CARIBBEAN DOORS by Corrie Scott www.corriescott.net “Many of these wooden houses are now lost to us and so I have tried to preserve them visually so that we may not forget the traditional architecture of our Caribbean. I love the worn, weathered and much fixed doors, windows and structures. These photographs were taken in Dominica between 2007 and 2009 while I stayed at a wonderful house called Ramelton in the rainforest. A stunningly beautiful island.

WE ARE SAD TO SAY BRIDGETOWN GALLERY HAS CLOSED DOWN “Therese Hadchity ran a serious and great looking space. She wrote wisely on art, and in a society where the serious in art is rarely rewarded was a beacon of integrity”. Alison Chapman-Andrews

Zemicon Closes Zemicon, in the last months Bridgetown Gallery has closed. After 11 years Therese Hatchity has closed the doors of the only private Art Gallery in Bridgetown. Its name she formed by combining two words. Zemi , the Amerindian figure representing the god-head, of the ancient Caribbean; with “icon” –now meaning an image of importance., from small altar images or picture of saints in the Western tradition, so Zemi and icon combined in a strong word . The opening exhibition in October 2000 included most of the artists she would represent. Artists then producing interesting work in Barbados:, Arthur and Ewan Atkinson, William Cummins, Nick Whittle, Ras Ishi and Ras Akyem , myself, Winston Kellman and Ian Moore,14 in all. From the start she was selective and opinionated. Unfortunately David and Indrani Gall left the island as later did Stanley Greaves and HeatherDawn Scott. Frances Griffith died, so the first 14 quickly dwindled. However to make up for these losses others were invited and one-person shows were mounted by Annalee Davis, Heidi Berger, Bill Grace, Eric Belgrave Goldie Speiler and Juliana Inniss Emerging artists were encouraged to show like Alicia Alleyne, Simba Pile, and Tonya Wiles Artists from the Caribbean like Kenwyn Critchlow from Trinidad, Carolyn Sardine from St Vincent, Ossie Hussein and George Simon from Guyana and photographer Albert Chung from Jamaica, had shows. Her very last show was Oliver Benoit from Grenada, showing this Caribbean outreach as important to Therese. Most of these made little money. Indeed most shows didn’t and those that did financed others. Continued on next page………..

(Zemicon Closes continued) As owner she was entitled to make her own decisions, which she did however unpopular, despite her critics. As a critic she is perceptive and knowledgeable .She wrote the introductory essay in the National Art Gallery catalogues and curated their annual shows at Zemicon, Queens Park and Bagnall Point Galleries. These entailed choosing work from the National collection in its many aspects, and creating around a unique theme. Two memorable ones were “Art for Export.” and “Words on Painting“ Did I say she is good looking and wise? Did I say Zemicon Gallery was a beautiful and uncluttered space? The gallery is closed but we look forward to Therese’s involvement in a different way in the visual art scene. Alison Chapman-Andrews,

The opening of Gallery NuEdge Barbados is planned for May 2011. A former British Colony and a member of the Commonwealth, Barbados is an island with a dual heritage. Limegrove, Barbados first mixed use lifestyle centre located in the heart of Holetown, covers 10 acres, and includes approximately 85,000 sq.ft of retail space. Many of the leading retail brands will be participating in this sophisticated luxury retail-shopping environment, while the adjacent residence will offer the finest in contemporary Caribbean living. The Limegrove Lifestyle Center aims to be the most stylish place to shop, dine and lime for all visitors and residents of Barbados Established in 2002, in Montreal’s prestigious Quartier du Musée, Galerie NuEdge Fine Arts International, L.P., S.E.C. is located at 1480 Sherbrooke St. West. “My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivitythat is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and 'spiritual' character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally” Tiyi by Design Exclusive Hand-Crafted Jewelry By Ichia Tiyi

This means from that date the disposal of garbage and other pollutants in the wider Caribbean Sea is strictly prohibited, except in cases where it is processed in accordance with Annex V," International Transport Minister George Hutson said as the region gets ready to join the international community in observing World Maritime Day today.
