extraordinary work. An episode of the television series A Day in a Bajan Life devoted to the man and his work was broadcast on CBC-TV in August 2012. The National Gallery of Art has one of his works in their collection. His family has been unable so far to pay for a proper burial but are anxious that this must happen. Lyndhurst Funeral Home has kindly offered several services for free but we still need to raise the basic $4,500 to pay for the needed mortuary services, the chapel at Westbury and the costs of the burial at Westbury. Please donate whatever you can to help us properly respect one of our artists Contact Penny at 823-0013 for further information and to donate to a bank account set up for this purpose.

" Izebo is the unofficial chronicler of Bridgetown. From Black Rock to the Pine, Izebo's murals can be seen on shops and bars, on "hide-aways and palings. In the days when buses could sport paintings, his presence was even stronger. Izebo is as ubiquitous and elusive as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel". His work is also uneven. Sometimes it is obvious , that he was in a hurry, or in a bad mood or did not get paid enough for the job.Other paintings are true works of art, which should be documented before the sea blast, termites or bulldozers, the three greatest threats to our heritage, make a meal of them. Just recently, two of Izebo's paintings were inevitably lost in the NCF 'cleanup'.Inevitably, because the house paint, which is his preferred medium, has a limited lifespan. The mural at 'Double BB's Bar" in Bush Hall is an outstanding example of his work.It spans from the street entrance, (where even the meter box is decorated), all down the side and around the corner. It starts with bright colours and a fairly idyllic drinking scene, progresses past a most alluring and well endowed lady (Here's looking at you kid!) and culminates with the desperate debauchery of a late-night bar scene. The back paling does not quite contain its "Tyger", whose tail sneaks across the back door. The work is interrupted by stairs and doorways, which adds an interesting dimension to the viewing.. Barbadian folk murals are a relatively new occurrence. They are spontaneous and untutored and they are developing their own traditions.Peace, love, unity and freedom are important themes. Birds, rivers and "Tygers" abound. Rastafarian Iconography has a strong presence. The Murals and Mini parks state place, function and identity. They are to Barbados what pan is to Trinidad: things cast away as useless, marginalized or dismissed as unimportant have been turned into objects of breathtaking beauty, Lilian Sten-Nicholson AICA. Excerpt from " Icons, Tygers and Gentle Doves. The highway arts of Barbados". Signatur Barbados. 2000 issue. p 48.

Ariel Lyon's Watermedia Workshops 2013 February 12 - 15 at ArtSplash, Hasting Main Road
WORKSHOP 1: TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 12 - 13– ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS NEGATIVE PAINTING Negative painting means that rather than painting the object itself, the painter creates its shape by painting around it. It is a different, and important, way of seeing. You will learn how to develop an interesting underpainting using different techniques and then establish a composition using negative painting. You will do two medium sized paintings and several exercises to work with the underpainting. Subject matter will be up to you and you may choose to work either a realistic or abstract manner. You should have photos, a sketch book, and several small cheap boards or canvases to do the exercises on. You could even use watercolour paper that is covered with gesso for the exercises.
WORKSHOP 2. THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14 -15 - ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS REDUCTIVE TECHNIQUES IN ACRYLIC Instead of adding paint to a canvas, artists can also create a painting by subtracting paint. There are several techniques of doing this: cutting, carving, sanding, or by applying chemical additives. This process of painting is particularly suited to “OPEN” Golden Acrylics. These unique acrylic paints have much in common with oils in that they stay workable for much longer than regular acrylics and can be used for applications not generally well suited to fast drying paints, such as these reductive techniques. You will need two to three canvases. You will need Nickel Azo Gold and Raw Umber or Burnt Umber in the OPEN Golden Acrylics series. Ariel is going to use OPEN acrylics to finish off but if you can also choose to use regular acrylics with glazing liquid. You should also bring rubbing alcohol, a sponge, some rags, and your regular brushes. Subject matter will be up to you so you should bring photos if needed.

Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe's Residency at FRESH MILK FRESH MILK is very pleased to have Grenadian contemporary artist/activist and co-founder of Groundation Grenada Action Collective Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe on the platform, where she has been taking part in an artist residency between January 10th – February 4th. Her interdisciplinary approach to social change also includes yoga instruction at Spice Harmony Yoga Studio, which she runs with her family, and agricultural development and education work through The Grenada Goat Dairy Project. Malaika’s artistic inquiry is fueled by her engagement with community along these varying but interlinked pathways. On Friday February 1st at 1:00 pm, Malaika will be giving an artist talk to the BFA students at the Barbados Community College as part of her community outreach programme, and on Sunday February 3rd from 5:30-7:00 pm at FRESH MILK, she will have her final talk and screening of her short film created during this residency. Malaika's concept for the film: This short film will paint a portrait of a woman in her late twenties/thirties and her navigation, not so much through her life, but through her thoughts about her life. It will be an intimate meandering through the disjointed waters of her daily internal dialogue. As Stuart Hall has written, the past “…is always constructed through memory, fantasy, narrative and myth.” The site of this interpretation of our past experiences, and those of the people around us, is always located in the present. So, our moments of “now” are constantly occupied with reinterpretations and reshuffling of our past in relation to what we are encountering anew. This film seeks to explore the complex and ever fluctuating relationships that we have with our experiences and the sense of being/ego that is build around these experiences. What snippets of society/family/relationships run through our daily thoughts? What perceptions of our past, and potential future, blur our experiencing of our present moments? How do we find a balance between a blur and a necessary reflection/planning? Can we clear space and opt for neither, for just a moment of experience without constant interpretation? THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org
MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/
Issue #6 just out! ARC MAGAZINE ARC Magazine is a quarterly Caribbean Art and Culture Print Magazine published out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by artists, Nadia Huggins and Holly Bynoe. www.arcthemagazine.com www.facebook.com/arcmagazine twitter.com/arcthemagazine
ARC Magazine is a non-profit Caribbean Art and Culture publication www.arcthemagazine.com Company Overview ARC Magazine is a non-profit Caribbean Art and Culture Print and E-Magazine published out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by artists, Nadia Huggins and Holly Bynoe. “We are endeavoring to form a creative platform to offer insight into current practices across the burgeoning creative industries while bridging the gap between established and emerging artists. Within the recent motions of integration there is a critical space developing, where, for the first time we can envision a converging nexus of artists who want to share their creative experience. Description - To foster and develop dialogues and opportunities for individual and collaborative visual and literary artists across the region. - To showcase artwork that encapsulates a pan-Caribbean focus, also paying respect to meta-archipelago lack of boundaries and center. We aim to connect artists in the diaspora, with artists practicing in the region and continental Caribbean. - To stimulate sharing and creativity by providing an outlet for self expression and uniqueness. - To encourage the sustenance of our intangible and tangible heritages while building a deeper understand of the value and need for the artists work. - To engage with literary and visual arts in a way that reflects the power and dynamic of both traditions.
Turning 2: A Labour of Love By Stephanie Leitch “The government is still thinking of arts development within the realm of soca and calypso music, so there is no contemporary visual arts industry in which to work. Foundational aspects like the creation of a cultural bill to address the needs of the industry is still a long way off. These problems are not specific to St Vincent but other territories which may have more institutional support. “ http://arcthemagazine.com/arc/2013/01/turning-2-a-labour-of-love/
“Art is about the core elements of our lives, manifested in what we see, hear, taste, make, read and write, wear, and how we move. It is the creative footprint that becomes the discernible difference between people of different countries and experiences. It is a unique cultural trademark and the magnet that draws us to explore the corners of the world in search of those aspects of life that make us different from each other. It is the goal of the Barbados Summer Arts Festival to encourage the celebration of these seven elements that reflect our cultural identity and as we do so, to foster their development, allowing gainful and sustainable development for their practitioners.“ Ronnie Carrington www.barbadosartsfestival.com

My website - www.rosemaryparkinson.com in-shop is offering two e-books - Shake Dat Cocktail (a trip around the islands on cocktails) and Cocktails & Hors D' Oeuvres with myself and the late Grand Dame of Caribbean Cuisine Chef Norma Shirley. Both make great presents. Nyam Jamaica is on special for Christmas at US$140 including shipping. Those living in Barbados can order through me direct for BDS$150 signed. In Jamaica, of course, the book is carried by most bookstores. If you are visiting Devon House, Grogg Shop has them and whilst you are there, do enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. Norma Shirley's spirit lives on. On NBC's morning show as one of the best picks for 2008/9 as Christmas presents, Nyam Jamaica makes an incredible corporate gift as it is not just a cookbook but a culinary tour that includes history, traditions and culture, meeting the people from parish to parish. It can be used from Primary to University level as an educational book and is in the hands of several international Chefs and, therefore, not only useful for a hotel or restaurant but also for culinary schools/colleges/universities. A collector's item, there are few left and there will be no more hard copies once the original stock of 6,000 copies is finished (see website for details and download for free the sponsorship proposal to learn more). NEWS RE BARBADOS BOOK: The Barbados book - Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n - goes to the designers on January 16th and this is good news especially for me as I believe it is time to put this book to rest from my computer and have the world see it. We are going for GOLD in Paris again. Endorsed by the late Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson; by Mia Mottley and the Inter-American Institute for CoOperation in Agriculture - Barbados - with comments from international Chef Art Smith (Oprah's personal Chef), writer/author Barbadian Elombe Mottley (Jamaica), playright/author/artist Trinidadian Lennox Raphael (Denmark) and others, this book is carded to hit the world like a good refreshing storm! On my website you will also find under Downloads, a synopsis for sponsorship for the Barbados book. If you would like to sponsor a double page for say a farmer, just have your corporate office's logo and details within or have an amazing food product or related product (restaurant, hotel) that you wish to go down in the annals of history, please contact me ASAP as I begin to close down this opportunity. This book is also a collector's item, will be going to be judged at the World Cookbook Awards in Paris, and I know will be one that will make Barbados proud and be placed into the annals of history. Naturally it is a big hard-cover visual book and costly to produce, so I am asking to dig deep into your budgets and let me know if there is a bit of sponsorship available. Bless. Do help by sending this information on to any of your contacts.
