Islander I am an islander....... Islanders come in two basic versions: Those who are rooted in place and tradition, staying firmly within the boundaries of family and shore. And, those, like me, who look beyond horizons, dreaming of infinite oceans and faraway lands, restless and rootless, at home everywhere and nowhere. I am an islander, I know islands...... Though I have settled on this island, this rock that is Barbados, for much longer than I have lived anywhere else and although I have planted trees and raised children here, although my work is here, I remain a dreamer, restless and rootless, at home everywhere and nowhere. I am an islander, I know islands and I know, that those of us who come from outside this island are like the waves crashing against its shores: we may make an immediate and forceful impact; repeated and tireless efforts might leave a slight indentation in the rock. But even the biggest wave will fall back spent into the sea, leaving a mere ripple in the sand; We crash against the rock, we wash over it, but we are not of the rock. I am an islander, I know islands...... And the horizon, where sky meets sea, is imprinted on my inner vision and ever present in my work. But it is that, which lies beyond the horizon, the unseen and the unknown, the mysteries of past, present and future which inform and inspire me. I am an islander........I know the sea.

Dust off that manuscript, pull together those loose sheets, pick up that exercise book with the scribbles and come through and share. We could all use a hand with perfecting our craft. The NIFCA Story The National Independence Festival of Creative Arts is the concept and dream of the late Arden Clarke and his wife Jeanette Layne - Clarke, who, with a group of committed cultural aficionados coordinated and staged the first festival in November of 1973. NIFCA has always sought to unearth the very best of Barbadian talent, encouraging persons from all walks of life to create and submit their entries in seven disciplines: dance, music, drama, literary arts, culinary arts, fine art and craft and photography. Entrants vie for gold, silver and bronze awards of achievement, top amateur awards named after local cultural icons and, in recent times, awards for entries by professionals, the highest being the Governor General's Award of Excellence. While NIFCA it is common to find a number of participants at NIFCA coming from Schools across the island, in recent times the festival has welcomed participation from an increasing number of, individuals, community groups and church organizations. In addition, it has also embraced the creative efforts of persons at our local penal institutions, recognizing the role of the arts in the rehabilitation process of those removed from civil society. The Festival provides the logical nurturing environment for performers, artists and artisans as they become poised to move onto greater stages of their craft. The creative outpourings of NIFCA flow naturally into our other national festivals and major events. One is almost guaranteed to see, hear and taste the skills of NIFCA graduates in the immediate years following their successful conquest of the NIFCA stage. In fact, many return year after year to show off their improved techniques and compete against the ultimate standard: excellence! The tradition continues

Inspiration My intention is to show the jeweler’s art in true perspective, where the design and craftsmanship are to be value above material worth of the metal; where the real beauty lies in an aesthetic sensitivity that is inherent in structures and materials chosen without real regard for monetary value. For me, it is an attempt to ensure their daring, non-conventional and “spiritual” character! Brass and Copper are generic materials (base metals), and I have used design techniques to enhance the organic process of patina. As this process evolves, the object becomes more beautiful, naturally…

Starring: Alwin Bully, Nigel Scotland, Luther Bourne, Marcia Burrowes, Cynthia Wilson, Suzette Mayobre, Ronald L. Connor Screenplay by: Russell Watson Directed by: Russell Watson Produced by: Lisa Harewood Archie Redman is a middle aged man chasing a fading dream. Obsessed with holding on to his failing hotel, he has sacrificed everything - his marriage lies broken, his son estranged and the bank is poised to foreclose. Ben, his bitter father, ignores his pleas for help, unable to forgive an act of betrayal committed twenty years ago over a parcel of hard-earned land. Thousands of miles away, Archie's son Jay struggles with mounting challenges of his own. He is stuck in immigration limbo, jobless in a cold and unforgiving city and involved in a demanding relationship. Just as an unwelcome piece of news further complicates Jay's situation, he is presented with an opportunity to resolve his problems, but to take it he must choose between securing his own future and repeating the sins of the past. CARIBBEAN FILM MAKERS Caribbean filmmakers descended on Toronto in numbers for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held at various venues around Toronto from September 9th to 19th. These filmmakers, some new to the craft and others experienced hands, were assembled by the energetic filmmaker and producer Frances-Anne Solomon and her colleagues from Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution Inc., a newly-formed distribution company whose mission is to bring Caribbean films to the world. Some of the filmmakers present included Mary Wells of Jamaica, Tony Hall of Trinidad and Tobago, Sharon Lewis of Toronto, and Allison Saunders of Barbados. In all 25 filmmakers from across the region participated in a 3-day Incubator Workshop held at the University of Toronto to develop and hone their marketing and presentation skills. The workshop was facilitated by Michelle Materre of New York and Tanya Mudaly of the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation. They went on to participate in several TIFF events including the ReelWorld Indie Networking Event hosted by Tonya Lee Williams. Ms Solomon expressed her delight at the strong participation of Caribbean filmmakers at TIFF thanks to sponsorship from UNIDO, Caribbean Export, Canada Council for the Arts, Invest Barbados, Caribbean Airlines and the Commonwealth Foundation. She said “It was exciting to organize this event and very gratifying to see Caribbean and Diapora filmmakers network with each other, make valuable contacts in the world of film and sharpen their pitching skills. I feel that Caribbean film is about to take off and Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution will be the spearhead of the effort to bring Caribbean stories to global audiences.” She went on to state “We will be hosting the Second Caribbean Tales Film Festival and Symposium in Barbados in February 2011 and we will be back in Toronto for TIFF in September 2011 with an even larger contingent of Caribbean talent.”

SUMI-E CLASSES WITH LEANDRO SOTO IN CLOUD’S NEST ART “Hello Art Lovers! People are asking me about when I will open a course in Sumi-e art in my studio. Mondays from 7:00-9:00PM at Clouds Nest Art Studio, St.George, Gun Hill. Phone 429 0496. If you decided to take a course is it normally 10 classes minimum in order to have good results. Regarding schedule, if you miss one week or more because traveling ( and we all travel) I will keep flexible. I can accommodate some changes if is it necessary in order to reschedule the missing class. I need to know in advance if you are coming to a class. Each class is $50.00 per participant ( Barbadian Dollars). You can pay this amount in front of each class, or in advance, it is up to you. If there is a couple that come together always, I can take $80.00 for both. Please note that I do the teaching with a lot of respect for this art as an spiritual practice: I will need your serious commitment in terms of practicing at home by yourself and doing home works. I will offer tea (and a good back ground music!) in each gathering as well as art supplies for the first classes, but you will need to buy your brushes, inks and papers, as long as you develop your abilities in the practice of this ancient art form that will be teach in a contemporary way. Please let me know if you are interested. Call me at 429 0496 Best Regard to all,”

2010 brings a new adventure for this effervescent artist; Vanita is launching a local product line which will feature her images on stationary, calendars, pens, tshirts, and towels among other things as well as increasing her line of metal work and creating her very first coffee table book, showcasing her work throughout the years. The line will be called 'Very Vanita' and will be available by summer 2010. The product line will give Vanita an opportunity to re-produce her most popular images in various media whilst freeing her up to take her painting in a new direction, address new subject matter and continue her lifelong experimentation with colour. www.onthewallartgallery.com

Our publisher - Toute Bagai Publishing (TBP). TBP is the first publishing house in the Caribbean to produce internationally distributed magazines showcasing Caribbean living. TBP was formed in 1999 with signature magazine MACO Caribbean Living. The magazine was the first of its kind in concept, quality, and style, and is the first Caribbean-based magazine to be promoted by the international bookstore chain Barnes and Noble (also owner of the B. Dalton franchise). TBP went on to produce three new publications all in the space of one year in 2005; MACO Destinations, MACO Design Sourcebook, and MACO Caribbean Homes, a collector's edition of the magazine's best. The company also produced numerous guest publications for other companies with resounding success. Awards TBP and Colour Innovations were highly noted at the 2004 Premier Print Awards for MACO Magazine Volume 6, Issue 1, and received the Gold and Silver awards at the 31 st Annual International Gallery of Superb Printing Awards in 2005 for MACO Destinations, Volume 1 Issue 1, and MACO Magazine Volume 6 Issue 3, respectively. TBP has garnered worldwide renown for its low-key, yet distinctive style, attention to detail, and passion for the craft. After only nine years, the company has quickly become the symbol of Caribbean chic, and has committed itself through various sponsorships and partnerships with some of the Caribbean 's most influential companies such as Remy Martin, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Camper and Nicholsons.
