BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS

January 2015

Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

JEANNIE TAYLOR Jeannie Taylor was born in England in 1952.She gained her degree at Sheffield School of Art and Design going on to obtain her teaching diploma in Birmingham. She moved to Barbados in 1977 with her Bajan husband and successfully combined raising a family with her career as a jeweller and her passion for painting. Her jewellery and paintings have been acquired by collectors in many countries including, the United Kingdom, USA,Canada,South Africa as well as the Caribbean. As a painter her interest lies in capturing the world around her through portraiture and still life as well as through flamboyant depictions of local cultural events. " With all my paintings I place great emphasis on the design element as well as colour in order that I may achieve a unity of vision. I aim to portray the essence of what I see; to share that experience with those who view my work."

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. ARTHUR ATKINSON Portrait of Goldie Spieler “A lovely lady who was most probably the greatest influence in my becoming a painter. I first met Goldie through The Barbados Arts Council and her Saturday morning paint-outs that they organized in the late 1960’s. Her free technique was an eye opener for me who at the time had never met another painter personally. Goldie has and is making a huge contribution to the arts in Barbados. As an OCA design graduate she came to Barbados from Canada with her young son David. She taught art at a number of schools and became a very active member in the artistic community playing a huge part in the BAC and the sidewalk art shows that were often held at The Bay St Esplanade, Hastings Rocks and Holetown. She became very interested in the Chalky Mount potters and finally, after many trials and tribulations, hard work and perseverance, this interest led to the establishment of Earthworks Pottery at Shop Hill, St Thomas. As they say … “The rest is history”. Goldie. A lady who dances to the beat of her own heart.”

ARIEL LYONS WORKSHOP. Plein air with excitement! February 5, 12, 19, 2015 – three consecutive Thursdays in February. Cost: Bds.$250 per day or Bds $700 for all three days (entrance fees included) To register: Contact Heidi Berger at heidimberger@gmail.com Materials list supplied on registration "Once again join Canadian artist Ariel Lyons on location in three of Barbados’ most visually inspiring and paintable spots. Some painting skills required. Plein air brings you out of the comfort of the studio to really observe natural and man made objects. Rather than working on putting every detail, you will attempt to capture the essence in a more abstract way. Ariel will demonstrate with several different techniques, which will allow you to not only paint the subject but experience a new way of doing it.

When: February 5, 12, 19, 2015 – three consecutive Thursdays in February Cost: Bds.$250 per day or Bds $700 for all three days (entrance fees included) To register: Contact Heidi Berger at heidimberger@gmail.com Materials list supplied on registration Feb 5: Flower Florest —Prepared Surface In Ariel’s words: “I do not like to work on a white canvas so I prepare a surface usually before I start painting. You will do three small canvases of similar subject to see which surface you prefer: complementary colour design, soft molding paste and metal leaf, which will be supplied. These surfaces are prepared at the beginning of the session so no need to prepare ahead”. Feb 12: Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary —Non Absorbent Surface I will give you a piece of yupo to work on. The paint runs around on the surface allowing for some different techniques. You can choose either watercolours or acrylic for this method. I will also show you a gel coating, which gives a similar but different experience. Feb 19: Speightstown— Creating both Real and Simulated Texture Many times when you are painting outside you try to simulate the texture you see to create a realistic appearance on your canvas. I will bring textural materials for you to use. I will also demonstrate taking a small section and enlarging it to create a more abstract view."

KHALIL GOODMAN

KHALIL GOODMAN ‘Still I Rise’ series Silver medal and Prize "Most Promising Black and White" in the 2014 NIFCA exhibit. “This series of photos of my friend and dancer John Hunte was created in 2011 after he had undergone two hips surgeries. We discussed taking photos of him in studio to document his locomotion for a dance he wished to create. It was came a simple idea, but once in studio I realized that the images were powerful. As a dancer John was used to being in full control and fully aware of his body and here he was exploring it anew. It was both invigorating and terrifying. From an aesthetic point of view, I found the biomechanical aspects of the crutches and the scars to be very beautiful and I wanted to be respectful in capturing all of this, and not exploitative. From this collaboration, which is now an ongoing series, we created images that speak of more than John’s individual challenges and his exploration; and speak to a more shared set of experiences.”

Khalil Goodman has been working in Barbados as a photographer since 2006. His commercial photography combines classic lighting and fresh ideas. This combination has won him mass appeal and work in advertising and fashion. His art has been featured in the digital art exhibition"Sign of the Times,” in Barbados in 2008 and the “2014Frames” Photography group exhibit shows running during Glasgow International. When he’s not art directing a new set of images, Khalil spends too much time reading comic books and listening to all the wrong music at the right volume. khalil.goodman@gmail.com +1 (246 243 7848 www.flickr.com/photos/khalilgoodman/

Fresh Milk and Adopt A Stop continue the Fresh Stops collaborative project this month with Versia Harris‘ piece titled ‘At the Side of Something‘. In an attempt to bring art into the public space, six artists were commissioned to produce original artwork for benches that will appear at varied locations around the island. ‘At the Side of Something‘ by Versia Harris has been installed at River Bay St. Fresh Milk and Adopt-a-Stop have entered into a collaborative partnership to bring art into the public space. Fresh Milk has commissioned six young Barbadian artists to produce original art work for benches which will pop up in public spaces around the island between September 2014 and February 2015. Stay tuned for more information as these benches come to a stop near you! For news on the Fresh Milk Books Team, check out their tumblr page here: http://freshmilkbooks.tumblr.com/contributors%20

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. To keep up to date with our other activities, visit: http://www.freshmilkbarbados.com and like our Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/FreshMilkBarbados

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org

MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.
