BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS

MARCH 2015

Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

PRESS RELEASE ‘Women’s Work 2: The “I” of Venus’. 12 Women artists. Gallery of Caribbean Art, Queen Street, Speightstown, Barbados March 14th - April 9th. 2015 Opening reception Sunday March 15th, 5pm-8 pm. Feature address by the Hon. Mia Amor Mottley,Q.C.,M.P. ‘Women’s Work 2 : The ” I” of Venus’ was inspired by the success of ‘Behold! Women’s Work ‘ in 2013 and by the new energies born from the collaborations in that show. 12 women artists bring their personal, widely different styles, media and temperaments to the interpretations of ‘The “I“ of Venus’, some are literal, while others vary in their intensity and scope of abstraction. They range from Darla Trotman’s literal, photorealistic interpretations, through Heidi Berger’s gently lyrical portrayals of Barbadian women and the softly romantic portraits of Tracey Williams, to Rosemary Parkinson’s sharp wit, expressed in stark, cartoonish black, white and red drawings and Lilian Sten’s , unapologetically stormy , abstract renditions of the female principle. Alison Chapman-Andrews shows new variations of her well established oeuvre, but also joins Corrie Scott and Martina Pile with roundbellied mixed media portrayals of the Goddess in her many glorious and voluptuous forms. Joyce Daniel celebrates the birthing theme with an, almost imperceptible, nod to Botticelli and Ann Rudder presents her ancestral narratives in colourful, multi- layered assemblages. Heather-Dawn Scott steps away from her ‘nostalgic Caribbeana’ paintings to confront the viewer with edgy and visually exciting mixed media works, while the trade-mark natural, and effortless, elegance of Ichia Tiyi’s jewellery combines the spiritual and earthy qualities of universal womanhood. All are visual explorations of the complexities of Venus-the goddess of love, creativity, prosperity and sex. The exhibition will be formally opened by the Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, Q.C., M.P., whose dynamic stint as Minister of Culture saw an exponential development in the areas of art and culture. ‘The “I” of Venus’ can be enjoyed at the Gallery of Caribbean Art in Speightstown for a full three weeks: from March 13th until April 9th. . Gallery hours ; Monday-Friday 9.30 am- 4.30 pm Sat . 9.30am-2 pm Contact info :Gallery of Caribbean Art . artgallerycaribbean@caribsurf.com tel: (246) 419 0858 Heidi Berger heidimberger@gmail.com Corrie Scott. corriescott@gmail.com

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. Corrie Dec 7th 2011

‘Alison – Tritone’ 18x24in Acrylic and palm fibre on canvas. by Arthur Atkinson

‘Alison – Tritone’ 18x24in Acrylic and palm fibre on canvas. “A portrait of an artist friend of mine. Alison Chapman-Andrews came to Barbados in the early 70’s, a graduate of RCA and a lecturer in art. Her ‘day job’ was as a teacher at St.Michael’s School where the students benefited from her expertise for a number of years. While teaching she observed our Caribbean landscape and proceeded to make it her own. Her palms have become a trademark but her inventive semi-abstract stylizations never cease to amaze and/or surprise me. She has worked with other subject matter but whatever she chooses to interpret is sure to be a treat for the viewer.” Arthur Atkinson

To Look, Perchance To See A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTIST In 30 years as a Visual Artist, Abstraction has been my almost constant creative filter, primarily in the medium of pastels on paper but also in my own poetry, the art I enjoy and the music I listen to. My occupational migration to Photography in 2007 was largely accidental but has now come to satisfy a life-long interest in the medium previously inhibited by the techinical and financial challenges inherent in serious production. With the advent of the digital camera and the now ubiquitous smartphone camera, my interest is now being fulfilled and Abstraction a primary impulse. The works in this exhibition were all captured using an iPhone 5®, a choice which immediately opens the images to critical questioning. That handicap aside, this digital device has become a constant in my everyday ife, ready to immortalize even the most mundane scenes at minimal cost. My own most deeply ingrained abstract tendencies are now given a daily outlet, with an entirely new and visible universe of possible subject matter. To realise these images in print takes little effort, though to be sure, the purest aesthetics of archival photographic printing (and perhaps even photography itself), are abandoned. Armed with the iPhone®, I have discovered many new or previously unnoticed relationships and spaces of abstraction, deepened my understanding of my immediate environment and enriched my relationship to it. I would guess it has also opened the eyes and minds of the few dozen souls who, to date, have enjoyed these images via my blog, on Instagram or on FaceBook – even Rihanna has weighed in on one of my images! Indeed, the comments “I never noticed that before” or “How did you see that?” or “I always pass that way and never noticed…”, are commonly recurring contributions by my viewers and the more discerning viewer never fails to acknowledge the validity of the underlying creative statement, without so much as a question about the tools used. A bit of hesitation has accompanied my embrace of this 21st century device but essentially it has become a transformative and sometimes catalytic extension of my eye. It informs my internal creative discourse in a way that has traditionally taken months, sometimes years, to bear fruit. Digital wizardry aside, the work invites viewers to be open to spaces and visual events that are otherwise locked in the ephemera of time and space, indeed, often ignored and lost but for the presence of an artist who is consciously looking (and sometimes seeing). So, potentially at least, we are all artists - at - large! Many thanks to all those who have encouraged my work and in particular those who have enabled the exhibition and publication of this work. CURATOR’S STATEMENT Is photography a work of art ? This question has been debated in lectures, essays, auction houses and many other for a for a very long time and will, without any doubt, be part of many more discussions for decades to come. The easiness in reproducing and duplicating the same images as well the relativeness to access or acquire them may be one of the reasons why photography has not been accepted as seriously as it should be. Although art galleries and auctions houses have given the discipline a more dignified status it still is “ L enfant pauvre des Arts Visuels “ If one accepts the premise that photography is not a mere mechanical record and the application of technical skills but a legitimate mode of expression using a different medium, then indeed a photograph can qualify as a work of art at the same level as a painting , a sculpture, an installation or a performance can be a candidate for the significant appellation of being called a “Work of Art”. That brings us to a more ambiguous and profound mystifying question: What “Really”,is a Work of Art ? Scholars, Art Historians, Curators, Gallerists , Art Collectors , Art Auctioneers and Art critics may define it according to their forte to elevate themselves in the academic or commercial world which they do very successfully in many cases. Nevertheless not every painting, sculpture, installation or photograph is a work of art . Besides the combination of plastic qualities such as lines, tones, and shapes the artistic visual language combined with imagination must create an original and unique form that commands an aesthetic emotion. This allows the viewer to share a profound artistic experience through the eyes of the creator and demystifies the notion that art is the reserve for an elite few. Denyse Ménard-Greenidge M.A.

Fresh Milk and Adopt-a-Stop have entered into a collaborative partnership to bring art into the public space. Fresh Milk has commissioned six young Barbadian artists to produce original art work for benches which will pop up in public spaces around the island between September 2014 and February 2015. Stay tuned for more information as these benches come to a stop near you! For news on the Fresh Milk Books Team, check out their tumblr page here: http://freshmilkbooks.tumblr.com/contributors%20 And finally, Fresh Milk's Assistant to Director, Katherine Kennedy, heads to Germany on Monday September 1st to spend three months at the Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship in Stuttgart. This ResSupport Fellowship will allow her to learn how to run a better residency programme. While Katherine is enjoying that amazing experience, Versia Harris will be interning here at Fresh Milk as Assistant to Director in training. http://freshmilkbarbados.com/2014/06/13/fresh-milk-receives-a-2014-ressupport-fellowship/

In an effort to cultivate discussions about the arts starting at a young age while engaging with the community, Fresh Milk will implement an outreach programme using the resources available in The Colleen Lewis Reading Room (CLRR). One of the many challenges faced by young creatives is, despite their artistic gifts, they often struggle when it comes to speaking and writing comprehensively about their work. This is a skill that would benefit immensely from reading, whether specifically arts oriented texts or even well written fiction; gaining an appreciation for articulate material is imperative to mastering one’s own practice. Fresh Milk proposes to be the go-to point for refining these skills, beginning at CSEC level when children are expected to take their research and written abilities to a higher standard, all the way up to providing MA or PhD candidates with a deep pool of knowledge and unique material which they can draw upon. The Fresh Milk team will work with secondary school teachers in this area to construct a programme which will bring the students to Fresh Milk to show them the studio and reading room, letting them know that there is an environment available which can cater to their academic and creative needs. To keep up to date with our other activities, visit: http://www.freshmilkbarbados.com and like our Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/FreshMilkBarbados

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY POETS www.lxpbarbados.org

MISSION The Mission of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) is threefold; 1. To nurture those involved in the arts, with a special emphasis on poets and spoken word artists; 2. To edutain the public through exposure to our art, and 3. To use the voices of the artists to bring awareness to, and to actively work towards addressing issues of importance in our society. VISION The LXP was founded on the principle that no art form exists in a vacuum. It is inexplicably tied to society, culture and time in which it is created, and that artists can improve their skills, and inspire one another when they operate in a close knit community of other like-minded artists, committed to positive feedback and professionalism in pursuing their art to its highest and best potential. The LXP sees spoken word and other forms of poetry and lyrical commentary as art forms which are not only able to express the personal vision, emotions and stories of the individual artist, but also as vehicles to speak to social issues not addressed in other forums and to educate the public in the hopes of bringing positive change to the society in which we live.

Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression. OBJECTIVES of the NCF are: To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry Rodney Ifill, Cultural Officer Visual Arts 424-0909 ext.234 rodney-ifill@ncf.bb www.ncf.bb Annette Nias Cultural Officer - Film and Photography 424-0909 Ext 238 annette-nias@ncf.bb
