Saturday April 24th Aweipo Gallery presents “Constants and Waves”…. imagine a whirlwind of local talent ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, with over 20 of the island’s current practicing artists exhibiting a range of works on paper, paintings, photographs, as well as sculptural and mixed media pieces. This exhibition will include works from artists such as Alison Chapman-Andrews, John Stuart, Winston Kellman, Everick Lynton, Sheena Rose, Nicholas Burnett, Corrie Scott, Heidi Berger, Martina Pilé and Susan Alleyne-Forde. “Constants and Waves” will run from April 24th to August 31 2010 Gallery hours Sun to Sat 10 am to 6pm. The Crane Village, The Crane, St Philip. T. 271 2839 aweipogallery@yahoo.com
AURELIA WALCOTT aureliaw@gmail.com Focusing on printmaking, the work of Aurelia Walcott takes you along the outline of nature and beauty aesthetics. This young artist is currently examining textures and tones found through the styling of hair within the Caribbean context. While drawing inspiration from the island, her work plays with the initial subject matter but rather focus on the textures of the image. Aurelia is showing in “Constants and Waves at Aweipo Gallery, the Crane. Show will run from April 24th to August 31 2010
Martina Pilé Medusa Mixed Media pilezahles@hotmail.com www.artgallery-mzpile.com My work relates to my Caribbean experience. It is with a variety of mediums that I like to channel my creativity. MarTina is showing in “Constants and Waves” at Aweipo Gallery, the Crane. Show will run from April 24th to August 31 2010
Corrie Scott Tropical Reef I & II Acrylic on Canvas email: corriescott@gmail.com website: http://www.corriescott.net/ Corrie, self taught, has a special love of the Caribbean which is apparent in her photography and her art. As an artist, she continues working and experimenting in all mediums, and does not restrict herself in subject matter, going from clean representational watercolours to large abstract pieces in acrylics and mixed medium. Corrie is showing in “Constants and Waves at Aweipo Gallery, the Crane. Show will run from April 24th to August 31 2010
Constants and Waves brings various types of artists together, displaying their different ranges and techniques, while showcasing a small fragment of the shape, art in Barbados has taken in recent years. The works in this exhibit move between what can be described as traditional Barbadian themes, to worldly conceptual expressions all the while displaying great versatility. Within this atmosphere, whimsical works from Sheena Rose and Nicholas Barnett depart from the normal or orthodox themes and are juxtaposed with rural scenes by John Stuart or the landscapes of Ann Dodson. With the progress of change and a new wave of younger artists fully embracing non-traditional approaches, artwork by well known artist, such as the expressionistic landscapes of Winston Kellman, contrast greatly with the realistic fisher scenes of Susan Alleyne-Forde, proving that there are no limits to an artists’ manner of expression among similar themes or across the generations. Among the non-representational works, Martina Pile and Corrie Scott also surpass their limits, with the former utilizing an arrangement of lace, fish bones and other materials to complete her “Medusa”, while Corrie departs from her well known photorealistic style, to engulf her canvas in texture and colour in “Tropical Reef I & II”. Whether it be the ceramic works of Juliana Inniss or Bill Grace, the photography of Leslie Taylor, or the manipulations of Julianne Gill or Simbah Pile, side by side these artists stand to create a body of work that shares artistic and cultural ideas whilst creating enough contrast which proves art in Barbados is as vibrant as ever. Aurelia Walcott
Nicholas Barnett. Nic.barnett.design@gmail.com Nic is not only a wonderful graphic artist but he creates excellent work in mixed media paintings. His work is whimsical and fun bringing a smile to the viewer’s face. Nic is showing in “Constants and Waves” at Aweipo Gallery, the Crane. Show will run from April 24th to August 31 2010
Alison Chapman-Andrews www.alisonchapmanandrews.net aca1@caribsurf.com The focus of my painting and my life has narrowed and simplified of late. No longer based on the natural uncultivated gullies of Barbados, the current works are often single trees, or plants from observation; and recording changes in light or growth: The surface is sometimes textured with local materials like coconut fiber, sawdust and burlap. Alison is showing in “Constants and Waves at Aweipo Gallery, the Crane. Show will run from April 24th to August 31 2010

BARBADOS MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY www.barbmuse.org.bb The exhibition "Exposed: Images of Yesteryear" is on at the Barbados Museum, St. Ann's Garrison, St. Michael, from April 09 to June 11, 2010. This is your chance to see Farley Hill Great House before it burned and many other rare images of a Barbados that few of us will recognise. Immerse yourself in scenes of the island captured by early photographers both known and unknown. Take a visual stroll down Broad Street and the Pierhead in the late 1800s, both teaming with activity. See what Roebuck Street and River Road looked like over 100 years ago, and beyond the city limits, take in Joe’s River and Bathsheba of the early 1900s. Barbados of yesteryear is exposed through landscape images, portraits and even family albums. The scenes can be yours too, as reproductions of the images may be requested. These selections from the museum's collection allow visitors to examine the earliest commercially available photographic processes such as daguerreotype, tin type, albumen, glass plate negatives, callotype and the early twentieth century use of photographic gel images. This is a unique opportunity to see the changing views of Barbados through the photographic lens shortly after the invention of photography in 1832.
BARBADOS MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY www.barbmuse.org.bb An exhibition will be held at the Barbados Museum of photographs from each participant in the recent National Geographic Photo Camp Barbados. From May 15 to July 14, 2010, members of the public will have a chance to see the results of the four-day workshop, during which disadvantaged students documented their environment under the guidance of National Geographic photographers Sam Abell and Matt Moyer. The Photo Camp was sponsored by the US Embassy, the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, Breakwater Management Services, Goldcorp Insurance Company, Chancery Chambers and Allstate International Assignments Limited, and many other public and private sector entities contributed generously to make it a success. The work coming out of this initiative is outstanding. Come see for yourself! During Museum Open Day at the Barbados Museum on Saturday, 15th May, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the doors will be thrown open to welcome one and all free of cost! Help us to mark International Museum Day, which will be celebrated on 18th May under the theme “Museums for Social Harmony”. Come view not one, but two temporary exhibitions and join us for a chance to win and exciting prizes, and to get books and other merchandise at rock bottom prices in the Museum Gift Shop’s Clearance Sale. Monday to Saturday, 9am. to 5pm. and Sundays 2pm. to 6pm. St. Ann’s Garrison, St. Michael , Tel: 1-246-427-0201/ 1-246-436-1956 Fax: 1-246-429-5946 email museum@caribsurf.com

Sheena Rose in Cape Town South Africa at Greatmore Art Studios for a summer residency. Barbadian visual artist and animator Sheena Rose is at Greatmore Art Studios in Cape Town South Africa on a 3-month residency. Sheena writes “to be given the opportunity to work among international and South African artists exchanging ideas and brainstorming new work is very exciting for me.” Private studio space is provided for each resident and a group exhibition is held at the end of the residency. Sheena is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Programme at Barbados Community College Fine Arts Programme. She is best known for her animation "Town" produced in Bridgetown Barbados 2009 and shown at the NAGC-sponsored Black Diaspora Visual Arts Symposium. Visit Sheena’s profile on this website. Greatmore Studios brings together local and international artists and curators from diverse cultural and national backgrounds in a creative working environment to encourage new ideas and stimulate professionalism, creativity and productivity. Local artists work together with international visiting artists in an atmosphere of cooperation, interaction and cultural exchange. Through this approach, artists are given the opportunity to follow new directions and push themselves beyond the boundaries of their own practice. Greatmore Studios forms part of the Triangle Arts Trust, a United Kingdom based organisation that initiates and facilitates an international network of artist-led workshops and residencies. This association affords artists access to information and opportunities to exchange ideas and skills with other artists around the world. In May Barbados became home toCaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution: the first ever of its kind film distribution company in the English-speaking Caribbean aimed at creating moneymaking opportunities for producers of Caribbean content. One of the many tangible outcomes of the recently concluded and highly acclaimed Best of CaribbeanTales Film Festival held in Barbados earlier this year, CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distributionis being established to represent Caribbean Filmmakers to the international community. It will also position Barbados as a "centre of excellence" for film in the region. CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution intends to acquire a broad-based catalogue of Caribbean-themed films from the Region and its Diaspora, and to market these products through its Festivals and other international markets such as Cannes and Mipcom as well as at trade fairs, missions and conferences.
According to CEO and renowned Filmmaker Frances-Anne Solomon, “there is an explosion of product coming out of the region and there is a need for a focused distribution strategy to ensure that this content gets the best deals on the international market.. Other companies exist around the world, but Caribbean cinema has its own aesthetic, which unfortunately is marginal to such entities. We wanted to create something that will take care of our own. Says Solomon. CaribbeanTale s Worldwide Distribution is in the process of acquiring content from filmmakers and showcased its inaugural Catalogue at the annual Caribbean Studies Association Conference in May. CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution is founded by Solomon, herself an accomplished international filmmaker. Other principals include Dr Keith Nurse, Director of UWI's Shridath Ramphal Center at Cave Hill, well-known Trinidadian Producer, Director and Media Personality Lisa Wickham, New York-based Barbadian publicist/entrpreneur Bevan Springer. and Jamaican filmmaker Mary Wells ("Kingston Paradise"). CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution Inc is a proud partner of the Barbados Business Enterprise Corp. a company formed by Dr Basil Springer, that provides Shepherding and Seed & Venture Capital services to businesses. ARTIST’S STATEMENT DEITIES-DEMONS: work in progress My work pivots around socio-political issues relating to borders and marginalization, social hierarchy, identity, caste, race and color. Navigating through three regions of the globe has made me aware of how changes in population demographics create subtle shifts in perceptions of who regard themselves as the nation and who are regarded as marginal. I started to work with the Deities-Demons series a few years back and then stopped. DEITIES-DEMONS I, was executed in late 2006 followed by DEITIES-DEMONS II in 2007. This series started to examine issues of cultural and political hegemony and our tendencies to demonizing the ‘other’. The ideas sprang from watching old British movies, Mortal Combat and Lara Croft games and movies where Asian deities are continually demonized. The whole idea of creating a DEMON out of a DEITY is completely ridiculous to anyone who is familiar with divinity in Hinduism or any other ancient religion. My interest was to construct a humorous response to the portrayal of Asian divinities in British and contemporary American popular media by juxtaposing the popular icon and a hero, Bugs Bunny from American popular culture with forms of Indian deities. I decided to use this funny, carrot-eating Bugs Bunny as a demonic figure just to prove the ridiculousness of the notion that an iconic figure from another culture should be considered demonic simply because it looks different. Bugs Bunny is a muchloved iconic figure of the popular media who is always portrayed as a smart, never malicious or antagonistic but will retaliate and always win if pushed too far by an antagonist. I juxtapose this popular icon with the Indian deity ‘Kali’ and other figurines, known to be protectors of mankind. The contrasting scale of an oversized evil-looking silhouette of Bugs Bunny with miniscule, helpless dangling deity figurines and other devices incorporated in the work are used to create a ridiculously humorous narrative. The series started as hybrid forms of prints and figurines of Indian gods and goddesses. It is now progressing to become a large-scale installation, which will include large wall drawings; hybrid forms and perhaps more spit-bite intaglio-type prints.
