ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. ‘ABSENCE – PRESENCE’ Recent paintings by Barbadian artist, Terrence Rupert Piggott. Exhibition runs from January 11th to February 13th, 2014 Gallery NuEdge Fine Arts Ltd is pleased to present, ‘Absence – Presence’, the most recent work of Barbadian artist, Terrence Rupert Piggott. This new body of paintings explores the absence and presence of subject and self. It takes a step back from any representational elements seen in Piggott’s previous ‘Revival’ series and dives into a realm of pure abstraction and spirituality. The ghosts of ‘Revival’ past seem to linger in your mindset as they begin to emerge from the densely worked surfaces built up with layers upon layers of paint. Glimpses of figures seem to shift within the pulsation of striking colour that emerges through the layers; they are absent yet present at the same time. As stated by the artist; “Some of this new work consists of many layers of paint, but instead of discovering and defining forms and shapes like the ‘Revival’ series it has evolved into concealment of any visible subject matter and mundane references and have become, for lack of a better word...pure. 'The Coral Stone Village Meeting' by Unknown artist Each piece which has been positioned and topped with other pieces of coral stone. In rows. The front row close to the sea appear to be 'the elders' as they have a little more space between themselves and the 'people'. Created by an unknown NCC worker, male, who came during the week to Batts Rock Bay and while he cleans he is created these 'meetings' of coral. There were a few others started along the beach but this one had the largest 'crowd'. Sad to report that thuggish vandals have knocked this wonderful installation down.

CARIBBEAN FINE ART FAIR, BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS, MARCH 12TH – 16TH, 2014 Renowned American artist and cultural entrepreneur Danny Simmons will host the 4 th Edition of Caribbean Fine Art (CaFA) Fair – Barbados to be held March 12-16, 2014 at the exciting venue in the heart of historic Bridgetown, Barbados - the Spirit Bond Building. CaFA Fair opens on Wednesday, March 12, 6-9 pm with a Gala Reception featuring a live musical performance, a preview of “Four Bajan Masters” a special exhibition featuring works of art by celebrated Barbadian artists Fielding Babb, Timothy Callender. Clifford Hobbs and Carlton Murrell; and over 35 exhibitors of paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, original limited edition prints and new media exploring the cultural traditions of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora. Another feature of CaFA Fair Barbados 2014 will be “Diaspora Dialogue” an exhibition of works by artists Gabe Diouf – Senegal, JW Ford – USA, Anthony Romaine – USA, Danny Simmons – USA, Ernani Silva – Brazil, TAFA – Ghana, and Willie Torbert – USA. This exhibition will explore the African influence on contemporary Diaspora artistic expression and investigates the position of Caribbean art in the broader Diaspora conversation. A reception will be held on Thursday evening, March 13, from 6.00 pm to celebrate these internationally recognized artists. Danny Simmons will host an evening of spoken word performances by Barbadian artistes and special guest performers on Friday, March 14. Caribbean Art Symposium, scheduled for Saturday, March 15, will focus on the theme “Caribbean Integration and the Cultural Industries”, with two panels drawn from the fields of arts, diplomacy, and government.. CaFA Fair will close on Sunday, March 16 with a Caribbean film presentation and discussion. the Virtual Mapping Project, addresses the lack of available information about Caribbean arts at the formal, informal and educational levels. Fresh Milk sees value in developing a freely accessible, interactive online map of the Caribbean, which will clearly delineate the existing spaces for the arts in the region, from the nineteenth century up to the present time. The region will be mapped to show all arts entities, listed with links to the websites of all the spaces, and maintained to keep all information current. This map will not only be a pivotal information hub and educational tool, but a place to form new bonds and to make connections among practitioners, not only in the Caribbean but worldwide. The Fresh Milk mapping project will be an invaluable resource for students at secondary and tertiary institutions in Barbados, including those studying art at CXC CSEC and CAPE level, BCC Art Associate Degree and BFA programmes, and participants in the BA and MA Cultural Studies and Creative Arts degrees at the EBCCI, UWI Cave Hill Campus. This wealth of knowledge compiled into one easily accessible website means that students can have both historical and current data about Caribbean art at their fingertips, broadening their understanding and keeping up to date with the new, cutting edge work coming out of the region. Additionally, the Virtual Map will create opportunities for artists working in the region today and circulate their works and ideas to a global audience eager to know more about the region's creative arena. Artists will have the chance to form an expansive network, informing them of what spaces - both formal and informal networks - exist in the region and which spaces they can potentially engage with. It opens up endless possibilities for artists, curators, collectors etc. in the Caribbean by giving them much needed exposure, as well as for those internationally, who will gain insight into a whole new market of quality work. Fresh Milk seeks to create a more integrated and connected region by using the arts as a vehicle to create partnerships and build community. Many Caribbean islands have no idea what is happening with their neighbours in the creative arts, which hinders our overall growth in the region. The Virtual Map will promote unity and aid in the building of support systems - whether it be the English, Spanish, French or Dutch speaking Caribbean, we would like to make sure all information is communicated as efficiently as possible, and invite the world to see what is being made and to see the region as a critical space. Fresh Milk is pleased to be the conduit between The Maria Holder Memorial Trust and the artistic community in Barbados and would like to thank them for their support, which allows Fresh Milk to continue supporting our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth and building capacity for artists in both the short and long term. This is why forming relationships with organizations with vested interest in expanding arts and culture becomes pivotal.

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
