BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS

JULY 2015

Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. ONLY IN OUR IMAGINATION Under instruction from The Governing Body, The Neighbourhood Tourism Authority produced a series of posters to advertise The Neighbourhood as a viable tourist destination. Titled "Only in Our Imagination", the project enlisted the help of a few Neighbourhood residents, who dutifully attempted to play their part in aid of the greater good. While it must have been seen as an obvious move and a lucrative opportunity, the effectiveness of the initiative remains unmeasured. However, there is evidence that suggests at least some interest was expressed (see letter). Replicas of these posters (English and Spanish versions) were on display at the 2015 Havana Biennial. Perhaps this will result in renewed interest in The Neighbourhood. Ewan Atkinson

FINE ART PORTRAITS & DRAWINGS BY KHARY DARBY

“Throughout

history, artists have focused on the human face as a means of capturing the essence of an identity. This tradition continues today. A portrait is a unique way to commemorate a life, a memory or an achievement.

kharydarby@gmail.com 572-0579 or 282-3302 https://www.facebook.com/kharydarbyartist

I have been trained in the traditions and techniques of the masters and would like to offer patrons the opportunity to commission their very own fine art portrait drawing or oil painting.

"Your books are historical documents that will be appreciated for many, many years - over a 100 years. You are the only one that, in your part of the world, has created a record of the cuisine of the region. Your cookbooks are for future generations, without you there would not be any record of this wonderful melting pot with its violent past that has mellowed into a beautiful island welcome. Great art comes from great pain. Food is art and writing of it brings art to the people. Without the written word it's lost only a memory and faint taste of the past." Chef Art Smith on receipt of his copy of Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n. An award-winning author, restaurateur, contributor to 'O' (The Oprah Magazine) who until 2007 was the personal chef to Oprah Winfrey, Chef Art is not only the founder of the non-profit charity Common Threads that brings low-income families together through food and art, but also runs several award-winning restaurants in the US.Chef also owns Culinaria:The Caribbean ("my Bible to Caribbean cuisine") and Nyam Jamaica.

At Gourmand World Cook Book Awards held in Yantai, China, June 9 th, 2015, BARBADOS BU'N-BU'N has won “Best in the world self published book”. Having received 4 Gourmand Awards for Barbados earlier this year BEST PHOTOGRAPHY, BEST DESIGN, BEST HISTORIC RECIPES and BEST SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK BARBADOS BU'N- BU'N then went on to the shortlist for best in the world under the category of self publisjed books. Some 250 countries entered their books in this prestigious award.

“The day I took the photo that would ultimately be my choice for front cover of Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n, Denise Layne was sitting quietly surrounded by produce and had her brightly coloured umbrella right next to her - a picture of glorious colour outside what I call 'my' building in Speightstown. Up for sale, it has been my dream to win the lotto, buy the property, open a cafe/gallery and live upstairs in what I would convert into studio and living quarters. I asked her if I could take the photo explaining as I always do what I was going to do with it. She made no fuss. Just immediately put on her shades and gave me that 'vendor-look' that simply denotes 'Barbados". Denise was thrilled on Friday when I finally delivered a copy of the now-award winning book promised for so long, and said "Cyan' wait to get home. I gine read this from cover to cover. Promise." She was thrilled and very congratulatory when I told her Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n had won "Best in The World - Self Published Book" Rosemary Parkinson

Barbados Bu’n Bu’n’s the Best!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2015

It’s simply the best! No further explanation needed. And this was confirmed at the conclusion of the Gourmand World Awards event when Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n took the title of the Best Self-published Book in the World! Author Rosemary Parkinson shared the news of this triumph on Tuesday June 9, 2015 where winners were announced in Yantai, China. Barbados Bu’n Bu’n is more than a book. It is two volumes of history, culture and cuisine packaged in a tome of vibrant photography, enthralling stories and tantalizing recipes that reflect all things Barbadian. And who is Rosemary Parkinson? She is an entrepreneur extraordinaire. Rosemary Parkinson has delved into more businesses than she cares to remember ‒ from executive bilingual secretary to waitress to fashion buyer and designer, graphic artist, visual artist, photographer and now author. Her nomadic life has seen her living in England, Germany, Canada, Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados. She is also an artist, having exhibited in the Caribbean and Europe but has devoted her life to writing, lecturing and consulting on anything to do with the importance of Caribbean food. Her latest work, Barbados Bu’n Bu’n, the third in the Culinary Travel Series by Parkinson, is hailed as a national treasure and is searing its way into the hearts of many across the globe. Barbados Bu'n Bu'n was judged with over 2 600 similar publications from 205 countries and at the end of it, stole the show with four Gourmand International awards for Historical Recipes, Design, Cookbook of the Year and Best Self Published Book. This propelled it into selections for the Best in the World Award, hosted as part of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2015. Having been selected as the winner from Barbados, Parkinson’s work competed against others in the same category from Canada, Denmark, Gibraltar and the USA for the coveted Best in the World title. Parkinson expects Barbados Bu’n Bu’n will increase the demand for ‘locally-grown’ foods, including processed items, in the local and international markets and is pushing too for a revival of the back-yard garden hoping the book will inspire healthy eating, wellness, eco-sustainability and organics. The BIDC is working with this author in marketing the Culinary Travel Series as part of its thrust to develop the new product and service niches in the Creative Industries. Barbados Bu’n Bu’n is currently being retailed locally at the Gallery at Artsplash, Hastings; Cloister Bookstore (Sheraton, the Dome, Warrens & Bridgetown); The Chattel House in Sky Mall; Barbados Golf Club Pro Shop, Durants; Walker's World, Dover; George Washington House Restaurant, The Garrison; Seasplash Farmers Market, Hastings; Holders Farmers' Market at Holders; Greenwich Farms & Antiques, St. James; Sandy Lane Pro Golf Shop, St. James); Relish, Limegrove Lifestyle Centre and the University Bookshop, UWI Cave Hill. Signed copies are also available for local and international purchase directly from the author. http://www.bidc.org/articles/barbados-bun-buns-best

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs.
