BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS
January 2012
Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events January 2012 This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. R.I.P. NORMA TALMA 1936-2011
NORMA TALMA
THE ART OF NORMA TALMA By L. L. Hutchinson Norma Talma is a lady who has quietly influenced and guided the art world of Barbados for nearly four decades. Her record of work in the administration of the culture of art in Barbados is exhausting just to look at. There is an impressive list of roles as founding member, president, vice president, chairperson, member and advisor of more committees, galleries and organizations than many of us are probably aware of. Some of these included her own Talma Mill Gallery, CARIFESTA, the National Art Gallery Committee, the Art Collection Foundation, now the Barbados Gallery of Art, Queens Park Gallery, International Council of Museums (ICOM), Assoc of Art Teachers, Barbados Arts Council, National Cultural Foundation, Very Special Arts, IDC, and National Cultural Foundation. All of this and she still found time to create magnificent pieces of art, teach and raise a family of three energetic, creative children. Now young adults, they are all highly motivated and successful in their chosen fields. Norma considers them to be her greatest achievement. She has always balanced administrative work, her art and her family with aplomb, a positive attitude and loads of energy. Norma relocated to Barbados from her native New York in 1962 after having met and married local dentist, Dr Trevor Talma. Away from the trendy NY scene and all external influences, she was able to develop more of her own style of artistic expression. She was completely enchanted by the island, the people, the land and sea and especially the sun, which dominates many of her early works. Later she became more sensitized to the sky and the subtle seasonal changes. The artist creates from nothing something - an empty canvas pleads colour, the energy of an idea, of a dream. The vision of unseen realities soon takes shape, manifests in form. The creative instinct of the consummate artist will always find avenue for expression. And if there is no avenue? Well if the artist is Norma Talma - create one. From the ‘60s Norma was diligently and determinedly instrumental in forming an artistic environment for fellow artists. The dichotomy of organizational and administrative skills together with a visionary, innovative spirit has been a great blessing to Barbados. Continued on next page
Though her artistic output may have been slightly hindered due to her administrative activities and work as a teacher, her progress as an artist has been continual. From the 1960s to present she has participated in more than 20 major exhibitions here and internationally and received 5 awards of recognition for her work. In the ‘80s she discovered paper - the art of papermaking and the concept of the sculptural collage. Her art, her world was transformed, there was no turning back; she had found her thing! Since then, these amazing ‘paperartworks’ have become her signature style and a truly authentic medium of expression. This shift from paint to paper allowed her to refresh her language and translate thoughts, feelings and ecological scenarios, into natural, organic ‘paperscapes’. In the light and shade created by the relief in the collages, we see a different variation of tone; careful constructs delicately layered. Paint, she felt, hemmed her in, paper freed her to explore the light and lighten up as her work became less flat and more sculptured. Like stripping away layers of dross and grossness, the artist explores and discovers personal authenticity; re-layering and recreating self, redefining reality, reinventing expression - the soul is validated. “Each piece is a world unto itself. Each is conceived and crafted according to the dictates of its own individuality. However to be successful, its structure still conforms to design elements and principles: the colours, the texture, the shapes are balanced, consistent, harmonious and at the same time remain unique and individual. So in her life Norma seems to follow the same route of creativity within the bounds of the practical, the realistic and the effective. Her commitment to creativity can be seen in the process and progress of her art and in the strong organizations she has founded and helped to manage. And always there is her recognition of the need for structure, intelligent control and discipline behind the creative flair.” [Hugh Corbin]. A lifetime of selfless dedication to the development of the arts is acknowledged by the Collectors Club and people of Barbados.

NORMA TALMA
Remembrance of Norma Talma by Janice Whittle I write in a spirit of great sadness having learnt today of the death of Norma Talma. I became very fond of Norma when I was curator of her Lifetime Achievement Award retrospective exhibition. She was such a lovely person, who worked very hard for the development of Art in Barbados. She dared to work differently sharing an original perspective with us. Norma's own work was an act of love where she even made her own materials. The work was essentially non-representational and moving in a more three-dimensional, relief direction, which we wondered where it would take her. She had a large dream of Barbados having a National Gallery and she was a member of the National Art Gallery Committee for the duration of the existence of the Gallery. She had worked towards this dream her whole working life in Barbados. Through the Art Collection Foundation and later the Barbados Gallery of Art, she was instrumental in the acquisition of outstanding works of Art which would become part of the National Collection. She was a member of the Board of the National Cultural Foundation; along with Denyse Menard-Greenidge, she worked towards the establishment of the Queen's Park Gallery, which was the initiative of the Director of the Foundation Elombe Mottley. The Talma Mill Gallery, which Norma opened at her home, displayed many outstanding works of art by the leading Artists in Barbados. Artists in the 1980's were a community in a way that they are not today. Norma chaired the Visual Arts Committee of CARIFESTA 1981; the mural project, the Caribbean Masters' exhibitions, various country exhibitions. Out of the CARIFESTA experience came many developments in the Visual Arts in Barbados. As an Art teacher, she was influential as a colleague and teacher. Norma was a hard worker who always spoke the truth as she saw it.Those positions were not always popular, but she retained her integrity in the committees\ organizations she served. Her last comment in the local press was a call for a National Gallery. I last saw her at the Opening of Goldie Spieler's retrospective in August. She was in good spirits. Wayne Simmons, the Corporate Communications Specialist of the NCF, took a photograph of Joyce Daniel, Stella, Lady St John and Goldie ; These three distinguished Barbadian Artists, along with Norma Talma, were the first Barbadians to participate in the prestigous Sao Paulo Bienal. Unfortunately Norma left before the photograph could be taken. Whether one was in agreement with Norma's positions regarding her work in the Visual Arts, her presence, passion and compassion will be missed. Love and condolences to her family. Rest in Peace Norma.
NORMA TALMA
Remembrance of Norma Talma by Dr John Webster It was with great sadness that I learned earlier today of the passing of one of the true Icons of the local art community, Norma Talma. Norma passed through the light yesterday 8th December 2011, after an extended and valiant battle with cancer. I never got to know her truly personally but always, from my early teen years, knew of her and her unique and outstanding work based on her own handmade papers and developed great respect for her talent in this area. She was the Owner and Manager of Talma Mill Art Gallery and Studio located at Enterprise, Christ Church. In 2004 she was honoured with her Lifetime Achievement Award Exhibition. Grand Salle, Central bank of Barbados She had a great showing at what I believe was her last show, "Phoenix - An Exhibition of Paperworks" held at Aweipo Gallery, The Crane from March 20 - April 6th 2010. I was privileged to acquire her Signature piece of this show, "Mother Earth", which I shall truly treasure. The exhibition was an exploration of paper as an art medium. The collection included several sculptural collages as well as linocuts printed on paper paintings. The themes were: the patterns of nature series, the Phoenix series and the Amerindian series which represent the creation and continuity of life. The photos in this photo album, presented as a tribute to Norma, are a selection taken on the opening night of Phoenix. You may also like to view the following YouTube video on "Phoenix", created by Aweipo Gallery, which serves as a wonderful tribute to Norma as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJeZ0Wz3Tls&feature=player_embedded The following is her artist statement, made June 2010, and taken from her website ( http://www.normatalma.com/index.htm): which truly summarises, in her own words, just what Norma stood for in her art and I could not have said it better. We will all miss Norma Talma and her wonderful and unique creations. You may also like to view this YouTube video created by Corrie Scott of Norma Talma's PaperArt: http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U31X7YPEyg&feature=player_embedded To her family I extend my sincere condolences and those of the entire Art Community of Barbados. May she Rest in Peace.

NORMA TALMA
NORMA TALMA Artist Statement, June 2010 I love paper. I make handmade paper collages, print linocuts and draw on these "Paper Paintings". I create paper collages using handmade paper that has been poured, shaped, embedded, colored, textured, printed and layered, often becoming sculptural. Each edition of the linocuts and the drawings are on "paper paintings" making each one different and unique. Most of my handmade paper is made from indigenous fibers such as banana-leaf stems, wild cotton and corn husks. But, more importantly, the paper is simply a vehicle to express my feelings and thoughts. My observations of the changing landscape and the natural environment serve as a microscopic study for human existence, the dynamics of color, line, texture, form and rhythm present an opportunity to make statements about my psychological and spiritual life. They are paper poems that speak of the beginnings of life and the passages of time, incorporating autobiographical iconography and images of Amerindian and other early civilizations. Biblical, geological and space travel discoveries have also informed my art work. These themes have evolved from my initial and ongoing reaction to and fascination with the tropical sun and landscape, and through extensive explorations of space, light and time in the Caribbean. My color palette ranges from vibrant brilliant colors to more subtle earth tones.

The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression. OBJECTIVES of the NCF are: To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry Rodney Ifill, Cultural Officer Visual Arts 424-0909 ext.234 rodney-ifill@ncf.bb www.ncf.bb Annette Nias Cultural Officer - Film and Photography 424-0909 Ext 238 annette-nias@ncf.bb

BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/

ROSEMARY PARKINSON www.rosemary-parkinson.com
My website - www.rosemaryparkinson.com in-shop is offering two e-books - Shake Dat Cocktail (a trip around the islands on cocktails) and Cocktails & Hors D' Oeuvres with myself and the late Grand Dame of Caribbean Cuisine Chef Norma Shirley. Both make great presents. Nyam Jamaica is on special for Christmas at US$140 including shipping. Those living in Barbados can order through me direct for BDS$150 signed. In Jamaica, of course, the book is carried by most bookstores. If you are visiting Devon House, Grogg Shop has them and whilst you are there, do enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. Norma Shirley's spirit lives on. On NBC's morning show as one of the best picks for 2008/9 as Christmas presents, Nyam Jamaica makes an incredible corporate gift as it is not just a cookbook but a culinary tour that includes history, traditions and culture, meeting the people from parish to parish. It can be used from Primary to University level as an educational book and is in the hands of several international Chefs and, therefore, not only useful for a hotel or restaurant but also for culinary schools/colleges/universities. A collector's item, there are few left and there will be no more hard copies once the original stock of 6,000 copies is finished (see website for details and download for free the sponsorship proposal to learn more). NEWS RE BARBADOS BOOK: The Barbados book - Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n - goes to the designers on January 16th and this is good news especially for me as I believe it is time to put this book to rest from my computer and have the world see it. We are going for GOLD in Paris again. Endorsed by the late Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson; by Mia Mottley and the Inter-American Institute for CoOperation in Agriculture - Barbados - with comments from international Chef Art Smith (Oprah's personal Chef), writer/author Barbadian Elombe Mottley (Jamaica), playright/author/artist Trinidadian Lennox Raphael (Denmark) and others, this book is carded to hit the world like a good refreshing storm! On my website you will also find under Downloads, a synopsis for sponsorship for the Barbados book. If you would like to sponsor a double page for say a farmer, just have your corporate office's logo and details within or have an amazing food product or related product (restaurant, hotel) that you wish to go down in the annals of history, please contact me ASAP as I begin to close down this opportunity. This book is also a collector's item, will be going to be judged at the World Cookbook Awards in Paris, and I know will be one that will make Barbados proud and be placed into the annals of history. Naturally it is a big hard-cover visual book and costly to produce, so I am asking to dig deep into your budgets and let me know if there is a bit of sponsorship available. Bless. Do help by sending this information on to any of your contacts. I can be contacted at rosemaryparkinson2004@yahoo.com Have a wonderful, blessed and prosperous rest of the year, Love and light, Rosemary www.rosemary-parkinson.com

On Wednesday October 26 , 2011, an historical event took place at around 4:45pm in the evening the Grand Unveiling of the Hastings Mural
“When first considered as a project over a year ago, the concept of installing a mural was one that was highly regarded among the board of the Future Centre Trust and by extension its funders at the time, which was the Tourism Development Corporation. The Corporation saw the relevance to their goals of continuing to add to the Tourism product while assisting the country’s natural environment. The concept was one that of course needed to be approved by the relevant authorities, those being the National Conservation Commission and the Coastal Zone Management Unit both under the Ministry of Environment and Drainage. Both agencies approved the use of the wall, and of course we are so very grateful. The support of the TDC, which thankfully was held over into 2011, provided the basis for the FCT to then approach other partners to the project which was focused on South Coast businesses. From those who were directly invited, we now have the following financial partners to this wonderful initiative: Sponsor: Tourism Development Corporation (TDC) Gold Partners: KPMG and Barbados Fertility Centre and Silver Partners: Blakeys Bar and Restaurant, Art Splash Cafe and Tapas Restaurant We are also proud to include in this project, our long time supporters, the BL&PC. We then engaged the Barbados Sea Turtle Project through Dr Julia Horrocks to provide the information which is now included in the mural for the information of users to the area. We thank Dr Horrocks for her contribution. Mr David Spieler, a fellow Board member of the FCT was the designer for the mural and assisted greatly by managing the day to day installation of the mural, making the various plaques of turtles in the design and of course contributing a large amount of reused material to the design itself. Mr Ansil 'Rusty' Williams was the tiler on the project and did a magnificent job, to which you will agree I am sure! The FCT focuses on education and action, with this project no exception. This education will be learned through many ways: · Through its relevance to environment – physical both through the presence of the mural, and the biodiversity the mural seeks to assist, · Through the relationship of social interactions and contributions as is seen by one of our funders in the Barbados Fertility Centre; · And of course through the economic environment – in the way of visitors to the island, partners to the project and the general increased awareness of attractions and beauty on the South Coast; · It has a distinct relevance to Tourism – providing the area with a pleasant and informative attraction for visitors to Barbados and the area. It is already being used as a popular photo spot and has contributed to Barbados' tourism offerings. This is a great symbol of Barbados moving forward with its goals of a Green Economy for our visitors; · The mural is an educational and beautiful use of space; · It is already being used as an educational tool and has great applications to particularly primary aged children in this regard; · The mural highlights facts related to the hawksbill turtle which is endangered, with Barbados being an ideal nesting ground; · The mural was designed to educate and provide basic information to contact the Sea Turtle hotline when turtles and/or eggs are seen; Overall I think you would agree that this installation has many, many benefits. It is beautifully educational and is a project that all at the FCT are very proud of and we are grateful to be given this opportunity to enhance our environment in this way.” Speech by Chaiman of The Future Centre Trust Vivian-Anne Gittens

The Caribbean Sea will from May 1st, 2011 be designated a "Special Area" under provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), a senior Barbados government minister has said." This means from that date the disposal of garbage and other pollutants in the wider Caribbean Sea is strictly prohibited, except in cases where it is processed in accordance with Annex V," International Transport Minister George Hutson said as the region gets ready to join the international community in observing World Maritime Day today.
