BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS
July 2016
Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

ARTIST PANEL Gallery NuEdge Fine Arts Ltd is pleased to announce an artist panel as part of the upcoming programme for 'Quaternary: Four Barbadian Female Artists', an exhibition of contemporary works by local artists Llanor Alleyne, Versia Harris, Katherine Kennedy and Sheena Rose. This artist panel will be moderated by writers Naomi Jackson and Amanda Haynes, with a lens on the relationship between visual arts and literature. This is a chance to hear the four participating artists discuss their practice, and how each also connects to writing – some even directly with the moderators – to generate discourse around the intersectional elements of creativity in the arts. This panel is open and free to the public, and will be held at Gallery NuEdge on Wednesday, July 20th from 6-8pm. For more information and to RSVP, please call (246) 621 0067

An exhibition of Mahogany Sculpture by Wayne Onkphra Wells Seaglass and Found Objects Jewellery by Andrea Wells. Curated by Israel Mapp with assistance from Sandrine Hagui. The Heart of the Matter By Lilian Sten-Nicholson AICA “I am always amazed what the wood has crafted through my hands.” Onkphra Wells As you step out of the bright heat of the ‘concrete grove’ that is the Pelican Craft Centre into the cool stillness of the ‘Artforms’ Gallery, you are met with a soft rustle of palm fronds, a whisper of ‘Woman Tongue’ and dappled sun-light filtered through textured, high relief window shades. Pulsing, multi- coloured spotlights define, enhance and distort the swirling organic forms of Onkphra’s carvings, creating a kind of ‘now -you-see-me-now-you-don’t” effect of a clearing in the forest. We are accustomed to seeing paintings on walls and sculptures on pedestals, positioned with various degrees of perfection, yet ordered according to long established practice. The “Enchanted Forest” breaks with this tradition and presents the work as an integral part of the display, rater than as stand- alone focal points. The rambling , split-level layout of the show encourages exploration and personalmeditation. ‘Still I Rise” greets you at the entrance to a winding path, which leads you past “In the Deep”, a work which appears to dance to its own drum and a group of three joined figures “ Anchor my Soul”, a reminder that the Ancient Egyptian Holy Trinity was ‘Father-Mother-Child’, not ‘Father–Son-Holy Ghost’. “Joy cometh in the Morning’ and “ Bonjour Mon Cheri” are imbued with a loving glow. So is the procession of small works leading to a bed of river stones surrounding ‘Mask V’ and the exquisite Seaglass Jewelry of Andrea Wells.
The exhibition is centered by ‘Eye of the Storm’ a large work created from a Mahogany root stock, originally formed by holding its ground through hurricane and drought, in good times and bad for centuries. It holds, in its gnarled grip, a small limestone rock, slightly off center, yet, “The Eye of the Storm’. “Mahogany Symphonies I and II “ together with “Chillin” and “Diver” reinforce the feeling of ‘seeing sound’, as a famous Jazz Musician once said: ”Sound can be heard, but seldom seen. Except by musicians”. Onkphra is a Musician as well as an Artist, Priest and Community Activist . His journey led him from a childhood in Arima, in the foothills of Trinidad’s Northern Range, where forest and streams were his early playgrounds, through QRC and Ryerson, to Barbados in 1979. Trained in community relations and social services, he developed a niche within the arts, which includes community workshops, live performances and the use of the ‘Artforms‘ Gallery as multipurpose meeting space. The ‘Artforms’ Gallery is a small space with a big heart. ‘Onkphra does not believe, that life should be boxed into little compartments. To prove this, even the boxes that he makes from salvaged Mahogany, spill over defined boundaries, turn in on themselves and open up in the most surprising ways. As an artist he approaches his tools and material with reverence, “different grains have different movements some will cooperate-some will not”. This philosophy is also evident in other areas of his life. Onkphra’s work is centered in his heart, in his love of music and life itself. His sculptures are not mobiles, but they possess the energy of ecstatic dance. The ‘heart of the matter’ is love. Lilian Sten-Nicholson lilian.sten@gmail.com

Behind the TOOM Set Design With Versia Abeda Harris
GAP Theatre Talks to Artist Versia Harris about the set design for Tales of an Obeah Man… GAP: What was your role in the set design for TOOM? Versia: I worked very closely with the production’s Director Russell Watson to create the images seen in ‘Tales of an Obeah Man’. As the Director of the production, he had a vey clear vision of what he wanted the visual backdrop to look like and how it would connect with the action going on in front of it. For me, it was just about trying my best to capture and translate the environments, necessary for the play, into drawings. GAP: What did the process involve? Versia: We took some resource photos of the Barbadian forests and home interiors to have a clear idea. I would draw from these photos and scan the drawings into the computer where they would be edited, coloured and composited as the “scene” in photoshop. This would then be handed over to Russell for him to animate or move based on what was happening with the actors. GAP: What was the inspiration for the artwork? Versia: The time frame of the play is set in the 90s, so the images drawn had to reflect that. For example, the old Glendary prison was still in operation at the time, therefore the prison scene had that as a backdrop. The drawings also had to capture this unique space; they had to be, according to Russell, of something that felt like the dense forests of St. John. They needed to include things that spoke to the story like plants that are medicinal in some way, which then connected with the idea of the obeah man being a “medicine man” and not the stereotypical witch doctor that he is made out to be.
GAP: What was it like creating for the stage? Versia: I always have an internal conflict about how my work functions within the gallery context. There seems to be this passivity that occurs when viewers are just meant to stand at a distance and stare at an image or projection on a wall. The gallery space creates this kind of reverence about the work that discourages viewers from engaging with it the way they would if the image were in a home, office, side of a building or screen in an elevator. In saying that, I do enjoy showing in the gallery space because it is a controlled area where the focus is put solely on the art. However, it is always interesting to see how the work operates outside of it and how the uncontrolled environment relates to or interacts with it. Within the context of theatre, my drawings were the secondary focus of the production but it interacted with a multiplicity of other things happening in that space: it set the context for the actors and the vibrancy of the projections was dependent on/manipulated by the stage lighting. Though not in a gallery, the audience did ‘sit’ at a distance to view, as it was shown in The Cove, a nightclub in St. Lawrence Gap covered to a theatre space. Of course all theatre productions are not the same and so the context would shift accordingly, but this particular show created a new lens through which to see and think about the functionality of my work.

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. To keep up to date with our other activities, visit: http://www.freshmilkbarbados.com and like our Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/FreshMilkBarbados

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org
MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.
