BARBADOS ARTS BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS EVENTS
JULY JULY2014 2014
Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. BILL GRACE 1953- 2014
THINGS THAT MATTER: A Tribute to Bill Grace – Cultural Icon, National Treasure Henry S. Fraser Barbados has lost a cultural icon and national treasure, in the words of the local art community. Artist, sculptor, studio potter, musician, environmentalist, teacher and more – Bill Grace was a remarkable man in every way. Tragically, his brilliant creative life was cut short on Friday morning, June 13th, at the youthful age of 61, in Ashkelon, Israel, where he has been living with his wife Shuah and children for the past few years. He succumbed after a courageous six month battle with malignant melanoma. William (Bill) Denis Grace was born on March 23rd, 1953 and baptised at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. He was the son of John and Katie Grace. In his gentle, kind personality he emulated his father, who led the Diabetes Association of Barbados for many years. His passion for art and creativity came from his mother, a fine artist in her own right. Bill went to Montessori and prep school at the Ursuline Convent and then on to Presentation College at Verdun. He attended Acadia University and aced his year abroad, studying in Spanish at the University of Valencia in Spain. He graduated with Honours in Arts, including sociology and architecture. He started potting in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, when his sister Wendy brought him a lump of clay from a pottery course she was attending. He hand-made a beautiful bowl and simply kept on potting after that, attending the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design in 1978. About that time he was diagnosed with melanoma on his face, had it removed and began a macrobiotic diet; melanoma never bothered him again until January.
He decided to become a potter and went to San Francisco to apprentice with John Reeve, who had trained with Bernard Leach, who in turn trained with Japanese “living treasure” master potter Urano Shigekichi (1851-1923), Kenzan 6th in the tradition of potter Ogata Kenzan (1663 -1743). Bill hugely valued this revered, centuries-old artistic ancestry and the Japanese influences in his work. He was the consummate creator, playing the guitar from the age of 12; he was interested in classical guitar and played beautifully. He played many instruments, including the piano and a small stringed instrument he made himself that he called a mandochinni. He returned to Barbados, his eternal muse – to the sea and coral reefs, his inspiration - to pot, to sculpt and to paint, making a name for himself and exhibiting widely. In the words of Therese Hadchity: “His work and his life were about finding a centre, creating balance, making sense of chaos. This resoundingly hopeful, ever re-affirmed positive approach to the world permeated everything he did … Without exception, his works are meditations on the cosmos, on energy, on man’s connection with the earth, on the moment of convergence between nature and culture. Above all, they are evocations of his love of the world. Like music, they speak directly to the senses, leaving no one behind.” Bill moved back to Barbados and set up his studio and kiln, and his work evolved over the years, from wide ranging and creative studio pottery – both classic and modern forms – to sculpture, and one of his fascinations was mobiles. His glazes were brilliant, his mandalas were inspiring and he developed a passion for working in local coral stone. One of the finest now graces a conference room in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the Cave Hill Campus, UWI.
Bill exhibited widely in Barbados, the USA and later in Israel, and his work has been eloquently praised. “Bill Grace is a sensitive artist, with creative imagination, persistence, intensity and integrity”, said John Reeve, Master Potter. In my own introduction to the catalogue for his first “sell-out” Queen’s Park one man show, I wrote: “As vibrant and powerful as any sculpture, inspired by Barbadian roots and the environment.” Bill was a really good man in every sense of the word.... one of the finest people I have ever known .... almost saint-like in his desire to do the right thing, both for others as individuals and for the world, on the most intrinsic of life principles and codes of ethics ... not just living the Golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, but doing good unto others regardless, and seeking no reward. And since we met some 30 plus years ago, he has been like a kid brother to me … his work is in every room of our home. Words of appreciation and loss are pouring in on Facebook, and as artist Heidi Berger said: “He was a great artist, teacher, mentor and human being. The world will be emptier without him, but his work will continue to sing his message "We are one".” Bill taught at the Barbados Community College, at Skidmore College in New York and more recently in Ashkalon, Israel. Bill and Shuah got married in Barbados, in the Barbados Museum courtyard. They have three children, Sean, Paz and Shara. The family has lived in both Barbados and Israel. He has inspired so many students, friends, collectors and admirers – and we all extend our deepest sympathy to Shuah and family and pray for strength and inspiration in their lives. Professor Fraser is past Dean of Medical Sciences, UWI and Professor Emeritus of Medicine. Website: profhenryfraser.com

'The Coral Stone Village Meeting' by Unknown artist Each piece which has been positioned and topped with other pieces of coral stone. In rows. The front row close to the sea appear to be 'the elders' as they have a little more space between themselves and the 'people'. Created by an unknown NCC worker, male, who came during the week to Batts Rock Bay and while he cleans he is created these 'meetings' of coral. There were a few others started along the beach but this one had the largest 'crowd'.

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org
MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs.
