CREATIVITY IS THE FOUNDATION OF A STRONG COMMUNITY By Sarah Thomson Six months ago I dragged my husband and kids to Barbados on a mission to do all that we can to help the local community become self-sustaining. We are focused on building a social enterprise – a business that does social good while also making returns for its shareholders. Our goal is to build public support for creativity which we believe will spread far beyond the arts to help local entrepreneurs. Barbados can and should be producing enough food to sustain its population but the island relies heavily on imports. As well local manufacturing isn’t producing enough supplies for the population. The country is trying to embrace environmental initiatives, but the community is slow to engage. It is a country with a long history of slavery, tourism, and corruption – all have worked to destroy the much needed public trust that allows a community to flourish. We’ve named our company Canvas and Cave and plan to build an eco-art centre in Barbados to build support for creativity and engage the community. Cultural support for creativity has a huge impact on the way people view their community. It causes people to become more engaged and hold government and institutions accountable for the social services they provide. When these institutions fulfill their mandate, public trust grows. With public trust comes a sense of security which allows people to more open to unique investments. The impact of public trust on local entrepreneurs is extensive. They are more likely to gain first level support from their friends, family, and neighbours. We hope to ignite support for creative by building an active art centre where the local community can learn the arts, share ideas and build relationships. As Harvard professor Tarun Khanna describes in his book Trust: Creating the Foundation for Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries,-- “when citizens lack trust, they are less likely to comply with laws and regulations, pay taxes, tolerate different viewpoints or ways of life, contribute to economic vitality, resist the appeals of demagogues, or support their neighbors.” I believe that public trust can be rebuilt. I have spent over a decade advocating for positive change that would help the environment- from transit expansion to protecting ecologically sensitive land. I’ve watched how just a little education changed public attitudes and transformed local communities. But alongside the environmental work we did, I noticed that early supporters of environmental initiatives were also keen supporters of the arts. A culture of support for good ideas seems to spread from a cultural attitude that supports creativity. And in communities that have strong support for the arts, local entrepreneurs flourish. Barbados needs to attract entrepreneurs and support those within the community.

Barbados will host our first proof of concept location. It will be sustained by an environmental glamping boutique hotel offering classes in the arts and environment to the local community and visitors wanting unique experiences. As I child I grew up in a small town just outside Toronto . When our family moved there, the downtown core was filled with abandoned old houses. We had at least a dozen within a few blocks of our house. But the town wanted to revitalize the core and in 1978 the Burlington Art Gallery and Community Art Centre was built just a few blocks from our house. The centre worked as a hub for local artists, attracting people to the area, and as the community began to support it, small entrepreneurial initiatives sprouted up. A lively music scene developed with some famous musicians and bands – Rob Preuss, Gordon Deppe, and Brett Wickens formed The Spoons in 1979. In 1986 I launched a business that built convenience stores in gas stations. Back then few had them. My company grew from developing and managing, to creating store concepts and brands for various gas companies. But I’m not sure we would have succeeded if the community hadn’t been ripe to support good ideas. I come from a family of artists - my mother is a potter and painter, and my father was a sculptor and architect. My parents instilled the idea that contributing to the world by making it a little better, a little more beautiful for others, is what truly defines personal success. While many aim for wealth, fame and status – these can be distractions that lure people away from making any significant contribution to the world. We hope that Canvas and Cave will make a real contribution and are hoping to find a partner who is passionate about building cultural support for creativity. â&#x20AC;?These pieces are from my collection of monotypes...a monotype is a unique print, transferred onto paper by printing press from a smooth plate that has been painted with ink. Some of the prints have chine colle, a process where other papers, usually rice papers, are adhered (colle) to the unique print by running it through the press a second time.â&#x20AC;? Heidi Berger

Monotypes 2019 Monotypes and Chine Colle Printmaking is the art of producing an image by transferring impressions from a plate, block or screen onto paper. While most printmaking methods allow for the production of multiple prints, a monotype is a one-of-a-kind print. The artist creates the image by applying inks on a blank plate made of plexiglass or metal. The plate is covered with dampened paper and is then passed through the printing press, producing a single copy of the print.. Because the creation of a monotype involves the direct application of inks onto the plate, and allows the artist to manipulate the inks on the plate by brush, roller, and other tools, it is often referred to as the “painterly print”, and it is preferred by many artists who consider themselves primarily painters, not printmakers. Its qualities include freedom, flexibility, and spontaneity. The process of chine colle, which is used on many of the prints in this exhibit, is a specialized printmaking technique originated in the late eighteenth century. Chine colle is roughly translated from the French, “chine” being the French name for paper manufactured in China, and “colle”, meaning attached. The chine colle papers are cut or torn into the desired shapes and brushed with a coating of wheat paste on one side and placed on top of the inked plate, paste side up, before placement on the support paper. When under the press, the pressure from the bed laminates the papers together. The ink from the plate prints on top of the chine colle papers, often giving the prints a layered effect, texture and added subtlety.

The women of Barbados, where my family has had a home for almost four decades, continue to inspire me. As artist and as "almost Bajan", I am an observer and a witnessâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; I am constantly on the look-out for people who "speak" to me, for the look or gesture which prods me to hang on to that moment, their moment, in paint.

i remember the day when i decided NOT to become a coldhearted businesswoman in a maleprevalent career field. i had the opportunity, like many of us do these days to embrace life as an aloof and pulse less 'successful' person building a creative enterprise that looked impressive from the outside but had moments of "armwrestling" and "high words" with those whose voices have way more bass and volume than mine... The decision to choose warmth over coldness, tenderness over telling somebody off, joy over the mundane and camaraderie over competition still brings a deep breath and smile to my face AND income to my pocket sis, you don't lose when you choose to maintain the essence of who you truly are you don't have to be rough to be in business or aloof to be 'taken seriously‘ As an entrepreneurista, you DO, however, have to have the endurance of an Olympic athelete, the tact of an ant colony, a coach, mentor or couple or a few supporters whether in person or online, patience of Job, the humility of Mary (the one who used her hair to wash His feet), the courage of David who knocked out Goliath with a 'gutterperk' and a rock, the resourcefulness of an outdoorsman or woman, the spunk of jack russell, and every ounce of grace and joy you've been blessed to receive...many of those you'll be taught and acquire along the way and you'll find so much joy building, growing and managing your business while serving your clients well with a glow it's soooo worth the effort Indra Rudder

Created in 2016, The Barn Arts Centre is dedicated to the promotion and development of art-based learning. Our mission is to provide a unique learning environment for diverse audiences to experience a range of art based programs. The Founders of The Barn Arts Centre are Jo- Anne Johnson and Juliana Inniss. Jo Anne started doing ceramics as a hobby in 1982 and has operated a ceramics studio since 1987, providing services and supplies to people who wished to do slip casted ceramics as a hobby. She has taught many different finishing techniques to her students and learnt many more through experimenting, and trial and error. Juliana has been working with pottery and ceramics since 1992. She began by hand-painting local pottery with bold and colourful designs. After graduating University she made the decision to pursue her passion for art through the medium of ceramics. Juliana has worked with a number of techniques such as casted ceramics, handbuilding, surface decoration and raku firing. RICHARD DAISLEY In the year 2004 I was introduced to the art of lamp working a form of glass blowing. Fascinated by the uses of a torch to bring glass to a molten state where it can then be blown and shaped with tools and hand movements, I knew then this was my passion and I fell in love with this ancient art form instantaneously. In the first year of dedicating my life to this newly found love, I realised this relationship was not going to be easy, and so I found myself at the verge of a break up. However I needed this to work and I made up in my mind to wade thru these rough waters and overcome all obstacles in which I would encounter as time passed by. I learned to appreciate this medium called Glass. I became one with it, expressing my feelings in each piece I crafted. Expressions of the heart, mind, body and soul. Feelings of happiness, sorrow, pain, pleasure, hatred and love filled each work of art as they told their own stories and I told mine. With every heated kiss from the flame upon my skin, the fire reminded me not to take it for granted. For respect was due and I often felt its wrath, when I didn't take heed. Leaving behind scars as a constant reminder. Guess its true what the old folks used too say. Play with fire, you will get burnt. As the years went by one after the other I matured not only as an artist but as an individual. For while I was molding the glass it to was molding me. Though still young in my career as an artist I aspire someday for my name to be written and remembered in histories pages, amongst the greatest artists the world has ever seen. I often look back at where I started and where I am now. I have come a might long way and I must give thanks. Thanks first and foremost to the Almighty Father, for without him who and where would I be? The Father gave me life, health, a creative mind and the ability to make my dreams come true. I was also given a strong support system. My family, friends, love ones, patrons and yes even the critics. You all played an important role in this journey of my life and for that I say thank you, from the depth of my heart. JILL WALKER BOOK Up the Islands Memories of the West Indies Artist Jill Walker is well known for her paintings of Barbados, but her new book ‘Up the Islands’, shows her remarkable collection from the diverse islands of the West Indies. Together with photographs taken by her husband Jimmy and excerpts from his weekly letters to his mother in Scotland in the 1950s, this book follows the travels of a young couple through the islands in a simpler time. The book has been compiled by Jill’s daughter, Sue Trew and will be available at all five of the Best of Barbados Gift Shops in November.
