ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. RODNEY IFILL
A Painter, aspiring visual artist, filmmaker and cartoonist, Rodney has been employed at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) since 1997. He served an initial term as a Gallery Attendant before being appointed to the post of Cultural Officer-Visual Arts. He is Past Vice President, Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the National Committee of ICOM Barbados - a museum and heritage organization. Rodney was previously employed at DaCosta Mannings as an Assistant Interior Decorator, in the design and display department. He was responsible for winning this department a first prize, in a national Gondola design competition. He has also contributed to the Barbados Advocate’s Hype Magazine and The Investigator during the mid 1990s with numerous comic strips, and in particular the comic strip entitled Buddies. He has successfully completed his studies in the area of Creative Arts, Graduating with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts Degree with Cultural Studies (Hons.) from the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. To date he has directed five (5) student films: The Blind Swindler, Shirley Valentine, The Golden Brushes, Freedom Is and The Artist. He has also earned a Certificate in Museum Studies from the Canadian Association of Museums (CAM) International programme during a period of internship at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society from 2000 to 2002. hotrodsri@yahoo.com

CHRISTOPHER WHITTER Christopher Whitter- 18 year old Digital Illustrator and Traditional artist from Jamaica. Christopher attended the Maryland All Age school in Hanover, then moved on to Herbert Morrisson Technical High. Now the artist is finishing up his art education at the Edna Manley College of Art. His work has mainly surreal and abstract themes, and the artist has a knack for using a colorful palette. FRESH MILK XII The Milking Parlour Studio, Walkers Dairy, St. George June 20th 7-8.30pm "Boston to Barbados - Creative Collaboration Through Music and Identity" Fresh Milk is pleased to welcome Shea Rose and Sasha Link to the platform as visiting resident artists from Boston, USA during the month of June. Shea is a recording artist, singer songwriter and music for social change activist, performing and writing in the genres of Soul/Rock/Hip-Hop/Jazz and Spoken word. Her Fresh Milk residency project will see her investigating and exploring her identity and family lineage with the aim of creating a sound installation exploring home, identity and self-acceptance. Her goal is to create and perform three musical compositions around these themes using voice/guitar/percussion (singing/spoken word/rap), interactions, conversations and experiences that Shea encounters during her time in Barbados. The compositions will be accompanied by a visual component. Shea is hoping to collaborate with artists/musicians/spoken word artists/dancers from Barbados on this project. Accompanying Shea will be Sasha Link, a nonfiction creative writer and photographer. In addition to producing a photographic series on her residency, Sasha will be offering creative writing and spoken word workshops to students at Workmans Primary School and St. Gabriel's School. Come out to Fresh Milk to see the results of these collaborative residency experiences on Thursday June 20th. The event is free and open to the public.

It is our duty as creatives to introduce our children to collecting original art. Art sparks their imagination, stories can be told from them about the subject, children can use their imagination to create their own stories or name the characters painted to make them their own. Children should also learn that appreciating art is a way of saving money...it is an investment. A painting does not lose value. I love to create Caribbean Children's art for all ages. I paint in acrylic on canvas in whatever size required. Hung separately or in panels that match together, they make wonderful visions for children. Murals for children are also special creating a wonderland in their bedroom or playroom. Consultations on your special requirements are by appointment.

The NationalCultural Foundation (NCF) will be holding its annual Central Bank of Barbados sponsored Crop Over Visual Arts Festival. This year will commemorate the 40thanniversary of The Arrivants,an anthology of poetry by Edward Kamau Brathwaite, published in 1973. It is called A New World Trilogy and is made up of the collections Rights Of Passage, Islands and Masks. The poems speak to, among other things, the author’s poetic theses on Afro Caribbean identities. Brathwaite was born in Barbados in 1930. He was educated in England at Cambridge and has taught in Ghana, Jamaica, the United States and Barbados

MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

the Virtual Mapping Project, addresses the lack of available information about Caribbean arts at the formal, informal and educational levels. Fresh Milk sees value in developing a freely accessible, interactive online map of the Caribbean, which will clearly delineate the existing spaces for the arts in the region, from the nineteenth century up to the present time. The region will be mapped to show all arts entities, listed with links to the websites of all the spaces, and maintained to keep all information current. This map will not only be a pivotal information hub and educational tool, but a place to form new bonds and to make connections among practitioners, not only in the Caribbean but worldwide. The Fresh Milk mapping project will be an invaluable resource for students at secondary and tertiary institutions in Barbados, including those studying art at CXC CSEC and CAPE level, BCC Art Associate Degree and BFA programmes, and participants in the BA and MA Cultural Studies and Creative Arts degrees at the EBCCI, UWI Cave Hill Campus. This wealth of knowledge compiled into one easily accessible website means that students can have both historical and current data about Caribbean art at their fingertips, broadening their understanding and keeping up to date with the new, cutting edge work coming out of the region. Additionally, the Virtual Map will create opportunities for artists working in the region today and circulate their works and ideas to a global audience eager to know more about the region's creative arena. Artists will have the chance to form an expansive network, informing them of what spaces - both formal and informal networks - exist in the region and which spaces they can potentially engage with. It opens up endless possibilities for artists, curators, collectors etc. in the Caribbean by giving them much needed exposure, as well as for those internationally, who will gain insight into a whole new market of quality work. Fresh Milk seeks to create a more integrated and connected region by using the arts as a vehicle to create partnerships and build community. Many Caribbean islands have no idea what is happening with their neighbours in the creative arts, which hinders our overall growth in the region. The Virtual Map will promote unity and aid in the building of support systems - whether it be the English, Spanish, French or Dutch speaking Caribbean, we would like to make sure all information is communicated as efficiently as possible, and invite the world to see what is being made and to see the region as a critical space. Fresh Milk is pleased to be the conduit between The Maria Holder Memorial Trust and the artistic community in Barbados and would like to thank them for their support, which allows Fresh Milk to continue supporting our nation’s youth and building capacity for artists in both the short and long term. This is why forming relationships with organizations with vested interest in expanding arts and culture becomes pivotal.
In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. Barbados' creative talent is one of the island's best kept secrets. Across a wide variety of disciplines there are skilled artisans and performers who produce international standard works, which often do not receive the exposure and acclaim they deserve. Arts in Motion was established to assist in bringing this talent to the fore, through the Barbados Summer Arts festival, which will be held August 16th - 18th this year. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
