BARBADOS ARTS EVENTS

May 2012

Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events April 2012 This is a completely free and unsponsored magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. 'Blooming Roses' by Corrie Scott. This series is from my iphone using the Hipstamatic App with just a 60watt bulb. I decided to exhibit these to show that photography is open to any camera and any interpretation (and any modern app). No corrections of any kind have been made on these images except for re sizing the image to 5" by 5" at 300dpi. It is as it was photographed. Printed with archival inks on acid free paper. Series of 17.

I love the worn, weathered and much fixed doors, windows and structures. 11” by 14” with a mat that brings it up to 16” by 20” ready for framing. Printed on archival photographic paper. $280Bds ($140USD). corriescott@gmail.com. +1(246) 424 3965. www.corriescott.net

KATHERINE FELIX caribkat@gmail.com www.facebook.com/katherine.felix?sk=notes

All artistic expressions cross some kind of boundary; time, space, culture or race. Art is International; visions are shared in world wide webs spanning no space, all of time; with common threads spun from every life. Art often represents ecosystems, the environment; Caribbean flare and rhythms; or city lights, city-scapes abstract thoughts, shining prisms.

It can also tell stories with dark views of life, condemning what’s trending in on-line threads; balanced then by positive parables; spreading light rays of hope instead. There is street art, modern art or fantasy, all our reflections of various scope. New ideas developed, from discarded objects found; ideas flowing with other artists, forming creations wherever the muse is bound.

There are many colours of artistic dreams, mental collages, blended and shared; by some who live far away from home, and those only down the road. In art there are no borders no demarcation lines that we as artists cannot cross to join our hearts and minds. Artists reflect the signs of our times in Vision, Rhythm and Rhyme;

Spoken Words Street Art, Paintings, song and dance, or just a guitar; softly strumming while a freestyler rhymes in parlance. Shared delights, Visions, insights arms welcome- wide to other souls, making similar artistic flights. Come along then; with open minds, hearts and fearless dreams, where artists know that life is not as limited as some would make it seem.

BARBADOS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL www.barbadosartsfestival.com Art is about the core elements of our lives, manifested in what we see, hear, taste, make, read and write, wear, and how we move. It is the creative footprint that becomes the discernible difference between people of different countries and experiences. It is a unique cultural trademark and the magnet that draws us to explore the corners of the world in search of those aspects of life that make us different from each other. It is the goal of the Barbados Summer Arts Festival to encourage the celebration of these seven elements that reflect our cultural identity and as we do so, to foster their development, allowing gainful and sustainable development for their practitioners. Ronnie Carrington (246) 426 0830 (246) 230-8273 info@barbadosartsfestival.com

FESTIVAL EVENTS BIM-Rock Variations Friday, May 18, 2012 The Inaugural Bim Literary Festival joins with the inaugural Barbados Summer Arts Festival to present evening of poetry & prose, at the Hastings Esplanade. This location, fanned by balmy Caribbean breezes, is a popular venue for the Royal Barbados Police Force band concerts, and lends well to the enjoyment of the arts. This event is the precursor to a week-end celebration of several art forms, May 25th – 27th, the first Barbados Summer Arts Festival. Tuk-muh-nuh! Friday, May 25, 2012 Time 7:00 p.m. The Barbados Summer Arts Festival’s opening musical event features the infectious Tuk rhythm, integrated into a twelve-piece band, to give a scintillating performance, across a variety of musical genres that will thrill and excite. The true beat of Barbados explored! The Hastings Arts Mart Friday, Saturday & Sunday - May 25th - 27th – 10AM-7PM This is the BSAF’s 2012 umbrella event – a three-day display of the artistic talents and products of our people. There will be hand-crafted products, visual arts & photography, fashion, dance, culinary arts, martial arts, and aerobic displays and table-top games. The Art Of Healthy Living Saturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 8:00 A.M. Arts In Motion is an advocate of a healthy life style and during the Arts Mart there will be several activities that promote healthy living. Beachercise, martial arts and aerobic sessions, and the sale of healthy foods, will be part of the Barbados Summer Arts Festival. The Food FairSaturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 10:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M. As part of the Hastings Arts Mart we will be embracing culinary offerings not only of Barbadians but of the Caribbean. There will be special emphasis on the promotion of homemade items: preserves, seasonings, beverages and wines.

Proper Pudding & Souse Saturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 11:00 P.M. Pudding and souse lovers all think that their supplier makes the best platter. Now we’ll find out just whose pudding and souse is the most popular. Pudding and souse fans will be asked to submit the names of their PPS people. The six most frequently occurring names will be asked to come to the Arts Mart for a judges’ sampling, of which selected audience members will be a part.The most popular dish will be awarded the Carlton & A1 ‘proper pudding & souse prize’. JUNIOR DUELLING CHALLENGE Saturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 5:00 P.M Chef Peter Edey’s popular television programme will be recorded under our big tent at the Arts Mart venue in Hastings. Teams of young chefs will vie for honours in front of a television audience, bringing to reality one of the goals of Arts in Motion – giving talented people an opportunity to showcase their skills to as wide an audience as possible. The ‘Tuk-Muh-Nuh’ Congaline Saturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 3:00 P.M To add some additional spice to an already spicy event, there will be a special Tuk band congaline. We have invited an exciting wind-instrument ensemble to join the regular Tuk band to add some musical interest. A line of beautiful young ladies in creatively designed T-shirts will follow, enticed by a compelling rhythm pattern. Beat It Saturday, May 26, 2012 Time: 6:00 P.M. Music is central to every festival and we keep it flowing on this Saturday evening with a concert by the St Lucy Secondary School’s steel band orchestra. Caribbean Mirror & Picture Barbados Saturday, May 26, 2012 Photography on-line exhibition & competition. Arts in Motion wishes to see the new enthusiasm for photography, created by digital era, harnessed in two ways - the use of photography to raise public awareness about some of the issues facing our societies and the flourishing of the medium as an art form. The Caribbean Mirror on-line photographic exhibition and competition, is open to all, with entries to be submitted by May 31st. It places an emphasis on developmental issues relating to the natural & built environment, people and health. There will also be an unrestricted category that explores the possibilities of the art form. Picture Barbados is a photographic treasure hunt where clues are given via the media, during the month of May. Participants are asked to produce pictures according to their interpretation of the clues, and knowledge of the island. There will be a display of the winning entries at a date and venue to be announced.

Queens Park Christmas Posse Pose-off Sunday, May 27, 2012Time: 10:00 A.M. As popular as the Christmas morning event in Queen’s Park is, relatively few Barbadians get to see the spectacle first hand. We are inviting those who go to Queens Park to join us at the Hastings esplanade area to strut their stuff on the morning of Sunday May 27th. The Art of Speaking Well Sunday, May 27, 2012 Radio event. The Barbados Summer Arts festival has as its mission the development of our various art forms and the creation of new opportunities.For those who like dramatic performance as well as those who may be considering a career in broadcasting, this one’s for you.Competitors will be given a passage to read to the audience as if you were a news anchor. Points will be awarded based on your presentation. Who knows… a leading radio station may just be waiting for you! Tastes Like Home Sunday, May 27, 2012. Time: 11:00 P.M A competitive element will be introduced into the food fair, with the ‘Taste Like Home’ cook-off. Six regional teams will be invited to prepare their country’s traditional dish, in the most creative way.. A panel of judges and members of the audience will adjudicate. The ART Of THE Makeover Sunday, May 27, 2012 Video event. Barbados boasts a growing number of excellent make-up artistes. We will test the skills of the young brigade as they execute their craft and create works of art on willing participants. The Fashion Fair Sunday, May 27, 2012 Time: 3:00 P.M. Our young fashion designers have been gradually making their mark on the local and regional scene. This is another opportunity for these artisans to display their designs in the Hastings catwalk caper. MUSICAL FINALE Sunday, May 27, 2012 Time: 6:00 P. M. We end the Festival as we started – with a musical event in the Bandstand of the Hastings esplanade. Here we can ask questions and push for action from our Government. Since August 2011 this historic building has been vacated and boarded up - leaving the visual arts community without the most relatable, accessible and supportive exhibition space in Barbados. Queen's Park has always been for the people, let the people now be for Queen's Park. Like us, Post, Comment, - Participate.

THE SPEIGHTSTOWN MURAL ‘Bridge of Tides’ The largest ,trompe l’oeil mural in the region has just been completed in Speightstown by artist John Pugh of California, Annie Pugh and Don Small of Barbados. THE SPEIGHTSTOWN MURAL The largest ,trompe l’oeil mural in the region has just been completed in Speightstown by artist John Pugh of California, Annie Pugh and Don Small of Barbados. The mural, 80 feet long and 20 feet tall, now adorns the North wall of Jordan’s Supermarket warehouse, facing the now beautified beach and ‘boardwalk’ of Speightstown. It’s taken18 months of work, from February until April 15th. Trompe l’oeil is French for “deceive the eye” - a mural painting technique involving realistic imagery, creating a dramatic optical illusion of three dimensions. The Speightstown mural, ‘Bridge of Tides’, was the inspiration of Pierre Spennard, proprietor of Mangoes by the Sea Restaurant. Artist Don Small responded to a search for a local muralist, but saw the challenges of a mural on an unsuitable old wall, exposed to sun, sand and sea, and sure to fade rapidly. The famous trompe l’oeil murals of John Pugh have been widely seen on the web, and he was invited to Barbados, met with Don and Pierre, and began the plan, putting Speightstown ahead of other requests. John, Don and Pierre worked on the story line – from Amerindians to Independence and beyond, with Errol Barrow and the broken trident, within the dramatic Harrison’s Cave. Don made two visits to California to familiarise himself with John’s modern technology for massive outdoor murals. Work started in 2010, with Don working on the detail of the story line in California. The Speightstown Enhancement Fund Trust (SEFT) has been formed by Harold Hoyte, Peter Boos, Clyde Sobers and Henry Fraser, to promote and help finance this great work, and through the mural to stimulate and catalyse the revitalisation of historic Speightstown, Little Bristol and Spykes Bay – a neglected Treasure of Barbados. It is hoped that such a world class work of art on the beach front of the town will encourage owners, donors and friends of Speightstown, government and all stakeholders to partner in the rehabilitation of the town’s historic building and streetscape, and revitalise the town by linking all aspects of culture, the arts and entertainment to the rich history. Donors to the Fund can contact Peter Boos at pnboos@gmail.com

Thursday May 3rd , 4pm RSVP 773 5061 Nalis, 1st Floor,National Library Bldg, Hart & Abercromby St.,POS. TRINIDAD WHO IS ULRIC CROSS? He is probably the most decorated West Indian Squadron Leader of World War Two. Ulric was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for meritorious service by an Officer of the Armed Forces during wartime in actual combat. He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights. From a humble and orphaned Belmont childhood in colonial Trinidad, Ulric faced down barriers of colour, race and class to realize his extraordinary destiny. He first joined the Royal Air Force in 1941 as a navigator in Bomber Command. Ulric did eighty operational flights over Germany with twenty-one into Berlin; and was a member of the elite Pathfinders Force that perfected techniques for precision main force bombing. Ulric returned to civilian life where he went on to star in key postcolonial jurisprudence roles – as a trusted advisor to Nkrumah in Ghana, as Attorney General in Cameroon and as a close colleague of Julius Nyerere in Tanzania. He then came home to serve his country as judge, diplomat, and arbitrator. He returned to Britain as our High Commissioner in the 90’s. Now aged ninety-five, Ulric’s life is an inspiration to all, especially to our young people now and for generations to come. About HERO FILM Ltd. BRIDGETOWN FILM ACADEMY Our mission is to train and/or upgrade the skills of Caribbean people by conducting workshops in the areas of screenwriting, acting for film and television and digital filmmaking. In Barbados and the Caribbean our cultural landscape has evolved and we now sit at the threshold of what is for us a new frontier of cultural expression, the creation of a film industry. In addition, the world is now recognizing the Caribbean as a vast reservoir of untapped talent. In light of developments over the last six years, the Bridgetown Film Academy recognizes that we have reached critical mass in our effort to create a film industry in the Caribbean as a whole. We believe that it’s time for Caribbean people to tell their own stories to the world, and it is widely accepted that a viable film industry is the vehicle through which this shall be achieved. It is imperative therefore that we train persons and build capacity in the relevant areas to meet the demands of our fledgling film industry. In this regard, we believe that the Bridgetown Film Academy is the next logical step in the process. The Bridgetown Film Academy sees itself as fulfilling this role now and into the future. Our workshops are conducted by a team of dedicated individuals who share many years of combined knowledge and practical experience, and who are committed to the process sharing in order to help develop our film industry. www.bridgetownfilmacademy.com/

CHESTER B WILLIAMS ST LUCIA chesterbwilliams@gmail.com www.blurb.com/books/3181099

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF ST LUCIA by Chester Williams

On January 1st, 2008, I began a quest to record life on the island of St Lucia for the entire year. As the island was due to celebrate its 30th Anniversary of Independence in 2009, I decided to paint an overall picture, with 366 photographic images, of what it is like to live on the island on the eve of that occasion. My formula was simple: leave my home at dawn and return at midday. Have a quick lunch and head out until sunset. Return home, have dinner and then edit my images. This was done everyday for the entire 366 days.( 2008 was a leap year). Nothing was out of bounds and I deliberately sought to expose the viewer to areas of the island where the average person may not have had the opportunity to venture. What started out as a labor of love for me became an alarming and frightening reality as I bore witness to several instances of the mismanagement of the island's natural and cultural assets. Large tracts of land were cleared with no regard to the environment, beautiful old wooden homes were simply bulldozed and a large wetland area, where I photographed several species of birds, was simply drained to facilitate the building of a hotel, which to date has not even been started (see January 17th). In another equally heartbreaking case, several hundred acres of the last remaining habitat of the endemic White-breasted Thrasher, were cleared of vegetation in another hotel venture that failed. (see September 8th). In the space of only four years, the face of this island has changed forever. I hope the viewer of this book, especially the St Lucian viewer, will see and appreciate the beauty of the island and are inspired to do what they can to help preserve our heritage. This book of images portrays the island, frozen at a particular moment in its history. For this reason, I have chosen to record and share with the viewer the actual day and time that each photograph was taken. I have to say a special "thank you" to my wife Antonia, who was always there to encourage me during this unique and sometimes difficult undertaking. During the year, I suffered through a bought of dengue fever, several broken lenses, a broken camera and a car accident. I invite you to view, and hopefully enjoy, St Lucia through my eyes. My website - www.rosemaryparkinson.com in-shop is offering two e-books - Shake Dat Cocktail (a trip around the islands on cocktails) and Cocktails & Hors D' Oeuvres with myself and the late Grand Dame of Caribbean Cuisine Chef Norma Shirley. Both make great presents. Nyam Jamaica is on special for Christmas at US$140 including shipping. Those living in Barbados can order through me direct for BDS$150 signed. In Jamaica, of course, the book is carried by most bookstores. If you are visiting Devon House, Grogg Shop has them and whilst you are there, do enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner. Norma Shirley's spirit lives on. On NBC's morning show as one of the best picks for 2008/9 as Christmas presents, Nyam Jamaica makes an incredible corporate gift as it is not just a cookbook but a culinary tour that includes history, traditions and culture, meeting the people from parish to parish. It can be used from Primary to University level as an educational book and is in the hands of several international Chefs and, therefore, not only useful for a hotel or restaurant but also for culinary schools/colleges/universities. A collector's item, there are few left and there will be no more hard copies once the original stock of 6,000 copies is finished (see website for details and download for free the sponsorship proposal to learn more). NEWS RE BARBADOS BOOK: The Barbados book - Barbados Bu'n-Bu'n - goes to the designers on January 16th and this is good news especially for me as I believe it is time to put this book to rest from my computer and have the world see it. We are going for GOLD in Paris again. Endorsed by the late Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson; by Mia Mottley and the Inter-American Institute for CoOperation in Agriculture - Barbados - with comments from international Chef Art Smith (Oprah's personal Chef), writer/author Barbadian Elombe Mottley (Jamaica), playright/author/artist Trinidadian Lennox Raphael (Denmark) and others, this book is carded to hit the world like a good refreshing storm! On my website you will also find under Downloads, a synopsis for sponsorship for the Barbados book. If you would like to sponsor a double page for say a farmer, just have your corporate office's logo and details within or have an amazing food product or related product (restaurant, hotel) that you wish to go down in the annals of history, please contact me ASAP as I begin to close down this opportunity. This book is also a collector's item, will be going to be judged at the World Cookbook Awards in Paris, and I know will be one that will make Barbados proud and be placed into the annals of history. Naturally it is a big hard-cover visual book and costly to produce, so I am asking to dig deep into your budgets and let me know if there is a bit of sponsorship available. Bless. Do help by sending this information on to any of your contacts. I can be contacted at rosemaryparkinson2004@yahoo.com Have a wonderful, blessed and prosperous rest of the year, Love and light, Rosemary www.rosemary-parkinson.com
