CARIBBEAN DOORS by Corrie Scott www.corriescott.net “Many of these wooden houses are now lost to us and so I have tried to preserve them visually so that we may not forget the traditional architecture of our Caribbean. I love the worn, weathered and much fixed doors, windows and structures. These photographs were taken in Dominica between 2007 and 2009 while I stayed at a wonderful house called Ramelton in the rainforest. A stunningly beautiful island.

RAS AKYEM art_animal@yahoo.com Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award 2010

art-aniMAL was established in 2010 by internationally acclaimed Caribbean artist Ras Akyem. The creation of art-aniMAL was in response to the severe global under-representation of the Caribbean region as a whole in the visual arts. art-aniMAL brings the credibility of the regions best artist’s to the world.

Because of the Caribbean’s creative isolation, regional history and outside perceptions, which are so often attached to the Caribbean cliche (fishing boats and palm trees). We offer you this collective of the most contemporary, forward thinking, visual artist’s in the region.

Adam A.Werth Managing Director

Santa Fe 2011. These Lithographs and Monotypes were Ras Akyem’s first experience with the Printmaking medium. This series of work was created in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Hand Graphics with Master Printmaker Michael Costello www.artanimal.net

“My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivitythat is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and 'spiritual' character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally” Tiyi by Design Exclusive Hand-Crafted Jewelry By Ichia Tiyi

RAMBLING POETS AT CAFÉ CYBER Quenntis Ashby Margaret Callow Dawn Evans William Holt Zan McDowell Mary Linda Miller Ashen Venema This book is a collection of poems posted in cyberspace over eight months by Quenntis Ashby, Margaret Callow, Dawn Evans, William Holt, Zan McDowell, Mary Linda Miller and Ashen Venema (domiciled in Taiwan, England, South Africa, the USA and Barbados), all part of a unique poetic conversation on a writer’s website. The thread on which the poems were posted received over 26,000 views during its brief life, influencing the poets to publish this in order to make their poetry accessible to a wider audience. They may very well represent the root of a new imagistic movement within the global community – linked through technology where meaningful connections could be made, like-minded souls and friends-to-be, thousands of miles apart who had never met and probably would never meet, would move each other to create a new kind of sentimentalism that crosses oceans and mountains and barriers of sex, race, nationality, culture, education and class to create a modern representation of a humane society which could only be made possible through utilization of this amazing resource we call the worldwide web. The Caribbean Sea will from May 1st, 2011 be designated a "Special Area" under provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), a senior Barbados government minister has said." This means from that date the disposal of garbage and other pollutants in the wider Caribbean Sea is strictly prohibited, except in cases where it is processed in accordance with Annex V," International Transport Minister George Hutson said as the region gets ready to join the international community in observing World Maritime Day today. JASON DECAIRES TAYLOR www.underwatersculpture.com info@underwatersculpture.com Oceans teem with microscopic organisms that are constantly drifting down towards the sea bed, attaching to and colonising on the way any hard secure surface, such as rock outcrops, and thereby creating the basis of a natural reef. Coral reefs attract an array of marine life (such as colourful fish, turtles, sea urchins, sponges, and sharks) and also provide enclosed spaces for sea creatures to breed or take refuge. Only about 10 – 15% of the sea bed has a solid enough substratum to allow reefs to form naturally. In order to increase the number of reefs in these areas artificial reefs have recently been created from materials that are durable, secure and environmentally sensitive. These reefs appear to have been successful in that they have attracted coral growth which, in turn, can support an entire marine ecosystem. One of the greatest benefits of artificial reefs is that they have lifted the pressure off natural reefs which, over the past few decades, have been overfished and over-visited. By diverting attention to artificial reefs, natural reefs have now been given a greater chance to repair and to regenerate.

JASON DECAIRES TAYLOR www.underwatersculpture.com/pages/gallery/grenada.html

Jason deCaires Taylor is a man of many identities whose work resonates with the influences of his eclectic life. Growing up in Europe and Asia with his English father and Guyanese mother nurtured his passion for exploration and discovery. Much of his childhood was spent on the coral reefs of Malaysia where he developed a profound love of the sea and a fascination with the natural world. This would later lead him to spend several years working as a scuba diving instructor in various parts of the globe, developing a strong interest in conservation, underwater naturalism and photography. His bond with the sea remains a constant throughout Taylor's life though other key influences are found far from the oceans. During his teenage years, work as a graffiti artist fired his interest in the relationship between art and the environment, fostering an ambition to produce art in public spaces and directing the focus of his formal art training. He graduated in 1998 from the London Institute of Arts, with a B.A. Honours in Sculpture and Ceramics. Later, experience in Canterbury Cathedral taught him traditional stone carving techniques whilst five years working in set design and concert installations exposed him to cranes, lifting, logistics and completing projects on a grand scale. With this range of experiences he was equipping himself with the skills required to execute the ambitious underwater projects that have made his name. Carving cement instead of stone and supervising cranes while in full scuba gear to create artificial reefs submerged below the surface of the Caribbean Sea, the various strands of his diverse life resolve themselves convincingly in the development of his underwater sculptures. These ambitious, public works have a practical, functional aspect, facilitating positive interactions between people and fragile underwater habitats. Jason deCaires Taylor has gained significant interest and recognition for his unique work, with articles in over 1000 publications around the world, including National Geographic, Vogue, USA Today, Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. His sculptures have aired on television features and documentaries with CNN, Discovery Channel, BBC, Metropolis Art Lounge and Thalassa. His international reputation was established in May 2006, when he created the world's first underwater sculpture park in Grenada, West Indies, leading to both private and public commissions. Taylor is currently founder and Artistic Director of the Museo Subacuรกtico de Arte (MUSA) in Cancun, Mexico.

Our publisher - Toute Bagai Publishing (TBP). TBP is the first publishing house in the Caribbean to produce internationally distributed magazines showcasing Caribbean living. TBP was formed in 1999 with signature magazine MACO Caribbean Living. The magazine was the first of its kind in concept, quality, and style, and is the first Caribbean-based magazine to be promoted by the international bookstore chain Barnes and Noble (also owner of the B. Dalton franchise). TBP went on to produce three new publications all in the space of one year in 2005; MACO Destinations, MACO Design Sourcebook, and MACO Caribbean Homes, a collector's edition of the magazine's best. The company also produced numerous guest publications for other companies with resounding success. Awards TBP and Colour Innovations were highly noted at the 2004 Premier Print Awards for MACO Magazine Volume 6, Issue 1, and received the Gold and Silver awards at the 31 st Annual International Gallery of Superb Printing Awards in 2005 for MACO Destinations, Volume 1 Issue 1, and MACO Magazine Volume 6 Issue 3, respectively. TBP has garnered worldwide renown for its low-key, yet distinctive style, attention to detail, and passion for the craft. After only nine years, the company has quickly become the symbol of Caribbean chic, and has committed itself through various sponsorships and partnerships with some of the Caribbean 's most influential companies such as Remy Martin, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Camper and Nicholsons.
