Inspiration My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivity that is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and “spiritual” character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally…

"We Came on Different Ships" illustrates the uncomfortable issue of enslaved Africans and the Barbadian 'plantocracy' that imported them. Richard Ligon's diary entry on right is pastoral & bountiful. On the left, Olaudah Equitano's diary in Barbados tells of capture and fitful tempest....The tinted faces shout out 44 tribal African groups. The surrounding frame is festooned with gold, gems and chains. The littlle 'pickaninny' with eyes open wide, gives hope of freedoms' future. For Sale:

www.creativecaribbeannetwork.com/page/12799/en www.douxdouxdarlingproductions.com With Dawn Cumberbatch

Reality television has become a worldwide phenomenon and while Trinidad has embarked upon several versions of it over the years, Dawn Cumberbatch and Natacha Jones have teamed up through their Doux Doux Darling production company and developed a 13-part reality series which strictly features aspects of the local mas fraternity. More like sisters than mere friends, Cumberbatch and Jones have created a show where although there are weekly eliminations which are staples of some reality shows, the specifics are very unique. This novel project is called "Get In Yuh Section" and 3Canal's Wendell Manwarren, who is a virtual icon in the local mas and cultural arenas, will serve as a mentor to the designers during the competition. Both ladies consider Manwarren to be nurturing, relatable and one with a wealth of knowledge. Sixteen contestants will be the focus as they are sequestered at a local hotel for just over three months and be expected to participate in weekly challenges where they will need to prove their skills on demand in creativity, determination, motivation and anything else the judges require. Citizens and foreigners of every creed and race participate in Carnival and this cosmopolitan flavour will also be reflected in the cast of contestants. "We're also encouraging the amateurs, the somewhat experienced, the not-so-experienced, the young student, the retiree, whomever, to come on board." Cumberbatch said. "People don't just want to be told about their history, they want to be entertained as well and this show will achieve just that. Listen, designing can be frustrating and people don't realise that." claimed Jones. "We will follow the participants around as they prepare for and execute their various tasks so you're going to be seeing the good, the bad and the ugly." explained Jones. What is so unique about this show is that the aspiring designers won't be called upon to design run-of-the-mill evening gowns or trendy casual attire; their assignments will see them competing with their skills of producing mas costumes. You might think that this is simple but it isn't; there will be challenges within the challenges so to speak. Viewers will be edified as to the process of making carnival costumes – from the choosing of the many types of material to sewing the item and completing it. Continued on next page………………….

So how exactly did this idea manifest itself? Cumberbatch, one of the Directors of Doux Doux Darling Productions (DDDP) who has formally pursued studies in film and television, replied, "I was invited to be a judge for mas while I worked at the Trinidad Theatre Workshop in 2000 and I had a wonderful time during the training just learning about all the traditions, history and techniques of the mas and so on. I judged the children's mas and Dimanche Gras and then Carnival Monday and Tuesday happened and it was like, hmmm‌ I felt that the adult mas got monotonous. It's been 10 years since then and nothing much has changed. I always pondered as to what we as a people can do to encourage a new look in mas. This was just a great way to accomplish something like that." Jones, also a Director of DDDP which was founded three years ago, exuded similar enthusiasm as she spoke. "This is a really exciting project that we started! Dawn and I always try to do something that is community-based and this is local so it belongs to us. We just decided to take the bull by the horns." Seemingly the conservative of the two, Cumberbatch offered, "We've already begun production work which will be included during the run of the show. Obviously, we won't want to give away too much about the show but I will say that this is definitely very different and Natacha and I are so thankful that we've gotten such tremendous support for this undertaking. Many are seeing value in the show." What is at stake for all the potential homesickness, fatigue, stress and pressure that the contenders may experience? The winner of this competition will have the privilege of designing a costume for an entire section of a very popular local mas band! Not a pitiable barter for the time and energy spent during the competition. The effervescent Jones, conversed passionately as she declared, "We always try to do things to empower women and whatever Dawn and I do is also to bring pride to our nation and our people. We can't wait for someone else to do it for us, we have to step up ourselves." Chiming in, Cumberbatch asserted, "We are just about showcasing positive things, quite simply. 'Get In Yuh Section' explores the traditions, history of mas, the unsung heroes." Jones added, "Trinidadians are such creative people but we don't use our imaginations and I think this show will be a vehicle to allow people to think outside the box." The darlings of Doux Doux Darling Productions can be reached via douxdouxdarlingproductions@gmail.com and their website is www.douxdouxdarlingproductions.com . Follow them also on Facebook. Interested candidates can register for the show via getinyuhsection@gmail.com . This pair, the individual trailblazers that they are, has done work which highlighted water conservation, adult literacy, less fortunate children, the problems of the socially displaced, HIV/AIDS and much more so they are quite conscientious in their approach to their field. They feel strongly about defending their culture as much as they do about the social aspects of the land of their birth. "I'm hoping that with the sugar-coating of the reality show type format, we can bring our culture back to the fore." related Cumberbatch. Stay tuned.

Our publisher - Toute Bagai Publishing (TBP). TBP is the first publishing house in the Caribbean to produce internationally distributed magazines showcasing Caribbean living. TBP was formed in 1999 with signature magazine MACO Caribbean Living. Dalton franchise). TBP went on to produce three new publications all in the space of one year in 2005; MACO Destinations, MACO Design Sourcebook, and MACO Caribbean Homes, a collector's edition of the magazine's best. The company also produced numerous guest publications for other companies with resounding success. Awards TBP and Colour Innovations were highly noted at the 2004 Premier Print Awards for MACO Magazine Volume 6, Issue 1, and received the Gold and Silver awards at the 31 st Annual International Gallery of Superb Printing Awards in 2005 for MACO Destinations, Volume 1 Issue 1, and MACO Magazine Volume 6 Issue 3, respectively. TBP has garnered worldwide renown for its low-key, yet distinctive style, attention to detail, and passion for the craft.
